That’s Enough
“Stop it,” Caretaker said once the sound of knuckles thudding mutely turned to squelching. Caretaker stared at Whumpee, the sweat flying from them as they continued to punch the punching bag. “Hey. Whumpee, that’s enough.”
Whumpee didn’t listen. They just kept jabbing in the one two movement they had been doing for the half hour. Caretaker let go of the bag but Whumpee moved with it.
“Hey! Whumpee,” Caretaker hissed, stepping in front of Whumpee, hands up palms facing Whumpee. “That’s enough, you’re hurting yourself.”
Whumpee didn’t listen. Instead, they started punching Caretaker’s hands. Caretaker snapped their hand closed but Whumpee retracted their arm swiftly to their chest to punch again, their eyes distant and hard.
“Whumpee! Whumpee,” Caretaker snapped as Whumpee’s fists started coming harder on Caretaker’s palms. Caretaker stepped forward into Whumpee’s punches and reached a hand up, locking it around Whumpee’s wrist. Whumpee yanked it back but Caretaker held firm.
Only then did Whumpee seem to snap back into themselves. “Let go of me.”
“I said that’s enough, Whumpee. You’re bleeding.”
Whumpee yanked their wrist back towards them but Caretaker didn’t let go. Instead they grabbed Whumpee’s other wrist and clamped their fingers around it too, stopping Whumpee from hurting themself anymore.
Whumpee’s eyes narrowed. “Let go of me, Caretaker! I can look after myself.”
“Clearly you can’t!”
“It’s just a bit of blood!” Whumpee yelled, spit flying from their mouth in anger. “What does it matter?!”
“Blood is meant to be inside your body, Whumpee, not outside.”
“It’s my body,” Whumpee told Caretaker, yanking one of their wrists free. “I’m allowed do what I want to it so let me go.”
“I’m not gonna just stand here and watch you hurt yourself.”
Whumpee let out a crazed, humourless bark of laughter. “Oh, what?” Whumpee asked, eyes glimmering with cruelty. “You want to make me stop, huh? You gonna tie me down like Whumper did because I’m not following your orders? You want to participate like Whumper did?” Whumpee demanded, squaring up to Caretaker, taking a step forward forcing Caretaker back. Whumpee’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Or maybe you want to be the one to make me bleed.”
The question made Caretaker sick. Comparing them to Whumper when all they’ve done is try and help Whumpee? The fact that Whumpee could even make that comparison at all… It was too much. Looking after Whumpee was too much. They let go of Whumpee’s wrist and turned away, walking towards the doors of the gym.
“What? Where are you going now?”
“I told you to stop, Whumpee,” said Caretaker without turning around, pulling off their own gloves. “If you don’t want to, that’s fine. Not my problem.”
Caretaker turned and looked over their shoulder at Whumpee as they opened the door. “But I won’t stand here and watch you finish the job Whumper started. Destroy yourself, why don’t you? You’ll do it on your own.”

Listen I am a SUCKER for conditioned whumpees. Specifically the unconditioning that comes after rescue.
Whumpee being afraid of Caretaker.
Whumpee having to wear a collar and a muzzle because that’s how Whumper kept them.
Whumpee panicking when they mess up or drop something, waiting for Caretaker to get upset and beat them.
Whumpee who won’t eat unless Caretaker orders them to.
Whumpee who doesn’t know what to do if they’re not being dragged around on a chain.
Whumpee who’s afraid of windows and the outdoors because Whumper convinced them everyone and everything outside wanted to hurt them, and they were safer with Whumper.
And everything that comes with that.
Caretaker not knowing what to do and feeling worthless. (Bonus points if they even consider mercy killing Whumpee because maybe they’ll always be afraid of everything and there’s nothing they can do).
Caretaker thinking maybe they DID do something to hurt Whumpee.
Caretaker being upset every time they look at Whumpee because they still insist on wearing the collar and muzzle Whumper bought for them, and Caretaker never wants to see them like that.
But also the good things that come with it!
Caretaker getting a new collar and muzzle made, with padding and lots of extra space for Whumpee to wear while they recover.
Whumpee finally being able to do something without asking Caretaker first, and Caretaker being so proud of them.
Caretaker’s praise and excitement at this makes Whumpee feel proud, too.
I just. I love it so much.

That moment when Caretaker just can't take it anymore. Whumpee has been rescued and will not rest no matter how much Caretaker pleads. They slip a little something into Whumpee's evening tea, just something that would force them to get some sleep.
But as they watch Whumpee slowly drift off to sleep, curled up on the couch, Caretaker steps outside to get some air. Breathe. Because thank all the gods Whumpee is finally sleeping. They don't hear the footsteps behind them and Whumper wrenches a hand into their hair, slamming their head against the banister. And they too drift off to sleep.

I think we spare our Caretakers too much from bystander trauma✨
If you capture your Caretakers alongside your Caretakers don‘t be shy. Give them the trauma from watching Whumpee get whumped! Make them suffer!!
Think of the possibilities!!
Guilt! Imposter Syndrome/pushing their own suffering down (how do they have the right to feel this bad after all they weren‘t hurt)! Do they become overly clingy toward Whumpee?! Paranoid?! Overprotective! Does Whumpee get what‘s going on!? Or do they get mad?! Confused?! Guilty?!
Just sheisbkd. Don‘t spare them✨✨

Whumpee who is always kept just about ill enough to never escape. Whumpee who is always just slightly reliant on whumpee because of this, or whose mind is slightly too hazy to properly understand the situation and how to get out of it.
Whumpee who isn’t ill enough to be useless, but is just about ill enough to not do anything about their situation.
Or, maybe whumper prefers whumpee to be fully reliant on them. They enjoy looking after the ill, useless whumpee, playing caretaker. They’ll spoon feed whumpee, comfort them, then at the end of the day they’ll inject whumpee with more of the thing that is making them unable to look after or be themselves.

The caretaker had to deal with the whumpee’s habits after their rescue, as the whumpee had found that aggression and defiance was the only thing that kept them sane- that alone was fine, but not when the whumper kept trying to hurt the caretaker. The caretaker would have to calm the whumpee down before doing anything- but even that didn’t work sometimes.

"Aren't you tired?"
Caretaker looked up from their book, smiling. It was a habit. Whumpee wasn't even looking at them this time.
"No. I'm okay."
It was a lie. Every time Caretaker closed their eyes, they heard the sound of shattered glass and Whumpee's pained and panicked screams rolling underneath the barricaded door before disappearing into the night.
They weren't going to let that happen ever again.

My favourite whump trope is whumpee revealing to caretaker some of the things whumper did to them, and caretaker is absolutely horrified, but whumpee doesn't quite understand why because they think they deserve everything that happened to them.
Even better if caretaker tries to comfort them, saying they shouldn't have had to experience such horrors, and whumpee just nonchalantly explains that that wasn't even the BAD stuff. That whumper did much worse to them.

Whump ABC #8 - Hidden Injury
Based on the results of this poll.
_
Caretaker grits their teeth as they get up from the chair, the dizziness almost making them sit down again. But they take a deep breath, straighten their shoulders and walk out of their office. Team leader catches up to them on the hallway, placing a hand on their shoulder which makes them flinch.
The sudden movement hurts, the pain immediately shoots through their body, exhausted and almost shaking as their painkillers slowly but surely stop working. But caretaker bites their tongue and hides the agony they are in - there are more important things to do right now. Resting would set the whole team back, they can't risk it.
"Hey, we need you upstairs," team leader says and eyes them for a few seconds. "Lookin' a bit pale, you good?" Caretaker manages a nod and tries to shake off the pain that won't stop throbbing through their whole body, trying to casually lean against the wall as their knees feel like they almost give in.
"Are you sure you are okay? You seem-" but team leader stops in the middle of their sentence to catch caretaker by the arm and guide them softly to the ground as the collapse, feeling hot and cold at the same time. They try to struggle against the hands lifting their shirt, revealing blood soaked bandages around their abdomen.
"How long have you been hiding this?", team leader asks, eyes widened in concern. "Hey, hey ... stay with me, okay?" But caretaker mutters an excuse and feels the pain take over.

give me an exhausted caretaker who keeps pushing past their boundaries. give me a caretaker who always says yes, who takes on everything they can because they have to save everyone. give me a caretaker who drives themself to the point of exhaustion time and time again.
after all, who's going to save whumpee if they don't?

Caretakers who lack resources! Caretakers who have to hold down full time jobs, who have to look after other family, who have to budget carefully. Caretakers who despair at medical bills and how to find and afford therapists. Caretakers on waiting lists for their own issues. Caretakers who don't have first aid kits, don't have cars, don't have a bed in a spare room for whumpee, who can't create a perfectly comfortable space for them to recover.
Caretakers with lives!
And... Whumpers who exploit this!

A Caretaker, who is either really strong or supernatural, and is usually able to take anything thrown at them, no matter if it’s a trap or not. They’re used to barreling through situations in order to save their Whumpee, and come out fine, no matter what happens to them.
This time, however, Whumper has set the perfect trap and has Whumpee ready as bait. They’ve figured out a way to finally subdue Caretaker and incapacitate them. Whumpee thinks it’ll be okay even after Caretaker gets hit, thinking they’ll get up to dust themselves off like they usually do.
Instead, their hope dwindles as they see Caretaker, still sprawled on the ground unable to get up. They see them breathing rapidly with their lips parted and eyebrows furrowed, trying to deal with the pain. Whumpee’s oh shit moment when they see Caretaker try to get up, but it only results in agony, causing them to sink back down and writhe in misery.

whumpee begging to be hurt trope
CW: Intimate Caretaker, mentioned self-harm (by scratching), begging to be hurt
...
It’s been weeks since Whumpee came back, and slowly they were starting to recover. Caretaker has never been so proud, so happy that Whumpee is making progress and starting to be themself again.
Until one day, when Caretaker hears a loud crash. Instinctually, they hurry to the source of the noise and skid to a halt when they see Whumpee, a broken vase below them.
“Whumpee, are you okay?” They slowly walk toward them, kneeling in front of them to look for any cuts, but sigh in relief when they find none. “C’mon, sweetie, let’s--”
“No! It’s okay, I-- I got it!” Whumpee starts picking up the shards of glass with shaking hands.
“Whoa, Whumpee!” They grab their hands and check for any further injuries, gasping quietly when they see a small gash in the palm of their left hand. They look up at Whumpee when they start trembling harder, to realize Whumpee looks positively terrified.
Not at the cut. At Caretaker.
“Please, I’m-- I’m so sorry,” Whumpee stammers in a sob. “It was an accident!”
“Shh, hey, I know, I know it was. You don’t need to be sorry for anything, please don’t feel sorry. I’m just worried, I’ve told you that.”
“Please, just hurt me. Please.”
Caretaker isn’t surprised from the gut wrenching plead. They’ve heard Whumpee beg to be hurt before, like the time Whumpee spilled a cup of water all over the floor, or the time they accidentally hurt Caretaker when they got too close.
This time is different, because never has Caretaker seen Whumpee so sad, so sleep-deprived, so miserable.
“No, Whumpee. I’m not going to hurt you. I’d never hurt you.”
“Why? Why won’t you just forgive me?!”
Never has Whumpee yelled at them. Behind that pained expression, they see anger. Genuine anger, for the first time ever since they got them back.
“What are you talking about? Honey, there’s nothing to forgive you over. You did nothing wrong. I can replace the vase if that’s what you’re worried about, but I promise--”
“No, you don’t get it! If you don’t hurt me, I’m not forgiven! Every mistake I make will never be forgiven because you won’t hurt me!”
Realization along with heartbreak spreads across Caretaker’s face. They thought Whumpee was just begging to be hurt because that’s what they were used to, but they never really considered this. That must also be why Whumpee is always violently scratching themself when they do something they think is wrong.
“Oh, Whumpee.” They inhale sharply and pull them into their arms, circling them around them securely. “You don’t need to be forgiven by being hurt. That isn’t just awful, but what’ll that do in the long-term? It won’t make you learn from your actions, it’ll just make you scared.”
Even if it did have benefits, Caretaker would never lay a hand in anger on Whumpee. They love them to no ends, but they just wish they’d get that through their head already.
“Then how do I learn?”
Caretaker is sure it’s a rhetorical question, but they answer, anyway. “We talk it out; but believe me, Whumpee, you haven’t done anything wrong since you got here. This was just a mistake. Everyone makes them.”
They sniffle, so Caretaker wipes their tears away with their thumb. They smile at how Whumpee leans into the touch, closing their eyes.
“Let’s go clean that cut and bandage it. Does that sound okay to you?”
Whumpee’s eyes open again. “What about the vase?”
“I’ll get a new one after cleaning it up. Do you know how many times I broke that vase, too?”
“Really?”
“Mmhm. At least four different times.” That’s not true, maybe two at most, but they know that’ll make Whumpee feel a little less guilty. They wish they could take that guilt away completely. They wish they could take all of Whumpee’s pain away, even if that meant bearing it for them.
Thankfully, Whumpee gives a grin. It may be tiny, but it still warms Caretaker’s heart more than words can describe.

“You touch them and you’re dead.”
“I’ve done plenty more than touch them, and yet here I am.”
Whumper grinned. Caretaker lunged.

Prompt #112
Touch-starved whumpee who doesn’t know how to ask for comfort
- Whumpee who grows up being denied or ridiculed for their need of affection. Eventually, Whumpee learn to just stop asking because they will never get what they want and will most likely be punished for daring to ask.
- Whumpee who are wary of being open or vulnerable to their teammates because their guardians or the people they grow up with see vulnerability as a weakness. Whumpee has been so conditioned that they are not allowed to ask for comfort so they just close off and deal with it themself. And their teammates don’t know they are truly struggling because they have learned to conceal it so well.
- Whumpee who is taught to not be “selfish” (read: to not ask for anything), so they just don’t ask because they don’t want to bother their teammates.
- Whumpee who takes on the role of a caretaker and put their own needs for comfort aside so they can listen to teammate A’s family issues or be the big spoon because teammate B likes to be the small spoon. They see their touch starvation as something trivial themselves, because their teammates need their touch more and Whumpee can handle themself.
- Whumpee who just melts into someone embrace, soaking up all they can get. Whumpee who hides their disappointment and the feeling of emptiness when the arms inevitably let go and they are alone again.
- Whumpee who is too shy to ask, and is a bit closed off and by themself that people think they don’t like to be touch.
- Whumpee who is very selective about whose touch they want, but has to take any physical comfort they can get because they don’t have any other option.

The caretaker had found the whumpee by complete accident, but of course they couldn’t just leave them with someone like the whumper- but of course, rescue wasn’t easy. The whumpee would hiss and bite them at every turn, the caretaker tried their best to explain that they only wanted to help, but any move they made just made the whumpee think they were being aggressive.
