THE MORGAN BLACK HOURS
The Black Hours is an illuminated book of hours completed in Bruges between 1460 and 1475. It consists of 121 pages (leaves), with Latin text written in Gothic minuscule script. The words are arranged in rows of fourteen lines and follow the Roman version of the texts. The lettering is inscribed in silver and gold and placed within borders ornamented with flowers, foliage and grotesques, on pages dyed a deep blueish black. It contains fourteen full-page miniatures and opens with the months of the liturgical calendar followed by the Hours of the Virgin, and ends with the Office of the Dead.
The anonymous painter of the Black Hours is an artist whose style depended mainly upon that of Willem Vrelant, one of the dominant illuminators working in Bruges from the late 1450s until his death in 1481. As in the work of Vrelant, figures in angular drapery move somewhat stiffly in shallowly defined spaces. The men's flat faces are dominated by large noses.
Only seven copies exist. The one shown is held by the Morgan Library. [View large]

So, the little black book Claudia used to record Lestat's last words, it doesn't look like one of her regular everyday diaries to me. Do you think she used it for special occasions only, like to record her most important kills? What do you think was on the missing pages? A brief account of the murder scene itself, or something else? I wonder why it was cut out...
I think the little black book is a hint at her state of mind, she is a woman then, decidedly so, even if the hormonal upheaval will have her experiencing her emotions very strongly, and makes her see the world in stark contrast.
But I think the black diary was probably the one "found in Paris". It could also be reserved for special occasions, special entries, but for me the contrast of progression - the little bow on the first, the flowers, then simple red, then... black - speaks more of an increasing seriousness, a maturity of mind.
I think... that the diary is the one with the twist.
The diary in Merrick also has pages torn out of it, removed, and I think the importance of the scenes that were removed by "whoever" (Louis and Armand respectively, likely) can not be underestimated.
I think the removed pages will contain some harsh truths.
Some truths that Louis does not wish to face too directly, or truths Armand does not wish to face him. "I protect Louis from himself, always have." "Louis can sometimes act out."
We know the killing scene did not go as described, and we know it will be revisited. Daniel already hints at Claudia hating Louis' guts there, at least for a while (and then pages are cut out).
In Merrick, it becomes clear that Claudia used Louis to get rid of Lestat, because she knew Lestat would not hurt Louis, and she found Louis more malleable. In the book it hurts him so badly he tries to commit suicide after (there's a bit more to it).
I think the missing pages - torn out or cut - will contain truths. There was no reason for her to lie then (arguably, there is reason for her to not write everything into her earlier diaries, because she knew they might read them!!) - and so whatever was removed must have impact.
Impact neither Louis or Armand want Daniel to leverage on them.
Which will fail, of course :)
Daniel has only started tearing the narrative apart, he is a Pulitzer price winner, he will come for the truth now, whether Louis and Armand are ready or not :)))
Arguably, that is at least part of the reason why Louis invited him, too (I think the other is that Louis wants to reconcile Armand and Daniel) - because I don't think Louis is consciously lying about some things. But he may... misremember. Or he was influenced to.
Armand is a big mind and spell gift user. He canonically influences Louis to do certain things. I don't think it's a stretch to say that he takes "good care" of Louis - in his own, inimitable way^^.
Btw, I do think Armand means well - by then. But it's... Armand. :))
