Work in Progress: Blanchitsu-Sister of Silence
Some Warhammer-nostalgia:
John Blanche is one of the 2D and miniature artists who has had the most lasting impact on the Warhammer aesthetic. Everyone has seen at least one of his paintings (and if not: he's the creator of the famous SoB hairstyle!) and what we now take for granted in fandom as "Grimdark" was largely built by him (whether as artist or art director).
He's been on my radar since the late nineties - his influence on comic artists like Jamie Hewlitt was a big thing for teenage-me.
Over at Mastodon, there are regular miniature painting challenges called #FediPaint in a loose, more or less monthly rhythm. And this time the theme is "Blanchitsu" - in the style of John Blanche (yes, that's a fixed term).
I'm not good enough to participate with my miniatures yet (although the Beastmen would lend themselves very well to this), so I've decided to contribute a tribute to Blanche's 2D work.
So here's a Sister of Silence - or at least the first sketch. It's my style, of course, but I'm trying to incorporate as many classic Blanchitsu elements as possible. And I'm curious to see if I can at least hint at Blanche's extremely iconic colouring!
It's going to be an exciting work.

Inspired by a John Blanche piece that I can't find anywhere. :(
She will eventually go into a vignette once I think of a fitting background.

The ping ponging between projects continues, I got some paint on the Fodder I've been putting together using the official Turnip28 torsos that dropped a while back, mixed mainly with the free medieval infantry kits made by Ilhadiel and some other free bits from online

Sculpted by Knucklebones Miniatures.
Painted by me.
For use in Inquisitor, Necromunda, Stargrave, Dark Heresy, etc.
Many questions surround the ghostly warriors that stand vigil over the nuclear dunes.
How do they survive the radiation? Who is the Off Worlder leading them? Are they allies of the Red Sorcerer? Why are they gathering in numbers never seen before?
Most folk simply turn away and lock their doors. What they dont know can't hurt them, right?

Finished painting my spooky Halloween monster to use in necromunda/ killteam/ Inq 28 settings.
The general idea behind this creature is that some unfortunate soul was implanted with technology that would activate and turn them into a killing machine. The tech grew and self replicated over time until it eventually burst forth from its host. Certain vestigal features of the body's former inhabitant are still visible on the new abomination.
I don't paint in this style enough. I tend to like brighter colors in my miniatures and think that this hit a good balance between grimdark/blanchitsu and still including some spots of color. For example the ooze on the base or the nixie tubes protruding from the creature's back.
I also experimented with Dirty Down Rust on the base here which I'm a huge fan of now.

Beastmen painted in the style of John Blanche. Figures by Crooked Dice.
I'm not too familiar with his work since the Warhammer universe doesn't appeal to me (too grimy and extreme), so this is my take on at least the Blanche palette. What's more naturally brown and dusty without necessarily being grimy than desert wasteland? (Surfaces on metal miniatures usually have some natural pitting and roughness vs perfectly smooth plastic, which is a quality that I'm also taking advantage of here.)
It was a lot quicker to paint these than I expected. Speedpaint and washes are your friends here.
This was for a painting challenge over on Mastodon. I also have some human figures I could probably do up later to match.
(I spent a while photoshopping out the background. Maybe it's a bit extra.)

When a barrel wizard's spell goes wrong, it's possible for them to be trangsmogrified, along with anyone near by. This fellow was astride his horse, and now wanders eternally - seeking blood.
An old project I'm particularly happy with. I pretend it's for Frostgrave (or Mordheim?), but I've no clue what I'd use it for!

Very quick Blanchitsu/AoS28 nmm style painting for a sigmarite. Very happy with it. 90% of the paintjob is highlighting though.
