Completed novelette. 13 chapters, 10.8k words and my only finished story, discounting a cringe 8 chapter short story I wrote when I was 12. Am I proud of this? It's not my magnum opus, that's for sure. I wrote this in 2 months. However, I'm happy that I finished a story and hope to write many more in future.

Summary:

Shadowed by a civilian woman who knows of his profession and yet doesn't care, the assassin for hire known as "The Raven" can't help but act more human.

When the woman, Hannah, worms her way deeper and deeper into the wretched life he lives, The Raven wishes that he was strong enough to turn her away. But his infatuation and her damned persistence won't let him.

As the two spiral deeper down a path of no return, The Raven has to wonder, “Who’s ruin will this lead to?”

Vivien from The Frost Prince's Paramour? feeling cold and angry for 195 words. This is only significant because there's a curse on him that causes him to always be cold and will eventually freeze him to death. The only thing that can stave it off is human contact but his family want him to die so he's forbidden from being touched. Otherwise, this is just him having a pity party.

I really wanted to share the newer piece a wrote for this WIP (A Pane-ful Scene) because I love it so much but I think I should keep it in my pocket cuz I might actually use it.

High key fanfiction of A's Academy For Gifted Girls set post story. It's basically that one prompt about the hero and villain's rivalry being a prank on their brother the mayor except these guys are girls. 1360 words.

And that final shot of Britin? 😭 It says so much to me to see Brian just draped over Justin and it’s clearly not the first time. It just screams to me how Brian shows how much he loves Justin through his physical body. You don’t pass out on top of someone like that without being fully comfortable with them…

This is where I'm at my happiest creatively, I love thinking in scenes it's my gif process of being able to see a quote/line of dialogue and either jump to a parallel or think of which moments slot in. Kinda like the lyrics set I did for you, so any quotes/poetry/lyrics you associate with them as always send my way it may spark some creativity!

I was feeling down (as you know lol) with my gifs so I'm trying to make more things like this which don't stress me out as the scenes do, and trying out new gif layouts.

But yes that final scene of Brian being so nakedly raw and vulnerable (no pun intended 😛) all his walls and defences are gone and as you say he is an actions speak louder than words kinda guy, physical touch is his communication and we see that as he clings to Justin. Justin himself comes to realise this "he showed me he loved me everyday." Brian canonically can't keep his hands off Justin which makes him being so affronted at Brian wanting to cuddle so fucking hilarious - god that entire conversation is cringe the execution to get Justin to NY was so poor 🤦🏻‍♀️

You sense Brian is finally at peace in a weird way in that scene because he's no longer hiding how he feels, the dreaded "love" weight has been lifted and that's what makes it even more heartbreaking because we know Justin's leaving. Justin truly was his exception to everything.

8/15/2022 DAB Transcript

Nehemiah 9:22-10:39, 1 Corinthians 9:19-10:13, Psalm 34:1-10, Proverbs 21:13

Today is the 15th day of August, welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you today as we approach the center of another one of our months together on our journey. It’s great to be here with you today, great to just exhale, let it all kinda slip away for a little bit, focus our attention on the Scriptures, focus our affection upon the Lord and take the next step forward together, which leads us back out into the book of Nehemiah. And we’ll pick up the story from where we left off, today Nehemiah chapter 9 verse 22 through 10 verse 39.

Commentary:

Okay in first Corinthians, Paul is continuing to sort of layout his formula of ministry. He's answering questions that he had been asked, let's remember that like, this is a letter and so, Paul answers questions that we don't know exactly what those questions were, we can just sort of determine it by the way that he answers it. But he, he says like, about the thing that you wrote to me about and then he answers this, and so, there's some of that in all these letters because it's kind of a back-and-forth. Like, they couldn’t text each other, they couldn’t email each other. They couldn't check up on anybody’s status. So, these letters were a way of communication when they were apart. And so, Paul was talking like, in yesterday's reading that carries over and gets concluded in today's reading, some of the different things about freedom and his philosophy of ministry. So, he was saying yesterday, like, it's right and appropriate and proper that the person who comes and teaches you or brings the word of God into your life and gives you counsel, that that person is able to supply and support his family by doing this like, it's a job. And then Paul kinda goes on to say but I don't like, I haven't done that, I haven’t put a burden on anybody but it's right and good, because it's actually a comprehensive and full-time job. And Paul has talked about freedom, freedoms from the perspective of a person saying I can do whatever I want because I'm free. Paul’s applying this to his ministry outlook by saying I'm free, and we know Paul was free like, he's a free Roman citizen, but he's free in Christ, but he is found it meaningful to look at himself as a slave to everybody. So, he's completely free but he is humbling himself and trying to behave as a servant and kinda taking on that posture changes the way you look at everybody. If you're not superior and looking down at somebody because you're better than they are, if, even if you are, even if you got more money, got a better job, have more kids, have a bigger house, have better cars like, whatever you, whatever criteria you want to create, even if you are those things, to humble yourself from within and look at everyone as if you are their servant, changes the way you look at everyone. Or pulling this back in Paul’s own words and I quote, “to the Jews I became like a Jew, so that I might gain Jews. To those that were under the law, I became like a person under the law. Thought, I myself am not under the law, so that I might gain those who are under the law. To those who are without the law, I became like a person without the law, though I am not without God's law, but I’m within the law of Christ, so that I might gain those who are without the law. To the weak, I became weak, so that I might gain the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I may save at least some and I do everything for the sake of the Gospel, so that I may share it along with others.” And it is indeed, a game changer when we are not vying for superiority. It is a game changer that when we humble ourselves, looking at everyone as an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to serve. However, it's a whole lot easier to say things like this than to live things like this and be like this. And so, we can listen to that posture and that is a game changer to just, no matter what status in life you are in, to understand that you are here as an ambassador of the kingdom of God, to reveal the kingdom and introduce people to Jesus. And in God's kingdom, nobody is superior to anyone. None of us deserve anything. That might be something we can do, if we are consciously paying attention but we would have to say at minimum, it takes incredible vigilance and awareness and self-awareness and self-discipline. So, Paul gives us a picture of what that looks like, one that they could certainly understand when he wrote the letter, but when we can very easily understand today. And I quote Paul, “do you not know that when runners compete in the stadium, they all run, but only one receives the prize, run like that to win. Everyone who competes in the game’s exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable victor’s wreath, but we do it for an imperishable one, that is why there is nothing aimless about the way I run.” Right, and so, Paul's running is to look at everyone and try to serve them and to fit into their context, as opposed to trying to draw them into his story, he tries to get into their story, right. So, if there Jews, he understands that story, he enters into that story. If they’re Gentiles, he’s been among them, he understands them, he acts like the. If they’re weak, then he enters into their weakness. This is his diligent, vigilant way of running and he is running to win, and it requires incredible vigilance and awareness, to live within that posture. And so, Paul is saying, and I quote, “that is why there is nothing aimless about the way I run. There is no pummeling of the year, in the way I box. Instead, I hit my body hard and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be rejected.” So, we are getting insight from Paul's own testimony about himself and his ministry philosophy, we are also getting counsel that was given to the early church. So, these are the postures that they're trying to espouse, as they go out into the world and conduct their lives. And they apply to us in the same way. And it’s not hard for us to understand like, if we’re gonna live for Jesus, then let's live like a runner who has disciplined themselves and made it to the stadium right, an elite athlete, who is trying to win. That's the picture before us, which right, it's gonna take self-discipline, awareness, vigilance, humility, and self-control. But this is also the path to true freedom.

Prayer:

And so, Holy Spirit, we invite You to come into that, we confess, we have biases, we have stories, we have convictions, we have all kinds of things that are going on within us, that would keep us from looking at another person and allowing us to be humble enough to humble ourselves and's see if there's anything that we can do, on Your behalf to serve. And just to have that posture, doesn't mean that we go out walking down the street and we can’t get anything in our lives done. Because we’re just trying to see who we might serve in some way, it's being available always at a moment’s notice, as opportunity arises, that we are aware that we are Your ambassadors and can do so much good and so small amount of time, if we’re just paying attention. Help us to put this in practice today, because as we practice these postures of heart, we’re going to be doing good in the world. And as we practice, we will get better, like a self-disciplined runner who makes it to the stadium, like a boxer who trains their body to be able to take a punch and also to give one. We confess, we’re not all that self-disciplined and we’re not all that self-aware. And so, we need Your Holy Spirit to guide us, and lead us, to shine the light of truth into the dark recesses of our hearts. So, come, Holy Spirit that we might change the rhythm and continue to become aware that opportunity to love our fellow human beings, on Your behalf and in your name, those opportunities are everywhere. Come, Jesus, and lead us we pray. In your mighty name we ask. Amen.

And as he shared his commentary, I never felt the twisting of Scripture that wasn’t being spoken over me in other parts of my life. The Daily Audio Bible became my lifeline and it helped me be able to stand and say “nope, that is not how God sees me, He loves me and created me perfectly”. And as I listen to the praise and prayer requests and prayed along, I often cried, sensing, that although the prayer being offered was for someone else, God meant it for me as well. So, thank you, Hands to Heaven, for praying for me, one of the silent ones. I’m silent no longer and I pray that others like me will know that God absolutely cherishes them and adores them and is holding them beneath his wings, just as He has been holding me.

Mainstream comics were a bit of a wasteland in 1991. Howard Mackie was resurrecting Ghost Rider and starting his path of destruction at Marvel Comics; a period that would later cause them much disrepair. Over in Amazing Spider-Man, Carnage, Venom’s more homicidal and of-the-times counterpart would debut, setting the stage for a bunch of stories no one ever needed to read anyway. On the opposite side of failure, the biggest comic of all time (if you buy into that sort of declaration, or read the sales charts) shipped: X-Men #1, by Chris Claremont and Jim Lee, establishing the tone and tempo that readers would see rehashed, reheated, and overcooked through the next thirty years. The previous paragraph may seem like it’s picking on Marvel. It is, to an extent, but DC wasn’t even publishing anything worth a note here. Do you need to know about the first appearance of Abbatoir? If you do, Bing it. How about Armageddon 2001? There’s probably an out-of-print omnibus you can find on eBay. On the independents, the tide was changing, and cartooning was having its day again. The debuts of Frank, Palookaville, Rubber Blanket, and Bone (Jim Woodring, Seth, David Mazzucchelli, and Jeff Smith, respectively) were coins in the wishing well of comics: “Let’s throw these in, see what happens...” Those coins would later become invaluable to the fabric of comics. One little wave in the well was Challengers of the Unknown Must Die. In 1991, the volume of comics, in the literal and figurative, was too loud and too expansive to sell a book like Challengers (hereafter referred to as CotU). The Direct Market is designed to sell Batman, the X-Men, and just about nothing else. CotU landed with little fanfare, selling on the strength of a Brian Bolland cover on the debut, and force of pure nostalgia. This is not to sell CotU as a high benchmark for comics. There are a ton of truly amazing things happening within the pages. The majority of these are executed by Tim Sale, who made his mainstream debut, and set his first collaboration with Jeph Loeb into motion. Reading CotU in 2022 is an interesting exercise. Does it hold up? Fantastically. Does it present any new ideas? Not necessarily. It finds itself firmly in the tropes of 1980s - 1990s superhero deconstruction, spurred on by the likes of, most importantly, Watchmen. Characters die in the first issue, characters debut in the first issue, and most importantly, Tim Sale does things on the page that would, today, win him incredible numbers of awards and admiration. It is a crying shame that Tim Sale’s work on CotU is overlooked in favor of his Marvel work or the Batman issues. Is it lesser from a script perspective? That could be argued. On Sale’s end, this is a stunningly mature, learned work that executes a lot of ideas in small space; it reads like a good Grant Morrison comic, in a period where Grant Morrison tended a bit darker. The upward moments, the moments of optimism, are understated in Loeb’s script, but delivered in full swing by Sale. As with any comic: this is an artist’s medium; Tim Sale does things on the page in CotU, in the first issue alone, that you will not see replicated in any superhero comic, and will leave you breathless. He executes truly stunning violence with moments of pathos; he balances, deftly, Loeb’s wordy script, with a master’s hand at how much space to leave on the page, where (and most importantly, how) to show off, and when to state business at quiet. The big moments soar, the violence lands like an axe, and we haven’t even gotten to the page layouts. If you publish CotU in 2022, it wins awards for its page layouts alone. In the first issue, we see some of the pencil-and-ink acrobatics Tim Sale would later be a comics-household name for. Pages flip without our hands on them; layouts literally shatter on the page; grids bleed with personality and shine. This is a case where, like American Flagg!, if it had a more robust print run, everyone would’ve been put under its influence. Flagg!, in its time, had the critics. CotU did not. As such, it dies a death to the ravages of age, but remains timeless on a re-read. Sale’s choice to let blood drip down panels into the bottom of the page borders, making sustained images absolutely defy the idiotic arguments that these “shots” are “lazy” (and mind you, this is 1991), and casually chipping parts off of pages, or twisting images into the likes of the aforementioned wishing well waves. CotU is a dazzling and overlooked work of comics genius. It’s easy to call that a 50/50 effort on the parts of Mssrs. Loeb and Sale, but the sharp readers know this: it’s an artist’s medium. Always has been, always will be.

Loser On The Ropes Brian Dunne (Kill Rock Stars) (released in April 2023)

On May 10 I posted a vinyl pressing of this album. I have grown infatuated with this record and decided I needed it on my iPod (the LP did not come with a download code) so I could blast it from my car. The layout is a bit different and I banked on that. I knew there was no way the lyrics would be on the back of the CD as is the case with the LP version and I hoped for a booklet with the lyrics. Those lyrics printed on the back of the LP jacket are small print and with the shrinkwrap sometimes they are difficult to follow (as Dylan said, 'I've got new eyes, everything looks far away') and Dunne can cram a lot of words into his lyrics (that's not a complaint). Above are the cover, the gatefold and the back of the digipak.

welcome to the first issue of schmear the queer. a new queer-n-jewish fanzine. perhaps journal, but definitely not a magazine. what’s the difference? this endeavor is committed to including as wide a variety of voices and visions as possible, with no regard whatsoever for target marketing, advertising revenue or focus groups. if you appreciate these priorities and like what you see here, then please spread the word and better yet, submit something to the next issue. i decided to put this together a couple years ago when i was meeting other jewish activist & artist types and we would kibbitz about how many wonderful queer jews we all knew and how there should be outlets for us: potlucks, film festivals, ‘zines and the like. so, here’s something, and i hope you like it. issue #2 is going to be the “superhero/heroine” issue. as all folks who do ‘zines say: i hope to put out 3 or 4 issues per year, but it’s largely up to you> (sic) the more interest there is, the more issues will materialize.

i'd like to think that some wide conceptions of what is queer and/or jewish were used to put this thing together. obviously Jewishness is cultural, religious, aesthetic and gastrointestinal. and queerness is definitely related to sexuality, but I also think to being an outsider. the call for submissions stated “queer-n-jewish are how you define them”, and I hope that future issues continue to explore the overlaps, similarities, and differences.

the title of this ‘zine comes from my childhood, a grade school experience at edward j. dekeyser elementary school in sterling heights, michigan. the version of dodge ball that was played during recess where there were no boundaries and people could get as close to you as possible and hit you with that awful red ball [overinflated, of course] was called ‘smear the queer’…guess who got smeared?

this issue is dedicated to three women whose lives ended much too soon: my mother, elsie rachelle miller berry; my nana, clare jane abrahams miller pecis; and my cousin rachelle [shellie] ethel kasoff leitson.

special thanks to all the contributors, and all who contributed. to jesse sanford for office access, all who helped design pages, may height for the cover, all of the readers who have given so generously of their time. my heartfelt appreciation to brian kay, who has assisted me along the way with editing suggestions, and his usual candor, verve, wit and wisdom.

La Vie De Fête Season 1 Episode 3: The Coroner

The coroner walked into the dirty examination room. It was your average suspected homicide case: a body found in a pool of blood. That was classic and expected. He reached over for his needle, but it was gone.

Instead, standing quietly behind the door he entered, there was a man wearing an orange mask over his face stitched from reused prison jumpsuits, an orange cape, and an orange prison jumpsuit. The coroner watched the orange man wander around the room, look down disappointedly at the dead body, and walk towards him. Before the coroner could reach his death, he blacked out. The next thing he knew, he was being rushed out of the hospital by doctors and doctors, and police officers were evacuating the building. He tried to get up from the stretcher and see what was going on, but it was no use.

The medics had already injected the anesthesia, which was bound to kick in before he could reach the next closest ER. There were cops running in and out of the hospital. He could overhear them panicking over missing patients, IV bags, et cetera. He counted every building he passed by in his head, from Fred’s Chicken to Brockhampt and Courtney Law Firm, that was seven blocks. So, twenty buildings down would be Eastern Wayne Medical, and a few buildings down was a bar. He was expecting high quality medical care from Eastern Wayne.

After all, their name carried a sense of legitimacy and prestige. The coroner knew he wouldn’t be out of his right mind to expect hospitable staff and good food—but the ambulance stopped. There was a street fight happening. He could see it while hooked up to an IV bag in the rear view mirror. The orange man and a spy clad in black, with the dim blue street lights reflecting on his shiny silver jacket, were beating each other down in the middle of the road. The ambulance took a sharp right turn.

Instead of heading to EWM, the ambulance veered off the road, pulling into a dark, unknown alleyway only lit by the red street lamps. The emergency responder sitting by the coroner unhooked the IV bag, put a second shot of anesthesia beneath his skin, and hauled him out of the ambulance. He couldn’t believe this man was still conscious, even after two doses of Amprethumanol. Amprethumanol earned its nickname in the world of underground meds: the “hornet’s concoction.”

But the hornet’s concoction didn’t work on the coroner. He didn’t feel a tinge of drowsiness as the doctors laid him in the comfy hospital bed. Whatever was keeping him awake, the doctors and doctors knew this wasn’t his first time being here. Call it deja vu, or call it unfortunate happenstance, but the man had been here before.

He was familiar with the layout of the room, and was able to get up, totter over to the mini fridge, grab himself a can of cola, and return to his hospital bed without triggering the alarm. Whatever happened to this coroner, it hardened him. Then a doctor walked in. The young man wore medical scrubs, an N-95 mask protecting his identity, and a stethoscope loosely around his neck like a cape.

The young man didn’t care to hear that story, of course. He was here to give the coroner a check up before letting him back out. But first, the coroner had some questions. “Please state your name, gender, age, birthday, home address, any current and/or previous occupations you may have, and the names and ages of all of your living relatives.”

The coroner thought for a whole minute. He was hesitating to reveal his personal information without prior notice. “Do I really have to tell you all of this? Where am I?”

“Your name is Brian Howard. Your gender is male, and you are fifty turning fifty one in exactly a week. You live at 79732 Eastward Lane; Lepura, Graville with your sister Annalise, 62. Your previous jobs include plumbing, construction, and reading law at Brockhampt and Courtney.”

“H—how do you know that about me?” The coroner, Brian, was deceived and hoodwinked. There wasn’t a remedy in any hospital, in any medical facility or treatment center for the terrible headache he experienced there. He writhed in pain on the floor, as the doctor cast his shadow over his squirming body. His stomach stirred from the revelation, the pained coroner belched onto the tiled linoleum floor.

The murky green sky tinted the room in green, marshy hues. There was a group of distracted doctors freestyling in the next room. Whistling Blue Hospital was incognizant of the predicament that just walked through security carrying a five millimeter handgun. Power went out in a few rooms.

Then the whole hospital lost power. The only light that didn’t get power from the hospital’s electric grid was the doctor’s battery-run flashlight. But the doctor seemed resistant to the idea of surrendering his chances of making it out of the hospital without holes in his stomach. Brian knew that his only shot at having the flashlight—which was losing power fast—on hand was to wrestle it from the doctor before the man shooting up fugitives with a handgun got to them.

“Hand it over,” said the coroner. “Nobody has to get hurt.”

“No!” the nurse bellowed as he tried to make a run for it, slamming the door wide open and bolting down the hall. Brian followed him, pulled out his own handgun, and shot him point-blank in the back of the skull. Grossly enough, the doctor could hear and feel the dense slush that was the stuff inside his head sloshing around as he died.

“I swear, I had nothing to do with this,” Brian Howard said, looking the slim, tall man in the eye. “This was all a big mistake, and if you think it was me, you’re wrong, okay?”

Joran said, “I know you didn’t mean to cause any of this. There’s been rumors out on the dark web that The Rapanu and The Manongs were engaged in some sort of smuggling and organ trafficking operation, and I came here looking for answers… before I got beaten up by Justin Williams wearing something that could’ve belonged to a prisoner in a beauty competition. The place seems clean, though.”
