I want to try this too - B.Barnes x reader
Summary:Bucky might be ready for a new relationship...
TW: none.. maybe a little insecurity but apart from that just lots and lots of fluff :)
Bucky’s insomnia often left him wandering the streets at strange hours of the night. On more occasions that he cared to admit to, he had ended up at a 24hour diner, one which obnoxious neon lights and awful coffee. But it was warm and the waiters were nice enough to let him sit without ever bothering him too much. He’d become somewhat of a regular and a few of the waiters knew him by name, James of course, but one, just one knew him as Bucky.
He found himself walking the path he had strolled down far too often once again, it was barely four and the moon cast a threatening shadow in front of Bucky’s feet . The cool air forced his jacket to be pulled just a little tighter around his warm body, despite the serum pumping through his veins reacting to the cold had become a habit, a way to make himself seem a little more normal. The bright neon sign loomed in front of him, taking a deep breath he stepped inside.
The smell of fresh brewed coffee burnt through his nose, a couple sat in one of the window booths nursing two large burgers, the smell of alcohol told Bucky exactly what they were doing. The rest of the diner was empty, just how Bucky liked it. He took a seat in a corner booth and tugged his jacket off,
“How can I help—” The waitress started “Bucky” She grinned once she realised who had sat down
“Hey Y/N” He said quietly “Coffee and cake today? Or are you going with something different, Phil just made a brand new batch of pancakes if you’re interested?” She asked
“Coffee please doll, sure I’ll take the pancakes too. May as well” He chuckled, Y/N gave him a nod and bounded off towards the kitchen.
Bucky picked at the gloves on his hands, he hadn’t dared to take them off just yet but they were beginning to get on his nerves. But Y/N was one of the only people who treated him like he was normal, he didn’t want to ruin that, not just yet.
“So Bucky, what was it this time?” Y/N said returning with two mugs full of coffee, she took a seat on the opposite side of the booth
“The usual” He replied taking a sip of coffee
“Nightmares again? I thought when you didn’t come last week that they’d stopped”
“I was away” Bucky said simply “on, uh business”
“How was it?” She asked, Bucky began to relax a little
“It was tough, had a lot of stuff to do” He said with a sigh,
“Hydra?” She asked
“What?” Bucky said feeling like deer in headlights
“Sorry, I just thought that” Y/N bit her lip “I should’t have said anything, I’m sorry” She said quickly standing “I’ll check on those pancakes for you”
Bucky watched as Y/N hurried away from his table, not in fear as he had pictured but with shame.
Y/N soon returned with a plate of pancakes, which she placed in front of Bucky with a tight lipped smile.
“I’ll be behind the counter if you need anything else” She said
“Y/N” Bucky said,
“It’s fine, you don’t need to say anything”
“Y/N” Bucky repeated grabbing her wrist softly, stopped her from making her escape
“Bucky please”
“Sit with me? Please?” Bucky asked,
Y/N took her seat across from Bucky once more.
“How did you know?”
“I’m kinda a news nerd, I followed the Winter Solider story when you were on the run, and then your pardon and working with Captain America and the Flag Smashers and then when you walked in here I didn’t want to make you nervous so I just pretended” Y/N mumbled quickly
“You knew all this time?” He asked
“I’m sorry”
“You never shied away from me” Bucky said in disbelief
“I didn’t need to, the man who was the winter solider isn’t you. I’ve never once even thought you were close to him. You were brainwashed Bucky” Y/N said Bucky took a sip of coffee, needing something to stop himself from running away from Y/N, “Why don’t you take the gloves off?” She asked
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable” He said gently
Y/N reached across the table slowly, taking one of Bucky’s hands in hers and tugged at the leather material, until it was laying flat on the table. He fingers wrapped around the metal hand gently, she then reached across and took the other glove off, intertwining her other hand with his flesh one.
“I’ve never been uncomfortable with you Bucky” She admitted “You’re the highlight of my night”
“Waitress could we get some more coffee?” The couple from the window booth called,
“I’ll be right back Bucky” She said gently giving his hands a squeeze.
Bucky watched in disbelief as Y/N poured the couple some more coffee, then returning back to Bucky instantly.
“Y/N?” Bucky whispered
“Yeah?” She replied
“I used to be better at all this” Bucky admitted quietly
“Better at what Bucky?”
“Talking to pretty girls” Bucky said with a laugh
“You’ve only ever seen me in the dark Bucky, I might turn into a frog when sunlight hits” She said with a grin
“I seriously doubt that doll” Bucky said taking Y/N’s hands in his “Would you let me take you out? I know that dancing isn’t the normal anymore, but maybe a coffee, not poured by you?”
“I’d like that Bucky”
“I’m going to need time, to get used to it all again. But I want to try this”
“I want to try this too” Y/N said

“Bucky, we’re gonna be late!” You called from your perch on the couch. You finally secured the bracelet you’d been struggling with for five minutes when a loud groan answered from behind the cracked bathroom door, followed by a painful, “Goddamnit!”
You jumped as Bucky’s voice shook his apartment. Cautiously, you rose from the couch and moved to the door, muttered cursing and muffled thuds coming from behind it, freezing when Bucky called your name before you could grab the door handle.
“Uh, yeah, Buck?” You swallowed, nervous, thinking of ways to navigate his tone. You’d never heard him talk like this before. Ever.
Bucky cursed again. “Gah–fuck me– could you go ‘n get Sam?” The icy undertones of his request sent a chill down your spine.
“Wh– Buck, we gotta get going, why would you want–”
“Now, Honey.”
His demand came stronger than you expected, sending you reeling back from the door. You blinked. He sighed immediately after he checked himself, frustrated, uttering another curse under his breath before trying again.
“Now, Honey, please?” His voice softened, granted there was still an edge to it. You paused, even more confused as to why he wanted Sam, of all people, right this fucking second. The gala was starting in twenty minutes and you were already running behind.
“I– Yes.”
A quiet ‘thank you’ followed you out into the hallway as you made a bee-line for Sam’s quarters. Heel clicks echoed off the tile floor, bouncing off the walls as you quickened your pace, stopping abruptly at Sam’s quarters. You pounded on the door, calling out his name. No response.
“Sam Wilson, get out here, damnit!” You yelled, fists readied for another swing at the door. Just before making contact, the door flew open, revealing one Sam Wilson with a brow cocked and busy hands looping a wine-red tie around his popped collar.
“Damn, Honeysuckle, didn’t know you were capable of using such language,” he tisked. You rolled your eyes.
“Sam, Bucky needs you,” you spat out. Sam paused, brow dropping while a dismissive smirk plastered his face. He didn’t believe you. And, honestly, who would?
Sam scoffs a laugh. “Why? Does he need help oiling his gears?”
He stifled a chuckle but you weren’t in any mood to laugh. You instead lunged, yanking him out into the hallway with you, slamming the door shut. He instantly dropped the act.
“Will you just shut the fuck up and come with me?” You demanded through gritted teeth. For all you knew, Bucky could be suffering from another panic attack. Alone. The mere thought of that made your heart hammer harder. And if being late and Sam’s thick skull hadn’t already pissed you off, that sure as hell did.
“Okay, alright, I’m comin’.” Sam nodded, following you down the hallway, still fiddling with his tie.
Tumblr media
“He’s in there,” you said, pointing to the bathroom door as the two of you entered Bucky’s quarters. Sam led the way, gently knocking on the door.
“Bucky? It’s me, can I come in?”
Not a word was uttered as the door cracked open slowly and a metal-plated arm jutted out, yanking Sam into the bathroom before quickly slamming it closed. You flinched, the small living room settling into silence as you stood outside the bathroom, hands fidgeting with the glittery fabric of your dress. It felt like ages of nothing but incoherent, hushed conversation coming from the other side of the door. At your wit’s end, you were about to yell break the door down yourself when Sam started cackling at the top of his lungs.
Now you were really confused.
“Honey!” He managed to call between howls. “Get in here!”
You hesitated. Gripping the handle, you cautiously pushed the door open to a scene that was the last thing you could have possibly imagined.
Sam stood by the sink, bent over in stitches while tears brimmed his eyes in futile attempts at trying– and failing– to stop laughing. His suit jacket wrinkled at the waist as he jutted an arm out from his stomach, bracing himself on the countertop.
“Sam what the fuck–!” you began to scold him, turning your head to Bucky.
Your jaw dropped.
The hulking ex-hitman stood against the opposite wall with his head bent to the floor, loose strands of hair falling from his slicked-back ponytail. His arms crossed over his chest, failing to cover the source of Sam’s outburst: his bright pink dress shirt. And it wasn’t like a typical white-shirt-got-in-with-the-reds-type pink. No, his shirt was as if a flamingo colored itself with a highlighter and then rolled in cotton candy. Bucky’s face was close to matching the hue perfectly as Sam continued to holler over the bathroom sink.
“Oh! Oh, Bucky,” you cooed, voice wavering as you bit back a smile. You stepped toward him, placing your hands on his sulking shoulders. He dared not to look up from his staring contest with the floor as his face became even more flushed at your touch.
“Hey, Buck,” you coaxed as you gently lifted his chin with a finger, “look at me will ya?”
He sighed, relenting, finally meeting your stare. Baby blues beamed right through you as he held your gaze with sad, puppy-dog eyes you couldn’t resist looking away from.
“How did this even happen?” You questioned him, and Sam, looking between them.
“I asked Sam for help doing my own laundry,” Bucky groaned, “and he told me to just throw everything in. Even the reds ‘n whites.”
“Sam!” You whipped around, shooting daggers as your grip tightened on Bucky’s shoulders.
“What? He asked, I helped!” he defended. “Didn’t think he’d actually take me seriously!”  Sam wiped away a tear as he caught his breath, smoothing out his suit. Utterly speechless at the minimal amount of brain cells Sam apparently possessed, and empathetic to Bucky’s situation and sweet, sweet naivety, you sighed as thoughts raced to think of ways to remedy the situation so you all could at least show up by the end of cocktail hour because you really fucking needed a drink.
You looked to Bucky, chewing your lip, searching his features for an answer. Then it hit you.
“Wait here,” you ordered, “both of you.” You pointed to Sam as you made way to the elevator in the hallway as fast as your heels could carry you. Once on your floor, you sprinted into your apartment, hurrying to your closet in search of the dress you remembered immediately dismissing when Wanda was helping you choose what to wear for that night. Something you’d never be caught wearing ever, especially at such a public event. With cameras. And strangers.
Do it for Bucky, do it for Bucky, do it for Bucky.
You stripped your old dress off, leaving it on the floor of your closet as you wiggled yourself into the 'eye sore of the century’– your words, in contrast to Wanda’s literal heart eyes when you’d tried it on– and prayed to anything holy that this would make Bucky feel better.
You raced out the door and back into the elevator, hoping F.R.I.D.A.Y. was the only one to see you. So far.
Tumblr media
“Man, hey,” Sam nodded to Bucky, who still refused to look him in the eye. Sam rolled his eyes, heart filling with just a tad bit of guilt for messing with him.
“Buck–”
“Don’t call me Buck.”
“Okay, you know what? I’m sorry. There, ya happy?”
Bucky grunted in response, shifting his weight as he continued to analyze the tiled flooring.
“Bucky, c’mon, I–” Sam stopped mid-sentence, interrupted as the bathroom door whipped open, revealing you standing in the threshold. Your arms crossed over your chest holding a black suit jacket. A bubblegum pink midi dress complete with a multitude of sequins hugged you as you waited for Bucky to notice. Sam sure as hell did.
“Bucky– Honey– Woah.” Sam straightened, adjusting his tie and buttoning his jacket.
Sam’s reaction snapped Bucky out of his trance. His eyes skimmed from the floor to your heels, eyes growing wider and wider as he made his way up to meet your sharp gaze. Without hesitation, you cocked a hip and threw the jacket at him. He caught it, confused, bewildered, utterly mesmerized. Still clueless, however, he looked down at it then back at you. If he didn’t know any better, he’d be drooling.
“C’mon Buck, get dressed or we won’t make it in time for cocktail hour,” you huffed, tapping at an imaginary wristwatch.
Bucky gulped. A deer in headlights.
Out of the corner of your eye, you caught sight of the biggest grin breaking out on Sam’s face. Without another word, he placed a quick peck on your cheek and snuck past you, closing the door. Finally, Bucky seemed to snap back to reality and did as you asked. He swung the jacket over his broad shoulders, adjusting the cuffs and moving to the mirror. You stepped behind him, observing him over his shoulder as he adjusted his tie.
“You didn’t have to do this, ya know,” he muttered, his small smirk quickly growing across his lips.
“Yes, I did,” you replied, grabbing his waist and spinning him towards you. Manicured fingers reached for his collar, adjusting it as you locked eyes with him. You offered a soft, genuine smile as you tucked a loose lock of hair behind his ear. He returned with one of his own, a free hand finding its way to your waist while your own slid down to stay on his cheek. Your thumb softly stroked his cheek, smooth from when he shaved that morning. In that moment it was as if you were pulling each other closer and closer with each passing second, the air magnetizing as hands lingered for seconds longer than you both were used to.
In this light, something inside of you screams at how handsome he is.
You ignore it, though, instead suddenly remembering you both had a gala to get to.“Now, let’s go,” you said, dragging him out of his apartment. “I need a damn drink.”

Bucky Barnes was your best friend. Maybe you might not be his. But how exactly does one compete with Steve Rogers?
Anyway, that was how you felt. Bucky didn't open up to many people, and you felt honored to be included amongst his few trusted individuals. It had been a year ago that you became part of the Avengers initiative. It hadn't taken you long to be accepted as part of the team, become everyone's favorite confidante, in fact.
There was something about you that people trusted, they would open up to you in a way that they didn't to anyone else. Your charms had even managed to weave their magic over one grumpy super soldier. And he was by far your favorite follower.
It had taken a few weeks before he had given in to your spell, finally admitting his love of pancakes to you during one of your midnight snack quests. It was the first piece of personal information he had shared with you and you always remembered it. In fact you'd joined him for a midnight pancake treat on many occasions since that day.
The way you smiled at him lit up his world. Bucky was drawn to it like a moth to a flame. He wasn’t the only one. Objectively, people wouldn’t have described you as the most beautiful person or the hottest, but there was something about you that shone, the expressiveness of your eyes, the kindness in your heart and the unknown bounds of your acceptance of others that drew people to you. Your personality was all anyone saw once they spoke to you and it was stunning.
There were times though, when it all became too much for you, listening to people's problems got a little overwhelming. It was these times that you sought out the company of people you trusted, the people who really saw you for who you were, a slightly nerdy introvert. The list was small; it included Natasha Romanoff, Steve Rogers and your favorite, James Barnes.
There was something about the solitary supersoldier that intrigued you. He didn't spill his problems to you like others did, you'd had to work very hard at gaining his trust but once you had, you felt like you'd discovered a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Bucky had an unexpected depth and his interests were surprisingly in tune with yours. Steve always seemed to be lost in documentaries when you sat down for down time with him and Nat found joy from horror movies which were far from your taste in cinematography. But Bucky was happy to watch a fantasy or science fiction film with you any time, dawn or dusk.
Bucky enjoyed your interests, but it was your company he enjoyed more. You made him feel comfortable, you didn't ask him intrusive questions, you forgave his selective mutism if he was having a bad day, making no irritating attempts to make him feel happier or better as the other members of the team were so apt to do. No, you let him be himself, in fact, you almost seemed to like his sullen silences.
What he liked the most was that you seemed to be a different person when he was around. You seemed more relaxed, the radiant sunshine demeanor that you exuded became muted, as though you knew that he needed a dimmer switch to help him cope. His scowls were far less ferocious when you were around but woe befell anyone who interrupted or invaded his time with you, his face would become dark and his mood would often turn sour. The only person who he would gracefully accept as an outsider to your pair was Steve. In short, Bucky Barnes was in love with you. Not that he would ever let it show.
The only person who could see Bucky’s feelings for you was Steve. He would smile in a knowing way when he walked in on the two of you laughing together, sharing a plate of nachos. He knew from the way you curled up at Bucky’s side that you harbored similar feelings. The only difference for you is that you had convinced yourself that Bucky couldn’t possibly feel the same way. Friendship was one thing, but you couldn’t imagine that he would want anything more than that. One day, when you had seen a female agent flirting with Bucky and he had smiled back, turned on the 1940’s charm that he apparently was famous for, that was the day you’d decided to put your feelings aside and move on with your life.
It was that decision that led to your current situation. A new dress and fancy heels later, you trotted to the common living area to get your bestie’s opinion. Your makeup was perfect, highlighting your prominent features and Bucky thought you looked radiant as you paraded your dress in front of him, seeking his approval. Naturally, you had it, you always had his approval, it didn’t matter what you were wearing.
“Where are you going all dolled up like that?” Bucky looked you up and down, admiring the view.
“Sidney and I are going out.”
“Oh, that sounds fun. You’ve been hanging out with her a lot. It’s nice that you’re getting along with the other agents too,” he smiled. Bucky was always encouraging of you, even if he would have preferred to keep you all to himself.
You laughed. Bucky usually reveled in the sound, but today he would be wishing he hadn’t heard it at all.
“Bucky!” you swatted his arm playfully. “Sidney is a guy. The guy I’m dating. I’ve told you about this.”
“Yeah, Buck, I did.” You pouted, “were you just pretending to listen?”
“What? No you didn’t.”
“Of course not, you said you were going to minigolf. You were so happy because you won.” Bucky smiled slightly at the memory. How you’d come home with red cheeks from the cold and the joy of winning at minigolf.
“That was our fourth date.”
Bucky was quiet for a moment. “Are you dating a woman?” he asked quietly.
“No, Buck. I mean I have, but Sidney isn’t one.”
“Oh,” Bucky mumbled, processing the information you'd given him.
Your sexual history didn't bother him, it was your present that did. Suddenly Bucky didn't want to look at you. Knowing you'd be spending your time with another man looking the way you did. He hated the thought. He wanted you to dress up for him that way, he wanted to be the one who ripped that pretty little dress off your body, he wanted to be the one who got to kiss you, to touch you, to claim every single part of you. But instead he got to watch another man sweep you off your feet.
“Well I better finish getting ready.”
You gasped as Bucky stood up suddenly.
“You're unbelievable,” he muttered, a darkness descending across his handsome features.
“What's that supposed to mean?” you asked, angrily.
“Nothing. Go have fun on your date.” Bucky stormed out without a backward glance.
He left you in the living room feeling lost and alone. Tears sprung into your eyes and your enthusiasm for your night out fizzled out completely. You couldn't understand his behavior, the sergeant had always treated you so well. Had you done something to upset him?
The sadness you felt was suddenly overcome with anger. Whatever it was that had upset him, you didn't deserve the attitude he was displaying towards you. In fact, you were going to tell him just that. But first, you picked your phone to make a call.
“Hey Sidney? … Yeah about that. I'm sorry Sidney. I know you went to a lot of trouble organizing tonight. I was really looking forward to it. But something’s come up here. I can't get out of it.”
You sighed, hanging up the phone. Sidney had been understanding, waving off your apology with such grace. On paper, he was the perfect partner for you, he was handsome, he shared so many of your interests and he accepted you for who you were. But you didn't feel butterflies when you thought of him, your face didn't light up when you spoke about him, he didn't fill you with warmth the way Bucky did.
Outrage still bubbled under the surface as you put your phone back on the dressing table in your room, so you decided to address the person who had caused the issue. You marched down the corridor, your stiletto heels clacking angrily as you made your way to Bucky’s room. As you pounded on the door, it flew open just in time for you to fling your hands up protectively as an object hit the wall beside your head.
Bucky’s eyes went wide as he saw the shock on your face. He had been pacing up and down his room and caught sight of a photo of the two of you smiling at each other. He couldn’t bear to see it anymore, to look at you when you didn’t look back at him that way. He had grabbed the photograph, letting it fly away from him in an attempt to extinguish the anguish he felt.
“Wow, do you hate me that much?” you asked. Your anger evaporated as quickly as it had arrived.
Bucky stood, speechless, as you bent down and picked up the smashed photo frame.
“Be careful,” Bucky warned you, as your shoe crushed a piece of broken glass.
“I know how to take care of myself.”
“And going out with some random man who knows nothing about you is what? … safe?”
“Why do you even care, Bucky?”
“You're my friend, you think I want you to get hurt?”
“What makes you think that I need that from you? I mean, if this is what you think of our friendship.” You held up the broken picture frame as a reference to your comment. A single tear slipped down your cheek.
Bucky had the decency to look ashamed of himself, at least that is how you interpreted the look on his face. What you didn't see was the guilt that bubbled under the surface, the devastation at the thought of losing you to someone else.
“He isn't good enough for you.”
You scoffed. “You don't even know him.”
“I don't need to.”
He approached you slowly and stopped right in front of you. If you hadn't spent months getting to know him, you'd be afraid of him, the way his vibranium fist clenched and unclenched repeatedly. But you knew it was a nervous tic of his, not a threatening one.
Bucky bent down and started picking up the shards of glass, then with a low voice, he mumbled something.
“You deserve to be with someone who knows how special you are.”
Had you heard him correctly?
You crouched down to help him with the cleaning.
“Leave that, I'll do it.”
“Bucky…” You picked up a small piece of glass between your fingers. “What do you mean?”
“You'll hurt yourself.” He took the glass from you.
You wrapped your hand around his wrist. “Bucky,” you whispered.
But Bucky couldn't look at you, that voice inside his brain that blamed himself for the actions of the Winter Soldier was the same one that often told him that he wasn't good enough for you. How could anyone as bright as you care for someone who held such darkness inside of him? He stood up, hiding his expression from you.
You sighed, reaching down to pick up one last piece. But you were hurt and careless and the sharp edge sliced your finger, drawing blood, making you hiss with pain.
“I told you to leave it alone!” He grabbed your wrist this time, trying to examine your wound. “This is exactly why I told you not to touch it. It won't hurt me.”
“I don't understand why you're upset.”
“This isn't deep.” He let go of your arm, walking away from you.
“What do you want from me, Bucky?”
“I don't want you to date him.”
You were surprised but you didn’t let it show on your face. “Okay.”
“Okay? Just like that?” Bucky frowned in confusion.
“Yeah.”
“No explanation needed?”
“I want you to be happy. And if this upsets you, I won't date Sidney.” You sighed, you hated that he had this power over you, that you were willing to give up a chance for your own happiness because Bucky said so. But you knew you would do anything for him, even if you ended up being single for the rest of your life. And it was all very overrated anyway, happy relationships, you didn’t know anyone who didn’t have problems with the people they had attached themselves to. Who needed a family, it was all nothing but trouble, you said to yourself.
“I don't want to lose you,” Bucky muttered.
“Bucky, you'll never lose me.” It felt like you were telling him you loved him without using the actual words. Rising up onto your toes, you pressed a soft kiss on his cheek. “I care about you, Bucky.”
Bucky brought his hand to your face, caressing your cheek with his thumb, wiping away the streak of fluid your tears had left. He leaned in towards you until you could feel his breath against your lips. You opened and closed your mouth, feeling like a goldfish because no sound would come out. The way Bucky was looking into your eyes had rendered you speechless. It almost felt like the love you felt for him was being reflected back at you. You wanted to kiss him but you couldn’t move. His nose brushed lightly against yours and then his lips were pressed against yours. It started out gentle, his mouth against yours, lips moving in tandem, until his tongue sought out yours. The taste of you seemed to ignite a deeper desire inside him because suddenly his arms were wrapped around you, pulling you closer, closer than you’d ever been to him, enveloped in his embrace as his hands roamed over your back, fingers pushing into you through the fabric of your little black dress.
You wrapped your arms tightly around Bucky's neck and as he straightened his back, you were lifted off the floor. The only way for you to support yourself was to wrap your legs around his waist, and Bucky's hands on your ass gave you the encouragement you needed to take this next step. Soon your core was rubbing against his crotch and Bucky stumbled across to the bed, laying you down with surprising tenderness. He knelt down between your splayed legs and smiled at you with an adoring gaze.
“I've wanted this for so long,” he whispered, as though a loud noise might wake him for this dream.
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Why didn't you?”
You laughed to yourself, both of you had been so afraid of losing the other that you'd missed out on the happiness you'd sought from each other.
“Do we have to talk about this right now? I want to go back to the kissing,” you pouted.
This earned you one of those rare joyous laughs from him, ones that he often saved for you. You treasured each and every one of these, they were so rare and precious. Bucky captured your protruding lower lip between his teeth, giving it a playful tug before going back to the heated lip lock you'd been engaged in earlier.
Only when he was grinding his hips into yours and moaning that a horrifying thought entered your mind.
“Bucky,” you called his name quietly.
“Mmm?” he hummed, not taking his lips off the spot on your neck that he was sucking enthusiastically.
“Buck… stop.”
There was a pop as the seal of his lips on your neck broke. “Are you okay?”
“I can't…”
“I'm sorry,” Bucky backed away, like he'd been burned.
“Buck, wait,” you reached for his hand. “I mean, I need to talk to Sidney.”
“Oh, yeah, right. Of course, you have a date.”
“Bucky, I need to break it off with him before we… I don't want to be that person. Do you understand?”
“Yeah,” Bucky sighed, sitting down beside you as you pulled the straps of your dress back over your shoulder.
“Can you give me some time to go talk to him?”
Bucky nodded, not quite trusting himself to speak lest his voice betrayed his disappointment. But you knew him well enough to read his face.
“Hey, I'll be back. I promise.” You held out your pinky for him to take.
He smiled and linked his little finger with yours. One of the things he admired most about you was your integrity. You stood up, leaning back for one more quick kiss before you walked away, only letting go of his hand once you both couldn't extend your arms any further. You stole one last look at him before closing the door.
On your way back to your room, you called Sidney, asking him to meet you, before you changed out of your dress and into more comfortable clothes. A heavy guilt settled on your chest, you knew you'd be hurting him but you knew you couldn't offer him your whole heart, not when you knew Bucky was at home waiting for you. The next hour was a difficult one for you, you did your best to be gentle and considerate of Sidney’s feelings as you let him down.
“Look Sidney, I’m really sorry about this, I didn’t mean to string you along.”
“But you’re in love with someone else.” Sidney looked at you with a sad smile.
Your eyes widened in surprise. “How do- what makes you say that?”
“It’s the way you talk about Sergeant Barnes,” he said knowingly.
“I’m sorry.” You turned your head to hide the tears threatening to escape.
“He’s a lucky man.” Sidney leant down and gave you a peck on the cheek. “I’ll see you around.”
You sighed as you made your way back home, still feeling a little deflated about what you’d just done. But a promise was a promise and you didn’t want to keep Bucky waiting. It was the thought of Bucky that stopped you dragging your feet but you made a pitstop in your room to freshen up your makeup.
Before you knew it, you were back outside Bucky’s door and you were pretty certain your heart skipped a beat as you knocked nervously. What if he had changed his mind?
There clearly wasn’t cause for concern because Bucky opened the door so fast, you wondered if he had just been standing on the other side waiting for you. He wrapped his arm around your waist and scooped you into his chest, shutting the door with the edge of his foot.
Bucky kissed you as though he hadn’t seen you in years and you melted into him with a sigh.
“You were gone too long,” he pouted. “I missed you.”
“You okay?” he asked, a tinge of concern in his voice as he ran his thumb along your jaw. “I know that wasn’t easy for you.”
He was right, it hadn’t been easy for you to break off your relationship with Sidney. You never enjoyed hurting other people. You made time for people’s problems, even when you were exhausted, always ready to lend that extra helping hand. Your generosity of spirit was another reason that Bucky admired you. It made you smile, the way he understood your feelings without you having to explain them to him.
“Yeah, I’m alright.”
Being with Bucky seemed to make your problems disappear and your feelings for him surged to the surface.
“Are you sure?” he asked, nuzzling your ear and peppering the side of your neck with tiny kisses.
“Yeah, glad to be here with you,” you hummed, enjoying the way his skin felt against yours.
“You sure you haven't got any more men stashed away that I need to know about?” he mumbled.
You pulled away slightly, just to look him directly in the eye so he knew the sincerity of your next words. “No secret stash. Only you.”
“Just me?” Bucky put his hands on cheeks, putting his fingers under your jaw to tilt your face up to look at him.
“I'm all yours, Bucky.”
You leaned up, puckering your lips for a kiss and he obliged. Locked at the mouth, he led you backwards until your heels hit the edge of the bed.
“Tell me again,” he growled, pushing his chest against you til you were falling backwards onto the mattress.
Only your fall wasn't uncontrolled, Bucky's strong hands had settled on you back and he guided your descent. You grabbed the front of his Henley in your hands and pulled him down on top of you.
“Yours,” you claimed his lips hungrily.
“That's right, mine,” his voice rasped, making you tingle with anticipation.
He pushed his hips against yours, grinning proudly as you moaned in approval.
“You like that, huh?”
You swallowed the lump in your throat as you heard his belt unbuckling, hearing a clang as it fell onto the floor. He pushed his hand under the seam of your leggings and slid it between your legs. A wanton moan left your mouth as you felt his fingers rubbing on your clothed core.
"Look at you, Doll. You're so fucking wet...and I haven't even touched you yet." Bucky’s voice was low and rumbled through you like thunder.
He wiggled his fingers under your panties and between your folds, smirking into your neck and a gasp escaped your lips. Before you knew it, your eyes were rolling back as his fingers stroked your pussy.
“Bucky,” you whined as his fingers delved deeper.
It barely registered as his vibranium fingers pulled down your leggings and joined its flesh twin on your clit. Your breathing quickened to match the pace that he was pushing his fingers into you. Every push had you uttering a quiet sigh as he caressed your walls.
“So wet,” he hummed. “I’m the only one who can touch you like this. The only one who can make you feel like this, right?”
“Only you, Bucky.”
Before you could enjoy Bucky’s fingers more, they left your body. You whimpered at the loss. His hands went to the fabric around your waist, tugging it down until it was off completely and he used his hands to open your legs further. You tried not to gawk at him as he removed his clothes, layer by layer. It wasn’t as though you hadn’t seen Bucky shirtless before, but watching him strip between your spread legs was making you melt. He knelt down at your core, hands ripping apart your bra before kneading your breasts and rolling your nipples in between his fingers. You moaned out when Bucky pinched your nipples harshly.
“Nothing but you,” you repeated, biting your lip with anticipation.
“Doll, I’m going to fuck you so hard that you’ll completely forget who Sidney ever was. I’ll give you my love until you’re satisfied. You’ll think of nothing but me.”
“Good. Now let’s make sure that you will never be able to look at that man again without thinking of this moment," Bucky groaned as he began to nibble on your neck.
His lips sucked and nibbled at your skin, marking his territory. He tugged his underwear down his thighs, using his other hand to line his cock up with your entrance. Slowly and sensually, he rubbed his tip against you, getting lost in his own pleasure for a moment, forgetting to remind you who you belonged to. Loud moans escaped your mouth as he slammed into you with hardly any warning.
"Fuck, you're so tight, Doll,” Bucky groaned into your ear. “Feel so good.”
Bucky lifted your legs up onto his chest so your calves rested on his shoulders. He pulled your hips into his and started pushing into you repeatedly, almost mercilessly.
“Sidney only wishes that he could fuck you like this,” he leaned over so his face was up close to yours. “But no one will ever fill you up like I can. No one can make you feel good the way I can. You’re mine, Doll, only for me to have.”
“Buc-” you breathed, barely able to speak.
“What are you?”
“Yours Sergeant, I’m all yours. Promise. Yours. Only yours!” you repeated over and over.
Desperate for your release, you reached down to your clit.
“Don’t even think about it,” Bucky growled. “You come on my cock screaming my name or you don’t come at all.”
Bucky leaned forwards til his face was inches from yours, bending your legs right up to your chest.
"You feel that, Doll? You feel how I fill you up?" Bucky demanded.
You nodded, unable to speak at first. Eventually you gasped out the words, "I feel you, Bucky.”
"And could he ever make you feel as good as I make you feel?" Bucky asked before going back to fucking you hard and fast.
"No Bucky, never,” you moaned.
You could feel your orgasm approaching far more rapidly than normal and Bucky had gone back to marking his territory with his lips on your skin. It almost burned where he was sucking against your clavicle.
“Bu- Buck-”
“Yeah?” He slowed to respond to your attempts at his name.
His lips were only inches away from yours. All you wanted was to meet them, but instead, Bucky bit your lip harshly, making you throw back your head in pleasure as he kept sucking on you.
"That's what I want to hear," Bucky cooed as he finally kissed you.
He buried his face into your breasts as his thrusts became more frantic. His hands snaked around your waist, a surprisingly soft action for all the roughness he’d displayed up until this point. The moans he released into your ear alone would make you come. The feeling of his balls slapping against your ass, cock diving deep inside of you, sent you spiraling.
“Bucky!” You muttered his name, unable to focus on anything but the way his cock and hands worked your body, filling you to the brim. Pleasure completely overwhelming your mind and body.
“That’s right, Doll. You were made for me.”
“Please, Bucky, I want to come!” There was nothing that could stop the cry that leaves your lips, you needed it so badly, you wanted him so badly.
“Do it already,” Bucky goaded. “Come for me. Come because I want you to.”
“Yes Bucky, yes!” You as his words finally pushed you over the edge, his name leaving your lips as you finally reached your peak.
The only thing you could think of was his cock thrusting inside you. Your pussy clenched and tightened around his cock making him release with a grunt and a moan as he coated you in his seed. He stayed inside you, catching his breath, playing with your hair, looking into your eyes with such complete adoration that it almost took your breath away. At least until he pulled out of you slowly, making his cum spill out of you and drip across your abdomen.
“You did such a good job, Doll,” Bucky whispered to you as he softly kissed your forehead. “My pretty girl. You rest now, let me clean you up.”
You pushed yourself up the bed, trying to avoid spilling his seed all over the clean bed sheets. Bucky reappeared quickly with a washcloth and started wiping himself off your skin, parting your legs gently and cleaning over your folds.
“Bucky, I-” you reached out to stop him, suddenly feeling incredibly self conscious about this new level of intimacy. “You don't have to.”
Bucky sat down beside you, tucking a stray strand of hair behind your ear. “Let me take care of you,” he murmured, voice filled with tenderness.
He finished up and lay down beside you, giving you one of his looser fitting t-shirts which you slipped over your head gratefully. You tucked yourself into his side and rested your head on his shoulder, sighing as his fingers fluttered over your thighs and over the curve of your ass.
“Was that okay?” he whispered into your hair, his warm breath blowing against the bare skin on your neck.
“It was amazi-.” You started answering but your voice was interrupted by a loud growl from your stomach.
“Still hungry, huh?”
You blushed, hiding your face in his warm sturdy chest.
“Want to grab some dinner. Can't have my best girl starving.”
A warmth spread through you at his words. “Maybe in a bit? I don't want to move yet. Is that okay?” You looked up at him.
He smiled down at you, placing a small kiss at the tip of your nose. “Perfect.”

Tumblr media
You cover your mouth as you tried not to laugh as her boyfriend – who managed to get injected with the truth serum while they were trying to stop a few the flag smashers.
“you poor poor thing. . .”
You tease Bucky seeing how he looked annoyed and grumpy as he sat across from her – he was definitely mad at himself.
Bucky looks up at you.
Despite being under the influence of the Truth Serum – he’s annoyed by his girlfriend’s teasing and playful nature.
He doesn’t say anything – but the annoyed expression plastered on his face is clear enough.
You grins at your grumpy looking boyfriend.
“How you feeling, sergeant?”
You teased him cutely.
Bucky raises his eyebrow a little, slightly irritated by your continued teasing.
He finally breaks his silence.
“I feel. . . cranked; weird. This stuff’s really messing with my head.”
He looks at you – his expression slightly softer now but still slightly annoyed.
You sighed – gently holding his hand caressing it knowing he hated things that messed with his head or mind.
Bucky’s eyes follow your hand as you hold his.
His grip tightens slightly as you rub his hand. After a moment – his expression softens a little but his annoyance with the truth serum still hasn’t subsided.
Then you smirk – seemingly have very bright idea as she looked back up at your boyfriend holding back a huge mischievous grin.
Bucky watches you as you look up at him. He raises an eyebrow in curiosity, clearly wondering what exactly she’s planning.
“So. . .I just realized, I can ask you any question I want.”
You snickered.
Bucky doesn’t say anything at first.
He watches you and your mischievous grin with growing suspicion and curiosity – knowing exactly where this is leading. After a moment, he responds.
“I suppose you could. . .”
You smirked and leaned back crossing her arms thinking of the perfect questions.
As you lean back and thinks of the perfect questions to ask him, Bucky’s curiosity grows and he leans forward slightly – his eyes locked on you.
“How many women have actually been with back in the 40s!”
You instantly blurts out asking him – knowing he was quite the ladies man.
He raises his eyebrows and looks at you, and then he can’t help but let out a chuckle.
“I don't know the exact number. . .but more than you can count on two hands. . .and more. . .”
He shrugs his shoulders – still smirking.
Your jaw dropped “James. Buchanan. Barnes!”
“It doesn’t count if it was in war time!”
He mutters as if it were a valid excuse.
“Oh, of course, you probably slept with every nurse in the camp, didn’t you?”
You rolled your eyes at him.
“Not every nurse.”
He chuckles.
“But. . .I think. . .a lot of them. Yeah. . .”
He says thinking – causing you to raise an eyebrow at him.
“I was lonely, okay? And, I was young. And. . . hormonal.”
He shrugs again.
You smirk as the truth serum causes Bucky to say more of the truths.
Bucky clears his throat looking away – seemingly trying to keep himself shut; a faint blush from embarrassment on his cheeks.
“Right then. . .Hmm. . .”
You leaned back thinking of questions.
He waits patiently - or, as patiently as he can. The truth serum is doing its so-called magic.
Then she smirks again.
“When, how and where did you lose your virginity?”
His eyes widen.
“Jesus Christ. . .”
Bucky sighs and looks at you.
“You are making me answer everything, aren’t you?”
He’s slightly nervous – but doesn’t deny what he had just said.
You only smirk at your boyfriend.
“You know about mine”
You said.
“Yeah! Because I’m the one that took it! – I hate you right now!”
He rolls his eyes, but the smirk never leaves his face.
You only smirk as you watch him fight against the truth serum.
Bucky tries to hold it back – shutting his eyes but it was forced out.
“You’re evil”
Bucky laughs, slightly annoyed. But he doesn't lie to answer the question.
“The first time was in a bar. . .with a random waitress. . . in the back of the kitchen. . .Or back alleyway. I don’t even remember.”
He shrugs – “I was young and stupid.”
You just blink at him
“Wow. . .”
You whispered.
“What? You thought I was always a saint?”
He laughs lightly.
“I wasn’t always Winter Soldier, doll.”
“Come on. We were soldiers, back in the 40s. It was practically guaranteed to hook-up with other soldiers.”
Bucky smirks at the memory – “It was fun, I can't deny it.”
“Funny, how you can remember all that but not anything else!”
You narrowed your eyes at your boyfriend.
“I remember. . .certain parts of my time in the 40s.”
He looks back at her, smirking.
“I remember the women” He chuckles. – “It was one of the perks of being a soldier, back then.”
“Do you have a death wish?”
She asked her boyfriend – growing a little jealous now.
“Don’t start, doll”.
He says, knowing he’s in trouble. – “Relax.”
He looks into your eyes again – “It was a lifetime ago, honey. I’m all yours now.”
But you still had your eyes narrowed.
“Y/N. . .”
Bucky sighs – still looking into your eyes.
“I’m in love with you. It’s been years since I’ve even spoken of any of the women from my past. Can’t we just move on?”
He tries to smile in a reassuring way.
“I’m your only one. All the other women from my past. . .”
He chuckles to himself.
“They’re all just a distant memory at this point.”
Bucky says – gently tries to coax you into his arms again.
“Promise?”
You asked – as you reluctantly lets yourself be pulled into his arms.
“Always, doll.”
He smiles and wraps his arms around you.
“Just trust me, Y/N. I’m yours. . .and only yours.”
He gently leans in to kiss him.
You smile and softly kiss him back.
It wasn’t long before Bucky placed your back against the mattress too.

Broken
Summary: after Civil War you meet and bond with Bucky Barnes. You want to help him, but do you really realize how hard it's going to be?
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Female Reader
Warnings: Minimal use of Y/N. Hints to eating disorder. Language probably, for now just fluff and innocent and broken Bucky. My poor attempts at being funny.
Word Count: 2.7K
A/N: This is my first story, and it's taken me a long time to even decide to post it. As of now I honestly have no idea where this story is going, the idea just popped in my head and I ran with it. I do have the first three chapters ready and I'm starting the fourth, I hope I find a plot at some point, we'll see how this one does and go from there.
Also, this is a reader version of a story I have on wattpad with an OC, if anyone wants to check that out the name's the same :) I had to rewrite it accordingly so if there are any mistakes that's why, feel free to point them out so I can fix them thanks.

Tumblr media
You enter the kitchen of the Avengers tower and saw two people sitting at the counter, immediately recognizing the one closer to the door.
"Stevie!" you practically yell, running towards the blonde man who stands up and opens his arms in time for you to jump on him, hugging him tightly while he raises you in the air and spins a little.
"Good morning, koala bear." he says while chuckling lightly.
"When did you come back?" you ask excitedly after a few minutes of hugging, not letting go just yet.
"Last night." he answered "Nat said you had just gone to sleep, I didn't wanna wake you."
"Steve, what's happening? Is she hurting you?" a voice you've never heard says.
You let go just enough for him to be able to put you back on the ground without letting go of you.
"It's okay, Buck, it's just a hug." he say to the other man as you turn a little to look at him better. He has a confused look on his face, at which Steve adds "It's just a way to express affection, it's fine."
At this you're a little confused yourself so you look at Steve who gives you a look that tells you not to question him, so you don't.
Instead you let go of Steve, turning completely towards his friend and stepping a little closer.
"Hi," you say looking at him and introducing yourself.
He doesn't look very comfortable so you don't try to shake his hand, choosing to wave a little with a smile.
He answers with a quiet "Bucky." while looking at the ground, like he's quite sure if he's even allowed to answer.
You tilt your head to the side, considering him for a second before saying "Do you want a hug, too? I promise I won't hurt you." you add quickly after he raises his head a little and you notice a slightly worried look on his face.
He thinks about it before just shrugging and nodding his head slightly.
"Okay. Do you... want to get up?" you hesitantly ask and he raises his head a little more, still not looking at your face but slowly getting up from his chair.
You glance at Steve who seems very interested in what's happening and is watching intently without making a sound. Your eyes meet for a few seconds and he raises an eyebrow and motions slightly towards his friend as if to tell you to keep going. You nod and get closer to Bucky until you're right in front of him.
You watch him for a couple of seconds and when his head stays lowered you decide to take the lead and move to put your arms around his neck, slowly so as not to startle him.
After several seconds of you gently hugging him while he stands with his arms to his sides, you're about to pull away when you feel him slowly move his arms to your lower back and keep them there lightly, being very careful like he was afraid of hurting you.
You smile a little into his shoulder and wait a couple of minutes before pulling away.
"Now that wasn't so bad, was it?" you tease, your hands still on his shoulders.
He gives you a little smile and finally looks you in the eyes for the first time and, as soon as his eyes meet yours, you're transfixed by how blue they are.
You're not sure how long you two stay looking into each other's eyes, but you're brought back to reality by Bucky's voice.
"Are you okay?" he asks, seeming genuinely concerned.
"Yes? Um... if you ever want another hug I'm always up for it... I love giving hugs." you say smiling and taking your hands off his shoulders as he drops his arms to his sides again.
He drops his gaze to the ground again, while your eyes stay on his face and you see a small smile and a slight nod.
After a few more seconds of looking at him you turn around and start walking towards the fridge, passing Steve and noticing a weird smirk on his face.
"What?" you ask him with a confused look but still smiling.
"Nothing..." he says, still smirking.
"Okay, weirdo." you say back laughing a little.
"Okay, weirdo. Breakfast?" he asked.
"No, I'll just drink some water." you say casually, avoiding his eyes.
"Y/N..." he says warningly.
"It's fine, Stevie, I'm just not hungry." you say, still not looking at him and grabbing a water bottle from the fridge.
As soon as you turn around you're met with the slightly disappointed face of Steve and the confused face of Bucky.
"Besides I don't have to train until this afternoon..." Steve's worry doesn't fade, so you add "I'll eat something later, I swear." you don't know if he's convinced, but his face softens and he lets it go.
"How about you fill me in about what happened while I was gone?" he says, changing the subject with a sympathetic smile.
"Sure, I'll just take a shower first, is that okay?" He nods and you run to your room to take a quick shower.
After you come out you put on some sweatpants and a sports bra just to not have to change until after training.
You grab a hairbrush and run back downstairs where you find Steve waiting for you alone while sitting at the table.
"Hi koala, that was a quick shower." he says with a smile when he sees you.
You lean with your back to the counter in front of the table he's sitting at and start brushing your still damp hair.
"Yep, you know me it's either 5 minutes or 50." you say smiling while he chuckles. "Where'd your friend go?" you ask casually while concentrating on brushing away a knot in your hair.
"He went to take a shower. Last night he was so tired he practically passed out in the guest room."
You humm a response before asking "So, is he gonna live here now? You know, be a part of the team and all? Tony refused to share any details with me..." you add with disappointment, which you're sure he notices because of his answer.
"Tony's still not 100% okay with it, but he's getting there. You know how he is, he doesn't talk about things until he's finished processing them... anyway yes, he'll live here and eventually be part of the team, I hope."
You look up and think about his words before nodding and waiting for him to speak again, but when he doesn't you try to sound as casual as you can while asking questions about his friend. "Why did you have to tell him what a hug is?"
He doesn't look you in the eye and you know he's getting uncomfortable so you don't really expect him to answer. But he does nonetheless
"Buck's not really been himself for the last 70 years... he hasn't been shown a lot of kindness or humanity. That's why I was surprised that he let you hug him so fast. Don't get me wrong I'm happy about it, it's real progress I just wasn't expecting it so soon..." You let him talk without interrupting, pretending to be more concentrated on your hair than his word so as to not make him even more uncomfortable.
You know stories about Bucky in the 40s from Steve and you have seen photos of him, only in black and white, but it was nothing compared to having him in front of you. Something about him just made you want to know more, like you were drawn to him.
You guess Steve picked up on this because, after a little pause, he adds "Look, I know you want to know more, but it's not my story to tell. If and when he's ready, it's up to him who he wants to tell." damn him for knowing you so well.
Of course you understand what he was saying and you know he's right, so you nod and say "You're right... I won't push it, I promise." before he has time to reply though Bucky enters the kitchen with different clothes and wet hair.
To not let him know you were just talking about him Steve quickly says "So, tell me, what have I missed around here?"
You thought about it for a moment as you watch Bucky make his way through the kitchen and sit at the table next to Steve.
"Um, well, Tony made a new addition to the team. It was very abrupt and it's weird that he's so young, but he's a nice kid. His name is Peter, he's 15 from Queens and apparently he's this Spider-man that's been all over youtube. What?"
As you talked you could see a bit of guilt on Steve's face. "We've met him... didn't know he was a kid though..."
"Well, what happened?" you ask, getting more and more frustrated that no one will tell you anything.
You're part of the team after all, and, even though you don't have powers or are a super soldier, you think you have a right to know why everyone suddenly disappeared one day on some mission that you weren’t allowed to know anything about, and why it took half of the team a couple more weeks than the others to come back.
It's not that it was uncommon for you not to know details of a mission you weren't assigned to, but, since Fury chose you from the SHIELD agents to join the Avengers several years ago, it's never happened that a mission required the WHOLE team except one single person.
What pissed you off even more it's that you're not the youngest in the team, nor are you the newest or the least trained.
You started as a SHIELD agent right before Natasha, granted you were a teenager, but both of you trained a lot together with Clint and you fought alongside the other Avengers in the battle of New York.
You also fought together against Ultron, where you united forces with the Maximoff twins, Wanda and Pietro, (the latter had to spend a lot of time in the medbay after, having almost died) and then also Vision, which is still a little weird since you still have Jarvis controlling the tower.
In all of this time you developed family-like bonds with the whole team.
You honestly consider Tony a father figure, him and Pepper treat you like a daughter and you love them for it. Rhodey, Happy and Bruce are like uncles.
Natasha is like a big sister and Wanda is like a younger one. Clint, Thor and even Loki (since he's been made to spend his exile with you as punishment for New York) have been like big brothers to you, Vision and Pietro are kind of like younger brothers, and now even Peter the last few months.
Scott is another new face that's quickly becoming a chaotic best friend. Sam is like a best friend that still shamelessly flirts with you, after years, obviously knowing nothing is going to happen.
And Steve is your absolute best friend, your favorite brother. He's overprotective (to be fair they all are when it comes to you) and caring, can't really say no to you, spoils you a little and you love every minute of it.
They are your family, and having them keep what feels like a very serious and important situation from you, and only you, not only makes you extremely angry, but it's also very sad to think they don't trust you enough.
Or at least that's what it feels like even though they keep telling you that's absolutely not the case.
You can see how uncomfortable Bucky is getting, while Steve is looking more and more guilty by the second, but neither is saying anything, so you just give up.
"Fine," you say, a little disappointed. "Don't tell me. I guess I'll have to wait on Tony to know."
You don't wait for them to answer as you bring your attention to Bucky.
"Can I?" you ask him while pointing to his hair with the brush that you just finished using on yourself.
He gives just you a confused look, so you explain. "Your hair is pretty long, it would be better if you brushed it before it dries otherwise it hurts like hell to do it later."
He looks at Steve with an uncertain expression, and, when the blonde just shrugs in response, Bucky looks back at you and nods.
You go around the table and position yourself behind Bucky. "I'll be as gentle as I can, but I'm sorry if I hurt you. If you want me to stop, just say so, okay?"
He nods again and you start to slowly and carefully brush his hair while telling Steve all the things you did with the others while he was gone.
The mysterious mission happened about 3 months ago, half of the team came back after a day, the others a couple of weeks later, while Steve and Bucky were the only ones to come back just now.
You tell Steve how you bonded with Peter over being "Tony's children", how Scott became something of a girlfriend and the time you spent with him and his daughter, Cassie, who was just adorable.
You tell him about the weird best friend-like friendship that Peter and Loki developed, much to Tony's annoyance, but that you find very cute and funny.
You tell him about all the pranks that you pulled with anyone and against everyone, specially with Sam, Scott and Loki and against Happy, Clint and Thor.
Steve knows everyone in the team is very quick to forgive you, he always jokes about how you have everyone wrapped around your finger, especially Tony.
And you have to admit, he's not totally wrong. Nobody really stays mad at you for more than a couple of days, and sometimes you're definitely treated like the kid of the family. The golden child.
Even Fury has a soft spot for you, which is very rare, to the point that you're the only one allowed to call him Nick.
You also tell Steve of all the "family time" he missed, which is essentially a whole lot of movie nights, game nights and things like that.
You tell him all the jokes you can remember being said, all the funny moments, all the missions and all the times when you missed him like crazy.
By the time you're done telling him everything you could remember, he's crying laughing and you're almost done with Bucky's hair.
"Are you okay? Am I hurting you?" you ask Bucky, as Steve tries to compose himself, still laughing at the prank you and Sam pulled on Clint where you turned his whole room into a giant bird's nest.
Bucky shakes his head and says a quiet "I'm okay" that you're sure Steve doesn't even hear over his own laughter.
You gently finish brushing his hair, then sit in the chair next to him leaning in and gently turning his head towards you so you can check you did a complete job.
At this point his hair is dry and falling down both sides of his face. You push his hair behind his ears to see his face better and smile, his eyes scanning your face.
Neither of you take notice that Steve has stopped laughing and is watching you with the same smirk he had after you hugged as you're both too intent in taking in each other's appearances.
"Is that better?" you ask after a few minutes of silence.
"What?" he ask, a little confused, which makes you giggle.
"Your hair. Is that better?" you ask again.
"Oh. Yeah, thank you." he says blushing, his voice still very quiet.
"You're adorable." you said with another giggle that makes Steve laugh too, while Bucky blushes even more.
You smile at him again before getting up, giving Steve a kiss on the side of the head while you pass him and going towards the door. "I'll see you guys at lunch. I'm supposed to meet Scott and Cassie in 10 minutes. Bye, Stevie."
"Bye, koala bear." Steve answers.
"Bye, Bucky."
"Bye." he says, still kind of quiet but loud enough for you to hear.
You turn around and give him one last smile before going through the living room to the elevator and to the floor that Scott's now living in and where Cassie spent the night.

* = Smut (Minors DNI) || 🦋 = Series || Beware of the TW please
Bucky Barnes x Reader
Do you love Bucky series? @justkending is the writer for you! Here are some of my favourites:
Finding Memories 🦋 (Bucky Barnes x Enhanced!Reader, Waking up with little to no memory of her past, and being saved by a group of individuals who call themselves heroes, sends a long time captive for a whirlwind trying to find some form of grounding in this world she quickly learns runs on chaos. But she’s not the only one trying to figure out her forgotten backstory. Bucky Barnes, along with the other Avengers, can’t help but sense that there is a lot more to the whole situation than a diagnosis of amnesia. Her background slowly starts to come forward in pieces of her past and hidden information discovered. Who is she? And why was she in the room they were meant to destroy?)
The Number One Rule 🦋 (Bucky Barnes x Rogers!Reader, Y/N has always been seen as “Steve’s rambunctious sister.” However, she grew up, graduated, and moved to London to study abroad for 4 years and get her bachelor’s degree. The girl that returns looks nothing like the teenager that left. But don’t worry, the attitude is still there and stronger than ever. What’s to come of the two grown adults that used to push each other’s buttons, but now have a lot more in common than they’ve ever realized?)
The Slip Up 🦋 (Bucky Barnes x Single mom!Reader, After a last hurrah to graduating college with a future to be a family practitioner, a little slip up happens… Seven years down the road, just when things just now seem to be going smoothly, Y/N approaches that slip up from all those years ago. She’s not looking for anything right now. She is just where she wants to be in life. It seems the universe has a different idea though. One called James Barnes.)
So, my number one for smutty Bucky is the wonderful @sinner-as-saint. Here are a few of my favourites:

You’re at his house regularly; tidying up and cleaning and surprisingly you’re not scared of him like the rest of his staff are. Sure he is authoritative, and mean but he’s never disrespectful or inappropriate, nor does he bark orders at you like he does with the guys. And you were almost certain that he barely pays attention to you. Until one evening he confronts you about something. And what starts out heated, ends in a night neither of you will ever forget…)

Diner Girl || @ofstarsandvibranium (Fem!Reader, After coming across a small diner, he becomes enamoured with you, a waitress)

Emma is caught in the middle of a war as she becomes intent on protecting the man she calls her father and siding with her grandfather. Summary: After their plan to execute Randall is upended, everything they know goes up in flames. Daryl, Iris and Glenn uncover a shocking truth, something Rick has been keeping from everyone. Warnings/Information: AMC's The Walking Dead OC Insert | 18+ Advised | strangers to lovers; the slowest of slow burns; gore; angst; horror; humour; m/f; discussion of walkers, a few minor injuries, broken neck, suggestions of murder/conspired murder/murder attempts, the barn is on fire, abandoning ancestral home, huge walker herd, familial death (canon), (somewhat) abandonment
Chapter 19 - Rotten
Iris and Daryl got their things packed and prepared for the trip before Rick came back over from the barn.
“Ready?” He asked.
“Yeah.” Daryl replied, Iris nodding along.
“I’ll go get the package.” T-Dog offered, jogging off toward the shed. Iris hauled open the back door of the truck, depositing a backpack of things Carol had prepared for Randall. T-Dog came running back fairly quickly, the look on his face saying everything they needed to know. “He’s gone.”
“What?” Rick asked, turning around.
“Randy’s gone. All’s left is a pair of handcuffs covered in blood, man.” He replied. They took off running toward the shed, Daryl practically ripping the door open. Rick knelt down to inspect the pile of blankets and the handcuffs. T-Dog went to tell the others and word spread fast.
“How long’s he been gone?” Iris asked, looking at the others.
“’S hard to say.” Daryl grumbled.
“The cuffs are still hooked.” Rick murmured, coming out of the shed to find what looked like the whole group waiting expectantly. “He must have slipped ‘em.”
“Is that possible?” Carol asked, stepping forward.
“Could have dislocated his wrist.” Iris suggested. “Doesn’t have much to lose.”
“Little runt couldn’t even pinch himself without screaming bloody murder.” Daryl replied.
“The door was secured from the outside.” Hershel observed, flicking the gold lock.
“Rick! Rick!” Shane yelled suddenly, storming out from the forest.
“What happened?” Lori asked. It was a good question. His face was bloodied, his nose obviously broken. It was spattered all over his shirt, his hands.
“He’s armed!” Shane replied. “He’s got my gun!”
“Are you okay?” Carl asked, worried.
“I’m fine. Little bastard just snuck up on me, clocked me in the face.”
“Alright. Hershel, T-Dog, get everybody back in the house. Glenn, Daryl, Iris, come with us.” Rick ordered, pulling out his pistol and meeting Shane halfway.
“Just let him go. That was the plan, wasn’t it? To just let him go?” Carol asked.
“The plan was to cut him loose far away from here. Not on our front step with a gun.” Rick replied shortly. Iris frowned. She watched as Shane took a gun from T-Dog, glancing back at the forest where he emerged. There was no way. It just wasn’t believable. Yet, everyone around her was immediately in fight or flight. Something wasn’t adding up.
“Don’t go out there, y’all know what can happen!” Carol warned.
“Get everybody back in the house. Lock all the doors and stay put!” Rick ordered. Iris adjusted her knife belt as they stalked off into the woods.
“I saw him head up through the trees that way before I blacked out.” Shane explained, gesturing. “I’m not sure how long.”
“Couldn’t have gotten far. He’s hobbled, exhausted.” Rick replied.
“And armed.” Glenn stated.
“So are we.” Rick replied.
“Can you track him?” Rick asked Daryl.
“No, I don’t see nothing.” He replied, frowning into the dirt.
“Hey, look, there ain’t no use in tracking him, okay? He went that way. We just need to pair up.” Shane stated firmly. Iris raised an eyebrow. Suspicious motherfucker. “We spread out, we just chase him down, that’s it.”
“Okay, this is ridiculous. I’m not combing through the forest for this kid when you probably left him dead in a ditch somewhere.” Iris spat, facing Shane.
“Then go on back, princess, we don’t need you.” He huffed.
“Kid weighs a buck-twenty-five soaking wet. You trying to tell us he got the jump on you?” Daryl asked, frowning at him.
“I’d say a rock pretty much evens those odds, wouldn’t you?” Shane asked, tilting his head. Iris rolled her eyes.
“Alright, knock it off. You three start heading up the right flank. Me and Shane’ll take the left.” Rick interjected. “Remember, Randall’s not the only threat out there. Keep an eye out for each other.”
“You too.” Iris replied pointedly, earning a frustrated snort from Shane. He and Rick stalked off in one direction, leaving them to the other.
Daryl led the way, even as the sun set, through the woods. He was searching for tracks along the way, leaving Glenn to shiver nervously behind him. Iris was in the back, sharp eyes glancing ahead for any movement. She’d killed two walkers with throwing knives so far. Frogs and crickets accompanied their footsteps through dried leaves, but other than that, it was dead quiet.
“This is pointless. You’ve got a light?” Daryl asked, turning around. Glenn handed him a flashlight as they stopped, Daryl fanning the light around the ground. He sighed irritatedly when nothing revealed itself. “C’mon.” They continued walking, looking for any signs of life.
“I think Shane’s gonna try to kill Rick.” Iris murmured.
“What?” Glenn asked nervously, glancing between her and Daryl.
“Wouldn’t put it past ‘im.” Daryl replied. “Got us looking for hay in a haystack.”
“We’re back to square one, anyway.” Iris noted, looking around.
“If you’re gonna do a thing, you might as well do it right.” Daryl stated.
“How could you think Shane’ll try to kill Rick?” Glenn asked.
“Because he tried to before.” Iris replied. They both turned back to her in surprise. “Dale caught him. Shane threatened to kill him, too.”
“Mm.” Daryl grunted. “Keep sharp.”
“Jesus.” Glenn mumbled to himself. They continued on for a little while before Daryl caught something.
“There’s two sets of tracks right here. Shane must’ve followed him a lot longer than he said.” He mused. Iris hummed.
“Blood.” She pointed out. Daryl shone the flashlight on the edge of a tree, where a smear of blood caught their attention. Somewhat nose-shaped, she’d argue.
“More tracks.” Daryl continued, pointing the flashlight at the ground. “Looks like they’re walking in tandem.” A bird called in the distance, startling Glenn into walking into Daryl.
“Sorry.” He mumbled. He was practically shaking in his boots. Iris put a hand on his shoulder.
“There’s a little dust up right here.” Daryl murmured.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean something went down.” He continued. They followed the tracks with the light until they spotted Randall’s blindfold on the ground. “Had a little trouble…” A branch snapped behind them and the three of them ducked behind a group of trees. Just a walker. Daryl tossed Glenn the flashlight, gripping his crossbow.
They waited until it got closer, shambling through the dark toward them. Glenn spun out from behind the tree and shone the light in its face. It snarled in response, lunging at him. Glenn cried out as it shoved him to the ground. Daryl shot an arrow but his aim was wide and the walker too close. Daryl grunted as it practically collapsed on top of him, the crossbow the only thing in between its teeth and Daryl’s neck.
Iris kicked it sideways, finding the flesh hard. The walker was new. As in, newly dead. It fell to the side, snarling before she stabbed her knife into its brain. The noises stopped, as did its movement, and Glenn shone the flashlight down into his face. Randall. That was that. Grimacing, Iris pulled the knife from it’s skull.
“Nice.” Glenn breathed.
“We should check how he died.” Iris murmured, kneeling down beside Randall’s body. Daryl took the flashlight from Glenn, joining her. He poked and prodded the body, checking for wounds, but didn’t find anything until the neck. A decent-size protuberance indicated a broken bone.
“Got his neck broke.” Daryl stated, frowning. He flipped him over, double checking. “Got no bites.”
“Yeah, none you can see.” Glenn replied.
“No, I’m telling you. He died from this.” Daryl said assuredly, gesturing to the broken neck.
“So, what? He just… turned?” Iris murmured.
“How is that possible?” Glenn asked. They all glanced to one another before standing, leaving Randall’s body for the crows.
They began making their way back before a shot rang out. They started running, making their way back to the farm as quick as they could, but they’d be a while regardless. After a few minutes, there was another shot. Any walkers nearby could have heard it. They picked up the pace.
-
They made it back to the house rather quickly, finding the group sitting around the living room waiting for them. Rick and Shane were not there.
“Rick and Shane ain’t back?” Daryl asked, voicing Iris’ concern. What were those shots?
“No.” Lori replied.
“We heard a shot.” Iris said, frowning.
“Maybe they found Randall.” Lori suggested.
“We found him.” Daryl stated.
“Is he back in the shed?” Maggie asked.
“He was a walker.”
“Did you find the walker that bit him?” Hershel asked.
“He wasn’t bit.” Iris replied. “That’s the weird part.”
“His neck was broke.” Daryl added.
“So he fought back.” Patricia gleaned.
“The thing is, Shane and Randall’s tracks were right on top of each other. Shane ain’t no tracker, so he didn’t come up behind him. They were together.” Daryl explained.
“Would you please get back out there, find Rick and Shane and find out what on Earth is going on?” Lori pleaded.
“You got it.” Daryl nodded. Iris squeezed Lori's shoulder as she followed after Daryl. They were barely a step off the porch before the groaning and snarling from the field stopped them in their tracks. The whole farm was littered with walkers, on their way to the house. Iris turned around to the door, finding Glenn standing and seeing the same thing they were. He turned around to tell the others. “A herd this size will rip the house down.” Daryl murmured.
“We gotta get the hell out of here.” Iris replied.
“Carl’s gone.” Lori said, bursting through the door.
“What?” Daryl asked, turning around.
“He— he was upstairs. I can’t find him anymore.” She panted. “He’s supposed to be upstairs. I’m not leaving without my boy.”
“We’re not. We’re gonna look again, we’re gonna find him.” Carol assured, pulling Lori back inside. Iris ran a hand through her hair. She stopped halfway through the motion, instead tying it up tight, putting on her bandana. They’d have some shit to wade through, she gathered.
The others came out, gathering on the porch. Hershel and Andrea filtered through the guns, handing them out.
“Maggie.” Glenn stated with wide eyes, glancing at her in question.
“You grow up country, you learn a thing or two.” She stated, cocking a shotgun.
“I got the number, it’s no use.” Daryl warned Hershel.
“You can go if you want.” The old man replied firmly.
“You’re gonna take ‘em all on?”
“We have guns. We have cars.” He answered simply, cocking his own shotgun.
“We should kill as many as we can.” Andrea shrugged. “We can use the cars to lead the rest of them off the farm.”
“This isn’t… We’ll die here.” Iris stated, alarmed at the fact that they weren’t already driving away.
“Are you serious?” Daryl asked.
“This is my farm. I’ll die here.” Hershel replied.
“Alright. It’s a good a night as any.” Daryl shrugged, swinging his legs over the porch railing. Iris grabbed his arm.
“You’re not serious.” She said with wide eyes.
“I ain’t leavin’ ‘em all to die alone. Are you?” He asked quietly. Iris exhaled shakily.
“I suppose not.” She replied, grabbing one of the rifles. She followed him to the cars, everyone filing into the vehicles, bringing their absolute essentials. Of course, Iris had all of her essentials on her person at all times, but it was something you learned along the way.
“C’mon.” Daryl jerked his chin toward his bike.
“You sure?” Iris asked. He made a face at her and she shrugged, getting on the back of the bike. As they pulled away, the barn erupted into flames, drawing walkers left, right and centre. Daryl pulled right up to the fence outside the barn, standing and pulling out his gun. Iris climbed up onto the back of the bike, hooking her feet into the frame for a higher vantage point.
They unloaded onto the walkers around the barn, bodies dropping like flies. The others drove around the fences, passengers half out of the windows with their shotguns and rifles. Even Jimmy was hanging out of the RV window with a pistol.
“’s move.” Daryl called over his shoulder. Iris climbed down, swinging the gun over her shoulder as she grabbed hold of him. He drove over to the RV and called out to Jimmy. “Must have been Rick or Shane who started that fire. Maybe they’re trying to get out back. Why don’t you circle around? Go!”
“Got it!” Jimmy replied, taking off. As exposed as the bike was, it was agile. They weaved through the field, taking down walkers one by one, and at one point Iris flipped herself around so she could shoot backward. Hershel was standing on the front lawn with his shotgun, but they were barely making a dent. They had to go.
The RV stopped at the barn, but it hadn’t started moving again. Jimmy must have been overrun. Iris watched as the pickup truck pulled off the farm, followed by the SUV. They were leaving.
“Daryl.” Iris called over the noise. They both looked around at the swarms, knowing it was over. They might have called this place home, in another life. Yet now…
“We’re goin’.” He nodded, pulling away from the farm. The groans, snarls, and the sounds of the barn burning began to fade into the distance. Iris looked up at the sky, smelling smoke and rot. There was probably nothing left by now.
Even the dirt roads they drove through were crowded with walkers, but if anything, Daryl knew how to ride. Soon, the sun was rising and they might be on the other side of it. He pulled onto the main highway and soon enough they were close to where they’d left supplies for Sophia.
Iris let out a breath of relief as she saw Glenn and Maggie following behind them, then T-Dog, Lori, Carol and Beth. They pulled up and Rick, Carl, and Hershel came out from between a few cars. Rick seemed over the moon, shaking hands with Daryl and exchanging nods with Iris.
“Oh, thank god!” Lori cried, running over and sweeping her son into her arms, Rick holding them both close. Maggie practically leapt onto Hershel, Beth joining them.
“Where’s the rest of us?” Daryl asked, looking around at the group. Iris hugged Carol tight, glad to see she was okay and making sure to thank her, particularly, for the sewing job on her bandana.
“We’re the only ones who made it so far.” Rick replied quietly.
“Shane?” Lori asked. Rick shook his head.
“Andrea?” Glenn asked.
“She saved me, then I lost her.” Carol murmured.
“We saw her go down.” T-Dog stated, shaking his head.
“Patricia?” Hershel asked.
“They got her too.” Beth said quietly, gripping onto her father’s jacket. “Took her right in front of me. I was— I was holding onto her, daddy, she just… what about Jimmy, did you see Jimmy?”
“He was in the RV. It got overrun.” Rick explained softly.
“You definitely saw Andrea?” Carol asked to make sure.
“There were walkers everywhere.” Lori shook her head.
“Did you see her?” No one said anything.
“We could go back.” Daryl stated, stepping toward his bike.
“No.” Rick shook his head.
“We can’t just leave her.” He protested.
“We don’t even know if she’s there.” Lori stated.
“She isn’t there. She isn’t. She’s somewhere else, or she’s dead. There’s no way to find her.” Rick said firmly.
“So we’re not even gonna look for her?” Glenn asked.
“How would we even start? It’s not like how we—“ Iris stopped herself before she mentioned Sophia. “It’s not like before.”
“We have to keep moving.” Rick decided. “There have been walkers crawling all over here.”
“I say head East.” T-Dog suggested.
“Stay off the main roads.” Daryl added. They looked up as a walker growled in the distance, hobbling toward them. “The bigger the road, the more walkers, more assholes like this one. I got him.” He shot an arrow through its eye, quick and painful.
They all agreed together that it was the best course of action. So, they got back into their cars, or in Daryl and Iris’ case, on the bike, and followed Rick as he drove down the highway. East.

vibe: "I'm testing something." Alicia whispered.
His brows furrowed in confusion as her hand crawled slowly up his arm until it stopped just below his elbow. "When was the last time you kissed someone?" She asked softly.

“Why are you like this?” Bucky asked following behind Sam as they headed towards the hangar. The last thing he needed on this mission was to be partnered with her.
“It’s one mission, Buck.” Sam laughed, “Besides, if we’re all going to be a team and play nice with each other, you have to learn how to communicate with Alicia.”
Bucky huffed as he glanced to the side as they walked. The building is much quieter nowadays. Well, as quiet as it could be. Both Parker and Bishop moved in a month ago and within a week Bucky had moved to the quietest hall in the building. The only probably now? His quarters were two doors down from hers…and that red hair… and those blue eyes that rival his own.
“I’m not the one with the communication issue.” He muttered quickly, earning himself a look from Sam. Bucky frowned. “I’m not! I’m her superior,” he started but the word felt foreign on his tongue and distasteful, “Ace hardly listens to any orders that I give her and when she does it’s her way.”
Sam sighed and stopped as they reached the Quinjet. “You know she hates it when you call her that.” His eyes darted around behind them checking for any of the other team members before speaking. “Listen, Alicia is a good addition to this team, a great one even. She’s got the skills you just refuse to see through whatever machismo front your putting up to hide the fact that somewhere deep down in that robo-brain of yours you actually like her.”
His heart started to race and it was one of the many times that Bucky was thankful Sam didn’t have super hearing. “I don’t like her.”
“You do.”
“No, I don’t.”
Sam rolled his eyes and shook his head, “okay argue with me all you want, but she’s still your partner on this mission so learn to actually listen to what she has to say.”
“I wouldn’t need to if she would just listen–”
“Reporting for Duty sir.” The sound of her voice carried through the hangar. Soft yet commanded the space around her. Chills ran down his spine the moment her footsteps stopped behind him.
“Agent,” Sam nodded, “you’ll be with Barnes today.”
Bucky turned just in time to see the slight fall of her features before she caught herself and pinned her shoulders back with a nod. “Great.”
Sam let out a chuckle and patted Bucky on the shoulder before climbing into the quinjet without them.
"Where do you need me, Barnes?" Alicia asked.
"Everywhere," Bucky thought, but managed to hold his composure in front of her. She looked at him with a raised brow, blue eyes boring into his with an intensity that he had to admire.
Alicia knew how to stand tall in front of him, shoulders rolled back so every vibe coming from her screamed confidence.
"You can go over the weapons once more, while I get the baby in the air. Make sure everything is as I taught you," he eventually answered. Alicia nodded, spun on her heels and stepped into the Quinjet.
"One mission," Bucky mumbled to himself while driving his fingers through his hair. His heart was galloping and he couldn't understand why. Maybe it was because her red hair and the confidence, that could easily be misjudged as arrogance, reminded him so much of Natasha.
Bucky had thought long and hard about the similarities the two redheads shared, but Natasha had inspired his confidence in his colleagues, encouraged him to embrace the team and fit in, Alicia's presence unsettled him. What was that phrase the kid used? Oh yeah, she set his spider sense tingling. He'd never really got over losing Natasha, both her and then Steve, and even Iron Dick at a push, had left him adrift.
As the Quinjet took to the air, Bucky could hear Alicia, talking herself through the weapons check routine he'd taught the new recruits. She might make him feel like there were ants under her skin, but he had to give her some credit, she was a quick learner when she put her mind to it. It was her damn fucking mouth, which she put into gear before fully engaging her brain, that made her so damn infuriating. And then that damn look, like the outcome had actually been planned and wasn't down to sheer pissing good luck. And for her then to have the cheek of accusing him of neither being an effective communicator or listener.
Bucky could feel the hairs on the back of his neck raise and realized he's got goosebumps on his arms, as he turned to look over his shoulder he realized his nemesis was standing inches away.
“What?” He asked, moving to reach for his locket to check on his own weapons, not meeting her heavy gaze.
Alicia smacked her lips loudly, “You need to cut the Winter Soldier out of your hair again.”
Bucky stilled, stunned into silence for a few heartbeats.
“I mean—“ Alicia blurted out. “Your hair— it’s getting longer!”
And there she was.
How could he become a better listener if she was always spitting nonsense at the most random times?
“You need to focus on our mission,” Bucky sighed, his already low patience level dropping drastically in a matter of seconds. “And my hair is completely fine.” ‎
“Alright,” she mumbled, resuming her task and clicking in place the barrel of her most trusted handgun. Then, in a venomous whisper to herself: “Not my fault you’re starting to look like Elvis.”
“Do you always just blurt out every thought that pops into your head?” Bucky asked, “or do you do it purely just to piss me off?”
He knew his mistake the second the corner of her pouty lips turned upwards into a shit eating grin. His heart thumped against his chest reminding him that maybe Sam wasn’t completely wrong.
“I’m not responsible for your feelings Sergeant Barnes.” She quipped, going back to checking her weapons. “I was just simply informing you that your hair makes you look like you’re about to break out in song while you gyrate across the ship's platform and while I would pay good money, really good money to watch you impersonate Elvis, we don’t have time for that.” Alicia’s bright blue eyes found his with that smirk he so badly wanted to wipe off her face.
“You’re pushing it Ace.” He said slamming his locker shut. Heat flickered in her eyes at the nickname, the jab a perfect hit. His own smirk crawled over his features as he sat down at the head of the quinjet. “Quit daydreaming and make yourself familiar with the layout of the warehouse.”
“I’m already familiar—“
“Do it again.” Bucky barked, keeping his eyes forward on the clouds. A huff sounded from behind him with a muttered “yes sir,” before her footsteps disappeared away from him. He swallowed hard, guilt and frustration making an angry mess in his chest but this wasn’t a game to him. It never had been and taking precautions was important. If she didn’t understand that then he would make her.
"Twenty minutes 'till arrival," the Quinjet informed Bucky, so he took a deep breath and went once more over his own equipment, securing multiple guns and knives on his tactical suit.
Alicia returned with a large blueprint in her hands, slamming it on the table in the middle of the lockers with a loud thud.
Bucky turned, seeing her studying the paper in front of her with concentration.
"Let's go over the mission one more time."
"But I'm just coming out of the briefing..."
"I know, but as you've probably realized, I was busy getting the jet ready for our departure, so I wasn't at the briefing."
"Right. I'd never miss the grumpy vibes radiating from you," Alicia mumbled under her breath. A normal man wouldn't have heard it, but Bucky's super soldier senses allowed him to hear more than he'd liked to. He clenched his teeth in disapproval, but decided to ignore her.
"The documents are secured in an old wood factory, located in the middle of the forest underneath us. The factory has been abandoned for a few years now, but it's not our target anyway. Scans showed that there is an extended tunnel system under the area, reaching from the factory all the way to another house that was supposed to be the forester's home," Bucky started.
"We're entering the tunnels through one of the ventilation shafts that end right next to the main building of the factory. Redwing's scans this morning showed that there are only a few men guarding the factory, so we should be easily able to reach and enter the shaft without distraction." Alicia pointed her finger on the X on the map that signaled the entrance point through the shaft, showing off her burgundy painted fingernails.
"Never call a mission easy. You'll jinx it," Bucky growled.
"Wouldn't have seen you as the superstitious guy, Sergeant Barnes," she commented with a smirk.
"I'm not superstitious, just very fond of my life."
"Suuuuure," Alicia mumbled under her breath.
Bucky patted himself down, one last check that his favorite knife was in his most accessible holster, and eyed Alicia’s tactical suit too.
“Move your glock, Ace—”
“That’s what she said.”
Bucky blinked slowly, flicking his tongue up to his top lip as a beat of silence passed between them before he continued, nonplussed.
“That gun is your strength and you’ll never reach it quick enough if it’s holstered on your less dominant side.”
Surprisingly, Alicia did as she was told and Bucky thanked the high heavens for at least one win today. His gaze flicking to her slicked back ponytail — not a hair out of place — and her suddenly serious expression as he gave her a nod.
“Lead the way, Sarge.” Then she beamed, big and bright, and Bucky groaned, swiping his metal hand over his face.
The forest wasn’t very thick, with large gaps between the trees. Bucky wasn’t sure if it would help or hinder them but the broad branches of the canopy were enough to disguise the quinjet in the clearing they touched down in.
They stood side by side at the ramp, eyes alert for any threat but there were none and the two Avengers made their way out of the clearing and into the forest in the direction of their factory target.
Quietly, the Quinjet closed back up behind them. He took a deep breath, listening, watching, trying to gauge just how close the guards were. "Should be through this area of forest," he said quietly, pointing straight in front of him.
The two Avengers tracked silently through the forest, only stopping to check their bearings and to listen for signs of life. Redwing had shown that there were few patrols in this area, which is why they'd chosen that particular landing site.
Bucky had to admit that, when her mouth was shut and she was focussed on the mission, the girl could potentially make a half decent agent. She was light on her feet and her eyes were constantly monitoring the terrain whilst still.being watchful for danger and able to clock his position. He spotted movement ahead and was impressed that when he turned to signal their stop, she was already signaling the alert back, nodding her agreement.
Alicia’s dominant hand reached for her holster, hovering over it as she made a first step sideways to cover Bucky’s side. She clenched her jaw, her focus unwavering.
His gaze lingered there, following the motion of her throat as she swallowed.
Funny how a single, innocent action could derail the train of thought of even the best soldier on the field.
In a matter of seconds, a sliver of light passed right by him. The air thickened as his senses fired up with danger signals.
In front of him a guard fell on the soft layer of leaves with a deaf thud, an all too familiar blade handle standing straight from his chest.
“Did you just throw my knife at him?” Bucky asked, almost giving himself whiplash from turning in Alicia’s direction.
“You just dropped something, Sarge,” She blinked up at him. “Your jaw.”
"Don't touch my knife." He grumbled pressing his foot to the guard's chest and pulling it out in one swift motion. He wiped the blood on his pant leg before putting it back into his holster. "Did you bring any of your own?" Bucky glanced up at her watching as her eyes scanned the treeline around them.
"Your's was closer." She muttered her blue gaze flicking down to his before she readjusted her grip on her gun and pushed forward. Bucky stood there, staring at her with a thousand thoughts running through his mind. It was impressive, her speed and aim. He had seen her in the training room, plenty of times throwing daggers at foam forms but never quite like that. "You coming?" She asked, cutting through his thoughts.
He narrowed his eyes at her and nodded.
It wasn’t long before they made it to the factory. The building looked decrepit, surrounded by rubble and rotting wood.
“This looks safe,” Alicia muttered, shuddering as a large bird landed on the roof and more brick and stone fell to the ground by the rusted iron doors.
“We’ll be fine. Stay alert, watch my six. We make it to the vent, that’s half the job done.”
“See, how can I not say it’s an easy op when you make it sound like a piece of cake?”
Bucky glanced at her over his shoulder, two seconds away from an eye roll as he brought his fingers to his lips and mimed zipping them shut.
“Shut up, Alicia. Got it, Sarge.”
Bucky couldn’t contain the eye roll that time, choosing to ignore anything that came out of Alicia’s mouth that wasn’t mission imperative. He raised a hand, pointing two sharp fingers towards the entrance and made a mental note to knock Sam upside the head.
On the lightest of steps, both Bucky and Alicia crept silently to it and swiftly pulled it open, careful not to make a sound to alert any guards. With a confirming nod, Bucky went it first and then felt as Alicia went in after him.
He sent a silent prayer nothing would give out from underneath their weights as a low creak sounded.
Thankfully it was a short distance and they reached the end of it without trouble, checked their surroundings and headed for the hidden lab.
“This is it,” Alicia muttered, approaching an unmarked and nondescript door.
She stood to the side, her hand on the door handle and then nodded to Bucky, awaiting his confirmation that he was ready. One brusque nod in return and they were entering and sweeping the room with a syncopation that belied the short amount of time they’d actually worked together.
Bucky stared at her, rifling through paperwork, her bottom lip pinched between her teeth in concentration. Maybe he’d been too hard on her, maybe she deserved…
“You ok there, Sarge?” She asked, shaking him from his reverie. “You look a little dazed. You didn’t touch any of the bottles did you? Didn’t breathe in any powder or gas? ‘Cause I’ve read things and as much as we’re teammates there ain’t no way I’d assist you in-”
“Can it, Ace, just keep looking,” he grumbled, his brows drawn into a frown.
Bucky watched as she rolled her eyes and continued her search. He turned and looked out of the door, looking side to side, making sure they weren't followed. He could hear every step, every shuffle of paper, every drawer and folder she opened. "Any luck?"
"Nothing," she shook her head, turning towards him. "And the intel was definite that the formula was still here?" She asked.
"You know as much as I do," he retorted, "you being in the briefing and all." He blew out a frustrated breath, turning away from her his eyes focussed on the bench at the far corner of the room. The drawers were all closed, with individual keyholes in each.
"Over here," Bucky suggested, covering the distance in a few strides.
Her footsteps behind him were careful, calculated and he counted each one until he knelt in front of the bench. Warm vanilla and lavender flooded his senses as she squatted next to him, running her fingers over each key hole. "Think you can get this open?" He asked, his voice strained as he tried to not let her sweet smell overwhelm him.
"Maybe," She said with furrowed brows as she glanced closer. "You think they're in here?"
"It's the only one locked." He said plainly.
"It could also be a decoy." Alicia frowned, pulling out a small tool kit. "Use those ears of yours and listen for more guards while I do this."
Bucky scowled, "you ain't the boss here Ace."
"And you don't have the lock picking skill I do." She quipped back scooting closer to the drawers. "Have my back for once."
Bucky grumbled but took watch, glancing back at Alicia every few seconds. She hummed under her breath as she worked and he tried to drown it out, focusing his ears on the faint sounds beyond the door, picking out noise in the wind and footsteps too far away to worry about yet.
“How’s it looking?”
“My pick keeps jamming, but I can feel it loosening. Just give me a moment,” Alicia replied, “I’ve got this, Sarge.”
“I know you do, Ace,” Bucky mumbled, pacing towards the door on light feet.
“So you do trust me to do my job?”
“Never said I didn’t. I just—” he was cut off when something clicked loudly and the sound of metal sliding on metal had him spinning on his heel.
“Ah-ha! I’m in!”
"Careful!" The order came out quickly from Bucky, startling her as he rushed to her before she could touch anything.
Alicia's hands were raised away from the drawer, apprehensive as he approached her and braced himself to open it.
"It could be booby trapped," Bucky felt the need to explain. Even if he knew that she understood without saying the dangers possibly lurking everywhere.
"Step back, let me handle it." He ordered firmly.
With a raised brow, Alicia stood back on her feet and gestured to the drawer in a sweeping motion.
"I don't think it's fair that you'd take a possible hit but.. all yours Sarge."
“Nice,” he nodded, a small smile gracing his features. “Now let’s get the hell out of here.”
Bucky watched as Alicia rolled the paperwork and stowed it inside the zip of her combat gear.
"What?" She asked, feeling a scorning judgment brewing behind his hooded gaze. "This way I've got both hands free in case we need to fight our way out."
"Well we may well need to do that. Come on, shift gears," cocking his head towards the door back to the tunnels. Checking the coast was clear before stepping out, Bucky took the lead, heading back in the direction they had entered the facility. Alicia followed close behind, watching to ensure there were no surprises from the rear.
"Oi!" Two men rounded the back corner of the building, stopping both Bucky and Alicia in their tracks.
Alicia spun around, flashing a smile he had never seen before but sent a burst of butterflies through his stomach. "Hey boys!" She grinned, "Interesting place you've got here. Any renovations planned?"
The two men shared a confused look before looking back at her. "Why don't you unzip that suit and show us what you have underneath it."
A low snarl from his left almost made him turn to look at her but before he could even stop it, she took a step forward.
"I tried being nice." She said before going straight for the one who made the comment. Bucky let out a sigh as the other man made eye contact with him and grinned before charging at him.
"Son of a bitch." He whispered as fists started flying.
The fight was quick but messy. Bucky ended up with more blood on him than he would have liked, caught off guard just once when his eyes were on Alicia, holding her own but visibly tiring as she took on the other man.
It ended with two unconscious goons dumped in the woods and the two Avengers making a run for the quinjet, a little bruised and battered but with the papers still secure in Alicia's pocket.
"You did good back there, Ace," Bucky murmured as he fired up the jet. He set the nav system to autopilot before joining her in the rear, plopping down beside her with a heaving sigh. "Any injuries that can't wait?"
With a shake of her head, Alicia pulled the documents out and handed them over.
"All good, Sarge. You'll need these for your report later, right?"
"Oh, uh. Yeah. Thanks, agent."
"I'm gonna take the bunk, wake me when we're back?" Alicia murmured and all Bucky could do was nod before leaving her to it, making his way back up front and knocking one of the books he kept hidden for long journeys down from the locker above the control panel.
A four-note whistle dragged Bucky abruptly from his book and he cursed under his breath at Alicia, who stretched languidly after her nap and joined him in the co-pilot seat.
“What the hell was that?” He grumbled, more in embarrassment at being so distracted as to not hear her moving around in the back.
She repeated the whistled tune and Bucky’s gaze homed in on her pursed lips and the teasing glint in her eye.
“You keep doin’ that but I still don’t know what-“
“It’s from the movie, dumbass. Sorry, I mean Sarge” she chuckled, crossing her legs up on the control panel and gesturing to his copy of The Hunger Games.
“They made a movie of it?” He asked, his eyebrows raising in pleasant surprise before he caught himself and scowled once more. “I like books better.”
“Course you do,” Alicia sighed. “Old man.”
Bucky shot her another ornery glare and grunted as the autopilot signaled their approach and began to facilitate landing. He barely managed to ignore the way she ran through the co-pilot checks in synchronicity with him, as if they’d always worked so closely.
As soon as they docked Bucky was up, out of his seat, and stalking down the ramp as if the hounds of hell were after him.
“Thanks, Sarge, good mission, great company,” Alicia called after him, with a barely audible “asshole” added at the end but, thanks to the damned serum, he heard it anyway.
Bucky sighed as he made his way to the locker room nearby before he stripped down, wanting to take a shower. He ran his hands over his face as he stood beneath the hot spray. Why couldn’t I fucking focus today?
It didn’t take him long to shower and get dressed but by the time he did the halls were dark and the tower was quiet aside from the sounds of Parker and Bishop arguing over some video game. They tried to teach it to him and it lasted about ten minutes before he almost threw the controller into the wall and stalked off. He made his way down to his quarters tossing his clothes into his room before heading into the small kitchen shared with the other rooms on this wing.
Flickers of red hair and blue eyes filled his mind, sending feelings swarming in his chest that he wasn't familiar with. Ones he didn't know how to deal with. She was a pain in his ass, tenfold but she could also fight and held her own against his unruly attitude.
Bucky reached for the bottle of whiskey on the top shelf of one of the cabinets and poured himself a glass.
Parking himself at the marble-top kitchen island with his drink and a bag of chips, Bucky laid the papers they recovered out in front of him. He wasn't going to sleep any time soon, never has done after a mission, even one so simple. His mind often reeled, flashbacks and what ifs and all the fears that he still harbored. They were training  young people to fight, to put themselves in danger and he couldn't help but feel responsible for them.
Settling in for the night, he looked over the documents, making notes for his report and draining one then two glasses of whiskey. It wasn't until he heard footsteps, soft and sleepy, padding into the kitchen that he realized he'd let himself zone out, get lost in his work.
Alicia rounded the island and made a beeline for a clean glass on the draining board. Bucky glanced up, noting her rumpled pajamas and ponytail, now loose and slept in, and silently pushed the bottle of whiskey towards her.
“Thanks,” she murmured, her voice rough from lack of sleep.
He huffed an acknowledgement and went back to staring at the paperwork, mindlessly swirling the amber liquid in his own glass.
A stool scraped across the floor and Alicia pulled herself up next to him, her head tilted as she perused the documents. He could smell her shampoo. The scent was…familiar, comforting, although he couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was. He found himself leaning closer to her and managed to pull back before he ended up with his nose buried in her scarlet ponytail.
“You should be asleep.” He muttered, glancing back down at the paperwork in front of him. The irony of that statement was he should be too. But lately the nights were long and a sick game of roulette on whether or not he’d get a peaceful sleep or be haunted by the nightmares of his past.
Alicia tufts softly and leans back against the stool. “And let you have all the fun?” She said with the corner of her mouth turned upward as she reached for another small stack of paperwork. “Don’t think so, Sarge.”
His eyes trailed to her profile. Button nose, pouty lips and eyes that even in the dark still seemed to shine a bright blue. “Can’t sleep, Ace?”
It was small and quick but he caught how her body tensed for a brief moment at his question. It was the first inclination he’s had outside of her smart mouth. “Still wired from the mission I guess.” She said softly trying to recover that brief moment of silence after a question like that and not knowing how to answer.
He was all too familiar with that.
"Wish I could tell you that feeling goes away," Bucky replied, taking a sip of his drink, "but you're lookin' at a man who'd rather bore himself with a mission report than close his eyes so I guess that tells you everythin' you need to know."
With her chin planted in the palm of her hand as she leant forward on the island, Alicia leveled him with a heavy stare before she bumped him softly on the shoulder.
"You want to play a game?" She asked quietly, not what Bucky was expecting. "Twenty questions or something?"
"Can't say I do, Ace."
"Ah, come on. It'll be more interesting than reading those for what, the twentieth time?"
"Fifteenth," Bucky murmured and Alicia cocked her head, pretty eyes knowing and convincing as hell.
He tried to ignore her stare and his jaw ticked as his face heated. A second passed, and another.
“Fine,” he huffed, shuffling around on his stool and taking a fortifying swig of liquor. “But I’m going first.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything less, Sarge. Fire away.”
Bucky hummed and took the opportunity to appraise her without having to pretend he wasn’t.
“Cute pyjamas,” he grunted. “They your favorite color?”
“No, it’s blue. Why do you drink if it doesn’t affect you?” She retorted, firing straight back with a question of her own.
Bucky grinned at the quickness of her question. "Reminds me of the old days and I like the taste."
"No one likes the taste." She quipped.
He chuckled, "you've had shit whiskey then. Favorite drink?"
"Tequila."
"Tequila? Like mixed with some--" His brows raised when she shook her head cutting off his question.
"Good old fashioned salt and lime." She smiled widely. "Does that surprise you?"
Bucky thought about it for a moment and shook his head. "No. You're quite the spitfire, it's actually...quite the match." He chuckled.
"Thank you," Alicia grinned, "when did you lose your virginity?"
Bucky blinked but rolled with it, "not pulling any punches, huh? 1933, Lucy Hargreaves. She was two years older and her Ma hated me."
"Ooh, why?" Alicia shifted in her seat, big eyes earnest and her lips curved in interest.
"Nice try, Ace, it's my turn," Bucky chuckled, reaching for a handful of chips and pushing the bag in her direction. He munched happily as he thought of another question, surprised by the way the load of tension in his shoulders was lightening and his whole body was turned towards Alicia now, open and comfortable.
“Tick tock, Sarge,” she teased, popping a chip into her mouth and firing a wink in his direction.
“Alright, alright. Why don’t you date?” He asked.
“I date,” Alicia protested, stiffening in her seat, her smile growing tight.
“Nah, you don’t. Or if you do it was before you moved in here. I ain’t seen you go out and there sure as hell ain’t been no-one havin’ a sleepover with you.”
“You keeping tabs on me, Barnes?” She grated awkwardly. “I didn’t realize you cared enough to notice.”
“I don’t, I mean, I do…I mean, not like that, I-“ Bucky blustered himself into a corner.
"Easy there," She said, grabbing his bicep. "Don't force yourself into a reboot."
Bucky took a deep breath and glanced over at her his own body tense under the weight of her touch. "I'm not a robot." He frowned which only made the soft smile on her features grow.
"Tell that to Wilson." she laughed and pulled her hand away and his heart fell with the loss of contact. "Who's turn is it?"
"Yours, and I feel like I'm gonna need more whiskey for this," Bucky muttered, topping up both of their glasses.
"Why don't you date?" Alicia asked and it sounded as sincere as it did in retaliation to his own question. He should have expected that really. Bucky screwed his face up and gulped back his drink, wishing it would affect him for once.
"I just don't," he replied, "next question."
"Woah, no. I'm not letting you get away with that one, Sarge," Alicia said quickly. "Give me one honest reason why you don't, just one?"
"You've met me," Bucky shrugged, a poor excuse for an answer and clearly not the one Alicia was expecting as her face fell.
"What is that supposed to mean?" He saw her face contort into a mixture between contained anger and utter despair as she voiced her question, her voice going an octave louder in the silence.
She didn't wait for him to form a response to her question, not that he had much to say. He knew how people looked at him.
"Sarge! You may be a pain in my ass and also excel in riding my ass in training but," there was quiet determination in her eyes that had the chuckle that threatened to slip from him die down.
"You're kind, and smart, and you care about us. Your team.. your family."
Bucky tried to swallow down but it felt like his throat closed up. He didn't dare look her in the eyes even as her icy pools swept over his face.
"Anyone would be lucky to have you," she shrugged. Alicia's voice was much softer now as a tinge of red spread across her face and she turned away from him, picking up her drink.
"Anyone who makes you think otherwise is a fool." She ended quietly while avoiding his eyes and took a large gulp of the amber liquid.
“You been keepin’ tabs on me, Ace?” He managed to croak, ending on a chuckle that sounded forced even to him.
Alicia huffed a little and picked at the rim of her glass with one finger.
“I used to hate that nickname you know,” she muttered. “Always felt like you were putting me down, belittling me, like I wasn’t good enough for the famous Avengers.” Bucky opened his mouth to apologize but she waved her hand to cut him off. “I said I used to. Don’t mind it so much anymore.”
“Why?” Bucky asked, conscious of the tension that was building; like the air before a thunderstorm.
“‘Cause you’re the only one that uses it,” she admitted, looking across at him, a flush creeping across her cheeks.
"Everyone needs a nickname." He muttered feeling those butterflies swarm in his belly again. Her eyes flickered up to his and it was like a bolt of lightning struck him.
"You don't have nicknames for the others." She said quietly with a hint of hopefulness that sent his heart into a frenzy. He did, but they weren't nice and mainly consisted of picking on Parker. "You also don't ride the others as hard as you do me in training."
"What are you gettin' at Ace?" He asked softly, picking at the label on the whiskey bottle trying to avoid looking at her because if he did again, if he found those ice blue eyes he was going to be a goner and she was one thing he wasn't going to allow himself to ruin.
Alicia let out a breath. "I just think maybe you don't dislike me as much as you put off."
Bucky huffed out a soft chuckle, half hating that she’d put the words out there and half pleased he didn’t have to say them himself.
“You’re—” he paused and dared to glance up, forcing himself to look ahead at the kitchen cabinets but even seeing her blurred in his peripherals was almost too much.
“I’m what, Sarge?”
“You’re somethin’ else, Ace.”
The laugh that left her lips was surprised, melodic and a hint of delight danced across her features as Bucky felt that sound hit somewhere deep in his chest. A cascade of feelings he didn't want to put a name to yet filled him.
His hand twitched to rub at his chest where his heart was but he forced himself to only grip the glass in his hand, if a little tighter than before.
"I'll take that as a compliment, Sarge." She said after her laugh had gently faded. A quick wink following.
“You should,” he said, tossing back the last gulp of whiskey and pouring himself another helping.
“I’ll take another, too.”
“Compliment, or whiskey?” He asked, making the mistake of actually looking directly at her.
“Both?” She grinned, sliding her glass towards him. “Although if you carry on with the compliments I’m gonna start to think you actually like me.”
Bucky froze. It was only for a split second but he knew Alicia had noticed. Cursing himself he tried to downplay his reaction but it was no use.
“Sarge?” She asked quietly, warily, almost…hopefully?
He didn’t respond and when she reached to retrieve her whiskey she stilled him by wrapping her fingers around his on the glass.
“Bucky?”
Bucky's entire body tensed at the feeling of her warm soft skin.
"Bucky." She said again and this time he cleared his throat with a nod but his gaze remained on their hands. Her fingers loosened their grip on his hand but lingered there for a moment before they trailed up his wrist.
"What are you doing?" He asked, his voice low and raspy as he tried to calm his racing heart.
"Is that one of your questions?" She asked just as softly.
Bucky's gaze finally found hers and he nodded.
"I'm testing something." Alicia whispered.
His brows furrowed in confusion as her hand crawled slowly up his arm until it stopped just below his elbow. "When was the last time you kissed someone?" She asked softly.
“Couldn’t tell you,” Bucky murmured, unsure if he liked the new way his heart was thrumming hard and fast against his rib cage. It wasn’t the scared thundering he was used to, no overwhelming roar in his ears this time.
His breath hitched as Alicia’s hand traveled further, up to his bicep where her fingertips pressed lightly into the muscle. Bucky glanced down and he found himself unable to tear his eyes away from how she was holding onto him, warm and gentle and foreign to him now.
“What would you do if I were to kiss you now?”
“Alicia.” If he meant it to be a warning, it didn’t come out that way. Her name sounded soft on his lips, a breath of syllables rolling off his tongue in a way he rather liked.
"Tell me," her voice was breathy, soft even though her breathing was starting to turn a little shallow in front of him.
He couldn't help it, couldn't control the way his hand let go of the glass it held and inched its way closer to her while the other clenched and whirred under the strain of his nerves. Both their eyes tracked the movement before locking on each other's faces.
Alicia's face was flushed under his gaze, inching slightly closer to him with every breath she took.
"I think..." he hesitated. "I would kiss you back."
The confession hung heavy in the air they shared, Bucky's eyes tracing her face as he dared to touch her back and placed his hand on the curve of her hip and felt her breath hitch.
Alicia was so delicate underneath his careful touch.
"Can I kiss you, Bucky?"
His tongue darted out to dampen his bottom lip and he drew in a shaky breath. “Y-yeah.”
Her hand on his bicep moved again sliding gently upward to curl around the back of his neck, her thumb stroking tenderly along the curve of his jaw. His pulse thrummed beneath her fingers, which tightened with the smallest amount of pressure to draw him forwards.
“You’re gonna have to meet me halfway, big guy,” she whispered, her mouth curving into a smile as she leaned towards him.
He wouldn’t have been able to stop himself even if he’d wanted to, bending his head down to her, and then her lips were pressed against his so delicately that he almost didn’t believe it was happening. He felt the slight tremble in her kiss, as if her heart were beating as fast as his. If he concentrated he could actually hear it, pounding out a desperate rhythm.
Knowing that she was just as nervous or anxious as he was made him feel less like a hundred year old who couldn’t remember the last time he kissed someone and more like a man desperate for touch.
He slid his arm around her waist turning fully into her and took her top lip between his deepening the kiss until by sheer instinct he pulled her closer.
Alicia whimpered slightly as his arm wrapped around her and it forced him to break the kiss, wide eyes and terrified that he had done something to hurt her. “Why did you stop?” She breathed, her breath warm against his.
“Did I hurt you?” He said the words tight and strained.
The warmest smile spread over her face as she shook her head. “No, but I can take it.” She whispered.
This made him chuckle and nod softly as he dipped his head once more. “Okay tough guy.” He rasped before slotting his lips over hers once again.
As they kissed, Alicia toyed with the soft tufts of hair at the nape of his neck, longer than usual just like she'd pointed out earlier, but the fizz of warmth it sent through him as she twirled the strands around her fingers made him reluctant to even think about cutting it now.
Alicia sighed, her lips parting further and presenting Bucky with the chance to lick into her mouth, taste the whiskey and chips on her tongue. He groaned into it, his fingers dancing over her sides until he had a tight but gentle grasp on her waist.
"Hold on, Ace," he murmured into her mouth, giving her the barest warning before he hauled her out of her stool and onto his lap. The gleeful yelp that escaped her pulled out a laugh, loud and full as his nose scrunched in delight. And then he dove straight back in, too deep now to stop kissing her for even a second.
Little moans escaped her mouth and right into his as Bucky's hunger grew with each swipe of tongue against one another. His skin felt on fire as heated blood rushed through his veins.
It was too much and not enough all at once, his hands roved over every inch he could reach and reveled in the way her back arched into him. Her arms wound around his neck to pull herself closer to him.
Bucky pulled back from her mouth only to trail his lips and tongue down her jaw, letting her breathe while he nipped and kissed his way to a spot below her ear that had her gasping the air right back out.
"Oh god.."
Both his hands tightened on Alicia's hips at the sultry sound. It echoed in his ears again as he repeated the motion.
“Mmm…” Bucky nipped and licked down her neck before sucking gently on her pulse. When he pulled back he grinned, seeing her eyes blown wide with lust and arousal. “Wow…”
He let his gaze drop, taking in her little pyjamas properly now she was so close. His eyes fell to her vest top first, so thin he could see the way her nipples pebbled beneath the fabric, and then the little slither of her belly, pale and soft in the dim light of the kitchen.
Bucky swallowed thickly, shivered as Alicia trailed her own hands down his chest until they settled between them, where her legs straddled him, all tiny plaid shorts and bare flesh against the rough denim of his jeans. When he finally dragged his eyes back up to meet hers, still dark, still full of wanting, Alicia fluttered her long eyelashes and flashed him a cheeky little smirk.
"Mind if I move, Sarge?" She whispered and Bucky groaned. His grip on her tightening as he gave her a short nod of affirmation, sucking in a breath at the sudden and torturously slow grind of her hips.
“God,” Bucky gritted out, his hand sliding up to palm her breast through her top, his thumb stroking over her pebbled nipple.
A low moan slipped past her lips and he caught it with his own, teasing into her mouth with his tongue. It was Alicia who tugged down the front of her own top and suddenly there was the tender heat of her bare flesh beneath his palm, a counterpoint to the friction of her core grinding against the straining tent in his jeans.
He shifted on the stool, barely managing to contain the urge to rut against her and desperately trying to control the strength of his grip on her waist as he held her close.
Heat licked at his belly as he nipped at her bottom lip, earning himself another moan dripping from her plump kiss bitten lips. Bucky slid his free hand up her back, tangling it in her hair as she rolled her hips again. It was driving him crazy. She was driving him crazy. Every tiny movement, every sigh, every whimper it all sent a thrill straight to his cock.
His palm squeezed gently around her breast, molding it to his hand as her head fell back, a soft moan escaping her before she lifted her head with a soft grin. Her lips formed into a smirk before she rocked harder once and dipped her head to nip along his jawline.
"Fuck, Alicia-- sweetheart," Bucky choked out, his own head lolling to the side to give her better access to his skin. He could feel her mouthing hotly at his neck, forming a bruise that wouldn't be there come morning; a real shame if you asked him.
His hands skimmed her body, trying to touch every inch of her, feel her strength and her softness under his fingertips. Every gorgeous bit of her that had him writhing in his seat, trying so hard to keep it together.
"You can let go, you know. If it feels good," she whispered and Bucky stuttered out a groan and a series of soft grunts as he helped her hips keep up a steady pace that drove them both someplace higher, teetering on the edge of pleasure.
Her teeth nipped at his ear with hot breath and whispered, "keep going."
All of it was enough to push him over the edge, soaking the inside of his boxers and jeans. He desperately needed her to come too and it wasn't far behind him that her body softly shuddered in his arms. A series of soft praises flew from her mouth as she pressed her lips into his neck sending a chill down his spine. There were a few moments of silence that settled between them. The sounds of their breathing filled the kitchen area.
"One more question?" He said softly wrapping his arms around her as she melted into his chest.
"What's that?" She said softly.
"Will you...I mean would you like to maybe go out sometime?" He said softly as she lifted her head.
Alicia smiled warmly and nodded. "I'd like that."
A throat cleared behind them. Bucky's eyes darted to the door seeing Sam standing in the doorway with a shit eating grin. Embarrassment flooded him and his cheeks turned a soft shade of pink as Alicia fixed her top and slowly slid off of his lap. "I'll leave you two to it." She grinned and disappeared down the hallway.
Bucky leaned forward against the counter, adjusting his jeans underneath it.
"Pain in your ass huh?" Sam smirked, reaching for the whiskey.
"Shut up Sam." Bucky groaned and slid out from the counter and shoved past him down towards his quarters leaving Sam chuckling in the kitchen. The moment he was alone, he slipped out of his pants and boxers, finding new ones and crawled into bed. Red hair, blue eyes and perfectly pouty lips flooding his thoughts as his eyes grew heavy and he dreamed of the girl two doors down.

The Amelia County Fairgrounds were always busy the night of a rodeo. With not much else to do, residents of Wabang paid five bucks a ticket to come watch cowboys from all over compete for the grand prize in their category — and the chance to move on to the next stage in the season.
As one of the main draws for the town, the rodeo coordinators made sure the place looked nice. Bulb lights strung up around the concessions area and outdoor riding pit. Turned on long before the sun went down and kept that way long after it set. Concessions were always well stocked with the usual fair commodities; deep fried anything and nachos mostly. Any kind of souvenir you could think of was available at what was most likely a jacked-up price. Sweatshirts and stetsons, big belt buckles and necklaces on twine for a bit of Western flair. And of course, they made sure every event was easy for those out-of-towners to find. Pole bending and barrel racing in the barn pavilions on the east side — bull riding and calf roping in the main arena.
The fairgrounds were teeming with life by the time Tessa paid for her ticket and walked inside. A sea of cowboy hats and trucker caps weaving amongst themselves. Getting their popcorn and trying to decide what events to watch. Tessa smiled, taking it all in for a moment. The loud chatter and country music, smells of deep-fried Oreos and leather. It had been so long since she was able to go to a rodeo. Her work schedule was so busy and on her days off she usually had personal chores that needed taking care of.
Not tonight, though. Tonight, she was at the rodeo without a worry in her mind. And it felt relaxing in some way, despite the noise and the energy of the place. A smile overcame her as she weaved her way through the people, toward the funnel cake stand.
She knew without a doubt that she would beat Riley there. No matter what her friend did, she was always late. Didn’t matter the pre-planning or promises to be on time or even early. But she always showed up — even if it was fifteen to twenty minutes late every time. Maybe Tessa would get a funnel cake to occupy her time.
But as she walked, hands shoved in her Carhartt pockets, she bumped into someone. Her shoulder knocked into their arm, throwing off her balance. A hand shot out to steady her.
“Oh, m’sorry!” she apologized immediately, looking up into their face.
It was Royal Abbott. All hard lines and furrowed brows. His goatee beard greyed and hiding a frown. Hat pulled low over his brown eyes that looked down at her now with an expression she couldn’t quite read. She could see Rhett in him clearly, even more so now than when they were in high school. They held that same kind of quiet, that same kind of hardness. For a moment, as she looked up at him wide-eyed, all she could think about was Linda’s story — but then it quickly faded from her mind. Because that’s all it was. A story.
Royal let go of her elbow with a grunt.
“No problem. How’s your dad doin’?” he asked courteously, voice a rough gravel low in his throat.
Tessa was taken aback. She didn’t think he would remember her, much like his son. She also didn’t think he would remember her father’s surgery a few years ago. But then again, the ranchers of cattle and horses alike in Wabang were a tight-knit group. Chatting at feed stores and bars, sitting down over cups of coffee at Odessa’s with hats on the table and dirt under their fingernails. Hard-working men, each and every one.
“He’s like a new man since the knee replacement,” she replied with a small grin.
“Glad t’hear it.” Royal glanced around the rodeo grounds. “You still doin’ any racin’?”
“Nah, I quit after high school.”
“Shame, y’were good.”
Tessa didn’t know how to respond to that. And never did. Everyone in Wabang always said that. That she was good, that she shouldn’t have given it up. But just because she was talented didn’t mean she wanted to do it forever. She had other goals she wanted to achieve. And riding in rodeos every weekend, traveling all the time, would have prevented her from doing the things she really wanted to do. There were more important things than blue ribbons and curving barrels. She didn’t want that to be her life.
“Well, good t’see ya, kid. Tell y’r mom and dad I said hi.” Royal patted her on the shoulder with a closed-lip smile. “Have’a good night.”
“Thanks, you too,” she said.
Then he walked away, towards the trailers where the bull riders liked to hang out before their appointed time slots. Tessa’s heart seemed to skip a beat as she watched him for a moment. Right. Rhett would be here tonight. He might see her this time, give her a wave or even a smile. She wanted to slap herself.
Now that they what? Talked once? Jesus Christ. It was like she was suddenly fourteen again and going weak in the knees at the mere sight of him. She was better than that. Had grown past that. They were adults now. It didn’t matter that he was still cute and it didn’t matter that her stomach was no filled with the flapping of wings. She wouldn’t fall for it again. It hurt too much all those years ago to let it.
Tessa shook her head and got in line for funnel cake.
After tearing through nearly a fourth of the deep-fried fair food, fingers sticky, and lips covered in powdered sugar, Riley finally arrived. Bumping into her friend’s shoulder from behind with a grin. Riley looked as beautiful as ever. No need for makeup that she never wanted to put on anyway. Hair dark and curly, laying on her shoulders softly. She stood nearly a head taller than Tessa, confident with shoulders back and a smirk on her face. They laughed and embraced, Tessa trying not to get funnel cake everywhere as they swayed from side to side and spouted their I missed yous. It really had been too long since they were able to see each other.
“I jus’don’t see why ya recommended this whole book series t’me for her t’not end up with Dara,” Riley said as they headed east towards the barn pavilions.
Tessa held up the funnel cake between them so they could share. “Because it’s good. I like her’n Ali together.”
“It is good — but…Dara could’ve at least stayed!”
“Did ya cry?” Tessa questioned with a small smile.
Riley looked straight ahead, eyes narrowed. “Maybe a little.”
“I was ballin’ m’eyes out after I finished the last one.”
“‘Course you were.” Riley smiled as they passed by the trailers used for hauling bulls. “At three AM?”
“You know it,” Tessa laughed.
And she was about to go on, tell the story of how she sat and stared at the wall for a good ten minutes before she could go on with the book’s epilogue, when she ran directly into a solid chest. Her face smashed into their torso, now empty funnel cake plate clattering to the ground. The liquid heat of embarrassment licked at her cheeks as she stumbled back a bit.
How many people was she going to run into today?
“Sorry! I — sorry, I — I thought y’saw me,” a quiet, low voice rumbled out as a hand grabbed her elbow to steady her.
Tessa knew that voice. Had heard it only a few days before on the front porch of the Boy’s Home. That sting and that thrill ran through her like a dam was just broken — the river rushing down her spine as she looked up into his face. Rhett Abbott’s face. Eyes big and blue, darkened by the fading light. A small smile quirked the corner of his mouth. He wore green plaid and his riding vest, chaps slung low around his hips, and stetson perched on his head. He somehow looked even better like this. In his element. Rough and ready — the dirt kicked up from the pit already clinging to his sweaty face.
How many Abbotts was she going to run into today?
“I-I didn’t. Sorry,” she finally managed to answer, clearing her throat as she looked down at his boots.
Rhett ran his thumb over her bicep before letting go of her arm. “S’alright. How ya doin’?”
Tessa glanced over at Riley. Who stood off to the side looking between the two of them with raised, intrigued brows. She had yet to mention that she talked to Rhett a few days before. That she suddenly remembered her crush and her heartache and just how handsome he still was. That he smiled when he said her name and it made her heart race just like when she was fourteen.
That she felt her heart beating wildly at that very moment as she looked back up at Rhett. No. She wouldn’t act like she did back then. In school when it felt like if anyone even so much as looked at her she wanted to die. Retreating in on herself as self-preservation, taking no risks, staying invisible. Tessa knew intimately the kind of regret that could grow from that seed. They would talk for a few minutes and then move on with their lives. It was just like talking with anyone else.
“Good.” Lifting her head, she smiled — and he blinked at her, his own grin only growing. “Had the day off n’Riley invited me. Should be fun.”
“Good, good…” he trailed off, fingers fidgeting with the frays of his chaps.
“You? How you been?” she asked, remembering her manners.
“Fine, jus’workin’.” Rhett wiped at his mouth, as he shifted his weight. “Um, I’ride in about an hour…If ya wanna watch.”
“‘Course! Wouldn’t wanna miss local boy Rhett Abbott ride,” she laughed and he looked down at his feet. “Just gonna catch a bit’a the barrel racin’. Used to do that in — “
“I know,” Rhett said, something sincere and open in his face. “I — I remember.”
No matter how much she didn’t want to feel it, she couldn’t stop the sweet burn of being remembered in some way from piercing her heart.
“Well, uh — see ya in an hour, I guess.” Tessa grinned, inching away towards Riley so they could start walking away from him and away from the building heat in her chest.
“There’s gonna be a bonfire. After. Out in the east pasture. You — “ He glanced at Riley and blinked hard as if suddenly remembering she was even there. “You guys should come.”
The fire crackled and burned, flames licking at the inky black sky. Smoke rose in ringlets and danced up, up, up to the stars. Ashes landed on her lap — the final resting place of the logs used to fuel the flame. In the darkness just beyond the fire’s light, young people mingled and danced to the portable radio someone had brought. Drinks were passed around. Stories and laughter were shared. And Tessa stared into the flames, unable to look away even though her face felt like it was burning hot.
Really, she just didn’t want to see Rhett Abbott or the girl he had walked off into the woods with.
She knew, deep down somewhere, that there was never any chance. That he would never notice her. Who was she kidding, getting her hopes up? Why would he take any interest in the quiet girl who preferred horses to people and sat alone at bonfires — too afraid her drunk friends would get out of hand for her to even drink? But no matter how much she tried to think logically. About him being none-the-wiser and how she could barely speak two words to him anyway. Her heart still ached. Tears still built in her eyes, smearing the roaring flame into blurred shapes of orange and yellow.
What she wasn’t willing to admit to herself, however, was that she didn’t care that it was Rhett. That it was Olivia Barlow who had taken his hand with a soft giggle and a bit lip smile. That they were probably off in the woods swapping spit or more. It didn’t matter that it was Rhett and it didn’t matter that it was Olivia. It just wasn’t her.
Because really, in her heart of hearts, Tessa just wanted to be wanted.
And that was all.
“We’ll think about it,” Riley answered for them with a closed-mouth smile. “Come on, we’re gonna miss the racin’.”
Then she took Tessa’s elbow and pulled her away. Scooping up the dropped plate as she went. Tessa looked back at Rhett one more time, who had turned to watch them leave — expression unreadable. So much like his father. But his blue eyes shone like gems in the dying light of day.
“The hell was that?” Riley questioned in a harsh whisper, tossing the paper plate into the nearest trash bin.
“I don’know.” Tessa shrugged, funnel cake suddenly wanting to make a reappearance.
“Y’r face is givin’ you away. Y’re all red.”
With a groan, Tessa told her friend the whole story. About the clothing donation and Rhett not remembering her and their small conversation on the porch. How it was nice and she didn’t think much of it besides how pleased her inner fourteen-year-old self felt. And by the time her tale was finished, Tessa going over their parting words, they had entered the barn pavilion where their high school graduation was held. Only now it was filled to the brim with a captive audience, barrels set up on the show floor, and a young girl on a black mare curving around them at high speeds.
“That’s it — so, I’don’know, I’guess we’re friends now?” Tessa felt like she was shouting, struggling to be heard over the crowd as they cheered on the racer. “S’just one conversation.”
Riley took the lead in going up into the stands. They sat down at the end of a row with a good view of the show floor. The black mare and her rider had just finished, the girl waving to the crowd as she trotted off back into the stables. Her smile was small and tight. Tessa looked at the scoreboard, and it made sense. She only ever smiled like that when she didn’t do as well as she wanted, too.
“Up next, Addie Zoglmann from Deadwood, South Dakota!” the announcer spoke over the crackling speaker.
“Well, he clearly doesn’t wanna be jus’friends with ya,” Riley said, eyes focused on the barrels getting reset for the next rider.
“What?” Tessa blinked owlishly at her.
“Oh, com’on, Tess, seriously? Could literally see the hearts’n his eyes.”
“We talked once!”
“Yeah, n’ he finally realized y’re beautiful n’ kind n’ smart an’ve been here the whole time.”
Heat pooled in Tessa’s cheeks at the compliments, barely believing them. “Shut up. Y’ve been readin’ too many romance books.”
“At the very least he wants in y’r pants,” she muttered.
“Riley, oh, my God! He does not!”
“He does too. Could see it clear as day. ‘Cause, ya know, I had’a front row seat t’that — “ She gestured in front of herself. “Whole interaction.”
The heat only grew, spilling down her neck as she hid her face in her hands. The announcer called the next rider’s number and she blasted out of the chute, hunched low over her horse’s neck and spurring her on even faster. Rounding the first barrel with ease.
“Was it really that bad?” Tessa finally mumbled quietly through her fingers.
“S’like a fuckin’ train wreck. Couldn’t stop watchin’.”
“Oh, God.”
“And Jesus Christ, too,” Riley added.
They both laughed, Tessa drawing her hands away from her face. She didn’t know if she fully believed what Riley said. That Rhett looked…Interested in her. To her, it just felt like a slightly awkward conversation between acquaintances. Not even friends.
Did she want him to be interested? Did she want him to look at her with hearts in his eyes and like he wanted to get in her pants? If anything, it was most likely the latter. She knew about his reputation. Mostly from the rumors that Laney liked to gossip about. The buckle bunnies and the drinking. But Tessa knew to take any story that Laney brought up with a grain of salt. Or a lot of salt really. The grapevine in Wabang did wonders or criminal offenses to a person’s reputation. And sure, maybe he did sleep around and maybe he did drink a little too much, but she could see good in him. Something quiet but earnest. So different from the boy she was infatuated with in high school. Now he was a man she barely knew and had spoken with twice. How could she possibly know if she would want his attention?
But the attention he had given her so far felt nice. Felt like she was special. An anomaly he couldn’t quite figure out but was determined to do so. It felt something like being wanted.
What she still so desperately craved. Even after all these years, even after so much growth. She still looked at her sister’s relationship with a pang of envy. She still looked at her coworker, alone and bitter, and feared it was her fate.
She still yearned to be wanted — and to want in return.
A few more riders shot across the show floor. An impressive display of power and speed as they turned sharply around the barrels, trying to do it faster than everyone before them. The energy of the pavilion, the crowd, the event on the floor — it was electric. Everyone cheered loudest for the local girls. All of whom Tessa knew, some even from her days on the rodeo team. Screaming their names and stamping their feet on the metal stands.
But Tessa and Riley couldn’t stay to watch first place get her ribbon. Addie Zoglmann from South Dakota. They had to start making their way over to the main, outdoor arena in order to catch Rhett Abbott’s ride. She said she wasn’t going to miss it. And Tessa liked to keep her word.
“You think we should go t’the bonfire?” Tessa questioned as they walked, paying extra-close attention so she wouldn’t run into anyone else.
“I don’know. Wadda you wanna do?” Riley asked back as she popped a piece of gum in her mouth.
“Not make a decision right now.” Her answer was honest, delivered with a sighing laugh that made her friend affectionately roll her dark eyes.
“Yeah, alright.” Riley added another piece of gum to her mouth. “We’ll go f’r a minute, check it out, at least. Please y’r lil’ lover boy.”
Tessa made a face. “Ugh, don’call him my lover boy.”
“Jus’ callin’ it as I see it,” she laughed.
“Yeah, well, he’s not so…” Tessa trailed off, looking south to the riding pit and the rodeo clowns herding the bull back into the pen.
It was just a joke. Tessa knew that. But it didn’t stop something from aching deep in her chest.
“But he could be,” Riley pointed out gently, “If ya’d jus’loosen up and stop thinkin’ so negative about y’rself.”
That was another thing about Riley Lopez. She always told the people she cared about the truth. Even if they didn’t want to hear it. Tessa glared up at her, though there was no real bite behind it, as they ascended the stairs up into the stands. Riley only grinned down at her before taking the lead to find them a seat.
“Alright folks, here’s number three-one-six — Rhett Abbott — on Bones!” the announcer called.
Tessa and Riley stood up as they cheered, along with a few others in the crowd. Including Rhett’s family. His mom and dad, his older brother Perry and his wife, Tessa couldn’t remember her name, and their daughter. A little blonde girl Tessa saw getting picked up from school from time to time when she was there to get one of the boys. They cheered for Rhett loudly with thunderous claps. That little girl screaming loudest of all for her uncle. It made Tessa smile.
The gate burst open as the timer buzzed its starting and the bull jumped into the riding pit. Dust went flying into the air as the great hooves stomped into the earth. The Abbott family continued to cheer and encourage. Tessa waited on bated breath. She always hated watching the bull riding. During one high school rodeo, some poor Nebraska boy got his chest stomped in. She could still hear the collective gasp, the crunching of bone, the parents’ screams. The boy lived, with a metal plate in his chest and a hobble for the rest of his life, but the memory wasn’t something that Tessa could shake herself of easily. Saw it flash before her eyes even then as the bull groaned furiously and did everything it could to shake Rhett off. But he was glued to the bull’s back with his hand raised high above his head. Rocking with each movement, with each spin. His face turned down, focused on the bull's neck.
But it wasn’t enough. With only five seconds on the clock, Rhett was thrown from the bull. Tumbling off the back and landing on his spine with a great cloud of dust.
“Yikes, bet that hurt,” Riley muttered.
Tessa didn’t reply. Too focused on Rhett still laying in the dirt. His hat had been thrown off. Laid several feet away from him as he stared up at the sky. No doubt the wind had been knocked out of him. His lungs struggling from the shock. Bones had already stamped away and was now being herded back into the chute for Rhett’s second ride. Then he slammed his fist into the ground — frustrated — and he sat up. The crowd cheered quietly at the fact he was alright. He rose to his feet and nodded at the crowd with a closed-mouth smile, something similar to the one Tessa would give when she knew she didn’t do well, then picked up his hat.
“Nothin’ he’s not used to, I’guess,” Tessa sighed, feeling like her heart was trying to beat right out of her chest.
They sat back down as the next rider was announced. Rhett wouldn’t go again until the other ten riders before him had gone. Out of the corner of her eye, Tessa saw Royal Abbott heading down from the stands and towards the pen where the bull riders were held in waiting.
So far, Rhett wasn’t even on the leaderboard. And Tessa remembered all too well that, despite his father’s encouragement and applause, his boy was never doing enough.
She walked proudly through the rodeo grounds with that first-place ribbon pinned to her shirt. It was big and blue and glossy, shining underneath the lights. She was just glad her whole family could make it to this one. Even Rachel got to see her ride, though she seemed a little less than impressed and could really only comment on how dirty her pants had gotten.
The grounds were quiet, the animals all rounded up and put in their trailers for the drive home, and only a few other contestants milled around. But she forgot her bag in the stables again, and she didn’t want to leave everyone waiting. Shiloh had a baby on her hip after all, one that was downright exhausted and whiney.
Passing by the riding pit on her way, she saw Rhett Abbott standing at the metal fence with his head down — hands shoved into his jean pockets like he was trying to hide as much of himself as possible. And from the way his father was looming over him, she could understand why. Royal had his hat in his hand, gesturing out into the riding pit and talking in a low quiet voice. Worse than getting yelled at. Getting talked to.
Rhett glanced at her as she walked past. A red ribbon stood out in stark contrast to his black riding vest. She only caught a fragment of what Royal was saying.
“Are ya even takin’ this seriously? By the time I was y’r age I was placin’ first every time…”
Disappointment disguised as encouragement. Harsh words spoken by a well-intended father.
Tessa kept on walking.
Bones was back in the chute and Rhett was slowly lowering himself onto his wide back. The bull screamed and jerked within the metal bars. Rhett slipped his gloved hand around the handle, wrapped the rope tight around his knuckles and pounded his hand into a fist around it all. A tight grip, sealing him to the bull completely. Tessa and Riley got back to their feet.
“Rhett Abbott, number three-one-six, with his second ride of the evening.”
The timer buzzed and the gate flung open just as the bull leaped into the air. Bones spun in circles, kicking his back legs, tilting himself nearly vertically to try and get Rhett off. And for a moment, hand clutching at Riley’s jacket sleeve, she thought it was enough. That he was going to stay on just long enough and get onto the leaderboard.
At seven seconds, however, Rhett fell. Caught himself on his right wrist as Bones stamped dangerously close to his head. Tessa gasped. That was so close. Billy from Nebraska all over again only ten times worse.
“That sucks. Wh’t’s that mean, Tess?” Riley questioned as she sat back down.
But Tessa waited until Rhett got back to his feet. Until he was being herded away by the rodeo guys, shaking out his wrist. He didn’t smile at the crowd. Kept his head down and the brim of his stetson covering his face.
Only then did she sit back down on the cold metal stands. “Means his season’s over. He’s not advancin’.”
“Oh, that really sucks.”
“Yeah. I’does.”
Rhett hiked his leg over the metal fence and swung over to the other side. He didn’t walk back to the holding pen. Instead, he headed straight for the medical tent. Not giving anyone a second glance.

The pasture east just beyond the Amelia County Fairgrounds was a dark sea of freshly cut forage. Cast in shades of blue by the moon hung waxing high in the sky. The stars bright and bountiful, like an audience gathered to watch the show going ever on and on upon the earth so far below.
All was quiet now that the rodeo was over. The hanging bulb lights had been turned off and the animals were all asleep in their pens, waiting to be transported home. Only a few vehicles remained in the lot. Scattered about the edges. The show was winding down.
Until a bright orange light sparked to life in the east pasture. Warm and intriguing. Just beyond the windrows and back by the edge of the forest. A whoop and a holler echoed through the empty blue as the light expanded. Illuminating all the cars and trucks that had driven through the field to get close.
Soon enough, music kicked up with a round of applause. Luke Bryan and Kenny Chesney — stuff good for dancing close and singing along to while drinking too much.
A classic Dirty Bang Bonfire was starting up. The stars settled in for the show — shown just that bit brighter in the infinite Wyoming sky. This was going to be fun.
Tessa couldn’t help but have dissimilar thoughts as she got out of her car and approached the already roaring flames. Stuck close to Riley’s side, who seemed calm and self-assured, Tessa wished she felt the same. Instead, her insides rolled with nerves and her palms accumulated a layer of sweat she kept having to wipe off. Parties like this were never her style.
“Maybe we shouldn’t’ve come,” she spoke quietly as they hovered on the edge of the gathering.
She knew every face cast in orange light. All of them people they went to high school with and had stuck around their little town. Talking in their little groups with drinks in hand. Groups that didn’t intermingle with theirs in high school. It just seemed like everyone had their place. Everyone knew where they fit — except for Tessa and Riley.
Except Tessa in truth. Riley was good in a crowd. Always had been. While Tessa stayed glued to the background. Set decoration. Preferring to observe rather than participate out of fear. Fear of what she wasn’t quite sure of anymore. Did she really care all that much about what these people thought of her anymore? She supposed she didn’t. But old habits died hard it seemed as her heart pounded in her chest at the thought of just mere mingling.
“Just a few minutes,” Riley said with a shrug, hands shoved in her jacket pockets. “We’ll grab’a drink from one’a the coolers layin’ around. Talk some shit. Then we’ll leave. Easy.”
“Easy,” Tessa hummed in reply as she looked around.
The Tillersons were there. All grouped up by the fire with a girl under each of their arms. They were all laughing about some story that Billy was telling. Everyone except the girl with Trevor, who just looked uncomfortable. And Tessa couldn’t blame her. A shiver, sharp as ice, went down her spine at the thought of being under that arm. Of remembering what that felt like. Being so important but so worthless at the same time.
Shania Lovegrove was there. She was pregnant again, sipping what Tessa really hoped was a juice. Her fourth at twenty-three with her third baby daddy. Tessa understood why her parents spoke so sadly about her now. She hoped that those kids were okay.
Walker Browning was sitting on the tailgate of his truck, beer in hand. Laney nowhere in sight. Right. They broke up again recently. Some squabble about when they were finally going to get married. Laney wanted it now. Walker wanted it in a few years. But Tessa and really everyone else in town knew that it was inevitable they would get back together. Again. It was a never-ending cycle with those two.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Riley’s lips stretch into a smile, her dark eyes focused on something over Tessa’s shoulder. Tessa opened her mouth to question such a wicked grin, but then Riley took hold of her shoulder and turned her to face the other direction.
Rhett Abbott was approaching them. He was no longer wearing his riding vest or chaps, but a brace now adorned his right wrist. A big silver buckle shown in the firelight at the top of his jeans. His smile was small and shy as he walked up to her, face still ruddy and dirty from his ride.
“You see me this time?” he joked quietly as he came to a stop in front of her.
She laughed, genuine, with her hands in her pockets. “Yeah, I do. Promise I’won’t slam inta’ya this time, either.”
“Okay,” he chuckled lightly, then he gestured in the direction he came from. “Wanna drink?”
“Yeah, we — “
Tessa looked behind her to loop Riley in, only Riley was nowhere to be found. Her heart dropped into her stomach. Of course. Time alone with her lover boy. With the hearts in his eyes, just now noticing her. Tessa really had been hoping, if they were to run into each other at the bonfire, that Riley could act as a buffer. An escape plan. But there she was. Alone with Rhett Abbott of all people. Who only a few days ago didn’t even know she was still in town. Who forgot her first name. That still left a sting, something sharp and bitter on her tongue. Something clarifying.
She turned back to Rhett with a closed mouth smile. Her cheeks burning and praying he wouldn’t notice.
“A drink sounds nice.”
They both turned and started walking together at the very edge of the bonfire’s light.
“How was uh — how’s the barrel racin’?” he asked.
“I’s’fun! Haven’t gotten’ta watch any racin’ in a long time, so…” she trailed off and smiled up at him.
Rhett smirked back for a second then looked away, down at the ground. “Ya miss it?”
“Sometimes,” she replied, “But anytime I get a hankerin’ I jus’run a demo at my parent’s ranch.”
“Get all those tourists gawkin’ at ya,” he chuckled.
“I mean, little girls starin’ at me like m’Wonder Woman or somethin’ is pretty good f’r my ego,” she said with a joking lilt and they both laughed.
His hand brushed against her arm and she tried not to notice.
In the back of some dirty blue GMC was a case of Heinekens. Rhett took one out of the case and opened it on the tailgate, handing it to her with foam still running down the side. He took out another and opened it for himself. Taking a long pull of it as she licked the neck of her bottle clean. Beer was never her drink of choice, but there were no other options. The alcohol may just give her enough confidence to stay with Rhett. Not sprint back to her safe space at Riley’s side — or in her car headed home.
She could do this. They were just…friends.
Right?
“Glad ya got t’see somethin’ good,” Rhett spoke around the lip of his beer before taking another sip, he was nearly halfway done already. “Before seein’ me ride like shit.”
“Hey, don’t talk like that. Bones hasn’t been good ridin’ n’years. Y’got screwed over.” Tessa hid her grin by taking a drink of her beer as he narrowed his eyes unbelievingly at her, smile ticking up the corner of his mouth. “I don’know — that’s just what the old guy behind me’s sayin’.”
He laughed with a shake of his head — and a foreign sense of pride filled up her chest, like a balloon with air, at getting him to do so. His laugh was soft, quiet. Like most of it got lost in him on its way out. He tried to hide that accompanying smile that showed all his teeth by ducking his head. But she saw it. And it was beautiful on him. Lit up his whole face from something unreadable and stoic to sincerity and joy.
Tessa liked it on him better than anything she’d seen.
“But seriously,” she went on, taking another sip of her beer and leaning her side against the tailgate of the blue truck. “You were good’n high school and y’r standin’s the last few years’ve always been great. Y’re better than that.”
There was a certain glint in his eye as he gazed down at her. “You kept up with m’standin’s?”
“Sometimes,” she mumbled, a heat in her cheeks at him catching on to a part of herself she didn’t mean to reveal.
He was the local boy, a legacy —  son of a Wabang bull rider. Sometimes, it was her father or Slick sitting around the kitchen table asking about him and how he had been riding recently. Other times, it was of her own volition. Sitting in the dim light of her room at the Boy’s Home, just wondering. Just curious. She didn’t care much for bull riding. But maybe somewhere deep down, even after all these years, she still cared a little too much about Rhett Abbott.
A great gust of wind blew through the pasture, carrying the windrows in its ghostly hands. It sent a chill through Tessa, the cold beer in her grip only making it worse. Rhett perked up from where he had been leaning against the tailgate.
“Shit, c’m’on — “ He reached out for her and she took a step closer. “Le’s get ya over t’the fire.”
She switched her beer to the other hand. “Yeah, that sounds nice.”
His left hand ghosted over her spine as she fell into step beside him. Fingers long and spread wide on her lower back, they walked closer to the bonfire. She was sure she imagined it, but his skin felt warm, even through her clothes. As if he would leave a handprint through the layers. His touch, light as it was and heavy as it felt, kindled something hot deep in her belly. Like the first sparks forged by flint to dry leaves. It urged her to walk closer to his side — and he let her in willingly.
“How — How’s the wrist?” she asked, needing something to fill the spaces between, as she nodded her head towards his braced hand.
He lifted his beer with that hand, almost like he forgot it was hurt at all. “S’fine. ‘Ve’had worse.”
“Like what?”
There were more people around the bonfire. Some were even dancing to music playing from somebody’s truck. But it was certainly warmer closer to the golden flames. Rhett dropped his hand, shoved it in his jeans pocket, once they were near enough. But she still felt his fingers burning at her skin.
“Uh, got bucked off inta the fence couple years’go — Montana,” he said, “Took’a post right t’the face.”
Tessa hissed through her teeth. “Ouch.”
“Y’can still feel where m’cheek got broken,” he chuckled, took a sip of his beer — nearly empty.
“Really?” she questioned, cocking her head to one side with a smile.
“Yeah, here — “
Rhett took her hand and brought it up to his face. That warm pit in her belly only grew, the leaves finally catching flame. His skin was warm. The flesh of his palm calloused and rough. His hand engulfed her own, eclipsed it like the sun to the moon. Tessa knew she was short, always had been, but never before had she felt so small as she did then. With her fingers pressed into Rhett’s cheek, his thumb to her palm, and his eyes trained on the ground as he blindly searched for something.
Then her fingers caught on it, a slight dip in his left cheek where the bone healed back together — up by his eye socket. His blue eyes slid up to look into her face expectantly.
“Feel that?” he asked.
“Uh-huh,” she replied, running her finger over the dent again. “Ya must’ve been a sight.”
“Eye swelled shut for a week,” he chuckled.
He pulled her fingers away from his face, but didn’t let go. Did she want him to? Using that hand, that feather-light hold on her she could so easily slip out of, he tugged her closer. The corner of his mouth was ticked up in a smirk, his cheeks slightly flushed. She couldn’t tell if that was from the alcohol, the adrenaline, or her. Did she want it to be her? When they were nearly chest to chest, he released her. Lifted his long, thick fingers to her chest.
Her heart was pounding. Beating like a drum in her ears as her breathing picked up. Rhett reached for her necklace, an antique locket passed down by her grandmother, and adjusted the way the pendant lay on her crewneck. She swallowed something thick as his fingertips traced up the chain.
She could feel his breath against her ear as he leaned in and muttered, “D’you wanna go f’r’a walk?”
Leaning back, fingers still lazily drifting around her necklace, thumbing at the pendant again, he flicked his eyes over to the woods just beyond the light of the bonfire.
She knew what that meant.
Alone. Secluded. Pushing her up against a tree somewhere in the dark. His lips on hers and hands touching everywhere. Just like Olivia Barlow. It was everything she wanted when she was fifteen. He wanted her. Looked down at her now with blue eyes so soft and wondering, mouth ticked up in some smirk only slightly cocky. He pulled in closer to her, towered over her, made it feel like he was the only other person there. The music was drowned out by the rushing sound in her ears. The pit in her stomach burst into flames, roaring and all-consuming as she felt the heat coming off of Rhett’s body. So close. So wanting.
He wanted her. She wanted him back. With his laugh so soft and busted cheekbone and open sincerity. And wasn’t that everything she desired? To want and be wanted in return?
But there was this fear. Creeping in with freezing winds to snuff out the flames.
Because what if he just wanted to use her to get off — a convenient body he hadn’t used before? What if he didn’t want anything more once they were done and he was satisfied? She didn’t want to be just another notch in Rhett Abbott’s bedpost. She didn’t want a one-time thing. She wanted to be wanted completely. Every day.
And right now, with Rhett, it didn’t feel complete. It felt fleeting, in the moment. That he would forget come morning and never talk to her again.
Tessa couldn’t risk her own heart — knowing that sorrow was inevitable.
So she took a step back.
Rhett’s eyes widened, his smile fading, as he withdrew his hand. Then his brow furrowed low, confusion evident.
“M’sorry, but, I — I gotta head on home,” she spoke quietly.
“Why?” he asked, arms now limp at his sides, shoulders hunched.
She bit her lip, fighting every urge to just turn around and walk away. “Early day tomorrow — back at work, so…”
“D’you…Wan’me t’walk ya t’y’re car?”
“No,” she responded quickly, then sighed, wringing the still half-full bottle of beer in her hands. “No, m’fine. Thanks.”
“‘Kay.” He gulped down the last of his Heineken.
“See ya around, Rhett.”
“Yeah, see ya.”
Her eyes stung with unshed tears as she turned and walked away from him. Away from the warm glow of the bonfire and towards her car. The warmth in her belly had been put out. Replaced with some nauseating weight.
Once at her car, she texted Riley she was leaving and poured out the rest of the beer she was still holding. Tossing the bottle into her front seat.
Turns out, she may just end up alone and bitter forever. She couldn’t just loosen up and stop thinking so negatively — about everything. Including Rhett, including herself. A tragedy, creator of her own downfall.

Bucky
The Quinjet sliced through the night sky, the city lights of Manhattan twinkling below. Inside, the atmosphere was tense, an undercurrent of excitement and anxiety palpable. Bucky sat in the pilot’s seat, his jaw clenched, eyes fixed on the approaching skyline.
Natasha and Wanda exchanged a glance before Nat finally broke the silence, "Okay, Barnes, what exactly is the plan when we get there?"
Bucky glanced back at them, uncertainty in his eyes. "I... I don't know. Just need to see her, you know?"
Wanda raised an eyebrow, "See her or talk to her?"
He sighed. "Both, I guess. I messed up, and I finally realize it and…I just need to fix it."
Natasha crossed her arms, studying him intently. "This is a pretty big swing for one night, Buck. Are you sure you’re ready for this?"
“Aren’t you the ones who dragged my ass out of the gym to stage an intervention, like six hours ago? Wasn’t this the goal?”
“Of course, the goal was to get you to pull your head out of your ass,” Nat shifted in her chair, tugging the hem of her dress down. Neither she or Wanda was thrilled to be told they were either getting ready on the jet or getting left behind. “I just expected you to, I don’t know…think it through for a little longer before making your grand gesture.”
"I know," he admitted, a pained expression flickering across his face. "But seeing those pictures tonight...seeing my girl with my friends…I had all of that in my life and I ruined it. I need to make things right. I know it sounds crazy but I just…I don’t want to waste any more time than I already have."
Both women gave a soft, knowing smile. “Okay.” Nat squeezed his arm. “Let’s go win her back.”
The Quinjet descended toward the landing pad on the Avengers’ Tower. A quick hundred story descent in the elevator, and they were stepping out onto the streets of Manhattan. As arranged, a car was waiting to take them the few blocks to the lounge that Nat had confirmed their friends were still at.
As the car doors opened after a short, tense drive, the sounds of the city flooded in – distant traffic, the murmur of late-night debauchery. The trio stepped out, immediately beginning to draw attention as they walked to the front of the line.
Wanda nudged Bucky. "Remember, you're here to talk, not to make a scene. We're in public, and Gianna deserves better than a dramatic confrontation."
Bucky nodded, his resolve solidifying. The bouncer eyed them skeptically. "Invitation only." Stepping forward, Bucky let out a low growl as he pushed up the sleeve on his shirt. Like hell if some steroid-brained security guard was going to derail his plan. Before he could take matters into his own hands, a delicately manicured one stopped him.
Natasha flashed a smile and flipped her hair over her shoulder.. "Check the list again."
The bouncer’s eyes widened, immediately recognizing Natasha, and let them through with a nod.
“I had it under control.” Bucky grumbled sheepishly.
“I know you did.”
Gianna
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thumping of the bass reverberated in her chest as Gianna found herself caught up in the night and fully losing track of time. Tony and Sam were leading the charge, going shot for shot with a bachelorette party they’d met at the bar. Somewhere on the dance floor, Madison was dancing with a still-starstruck Peter, who was doing everything in his power to keep her from toppling over.
Amidst the chaos, Gianna spotted Steve sitting in a plush corner booth, offering a reprieve from the noise. He raised his beer to her, gesturing for her to join him as she desperately tried to untangle herself from the crowd. Gianna slid into the booth gratefully, shielded from the cacophony around them.
"So, how's life, Cap?" She smiled, sipping on her drink. She’d been nursing the same espresso martini since they’d arrived over an hour ago, he noticed.
Steve chuckled. "You know, same old. Saving the world, the usual stuff."
"Boring day job," she teased. The conversation was light, easy. It had always flowed between them before and didn’t seem to be too different now. Although there was no mistaking the hint of guilt, of pity that Gianna could see in his eyes. Like he felt bad for her or somehow held himself responsible for his best friend’s actions. Maybe she was misreading it, and it wasn’t either of those things. Maybe it was just sadness, seeing what could have existed if Bucky hadn’t done what he thought he had to.
As if reading her mind, Steve took a more serious tone. “We all miss you, G. It hasn’t been the same since you left.”
Gianna paused, her gaze drifting to the twinkling lights of the club. “I miss you guys too. More than you know.” A moment passed where neither of them spoke. Steve followed her gaze into the crowd, the noise seeming thousands of miles from their booth.
"How's he doing?" Gianna bit her lip after speaking, her voice so soft that anyone other than a super soldier wouldn’t have caught it.
Steve sighed, his expression briefly clouded. "He's...struggling. It hasn’t been easy on him either. We’ve been trying to help out, but you know Bucky; he's not great at expressing himself."
"Yeah," Gianna acknowledged, a bittersweet smile playing on her lips before faltering. "I wish... I wish he had just talked to me."
Steve nodded, understanding reflected in his eyes. "He's got his demons. Sometimes, most of the time, he fights them alone. Even I don’t know half the battles he’s waging."
“I’m glad he has you. Even if he chooses to do it alone…I’m glad he isn’t.”
A somber quiet settled between them, strobe lights above the dance floor casting shadows in the dimly lit booth. Steve set his bottle down on the table and leaned forward onto his elbows. “You aren’t alone either, you know. We’re all here if you need us.”
Gianna gave a half smile before raising her glass to her lips and finally polishing off the martini. A cocktail waitress, likely hoping for either a photo or a large tip, immediately swooped in with a fresh one and whisked the empty glass away. Steve watched her take a sip and didn’t fail to notice that she was suddenly drinking a lot more quickly after the mention of Bucky.
“How are you doing, G? Really?” His voice was soft.
Gianna paused, eyes staring blankly ahead. For a moment, the public facade dropped. The smile, the rosy cheeks. Her eyes looked gaunt, exhausted. "I love him, Steve. I probably always will. But right now, I... I can’t stand him for what he did." She set her jaw. “I am so angry. All the time. I don’t know how to feel anything else. I was happy before him, or at least I thought I was. I didn’t know what I was living without, and then…there was Bucky. He was everything and he made me feel everything and life was just…better. Brighter. I thought I had everything, but once I met him, I realized I’d walk away from it all and never look back so long as I was walking with him.”
She slowly twirled the stem of her glass between her fingers, smiling sadly. “I found what I was missing. Or so I thought. Then…he just pulled away. I could feel it, you know.” She met Steve’s eyes. “When I started losing him. I didn’t want to believe it. I told myself it was something else, it wasn’t us. Things between us were perfect. Then they just…weren’t. It felt like I was stabbed and I couldn’t stop the bleeding. I just had to sit there and watch the life leak out of me. Then, right when I thought I knew pain, he came in and destroyed me for good.”
Her lower lip quivered, but Steve knew she wasn’t done speaking. He had a feeling she hadn’t really been listened to since she left, maybe even before that. A pang of guilt hit him in the chest.
“He wasn’t supposed to leave. He was the one person who saw me. He was supposed to be here…he was supposed to stay. I was fine on my own, I liked my life. But Bucky…” A single tear slid down her cheek, cutting through her perfect makeup. “He came into my life and made me realize everything I could have, everything I was missing. He let me fall in love with him and then he fucking left. Now I’m here, alone again, telling myself it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all but that’s just bullshit. I would rather have never felt love than to have felt it and now have this gaping hole in my heart where he was supposed to be.” Her fist hit the table hard enough to rattle the glass.
The intensity of the moment seemed to surprise her, jolting her back into her poised persona. “Damn,” She mustered a soft smile. “This is why I don’t drink vodka.”
Steve's gaze was soft, concerned. He opened his mouth to speak before being distracted by a group approaching their booth. Gianna saw them first, eyes brightening as she recognized someone. Quickly brushing the tear off her cheek, she slid out of the booth to greet them. A brunette man led the charge, pulling her into a friendly hug. As he pulled back, Steve recognized him as the actor set to play Bucky in an upcoming movie. The one Steve had encouraged him to sign off on. Watching Gianna embrace the man who looked shockingly like his friend, albeit with smaller stature, he felt slightly guilty. He reminded himself that as much as he tried to protect Bucky, he was a grown man who made his own choices, and this was the result of one of those choices. Deciding to be polite, he slid out of the booth after Gianna and waited for a chance to introduce himself. Noticing his presence behind her, Gianna stepped to the side and gestured between the two men.
"This is Sebastian Stan, a good friend of mine. Seb, this is Steve, Captain America himself." She smiled easily.
Sebastian extended a hand, and Steve shook it with as genuine of a smile as he could muster. "A man who needs no introduction. It’s an honor."
"Nice to meet you. A friend of Gianna’s is a friend of mine." Steve replied, the noise of the lounge already making him want to retreat to his booth. Sebastian seemed nice enough, but he didn’t exactly want to stay and exchange life stories. As he excused himself to handle the small matter of Sam hoisting a petite brunette onto his shoulders for some unknown reason, he heard their conversation continue behind him.
"Long time no see. How was the week?" Gianna asked.
Sebastian chuckled. "Well, your advice has been invaluable. I'm starting to understand the guy a bit more. As much as anyone can. I know I say it every time I see you, but seriously, thank you for your help."
Gianna leaned back against the plush booth, sipping her drink. "It's not every day you get to help someone play your ex on the big screen, right?"
Sebastian laughed heartily. "True, true. But seriously, your insights have been gold. I’m sure it isn’t easy, but I’m sure he’d appreciate knowing you care enough to help me get it right.”
Gianna nodded, her expression thoughtful before she decided to shift gears, winking. "Just thank me in your Oscar acceptance speech and we’ll be even.”
Bucky

The lounge was alive with energy, the music pulsing through the air. In the hour it had taken them to get to the doorstep, the place had hit capacity. The line stretched around the block with people hoping to get a chance to party with their favorite celebrities. The low lit room was teeming with people. Some on the dance floor, some at the bar, some huddled in the plush booths lining either side of the room. This was exactly the kind of place he never wanted to be. Too many sounds, too many people. Maybe if he could actually get as drunk as all the other patrons, it wouldn’t be half bad. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. So he hated nightlife. Tonight, it was a necessary evil.
Spotting Gianna across the crowded room, Bucky's heart quickened. She was facing the right side of the room, talking to someone blocked by the crowd. She was smiling, laughing, the same way she always seemed to be photographed lately.
Bucky took a deep breath, the noise of the crowd fading as he focused on the task at hand. Nat and Wanda flanked him, silent support in the midst of the chaos. He made a mental note to thank Wanda for her solidarity. On any other night, she would have fled as soon as they got inside. She loved places like this. Tonight, she hadnt budged from his side. Taking a deep breath, he began to weave through the crowd.
As Bucky navigated the crowded space, his eyes scanned the room until they again landed on Gianna. This time, he paused. The sight of her happiness, genuine and infectious, was both a balm and a dagger to his heart. From this closer vantage point, he could see her so clearly. Clear enough that he could tell her smile wasn’t fake. Close enough that he could see exactly who it was that she was talking to.
Heartache surged through him, icy in his veins. His breath caught. A whirlwind of emotions churned within him. Jealousy, regret, and a sense of unworthiness surged back to the forefront. He was torn between the desire to interrupt, to hold her and tell her he was sorry and beg her to forgive him. To tell her he loved her and would never make such a stupid decision again. He was torn between the reason he came and the realization that Gianna appeared truly, genuinely happy.
The internal conflict waged on, and finally, he made his choice. Gianna looked content. She was here in her element, with the kind of people she was supposed to be with, her laughter was genuine, and he couldn't bring himself to disturb that.
He turned away, face solemn.
"Bucky?" Natasha's eyes were sharp, reading the turmoil etched across his face.
He shook his head. "Not tonight. I can't... It's not the right time. You were right.”
Natasha exchanged a knowing look with Wanda, but Bucky interrupted before either of them could speak. “I’m sorry I dragged you all the way out here. You guys should stay, have a good time. Tell the others I said hey.” He forced a smile, trying to look like he wasn’t falling apart inside. “I’ll hang back at the tower. Don’t get into too much trouble.”
He tousled Wanda’s hair before turning to leave, his broad frame weaving through the club's patrons like a ghost. The two women watched as Bucky, cloaked in shadows and the weight of his own decisions, departed from the club alone.
Gianna
A flash of red hair caught her eye over Sebastian’s shoulder, immediately grabbing her attention.
“Nat?” Her voice was overjoyed. “Wanda?!”
"G!” Wanda squealed, running the last few steps between them and engulfing her into a rib-crushing hug that Nat joined.
“What are you guys doing here?!” Gianna beamed, forgetting about the conversation she had just left.
Natasha smirked. "Well, we couldn’t let the guys have all the fun, now could we?”
“You’ve got some catching up to do, if you’re looking to compete with them.” Gianna grinned, gesturing to the bar, where Tony was now doing a rockette-style dance with half the bachelorette party.
“Say no more.” She gestured to the lingering cocktail waitress. “Three tequila shots, please.” Her eyes darted to Steve, sheepishly standing by the bar after a failed attempt to corral Sam. “Make that four.”
Gianna’s smile faltered, a hint of sadness in her eyes. "Guys…I'm sorry I haven't kept in touch. It's just...It hurt too much. I wasn’t ready yet."
Wanda gave her a sympathetic smile. "We understand, G. We didn’t think a thing of it. But we’re here now, we missed you like crazy, and we have so much catching up to do!" She waggled her eyebrows at Sebastian, chatting with the group he came with in Gianna’s absence.
She rolled her eyes, waving off Wanda with a laugh. "You guys have no idea how much I needed this. Hey, why don't you come stay with me for a few nights? Catch up for real. I can show you my new place and everything!"
Natasha nodded immediately. "Hell yes. We missed our girl time." She linked arms with Gianna. “And our girl. Plus it’s been a total sausage fest at the compound and we need to get away from all the testosterone.”
They laughed and fell back into friendship like there had never been any pain or separation at all. Nat dragged Steve over to take the shot with them, and Gianna caught the way his eyes lit up when he saw her there. Right after the look of pleasant surprise, his brow furrowed and his eyes darted past her scanning the crowd. Barely perceptibly, Nat caught his eye and shook her head.
Gianna furrowed her brow, feeling like there was more to the story. However, before she could press, Wanda grabbed her arm.
“Let’s dance, I just saw Peter and -- oh my god, is that Madison Beer?!”
As they walked, Gianna couldn't help but cast a glance toward the entrance, a flicker of hope in her heart. She wished, just for a moment, that someone else would walk through that door. Someone she missed more than she cared to admit. But, with a sigh, she shook off the thought, determined to give herself over to the buzz from the tequila and the night with her friends.

I'm on a two week spring break (as the seasons in my country work differently to EU and USA), and I'm also working on a business report that has to be submitted by October 13th. What better time to write than now?
I am once again truthfully sorry for my continuous disappearances.

The walk home seemed longer than usual as Bucky trodged down the familiar path, every item of clothing feeling heavier with each step. He juggled his keys, slightly frustrated when they didn't go into the lock in the first few attempts. Finally, he managed, stumbling forwards from having his weight on the door. Bucky kicked off his boots in an instant, hung up his coat and hat, and looked around for his sweet love, his sugarbunch.
A smile bloomed across his handsome face as he saw her sauntering towards him, pretty dress flowing in the cool spring breeze. "Well, hello there, handsome chap. To what do I owe you the honours?" She smiled playfully, arms stretching open. Bucky gracefully accepted her invitation, wrapping himself around her and laying his cheek on her shoulder. "There, there, my love. Come on in. Go have a warm bath whilst I finish setting up the dinner table." His wife soothed, kissing above his cheekbone.
Once he'd freshened up, Bucky came downstairs to their four-person dining table, grinning at the meal his wife had prepared. She slid down in the seat across from him and reached out her hand, taking his. "Would you be as kind as to say grace for us?" She smiled, stroking her thumb over his bruised knuckles. They bowed their heads and closed their eyes as Bucky prayed for the food, "Lord God, Heavenly Father, bless our food and our drink, since you redeemed us so dearly and delivered us from evil, as you gave us a share in food and so may you give us eternal life. Amen.". They said amen in unison, and James kissed her hand as he let go of it.
"Jamie, my dear, I do not mean to alarm you, but I read about the war in the papers earlier today. It only seems to be intensifying. And I'm afraid young American men are no longer permitted a say as to whether or not they're getting drafted." His wife announced as she was washing the dishes, and he was drying and packing them away. The mug that he was busy drying slipped from his hands, but thankfully, his wife caught it just before it tumbled down the floor. "James," she breathed, taking his hands and gently tugging him away from the sink.
"Be..g my pardon, m-my love. The reality of the situations and times that we are living in has only dawned upon me now." James breathed, exhaling once again in disbelief. "Why don't you go and get ready for bed whilst I finish up here, hm?" She hummed, trailing her hand up to his neck and laying it there against his warm skin. "Alright, my darling, I bid on seeing you soon." He smiled, squeezing her hand that he held. "In the blink of an eye, sugar. Now go." She grinned, patting his cheek.
She joined him shortly after bathing and getting ready for bed, her chest tightening as she saw his frame in the bed, curled up in fear and staring off at the wood of his closet doors. Despite being fully aware of her presence, Bucky jumped when he felt her hand snake over his side and onto his stomach and chest. "Pardon me, my love." She giggled, spooning up against his back. James held his hand over hers as he continued to stare at the door. She felt sudden guilt. Should I not have told him that? She wondered.
"I'm sorry if I alarmed you, my darling." She said, pressing a loving kiss to the back of his neck. "You did not alarm me, dollface. 'M just tired from work 's all." He said, turning to face her. "Jamie, what'd your mama teach you about lying?" She warned. "Alright, alright." He smiled, eyes trailing across her bonny face, ruminating his luck. "Whatsoever may happen with this war, James, know that I love you." Y/N smiled, holding his hand to her chest and kissing his palm. "And I you." He smiled.
She skipped her reading that night, and so did he, just basking in each other's presence. The pair had fallen in love just after high school. James had seen her at church after praying for a pretty woman to cross his path, and she had prayed for a stable rock in her life to start a family with later on. It was instant love. After a period of wooing the pretty girl, they started dating, which then flourished into marriage. Bucky, age 24, Y/N, age 22, decided that they were content with the life they had built. Small but decent apartment, church community, flourishing matrimony, James had a stable job, and Y/N was applying for several.
Not to mention, their parents were incredulously proud. They were the spoken couple of Brooklyn, and Y/N treated Steve with the respect he deserved from day one, which was probably one of the central reasons for Becky's undying love for her. The life they had built together was sublime. Until the war hit.

“But does he know you call me when he sleeps?”
-
Bucky Barnes was no easy man to get over.
You had never felt so much dread over a breakup in years. You actually don’t even remember if this much dread ever consumed you after a breakup, but you tried your best to pretend like it was any other end to a relationship you’ve had in the past.
It clearly wasn’t. It never helped that you saw Bucky often and wanted nothing more than to just give in and get back with him. You held your own, however, trying everything to move on and not dwell on what could’ve been between you two. It took a few months, but it eventually worked. You were seeing someone new and things were going great for you.
Bucky, on the other hand, was still stuck.
He had no real interest in trying to move on from you because he was more than positive you’d make your way back to him. He never told anyone that because he didn’t want to seem or even be possessive; Bucky simply wasn’t interested in anyone but you. Your relationship ending amicably only made it all the more difficult to think he could ever be with someone else, or see you with someone else.
But to his unfortunate demise, he’d have to.
Bucky entered his apartment after his back-to-back classes, wanting nothing more than to sleep for the entirety of his three-day weekend given the incessant exhaustion he’d been experiencing lately. But his apartment was more chaotic than usual as he arrived. Sam, Steve, Natasha, Wanda, Pietro, and Thor were all in the livingroom, playing just about any board game they found within the living space.
It wasn’t unusual for everyone to spend time together at the end of the week, but they were never so enthusiastic about anything on a Thursday. They also rarely ever got together without you, which Bucky noticed right away as everyone greeted him.
“How was class, Buck?” Nat said almost concerned, her tone throwing Bucky off right away.
Their friendship was almost always playful banter, a serious conversation rarely happening out of the confines of a room with only them two in it. Natasha had heard most of both yours and Bucky’s feelings before, during, and after your breakup. It had been about 5 months since then, but Natasha’s worrying look on her face along with your absence only made him wonder what could’ve happened.
“Class was fine…” he trailed off, looking around at everyone staring at him. “Where’s Y/n?”
Everyone shrugged and made up their own excuses.
Haven’t seen her since this morning.
Only saw her in class today.
I haven’t talked to her in a while.
Bucky scoffed, knowing something was being hidden from him, which he hated. He never enjoyed being left out of the loop, especially when it came to you. Knowing it was most likely something he wouldn’t be fond of only made him feel worse, not appreciating being treated like a fragile object because of his history with you.
“Who’s gonna actually tell me why Y/n isn’t here?” Bucky asked, everyone getting quiet. He noticed Thor itching to say something, Natasha giving him a pointed look. Bucky looked over at him, “Thor?”
“What? No, I know nothing,” he spoke quickly, Natasha rubbing her temples at the horrible attempt to lie. “I mean—I don’t know, she just—”
“She just what?” Bucky interrupted him, knowing she was probably the only one who’d crack under pressure to say something.
“Buck, it’s fine—”
“No, Steve,” Bucky interrupted his lifelong friend. “I understand you all somehow think I’m this fragile puppy who begs and calls at Y/n’s mercy but she’s still part of our friend group and I wanna know why she isn’t he—”
“She’s with her boyfriend,” Natasha interrupted, her tone a lot more stern and pointed. “Y/n’s with her new boyfriend. That’s why she isn’t here, Bucky. Happy?”
He honestly wasn’t happy, rather speechless and a bit shocked. You moving on might’ve been inevitable, he had convinced himself of that over the last few months. However, Bucky never anticipated it happening so soon. Five months was indeed an extensive period of time, but he hadn’t even so much looked at a girl, let alone try to move on.
He was still more than hung up on you, and you had a new boyfriend. That wasn’t him.
Bucky sighed. “Oh. Okay.”
“Bucky—”
“No, it’s okay, Nat,” he cut her off, immediately not wanting to be the center of a pity party. He had enough of those throughout his lifetime. “Thanks for letting me know. I’m just gonna go sleep for a bit.”
Ignoring everyone’s calls for him to say which turned to defeated goodbyes as he ignored them and made his way to his room at the end of the hall, Bucky felt even more exhausted. He hadn’t seen you in about two days, and you hadn’t mentioned once that you were seeing someone, let alone about to date them. The weight on his chest only grew heavier as he continued to think about it, laying in his bed under the covers and staring at the ceiling for what felt like forever until he finally fell asleep.
Until there was a knock on the door.
“Buck? It’s me,” he heard your soft voice on the other end of the room, peeling one of his eyes open to see you peeking your head inside of his doorway, but not entering yet. “Are you awake? Can I come in?”
Bucky lifted his head up to look at you clearly, nodding before you entered, closing the door behind you.
You were anxious. Bucky noticed you fiddling with your fingers like you always did when you were nervous about something, and he also noticed you wearing the same jacket he bought you for Christmas. The same one you wore when you had broken up.
Neither of you said a word, and you both found it impossible to make out what the other person was thinking.
Now that you were aware Bucky knew of your relationship, you’d assumed he’d either be accepting or completely broken. Which one? You weren’t too sure, but you’d hoped it wouldn’t be the latter. The dread you’d felt for so long wasn’t easy to pull yourself out of, and never in a million years did you ever think you would even move on from him. You were convinced he was the love of your life, but sometimes the universe has different plans for anyone. Maybe Bucky wasn’t the love of your life, or you just weren’t meant to be with each other right now.
Bucky was hurt, yes, but he remembered he promised himself to never hurt you. The care he had for you trumped any of his feelings, which might catch him in the wrong place in the long run, but he never cared. You were his world, and he never wanted to watch it crumble.
“I—“
“I just—“
You both had a habit of talking at the same time during conversations like these. Bucky scratched the back of his neck and gave you a half-smile.
“You go first,” he said softly, his voice no louder than a hard whisper.
Rocking back and forth on your heels, you avoided his gaze.
“I know you heard about me and Atlas and I don’t want you to think that I’m trying to hurt you or make you jealous or anything like that,” you rambled a bit. Thoughts weren’t seeming to formulate properly in your head at the moment which only frustrated you even more. Bucky never interrupted, though. He simply listened. “I care about you and I love you so much and the last thing I’d want to do is to hurt your feelings or not take them into consideration. I know I didn’t tell you I was seeing anyone but I didn’t tell anyone out of fear of judgment, along with the fact that I didn’t even know if things would get this far. I’m really sorry.”
You finally looked up at Bucky and couldn’t make out his thoughts. He was looking at you and he more than definitely had listened. Nonetheless, his expression was unreadable, which was a first for you.
Throughout your entire friendship and relationship, you could read Bucky like a menu at a restaurant. Somehow, you were aware of how he was feeling; he’d even ask you how you were so good at reading people, but in reality, it was just him. There was always a strong intuition with him, but for the first time in years, you couldn’t gauge what he was thinking.
“I still love you,” he finally spoke. “I love you so much and it did hurt, more than anything, when I was the last one to know you were even seeing someone. But I can’t hold that against you. Or anyone,” he shifted to face you better. “I want you to be happy, prinţesă. I would never feel like you were intentionally hurting me by doing what’s best for you. If he’s good for you, then I’m happy for you.”
“Thank you, Bucky,” you said, blinking some of your tears away. The last thing you wanted to do was cry in front of him again, knowing he hated when you cried, but there would always be a part of you that held so much love for him. You had appreciated that he was putting his friendship with you and your happiness above anything else.
You had felt the sincerity of Bucky’s words, feeling a lot more relieved now. Unbeknownst to you, however, Bucky was only telling the half truth.
He did want you to be happy, that much was always true. He just wished he could be the one to make that happen. He wished he could convince you to stay somehow. He wished you would come back to him. An immature version of him might have tried to convince you, a version of him he no longer recognized.
Bucky was kind of a flirt prior to getting involved with you. He never messed with anyone’s feelings or made the effort to sleep around, but anyone would fawn over James Bucky Barnes. He had enjoyed that attention. He knew he could have any girl he wanted, and he might have taken slight advantage of that to keep himself busy.
But when he had first heard about you, he knew he had to have you. You were everything Bucky had dreamed of in a partner. You were so gorgeous, Bucky had tripped over his foot staring at you from afar. You were intelligent, currently top of your class and cruising with a solid 4.0 GPA. You had a nice sense of humor, knew just about anyone and everyone, and they all loved you. Not to mention you had already known some of his closest friends. You were roommates with Natasha, you were close with Wanda and Pietro, and you had a few classes with Sam since you had the same major and thus, took the same requirements.
He did everything he could to get you. He had asked Natasha and Wanda about you whenever he saw them, watching them get extremely excited that he had an actual crush on someone. He’d talk to you more often when he saw you, eventually becoming one of your close friends and having you become part of his circle with the rest of the gang.
He had fallen in love with you so fast. He memorized your scent, your laugh, your voice, your favorite movies, shows, foods, even your favorite type of clothing to wear. He bought you a similar jacket to his because you mentioned you really liked it once. He traveled all the way back to his hometown in Brooklyn to pick up donuts from a shop he thought you would love. He memorized your schedule so he knew when it was best to see you.
Bucky loved you. He still did, and boy, did he think he could never get over that fact.
If he were slightly more immature, he’d beg you to stay. He’d tell you he was the one for you. But that wasn’t him anymore. He wasn’t trying to wrap you around his finger. He wanted you to remain the same you that he always adored. With or without him.
After that conversation, you and Bucky were still a bit distant, but you remained cordial. You had even decided to bring your boyfriend to the next group hangout. Upon seeing him, he seemed too familiar to Bucky.
He was a nice, tall, attractive guy, one who seemed to be in constant awe of you and everything you said. He made the effort to lean into your ear when he laughed at a joke, and wrap his arm around your shoulder, letting it relax there for a bit.
Atlas D’Angelo. That was his name. He was a frat guy, wearing his letters on the jacket he was sporting. Maybe that’s what was familiar about him; Bucky might have seen him at a party before. Or some event where the Greek Orgs were in attendance.
Bucky had zoned out trying to figure out where he might’ve known him from, Steve having to snap in front of his face to grab his attention in the diner you were all seated in.
“Earth to Bucky…?” Natasha teased, Bucky diverting his attention away from the reflection of the light on the table that seemed so entertaining during his battle with his thoughts.
“Sorry,” he said. “What happened?”
“Atlas was asking what everyone’s majoring in,” you answered monotonously. “It’s your turn to answer, Buck.”
“Oh,” Bucky said, his eyes not leaving your face as he answered. “Business.” He looked over to Atlas. “Someone’s gotta take over the family business.”
Atlas smiled, though it came off more as a grimace. The tension in the air was a bit extreme, though Bucky didn’t think it was that serious.
“So, Atlas,” Steve cut the silence. “You play basketball? Got the height for it.”
“A bit,” Atlas responded, his hand grazing over yours on top of the table, which Bucky didn’t fail to notice. “I wanted to join the club team but I have no idea when tryouts are.”
“Oh, Bucky’s the captain!” Natasha said enthusiastically, Bucky shooting her a quick glance before smiling as friendly as possible to Atlas. “And Steve’s co-captain, they should know if there’s a spot left, right?”
“Yeah, I think there’s space,” Steve answered, recognizing the stiffness in his best friend’s shoulders. “I can ask Coach Fury to hold a tryout for you if you’re still interested.”
Steve took over the discussion about the team, even though it was clear Natasha made the point to emphasize that Bucky was Captain on purpose.
Steve and Natasha were the main witnesses of Bucky’s feelings after finding out about your relationship with Atlas, Natasha trying not too hard to say anything to you out of respect for him. But Bucky obviously felt more comfortable talking to Steve about it, childhood friendship and all.
He also knew just how close you were with Natasha, and didn’t want to have her accidentally slip something up that he didn’t want you to know or feel bad about. Steve was aware of that. His relationship with Natasha never came before his best friend’s feelings, even when she had asked him how Bucky was doing. He never spilled too much, and he knew just how much Bucky was affected by everything currently going on. He wouldn’t want to put him in an uncomfortable position by making him talk to your boyfriend.
“I’ll definitely be at your Friday practice then,” Bucky overheard Atlas say, his attention behind the booth somewhere. You had caught glances at him all night, feeling that he was a bit uncomfortable, but trying to hide it. “Is that okay with you, James?”
Bucky snapped his head over at the sound of his name. “Yeah, that’s cool. And just Bucky is fine. No one calls me James.”
Atlas nodded. “Good to know, Bucky.”
The rest of the dinner seemed to go respectfully. Bucky actually engaged in conversation with you (and your boyfriend) without looking like he might pass out. There was hope inside of you that Bucky and Atlas might end up getting along somehow, but you didn’t push anything.
“So are you guys into parties or no?” Atlas said, popping one of your fries into his mouth. “I know I’ve seen Barnes at a few.”
“Have you?” You questioned, looking at him. “Bucky’s not really the party type.”
“I used to be,” Bucky admitted. “But that was before you and I met. More freshman and early sophomore year.” He looked over at you, and you could see he felt a bit flustered.
“How about you guys slide to our bash this Saturday? I know my baby’s gonna be there,” he said, pressing a kiss on your cheek.
Bucky shifted in his seat. He knew you’d been to a few parties, but never a frat party. Those weren’t your thing. Assuming you were just supporting Atlas, Bucky shoved his thoughts aside.
“Yeah, we can go,” Sam answered, looking at Steve, Bucky, and Pietro. “You guys down?”
The three of them nodded in agreement, confirming their attendance, to which Natasha and Wanda sounded off as well.
“Guess I’ll be seeing you guys Friday and Saturday.”
After paying the check and saying goodbye to everyone, you made your way to Atlas’s car, quickly getting inside to get away from the cold. You could tell something was a bit off as he got inside after you.
“Is everything okay?” You asked as he started the car, sighing to himself.
“Does Bucky still have feelings for you? He just seemed uncomfortable at first and I don’t want your friends to hate me,” he said with no hesitation.
If you were being honest, you weren’t completely sure how to answer. You didn’t know if Bucky still had feelings or how strong they were if he did. You just knew he accepted your decision to move on with no hesitation.
“I- I don’t know,” you responded truthfully. “Bucky and I were together for a really long time, it’s not something that one can get over really quickly—”
“Are you completely over it?” He interrupted you. “It doesn’t seem like he is, but now I need to know if you are.”
“I will always love Bucky, Atlas,” you countered. “Nothing is gonna change that; he’s still one of my best friends. But he knows you and I are together and was accepting and supportive of it. There’s nothing to worry about.”
Atlas hummed. “Okay, Y/n. I trust you.”
Deciding against saying anything for the rest of the night, you kept your thoughts to yourself. The tension was undeniable, and even as you decided to stay over at his dorm, you stayed awake with your thoughts. You weren’t second guessing anything, that was certain, but did Bucky still have feelings for you?
No, no. He couldn’t. He didn’t give the impression that he did.
Looking behind you to see Atlas sound asleep, you got out of his bed, grabbed your phone, and made your way out to the kitchen. Scrolling through your messages with Bucky as you poured yourself a glass of water, your finger hovered over the call button. Looking back to see Atlas’s bedroom door shut, you looked back at your phone and pressed the button before bringing the phone up to your ear.
It rang three times before he picked up.
“Hello?” Bucky responded, the grogginess in his tone letting you know he was asleep. His voice still sounded soothing when he woke up. “Y/n? Is everything okay?”
Shaking your thoughts away, you responded. “Hey, yeah, everything’s fine. I just wanted to talk to you.”
“At…” He paused for a second. “2AM?”
“Yeah, sorry,” you facepalmed. “I didn’t see the time, I just haven’t been able to sleep.”
“What do you wanna talk about?” he moved the conversation back to its original topic, his usual effort of not wanting you to lose your train of thought. You could hear him shuffling, probably sitting up in bed or moving to lay on his back.
You could picture him in your mind, with his disheveled hair, rubbing his eyes as he usually did when he was woken up abruptly, trying his best to stay awake though he almost always ended up falling asleep again subconsciously.
“I just… wanted to ask you something.”
“Where are you right now?”
“I’m at Atlas’s dorm, but he’s sleeping right now,”
“Hm,” he hummed instantly, but he was also probably drifting off to his slumber again. “What’s your question, prinţesă?”
He knew you loved when he called you that.
“Um, well,” you started, shifting in your brain to see how best to phrase what you wanted to ask. “Atlas had asked me earlier if you still had feelings for me and I hadn’t really thought about it but, of course, I want you two to get along. I mean— I want him to get along with all of you, but especially you since you mean a lot to me and I know that we have history, so… I guess I just wanted to ask if there were still any feelings there. I was just wondering, I think.”
Silence.
But you could make out Bucky’s soft breathing, meaning he fell asleep with his phone in his hand, probably next to his head on his pillow like he would set it up when you’d sleep on the phone together when too far apart from each other.
“Buck? Did you fall asleep?”
“Hm?” he hummed softly again. “What was your question, prinţesă?”
His words were a little slurred, filled with drowsiness.
“It’s okay, Bucky, I can just ask you tomorrow. Before the SGA meeting?”
“Mhm,” he whispered. “That sounds good, sweetheart.”
Biting down on your lip at his sudden boldness with the pet names, ones he hadn’t called you so often lately, you sighed to yourself.
“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow then,” you said as he hummed again. “Goodnight, Bucky.”
“Goodnight, prinţesă. I love you.”
“I love you too,” you said with no hesitation, though you didn’t think much of it.
Hanging up the phone, you finished the rest of your water before heading back to bed. Atlas was still asleep, and you figured you weren’t going to get much of it tonight. Part of you wished Bucky was the one laid up next to you, but that was the part of you that you were trying to ignore for the past few weeks.
You and Bucky weren’t together anymore. And that was it.
You just hoped he wouldn’t remember your impulsive call in the morning.

“Have you jerked off today? If not, I want to help you.” Debbie’s new self confidence is extremely sexy. Her words dripped like honey. Her eyes focused upon Steve as to challenge him to make his long anticipated move.
Steve’s smirk tells Deb he finds it irresistible as hell. “No, baby girl, I haven’t. I rather cum in you.” His ocean blue eyes run over her body, sending delightful shivers down to her core.
She takes a step closer to Steve, who is now standing in the middle of the kitchen with a teasing smirk. “You’re a sassy ass.”
“That’s America’s ass, to you.”
“Um, do you realize that sounds like the title to your sex tape.. if you had one, of course.”
“What makes you think I don’t, Doll?” Now it was her turn to blush. She felt the heat reach her cheeks, knowing Steve was getting to her.
Buck leans his back on the bar, sipping his whisky. “You walked right into that one,” he jokes.
“Oh, who asked you anyway?” Deb mutters, trying to gain composure.
Bucky places the tumbler onto the counter. He makes three large strides towards Deb. “You were the one who asked me to judge this little flirting match of yours.” He runs his hungry eyes over her body, his cock twitching in anticipation.  “Considering we all have put the moves on you, doll face, I don’t understand why we haven’t got a room and fucked it out yet.”
“With lots of cums from me, baby,” adds Peter from his seat.
Buck re-approaches her again with his play, as his voice drops an octave as he asks, "Are you a morning person or a moaning person? Can we figure it out?" He thumbs Deb’s lower lip, making her blush while her goddess fans herself swooning. Bucky smirks at his success, backing up once more, leaning against the counter.
The guys didn’t play fair. They had her turned on her body, wanting them to take her now. She gains her composure, clearing her throat nervously. “You just might find out, Sergeant Barnes.” Her voice slightly shakes with anticipation. Bucky gives her a wink, adjusting himself with his right hand to relieve the pressure of his growing erection.
Peter bites his bottom lip while undressing Debbie with his eyes. "Are you my homework? Because I wanna slam you on a desk and do you twice because I put my name in the wrong place.” He knows with just one glance he has won her over. “Stupid geography test….”
Oh, God, what had she gotten herself into? Debbie thinks as her inner goddess applauses and pats Deb on the shoulder. Good girl, you got them to prove their points! Now, go get them!  “You guys are to the point.”
“Nope, it’s amazing how long we can last,” Steve adds. Deb's mind echoes the previous question, she thought to herself.
Steve and Bucky exchange glances. Buck nods towards Peter. “I’m game. Pete, how about you?”
“Anything Deb wants is perfect with me. Besides, a hottie in my bed is always well-treated.” His lust-filled eyes run over her body. Debbie backs up nervously while her inner goddess is giving a fist pump.
Steve salutes up to her, grabbing hold of her waistband, not letting her back away from him. His lips meld with hers and that’s all it takes for her to melt. Bucky and Pete senses it immediately, stripping quickly. She’s lost in his kiss as he backs her up to the small dinette table. He lifts her effortlessly upon the table and then pulls off her pants.
"I'm buying you skirts from now on," Bucky whispers into Debbie’s ear as his teeth nip at her neck.
Peter hastily unbuttons her blouse and the intimate lacy articles underneath. They are discarded to the floor, allowing him to enjoy a beautiful view. His eagerness slowed as he cups her soft breasts, admiring them. “Fuck, your tits are beautiful, baby.” Debbie gasps as he latches his mouth on the right, giving it the love it deserves as his hand plays with her left nipple.
Debbie’s fingers immediately go to Peter’s hair, tugging it gently, not wanting him to stop. As Peter moans during the act, the reverberations and sound causes the desire to pool in her lower abdomen.
Steve kneels before her. His naughty tongue circles her clit as two fingers dive into her divine wetness. “Fuck baby, all this for us?” Bucky palms his hard cock while his wet tongue dances with Debbie’s.
She tilts her head backwards, a breathy “Ye-yes,” falling from her lips.
“Yes, what?” He demands. His thumb hovering over her sensitive nub, she could feel the heat from him but him not touching her clit caused her to whine.
“Y-es, Captain,”  she answers obediently.
“Good girl.”  Steve then rubs his thumb in circular motions on her clitoris. Giving the good girl what she deserves.
“Buck mmm — you need to feel how tight her pussy is.”
“You want me to do that, baby girl?” Bucky husks against the shell of her ear, before nipping her lobe.
“Mm yes, Sergeant.”
“Which hand?”
“Left,” she stutters.
“Looks like our girl has a metal arm kink.” He moves to kneel beside Steve, who has removed his fingers, while keeping his hot tongue teasing her roused pearl.  Cool metal fingers dive into her warm pussy, causing an excited shudder to radiate through her body. “You’re so wet, Draga.” Buck curls his long fingers, pumping them slowly at first, then faster.
Debbie moans loudly, giving Peter’s tongue the chance to slither in and kiss her deeply. The sensual sounds from her causes his arousal to harden. Eagerly, he swallows each of her moans while he grasps his cock. “Looks like we are finding more kinks,” he states after breaking the kiss.
The overstimulation from the men sends desire coursing through her veins as she comes undone under the special care of her lovers. Bucky maintains eye contact with her, removes his fingers and licks them.
Peter picks Debbie up, carrying her into his bedroom as the others follow.  He lays her on the bed like an honored porn star as the three climb onto the mattress. Deb sits up, motioning to the men with a come hither finger, scooting back with a teasing smile.
Peter grabs her ankle, pulling her gently toward the three as she giggles. “Baby, tell us what you want.” Her eyes darken with excitement.
“I want you to fuck my mouth. Steve to fuck my pussy and Bucky to fuck my ass.”
Steve’s eyes darken as he gets comfortable on the bed. He pats his lap pulling Debbie to straddle his waist. She runs her eyes over his girth's length. “All aboard, Sweetheart, it’s all yours.” She leans down to kiss him as her fair falls around his face like a veil. Her pussy welcoming his length as one would a long-lost friend. Steve places his hands upon her waist.
Bucky grabs the lube from the nightstand, running a generous amount over his flesh, fingers pumping them into her ass. Deb whimpers as he replaces them with his cock.  Steve begins to thrust upward and Bucky inward.
Peter moves close holding his weeping cock to her lips. Deb licks her lips and then takes him into her moist mouth. “Ohhh fuck,” he curses,as he grasps her hair and tugs it tightly.
Pornographic noises radiate through the small space. Steve helps her ride him with ease. Bucky thrusts into his lover, making sure they are both satisfied. Peter fucks her mouth, hitting the back of her throat. The way her body takes each man has them panting. Steve’s cock presses against her sweet spot while Deb bucks her hips backwards towards Bucky. Her body is close to unbridled passion.
Steve fondles her breasts, moaning while Bucky reaches around to rub her clit. Peter places one hand on her neck, adding a small amount of pressure. One more thrust has her body quaking around her lovers. Steve and Bucky have filled her with their cum, nestled deep inside her.  The warm sensation causes Debbie to moan loudly around Peter's cock. He hits the back of her throat, his hot cum coating its prize.
Debbie collapses, her body spent.   Steve cuddles her close to his chest as they come down from their highs. Fingertips run gently over her back.
Bucky retrieves a wet cloth for each cleaning Debbie first. She hums gratefully, keeping her eyes closed as the moist fabric grazes her lady parts.  He lays down beside Steve resting a hand on Debbie’s ass. Peter lies on the opposite side of Steve beside Debbie, resting his arm around her waist.
“Hi, princess—” Peter brushes her sweaty hair out of her face, kissing her gently on her lips. Steve plants a kiss upon her forehead, as well as Bucky.
“Mmm, hi,” she opens her eyes slightly, gazing upon Peter’s face.
“Rest, we’ll be here when you wake up,” Peter reassures her. Deb smiles softly, her eyes fluttering close. It’s only moments before falling asleep in her lovers arms.

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Juniper Keen (Nonbinary OC)
Summary: Bucky's first time being naked in front of someone he trusts.
TWs: vague mentions to Bucky's time at HYDRA, Nonsexual Nudity, cuddling, fluff, Pet names (Baby, Honey, Baby Boy), Bucky gets a lil emotional at the end but it's fluffy I promise
A/N: this is my first bit of writing I've posted on here, and I'm excited to share! This is a story from later on in Juniper and Bucky's relationship, they've been together officially about a year now. Originally I wanted to go in some sort of chronological order, but then I realized it's my blog and I can do whatever I want, so my Oneshots will definitely be bouncing around timeline-wise. I'm still working on a Series about Juniper and Bucky's time at HYDRA, and it's my hope to get it up soon!
-------------------------------------------------------
“I need your help.”
Juniper's gray eyes flicked up from the goat they were feeding to meet Bucky's eyes, filled with a storm of uncertainty and nerves. They reached up and cupped his face.
“Of course Bucky, anything.” His eyes fluttered shut when they began to stroke his cheekbone, “what's wrong?”
“I, uh, I'm…” the Soldier's cheeks turned a deep scarlet, eyes refusing to meet theirs, “I want to…”
He sighed, running his remaining hand through his hair. Juniper could see him chewing his lip.
“Hey,” they gently guided his face to theirs, “you don't have to be worried, Baby. Anything you need, it's yours. All you have to do is ask.”
“I know. It's just…” he took a deep breath, “it's hard.”
Juniper stood on their tiptoes to kiss the bridge of his nose, but was nearly knocked over by an impatient female goat. Bucky caught them in his arm, helping them to their feet.
“You take your time, Buck.” They smiled, “in the meantime, do you wanna help me feed the goats? I think Saffron is gonna go for the kneecaps if she doesn't get her breakfast.”
He chuckled softly, taking the feed from his partner and using it to fill the buckets. The two were nearly done when Bucky finally blurted, “I want to be naked in front of you.”
Juniper just about dropped the bucket in their hand, looking up at their partner with wide eyes.
“You…what?”
“It’s not for sex, I don't… I don't want that,” he refused to look them in the eyes, “I just want to get better about… about being naked in front of someone. Someone I trust. At HYDRA, being…uh, not having clothes on meant pain. They asked, ordered, me to strip before hosing me down after a mission. Or to beat me if I… if I fucked up especially bad on an assignment. And you know I had to take my shirt off when they worked on my arm. Sometimes they would order me to do it just because they could. I think it was part of how they showed power over me.”
“Oh, Baby…,” Juniper cooed, tucking a stray strand of hair behind his ear, “I'm so sorry.”
“I just.. want to do it in front of someone I know isn't going to hurt me.” he explained, leaning into their warm hand on his cheek, “I want it to be you.”
They nodded.
“Okay.” The Shapeshifter whispered, “if this… if this is something you want to do Baby, I'll do it. You know I will.”
He took a deep breath, grounding himself.
“I do. I want to… I want to do it.” Bucky finally dared himself to look them in the eyes, hoping they could see how serious he was, “I trust you.”
They nodded, brushing the hair from his eyes.
“Okay, alright Honey. We'll do this.” Juniper's fingers traced through his long locks, “we can do it tonight, is that okay?”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
***
“You ready, Baby?” Juniper asked. Bucky nodded, biting his lip.
“I think so,” he murmured. They nodded, gently cupping his face with both hands.
“Hey, look at me, Buck,” he stared deep into their silver eyes, “if we’re gonna do this, I need you to use your words. I can’t just take nods or headshakes, okay? I need explicit verbal consent.”
“Okay.”
Juniper pressed a kiss to the bridge of his nose.
“Let’s start slow, okay?” they said, “can I untie your hair?”
The man started to nod but stopped.
“Yes.”
Bucky closed his eyes as Juniper’s hands found their way into his dark locks, taking a deep breath. Their fingers slowly undid the elastic, allowing his hair to fall free and brush against his shoulders. Juniper gently combed it out with one hand, starting with the shorter hairs by his nape and making their way up to the longer strands. When the man slowly forced his eyes open, he found Juniper smiling softly at him.
“You’re doing so good, Buck, you’re doing great.”
The Shapeshifter put their hand over his racing heart. They gently stroked it along his chest, their fingers ghosting over his toned pectoral.
“Do you want me to take your shirt off now?” They asked.
“Yes.”
Juniper’s hands ran the full length of his chest, down to the hem of his shirt. The Soldier’s breath hitched when he felt them grab it.
“Buck?” there was so much concern in their eyes, “is this okay, Baby Boy?”
“Yes,” the soft nickname made Bucky blush, “keep going. I need this.”
“Okay.”
Juniper gently slipped his shirt over his head, depositing it on the floor. Bucky’s eyes found the ground. His cheeks were getting hot. This was the first time anyone had seen the scars on his body. At least, the first time Bucky had been in his right mind when someone saw his scars. He had vague memories of being forced to strip in front of HYDRA technicians, doctors, and soldiers, and of Juniper tending to the wounds on his bare back after a particularly savage whipping. But he wasn’t himself when that had happened. He couldn’t feel the nerves of being bare in front of someone, or the humiliation of being forced to strip naked by people who wanted to hurt him. And he definitely couldn’t feel the shame and embarrassment that he was feeling now. Juniper noticed this, and gently cupped his face, bringing it up so he was looking them in the eyes.
“Here Baby,” they slipped off their own shirt, tossing it aside and bringing his sole hand to touch their chest, “will me doing this with you make you more comfortable?”
“I think so,” the soldier allowed himself to smile ever so slightly.
“Good, I’m glad.” they cupped his face, “do you want to move on to your pants, or…?”
Bucky wrapped them in his one remaining arm and pulled them close, a deep sigh escaping him as he relished the warmth of their bare skin against his own.
“Can we just stay like this for a bit?” He asked shyly.
“Of course, Baby Boy,” Juniper’s arms wrapped around him in turn, their hands running the length of his spine, taking inventory of the scars on his back, “we’ll stay like this as long as you want, okay?”
“Thank you…”
They stayed holding each other for some time, Juniper rubbing Bucky’s back while he pressed kisses into their hair, until finally he forced himself to unwind from their embrace.
“I think… I think I'm ready to keep going.” He gave his partner a nervous smile. Juniper nodded, kissing the bridge of his nose.
“You're doing so good Bucky, I'm so proud of you.” Their hand migrated to the waistband of his pants, “are you ready?”
Bucky swallowed hard.
“I-I think so.”
“Bucky, Honey, I need you to be sure.”
He took a deep breath, nodding.
“I'm ready.” He said.
Juniper nodded, slowly sliding off his pants before taking off their own, leaving both of them in nothing more than their underwear.
“Are you ready for your underwear or do you need a little time?”
“No,” Bucky puffed his chest out, “no. I'm ready.”
“Alright Sweetheart, if you're sure.”
“I am.”
Juniper slid off their own undergarments, now naked in front of him. Their hands touched the hem of his boxers, their gray eyes searching his face for any signs of discomfort. Bucky just nodded. He felt the fabric slide down his legs, stepping out of them when Juniper instructed him to. The soldier stood in front of his partner completely bare, his body on full display. Bucky’s face was turning red, he could feel it, but Juniper simply cupped his face and smiled softly.
“Are you okay, Buck?” They kissed his cheek.
“I am.” He nodded, fighting the urge to make a grab for his boxers. Part of him wanted to snatch his underwear back and pull them on, but the other part didn't want Juniper to lose the pure pride and adoration in their eyes. They smiled.
“Do you want to lay down?” The Shapeshifter motioned to the bed, gently pushing him to lay back on it when Bucky nodded.
“Would you mind if I was on top of you?” Juniper asked, “not in a sex way, just…”
“I know. I would love that, actually.”
The Shapeshifter nodded, settling on top of him so they were straddling his hips.
“Can I touch you?” They asked.
“Please.”
Juniper's hands began to run along his chest, their fingers tracing along the hard planes of his body. Bucky had never felt more exposed. He thought he should be afraid. Being in such a vulnerable position should be terrifying for him. God knows any sort of vulnerability he showed at HYDRA was met with abuse, punishment, pain. But something about this, about Juniper exploring his body with feather light touches, it soothed him. He didn't understand how anyone could be so gentle with him. How anyone could see the scars that were permanently carved into his skin and still look at him like he was something precious, something worthy of love. And yet here Juniper was, caressing the parts of him that had endured unimaginable pain with the utmost care. The thin slashes that came from knives, circular indents from bullets, marred masses of scar tissue that he didn't remember getting and couldn't even begin to decipher where they'd come from. But the ones that caught their attention were two that looked like lightning, flowing out from a common point in brilliant fractals along either side of his body. They reached out their hand, looking to Bucky for consent before letting their fingers drag along the raised skin.
"Taser. Or, high-powered cattle prod is probably a better description," the soldier said after a long moment, seeing Juniper's confused face he added, "it was one of their favorite methods of shutting me up when they were breaking me. 'Kept using it after I was the Soldier. It was a go-to punishment for handlers when they thought I misbehaved. Sometimes they just did it because they knew I couldn't fight back."
"Oh, Bucky…" Juniper pressed a kiss to the two matching scars, first his left then his right. They traced their fingers along the jagged marks.
“You're so beautiful,” they whispered, “my Beautiful Bucky…”
“You don't have to lie.”
“I'm not lying,” their fingers traced a long slash across his stomach, “your scars show everything you've been through. How brave and strong you've been. And I think they're beautiful for that. You're so beautiful, Baby Boy. So strong, so brave, and so, so beautiful.”
A sob caught into Bucky’s throat. No one had ever called him that before. He vaguely remembered being called “handsome” back in the day, and kind old ladies in Bucharest whose groceries he'd carried had called him “good looking” or “a lovely young gentleman”. But never ‘beautiful’. Juniper cupped his face, thumbing away the tears he hadn't realized were falling.
“What's wrong Baby?” They asked, “Do you want to stop?”
He shook his head.
“I-it's not that,” Bucky leaned into their hand, “I… I've never been called ‘beautiful’ before. And I've… nobody's ever touched me like this. No one's been gentle like this. And it...It just feels so good.”
“Oh, Sweetheart,” they pulled him into a hug, weaving their fingers into his hair. Bucky buried his face in their neck as their fingers began to gently stroke his long locks, trying to hide the fact more tears were slipping down his face. It broke Juniper's heart, how the slightest bit of praise was enough to make him cry. They'd never know what perceived affront this kind, gentle, loving, beautiful man had committed against the universe to earn him the lot that he had in life, but whatever it was he didn't deserve it. He deserved kindness and safety and gentleness and love. After everything he had endured, Bucky deserved the fucking world in their eyes. They hugged him close to their bare chest.
“The world's been so cruel to you, hasn't it Sweetheart?” He nodded, face not leaving the crook of their neck. Juniper gently stroked his hair, “I’m sorry, Baby. I'm so sorry. You didn't deserve to be treated like that, you didn't deserve to be abused, or taught to think so low of yourself. You are good, Bucky. You're sweet and kind and patient and gentle and so, so, so beautiful. Inside and out. Always have been, always will be. And I'm going to spend the rest of our lives reminding you of that. I promise.”
“I love you,” Bucky whispered, “so much.”
“I love you too Buck. You deserve the world, the fucking universe, god dammit. And I'll do everything I can to give it to you.”
-------------------------------------------------------
True to form I have no idea how to end it 😅 but yeah, that's my first posted writing for Juniper x Bucky! I have a lot of stuff written that I haven't posted anywhere, depending on how people feel about this one I might post others. I have no idea how this turned out, I'm pretty happy with it but feel free to leave thoughts/constructive criticism!!

I. The Bucharest Ballet
The newspaper in his hand began to shake as his hand involuntarily trembled. Nervously he looked around, at the passersby on the street going about their day, the policemen patrolling the sidewalks. With a clenched jaw, he dropped the newspaper and moved to get off the street. Someone else would see him, someone like the man at the newspaper stand who had fled for his life. He needed to go.
Bucky hesitated at the floor of his apartment. Something was wrong, someone was already in there. And soon more would be coming. He could take one hostile and escape, run as far as he could. But when he entered his apartment, he didn’t expect to see that man again. The man from D.C., the one he learned about in a museum. The man he once knew in his old life. He was going through his notebook, he must’ve sensed his presence cause the man turned to face him. He slightly softened, the notebook still held in his hand. The shield in the other.
“You know me?” He asked, Bucky thought for a moment. His gaze locked on the man,
“You’re Steve. I read about you in a museum.” He blinked, looking down at the notebook Steve now gently placed on the table.
“I know you’re nervous.” He started. “And you have plenty of reason to be. But you’re lying.”
Bucky grit his teeth,
“I wasn’t in Vienna, I don’t do that anymore.” Steve opened his mouth as if to say something but stopped, his attention turning to the window to his right.
“Well, the people who think you did are coming here now. And they’re not planning on taking you alive.” He said, there was urgency in his voice. Bucky remained stoic,
“That’s smart. Good strategy.” Bucky shifted his feet and there was a low thudding sound coming from above. Footsteps, hostiles on the roof, more in the stairwell.
“This doesn’t have to end in a fight, Buck.” Steve tried to reason. Bucky sighed, looking down and taking the black glove off revealing his metal hand.
“It always ends in a fight.” The resignation in his voice made Steve’s shoulders sink.
The sound of voices resounded from outside the door. Men were starting to yell and scream, followed by rapid gunfire. Bucky looked to Steve in confusion,
“Who else did you bring with you?” He asked.
“No one.” Steve shook his head. The noise continued and grew more and more violent. Until the door to the apartment smashed open, the body of a Romanian officer flying across the floor. Steve lifted his shield and Bucky looked for his easiest escape. Whatever was about to come through the door was strong, probably about as strong as him. He didn’t hurt people anymore and he wasn’t about to break that vow. A figure, dressed in sleek black launched into the room. Kicking Steve who deflected the blow with his shield but still went soaring backwards into the kitchen. The figure, now on it’s feet stood tall. It was a woman, her black hair cut above her shoulders. She turned to face Bucky, her face void of emotion. Much like him, who he used to be. But her eyes, those eyes. He knew those eyes. He stumbled for a moment and she lunged forwards. She was fast and she knew all his moves. She dodged every punch, every kick every attempt to subdue. And she retaliated in full force, he knew this training. It was his training. It was his moves.
Steve stood up from the rubble in the kitchen, watching what looked like a well choreographed dance happening in front of him. He had to get Bucky out of here, he knew that much, but he also wanted to know who this woman was. So he charged her, giving Bucky time to escape.
“Go!” Steve yelled, Bucky didn’t hesitate. He smashed his hand through the floorboards, pulling out a backpack and took off. Steve turned his attention back to the mysterious woman, she stood up from wall he had just smashed her into. There was no stopping her, Steve knew this now.
“Sam, can you hear me?”
“I hear you.”
“We gotta problem.”
The woman took one long glance at Steve before she brought her leg up again to kick him in the chest. Sending Steve backwards once again, but she didn’t keep attacking. She ran. The same direction Bucky had disappeared.
“This isn’t good.”
