The 5G Plan Pertaining to Cassandra Cain

I was reading Bleeding Cool’s “5G” (Five Generations) six-chapter columns on the original plan for the event. Pertaining to the Bat-Family was fascinating... 

So the first chapter dealt with the Batman side of things of what originally what co-publisher Dan DiDio wanted from James Tynion IV when he came onboard to write the Batman ongoing.

The curious things that gets me is the way the phrasing is structured. So at the time period early 2020, we had Batman: Pennyworth #1 (which was the fallout) written by Tynion and Pete Tomasi:

This is probably the closest we got to the 5G plan seen in plain sight. We see “the cracks” mentioned above forming between Bruce, “Ric”, Jason, Damian, and Babs with Alfred’s passing (Cass was making sure Gotham was safe for the night without them along with the others who didn’t mourn). 

Pertaining to Cass though got me thinking about Batman & the Outsiders (by Bryan Edward Hill and mostly Dexter Soy) of that time period. Shiva was clearly pinning for Duke and Cass to be students under her and strike out on their own (though in this issue (#13) the art was by Gleb Melnikov.

It’s got me thinking. 

We know “originally” Cass (and Steph) weren’t going to become Batgirls in “Batman: Joker War”. It was all last minute add-ons. As we know when artist for Batman ongoing (at that time) Jorge Jiménez posted his original pencils for #100:

So it’s got me thinking. I wonder if Cass and Duke at the end of B&O instead chose to go with Shiva? I mean if the story was going to be told as such if Cass found out she be TICKED Bruce disrespecting the bat-symbol as such (even if DC never allowed her). 

Though, as usual with DC it just feels like a “blur” what would become of Cass in 5G. I mean just look at her “history” in the revealed established DC for it (again revealed via Bleeding Cool):

So let’s focus on the Cass portion:

The curious thing about this timeline is Cass is Batgirl from Years 7 to Year 11 (or 12) probably. It’s a bit of a blur as Year 12 is when Babs becomes Batgirl again:

Though if you’re noticing SOMEONE is left out being Batgirl during this period, Stephanie Brown. Yeah, DC was going to sweep her time period of Batgirl under the rug (but keep her time as Robin). 

Coincidentally, we see this in February 2020 with the Robin 80th Anniversary #1 special which has a Steph profile (and story). But it’s noticeable because SOMETHING is left out of it in the profile:

So what becomes of Cass in this 5G event? That is the rub. 

Chapter Five suggests this:

I doubt Cass would be involved given this is DiDio-run DC at this point and he sure LOVED to bury the character. We sure as heck know what 5G wanted to do with Damian.

But we know what truly happens. Dan DiDio gets the ax later that month (ironically of the C2E2 convention weekend).Cass/Steph instead become Batgirls again in Batman: Joker War (we get that revelation in June as Jiménez revealed he drew the Batman #100 page of Cass as Orphan in May):

That and we got another funeral for Alfred in #100 with the “whole family” at that time period (which had Cass in the background this time actively mourning the loss). 

Not to mention probably the best push the character has gotten since Z(at least I feel)-- Batgirl Vol. 1 ongoing was running.

This whole thing is a puzzle and a mystery pertaining to Cass (akin to some of the other things I’ve tried digging for in the past). One I always love to figuring out the missing pieces and getting answers.

I adored XJ9 and Amy Rose as a kid, and Lilo and Stitch got me to make me first sona. (There was a non-Christmas one, but I didnt like the pose, so presents it was! But it’s on my Birthday, so yeah.)

Update: i paid with card and the title mentioned Zepie/ze-pie, a user on here, and i realized the Carol & Tuesday print my brother came back was also from her thanks to a post, whoa! Cant find evidence of those charm designs on her blog, tho, so I won’t @ her. But she did have a post mentioning being at C2E2 in 2020. (which is a selfie, but I’m bad at faces…)

A Voice Clip I recorded on the late night of February 29, 2024, after I did a voice chat on Nintega Dario's Discord Server.

Microphone: Samson C03U Multi-Pattern (the same microphone that one of my animation idols, Alan Becker, creator of the Animator vs. Animation series uses to record his voice)

The following on here on who has recognized my voice: Grey DeLisle (voice actress) Nintega Dario (on his Discord server on his Voice Chat) Izabella Alvarez (actress and voice actress, known for her roles in Shameless, Westworld, Walk the Prank, and the current voice of Ronnie Anne Santiago in The Loud House, and it's former spin-off, The Casagrandes, on my public upload of my Cameo video from her where I announce and I appear physically at the end).

Fun Fact: Grey DeLisle and Nintega Dario were the first 2 people I got my chance to talk to in real time, as I did a video chat with Grey DeLisle from GalaxyCon Virtual back in 2022, and his on voice chat with Nintega Dario on his Discord server, where I talked to him. My conversation with them was used using the Samson C03U Multi-Pattern microphone and the Dell Inspiron 3501 (my current laptop computer with Windows 11 Operating System. When I got this back in 2021, it was originally a Windows 10 Operating System).

Soon this year, I might talk to Tara Strong in person when I'm at Chicago Comic & Entertainment (C2E2) Expo next month. This is to let anyone know more how my voice sounds like, even in real life if you see me in person.

Taboo Science Podcast: Where No Science Has Gone Before

Have you ever noticed that when TV goes large, podcasting goes small? TV wants to do a nature show? It's a wide-angle view of all animals, usually narrated by David Attenborough. Need a space show? How about something with Neil DeGrasse Tyson about the entire cosmos? 

By contrast, podcasting goes small. It burrows into a topic small in stature but not insignificant. Podcasting has shows about specific dolphin species, an entire podcast about the planet Jupiter, and, instead of a sports show about all sports, how about a podcast about one owner of one basketball team -- James Dolan of the NBA's New York Knicks? Check out Reign Of Error. 

Here is the marketing pitch from Taboo Science: "Taboo Science is a podcast that answers the questions you’re not allowed to ask. It’s hosted by Ashley Hamer, a science writer and podcaster. Every episode dives into a different societal taboo to understand the science that makes it tick, the reasons we don’t talk about it, and the impact that has on society at large. Why don’t we eat people? Why are my swear words different than my parents’? And what makes porn, porn? It’s science class if science class had one of those anonymous question boxes. It’s Taboo Science."

Ashley Hamer is a writer, podcaster, and science communicator in Chicago. She is the creator of Taboo Science and the former host and content lead of the science podcast Curiosity Daily. 

 When Hamer and Corey Gough co-host Curiosity Daily in the pre-COVID days, I thought they had solid hosting chemistry and brought a certain spontaneous wit to the show. The show has gone through several iterations of hosts, in search, I believe, of that special Hamer-Gough sauce. 

Hamer flying solo on Taboo Science is in complete control of the hosting cockpit. She's funny, smart, and a strong interviewer with a flair for the dramatic.

Hamer has interviewed the likes of Sean Carroll, Carl Zimmer, and Alan Alda, written and hosted a number of widely viewed science videos, appeared on several leading science podcasts, and spoken on stages everywhere from C2E2 and New York Comic Con to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and meetings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington, D.C. and Seattle, Washington.

Ashley Hamer is also a professional saxophonist, a Boston-qualified marathon runner, a new mom, and a cat person. Talk about your diversity of skills. I have questions. Can she play the saxophone while running a marathon? Is the cat jealous of the new baby? How does she have time to do a podcast? 

The podcast began in September 2020, and it didn't pull any punches in its first several episodes. Topics included pornography, profanity, cannibalism, penises, and vaginas. I can just sense the uptight people who are organizing bans.

Some of my favorite episodes include the March 25, 2021, one on Marriage with Stephanie Coontz. For those who crow about traditional marriage, you should listen to Coontz talk about the history of marriage as a business transaction instead of a bond created from love. 

A recent episode about Asexuality was a learning experience and fascinating and, of course, I can never pass up an episode on poop with Bryon Nelson. Here, Hamer breaks out internet-sourced euphemisms for poop while Nelson explains how for centuries people used "night soil" (poop) for fertilizer. 

If you, as a listener, are into your science being serious stuff with people with PhDs speaking in solemn tones, Taboo Science is not for you.

But if enjoy a beaker full of fun with your science lesson, and don't mind your poop being referred to you as "butt nuggets," then Taboo Science is for you.
