I once had a dream. In this dream, I was in a great, dark forest and all I had with me was a single lantern that barely illuminated my face, let alone the path before me. I was lost, I was alone and I was scared. I remember that sensation vividly, it was so strong - a cold, sick feeling that clutched at my heart. Behind me, even though I could not see him, I could feel the presence of Coll.

I considered stopping. Maybe if I had, I could have held onto him - maybe we could have been together? Maybe I could have said instead of just trying to show him with clumsy, inexpert attempts, that I loved him. We would have travelled the Sword Coast together, discovered a remedy for the disfavour of a cynical God that graced him, our steps taken us anywhere at all...  Would we have passed through the stern Baldur's Gate, down to the riches and secrets laden Amn? Or perhaps across the Sea of Fallen Stars where you reached to try and grab them for me, for a necklace on our way to Thay? Could I have taken you home, to the outskirts of the Cormanthor Forest where Harrowdale sleeps on the snakes of water seeping inland and you met my father...?

Would you have asked him...? The light in the lantern I hold shines brightly in my eyes as I didn't stop. I just kept walking. I always did that - I always saw the road ahead. And because of that, I lost you, Coll. I lost so much of myself... -------------------------- "Ehl. Ehl. ... Ehl..." Tired and unwilling to respond to the musical voice calling her name out insistently, but grateful that her friend was keeping her hands to herself rather than shaking her to a more alert state. What she did manage to gather was that she was on the floor of a rocky area, the uneven grounds of dirt pressing into her cheek and with a drawn out sigh, the half-elf snapped a little, "I'm up, shut up, you sound ridiculous." "Where are we...?"

"Rhetorical?"

"Mmm? Oh yes... unless you actually know what happened or where we are?"

What had happened? Ehlizabet sat up, wiping her cheek off slowly - her already debateably useful adventuring leathers that had been held together by self-administered stitching, belts, bandages and a little bit of luck were in an even worse state. She noted that half of her left leg of britches was missing, as well as the soles of both boots and if the chill running up her back was any indication, the rough stitching there had also ripped open.

Her knapsack was open and the contents scattered over the immediate vicinity, mixed in with the splinters of Krys' lute and lap harp. Her bow it seemed, had only been battered rather than broken, but the bowstring was in two pieces. She couldn't see her quiver, it was anyone's guess where it had gone, along with her rapier. Potions were smashed, blanket-rolls left open and her only other change of clothes sitting in a puddle of mud.

Her lime green eyes looked around hurriedly, seeing the dregs of a closing portal that seemed to be the only colour in this place. It was a jagged edged, red, open maw of energy that rotated slowly but unevenly.

"A portal?" She said aloud, "Did we walk through it?"

"No, we got trapped in a tapestry." Krys, who looked near pristine in comparison, tilted her golden haired head and her blue eyes were focused on the portal. "Maybe it was some kind of enchantment, a plane shift?"

"Or a Banishment." Ehl got up and hurried to the portal, "I can see... hang on," she reached in, picking up the book and just as she managed to snatch it through to her, the portal seemed to screech with a whine of magic and closed again further, so all that was left was about the size of a torso of a slender elf. "...I'm guessing there's no going back through this way."

"Ehl," Krys said slowly. "Look behind us."

She did, only turning her head a little to glance back. There were atop a cliff perch, before them in a spread out, fairly flat countryside, was a vast expanse of land. But for all the mountains, forest, poking promises of rooftops... all Ehlizabet's eyes registered immediately was the dense, dark, Mist.

"It's worse... than Ravenloft..." Krys whispered. "Oh, Gods protect us, we... we're going to die here... Ehl..."

The Mists, as all concealing as they were in the mysterious demiplane Ravenloft, they were magnified tenfold here - as if all the misery and despair in the world had been condensed and dumped across this strange landscape. Wordlessly, Ehl looked at the book in her hands - the red leather binding with the handprint on the front of it and the runic eye scriven into the palm of the burned hand shape. At least the Guide was in her hands still.

As the sobs of the broken bard behind her shivered through the dead air, the rogueish half elf felt her gaze being drawn up to the slowly closing portal that was to trap them here in this hellscape.

She closed her eyes, shutting out the ghost of Coll - trapped in Ravenloft in incorporeal form, all he could do was stare at her imploringly, lovingly and sadly from the other side. When Ehl opened her eyes, the last thing she saw before the magic dissipated, was her lost love's smile - always one last smile, just for her. "Nah," she said quietly, running fingertips over the book cover. "If we get lucky, just dying a normal death... that'd be a true mercy. Come on, stop snivelling, might as well get our things together and get looking. If you didn't forget, we weren't the only ones trapped in a cross-stitch pattern. Looking for them will give us something to do to pass the time until whatever weird creature wants a snack before dinner finds us..." ----------- ...and now I have lost Coll.

So I keep walking, in the dark, endless forest as the lantern flickers, flickers, and goes out.

Dave Filoni - The showrunner for The Clone Wars, Rebels, Resistance, and now The Mandalorian, that man is an amazing storyteller. Like, he may feel he learned from George Lucas, but I feel that he’s swiftly surpassing his master in skill. His processes are amazing, and every time he does an extended interview, I learn more and more about his methods.

Doug Chiang - The head of the Lucasarts artistic department, in a single, condensed panel, I learned more about design than I ever did when I tried going to college. While he learned from Ralph McQuarrie primarily, as well as George Lucas, the way he conveys that knowledge is really good. He essentially took over for McQuarrie and has done a fantastic job ever since.

Neil Gaiman ( @neil-gaiman ) - To me, Neil and Terry Pratchett are the best writers of our time, and y’ all can fight me over that. I grew up on The Sandman comics because the story behind the series is one of the best I’ve ever read. Consistently, Gaiman delivers incredibly well written, inventive stories that have characters with great depth. I only wish I could write as well as he does.

A commencement speech he did in 2012 has frequently helped me get through some pretty tough times. “Make Good Art” is by far the most fantastic, uplifting advice that has ever been given.

Someday, I’ll have the money to take his Master Class, because what’s better than being taught about writing by God himself?

In the XIV Community

Aegir ( @aegir-ffxiv ) - I sometimes wonder if he’s an android like Seth Green is, because it never seems like he bothers to sleep, and is always working hard on bringing interesting projects to fruition. He’s got a lot of creativity and talent with both storytelling and art.

While he has made some missteps in his attempts to bring projects to fruition, to make them sustainable, he tries to own up to those mistakes, and learn from them. I believe people should be forgiven for mistakes, so long as they learn from them, and grow from them, and that’s what I’ve seen from Aegir.

Also, the man has a pretty huge heart. I haven’t been able to RP with him since All Saints’ Wake, but he’s checked in on me frequently anyway - especially in the past month. It was so touching.

Bhryn ( @ferai-caolann ) - Bhryn’s art is just amazing and inspiring, and I absolutely love everything I see, and Bhryn’s one of my top favourite artists. They keep creating, whenever they can, despite problems with some pretty serious chronic medical issues. And it helps to see someone doing that.

I still have this rose item in XIV that Bhryn gave me aaaaages ago. It’s survived every single inventory purge I’ve ever done. Because it just meant that much to me.

Seda ( @sedatayuun ) - Seda has amazing artwork as well, though my favourite piece he’s done wasn’t even FF related - it was practice for drawing eyes. It’s just a single, tear-filled eye, and it was just so well done and so pretty, it’s still just my favourite piece. I was sad when I lost everything on my hard drives, because I lost that image, and a silly comic Seda made about my Miqo boy.

As well as being a great artist, Seda’s just plain fun. His humour is amazing, and it always brightens my day. Despite all the rough times he’s had, he still has that humour, and that in itself is amazing.

You wonderful sweetheart. When I was in one of the darkest moments of my life, you were there, with Vell, supporting me when you yourself were in as equally bad a spot. A different kind of callout post...

With the holidays here and the new year rapidly approaching, I feel the need to thank some of the wonderful people in the community who have been an important part of my year. It’s a long list and I’ll put it beneath the cut, but even if your name isn’t here, I just want you to know that just being a part of the Balmung community has made you a part of my life and I appreciate you and everything we’ve all built here together!

I of course have to start this list with my RP partner and best friend, @rhisdonffxiv. Through ups and downs, he has always stood by me and supported me. Over the past year, we have built a beautiful story with our adorable nerds and I am forever inspired by them. So, thank you, Rhis, for being exactly who I needed. I hope that there are many more years in store for us.

Next are @shroudwayman and @the-false-ser-toes, two of the biggest nerds I know and really great friends. I met Renaux not long after joining Balmung -- they are actually the first name on my friends list in game! -- and through them Certo. Two years later, those Duskies are dear friends and the god-uncles to a certain toddler. So, thank you both for everything. I hope for many more years of friendship!

Then there’s the every wonderful, @nightmaze. We first met when I ordered my first gif commission and as time has passed we have grown to be good friends. She is kind, generous, and understanding -- one of the best people I’ve had the joy of knowing. Thank you, Ilwe. I cherish our friendship and hope we will get to know each other even better in the coming year.

I met @bhryn-illustrations at one of her Hide-and-Seek events. I was too nervous to approach her and Seda on the first day (I really am terribly shy), but she snagged me the next day and made me sit with them for a while. From that moment on, I knew that I didn’t have to be afraid to talk to her and a friendship grew between us. Thank you, Ferbutt. Your friendship has meant a lot to me and I hope it will only continue to grow.

Recently, I have been getting to know a new circle of nerds, who have thoroughly helped to ruin my sleep schedule -- @miqodi, @setheron, @gatheredfates, @loosenedchains. I can’t even begin to say what it has meant to me that you all so easily accepted me into your group and I truly feel like I belong with you. Thank you for being so wonderful. I hope this is only just the beginning!

I joined tumblr just a few days after I first moved Syerra to Balmung. It was my first attempt at sharing a character’s story so publicly and I honestly didn’t expect that anyone would ever want to follow me. But @manawalls proved me wrong. She is my first mutual and has supported Syerra’s story without pause for the past two years. Thank you, L’luana. Your support for me and my little blog has meant more than I could ever say. You encourage me and I am so grateful for you.

On the list of amazing tumblr friends and supporters, I need to thank @aethersent, @ffxivtribehydrae, @neoma-eltanin, @ishgardianskypirate, and so many others who have sent in asks, liked and reblogged, and even said hello in game!
