How to Use the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens For Video
The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens ("Nifty 50") is a very compact and affordable lens for anyone who wants to get started with DSLR camera work. It has a relatively shallow depth of field, which is great for those who want to create professional-looking "bokeh" in their vlogs and high-detail close-up interview shots . Since the lens has such a wide aperture, you will also be able to shoot at relatively high-ISO in low light.
The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens is a great lens to have in your bag. For $125, you're getting a very sharp but quite inexpensive lens that will help your footage look more cinematic and professional. It's compact and lightweight, so you can take the Nifty 50 with you almost everywhere you go..
It has a maximum aperture of f/1.8, which will allow you to make videos that are sharp and in focus throughout the entire frame. Just like any other lens with auto-focus capabilities, the dof (depth of field) may not be that shallow with the 50mm STM. This is simply because automatic focus can have some inconsistencies; although it is usually good enough for online video purposes.
YouTube
If you're looking to get started with video production on YouTube, the Nifty 50 is a great lens to have in your arsenal, especially when making high-quality tutorial videos, for example, how to do basic yoga techniques . Tutorials are an awesome way for online video producers to make money and gain subscribers on YouTube. The Nifty 50 will provide you with a shallow depth of field, allowing you to shoot very close to your subject without being too obvious. Not to mention that at f/1.8, it has a wide aperture that will allow you to shoot at a lower ISO while still getting great footage.
Another popular video category on YouTube is reviews, for example reviews for yoga mats. The Nifty 50 is the perfect lens to use when shooting reviews because of its wide aperture, which will give you a shallower depth of field, which will make your video look more professional and seamless. The shallow depth of field also helps make objects crisper in focus, such as close ups of sports equipment when showing how they work in action.
Vlogs
Vlogging has become one of the best ways to take viewers along your adventures or even just your daily activities. The Nifty 50 is a great lens if you are just starting out with vlogging because it's lightweight and you can carry it around everywhere. Not to mention that wide aperture will make your videos look very cinematic and help them stand out from the crowd.
The Nifty 50 is very useful for travel vlogging. If you're on the go and want to keep your camera close by instead of lugging a large bag, you can slip your Canon in your pocket or purse. With its small size and lightweight construction, this lens could be the perfect thing to have in case you need to shoot some impromptu footage while traveling.
The Nifty 50 provides a great depth-of-field making you and your subjects pop into focus, while the rest of the image goes out of focus. This is great for vlogging because you can make sure you are always in focus and your surroundings will be out of focus. This gives your video a more professional look that viewers will appreciate.
When shooting vlog content, you want to make sure you travel with a tripod or stabilizer. If you use a tripod, make sure to extend the legs all the way and place it on a steady surface like grass or dirt for the best results. If you are using a stabilizer, make sure that it is high quality and can support the weight of your camera because if its flimsy, you'll most likely get shaky footage. Having this equipment on hand will make action footage very smooth and seamless so your viewers can easily follow along with you and so that they aren't able to spot the camera.
Interview Shooting
When you are shooting interviews, you probably want to get in closer and use the depth of field available. By using a wide-aperture lens, you will have better control over your depth of field. If your lens is not set at f/11 or lower, the quality of your interview footage could suffer because there is a lot more light entering your lens and causing additional vignetting.
Although an interview can be conducted from any distance, having a wide-angle lens usually allows for the most natural camera framing. This is because, with such lenses, you are able to capture more of the subject's body language and desired emotions in the facial region. The Nifty 50 is a great lens to have here because it has a wide aperture, allowing you to shoot at a high ISO and still get great shots in low light.
Interviews are best shot on a DSLR camera because you will have autofocus and autoexposure that helps eliminate shaky images, making them appear more professional.
