Chapter 11 - The Duel

Summary : A space adventure where we follow Bucky Barnes around the universe as he struggles to reclaim the love of his life amidst the backdrop of war between humans and the Kree race.

Shocked to learn that Adriana was married to Yon-Rogg, Bucky was forced to fight for her and his own life while they were being hunted down by Supreme Intelligence's minions. Who will finally win in the battle for Adriana's love? And will they be able to avoid being captured by Supreme Intelligence?

Border of Lyra, Lyra, Torfa - May 2025

"Una! Una! I'm home!" Adriana froze as she heard Yon-Rogg's voice coming from the front door.

She turned to look at Yon-Rogg, her heart beating fast in her chest. She dreaded on what was going to happen next. Yon-Rogg's jaw was dropped and his eyes widened as he looked at the scene in front of him.

"You! Get away from her!" Yon-Rogg shouted as he pulled his sword out from the sheath on his waist and gave Bucky a killer stare.

"You stole her from me." Bucky said, his jaw clenched as he turned towards Yon-Rogg, his hands balled into fists.

Yon-Rogg approached them slowly while still raising his sword up.

"I saved her from you."

"Liar!" Bucky shouted.

"You took her from her home and kept her hostage!"

"I saved her from your conniving ways! I brought sense back into her! I saved her life!" Yon-Rogg shouted as he lifted his sword up and started to strike Bucky with it.

Bucky lifted a chair and blocked Yon-Rogg's sword and soon they started to fight.

"Stop! Stop it!" Adriana yelled but it was no use. Yon-Rogg kept on attacking Bucky with his sword while Bucky tried to block them using whatever item was near him. At one point he successfully held Yon-Rogg's hand, made him drop his sword and punched him in the face, startling Yon-Rogg. He quickly recovered and used the anti gravity device on his wrist and pointed it at Bucky. The device shot out a blue beam and engulfed Bucky's body completely. Yon-Rogg then moved his hand and threw Bucky across the room and sent Bucky flying towards the front door. The front door crashed open and Bucky fell back towards the street. Yon-Rogg ran towards him as Bucky stood up and soon their fight escalated on the street.

They continued throwing punches and kicks at one another. Being a super soldier Bucky seemingly had the upper hand. But Yon-Rogg was strong, he managed to block Bucky's attacks on him and threw back powerful punches and kicks at Bucky.

Seeing the scene in front of her, Adriana quickly picked up her spear and attacked both Yon-Rogg and Bucky, hitting them on multiple spots on their bodies, making them both fell kneeling on the ground. She stood between them, pointing the edges of her spear on their faces.

"Stop it! Right now!" She yelled.

For a moment both of them seemed to heed her request. Their hands hung limp by their sides as they stared at each other with anger in their eyes. But suddenly Yon-Rogg used the anti gravity device on his wrist, pointed it at Bucky and sent him flying across the street until he hit a door of one of the houses.

"Bucky!" Adriana screamed and dropped her spear. She started to run towards him but Yon-Rogg held her back.

"He's a killer, Una! Stay back! Stay back!" Yon-Rogg shouted as he held her shoulder tight.

All the commotion attracted the residents around them. Soon, they were surrounded by Sentimaults and Nowlanians who were curious on what was happening.

Bucky had hit the door hard and fell down to the ground. He grunted and started to stand up slowly.

"Adriana.. get away from him!" He yelled as he finally stood up and slowly walked towards Yon-Rogg and Adriana.

"Get away from him!" Bucky yelled as he started to run towards them.

Yon-Rogg pushed Adriana to the side just as Bucky jumped up high and landed, hitting his vibranium arm to the ground. The vibranium arm glowed blue as it absorbed the kinetic energy upon impact. He then stood up quickly and opened his palm, directing it towards Yon-Rogg, sending amplified kinetic energy towards him. Yon-Rogg flew back and hit the wall of a house. He fell down to the ground, seemingly unconscious.

"Yon-Rogg!" Adriana shouted and ran towards him.

She knelt down and patted Yon-Rogg's cheek gently until Yon-Rogg's eyes opened slowly.

"Una.. he's a killer, Una." He said as he looked up at her and winced a little.

"No, he's not! He can't be!" Adriana started to cry as all the shock and confusion flooded in her.

"Trust me, Una. He killed your father." Yon-Rogg said, looking at her with his eyebrows furrowed in concern.

Adriana felt like her heart just stopped. "What?!"

She looked up back towards Bucky who was being apprehended by the Lyra security team. His hands were put behind his back, a handcuff had been put on them.

Bucky looked back towards Adriana with great sadness in his eyes. Moments later the security team and Bucky walked past them and their eyes met for an instant. She could see anguish in his eyes as they passed, crushing her heart as she saw them. Then he looked away as he was brought away from them.

"Una.." Yon-Rogg called out to her gently and touched her chin, turning her face to look at him.

"I found his ship earlier today. I used it to connect to earth's database. I wanted to know if he was still alive or not. I didn't know it was his ship. I managed to find information that he killed your father. You can ask him yourself if you don't believe me. But there's something more important. While on his ship I heard his friends contacting him saying there was a Kree ship nearby. General Zogg-Larn is here, Una. He's hunting him and us. We have to go now." Yon-Rogg said, an urgency in his voice.

"What?!" Her eyes widened as she digested the information.

"The beacon on my ship is somehow still on. They managed to track it and they're now looking for us. We have to go." Yon-Rogg said as he slowly got up.

Adriana stood up as well, wiping the tears from her eyes, her mind still reeling from the information Yon-Rogg just gave her. On the one hand she didn't want to believe that Bucky would have the heart to kill her father, her father of all people! But on the other hand, Yon-Rogg seemed so sure of himself. It didn't seem like he was lying.

"Alright, but I need to see Bucky before we go." Adriana finally said. She needed to know if Yon-Rogg was telling the truth. It sounded impossible that Bucky would kill her father. Just impossible! She needed to hear it from Bucky himself.

Yon-Rogg sighed and held both her arms tight then looked down at her intently. "Trust me, Una. He's an assassin. Killing is what he does. I don't want you to see him again. He's too dangerous. But, I know it's important for you. So, I'll accompany you to talk to him. And then we have to go."

Adriana nodded in agreement. Just then Halvos came and stood next to them.

"Yon-Rogg, three Kree ships have been detected in our skies. We suspect they're looking for you, and the human." Halvos said, referring to Bucky.

"Yes, I know Halvos. We're going to leave as soon as possible so they won't harm the people of Lyra. Now, where did you bring the human?" Yon-Rogg asked.

"We brought him to the underground jail." Halvos said.

"Could you take us to him? We have some unfinished business with him. " Yon-Rogg said.

"Of course. Follow me." Halvos replied and he beckoned for them to follow him.

Lyra's Underground Jail, Lyra, Torfa - May 2025

Adriana shivered as they walked down along the stone staircase. Bucky had been put in the furthest cell, deep underground, behind multiple gates and many guards. After passing the fourth gate, they finally arrived in front of his cell.

It was so dark and cold, the air was musty and suffocating. The only light came from a lamp on top of the cell's door. She squinted her eyes, trying to see into the cell. After a while she could make Bucky out. Her heart broke as she saw Bucky in the cell. He was sitting down on the ground, leaning back on the wall. His face looked blank, cold and emotionless.

"Bucky.." she approached the door of the cell slowly.

Bucky's head snapped up and she could see his face brightened immediately.

"Adriana.." he said as he stood up and walked closer towards the door.

"Don't be too happy yet. She just wants to ask you a question." Yon-Rogg said, standing behind Adriana.

"What question?" He asked coldly as he stopped right behind the door. His eyes flickered from Yon-Rogg, showing distaste then flickered back to Adriana, his eyebrows raised.

"I.. did you kill my father?" Adriana asked, her voice trembled.

Adriana's heart broke as she heard his answer. Her chest tightened and tears started to fall from her eyes.

Bucky's eyes widened and soon turned into defeat.

"I did.. I'm sorry.. Adriana."

"Why?" She asked, her voice shook.

"He was my mission back in the day. I.. I was an assassin, Adriana." He answered, his head hung.

Her heart felt like it broke into a million pieces as the information plagued her heart. How could he? How could he kill her father? Yon-Rogg was right. She was sure now that Bucky only used her all this time. What kind of man would kill her father and then managed to seduce her if he wasn't some kind of psycopath that had his own agenda? She concluded.

Tears fell even harder from her eyes as she turned around and ran. She needed to get away from Bucky. She couldn't handle seeing him now. So she ran, out of the dark and suffocating jail and back to her home.

Bucky could only look helplessly towards Adriana's running form. His heart felt constricted in his chest. He didn't think he could hurt her with the damning information again, yet he just did. He wished the earth would just open up wide and swallow him, saving him from all this pain.

"Bucky. I have a proposition for you." Yon-Rogg said, standing in front of the door of the cell, looking at him with triumph in his eyes.

"Don't call me that." Bucky protested.

"James.." Yon-Rogg said.

"It's Barnes to you." Bucky said coldly.

"Fine, Barnes.." Yon-Rogg drawled. "I have a proposition for you."

"What kind of proposition?" Bucky asked, his eyes looked up at Yon-Rogg coldly.

"I have your ship. I'll release you so you can go back to your friends then go back to earth. But you must promise me to leave us alone. Don't go looking for her again. She's my wife now. She doesn't belong to you anymore." Yon-Rogg said.

"Behavior like this won't help you. I only offer this to you once. I can just leave you here to rot, or to be found by Zogg-Larn. Either way, you lose. My offer is the only good option you have." Yon-Rogg said with no emotion in his voice.

Bucky chuckled mirthlessly.

"What will happen once she regains her memory back? She'll dump you and come looking for me. That's what's gonna happen. So don't be too happy now, you creepy yellow eyed bastard!" Bucky yelled as he held on to the railing on the door and rattled it.

Bucky looked back at Yon-Rogg with anger in his eyes, but his mind contemplated his offer. It really was the only good option he had. The most important thing was that he needed to get out. He would think of other ways to get Adriana back.

"Fine. Release me." Bucky finally said.

"Promise me to never look for her again." Yon-Rogg said.

"I promise." Bucky said with a sneer.

Yon-Rogg nodded and beckoned for one of the guards to open the cell door. As soon as Bucky stepped out of the cell, Yon-Rogg pulled both his hands to his back and directed his anti-gravity device to Bucky's hands and held them together, turning it into a powerful handcuff so that Bucky couldn't move his hands. Bucky sighed as he felt the device's power around his hands. He tried moving his hands but they wouldn't budge.

"Come on, move." Yon-Rogg ordered as he pushed Bucky's shoulder.

Bucky slowly walked up along the stone staircase with Yon-Rogg close on his heels. His legs felt heavy, his hands felt heavy but his heart felt even heavier. He couldn't get rid of the image of Adriana in his mind, crying as he told her that he had killed her father. He never thought he could feel the same pain again. The pain of telling her the truth and see her crumble before his eyes. Maybe.. maybe they just weren't meant to be. He thought as despair started to eat him up inside. Maybe it really was best if he left. His friends needed him anyway, and they still needed to find Kang. Yes, he decided that for now the best thing to do was to reunite with his friends. He would then discuss with them on what to do about Adriana.

Adriana & Yon-Rogg's House, Border of Lyra, Torfa - May 2025

As soon as Adriana arrived at her house she went into the bedroom. She took out a duffel bag and started putting some of her clothes and Yon-Rogg's clothes in it. Tears fell down from her eyes as flashes of Bucky admitting his unbelievable crime to her appeared in her mind.

She remembered what Bucky told her earlier, how she should listen to her heart instead of her mind to find out the truth. Well, she searched her heart and as much as she didn't want to believe it, her heart told her that Bucky and Yon-Rogg weren't lying about Bucky having killed her father. She could see it in both their eyes. She could see the guilt and anguish deep in Bucky's eyes. How could he?

Her hands started to shake and her whole body followed as the grief washed over here. She put down the clothes and the bag on the bed and slid down on the floor. She put her head on the bed, her face buried in one of her clothes as all the emotions finally engulfed her and she sobbed hard. She cried over her father, someone who she knew now was already gone, in the hands of someone she loved no less. She cried over her mother who she didn't even know still lived or not. She cried over her siblings who she might have, who she hadn't gotten the chance to know yet. She cried over her own life, her blank past, the life she wished she could remember more often than she could count.

Bucky's appearance had brought back hope in her heart that she would remember her past again. All that he had told her earlier in the kitchen seemed to be true, she could feel it. But then the fact that he had killed her father had ruined it all. She was back to square one. Not knowing whether to trust him or not. Not knowing whether she could trust Yon-Rogg either.

Her mind wandered back to the very first memory she had of her past. She remembered opening her eyes and seeing the missile heading straight at her. She remembered Yon-Rogg's warm body hugging her tight as he shielded her from the incoming missile. She remembered Yon-Rogg's face as he told her that he couldn't kill her because he had feelings for her. She remembered his bright face as they stood facing each other during their wedding, exchanging their vows and promising to protect each other.

With her past a blank page in her head, she could only draw one conclusion. Yon-Rogg was the one who saved her and loved her. He had sacrificed everything for her. Bucky on the other hand, came out of nowhere bringing her sadness and confusion. Even though her heart told her that Bucky loved her very much and she loved him too, but it was all in the past. And she wasn't even sure whether he was genuine about it or whether he was just using her, like Yon-Rogg had said.

Between the two of them she could feel that she loved Bucky more. He felt so familiar to her. But after knowing the horrible fact, she wasn't sure she could love him again. How could she after what he had done?

She took a deep breath and finally made the decision. She should stick by Yon-Rogg and be a good wife to him. She promised to do that during their wedding. She should try to forget Bucky. There was no use in trying to remember her past with him and remembering the love she felt for him again. Besides, she and Yon-Rogg were being hunted, she should put her priorities straight and focus on getting away from Lyra as soon as possible.

She lifted her head and wiped the tears from her eyes. She then continued to pack and tried hard to forget her emotions.

Once she was done packing her clothes, she then went to the kitchen and packed some food and drinks into the bag. She picked up Yon-Rogg's sword too which was lying on the living room floor and quickly went out of the house. She wondered where Yon-Rogg was but she suspected he must be at his cave, preparing his ship, so she went there.

On the way to the cave she came across her spear, which was thankfully still lying down on the street in front of her house. Everyone knew it was hers so no one took it. She slung the duffel bag around her shoulder, picked the spear up with one hand and held Yon-Rogg's sword in her other hand then continued to go to Yon-Rogg's cave.

She arrived at the cave several minutes later, just in time to see a small ship flew out from the cave. She wondered who it was. Yon-Rogg couldn't have left her, she thought in confusion. Sure enough, when she entered the cave she found Yon-Rogg, doing some checks on his ship.

"Yon-Rogg, what's going on?" She asked as she arrived next to him.

"Oh, Una, you're here." Yon-Rogg said, smiling at her.

"Yes, I've packed some clothes and food for us. I also brought you your sword." She said, giving Yon-Rogg his sword.

"Alright, that's good. Thank you, my love." He smiled as he accepted the sword and put it in the sheath on his waist.

"Wait, Una, have you been crying?" Yon-Rogg asked, looking at her in concern and putting his palm on her cheek gently.

Adriana's bottom lip quivered as she remembered the emotions she had tried to repress in her. Tears started to fall from her eyes and she cried again. Yon-Rogg reached out and engulfed her in his warm embrace, rubbing his hand behind her back, trying to soothe her.

For a moment they just stood there as she poured out all the emotions in her heart. After some time, she gradually stopped crying and released herself from Yon-Rogg's embrace. She wiped the tears from her eyes and looked up at Yon-Rogg who was looking down at her with equal sadness in his eyes.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Yon-Rogg asked gently as he cupped her face between his hands and wiped a falling tear from her cheek with his thumb.

"No, it's okay. I.. I've thought things over and I.. I believe you Yon-Rogg. So I decided to forget Bucky and come with you. You love me so much and I love you too. So.." she sniffled as she explained herself.

Yon-Rogg's face immediately brightened as he heard her explanation.

"Oh, Una my love. You have no idea how much that means to me. I love you." He said, smiling down at her with love and adoration in his eyes.

"I love you too." She smiled and he leaned close to her and kissed her lips gently. For a moment Adriana felt at peace. Everything felt like they were going to be alright and for once she felt like the sun had peeked from behind the clouds in her heart.

"So, shall we go now?" She asked after a while, breaking their kiss.

"I just need to check some things then we can go." Yon-Rogg said, releasing her face from his hands.

"Okay. By the way, who was it that just flew out of here?" She asked curiously.

"Oh, that was Barnes." Yon-Rogg replied.

"Bucky?" Her eyes widened in surprise.

"Yes. I decided to release him so he can find his friends and go back to earth." He responded.

"Oh.. okay.. That's very kind of you Yon-Rogg." Adriana nodded. She felt strangely sad as she heard the information. If Bucky left, that meant she would never see him again. Well, she was leaving herself, but the fact that she wouldn't see him again just dawned in her. There was still so much she wanted to ask him and she felt a sting in her heart, like her heart was grieving.

Stop it! She scolded herself. He was a killer who killed her own father. He was a dangerous man. She should stop feeling like this about him. She was married to Yon-Rogg now, someone who loved her dearly and would sacrifice everything to protect her. She should focus on him now. He deserved it anyway.

"Well, I asked him not to bother us again as a condition of his release." Yon-Rogg said, looking down at Adriana intently.

"I don't want him to come looking for you again, Una. He's dangerous. It's best that you never see him again." Yon-Rogg continued, putting his palm on the sides of her cheek.

"Yes. I guess you're right. Thank you for releasing him though. I thought you would've let him stay in jail." She said, looking up at him with admiration in her eyes.

"Well, I just think it's best he stays as far away from here as possible. I don't want him to endanger the people of Lyra. Zogg-Larn is looking for him. If Zogg-Larn finds out that he had left, he wouldn't bother the people of Lyra." Yon-Rogg said.

"Yes, you're right." She said and she went on tiptoe and kissed his lips gently, surprising him.

"What was that for?" Yon-Rogg asked, smiling wide at her as he broke the kiss.

"Oh, just for being a kind hearted and generous soul. I mean.. I thought you would've killed him, you know." She chuckled.

"I would have.. but I'm not a cold hearted killer like he is. If there are other ways, then I prefer not to kill him. Even though, my first instinct when I saw you with him was of course to kill him.. but in the end I just wanted to protect you." He said.

"I know, Yon-Rogg. And I'm really thankful for that." She smiled and kissed him again gently.

"Alright, you need to stop kissing me because we need to go." He chuckled, breaking their kiss.

"Okay, I'm sorry." She smiled. "Where are we going Yon-Rogg?"

"I was thinking we can go to Yahiri. It's quite remote but beautiful and it has plenty of fish and sea animals for us to consume. And I heard the sunsets are beautiful there." He said, smiling warmly at her.

"Okay. Let's go there, then." She nodded.

Soon they were strapped in their seats and ready to go. Yon-Rogg took the pilot's seat while Adriana sat beside him on the co-pilot's seat. After pushing some buttons, Yon-Rogg pulled a lever next to his right hand slowly and the ship hovered then moved out of the cave slowly. He then pulled the lever fully and the ship took off to the sky.

Yon-Rogg was just finished putting the coordinates to Yahiri when the ship's radar detected another ship following them.

"Yon-Rogg, there's a ship behind us. Could it be Zogg-Larn?" Adriana asked as she studied the radar monitor who was showing the unmistakable sign that a ship was following them.

"Yes, it's a Kree ship. It must be him." Yon-Rogg responded as he studied the radar monitor and saw the unique Kree military code flashing on the monitor.

A yellow light suddenly flashed on the monitor, the Kree ship was trying to communicate with them. Yon-Rogg pushed a button near him and soon a voice could be heard.

"Attention Torfan, we are from the Kree Empire. We are looking for one of our people. Respond to us and we will not shoot. Ignore us then we will shoot." The voice said.

"Yon-Rogg, what are we going to do?" Adriana asked, panic filled her voice.

Yon-Rogg didn't answer right away but there's a slight relief in his eyes.

"I have to answer him." Yon-Rogg finally said and he pushed a button near him.

"Ka-Loss, my friend, I haven't heard from you in a while. How are you?" Yon-Rogg said, making Adriana's eyebrows raised in confusion.

"Yon-Rogg! So you're still alive. We thought you were dead. We found the remains of your ship." Ka-Loss responded.

"No, no, you know I'm tougher than that." Yon-Rogg chuckled.

"Well, it's good to hear from you again. Why haven't you come back to Hala?" Ka-Loss asked.

"I failed a mission Supreme Intelligence gave me, Ka-Loss. I'm much too ashamed to go back. So, I decided to stay here and live the rest of my life as a lowly peasant." Yon-Rogg responded.

"Hmm.. I see. Well I'm really sorry, Yon-Rogg but we have orders from Zogg-Larn to find you. So if you could just follow us, that would be great." Ka-Loss said as his ship suddenly appeared on the left next to them.

Yon-Rogg turned his head to the left. Adriana turned her head too and she could see someone from inside the ship giving them a salute. Yon-Rogg returned the salute then sighed.

"Ka-Loss, I'm afraid I can't do that. I have my own life here. I have a wife now. I'm starting a family, would you believe it? After all these years, I'm finally settling down. I just don't think Kree military life is for me anymore." He sighed.

Ka-Loss didn't answer right away. His ship continued to fly next to them as they flew passing the beach, the forest then headed towards the mountain.

"Yon-Rogg, you know I can't just release you. You know how everything is in our military. So, I'm sorry my friend, if you don't want to come with me willingly, I'm going to have to make you." Ka-Loss said. The yellow light then turned off, signifying that Ka-Loss had shut off the communication.

Adriana turned to see Ka-Loss' ship but it had slowed down and took a position behind them again. Then it started to shoot at them, raining them with laser beams.

"Oh, I really hoped he was going to leave us alone." Yon-Rogg grumbled.

"Hang on tight Una!" He shouted as he maneuvered the ship to avoid the shots coming fast at them.

Adriana gripped the edges of her seat tight as Yon-Rogg continued to steer the ship left and right trying to avoid being hit by the laser beams as they flew past the mountains and headed towards canyons. Yon-Rogg took the ship down and flew it in one of the canyons as he tried to lose Ka-Loss behind them, veering left and right in the narrow canyon, but Ka-Loss was as skillful as he was and it was hard to lose him. Soon the canyon gave way to another forest, one they never ventured into, when Ka-Loss sent a missile their way.

"Yon-Rogg! Look out!" Adriana shouted.

The missile was headed straight towards their tail but suddenly a small ship appeared between them and the missile and the missile hit it instead. Adriana looked back and realized it was Bucky's ship that had taken a hit. She saw the small ship falling down to the ground but saw something came out of it moments before the ship hit the ground. It seemed Bucky had come out of the ship in time.

"Yon-Rogg! Bucky's ship took the hit!" she exclaimed out loud.

"I know!" Yon-Rogg shouted back, shaking his head.

"We should go back and help him!" Adriana pleaded.

"We should lose Ka-Loss first, Una!" Yon-Rogg yelled, exasperated as he took the ship to fly along another canyon.

"Hold on tight!" He yelled as he took the ship to fly vertically all of a sudden as they almost hit the walls of the canyon.

Ka-Loss proved to be quite skillful. He steered his ship vertically as well and flew it really close to their tail.

"I thought that would work." Yon-Rogg grumbled when he realized Ka-Loss was still on their tail. He turned the ship around, back towards where Bucky's ship had fallen down.

Ka-Loss continued to follow and shoot at them. Suddenly a loud booming sound could be heard and the ship rattled as the left wing of the ship got hit.

"Yon-Rogg!" Adriana shouted in panic as she looked at the smoke coming out of the left wing of the ship.

"Hold on, Una!" Yon-Rogg shouted as they flew very near to a narrow canyon. Yon-Rogg managed to turn the ship sideways and they flew in the narrow canyon. Ka-Loss was too late to react however. His ship hit the narrow canyon and exploded, leaving smoke and debris to fall down into the abyss down below.

Soon their ship flew past the narrow canyon. Yon-Rogg turned the ship horizontally again but because the left wing had been hit, it didn't turn as smoothly.

"Hang on, Una!" Yon-Rogg shouted as he took the ship lower and lower to the ground, trying to land it before it could crash to the ground.

After safely passing the canyon, the ship flew down over the unknown forest, crashing through trees and finally skidded on the ground and stopped after hitting a tree and jolting both of them in their seats.

"Una.. are you alright?" Yon-Rogg asked, turning to look at her.

"I'm fine, Yon-Rogg." Adriana answered. Her heart beat wildly in her chest and she was still shocked but otherwise she felt fine.

"How about you?" She asked as she studied his face.

"I'm fine, Una. Let's get out of here." He responded.

They unbuckled their seat belts and stood up. Before getting out of the ship they took their respective weapons and the duffel bag filled with their clothes and food then they slowly got out of the ship.

Adriana looked around as soon as they got off the ship. They had crash landed in the middle of the forest. The forest was quiet, not a sound could be heard. All the animals and birds must have been frightened by them, she thought. She looked back at the ship and saw the damage on the left wing and the front which had hit a tree. She wondered if they could be fixed so they could still use it to go or if they were forced to go on foot.

"Oh, great. This is going to be hard to fix." Yon-Rogg complained, answering her thought as he looked around the ship and inspected the damage.

"Maybe you can try contacting Halvos and get his help?" Adriana suggested.

"Oh yes, brilliant idea, Una. I'll try that." He said then he activated his communicator, which was in the form of a small pin on his right chest. Unfortunately they seemed to be really far away from Lyra so the device couldn't connect at all.

"I can't contact him. It won't connect." Yon-Rogg said, tapping the communicator impatiently.

"Well, I guess we should just go on foot, back to Lyra?" Adriana asked, looking towards Lyra which was miles away from where they were, separated by canyons, mountains, and a forest. Dread filled her heart as the realization dawned in her that they might get killed along the way. Aside from the distance and heavy terrain between them and Lyra, there was also the unknown threat from wild beasts and creatures as well as Zogg-Larn and his men whom she was sure were still around, looking for them.

"I guess that's the only.. " Yon-Rogg said but he didn't finish what he was going to say. He raised his hand and pointed the anti-gravity device on his wrist to someone who just came out from behind trees in front of them.

Adriana turned to look at where Yon-Rogg was looking at and her heart seemed to stop in her chest. Bucky was standing there, his face looked dirty and he looked exhausted but the thing that pained her the most was the way he looked at her. He was looking at her with so much sadness in his eyes that she could feel the sting in her heart which threatened to paralyze her. How could she still have so much love for this man? The man who killed her father? It didn't make any sense to her. She should have hated him but when she searched her heart all she could feel was love for him.

She shook her head and blinked, trying to put some sense back in her head. She was glad Bucky was still alive. But now, she needed to keep her distance from him.

"Adriana.. I'm so glad you're okay." Bucky said, smiling at her.

"I'm.. I'm glad you're okay too." She responded.

Bucky started to walk closer to them but a blue beam suddenly surrounded his body, preventing him to move.

"Stay back, Barnes. I'm warning you. Don't come any closer." Yon-Rogg said as he walked past Adriana and positioned himself between her and Bucky.

"I'm not gonna hurt you, Yon-Rogg. I've got nothing." Bucky said as he tried to lift his hands but couldn't.

"Yon-Rogg, maybe you should let him go. He saved our life back there." Adriana said as she came closer to Yon-Rogg and touched his hand. Yon-Rogg sighed and lowered his hand down as the anti-gravity device was turned off.

"Fine." Yon-Rogg said dejectedly.

As soon as the blue beam was off, Bucky continued to walk towards them and stopped in front of Adriana.

"Thank you for saving our lives, Bucky." Adriana said, looking up at him.

"Oh, no problem. I saw your ship being chased by that other ship and decided to follow you. I mean, I couldn't just leave. Then when I saw it shot a missile at you, I just had to do something." Bucky shrugged.

"Well, thank you Bucky." Adriana smiled at him and Bucky's face immediately brightened.

"You're welcome, Adriana. I'm.. I'm sorry again about.. earlier." Bucky stammered. The fact of his horrible sin hung like a black cloud between them.

"I'm sorry too, Bucky. I can't pretend to understand why you did what you did. And I may never understand it, but let's just forget about it for now. We have a more pressing issue at hand." Adriana said as she mentally locked her emotions in a box, set it aside in the depths of her mind and threw away the key.

"Alright. Thank you." Bucky nodded, relief filled his eyes.

"So, my ship is destroyed. Your ship is damaged. We're basically stranded here. What should we do next?" Bucky asked, turning towards Yon-Rogg who was giving him a killer stare.

"We walk." Yon-Rogg said then he grabbed Adriana's hand and proceeded to walk with her towards where Lyra should be.

Bucky quickly followed them and walked right next to Adriana.

"Where are we going?" He asked.

"Back to Lyra, I guess. Right, Yon-Rogg?" She asked, turning to Yon-Rogg.

"Okay. That's a good idea. I also have tried contacting my friends, but couldn't. Maybe I can try again on that hill." Bucky nodded.

Yon-Rogg sighed then stopped.

"Yes, we have to try to go back to Lyra. But it's miles away. It will take days to get there. I want to go up to that hill over there and try to contact Halvos from there. Hopefully the signal will be strong there so I can contact him." Yon-Rogg said, pointing to a hill far in the distance.

Yon-Rogg nodded then he turned back and started to walk again, dragging Adriana with him.

They continued to walk in silence for several minutes, passing the quiet and eerie forest. Adriana had so much in her mind that she wanted to ask Bucky. But she didn't know if she could trust him. So she decided to stay quiet for now. Her heart couldn't betray her feelings though. Bucky's proximity to her made her nervous yet excited. Several times his right hand brushed hers as they walked and every time they did she felt butterflies flew in her stomach. She scolded herself every time it happened. She was walking with her husband too, who was holding her other hand tight and all she could think about was how another man grazed her hand and sent butterflies swarming in her stomach? She felt extremely guilty. So after a while she tried to walk a little further from Bucky.

After about an hour of walking in silence Adriana finally broke the silence. She was feeling tired, thirsty and hungry. The sky also slowly turned dark as the sun slowly started to set. The night was coming and she figured it was time for them to take a rest.

"Yon-Rogg, could we stop and rest? It's getting dark, maybe it's better if we stop somewhere and rest for tonight then continue our journey tomorrow." Adriana suggested as she stopped walking.

Yon-Rogg stopped, followed by Bucky. He then looked around and consulted his watch.

"Alright. We can try to find a shelter and stay there for tonight. We'll continue our journey to that hill in the morning." He nodded.

"Good. I'm so hungry and thirsty." Adriana complained.

"Yes, me too." Bucky chimed in.

Adriana looked at him and smiled making Bucky smiled back sheepishly.

"Come on, Una. Let's find a shelter. We can eat and drink there." Yon-Rogg said with a slight dislike on his face. He then pulled her hand and dragged her to walk again.

After several minutes they found a place fit enough for them to rest. There was a clearing in the forest surrounded by big, tall and lush trees. There were two fallen tree branches facing each other that they could use as benches and the forest floor was dry and filled with fallen leaves, making them perfect for sleeping.

"I think we can rest here." Yon-Rogg announced.

They stopped and sat on the tree benches. Yon-Rogg sat on one while Bucky sat on the other one. For a split second Adriana was confused on where to sit, but she finally took a seat next to Yon-Rogg, making him smile at her as she sat down. She looked across her to Bucky and saw his disappointed face. Seeing him made her feel a slight pang of sadness in her heart. Stop it! She scolded herself internally.

"Here you go, my love, your favourite drink." Yon-Rogg said, taking out a bottle of something light green from the duffel bag and gave it to Adriana. He had given her green tee mixed with milk, something she absolutely loved.

"Oh, thanks honey." Adriana accepted the bottle and smiled at Yon-Rogg. She glanced towards Bucky as she started to open the bottle and saw hurt in his eyes. She felt another pang in her heart as she saw his eyes, a pang of guilt. Stop it! You shouldn't feel this way towards him! She scolded herself.

"Barnes, I hope you're okay with some kaf." Yon-Rogg said, giving Bucky a bottle of light brown liquid which was filled with kaf mixed with some milk.

"Thanks Yon-Rogg." Bucky said, accepting the bottle from him.

"Kaf? Oh, is it like coffee?" he asked as he studied the bottle.

"Yes. It's exactly like coffee." Adriana commented as she sipped her green tee.

"You remember coffee?" Bucky asked, smiling at her as he opened his bottle of kaf.

"I.. umm... It's what you call kaf on earth, right?" Adriana asked.

"Yes, it is." Bucky nodded after he took a sip of the kaf.

"Well, I don't remember it but I read it in a book." Adriana explained.

"Oh, okay." Bucky nodded.

"Ever since Yon-Rogg told me I was half human I read everything there was to know about earth, including the food and drinks from earth." She smiled.

Bucky was drinking his kaf when he listened to her. He stopped drinking and looked at Yon-Rogg with a murderous glare, confusing Adriana.

"Bucky.. what is it?" She asked.

"Adriana, you're not half human. You're fully human with no Kree blood in you. Yon-Rogg is lying to you." He gritted his teeth and clenched his jaw.

"Barnes, I'm warning you. Don't say anything you might regret. Remember our deal. If you break it, I won't hesitate to kill you." Yon-Rogg said as he glared back at Bucky.

"Well, try me if you can!" Bucky shouted and stood up suddenly, his fists balled next to him. Yon-Rogg stood up too and turned the anti-gravity device on his wrist on. They stared at each other in daggers, each of them ready to kill the other.

"Bucky! Yon-Rogg! Please! Stop!" Adriana yelled and she stood up, putting herself between them and holding each of their chests with her hands, preventing them from attacking each other.

"I can't stay quiet when I know he's been telling you lies, Adriana!" Bucky protested.

"And what proof do you have that I've been lying, huh? What proof do you have that can show her that it's you she should trust instead of me? You, who have killed her father of all people!" Yon-Rogg challenged him.

Bucky didn't respond right away but just glared at Yon-Rogg.

"I don't have proof here, Adriana." Bucky said after a while. He looked down at her and his eyes turned soft upon looking at her. "But if we could get access to a communication device somewhere and can connect to earth's internet, I can show you photos of your parents, your brother, you when you were young. You had a whole life back on earth, Adriana. I can show it to you. You just have to trust me." Bucky pleaded and he reached out to touch her hand and squeezed it gently.

Adriana's eyes widened as she heard Bucky. Could he really show her about her past? She had been wondering about her family. She had asked Yon-Rogg if he had pictures of her family but Yon-Rogg didn't have them. Or at least, that's what he said.

"Don't listen to him, Una. He's just feeding you with sweet lies. Once you fall into his lies he would use you again. He doesn't love you. He's just using you." Yon-Rogg said as he turned the anti-gravity device on his wrist off then grabbed Adriana's hand from Bucky's and held it tight in his.

Adriana felt a headache coming on as she heard both Yon-Rogg and Bucky. Her mind tried to recall memories of her family but she could only feel pain in her head. She jerked her hand back from Yon-Rogg's, sat back down on the tree branch and rubbed her temple.

"Honey, are you alright?" Yon-Rogg asked, sitting down next to her and looking at her in concern.

"I'm just having a headache. You know I always feel pain whenever I try to remember my past." She replied.

"Well then you should stop, at least for now. We're here to rest. Not to pick a fight with each other." Yon-Rogg said, glaring at Bucky.

"I'm sorry, Adriana." Bucky said, sighing deeply as he sat back down.

"It's Una. My name is Una, Bucky. It's confusing me whenever you call me with that name. I.. I don't remember it. So please, just call me Una." Adriana said, opening her eyes and looking at Bucky intently.

Bucky's eyes widened as he heard her. There was great conflict and sadness in his eyes, but after a while his eyes cleared and he nodded.

"Alright, if that's what you want, Una." Bucky said slowly.

"It is what I want. Thank you." Adriana said, smiling at him. Bucky smiled back at her but his smile didn't reach his sad eyes, making her feel another pang in her heart. She sighed and decided to change the subject.

"Well, let's eat. I brought some bread, cookies, and cheese. As well as some dried meat." Adriana said as she picked up the duffel bag and pulled out some food.

After what happened between them she really hoped they would all survive the night. She knew both would love to kill the other, but that wouldn't help at all. She needed both of them to get along for now. As sick as it might be, she truly loved them both and would be devastated if either of them was hurt. And she really didn't know who to trust at that point. She needed them both to stay alive until she hopefully regains her memory back.

Bucky took a sip of water from a bottle and leaned back on a tree branch. They were just finished eating and they decided to take turns in sleeping and keeping watch. Bucky wasn't sleepy yet so he decided to take the first turn on keeping watch while Adriana and Yon-Rogg went to sleep.

The sky had turned dark and the forest was dark. The only light came from Torfa's moons, two of which were shining upon them fully that night while the other two were shaped like a crescent. They decided not to use any light or make a fire for fear that it would attract both, wild animals and Zogg-Larn and his men, in case they were out there looking for them. So they were forced to resort to the moons as natural light.

His eyes gazed at Adriana's and Yon-Rogg's lying form several feet away in front of him. The air had turned cold so Yon-Rogg had his arms around Adriana in an attempt to keep her warm. Bucky couldn't help but feel an immense jealousy in his heart as he looked at them. He could hear them talking and laughing as they tried to fall asleep. He couldn't make out what they were saying but he could hear her laughter. Yon-Rogg seemed to be telling her something funny and she was laughing out loud. Her laughter sounded like a beautiful bell in his ears. Oh how much he missed her laughter. Part of him was happy and glad to know she was still alive and was right in front of him. But another part was hurting so badly knowing she belonged to someone else, and that someone else was earth's enemy in the war!

He sighed as he tried to wrap the hurtful feeling in his heart and put it into a box, lock it and throw away the key. He didn't know if he could ever deal with that fact. So rather than wallowing himself in it he decided to lock it away and never open it again.

He decided to reposition himself so he wasn't sitting facing them directly. His mind wandered to Sam and the others. He hoped they were alright. When he got on the pod earlier that day he had tried to contact them but couldn't. They must be worried sick about him. He secretly hoped they would suddenly appear in the sky and rescued him. He missed them, especially Sam. Well, he was happy to be near Adriana, but she felt like a stranger to him. Especially after she requested to be called Una. He wondered if she would ever get her memory back. What if she wouldn't? Would he be able to accept that she forgot about him, herself and their relationship until they both die? His heart ached and his eyes started to prick as he contemplated that possibility.

He couldn't help but glanced back towards Adriana's and Yon-Rogg's lying form. They had stopped talking and seemed to have fallen asleep. He continued to gaze at them as he tried to make out her face in the darkness. Slowly it dawned in him that they were kissing. His heart dropped to his stomach and he felt sick as he realized it. He immediately stood up and turned away from them. He quickly walked far away from them as he tried not to cry.

Adriana opened her eyes and shivered. She turned to her left and found that Yon-Rogg had left her. She turned her head towards where she saw Bucky last but couldn't find him. She sat up all of a sudden, a great dread filled her heart.

Slowly she could hear the sound of what seemed to be a sword fight. The shrill clanging sound filled the quiet night air. Her heart dropped to her stomach as she realized that Yon-Rogg and Bucky must be fighting.

She stood up and ran towards the sound. Suddenly she found herself transported to the edge of a cliff. She saw Yon-Rogg and Bucky fighting near the edge of the cliff. Yon-Rogg used his sword while Bucky used her spear.

"Yon-Rogg! Bucky! Stop it!" She yelled as she ran closer to them, but she was too late! Bucky somehow successfully grabbed Yon-Rogg's sword. He then punctured Yon-Rogg's stomach with it. Yon-Rogg's eyes widened as the sword impaled him.

"Nooo! Yon-Rogg!" Adriana screamed out loud as Yon-Rogg moved backwards, closer to the edge of the cliff. Bucky pulled the sword from Yon-Rogg's stomach and kicked him. Yon-Rogg fell over the edge of the cliff, his eyes still widened and both his hands outstretched in front of him.

"Nooo!" Adriana screamed as Yon-Rogg disappeared from her sight, gone into the abyss below.

Suddenly she opened her eyes and found herself sitting on the forest floor. She looked around and realized she was dreaming. Yon-Rogg was sleeping soundly next to her. She sighed in relief then turned her attention towards Bucky, but she couldn't see him. It seemed he was not sitting where she last saw him. She looked around and couldn't find him. She wondered where he was.

"Una, darling. What's wrong?" Yon-Rogg asked with a hoarse voice. He had woken up apparently.

"Oh, I just had a bad dream Yon-Rogg." She said, turning to look at him.

"Oh, do you want to talk about it?" He asked, sitting up and looking at her in concern.

"No, no, I'd rather not." She said. She was sure that Yon-Rogg wasn't going to like finding out more about her dream.

"Alright. Come here, let me hug you and chase the bad dream away." He said as he opened his arms wide and hugged her tight.

Her tense body relaxed in his arms and she sighed deeply. The dream was probably just her subconscious telling her about her deepest fear. Bucky was an assassin. She was sure if he fought Yon-Rogg that he would be able to defeat Yon-Rogg easily and she was worried about it.

"Come on, let's go back to sleep." Yon-Rogg said, pulling her down gently back onto the forest floor.

"Bucky isn't here, Yon-Rogg." She said as she lied down and faced him.

"Well, good. He probably found his friends." Yon-Rogg shrugged.

"Maybe.." She trailed.

"Una, what is it?" He asked, sensing her anxiety.

"You're going to hate me for this, but, I'm worried about him." She said.

Yon-Rogg sighed as he stroked her check gently with his thumb.

"Una, he's a trained assassin. He can protect himself." He shrugged. "Now come on, let's go back to sleep."

"Oh okay. You're right. He can take care of himself." She sighed then snuggled closer to Yon-Rogg and closed her eyes.

Yon-Rogg caressed Adriana's arms and rubbed it gently as he tried to soothe her back to sleep. After a while he could feel her breath had evened out. He stopped caressing her and looked down at her. Her eyes were closed and she seemed to have fallen asleep.

Now that he was awake he couldn't go back to sleep. He decided to take the turn to keep watch and let Bucky sleep. He released Adriana from his hold gently and sat up. He looked around trying to gauge where Bucky might have gone to. He stood up, stretched a little, picked up his sword and put it on the sheath on his waist then started to walk towards where he saw Bucky last. Coincidentally the path he took was the path towards the hill. After about half an hour of walking he arrived at the hill. He kicked himself internally for not pushing on to walk towards the hill earlier. If he knew it wasn't that far away, he would've asked Adriana to continue walking towards it.

He looked up at the hill and decided to climb it. Rather than waiting until morning it was better to try it that night so in case it didn't work he could figure out another way to get them rescued in the morning. The hill was quite high and steep, it took him about fifteen minutes to reach the top. Once at the top he tapped his communicator and tried to contact Halvos. Thankfully it seemed to be working but Halvos wasn't answering. He decided to leave a message and told Halvos of their coordinate.

He was about to go back down the hill when he heard it. A peculiar sound like something hitting a tree could be heard repeatedly. He turned around and followed the sound. His eyes widened as he saw the scene in front of him. Bucky was punching and hitting a tree with his vibranium arm. It looked like he was training. Yon-Rogg studied his movements and concluded that Bucky was very well trained. He could easily kill him if he wanted to like he did to his friends. So it was really important that he continued to not provoke Bucky to attack him no matter how tempting it might be. He actually would love to just kill him outright. It would be easy to throw him over a cliff somewhere using his anti-gravity device. But he knew Adriana would be devastated if Bucky was killed. So despite the strong feeling to kill him, he held it in to respect Adriana and not hurt her feelings.

He decided to greet him and maybe talk him out of following them around. They were already on the hill anyway, maybe he could contact his friends and leave them. He couldn't wait to go with Adriana alone and feeling sure that she was fully his without Bucky constantly being a threat towards him.

He walked closer to Bucky and clapped his hands to get Bucky's attention. Sure enough Bucky stopped hitting the tree and turned to face him.

"Impressive, Barnes." Yon-Rogg said as he stopped clapping his hands and stood in front of Bucky.

"You're awake." Bucky said, panting slightly while looking at him suspiciously.

"Una had a nightmare and woke me up. I couldn't go back to sleep after that." He said.

"Well I wouldn't be surprised if she has a nightmare. She has to sleep next to you every night. That must give her nightmares." Bucky snickered.

"Don't tempt me, Barnes." Yon-Rogg said, giving him a warning look.

"Or what? You'd kill me? Do it if you can. I dare you!" Bucky said, his hands balled into fists and his vibranium arm glowed blue. All the kinetic energy his vibranium arm had gotten from hitting the tree were still stored inside his arm, ready to be let loose whenever he needed it.

"I'm not going to kill you. You obviously mean a lot to Una. I don't want to hurt her feelings by killing you. It's best if you could just leave us as planned. We are on top of a hill and I'm sure you can contact your friends from here." Yon-Rogg said, trying to keep his cool.

"I tried contacting them but they didn't respond. I was thinking of waiting until morning to try again." Bucky explained.

"Alright then." Yon-Rogg nodded and he started to turn around to leave.

"Yon-Rogg, let me ask you something. How do you think you can get away with this forever?" Bucky challenged him.

Yon-Rogg stopped in his tracks and turned to look at Bucky. Anger started to seep into his heart.

"I'm sure one day her memory will come back. And when that time comes, and she looks at you in confusion and remembers me instead. What will you do?" Bucky asked, teasing him.

"That.. will not.. happen.." Yon-Rogg said slowly, gritting his teeth.

He had avoided to think about that possibility. He preferred to think about all the positive things he had felt every time he was with her. But the fact that Bucky suddenly appeared in front of them and blatantly challenged to ruin his happiness with her made him forced to think about it.

"Oh it will, Yon-Rogg, I'm sure of it. She's a super soldier after all. Any injury she sustains will eventually get healed. The fact she even remembers my name proves that." Bucky said and walked closer to him with a glint in his eyes.

"Stop it, Barnes. I'm warning you." Yon-Rogg said, giving him a death stare.

"I can imagine it, Yon-Rogg. One day she wakes up next to you and stares at you with confusion. Slowly that confusion will turn into hatred. She will hate you for taking her away from me, from her home. She will hate you for lying to her all this time. She will hate you for giving her a false name and forcing her to love you." Bucky said with a sneer.

"I didn't force her to love me! She fell in love with me, Barnes! She genuinely loves me!" Yon-Rogg shouted as anger fully consumed him.

"I don't believe that. Even if she did fall in love with you for real, she would still hate you and then leave you after knowing the truth." Bucky said.

Yon-Rogg couldn't say anything. What Bucky said was true. There was no other option. He would have to get rid of him. There was no other way.

He turned the anti-gravity device on his wrist on and pointed it at Bucky. Bucky's eyes widened as blue beam surrounded him. Yon-Rogg moved his hand and threw Bucky across towards a tree. Bucky hit the tree and fell down on the ground. He turned his anti-gravity device off and pulled out the sword from its sheath on his waist. He then ran and started to charge at Bucky.

Bucky rolled over on the ground quickly as Yon-Rogg's sword struck the ground. He stood up quickly and opened his vibranium arm and sent kinetic energy towards Yon-Rogg. Yon-Rogg flew back and hit another tree across from Bucky, his sword fell down to the ground in a clatter. Bucky walked towards him and picked up his sword. He arrived in front of Yon-Rogg and pointed his sword at his neck. Yon-Rogg opened his eyes and for a second he thought he was done for. But then he realized he still had his anti-gravity device on his wrist. He turned it on and quickly pointed it at Bucky then sent him flying across from him and Bucky landed on his back several feet away from him.

Yon-Rogg grunted and stood up slowly. He looked across at Bucky's form on the ground. Bucky was starting to move so he had to move fast. He pointed his anti-gravity device to a tree near him and soon blue beam surrounded the tree. With as much force as he could he pulled the tree up from the ground using his hand and once the tree was pulled out fully from the ground he threw it across to Bucky, burying him underneath it.

Adriana opened her eyes in a start. She turned to her left and found that Yon-Rogg was gone. She started to have a bad feeling in her heart. So she quickly stood up and decided to look for him. She looked up and saw blue light on top of the hill. She suspected it must be Yon-Rogg and maybe Bucky too. So she picked up her spear and quickly ran towards it.

She arrived at the hill a little less than half an hour later and continued to see blue light coming from on top of the hill. So she climbed up as fast as she could. Her heart felt something awful was happening and she needed to get to the top as soon as possible.

Several minutes later she arrived on top of the hill and her jaw dropped as she looked at the scene in front of her. Bucky and Yon-Rogg were fighting each other. They punched and kicked each other with so much anger between them. Then Yon-Rogg used the anti-gravity device on his wrist to send tree branches and rocks at Bucky while Bucky covered himself with his vibranium arm. At times Bucky could catch the rock or branch that were thrown at him and he threw them back at Yon-Rogg, forcing Yon-Rogg to use his anti-gravity device to deflect them from his body.

They continued to fight as Adriana looked at them. Their fight brought them closer and closer to a cliff behind them. At one point Yon-Rogg picked up his sword from the ground and started to attack Bucky with it. Bucky dodged his attacks and protected himself using his vibranium arm. They continued their fight closer to the edge of the cliff. Yon-Rogg stood nearer to the edge of the cliff as he struck Bucky with his sword. But Bucky was fast, he caught Yon-Rogg's hand as it went down on him, twisted it and he grabbed the sword in his hand. Yon-Rogg winced as his wrist was being twisted. Bucky then punctured Yon-Rogg on his stomach with the sword, impaling him and made him stop in his tracks. He then pulled the sword off Yon-Rogg and stared at him with satisfaction in his eyes.

"Yon-Rogg! No!" Adriana shouted in anguish and she ran towards them just as Yon-Rogg's feet slipped and he fell down over the cliff.

"No! No!" Adriana shouted in agony as she stared at Yon-Rogg falling over the cliff and gone from her sight.

Captain Marvel: Part Eleven

Pairing: Carol Danvers x Female!Reader

Word Count: ~2.4k

Warnings: canon violence and angst

Author’s Note: For the sake of the rewrite, Howard and Maria Stark dies on December 16, 1997 instead of 1991. Tony is 23 when they die.

In the real world, Yon-Rogg and friends watch as both your and Carol's body glows with your powers. You and Caro are done being their slave, and you hate that it took you this long to finally realize it.

"They're trying to break out," Korath gasps.

The heat you're giving off is too hot for the machine to handle, so you're able to break free from it as easily as breathing. Carol is able to do the same but something is different about her. Her whole body is glowing with her powers since she freed herself from the device on her neck. She blasts all Kree members into the walls behind them. Her eyes, including the whites, shine the exact same color as her powers to prove to the Kree that she's done being their doormat.

There isn't a lot of time before they regain their energy, so you grab the Tesseract and flee from the room with Carol. In one of the hallways is Fury and Maria fighting a few other Kree members. Carol isn't playing around; she blasts all of the Kree members into the walls, knocking them out easily.

"You know you're glowing, right?" Fury observes.

"We'll explain later." You open the lunchbox and present it to Fury who just stares at it. "Take the Tesseract, leave the lunchbox."

"Me?"

"Yes."

"I'm not touching that thing!"

"Do you want me to get you an oven mitt?"

Suddenly, Goose lurches herself toward the box and giant tentacles emerge from the inside of her mouth. The tentacles pick up the Tesseract and Goose swallows it whole before returning back to a normal cat. Fury drops her in shock but you and Carol aren't fazed by this.

"I've seen worse."

You close the lunchbox to make it look like you still have it with you.

"Get the Skrulls in the QuadJet and go. Take the Flerken with you," Carol advises.

"What about you two?"

"We'll buy you some time." You follow your girlfriend down the hall and into the main room of the entire lab. It's filled with useless junk that Mar-Vell thought she'd need but is no longer of use to anyone. Carol jumps up to the railing above her and sits on the edge with a smile. "What are you doing?"

"Just waiting. They'll come to us."

You fly up to her and lean against the railing next to her.

"You know, if this thing goes south, and we can't save everyone, just know I tried."

"Don't say things like that."

"I couldn't save my planet. Markus might still be out there. Sooner or later, my past is going to catch up to me."

"We're going to make it out of here. All of us will."

The two doors on either side of the platform where you and Carol are and the door down below open, allowing for eight Kree members to walk inside with only two things on their minds: Kill you and Carol, and get the Tesseract.

"Hey, guys! Arm wrestle for the Tesseract?"

"I used to find you amusing. Let's put an end to this!" Yon-Rogg yells.

The Kree on either side of you advance quickly, but Carol punches the bottom of the platform with her powers, sending a wave of energy throughout the entire lab. Four Kree are incapacitated by the falling debris, Carol is unharmed when she jumps down, and you fly next to the busted platform to avoid the sharp metal below. You land on the untouched side of the platform and turn to Minn-Erva who aims her gun at you.

"This is a little long overdue."

Before she can pull the trigger, you shoot a fireball past her head and into the metal cable holding the platform up.

"You missed."

"Did I?"

Your fire burns right through the metal like paper and it snaps like a bone. The platform and Minn-Erva go crashing to the ground in a cloud of smoke while you're flying in the air so you don't get hurt. You land on the ground and look out for Minn-Erva through the smoke which she uses to her advantage. She jumps out at you and tackles you to the ground, but you're quicker than she thinks you are. You hit her in the stomach with a strong gust of wind, and she goes flying across the room and into the wall behind her. She doesn't have time to react before you're grabbing her throat and pulling her in closer to you.

"You really should have been nicer to me."

The hand that's around her throat goes up in flames, burning the hell out of her skin. She screams and tries to put the fire out but the damage has already been done. Her throat has a huge hole where your fire once was, and she slumps to the ground, dead. You turn to help Carol but she's holding her own pretty well. She is fighting Korath but dominating the hell out of him. He grabs the pinball machine to wack her with, but you send a wave of water into his body, causing him to fall off balance.

Yon-Rogg was pinned beneath the wreckage when Carol busted through the platform above, but he modified his suit to move things telepathically. He moves the debris out of the way and stares at you and Carol with fire in his eyes. He stretches his arm out to use that same technology on you and Carol, and you two float in the air along with some metal shards. With his technology, he slams the two of you to the wall and uses the metal to keep you pinned there.

However, Carol is not about to let him win this way. She conjures up a lot of power and blasts the metal away, and Yon-Rogg shields his eyes to avoid the sharp metal. During all of this, the handle of the lunchbox was cut off, and the base of it fell to the ground. The box unlocks, revealing that the Tesseract is no longer in there. Yon-Rogg looks at the box and the smile is lost from his face.

"Nice diversion," he chuckles.

"I could've sworn we put it in there, right, Y/N?"

"Yeah, I remember us placing the Tesseract inside the lunchbox... I think," you play along.

Yon-Rogg can see this isn't going to play out well for him if he stays here, so he quickly turns and runs away like the coward he is. You'd go after him but two more Kree show up to keep you and Carol occupied while Yon-Rogg goes after the Tesseract.

"It's about to get hot in here!"

The Kree grabs some metal shards to throw at you, but you heat your body up to two thousand eight hundred degrees, which is the melting point for carbon steel. Carol takes a few steps back to protect herself from the heat you're radiating, but it doing a good job at protecting you from the shards the Kree is throwing at you. It melts before it can reach your body, so they grab their guns to use on you instead.

"Duck!"

You duck without questioning, and Carol crosses her arms in front of her before pulling them apart, and her powers hit every Kree in the room. Some of them died from the impact when they hit the walls while the others are knocked unconscious.

"Come on!"

You two run through the lab in search Yon-Rogg who found the small fighter jet packed inside. One of his other members is out trying to take down the spaceship with every Skrull, Maria, Goose, and Fury in it. Yon-Rogg is about to help when Carol jumps on top of the fighter jet. She is about to punch the glass right open when Yon-Rogg enabled it to take off. Both he and Carol fall through the opening into space.

"Carol!" you yell.

You jump in the hole to go after them, and your space suit covers your body to protect yourself against the harsh environment of space. You can't use your powers in space since there is no oxygen for you to manipulate, but you were able to modify your spacesuit with thrusters so you can use it instead of free falling. Yon-Rogg tries desperately to get Carol off his jet and decides to use his suit's technology instead of potentially crashing.

He flings her off, and she free-falls into Earth's atmosphere. She can't fly, and it's your job to save her before she crashes. As soon as you enter the atmosphere, you used your aerokinesis to fly faster to her. For a split second, Carol turns into Bucky, and you're brought back to the night the love of your life died.

No, this isn't happening again. You're not going to let another person you love die when you can do something about it.

"I'm coming, Carol!" You reach your hand out to grab her but it seems like she is always a tad longer than an arm's reach away. She closes her eyes to accept her fate, and you scream out to her. "No! Fight Carol! Fly!"

She opens her eyes but they aren't her normal color. Along with the whites, her entire eyeball is bright orange like the rest of her body. Her powers cover every inch of her body, and she jerks to the right and flies upward to save herself. You stop flying downward and watch her soar through the air much like you do when you're excited.

"This is awesome!!!" she laughs.

Yon-Rogg turns his craft around and heads right where you and Carol are, and you two smirk at each other when the same thought comes into both of your heads. With every ounce of strength, you two have, you punch the nose of the craft, sending Yon-Rogg off course. He spirals downward to Earth and crashes into the side of the mountain. You're about to go after him when you hear a booming sound come from above.

Something or someone is trying to enter Earth's atmosphere using jump points near the planet. You want nothing more than to go after Yon-Rogg but you have to deal with this new threat before anything else can happen. Carol is about to go up there and confront them when you stop her.

"I can't use my powers up there because there is no oxygen. In order for me to fight this war with you, I need to turn into you. I'll gain your abilities. Do I have your permission?"

"Yes," she nods. Your body transforms into Carol's like it's second nature to you, and she watches with a weird expression on her face. "That is not something I'll get used to."

"Come on, we need to go," you say using her voice.

She shakes off the initial surprise and takes off with you toward the new threat. The threat decides to launch an attack on Earth and sends a deadly missile toward the planet, but you and Carol aren't about to let it hit Earth. She grabs the missile by the nose and tries as hard as she can to stop it, and you help her turn it so that instead of flying toward Earth, it flies right into the other missiles flying behind it. They create a light show in the sky for whoever might be watching down below.

There are three alien spacecrafts in a row so you take the one on the right and Carol takes the one on the left. Both of you fly right into the side of the ship and go all the way through, punching through every wall and obstacle that gets in your way. Both ships explode as soon as you come out the other end, and the two of you meet in the middle right in front of the last one standing.

Wait, you know this craft. You know exactly who this is. Ronan is standing in a big room with a clear view of you and Carol. He and another man are talking but his eyes never leave you two. You grab Carol's hand and transform back into yourself, making sure to engage your spacesuit. Carol is the only thing holding you up right now, but you need to make sure Ronan knows it's you.

He locks eyes with you. His eyes narrow in anger knowing you're the one who destroyed his ships.

"What do we do, sir?" Ronan's right-hand man asks.

"Return to the jump point. We'll be back for their weapon."

"The Tesseract?"

"The woman." Ronan's eyes flicker from Carol to you. "Did you find Markus?"

"Yes, sir."

"Tell him we found her."

"Yes, sir."

Ronan returns back to the jump point knowing he's no match for you and Carol at this time. With him out of the way, you can focus on Yon-Rogg. When you enter the atmosphere, you use your powers to fly down to the ground with Carol. Yon-Rogg gets out of his jet and walks closer to you two. He has his weapons ready but puts them away after five minutes of just staring.

"I'm so proud of you," he says to Carol. "You've come a long way since I found you that day by the lake. Can you keep your emotions in check long enough to take me on? Or will it get the better of you, as always? I always told you that you'll be ready the day you can knock me down as yourself. This is that moment. This is that moment, Vers! Turn off the light show and prove to me, you can beat me with--"

Carol is done with his shit and blasts him back into the mountain with her powers.

"Thank you for doing that," you laugh.

Yon-Rogg can barely speak from trying to catch his breath, and he looks up at you two when you approach him.

"I have nothing to prove to you," she says calmly.

"I'm so proud of you," you grin and Carol blushes at the compliment.

Carol reaches her hand out for Yon-Rogg to take but instead of helping him up, she drags him to the fighter jet he stole. She shoves him inside and manipulates the controls to head back to Hala.

"Destination: Hala," the computer chirps.

"I can't go back empty-handed," Yon-Rogg sighs.

"You won't be empty-handed. I'm sending you with a message. Tell the Supreme Intelligence that I'm coming to end it. The war, the lies, all of it."

"You can't do this."

"Watch us," you grin and close the hatch.

To give the jet enough juice to make it back to Hala, Carol shot the engine with her powers. The jet immediately takes off and heads into the atmosphere with the intention of returning back to Hala.

"We did it!" you laugh.

You pull her closer to you and kiss her with a smile on your face. This is a victory kiss because she is now free from whatever the Kree did to her for the past six years.

I write on Discord or through Tumblr messages. I write in third person, past tense and generally 2-4 paragraphs. I can't reply every day because I work full-time during the week. I try my hardest to get things out within 2-3 days. Random Captain Marvel Rant

Note this is a positive rant because I love her.

Women usually are only allowed to have positions of power if it's in the shadow of men. Esp in comics. It's even under the male counterparts title which is evocative of the mysonist tradition of women' taking their male partners name in marriage thus erasing an aspect of their identity. The very identity of women superheroes are these shadows of men... supergirl, batgirl, lady thor, she-hulk, Kate Bishop becomes Hawkeye. Captain Marvel falls under this in the comics but is her own person in the MCU and that is extremely powerful. More than that she is one of the most powerful characters in the MCU and didn't get her powers at all from a man, and further doesn't fall into the crazy overpowered woman trope like the literal image on tvtropes.org (Wanda which is a whole other sigh thing). It's important to see women can have power independent of men... esp when comic books have historically propagated this disgusting sexist trope. The Captain Marvel movie does this.

Further, Carol Danvers is told over and over that emotions get in the way; make her weak. This is something real women face every damn day and is hugely oppressive to them... esp in the workforce and in politics, which often bars them (and female voices) from legislation and policy making positions. Seeing Carol come to terms with her past and taking her power back from her literal oppressors and being her own emotional, human, independent, badass is very important for girls, women, (AND boys, men, and people in general) to see. Emotions are not a weakness.

I love that Carol doesn't fight Yon-Rogg. She doesn't have to. She's better than him. She doesn't have to prove herself, because he's a waste of her time. OH and unlike DC with Wonder Woman.... she isn't dating a dude either... YES women can exist without a love interest. F*cking this!

Lastly, Captain Marvel is a fun 90's buddy cop movie between Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson. A woman and a black man. Do you know how rare it is to have a movie with no white male leads? Like the only thing I can compare it to is Rush Hour. Like all these buddy cop movies are white guy with X type of partner - X being a black man, younger white guy, a dog, ect.
