Would you ever write a Barduil AU set in Middle Earth?
I would! @lonelyheartsmotel and I have one somewhere in our pile of AU ideas, and I'm really excited to work on that one when it's time.
In addition, when I was working on a bagginshield canon fixit (that ended up putting me off bagginshield for a while even though I finished it lol) I also tried my hand at a barduil one-shot, under the premise that they knew each other before BotFA. Bard remembers. Thranduil -- doesn't. I dropped an excerpt under the cut (because I have zero self-control).
“No,” Bard says at once. Thorin Oakenshield, in spite of moments of reason, looked and sounded like a madman. “There’s no reason for him to suspect Bilbo took it. As long as Bilbo keeps his mouth shut, he’ll be fine."
Thranduil looks unconvinced. “There is no madness like love. If what you have said is true, then I fear for the Halfling’s life, whether Oakenshield discovers the betrayal or not.”
“The Halfling’s name is Bilbo,” Bard says. He doesn’t want to correct Thranduil, but he remembers Bilbo correcting the dwarves on his name not so long ago, and feels like he owes it to the hobbit. “Bilbo Baggins.”
“Bilbo Baggins,” Thranduil says, and snorts. “Some folk have the strangest names.”
“They probably feel that way about your name,” Bard says, and regrets it. Thranduil’s eyebrows lift. “I’ll be going now.”
“Stay.” Thranduil retrieves Bard’s goblet and refills it. He holds it out to Bard, and it would be rude to refuse. Bard might be a bargeman, lowest of the low in Lake-town, but he knows what manners are, and better yet, how to use them. “Do you find my name to be strange? You pronounce it well.”
Of course Bard pronounces it well. He had a lot of opportunities to practice. He ducks the question, drinks some wine, and asks one of his own. “Does it mean something in your language?”
“It does,” Thranduil says. He hasn’t gone back to sit in his chair; instead he’s leaning against the table, watching Bard. Bard’s seen those eyes in his dreams on and off for the past twenty years. It’s not helping him with anything to see them now.

concept: a barduil fic where bard and thranduil arrange a marriage between sigrid and legolas as a way of projecting their own feelings onto their children. (this would of course have to ignore all the political/cultural baggage of an elf/mortal marriage, unless you think the silvans were more prone to such a thing. but still, thranduil hails from doriath so like, the beren/luthien symbolism would NOT be lost on him. anyway)
but sigrid is a lesbian and legolas is gay and/or aroace and neither of them are very enthusiastic about the idea. legolas and sigrid befriend each other and figure out what’s going on with their dads and a comedy of errors ensues as they try to break off their own marriage while getting their dads together. also legolas ropes tauriel into helping them and she and sigrid fall in love.

It might be the Italian in me speaking, but when Bilbo defended that lil crochet thingie from criticism I felt that. A coinosseur of finesse, I dare say.
And, even though he might not be interested in gold and stuff, I’m pretty sure he would have complimented the handiwork of that mithril shirt for at least two more hours if Thorin hadn’t canonically shut him up with a kiss.

I ended up turning a simple sketch into a full on art piece. X3 I will admit that this was a lot of fun colouring and a lot of fun designing! With me doing the background and all that it was very refreshing to try and push past what I'd normally be making. UuU
Designing Fem!Kíli was so much fun here and I love how it turned out and I hope you do too!

really though i love the trope when bilbo goes back to the shire and then thorin comes for him and they get together, because thinking of bilbo lonely at the end of the movies kill me and i always want thorin to come back and comfort him. you can tell they really understood each other at the end of botfa and my favorite fixit fics keep that, the hurt/comfort is just so good ;_;
PREMIUM BAGGINSHIELD CONTENT TBH 👌👌👌

looking for a thorin to my bilbo
Hi! I’m Collie! I’m 22, nonbinary, she/her/they/them. I’ve fallen headfirst back into The Hobbit fandom and I’m looking for a Thorin for my Bilbo.
I prefer paragraph-multiparagraph (though I’m trying to train myself out of writing novellas), third person pov. I love to chat OOC and belief that good chemistry OOC translates to good chemistry IC. I prefer to roleplay over Discord! In terms of reply speed, I honestly can range from a day to a few weeks depending on how real life is treating me, but I also prioritize the mental wellbeing of myself and my partners over replies. RP is supposed to be fun, not a chore!
I’d like to RP with partners 18+. I will not do NSFW with any mun or muse under 18, nor will I jump right into smut. I prefer to get to know people before I NSFW.
In terms of plots, I do have a few ideas; the old ‘Frodo is Bilbo and Thorin’s love child’ is something I’m fond of. Bilbo-takes-the-Ring-to-Mordor!AU, Arranged marriage!AU, Someone-is-a-dragon!AU, or even just plain old BOTFA fixit goodness. I’m very open and flexible, and would even be open to exploring multiple threads if you are.
HMU if you’re interested <3 CK#5915

how’d u get into writing? like, writing fic and being part of the silm community, being Known, that stuff? i’m really new to being a silm cc and i’d love to know ur advice! also: how’d u build up the confidence to start posting meta/hcs? bc i have a Lot of hcs and meta ideas but also i’m really anxious abt posting them bc yknow anxiety is like that
these are some great questions, anon! I’m gonna go through them one by one :)
how’d u get into writing?
not to be like, super cliche, but I’ve...kind of always been a writer? as long as I can remember I’ve been telling stories, and when I was too young to read or write I would dictate them to my mom, who would type them up for me and help me choose clipart illustrations to accompany them. when I got old enough I would always be writing; I attempted my first novel at age 9, and while that never really went anywhere I did finish the darn thing and it had some pretty sophisticated plot twists for a 9-year-old!
like, writing fic
around the same time I got into fandom! I was deep into Warrior cats (like. really deep) and I believe I started writing my first fics when I was like? 10 or 11? my memory is kind of fuzzy on the order of things, but I know I got an account on the Warriors forums when I was 9, and that I was already posting my fic there when I made my FFN account. I believe I was 12 when that happened, but who knows. I haven’t the faintest idea of what happened with those forums, but uhhh pretty much all of my Warriors fic is still up on FFN lmao. you could probably find that if you want to but um...maybe don’t?
my first Big Fic was a self-insert of...my entire 5th/6th grade class into the then-current timeline of the Warriors books...well. I honestly think that might still be my most popular fic of all time l m a o though I try not to think about it because Hashtag Cringe. though as much as I look back on that time with a “yikes,” I am very grateful for the Warriors fandom in a way? that place was so accepting and encouraging of OCs, of AUs, of completely disregarding canon, of worldbuilding that is completely alien from canon - it was a fantastic sandbox to begin with, there were so many ways to write stories and practically all of them were accepted and had fellow fans invested in them!
and being part of the silm community,
soooo I wrote Warriors fic until my freshman year of high school (wow sdjfhkdsjfh), which was when BOTFA came out, and I was absolutely wrecked by the ending and immediately started writing my own fixit fic. I was also super hooked on Kiliel! so that was my intro to the Tolkien fandom; and simultaneously, I joined tumblr, and, well, the rest is history tbh.
I honestly do not remember when I first read the Silm, but I kind of got into the more obscure parts of the Tolkien fandom through fandom osmosis, and I do have a vague memory of doodling the Finwean family tree in geometry class so it might have been later on in freshman year? that was also the same time I was having my Queer Awakening, and Russingon definitely contributed to me unlearning my internalized queerphobia, so probably around then.
anyway - queer awakening, tumblr, Tolkien, transitioning from FFN to AO3 - all of that was happening around the same time. I know I dipped my toes in the Silm fandom then, but I was still primarily a Hobbit fic writer focusing on Kiliel. toward the end of high school I kind of shifted to LOTR and (qp) Gigolas...but somehow the Silm fandom is the most active of the Big Three within the Tolkien fandom, and I was getting dragged further and further in.
it wasn’t until @backtomiddleearthmonth 2019, my freshman year of college, that I really dove into writing Silm fic! I picked some Silm-specific bingo cards and never looked back :D that was really not all that long ago but I am obsessed in a way I don’t really remember being even with TH/LOTR, I obviously cannot see the future but I anticipate hanging out here for a long time. the Silm fandom is great overall and there’s just so much material to work with!! <3
being Known, that stuff?
so I don’t really have a whole lot of context on how “well known” I am in the fandom?? definitely within the past year and a half or so I’ve noticed that I like, get asks like this, and get a significant amount of notes on my posts, and I’ve made a lot of fandom friends especially since I joined some Silm servers on Discord (hmu if you want invites; I’m on the SWG server and 2 general Silm servers and the Russingon server) this past year. and I have 3,000 followers as of this month - and while ever since I hit 1k I don’t particularly pay attention to my follower count I can definitely say that I have more engagement now than I used to! but it took me a long time to build this “audience,” I suppose; I’ve been around the Tolkien fandom since late 2014, so nearly 6 years of this, lol.
really the best way to build a following, in my experience, is to just post a lot of stuff. when I started making edits I got a lot more engagement, because for a long time I would post one every day! (I made them in batches and queued them; I didn’t actually make one every day lol...and now I’m too busy to do that, so I just make edits for events and whenever I feel like it) And I have [checks ao3] 145 works in the Silm fandom as of today - I’m fairly prolific! I’ve come to generally expect 3-10 comments on most of my oneshots, which is a lot more than I used to have back in the day. consistency and quantity are more likely to attract people to your work - and quality, of course.
also: how’d u build up the confidence to start posting meta/hcs?
I’ve been writing since I was very young, and I’ve been writing fic for like...11 years? I think? in that time I’ve produced a lot of garbage, but imo most of that was in my Warrior cats phase, so I came into the Tolkien fandom with confidence in myself and my writing. I’m also working on original fiction on the side (I hope to eventually become a published fantasy author, but right now school takes up most of my time that I don’t devote to fandom, which gives me more immediate gratification and also is just Very Fun) and I know I’m a good writer.
basically, I’ve been doing this for like...half my life, and I’m still fairly young, so I’ve had time to build up my skill and confidence and I know I’m only going to get better with time. you will get better with practice. like I said, I’ve written a lot of terrible stuff, and it’s only through sucking for a long time that I’ve gotten to the point I am now. and I am far from perfect; I know I still have lots of room to grow!
for meta and headcanons specifically, I started with writing fic, and then when I didn’t think I could stretch something into an entire fic I would just make a hc post. I have a vivid memory of writing my first meta in a notebook during driver’s ed because it was so goddamn boring and I had Thoughts about Tauriel and Thranduil!
in my experience, meta comes from having Opinions and wanting to share them and most importantly to back them up - you need to have sources! you need to have reasons! you need to have justification! otherwise it’s not meta, it’s a headcanon or an AU. which is fine!! I love hc/AU!!! but they are not the same as meta, and I’m a stickler for being accurate when it comes to meta. if you have sources and shit to back you up, that will help you build the confidence to share your meta.
sharing disinformation and passing it off as meta instead of just coming out and saying this is a headcanon/baseless theory/AU or whatever is such a fandom pet peeve of mine; it’s not bad for something to not be Accurate! you just have to have that disclaimer - and even when you’re writing meta, you’re offering an interpretation of the text, and you need to acknowledge that other interpretations also exist and are valid.
um. I hope this answers your questions? and sorry for basically word-vomiting my entire life story, lol. this post got long; the main reason I’ve written so much fic is because I really just cannot shut up for the life of me. sooo if you can tear of that filter of being shy and just. say shit. you can go so far~!
OH and one more thing - I can’t believe I almost forgot this - but part of being a writer is participating in the community. this is code for LEAVE A DAMN COMMENT IF YOU LIKE A FIC. that’s how I made most of my fandom friends before Discord! I follow @ao3feed-silmarillion and stalk that blog for new Silm fics; I read the ones that interest me and comment on them.
I know this is not really the most common way for folks to find fic but it’s so rewarding to interact with new fic, new writers, new commentors, new stories - you can find gems that don’t rise to the top of the kudos/bookmark lists; you become friends with your fellow writers; you can watch people grow and change; you support smaller content creators. yeah, you might not be getting Just The Best Stuff, but it’s so so so worth it!!
and if you make friends in the comment section of other people’s fic - I guarantee you some of them will go to your AO3 profile and check out your fic, too! and they’ll leave comments! this is a fic community, and that’s what I cherish about fandom most of all, tbh.
anyway - again - sorry for rambling so much, but I hoped this helped! feel free to send in another ask, or to come talk to me off anon if you’d like! and definitely send me your stuff if/when you decide to share it; I would love to support you!!! <3

Fic Writer Interview
tagged by @dialux, thank you so much!!
Name: I am starlightwalking on ao3!
Fandoms: I’ve been mostly in the Tolkien fandom ever since I joined AO3; these days I write mostly Silm fic. But I also dabble in TAZ and Les Mis from time to time!
Where you post: AO3 and tumblr!
Most Popular One-shot: (going by hits for this one, though personally I measure the success of a fic by comments more than anything else. but hits are probably the best measure for popularity)
(extremely long sigh) ......... “Free from the ties that bind,” the only Fast and Furious fic I’ve written (and the only one I plan to write). people are just really here for Dom and Brian, which, like, I get that, there’s a reason I wrote the fic, but c’mon this is NOT something i’m like, The Most Proud Of
for Tolkien oneshots, though, it’s my Gigolas fic from TRSB19, “Love and Fear” :) I like that one a lot!
and for Silm oneshots specifically, it’s “It is the star to every wand’ring bark,” a Maglor-comes-home-to-Valinor fic I wrote for B2MeM19. I totally get why that one is well-liked; Maglor is a beloved character who FINALLY gets his happy ending here ;-;
Most Popular Multichap: A Merrier Place, the first BotFA fixit fic I wrote, way back in 2015. I get why, we were all in need of fixits then, but also I have way better fics now ;-; I don’t think I’ll surpass this anytime soon, it outstrips my next-most-popular fic by over 2k hits.
Favorite story you’ve written so far: “One More Time With Feeling,” aka the Russingon Fake Dating AU I wrote for TRSB20! I had so much fun writing this, I think it’ll be my favorite for awhile :D
Fic you were nervous to post: oh man I’m always super nervous posting smut; I think especially “the fire of life” (also written for TRSB20) was nervewracking because of how intense it got and also because there was a LOT of plot and I was worried about characterization too.
How do you choose your titles: Well, I’m currently waiting for someone to notice the pattern in the fic titles within the wondrous parts of you and I... but generally I’ll pull a quote from either the fic itself or a song, book, etc.
Do you outline: oh yeah absolutely! anything that isn’t super spontaneous gets an outline; sometimes even those fics do too. whether or not I stick to the outline is a toss-up, but I’m a planner for sure.
Complete: I’ve only ever not completed one fic (the Kiliel space AU I took down with the vague idea of turning into an original story) and it still haunts me. I am very determined to finish all my fics at some point; I hate leaving things hanging! As of now (12/8/20), 294 of my total 298 fics are marked as complete. Most of those are oneshots, though.
In progress: I have 4 fics marked as in-progress on AO3: Moonlight, the spiritual successor to A Merrier Place in that it’s a second, hopefully better take on a BotFA fixit AU; Cause and Consequence, the story of my Silm OC Ryndil; Roads Go On, my Modern Middle-earth retelling of LoTR; and In the Grey, the story of another Silm OC, Thennes.
Those aren’t my only WIPs, of course - I’m also working on a few different series! I still have ideas for the Feanorian Redemption verse, though they’re mostly “filler” fics, not actually plot-focused stories; the world as we know it, my Silm modern AU, still has a ways to go with plot (not to mention the filler stuff I have ideas for!); the wondrous parts of you and I (linked in a previous answer) aka the Trans Finno Verse, is likewise a ways from completion; My dearest cousin(s) (aka Finrod FUCKS) has been gathering dust since I posted the first installment but I do plan to finish it eventually; and finally synchronize into a love you’ve never known, aka the Russingon Fake Dating AU, has a few more installments I’m planning on writing, including the currently-about-halfway-done story of Finno’s POV of the main fic :)
Oh, and I have several WIPs that are currently languishing in my Google Drive. :P
Coming soon/not yet started: I’m currently working on holiday exchanges and events! But after that I’m planning to update Roads Go On, and then maybe focus on some of the fics I haven’t shared with y’all yet.
Prompts?: I love taking prompts! they’re not currently open (maybe after the holidays?) but I have a lot of fun writing ficlets for other people :D
Upcoming work you’re most excited about: I am constantly daydreaming about my Russingon Arranged Marriage AU, which starts off as a comedy of errors about Mae and Finno and their dads but eventually just turns into a sprawling AU that’s really just an excuse to give everyone a bajillion kids and have everything be okay for once. When will I write this? Frankly I have no idea but I hope I will eventually!
i tag @buffintruder @absynthe--minded @aowyn @nikosheba @elesianne @crackinthecup @jail-crow-of-mandos and @thishazeleyeddemon - if you’d like to, no pressure :)
