My mom's birthday is in the middle of summer, and she's mentioned wanting a copy of the Chronicles of Narnia to read to my nephew. I've been interested in fore edge painting lately, and I've always loved gilded edges on books, so I've been doing some research on those--I haven't done either before. Because my usual policy is that I don't buy paper copies of books unless I'm prepared to read them more than once, and even then I try to get hardcovers--I have very few books I'm willing to risk with experimentation. I may need to go to the thrift store just for some test books.
Tumblr media
I do have this copy of Joy of Cooking that now has an unplanned landscape edge painting, just to see how much bleedthrough I get with watercolors. (Answer: almost none!) I have some other stuff I need to do first, but I'm hoping that later I'll be able to do some tests with the shockingly large stash of heat-transfer metallic foil I squirreled away to use in metallic toner-transfer prints. IDK how well this will work, but...wheee! Project materials!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If this works well I'm definitely doing at least foil edges and possibly edge paintings on my Murderbot and Discworld collections.
Tumblr media
I need to find a fabric I like to make into bookcloth. I'm trying to work as much as I can with stuff I already have, so I need to go through my fabric stash and see what I have. I know I have an entire hide of white leather, but I'm not sure I want to use that. I do know I want to design and gold foil on the cover and spine designs.
Luckily I have months and months to figure this out. If it works out and I ever get around to finishing the secret doordrobe, I'm going to make a second one for myself.

working on another mini A7 comic. I was thinking I might introduce a 'book club' patreon tier (maybe like £6) where you get sent a new mini story each month? like a physical book.
anyone into that?

Good Bye!
This is my last post as Special Collections Graduate Intern. I am now a Master of Fine Arts and I am using this post as an opportunity to share some of my own work.
My Dress, is an accordion-folded artists book printed from four hand carved linoleum blocks. Two blocks on each side of the single sheet, yellow and a deep navy. Conceived of in 2021, published in 2023 as a small boxed edition of 4. This copy will be a part of the UWM Libraries' Special Collections.
The book was a part of my thesis exhibition, In Here, Out There. My exhibition was about the work of 'becoming' queer, work typically done in safe interior spaces, like our homes where we can play and experiment with our how we perform gender. The work of 'becoming' queer involves orienting oneself towards objects that allow you to imagine new possibilities of being. In this book that object is my dress that I carefully select from my closet and pull on over my head, I then joyfully fly through the apartment and the book to the mirror in which I appreciate the work I have done.
I will be staying in Milwaukee; I love this city and have an amazing supportive community here. I will have a studio at the House of RAD and I will be teaching workshops at Anchor Press Paper and Print! Including one on creating a linocut accordion fold book, much like this one. So, keep a look out!
Also, come and see Boyfriend Material, an exhibition of Queer Milwaukee based artists, including myself, curated by artist and curator, LaNia Sproles. Open May 22 – July 15, 2023 at the Brooks Stevens Gallery, located at MIAD, 273 East Erie Street, Milwaukee.

Bound an old sort story of mine. This was my first time using the website bookbinder js which is a LIFESAVER. Much easier than manually splitting my pdf into signatures. The cover design took me a couple tries. I knew I wanted the camera, I knew I wanted there to be some silver on the cover. In the end I layered some silver paper on the cover & used paint and ink to draw the design. All lettering was done with stencils. The end-pages are my favorite part of this…for they actually fit properly! I wish the centerpiece of the cover was a bit smoother but I’m guessing I can remedy that by using thicker paper or layering more next time. Overall pretty happy with this ✨

I love the story Winter Star by @shady-tavern so much I printed it and made a book from their post! With permission of course.
If anyone has good book making tips, please share!I’d love to improve!
Tumblr media
I learned so much since this was only the second book I bound, and it’s the first one without leather work (I always start a new craft working with more difficult materials because I hate myself apparently. I learn a LOT though!) I am very proud of this book! It is a hard cover with hand embroidered/beaded front cover. The formatting and printing was actually the most difficult part. Closely followed by trying to close off the spine ends while making them look decent. I sewed a little bookmark that’s attached to the spine that I love.
Tumblr media
All the folds and binding parts line up so beautifully… I’m just in love! Anyway, go read their stories! They’re lovely! I made this so I could read it to the children in my life ❤️ (and of course read it for myself)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are definitely some things I want to work on for future book making but I’m still very proud of it!
@shady-tavern your writing is wonderful and I’m glad you do it! 💙
