Gone too soon
On average 1.8 people on earth die every second... We are not created or destroyed, we are constantly transferred, shifted, and renewed. Everything we are is given to us. Death does not come when the body is too exhausted to live, death comes because the brilliance inside of us can only be contained for so long. We do not die, we pass on.

With the school year back in session, Connor had taken every opportunity to throw himself back into his school work. He knew he needed to prepare considering just how important this year was going to be for him and a part of that meant he had re-opened his homework business. While it certainly hadn’t done him any favors in regards to focusing on his own work, it kept his mind fresh in subjects he was positive he would have otherwise completely forgotten about. Repetition had been the key his grandmother had always taught him in all their time studying together. She hadn’t been around much recently after his cousin Freddy’s wedding. Being around so many relatives they hadn’t seen in years made her realize how much she’d missed them which meant she’d been off doing a bit of traveling to spend time with as many as she could. Connor didn’t mind too much. Of course it meant he was the one having to drive too and from all of his fathers appointment, but thankfully spending extra time with him was never something that bothered him much.
His pen was tapping feverishly as he awaited the bell. He knew he’d get to see Mia during lunch and after all the Calculus homework he’d been doing during the first two periods he was craving the distraction. Mr. Levay had been going over some chemical compounds that Connor had little interest in as his eyes fixated on the clock. His attention only drawn when the principal arrived in the door of their classroom. Of course Connor hadn’t thought much of it. For all he knew he was just stopping in too see how things were going. He would have just as quickly returned his attention to the clock when his name was called from the front of the room. His brows furrowed as he looked at the principal. “Uh okay.” He said quickly, grabbing his backpack as he’d been told and heading to the front of the room. The Brain ignored the whispers that were coming from the other students as he followed the principal out of the classroom.
Connor’s heartbeat in his chest as he tried to figure out why he had been pulled out of class. His first thought being that someone had finally turned him in for helping other students cheat on their homework. He had been doing it for as long as he could remember and had become fairly comfortable with it, but maybe he had become too relaxed. His brain started reeling, trying to go over the paper’s he’d turned in. He was always careful to write his name at the top right before turning it in to avoid turning in someone else’s assignment. Blank name meant it was for his own work.
He was about to take a seat in the principal’s office when the older man grabbed his shoulder to stop him. Connor felt as though his heart had somehow moved from his chest to his head. He could hear it pounding and panic swirled it’s ugly head when the principal explained why he had pulled him out of class. Tears welled up in his eyes and without giving the man any other chance to explain, he dropped his backpack and ran out of the office. The sound of his feet hitting the pavement and the soft cry of someone calling out to him felt like they were millions of miles away as he fumbled with his keys that he’d thankfully kept in his pocket. His hands were shaking as he jumped in the car and sped off out of the parking lot.
The drive would have normally taken about half an hour but Connor had it down to 15 minutes when driving at top speed. His mind felt like a tunnel as he pushed through the hospital entrance, running past the front desk. The nurse called out for him but he’d spent enough time there to know exactly where they’d always kept him. When you spend as much time in the emergency room as his family had, it became almost second nature. He knew a majority of the nurses and a majority of them knew him. Fortunately he’d played cards with the woman at the desk more times than he could count and he knew he’d be met with little hassle as he pushed through the doors that lead to the different patients rooms. Familiar smells filled his nostrils and had him feeling especially nauseous now more than they normally did.
When he got to his dad’s usual room he cursed under his breath to find it empty. He turned and spotted one of the familiar doctors down the hall and took off running at top speed to grab the man by his coat. The brain had hardly noticed the tears that had been spilling onto his cheeks, but the doctor sure did as he offered Connor a paper towel and a solemn look. “Where the fuck is he?” He demanded as he smacked away the paper towel and wiped at his eyes. “Tell me everything.” The doctor stood for a moment, looking at him as if he were some sort of wounded animal. The older man nodded slightly and motioned for Connor to follow after him.
As he followed him down the hall he was lead towards a wing of the hospital he’d surprisingly never been to. In it, it seemed as though a majority of the rooms were empty until they came to one at the end of the hall. Connor waited for the doctor to open the door for him and hesitated before stepping inside. “Dad?” He cried out as he ran to his father’s side and grabbed at the man’s hand. There was something different happening here though. This wasn’t the normal scenario he’d walked in on when they told him they’d needed him there. His dad’s eyes remained closed and his body laid limp against the hospital bed. Connor’s mind tried to make sense of it, tried to convince himself that his father was asleep, or that this had been some kind of nightmare. He brought his hands up to cover his ears, as the doctor’s words rang in his head. “We were unable to resuscitate him. We did everything we could. I’m so sorry.” The apology stuck out to him. It all felt so fake and was causing his entire being to shake. In an instant he felt himself fall back into one of the chairs, tears rushing down his cheeks as his brain yelled for him to wake up. This wasn’t happening. He’d fallen asleep at his desk surely. He was home in bed and any moment he’d wake up and this would be just another nightmare. But as the minutes past and beeping from one of the monitors became a painful informant that he was in fact very much awake. The beeps reminded him of an audience, rushing from his fathers chest in single file, leaving his body to wrap themselves around Connor in a windstorm.
Connor reached to take his fathers hand once again, unable to help himself as his memories flashed to the day his mom had left them. He remembered watching one by one as every other kid in his class got picked up. On any other day she’d always been there. She’d be there waiting for him outside the gate. She’d ask him how his day was, scold him for cutting all the crust off his bread and leaving it in his lunch box and squeeze his hand tightly any time they needed to cross the street. It was their routine. She’d never missed a day until the fateful day that she wasn’t there. He’d waited for three hours up in the front office after the school day had ended when his dad had finally shown up. His dad with tears in his eyes as he had to explain to his 4 year old son that his mother had abandoned them. Everyday since, they’d been a team. Even when his grandmother came to live with them, his dad had always made sure to be the one to pick him up until he fell ill. The very illness that now had taken the only other parent Connor had left.

Let's define a CSS utility library as a stylesheet with many classes available to do small little one-off things. Like classes to adjust margin or padding. Classes to set colors. Classes to set specific layout properties. Classes for sizing. Utility libraries may approach these things in different ways, but seem to share that idea. Which, in essence, brings styling to the HTML level rather than the CSS level. The stylesheet becomes a dev dependency that you don't really touch. Using ONLY a utility library vs. sprinkling in utilities One of the ways you can use a utility library like the ones to follow as an add-on to whatever else you're doing with CSS. These projects tend to have different philosophies, and perhaps don't always encourage that, but of course, you can do whatever you want. You could call that sprinkling in a utility library, and you might end up with HTML like: Tweener :( Forgive a little opinion-having here, but to me, this seems like something that will feel good in the moment, and then be regrettable later. Instead of having all styling done by your own named classes, styling information is now scattered. Some styling information applied directly in the HTML via the utility classes, and some styling is applied through your own naming conventions and CSS. The other option is to go all in on a utility library, that way you've moved all styling information away from CSS and into HTML entirely. It's not a scattered system anymore. I can't tell you if you'll love working with an all in utility library approach like this or not, but long-term, I imagine you'll be happier picking either all-in or not-at-all than a tweener approach. This is one of the definitions of Atomic CSS You can read about that here. You could call using a utility library to do all your styling a form of "static" atomic CSS. That's different from a "programatic" version, where you'd process markup like this: Lorem ipsum And out would come CSS that accommodates that. Utility Libraries Lemme just list a bunch of them that I've come across, pick out some quotes of what they have to say about themselves, and a code sample. Shed.css Shed.css came about after I got tired of writing CSS. All of the CSS in the world has already been written, and there's no need to rewrite it in every one of our projects. Goal: To eliminate distraction for developers and designers by creating a set of options rather than encouraging bikeshedding, where shed gets its name. Log In Tachyons Create fast loading, highly readable, and 100% responsive interfaces with as little CSS as possible. 27 July, 2015 Too many tools and frameworks The definitive guide to the JavaScript tooling landscape in 2015. Basscss Using clear, humanized naming conventions, Basscss is quick to internalize and easy to reason about while speeding up development time with more scalable, more readable code. Basscss v8.0.2 Low-Level CSS Toolkit 2.13 KB Beard A CSS framework for people with better things to do Beard's most popular and polarizing feature is its helper classes. Many people feel utility classes like the ones that Beard generates for you leads to bloat and are just as bad as using inline styles. We've found that having a rich set of helper classes makes your projects easier to build, easier to reason, and more bulletproof. Tools Beard isn't packed full of every feature you might need, but it does come with a small set of mixins to make life easier. appearance() turretcss Developed for design, turretcss is a styles and browser behaviour normalisation framework for rapid development of responsive and accessible websites. Elements A guide to the use of HTML elements and turretcss's default styling definitions including buttons, figure, media, nav, and tables. Expressive CSS Classes are for visual styling. Tags are for semantics. Start from a good foundation of base html element styles. Use utility classes for DRY CSS. Class names should be understandable at a glance. Responsive layout styling should be easy (fun even). Principles Do classes need to be ‘semantic’? Easy to understand + Easy to add/remove = Expressive Tailwind CSS A Utility-First CSS Framework for Rapid UI Development This thing doesn't even exist yet and they have more than 700 Twitter followers. That kind of thing convinces me there is a real desire for this stuff that shouldn't be ignored. We can get a peak at their promo site though: Utility Libraries as Style Guides Marvel As Marvel continues to grow, both as a product and a company, one challenge we are faced with is learning how to refine the Marvel brand identity and apply it cohesively to each of our products. We created this styleguide to act as a central location where we house a live inventory of UI components, brand guidelines, brand assets, code snippets, developer guidelines and more. Aspect Ratio Solid Solid is BuzzFeed's CSS style guide. Influenced by frameworks like Basscss, Solid uses immutable, atomic CSS classes to rapidly prototype and develop features, providing consistent styling options along with the flexibility to create new layouts and designs without the need to write additional CSS. WTF is Solid? What is Solid? Installation npm install --save bf-solid Download Source Files This is separate-but-related to the idea of CSS-in-JS The tide in JavaScript has headed strongly toward components. Combining HTML and JavaScript has felt good to a lot of folks, so it's not terribly surprising to see styling start to come along for the ride. And it's not entirely just for the sake of it. There are understandable arguments for it, including things like the global nature of CSS leading toward conflicts and unintended side effects. If you can style things in such a way that never happens (which doesn't mean you need to give up on CSS entirely), I admit I can see the appeal. This idea of styling components at the JavaScript level does seem to largely negate the need for utility libraries. Probably largely a one or the other kind of thing. So you need a CSS utility library? is a post from CSS-Tricks
