“Oh, dear.” Jemma glances at the clock hanging on the secret base’s kitchen wall. She’s packing sandwiches and water bottles into a lunch bag. Her arms are moving faster than Daisy and Leo have ever seen.
“Why is she in such a hurry?” Daisy mumbles as she and Leo stare at her from the other side of the room.
Shrugging, Leo glances at the clock. It’s five minutes over 3 pm. “She’s always going somewhere during this time. Don’t know where though.”
“Should we follow her?”
“No.” Leo scrunches his brows together, turning to look at Daisy. “She’d be mad at us.”
“Come on. It’s not like we have anything better to do.”
Leo glances at Jemma, who closes her bag and starts walking out of the base. He knows Daisy will follow her either way and he is very curious to see where the biochemist is off to every single day. “Fine.” He turns back to Daisy, but she is already out the door. “Hey, wait for me!”
Jemma is half running towards a small park. She’s holding onto her bag tightly, not wanting to shake it too much so the sandwiches would stay together. Her breathing is starting to pick up from the fast pace and panic of time going too fast. She doesn’t want to be late.
She lets out a breath of relief when she notices the painter sitting on a small bench with a canvas on an easel in front of her. Jemma smiles at the sight. She stops slightly further away, taking in the painting. It’s not ready yet, but it’s clearly a small hut in the middle of a field of flowers.
The painter dips her paintbrush to red before gently pressing the tip of it to the canvas, painting small flowers.
Taking a deep breath in and out, Jemma walks over to her. “Hey, Y/N.” She smiles, sitting next to her and setting the bag down to the ground. “I’m sorry for being late. I lost track of time.”
“Jemma, you don’t need to show up here every day.” Y/N giggles quietly, glancing at her before turning back to the painting.
“Then who would bring you lunch, hm?” Jemma takes the lunch bag out, showing the sandwiches to Y/N.
Putting the brush down, Y/N gives her full attention to Jemma. “Whatever would I do without you.” She takes one of the sandwiches and bites into it, closing her eyes as she hums. “So good.”
Jemma laughs, starting to eat her own sandwich. As they eat and talk together, Daisy and Leo are spying on them from a bench further away. “Is that her friend or friend.” Daisy mumbles mostly to herself. She’s squinting her eyes to see better.
“What- What’s the difference?” Leopold frowns.
Daisy rolls her eyes. “Are they just friends or dating? Or maybe friends with benefits, Jemma is full of surprises.”
Choking on his spit, Leo starts coughing. Daisy shushes him immediately, not wanting to give up their position. “Shut up!” She whisper yells.
“I’m choking!” He whisper yells back, patting his own back.
“Choke quieter then.” After getting air to his lungs properly again, he stares at her with wide eyes. “Lets go talk to them.” Daisy stands up and starts walking towards them.
“But you just said…” With a groan, Leo decides to stay quiet and follow her.
“Do you like it?” Y/N nods towards the painting. “Don’t judge it too harshly, it’s not ready yet.” She lets out an airy laugh, nervous what Jemma thinks. She really cares about her opinion.
However, before Jemma can answer, Daisy walks up to them. “I think it’s great!” She smiles widely.
Jemma’s eyes widen. “Oh no.” She whispers.
“I’m Daisy, Jemma’s friend.” Daisy shakes Y/N’s hand.
“Hi, I’m Y/N.” She smiles, glancing at Jemma quickly, not entirely sure what’s going on. “You are also with Shield?”
“Yes! This is Fitz.” Daisy points at Leo. “Well, it’s Leopold, but everyone calls him Fitz.” He gives her a small wave and smile, fully preferring to be anywhere else than here right now.
“Oh!” Y/N turns to look at Jemma. “You two are FitzSimmons.”
“Yes.” Jemma laughs quite awkwardly. She really didn’t think she’d have to introduce Y/N to her friends just yet. “Uhm, what are you doing here?” She turns to look at the pair.
“Oh, you know.” Daisy waves her hand around. “We were just walking around and noticed you and your friend here, and decided to come say hi.”
Jemma blushes at the way Daisy says the word friend, clearly getting the innuendo behind it. “Right. Well, isn’t that nice.” She gives them a tight lipped smile. “Thanks for stopping by.”
Daisy raises her brows, grinning at the way Jemma is being. She definitely knows now which kind of friend Y/N is. “Why don’t you come to the base with us?” She looks at Y/N, completely ignoring Jemma mouthing What are you doing? to her.
Y/N glances at her painting supplies. “I think I have a bit too much stuff for that.” She laughs.
“Right.” Daisy nods. “Tomorrow?”
Biting her lip, Y/N turns to Jemma. She wouldn’t mind meeting her friends, but if Jemma isn’t comfortable with that, she doesn’t want to do it. “Sure, of course.” Jemma smiles, nodding a bit too long. “That’d be great.”
“Awesome!” Daisy grins, showing her teeth. “We will see you tomorrow then. Have fun you too, use protection!” She grabs Leo’s hand and starts pulling him away before Jemma can scold them.
“Oh my god.” She presses her eyes closed, fully turning red while Y/N giggles quietly. “I am so sorry. I honestly had no idea they’d find us here.”
“It’s okay, Jemma.” Y/N sets her hand on Jemma’s arm. “Your friends are cool.” She shrugs, picking up the paintbrush again. Her nerves are starting to grow again. “I really don’t need to come if you don’t want me to.”
“Oh no, no, no. I do want you to.” Jemma reassures. “I just wasn’t sure if we were at that point yet. This is all very new still.” She sighs, grabbing the brush from Y/N’s hand and putting it to the side before taking hold of both her hands. “But I am very serious about this and I want you to meet my family.”
Y/N smiles. “You’ll pick me up tomorrow then?”
“I will. At three o’clock?”
“Yes.”
“It’s settled then.” Jemma pecks her lips and lets her get back to her painting.
“I want to see your lab then.” Y/N comments as she cleans up her brush to switch colors. “You’ve talked about it so much.”
“Oh definitely. You’ll love it.” Jemma’s smile is wide as she starts talking about the lab. Although, Y/N doesn’t understand a lot about science, she loves to hear Jemma talk about it so passionately. Just like Jemma loves to listen to Y/N ramble about art.
They might be different from each other, but they truly fit together perfectly.
