What's your opinion of the P!ATD bohemian rhapsody cover?
oh man I wish you’d asked me this question a couple years ago bc I would’ve delivered a full-fledged manifesto against it. and honestly I still could but I’m gonna try not to fly off the handle too much here
basically for as long as I’ve been a queen fan I’ve held the opinion that bohemian rhapsody is one of their songs that should never be covered bc no one can do it justice (the one exception is mcr, who I now consider the only artist I’d trust with any queen song including borhap). I used to rant ENDLESSLY about the moral travesty of some band butchering freddie’s masterpiece that he wrote on scraps of papers and phonebook corners and the piano he used as a headboard. I know freddie wouldn’t have cared about people covering his music but I cared, and as far as I was concerned they were making a mockery out of my favorite singer and my favorite band and one of the most important songs of all time. for the record, panic was only vaguely on my radar at the time so I had no personal grudge against them. I hated this cover, not bc panic did it, but on principle.
it is funny to look back on how passionately I berated it back in the day bc when your favorite band is one of the most popular bands of all time you can’t expect people to not cover their songs, especially a song as popular as bohemian rhapsody. but tbh I’m still a little bitter about it bc I remember all the panic fans back in the day being like “omg it’s soooooo good!!!” or even thinking brendon wrote the damn song, and it took years for people to start saying “how did we ever think this was good?” girl who is “we”??? it has been bad from the start and I have been saying this for half a decade. so yeah, long before brendon urie became a public punching bag I had a personal vendetta against him for this cover and I consider it foreshadowing to his downfall.
if we ignore my personal history and think of just how the cover sounds sonically. well. this ask actually made go back and listen to it again bc I haven’t heard it in years and WOW it is much worse than I remembered. scream.
tldr: it’s an absolute travesty

Things to note if joining the Queen Fandom:
We are an emotional mess, much like other fandoms.
1991…
Prepare for a Hot Space debate.
We hate Paul Prenter.
We have a love/hate relationship with the movie Bohemian Rhapsody.
You will have memes upon memes, quotes upon quotes, circulating your thoughts non-stop.
Maylor fic.
BoRhap isn’t even the best song on ANATO
Roger’s acting.
Roger and the Penguin.
Brian will ramble on until someone stops him
Deacy loves disco and has improvised bouts of interpretive dance 🕺🏻
No. Synths. (until 1980)
Prepare for arguments about Freddie’s sexuality. It’s best to avoid them. (I didn’t take my own advice)
The above but with Mary Austin.
Late 80s Brian is a hot mess.
Anita Dobson. (See above)
A Kind of Magic is a soundtrack album for the movie Highlander.
Freddie loved cats. (See the song ‘Delilah’)
Freddie’s solo work.
Roger’s solo work.
Brian’s solo work.
The story behind Mother Love.
Queen II is the most underrated album.
Think that covers the beginner’s basics.

- blues brothers -> one of The Movies Ever tbh. it’s got everything. ridiculous car stunts, lovable characters, a banger soundtrack and a cast filled with sooooo many musicians <333
- almost famous -> the costumes??? and the soundtrack?? and there’s a bunch of music references?? this movie was tailor made for me. also in this one scene they’re all in the tour bus singing tiny dancer and it changed my brain chemistry forever
- curse of the black pearl -> i really really like pirates lol. and johnny depp and kiera knightly?? loveeeeee. plus the ships are so so cool
- the good the bad and the ugly -> not that many thoughts on this one i just think it’s neat. but once more a banger soundtrack (seeing a patter here lmaoo) and the scenery is so so pretty
- bohemian rhapsody -> queen was my intro to rock music and the movie came out around the time i was getting into them so it holds a special place in my heart lol
i’ve got a holiday themed question of the day today: are you looking forward to any holiday traditions this winter?
Tumblr media
oh my goddddddddd all of your picks are so good! honestly mad at myself for not putting almost famous at least as an honorable mention that movie did so much smh (also same with borhap! i had just started getting really into queen when the trailers started coming out and, dude, all the content? what a great time to be a queen fan honestly. it was like the renaissance lol)
also fun question and also movie related, my family and i have a christmas tradition of watching christmas vacation every christmas eve, so definitely looking forward to that. what about you? :)

queen ii vibes but it’s movie scenes
procession: the lovable but goofy side character walking uphill in the rain to the protagonists home, determined and with a steady pace. it seems like nobody’s home, but after a moment of standing in front of the house, a light flicks on from the second floor. they smile, and start to walk towards the door.
father to son: two eyes meet from across a restaurant, two people in separate booths glance at each other. they both look back though, having just recognized the face of the other. years of memories and antics are brought to the forefront of their minds; he smirks, she looks away. later in the film, the ending of the song plays again as a reprise. they are back on their bullshit.
white queen (as it began): the protagonist is watching someone while they trip. they’d offered, because they don’t like the drugs themselves, but find listening to the descriptions of their friend’s high just depressing to listen to. they lay back on the leather couch as their friend crashes, and they fight sleep in case they wake up. the room is messy and that’s what they focus on instead of the fact that they’re alone.
some day one day: a soft indie film montage of a couple falling in love over the summer, there’s a scene where they splash water onto each other in a lake, and another with an overhead shot as they drive away on a long straight road.
the loser in the end: the protagonist just got into a bar fight and is driving home in the night. their fists are bloody but they sing along sloppily with the windows down because their air conditioning is broken and the air is thick as soup.
ogre battle: two opposing sides meet at the battle front, and the protagonist and antagonist meet in the middle on horses. they aren’t enemies, their dynamic is more teasing than angry. words are shared between them and only them, and they signal their armies to come into battle in sync with each other; a raised hand. they stay still as their armies advance towards each other with cries and the clanging of armor.
the fairy feller’s master-stroke: the protagonist and their friends have all dressed up in renaissance period dresses and suits, and have found a costume party where they could stay for a while. they’re talking with strangers, when they hear a loud crash and a scream from outside the window. they only exchange glances before picking up their large skirts or hats and running quickly out the door and onto the street in giggles.
nevermore: the camera stays clear on the protagonist’s face as they stare blankly ahead, the rest of the world passing around them. they’re laying down and people try to talk, but nothing can get their attention. eye contact is not lost with the lens save for long blinks accompanied by sighs.
the march of the black queen: the villain has set their plan in motion, and everything is working out just as they’d planned. they watch from somewhere above the city as chaos ensues, and they’re pleased that the hero has no idea where to start. the air is warm and sticky, and that’s what the villain cares about while people die beneath their feet.
funny how love is: another montage, but it shows a wife falling out of love with her husband. her husband still kisses her temple every morning as she reads, and still holds her, but she grows bored. her smile fades and her eyes become less adoring and more longing for what they once had. she can’t figure out why this is happening.
seven seas of rhye: this one plays as the credits roll, and the song starts just before the screen goes to black. there’s a sequel coming out soon and the end is a cliffhanger but you still feel satisfied as you read the names of your favorite characters rolling on the screen

Brian May interview at Italian program Che Tempo Che Fa (Rai 3 - 5 October 2021 )
Part 1 (on Youtube)
undefined
youtube
Hi everyone! I tried to translate the interview that Brian had with the Italian TV program Che Tempo Che Fa, with the host Fabio Fazio. This is only the 1st half of the interview, that can be found on Youtube, while I'll translate the next part next week so stay tuned.
Before reading:
Please keep in mind that English is not my natuve language, I'm Italian and I'm not a professional translator, I simply tried my best with the skills I have and a bit of help from the internet. There may be some errors here and there, I apologise.
While I constantly tried to hear Brian's voice to quote him directly, the translator's voice was loud and I couldn't hear Brian most of the time. My translation is a mix of what the translator says and what I could hear from Brian so please don't take these as exact quotes.
Part 2 is on Rai's website, I'll do my best to translate it for next week! He talks a bit about Freddie, about Back To the Light and other things.
Translation under the cut.
Fabio Fazio: Being able to have him with us is a great surprise. 50 years ago, along with Freddie Mercury, he started one of the most extraordinary bands of all time that sold more than 300 billions of discs. Before having him with us we’d love to dedicate to him and to Queen this video:
FF: A rock legend, with Freddie Mercury he’s been the soul and the founder of Queen. From London: Brian May!
Brian May: Ciao Fabio! Thank you for having me!
FF: This is so emotional, we hope to see you soon here [Fazio meant in studio/in Italy], we’ll wait for you with open arms. (Fazio fanboys some more)
BM: Thank you, I can’t wait to be back in Italy, I’ve always loved it a lot. I apologise for the sunglasses, but I have a problem, I have an infection, it’s not my fault.
FF: Rockstars can do anything they want, there’s no problem. I’m sorry about the infection, I hope you’ll be better soon.
BM: But if you can stand me I can take them off, so you see me as I am. (Removes his sunglasses)
FF: Oh feel free to keep them on if you want to, it’s not a problem.
BM: Oh no, I wanted to show you how ugly I am (laughs)
FF: (laughs)
FF: So, this is a year full of important anniversaries, first of all 50 years ago Queen was born, I’ve heard that with Roger Taylor you didn’t want to do a massive celebration, he [idk if he refers to Roger or Bri, also this may not be the exact quote] said “Being still around and playing music is already the biggest celebration”.
BM: That’s right, we didn’t want to make too much noise, you know, 50 years makes us feel very old but I’m happy to be here, to work well. We will be on tour next year in May and we’ll be in Bologna; we really hope so because it’s been a long time and we really have to go on with what we’ve been doing.
FF: It would be amazing if you came here before the tour! But now I want to show our audience a very very beautiful thing: three days ago this very special book came out, the title is “Queen in 3D” and it’s a new updated edition [it’s the edition with the pages about BoRhap that came out like last year but not in Italy yet], completely written by Brian May, the [Italian] publisher is Gremese and it’s a beautiful book! Full of facts, memories, photographs, tales and passion. (fanboys some more) It’s like living the whole story of Queen at Brian’s side, and also our own lives’ stories as we had Queen as our soundtrack.
BM: (picks up the OWL) There’s also a tool to look at the pictures in three dimensions!
FF: Yes! Look, I have it too, my viewer. So, tell us about it!
BM: Because they’re not just pictures in two dimensions, they’re tridimensional and there’s a big difference!
FF: That’s a huge passion of yours! Now- in the end we found out that, alongside music, you’ve always studied and followed your passion for 3D photography!
BM: Yeah, I probably have too many passions! You see, of course my main passion is music, then stereoscopy, and also astronomy and I even got a PhD. And then animals, I love animals, protecting wildlife and animal rights.
FF: Exactly, Brian May has a PhD in Physics [*astrophysics], in fact his dad wanted for him to have a more reliable job, as a scientist. You’ve also been a teacher, right? While you were already writing songs for Queen.
BM: Yes, yes, I did! I taught maths I think at middle school, it was great but my students were a bit suspicious and kept asking me “are you a rockstar, sir?” while I was training them.
FF: (Laughs) Well they’d have noticed shortly after!
BM: (says something on the notes of “sure they did!”)
FF: So, during your whole time with Queen you always took pictures, so you documented everything.
BM: I did.
FF: And being them in 3D…
BM: It’s actually very easy! If we had more time I’d show you how, even with an iPhone or any smartphone you can take tridimensional pictures. You just have to take two photos one next to the other, if you go to my website there’s the whole explanation- because we need more tridimensional photos nowadays! I’ve convinced a lot of people, myself included, and NASA scientists as well. Stereoscopy goes from the Victorian era to space!
FF: That’s true! Why do you say we need more 3D photographs? What does it mean, what do they add?
BM: Because we have two eyes for a good reason, we have the privilege to see depth and it’s been important for our evolution, for example to see where our prey is or if we’re being attacked. Stereoscopy has been unfairly neglected.
FF: This passion, if I’m not wrong, comes from… wait, was that the guitar?
BM: Oh this? I always have one in my hands, I’m glued to my guitar!
FF: It’s the Red??! (literally glows up)
[Brian plays something but the audio is bad and there’s applause as well so we can’t hear anything, sadly.]
FF: But… is it the Red Special? I can’t see very well from here, is it that??
BM: Yeah, yeah this is my Red Special that I built with my dad many years ago, three thousand years ago. It still works. [?? Here I don’t know if Brian has actually said 300 but the translator surely did and I’m a bit confused]
FF: Can we… Can we hear it playing?
[the sound is again very low but better than before]
[applauses]
FF: In the book… [Brian keeps playing]
FF: Thank you!
BM: I’m trying to let you hear it…
FF: The sound isn't good, we can’t hear much, but we heard just a little… we tried… In the book you tell its story, you built it with your father! You used wood from your fireplace.
BM: Yes, exactly. There was a hundred year old fireplace and we used its wood, then some springs from a motorcycle… It’s been made with lots of litter but I’ve used it throughout my career and I want to keep it ‘til I live.
FF: That’s very touching, beautiful. I’ve heard that during concerts there’s a person whose job is to watch over it.
BM: Yeah there’s always a babysitter for it! During the concerts I always have it with me of course, but we all take very good care of it and keep our eyes on her, she’s an old lady and needs special attention!
FF: Your dad was an electrical engineer, right? He realized that yours was a serious business only later in your career... was it in New York?
BM: Yes, you know it’s always been really hard for him to accept that I wouldn’t carry on with my astronomy studies because I wanted to be a rockstar, and he told me “Why are you wasting it all away to be a rockstar?” -Yes, that's a photo of my dad- It took him a while. We were at Madison Square Garden and after the show he came to me, held my hand, and told me “Now I understand”. It’s been a beautiful moment.
I think we all want to please our parents and I think I managed to do that.
[Time was running out so Fazio had to change topic.]
FF: Well, we’re speaking to a legend, I’m so happy and starstruck and I thank you with all my heart.

Ok so dont hate me but im a queen fan that kinda came from borhap.
So let me explain: I listened to queen all the time but mainly their most popular songs. Like the greatest hits playlist minus a few on there. I constantly played the same 12 songs over and over again and the first song from them that I listened to that wasn’t a greatest hit was all dead all dead. Anyways, i watched the movie for the first time with my sister and i heard all the songs I hadn’t beforehand so i kept listening to the borhap soundtrack until i started listening to more and more until I listened to all their songs so i know a lot of people hate fans that came from the movie so theres that

The borhap thing with making sure the live aid sequence lives up to the original and making that the entire focus of the film is stupid, but i think it makes sense seeing how brian and roger being the executive music producers are mostly involved with the soundtrack and the actual performance bits in the film, instead of the dialogue scenes. The cast did say that they would only show up and give them tips and advice during the shooting of live aid and any performance scenes, and then left the cast to their own devices whenever it’s a regular scene. I’m not surprised that the live aid scene has collectively earned the most positive reviews and praises from everyone including critics seeing how that’s probably where brian and roger focused on the most and involve them taking care of what they do best, but it’s a shame that the rest of the movie’s not on the same level. And in hindsight the decision of including the entire live aid set in the movie is a bad one imo. I think you’ve said it before and i agree: i don’t want to watch a full reenactment of live aid when they didn’t even add anything to it.
See, I don’t even agree that the Live Aid scene was good because of Brian and Roger’s potential involvement: I think it was good because it was solely focused on Queen’s excellent music. Even people who dislike the movie enjoy that scene because it’s basically just watching a Queen concert. I did say that, yes. The scene cuts out 25 minutes of screen time which could’ve been devoted to plot, characterization, and accuracy, and why the fuck would I watch some reenactment when the entirety of the original performance is on YouTube? Once again, it’s lazy filmmaking. The only thing it did was remind people at the end of a trite, clichéd film why Queen was great to begin with, but that could’ve been done throughout the movie.

16, 26, 36 and 46 of the Queen asks 😊
16 An album track that deserved to be released as a single?
Action This Day. How the hell could you have this total bop on an album and decide to release, well, any song from Hot Space other than Under Pressure instead?
26 Best Brian song?
He has written some gems let’s be honest. Best song though - I’d have to go with ‘39. Perfectly simple but with a killer twist.
36 White Queen or March of the Black Queen?
White Queen. Especially those amazing early 70s live performances with the soaring ethereal guitar.
46 Smile or Queen’s version of Doin’ Alright?
My favourite version is the BoRhap soundtrack version!

Ah okay! Thanks for clarifying 😅
2. Why do you write fanfiction?
It started out as just something I do for fun and a nice way to share stories. Later on, it became a way to express myself, to explore kinks and tropes I enjoy, to open up about my trauma, and to share my culture with people.
5. What’s the fic you’re most proud of?
Ahahaha there was actually another writer's meme ask that had this question too. Of course, that one only had 15 questions, which is why I'm assuming you meant this certain writer's ask post.
Not to sound like I'm repeating myself, but it's a tie between Ocean Song and Such a Lovely Place, Such a Lovely Face!
21. Favorite pairing to write for? (platonic or romantic!)
Hands down it's hardzzello for the romantic pairings. I just really love writing these two falling in love again and again.
If it's platonic pairs, I have no favorites. I love writing all the pairings that you can have between the four borhap boys.
22. Do you listen to anything while you write?
It depends! Sometimes I don't listen to anything. When I do, I like to look for songs that I can listen to but doesn't pull away my focus from what I'm writing. I have ADHD so like this can be very tricky. Recently, I've torrented the entire soundtrack from this music game called Deemo which is nice because most of it is instrumental, and if there are lyrics it's usually in another language so I don't end up singing along instead of writing.
One time, I literally could not focus with anything but one single song. So I ended up listening to Visitor by Of Monsters and Men on repeat for like 3 days straight, and only that song.
24. One-shots or multi-chaptered works?
I've been both actually! When I first started writing, I'd have answered the one-shots because I wasn't so sure about myself and my writing and my fics tended to be on the shorter side with simple storylines. Now, I'm more confident and I want to be able to tell more of my fics in a lengthier manner, so I'd say multi-chaptered works!
