the tragic thing about john doe is that he was doomed from the start.

he was likely born in a low- or mid-tier district: new bostin high's old king, zirian, was the only one john had trouble beating, before he figured out how to amplify abilities, and at the time he beat zirian, zirian was a 3.7. zirian, pre-john, was considered incredibly powerful, nigh unbeatable. in new bostin, someone who was barely an elite was considered incredibly powerful.

god-tiers are already incredibly rare. they're even more rare than high-tiers, and whenever remi, blyke, and isen visit a low-tier district as vigilantes, everyone regards them almost as royalty - unbelievably powerful, unreachable, divinity on earth. they are with dozens, and they’re terrified of a single, non-hostile girl. also, some of the background characters say: “what’s a high-tier doing in branish?” “yeah, they would never come to a place like this.” most low-tiers likely have never even seen a high-tier in the flesh, let alone a god-tier.

add to that that wellston is supposed to be the most powerful school in the province, at least, and before john, there were only two god-tiers in attendance: an 8.0 and a 6.3. and before arlo became king, rei was, and rei was a 5.8. the king of the strongest school in the province was a 5.8.

jane doe was raised in a god-tier family. she knows, presumably, what it means to be a god-tier, when everyone around you is weaker than you, and not by a little bit. but jane has been gone since john was a toddler - and the only person left to raise him was his father. his cripple father, who has lived his whole life being spat on, disregarded, considered less than.

and then you have john. john first discovered his ability in his last year of middle school. unordinary doesn't give us an exact timeframe, but it is mentioned that he first uses his ability towards the end of the school year. if we assume that the education system in unordinary is comparable to the us education system, then that makes john about fourteen years old. it is never mentioned when most kids discover their abilities, but sera mentioned that she got martial arts lessons for a few years when she was a young child, but stopped when her ability came in. assuming sera's development is normal and abilities usually come in at the same age regardless of level, that would place the average age well before ten. another thing: everyone around john seemed to assume he would never get an ability. they considered him a cripple. which either means that late-bloomers are so incredibly rare that it isn't even considered a possibility, or john was so far past the age of ability manifestation that no one thought it was possible.

of course, his dad was also a cripple, and since genetics are a thing in uno, it would make sense for people to assume john would be a cripple even before he passed the manifestation age. (and treat him accordingly)

john got expelled in his second year in high school. when, exactly, doesn't really matter. once again assuming that the uno education system works like the us education system, that would place john at 15-16 years old.

so you have this kid, sixteen years old, who's had his ability for about two years. he spent most of his life being considered the lowest of the low - spat on, disregarded, less than. his dad, his only parental figure, has had those exact same experiences, and the only thing he can tell his child is that that is just the way the world works. it's unfair, but that's life.

but then he gets an ability. and within two years, he is almost twice as strong as the second strongest kid around. none of the adults have ever met someone as strong as him. him, the former cripple, with the cripple father. former lowest of the low, now a god amongst men. the kids, though, his classmates, his peers, they don't really understand his power. how much stronger he is than them. to tell the truth, he doesn't either, not fully. he's never met someone as strong as he is, at sixteen. but his classmates, they just remember when they used to walk all over him. when they would beat him bloody and then complain about getting his disgusting cripple blood on their shoes. and now he dares to stand above them?

they don't like him. of course they don't. cripples aren't able to become gods. they can't comprehend that john did.

and john, obviously, lashes out at his former bullies. he finally has a chance to pay them back, for all the cuts, bruises, broken bones he'd received from them over the years. he's stronger than them, and it's his turn to make them hurt. he goes farther than they did - their abilities are useless against the might of his power - but he doesn't really care. (they never held back, so he doesn't either, and the damage he does is much, much worse. the adults are mad, and he doesn't get why. he's only doing what everyone else does.)

the adults have no idea how to handle him. he's out of control. but they've never seen an ability this powerful before, except on tv, or in stories. high-rankers are supposed to keep order. (but no one listens to john. why would they? he's just a cripple, the lowest of the low, who managed to cheat the system.) his dad, kind-hearted william doe the cripple, has no idea how to help him. he can't relate to his problems at all. (is there even a problem? who wouldn't want to be powerful? for william, for adrian, for claire, it'd be a dream come true. it used to be, for john.) there is no one around who even vaguely knows what it's like to be a god-tier, or even a high-tier, or even just a high-ranker in general, except for zirian, who's barely a high-ranker at all, and who hates john for dethroning him. there is no one who understands him.

so then you have john. sixteen years old. god-tier. angry at the world, and the world is angry at him. how was he ever supposed to win?

(Hi guys, my first post like this exploded! Thanks for all the support!)

John:

-He would freeze up, reminiscing what had happened to other vigilantes and wishing that you would change your mind

-He would try to tel you to reconsider but you stood firm.

-You two would argue about it ending up in him leaving to cool off and the two of you reconnecting later

-He says it’s ok but begs you to be careful, telling you that he’s going to train you in hand-to-hand combat first

-You tell him you will be and the two of you end up playing video games the rest of the day

Sera:

-would be open to it

-tells you not to be a dumbass and get yourself banged up or killed

-helps you make your costume

-teaches you pointers she learned from John about how to beat ass

Remi:

-When you say you want to be a vigilante shes not surprised.

-she tells you she’s also one and that so are Blyke and Isen.

-she helps you with your costume, your fighting style (not your vigilante name tho)

-you end up going on a patrol with her, Iswn and Blyke to see how it’s done

(cue epic fight scene)

Blyke:

-he’s surprised that you want to become one but ends up helping you train first

-you have your costume put together but he helps u come up with a name that you won’t have to come up with on the spot

-he takes you on patrol with him and it goes smooth-ish (save for beating up a few assholes)

Isen:

-bro is shooketh

-he did not originally want anyone else getting involved but like, now you are

-he help you come up with a name and a costume, keeping an eye out for you

-half tries to teach you how to fight, stating that Remi and Blyke, who are also vigilantes would help you with that part

-get you a mask that covers your whole face

-he tries to talk you out of it at first but you tell him that you’re becoming one and he accepts it eventually with a long sigh

Arlo:

-bro is shook

-he doesn’t want you to get caught by the government too, not wishing to lose ALL of his friends

-he’s tired asf

-he heavily tries to convince you out of it but you tell him that this decision is final

-he tel you he doesn’t want you getting caught or being seen like that because that’ll put a target on your back

-you reassure him but he’s still a skeptic

-he says a reluctant “fine” and lets you start to become one

-checks on you frequently and gets Elaine to heal you if shit hits the fan(oh it will)

Arlo didn't know how he ended up in the cafe with y/n. Like, this was his first ever date. But he kept his cool while sipping on his coffee and listening to every word y/n says while making comments from time to time.

On the other hand, y/n was smoothing away chittering and chattering, excited the whole time.

Of course since y/n was pretty, many people were staring at them and Arlo shot all of them dirty looks.

"HEYYY ARLOOOO ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION????"

"Yes, yes I am paying attention you were saying that the project was harder than expected right? But luckily Seraphina was your partner" Arlo chuckled playfully.

"HEY! STOP YELLING SO LOUDLY" A familiar voice was heard.

Y/n turned around and saw Blyke, Isen and Remi sitting together.

"Ohhhh so you were the people talking about being souperheros and stuff. I wish ya'll luck~ I'm interested but don't wanna cause trouble. Maybeeee I can be your sidekick, well mainly Remi cause we are besties~ okok I'm joking, I'm joking" Y/n said as fast as they can.

"Arlo? I can barely understand this person, how can you even listen to them talk for an hour straight and understand EVERY SINGLE LETTER. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!" Isen reasoned.

So far, Blyke’s reign as king has certainly been weird because. He just doesn’t have the same authority. He’s in an awkward position where most of the main cast is actually more powerful than him, so unlike John and arlo, he can’t just intimidate people into listening to him.

But if we’ve learned anything from unordinary, it’s that power isn’t everything. It could turn out to be a really interesting commentary on what actually makes people good leaders— respect rather than the fear previous kings used. It’d be fun to see arlo and John defer to blyke, not because he’s powerful but because he’s just. Better suited for the role of King. However, that hasn’t really happened so far? Information is constantly being withheld from Blyke, so he’s rarely the one making impactful choices.

I mean, his reign is probably far from over so!! I’m holding out for more interesting things

John is a Very flawed guy..he has a lot of trauma to deal with and anger issues as well as PTSD. He hurt (like. Physically..) everyone around him and tried his best to push everyone away. He caused so much hurt and was genuinely SCARY for a while...but Seraphina stayed..she probably shouldn't have stayed with how he treated her and how he was acting but she Did. She stayed and got John the push he needed to become a better person. She put herself on the line, basically signed her life away to this corrupt organisation just to help him out. She's been nothing but loyal and understanding towards him. Even when her life was basically being threatened she wanted to keep that to herself so John could focus on recovering for once. Just them.....ughhhghh❤️

Blyke & Isen:

If you're looking for one, find the other, he's always close by. They've done everything together, from getting into fights to destroying government property and witnessing gruesome alleyway murders. They are also a pair of goofs.

Unordinary last name hcs

90% of these are me stealing headcanons from different people Something i always wonder about: do children typically inherit their last names from their mother or father? i personally don’t think john counts as an example because he didn't grow up with his mother and we don’t even know if william and jane were married. (+ i don't think we hear him be referred to with william’s last name) i believe that last names are based off of a family’s abilities? like, families with defensive abilities will have a last name relating to defensive stuff or whatever. anyways. i have specific nitpicks with last names, the letters they start with, and the way they roll off the tongue.

skipping JOHN for this post since DOE fits him well enough already. for ISEN, i’d have him have his last name be JAEGER. its a German surname that means ‘hunter’ and i think it just rolls off the tongue well too. i saw a couple people use it and i was like !! wow. that fits really well.  ARLO would probably be a French last name or something vaguely defense-related. imo names starting with A go pretty well with B last names, so, ARLO BASTION (a kind of fortification tower) or ARLO BEAUFORT (beautiful fortress).

BLYKE, i think would have a Chinese/Korean last name (personal hc that he’s Asian lmao). a few surnames i think that sound nice / sort-of fit him are: YUN  (korean - meaning governor), ZHU (chinese, meaning crimson) and lastly, LIANG (meaning a bridge or a beam). i tried to do some vague symbolism & references ot his ability on the last two !! was quite indecisive with blyke gfghj

SERAPHINA is the character i had the most trouble trying to find a suitable last name for, like, its just so hard. kept trying to find last names relating to ‘time’ that sounded right with her first name and it was atrociously difficult. some other hcs of other people were “levin” and another, “albrecht” that fits better but they didn’t ring right w me. i eventually ended up with KAIROS (meaning the exactly right time to do/say a certain thing in ancient Greek), and/or YULE (celebration of the winter solstice, doesn’t necessarily fit with the “time” theme but i thought it sounded nice) REMI i think would have a Japanese last name, since rei and remi are both Japanese names (rei meaning departed soul and remi meaning heavens, sky) A few fitting surnames i found are: AMETSUCHI (meaning heaven & earth) or TENKUBASHI (meaning heaven sky bridge). yep, lots of symbolism on the lightning ability.  tag w your uno last name hcs . i am hungry ;

Holy motherfucking shit I fucking knew William was gonna die. One because it's the only way to push John to take action by his own will rather than reacting because that's what he thinks is safe for him to do and two because.. well actually just one but one is one to fucking one hundred because oh my fucking god is John gonna lose his absolute shit

But, but I think he's not gonna go all wild ham on people this time. No I think he's for sure learnt his lesson and is gonna just smash shit to pieces with a plan this time. He's got a good fucking network to support him which appeared after his worst mental break down ever, his uncle is gonna get involved and finally meet John and he'll at least not be asshole enough to throw him away because John's powerful but he might disregard him cause he's a child and might assume John's takes after William if he does no research... honestly the guy doesn't fill me with a lot of faith and I t think he's going to be a bad influence on John or at least get him in some deep, deep shit it'll take Arlo to get him out of if he's not been 'reeducated' by his aunt which is beginning to look like a strong possibility

also Arlo needs a fucking nap. Arlo almost deserves a fucking nap too. Poor little idiot doesn't realise he's being taken for a ride by his aunt which I feel like he might have if he didn't look two minutes from keeling over.

John was doing so fucking well too. ugh this is gonna be like five giant steps backward if he were fifty feet tall and two steps behind him was a bottomless ravine. Please let my optimistic guess be right in that he stays with his people and they stay with him, he fucking needs them in two chapters more than ever (cause I don't think they'll reveal it to John in the next one, drag out the suspension)

Fucking loved Arlo and John's interactions in the last few chapters, fav ship for sure out the series but John's starting to get regular friendly with him again and that's so cute and fluffy I can't even handle it. There's Arlo angsting his way down the hall noticing everyone else bitching about him and then John appears out of nowhere all happy to see him and concerned of this wellbeing.

Kind of says something about his character though too, that he notices the mob instead of the individual with power.

but also I fucking knew everything was about to go to shit when they got a seemingly big win. With William gone it's the end of the line for John staying as out of things as he can and well, despite his methods he does get shit done rather efficiently. All we can hope is that Arlo comes to his senses and joins John before John has to break him out of reeducation prison which would be an amazing arc for John finally overcoming his trauma and ideally murdering Keon

probably though Sera will get caught and sent to reeducation, Arlo will lose faith in his family and the system, confess to John who has likely just heard about the murder of this father or is just about to hear about it and John will spiral wildly out of control and take everyone and everything down with him as he does and somehow it will work itself out but with people actively trying to help him

side note, I did also love John's interaction with Remi, Blyke and Isen. Isen's face when John tells them his dad wrote UnOrdinary is like 'everything I learn about you makes it worse please stop I'll go to jail for knowing anything more'

Okay you made a post about wanting webtoon asks a little while ago, if you’re still interested—UnOrdinary. What do you think of the current plot (wherever you’re at in the comic), who’s your favorite and least favorite character, and what’s your most controversial opinion? :D if you please anyway, feel free to delete this if it’s a bother!

I’ll start—for me, I like the current plot but miss some of the conflict from the joker arc + aftermath, it seems like the characters just have to mostly get along now for the larger plot. Super pumped about all the Jane stuff though. I’m basic so my faves are Sera and John and my least favorite are Arlo and Blyke. My controversial opinion is that Blyke pretty much sucks—he’s just sorta privileged and ignorant, which makes him a great part of the cast but not someone I root for very easily lmao.

Wow, I could not disagree more! The joker arc almost made me drop the webtoon because I found John's rampages unbearably repetitive and cruel. What Arlo and the others put him through was horrible, but he was kind of worse 😬 I'm sure some people found it cathartic and thought the students had it coming, but my favorability towards John hit an all time low. It's back up now but only thanks to Sera's intervention.

In contrast, I found whole new respects for Remi, Isen, and especially Blyke. Blyke literally became my favorite character 😂 he's John's foil in almost every way: they're the same body type and design, but they have different color schemes and powers. They're both kings, but have different viewpoints about what that responsibility entails. John is carefree and Blyke is more careful.

Blyke wasn't super likeable before but he was always one of the nicer Royals. Remi is the kindest Royal, but she was more privileged and ignorant than Blyke ever was. Once Blyke learned about the injustices in the system both at school and outside of it, he stepped up in a major way. He was among the first to apologize to John and he backed up Remi in her vigilante work. It feels like he was meant to be a superhero all along and I find him very easy to root for.

If I have a least favorite character, it's probably...Arlo? I don't like him. He's uppity and for WHAT? bro instigated too much. Glad he apologized but he still acts like he's in charge of everyone, especially Isen and Remi. My controversial opinion is that I don't like it when people are mean to Isen. Isen was more of an asshole in the beginning, but I'm partial to bullies turned heroic himbos, so Arlo isn't on my good list.

As far as the plot, I'm invested! It's a lot but I think it's been built up adequately and the fight scenes are as hype as ever. I'm having trouble differentiating between Ember and Spectre's roles in the story, but the stakes feel very real and I hope Jane comes out of this whole thing alive.
