"Jasper Man Is Sentenced," Kingston Whig-Standard. July 7, 1943. Page 3.
----
Changing his plea to one of guilty on each of eight charges of committing gross indecency, Carl Beamish, aged 41, of Jasper, who was arrested June 19 was sentenced to three years in Kingston Penitentiary and ordered given 10 strokes of the strap when he appeared before Magistrate Wright in Brockville court yesterday morning. He was sentenced to three years on each of the charges the sentences to run concurrently. He had pleaded not guilty at previous appearances in court.
A charge of selling unlawful articles was also brought against the man. He entered a plea of guilty to this offence and was given another two years concurrent sentence by the magistrate. Confiscation of the goods was ordered by the court.
Hon. H. A. Stewart, K.C., appearing for the accused, presented an appeal for leniency and handed to the magistrate a petition signed by numerous residents of the Jasper district. Crown Attorney H. Atkinson moved for a penitentiary sentence when Provincial Constable Alex MacLeod had concluded his evidence. His attitude was that juveniles 'should be protected' and the magistrate, feeling definite that the man was a menace to the morality of juveniles, as an example and warning to others who might be so inclined, felt a severe penalty was warranted. Beamish left the court room in a broken condition, supported by a relative.
[AL: Beamish, according to his police and prison records, was convicted of gross indecency, a deliberately vague charge in the Criminal Code mostly used to prosecute gay men engaged in sexual activity, and with providing contraceptives for sale - not condoms but likely some kind of abortificant. He was a storekeeper in the small town of Jasper outside of Brockville, and so was likely selling or providing information on safe sex and pornography, almost certainly to younger people. He had no previous criminal record and was single and 41 - it's possible Beamish was gay himself, but this is hard to figure without digging even deeper into court transcripts. He was convict #7369 at Kingston Penitentiary, and worked at the change room. He was whipped twice in 1943 and 1944 as part of his sentence. A model prisoner, he was transferred to the low security Collin's Bay Penitentiary in November 1944, and paroled in mid-1945.]

FROM PRESS RELEASE
Led by 29-year old fast-rising piano star NICK MACLEAN -- an 8x Global Music Award winner and one of the most in-demand young jazz piano players in Toronto -- this contemplative yet thrilling quartet delivers jazz between the two poles of thoughtful introspection and powerhouse conveyance, taking influences from Herbie Hancock's primordial 1960's Blue Note era recordings. Maclean's quartet heavily features one of Canada's most provocative improvising trumpet players -- BROWNMAN ALI -- an internationally acclaimed, multi-award winning jazz iconoclast who has been heralded as "Canada's preeminent jazz trumpet player" by New York City's Village Voice and is best known globally as the last trumpet player to play in the legendary jazz-hip-hop group GURU's JAZZMATAZZ. For this show, Ali & Maclean stand shoulder-to-shoulder with 2 of Canada's top-tier 20-somethings: BEN DUFF on upright bass, and JACOB WUTZKE on drums as the group prepares to record their second studio album - a hotly anticipated follow up of their decorated debut release RITES OF ASCENSION (2017, Browntasauras Records).
A big thanks to the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts for their support in our upcoming recording sessions!

The Eclipse, April 8, 2:12 pm
Kathy said we should see the eclipse. She said: It happens once in a lifetime; the next one will come in forty years. And it is fantastic! The news media estimated a million people would visit Niagara Falls to watch the eclipse; hotels tripled their room rates there. After reading about how to watch the eclipse, Kathy ordered appropriate sunglasses from Amazon, and…

Goin' Up to the Spirit in the Sky? Linda Knight Seccaspina
In February of 1910 The Montreal Star reported that the Eastern Townships sky contained a mystery. If all reports were accurate the stories raised great talk in the small towns and a lot of fear. The information that was gossiped about was all about a mysterious traveller through space. It appeared to be a somewhat indescribable flying machine which came from out of nowhere and seemed to return…

09/30/22 - Brockville, ON - WHO KNEW? - Had a nice quiet night parked at the local Walmart complete with wi-fi from the Home Depot next store. Not bad for free overnight parking. During our morning walk, this outdoor sculpture stood out and made for a nice pic. Did some research on it and found out that it is called 'Ascension' and is meant to symbolize 'moving up' as it is on the grounds of a technical college which provides the training for its students to do just that. It is also of significance to the diving community as this is the hand signal to surface. This all comes together when you find out that this fiberglass version is a replica of the original cement sculpture which can be found 30 ft. underwater at nearby Centeen Park, home of Canada's first under water sculpture park. Wow! Who knew?

Three in Mayoralty Races In Ottawa And Woodstock
---
TORONTO, Dec. 5. - Residents of numerous cities, towns and villages and townships of Ontario go to the polls today to elect new municipal councils for the year 1933. Lower taxes, rigid economy and balanced budgets have been popular planks, upon which the multitude of candidates have appealed to the electorate. The exceptionally large number of nominees this year has created unusual interest and new marks in polling are expected to be registered.
In the majority of the larger cities the mayoralty contest has been waged between two aspirants. Ottawa, Windsor and Woodstock have three seeking the chief magistrate's chair. Hamilton, Chatham, Kingston, Kitchener, Galt and St. Thomas will see the vote divided among two for this honor.
Brockville, believing that money that might be spent on elections could be better used for unemployment relief, returned the entire municipal slate by acclamation with Fred Wolthausen as mayor. Stratford has accorded C. I. Graff another term as mayor by acclamation.
