Book Review for Neanderthal Seeking Human

As the first book I have read by Penny Reid, I really wanted to love it! While I did enjoy the humor (she had me laughing before I finished the first page), I just couldn’t go all in with this book. The the storyline of Janie and Quinn was solid; however, it was the subplots that consistently pulled my attention away, causing my interest to dip until we were finally able to get back to the heart of the story. Understanding Neanderthal Seeks Human was Penny’s debut novel, I believe her writing was still finding its footing and the rest of the series may be more formulated and awe-inspiring.

To say Janie has had a bad day would be a gross understatement. First, she finds out her boyfriend has been cheating on her. Next, she spectacularly destroys her work outfit and has to borrow a variety of items to resemble a partially functioning/half decent human being. But it doesn’t stop there! Of course she is also fired once she gets to work, conveniently being part of a downsizing of one. You would think mercy would be taken on her at some point but the icing on the cake, the extremely hot security guard – Sir McHotPants, the man she can’t even look in the face, has been assigned to escort her off the premises. What has she possibly done to deserve all of this?! Out of the three sisters, she was the good one, the calm one, the one who always did the right thing. Taking a deep breath (after hiding in the bathroom post firing and pre McHotPants), Quinn leaves with her head held high and resolves to get her life back on track. After sulking around the apartment and embracing her new reclusive way of life, her roommate and best friend Elizabeth suggests a girls night out. Not knowing what she signed up for, she definitely wasn’t expecting to run into McHotPants – i.e. Quinn! She also didn’t expect to wake up hungover, in her underwear, and in a strange bed the next morning! Quickly to reassure her nothing happened, Quinn offers to help Janie snag a job where he works. Going full circle and back where it all started, Janie finally feels like things are working out. Now if she can just figure out her love life. Lucky for her, Quinn has an answer for that too!

While I don’t see myself reading any more books in this series, I do highly recommend it for those who love a steamy romance with humor, suspense, drama, and a quirky group of characters that keep you smiling, guessing, laughing, and loving from beginning to end.

Hook, Line, and Sinker by Tessa Bailey

Just as much sass and humor and even more spice! 🌶⚓️ The Bellinger sisters are back! This sequel picks up months after “It Happened One Summer” leaves off. This story focuses on Hannah and her budding relationship with crab fisherman Fox Thornton, friend and shipmate to Brendan that Piper is engaged to. The novel sees character development for both Hannah and Fox as they shake off “supporting costar” doubts and self consciousness - Hannah in her career on a film set and Fox in becoming leadership on the boat crew. They also go from sure friends bonding over music to lovers that can’t keep their hands off each other and vehemently support one another in tackling their self doubt. This was not quite as fun and quirky as it’s predecessor but had a deeper, inspirational feel to it. The self discovery journey and growth is everything and then the spice is also off the charge and adds to the entertainment levels. I recommend for anyone who enjoys a good friend zone to lovers trope. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 - 3.5/5

Why I started Annotating books/How to Annotate.

I recently started this habit and it has helped me so much. Especially when I dont want to reread the whole book but a particular scene so I can just go to my notes and look at it.

It’s really good for writing reviews on goodreads. Adding quotes makes it much more interesting enough to attract the reader.

It’s pretty fun. You can use different colors for your highlights and notes. Making your notebook appear cute. On kindle though, you can’t see it colored but if you use the phone app, you can choose from a variety of three colors.

When you reread the book, you can review your notes and highlights to see if your views on something have changed or remain the same.

I feel bad for my favorite books I didn’t annotate. That time, I didn’t know about this process. Like the Cruel Prince,Acotar and NeverNight etc would have been perfect to have some annotations. Cause at times, I miss a particular scene so much but can’t seem to find it since I never bookmarked it. And that my friends, it’s frustrating.I recently reread Acotar and annotated the heck out of it and I had so much fun. Now I can easily go back and reread my fav scenes without having to reading the whole book

How do you start the habit of Annotating?

- Highlight a scene/dialogue you really like. Most of the time I even highlight a paragraph, not cause it has important information, but for the sake of the beautiful writing style.

Highlight a word you don’t know and google the definition and write it down in a notebook. I know this one sounds so like Elementary School,but it helps. Especially with classics or historical fiction.

Make notes. Either in a notebook or in the book. Your choice. If you read a pretty shocking/happy scene, you can write down your reaction.

Some different examples- not actual stories

“She aimed the gun at him and said “ it’s about time I got my revenge on you”

Your reaction- “You go, girl. He deserves it.

“And then he stopped breathing”

Your reaction- “HOW COULD YOU? YOU CRUEL AUTHOR!

I don’t have anymore tips. It’s the ones I use for myself but you can definitely watch some booktube videos on it for more ideas.

Annotating is a great habit and I encourage all of you do it.

So, I thought it would be fun to show you guys the progression of my Schwab collection. 😁

This is when I first started to collect. Everything was Shades of Magic since it was the only series of hers that I had read at the time.

I branched out and started reading more of her work and become hooked. I started collecting more and more stuff.

My collection got so big, it needed its own wall...

However, I still hadn’t peaked yet.

Today, my collection is massive and has become my pride and joy. It is my addiction.

(What’s kinda funny/sad is that not all my Schwab items are in this picture!)

Here is a shot of all her books I have (minus 1, Tunnel of Bones arc).

And there is my addiction in a nutshell 😁. I hope to collect more foreign editions of her books and of course I have preorders of her upcoming books. I’ve read all her books EXCEPT the Everyday Angel series and I hope to read it soon with my daughter ♥️.
