A JayKara Christmas Scene
T'was the night before Christmas, and all through the house…
Well, a lot of creatures were stirring. This was the El - Todd house we are talking about, which has a very compelling argument to suggest that there is always someone awake within its walls.
But first, we start our tale with Boo. After all, it is nice to work in alphabetical order. Our darling lady was attempting to sneak out of the house, which really should have been her first clue that something would go wrong. When you have a Kryptonian in the house, and a man raised by Bruce Wayne, the idea of sneaking out just should never occur to you.
And yet, here we find Boo, at nine o’clock on Christmas Eve, attempting to whisper down the stairs.
What was going through her mind? Well, we may never know, because she only made it halfway down before the lights turned on, illuminating the aforementioned Kryptonian and member of the Batfam at the bottom of the stairs.
Neither of whom looked particularly impressed.
“Uh… I forgot to put my presents under the tree?” Boo tried, straightening her back and walking down the stairs with all of the confidence that she did not have.
Jason snorted at that, before shaking his head. “Nice try, child, but you have had your presents under the tree for a month.”
It was true- Boo had put the tree up on November Twenty Fifth, and immediately populated it with presents.
“Alright, fine,” Boo sighed, dropping down onto the staircase in far too dramatic a fashion. “Erik and Rori invited me over for a movie.”
“And you thought you had to sneak out?” Kara asked, tilting her head in that way that just screamed I am not mad, I am just disappointed.
Boo had never been able to stand up to that look, so it was a good thing that she was currently sitting. “Maybe?”
“Do you want a lift?” Jason asked.
At this, Boo’s face lit up. “I am allowed to go?”
“Again, why would you think that we would say no?” Jason asked, before gesturing between himself and Kara. “Not prison wardens.”
Boo jumped up off of the stairs, and put an arm around each of the adults that had let her into their home. “Rori is swinging by to pick me up. You two are the best!”
And with that, Boo soon made her escape, to see how her evening would take shape.
Which left Jason and Kara at the foot of the stairs, the next sight not catching them unawares.
Scott had always been far less stealthy than his twin sister, and was walking down the stairs without a care in the world.
“And where are you off to?” Kara asked, a sweet smile on her face.
“The library,” Scott answered, readjusting the strap of his backpack. A backpack which looked far too packed for a trip to the library.
“Try again,” Jason said, his voice brooking no argument.
Scott sighed. “Spending the night with a friend, I hope?”
Kara looked up at Jason, before looking back at Scott with that same sweet smile that had brought down so many villains and bakery owners. “Be safe.”
Scott took the opening, and left without a backward glance, not wanting to leave his evening up to chance.
This left Jason and Kara alone once again, at the bottom of their stairs when
Jason swept Kara up into his arms, putting on all of his charms.
“A house all to ourselves,” Jason said with a smile.
Kara shook her head, placing a hand on her stomach. “I am afraid, not for a while.”
Jason’s step faltered, but was swiftly recovered, for this news that he had just discovered
Was enough to have him asking, “Really?”
“You understand me, darling,” Kara said, putting a hand on Jason’s cheek, “do not be silly.”
So with laughter and mirth, the two retired to their room, the activities which followed easy to assume.
So with this Christmas tale, make sure to sleep tight, and Merry Christmas to all- and to all a good night.

A Wordless Song by NikiFrost
Leaving her manipulative and infamous family behind, Lena Luthor escapes to the quaint little town of Midvale to live in a cabin that once belonged to her biological mother. In need of a handyman for far too many repairs, she hires a recommended local. Enter Kara Danvers, a gentle soul who hasn't spoken a word since she lost her parents at a young age, yet hums the most beautiful wordless songs that will turn Lena's life upside down.
w: 25,439
r: general audiences
So soft and heartwarming! There's art too! Kara is mute in this and the incorporation of ASL was done so so well! Truly a joy to read! Mostly fluff with a little angst (as per their trauma). Bit of James bashing. Some very fun easter-eggs and callbacks to other ships.

K2 by MyCatIsMyEditor
Lena Luthor loves working with her best friend. Granted her best friend is an android her brother made but she still loves working with her. Not that she'd ever tell anyone. Her life is already pathetic enough without everyone knowing she works 100 hour weeks because her closest relationship is with a robot. Not that K2 is the main factor in her hours, no she and her team make revolutionary medical technology for Luthor Corp. She's there because she loves her job, not because sometimes K2 hugs her and it makes her crushing loneliness disappear for a moment.
Kara Zor-El was kidnapped by Lex Luthor when she first landed on Earth and has been kept hidden from the world disguised as a robot ever since. It's not so bad though, his sister found her and brought her to work with her and her team and despite believing she's a robot they treat her as one of their own. It's a little awkward that she has a teeny tiny crush on Lena and Lena thinks she's a robot. But Kara can deal with that. It's not like Lena could do anything even if she did know Kara was a person, Lex made sure of that.

Such an interesting and creative concept and its done so so so well. There's longing and loneliness and connection, fluff and sadness. And a happy ending. (Also pls yall read her other stuff, shes great!)

i don't know you, not really by LavenderMandarin
Set in season 3.
Lena doesn't know Kara is Supergirl and they recently had the argument about kryptonite. Supergirl comes to Lena's balcony one evening, but she doesn't bring up the kryptonite.
or
Supergirl reveals that she's Kara, but she reveals her name last
w: 4,284
r: teen and up
Quite possibly my favorite identity reveal. It digs into Karas feelings and psyche a lot. Feels soft and sad but there's also a deep feeling of connection. Angst meter medium - Lena is mad and its sad so yanno. But happy ending.

A legal loophole by MyCatIsMyEditor
When Kara and Lena left on their weekend trip to Vegas the plan was to spend a few days having fun and posting pictures for Catco Travel to keep Andrea off Kara's back. The plan most definitely didn't include getting drunk and getting married. It also didn't include consumating said marriage and waking up the next morning with their memories intact... mostly.
So what are two best friends to do but get a quick divorce and pretend they didn't have sex or actually mean it when they said they loved each other. Finding out they can't get a quick divorce because of some poor wording in a clause of the Alien Amnesty Act really doesn't help with this new plan.
w: 62,499
r: mature
Its funny and fun and a bit salacious. They are absolutely atrociously insufferable about it. Then they get a little dumb about it for a hot second. Gay hi-jinks and shenanigans of the 'just friends' variety ensue. A little good smut. Lex is being his usual charming self about this - so some badass action too.

A Christmas Princess by AsprinForest
Just before Christmas, an aspiring journalist, Kara Danvers, is sent to the foreign nation of Thorul to cover a press conference given by Princess Lena, who is set to take the throne following her brother's arrest. With all the press surrounding the scandal of the Thorulian Royal family, Kara hopes this could be her big break, but upon her arrival, there is a mix up and Kara finds herself assigned the role of the palace tutor for Lady Ruby. With only two weeks before the real tutor arrives, Kara scrambles to find an exclusive for Catco as well as help Lady Ruby deal with her recent family trauma, but the dark haired princess proves to be quite a distraction
w: 70,137
r: general audiences
Kara accidentally fumbles her way into the inner circle of a royal family and develops a crush on the ruling monarch - as you do. Ruby is a little genius with one leg, Lena is her lovely brilliant self, Kara gets space to reconnect with her East European heritage and gets to be smart. Sweet with a little angst and a happy ending.

According to some rumors
Superman might be erased from the DCEU only to come back later based on Jim Lee’s crisis banner showing a Superman
Making Kara into new 52 Superman before the real one shows up 5/7 years from now
So I have to ask…what would be your ideal movie Superman after this crisis crossover in the future?
Personally…I won’t be surprised if it is a deepfake Christopher Reeve like Luke Skywalker in the book of boba Fett
Christopher Reeve’s likeness is owned by the same company that gave those filmmakers permission to make a CGI James dean
CMG worldwide
So legally there doesn’t seem to be much obstacles for Warners
And 5 years from now…the technology that brought back Luke would advanced to the point where pretty much all of the flaws would be fixed
Looking at it from this perspective…it makes perfect sense why they are waiting 5 years till a crisis crossover before bringing Superman back into the main DCEU
Thoughts?
What anon is referring to is that the Flash movie has had it's first round of test screenings and so we've finally gotten some inkling of what the DCEU will be like going forward. I'm going to just use this to talk about the future of the DCEU since that's more interesting to me right now than writing about other topics. SPOILERS BELOW
Tumblr media
As expected Affleck is written out, although unlike earlier reports where he would die, now he seems to have simply vanished into the Multiverse and sends a message to Barry in the post-credits that teases Crisis. Keaton takes Affleck's place as Batman, becoming the guy who was always the "main" Batman on the new post-Flashpoint Earth, again all in line with previous rumors and announcements. But what of the guy in the center? What about Superman? There were rumors that maybeeeee Cavill would be cameoing in this. Those rumors appear to be false.
From what has been leaked, Cavill's only "cameo" is via archival footage that plays on a TV before Flash reboots time. In the "Flashpoint" we learn that another world's Zod killed baby Kal, not clear if this Zod is indigenous to Keaton's world or not, but Kara Zor-El is the sole survivor of Krypton on Keaton's Earth. At the end of the movie, Keaton and Supergirl replace Batflleck and Cavill. Seemingly there is no Kal-El in the new rebooted Earth, Kara remains the only survivor. People think this because of a line at the end where Flash asks Aquaman "didn't she (Supergirl) use to be a guy (referring to Superman)?" with Aquaman nonchalantly replying good for her. That line seems to be there to establish that there is no Superman around anymore. Cavill isn't erased per say, he still remains in the Snyderverse, which is established to still exist out in the Multiverse, but neither he nor Superman will participate in WB's future plans for the DC franchise on the main Earth. If Cavill were to return, unlikely given he has supposedly rejected every offer WB has made without the promise of another solo Superman movie over which he would get a good deal of creative input, it would be as part of the upcoming Crisis event that WB has decided to start building towards.
Obviously this causes a great deal of continuity clusterfuck, since while Snyder's films are kicked over to the side, Superman has been established to exist in multiple other DC projects. TSS references him and Peacemaker has him cameoing. Shazam heavily references him and has him appearing at the end (from the neck down). I guess we're just going to have to handwave all that away as every time someone mentioned Superman or he showed up, now they instead mentioned Supergirl and she showed up in Superman's place? Going to confuse the hell out of the general audience that's for sure, both funny and infuriating that DC's continuity problems are now spreading to the films.
I take umbrage with Anon referring to Supergirl as New 52 Superman. That's Cavill, not her. He's the dark, edgy Superman reboot that everyone said New 52 Superman was, while she is the more "traditional" Super character who does not kill supposedly, being brought in to replace him. Cavill "dying" to make way for her only adds to the parallels. How do I feel about Cavill getting kicked out? Pretty indifferent actually. I'm working on my thoughts about DCEU Superman in another ask, but in short I do not agree with the common claim that people make about Cavill being a "perfect" Superman who was wasted by Snyder. Sure he looked like a Jim Lee drawing brought to life, but he was stiff and wooden, and while Snyder and the shitty scripts didn't give him much to work with, Gal Gadot still managed to out act him in her brief BvS role. Cavill comes with too much baggage at this point for how mediocre an actor he is, he brings a toxic fanbase who won't accept anything besides their beloved Zaddy's 5 film "arc", he's not a great actor himself - his closest MCU counterpart would be Chris Hemsworth - and Cavill simply refuses to play ball with WB, which has resulted in him ousting himself from the role just like Fisher did. No great loss closing the door on him.
Now how do I feel about Superman, the character, getting erased? Oh I'm fucking livid. They're apparently going to have three Batmen running around and they can't just recast Superman? Bring back Routh for God's sake, he would have no problem being a supporting character for Sasha I'm sure! Or just cast someone new, cast the freaking stunt double they used in Peacemaker for all I care! But no, I guess if Cavill doesn't want to play ball they're going to just give Superman to that weasel Abrams to waste, and Supergirl is going to get to fight Brainiac and do all the cool stuff I wanted to see Superman do because that dumbfuck Snyder wanted to bring in Batman and do his weird cuckoldry crap instead of making a Superman trilogy like he was originally hired to do. Fuck it is so exhausting watching DC and WB endlessly make a mess of DC as a whole and Superman in particular.
For his 85th anniversary in 2023, and for the 10th anniversary of Man of Steel, the film that kicked off this entire catastrophic DC film franchise, WB is... killing Superman as a baby and exiling him as a character from their mainline Earth. Shit it almost makes you laugh doesn't it? It's so perfectly on brand for this company and how they treat Superman. He's a sacrificial lamb slaughtered to get their continuity in order and free themselves from the batshit insane Snyder fanbase.
Tumblr media
Only bright spot in all this is that they might bring in Hoechlin for their big Crisis team up, since he'll be the only "traditional" Clark Kent/Superman in play by the time they get this thing into production, assuming of course that WB can even stay locked on to a course long enough to pull this off. That Jim Lee specifically drew the Hoechlin incarnation of Superman (that's Tal-Rho next to him in the bottom left corner) gives me some small hope of seeing that come to pass. Can't see Cavill returning for this since WB is even less likely to give him what he wants 5-7 years from now when they actually do Crisis than they are right now, so just bring in Hoechlin, Routh, Welling, and I guess maybe CGI Reeve to be the Supermen for this team (alongside whichever of the black Supermen gets made assuming either do).
Maybe after the Crisis we'll get another attempt at Superman in a more traditional setting. Anyone else struck by the irony of what is happening? Hoechlin Superman spun out of the CW Supergirl show, and now any future Superman for the DCEU is likely going to spin out of whatever they do with Sasha Supergirl. History repeats itself yet again! Well I do love Hoechlin so fingers crossed that if they spin a new film Superman out of Supergirl that he'll be a better take than Cavill was. Perhaps a decade from now we will finally, finally, get the Superman reboot on the big screen I've been waiting for.

Everyone is standing around the broken coffee maker
Jason: So. Who broke it? I’m not mad. I just wanna know. Everybody: Kara:….I did. I broke it. Jason: No. No you didn’t. Boo? Boo: Don’t look at me. Look at Bella. Bella: What?! I didn’t break it! Boo: Huh, that’s weird. How’d you even know it was broken? Bella: Because it’s sitting right in front of us and it’s broken. Boo: Suspicious. Bella: No, it’s not! Leia: If it matters, probably not, but Scott was the last one to use it. Scott: Liar! I don’t even drink that crap. Leia: Oh really? Then what were you doing by the coffee maker earlier? Scott: I use the wooden stirrers to push back my cuticles. Everyone knows that, Leia! Kara: Okay, let’s not fight. I broke it. Let me pay for it, Jason. Jason: No! Who broke it? Everyone: Leia: Jason, Boo’s been awfully quiet. Boo: rEALLY?! Everybody: starts arguing Jason, being interviewed: I broke it. I burned my hand so I punched it. I predict 10 minutes from now they’ll be at each other’s throats with warpaint on their faces and a pig head on a stick. Jason: Jason: Good. It was getting a little chummy around here.

Now Everything is gone (I'm left with wounds of battles that I never won)
Lex’s face split in a hard smile as he looked her up and down.
“I will admit, with all the rumors I’ve heard about you I expected a bit more. For one, I did imagine you taller. It’s rather... disappointing.”
Kara smiled. “And I imagined you with more hair.”
His features twisted with rage. Pain flared across her face as one of the guards backhanded her. She spat blood onto the once white stones. Something dripped down her cheek, that guard had been wearing a metal gauntlet, it was pointed at the knuckles.
“This is the great Kryptonian warrior queen, the Last Daughter of Stars. The Girl of Steel.” He scoffed. “And here you are.”
“Here I am.”
...
Or Medieval AU where Kara is the queen of Krypton, Lex is a king hellbent on genocide, and Lena just really hates her family.
CH. 1: An Ivory Dagger
The birds on the tapestries seemed to dance in the dim flickering light of the candles. A small red glare still twisted the colors of their wings, the remnants of fast-fading sunlight. Kara sat stiffly, fingers bunched in her skirts, as the lady in waiting bustled about her, adding candles and straightening pillows. The servant did her best to ignore the dirt and assorted plant life that adorned Kara. The manor received few high-class guests as of late, not on this side of the mountains, not now. The lady-in-waiting-- Eretlen, she believed was the woman’s name-- would have to take what she could get. Eretlen gave a coarse huff, dumping (a little unceremoniously) a new dress on the chaise as she left the room. Kara had insulted her by refusing her offer of attendance. A necessary evil. The less time she spent around these people the safer they would all be. If Eretlen had seen the wound... Kara’s fingers tightened on her dress. Eretlen had been dealt with, it was time to focus on the High Captain. Most women of her stature would have found great difficulty in removing the many layers and skirts, but Kara had been forced to learn quickly. She did her best to scrub the past week or so from her skin with the small basin of water and rag that had been left for her. The water turned pink as she washed her side. A twisted gash was there, four-pointed where the barbs of the arrow had torn at her flesh; the veins around it darkened green. It was getting worse. She was running out of time. This setback would cost her more than she could afford.  Her fingers fumbled with the ties of her new dress, blue silk, expensive-- Rao, how long had it been since she felt silk?--, exhaustion settling in her bones. The pulsing nausea and pain threatened to topple her over. She managed to get the last knot of her chemise tied and was reaching for the corset when the High Captain burst into the room. She jerked around, grabbing (rather belatedly) at the silk dress and did her best to recover what little modesty she could. Cheeks burning and jaw tight she opened her mouth to speak but he raised a silent hand.
“My apologies for the… interruption, but I do think we should speak with some urgency.” His mouth was cracked with a smile, it did not reach his eyes.
“Could the matter not wait until I had finished dressing?”
“No.” His face did not change. He barely blinked. “What, exactly, would a young woman like yourself be doing on this side of the mountains?” Kara cleared her throat.
“I was a part of a merchant caravan. We lost a wheel and had already used our spare. As you may have noticed, being stuck in the night out here isn’t exactly… Pleasant.” His smile slipped, mouth twisting into a grimace.
“I’m sorry. I’ve lost men myself to the night raids here. Were there any survivors?” He was buying it. Thank Rao! He was buying it.
“Not to my knowledge.” She tried to be nonchalant as she brought the corset over her head and began threading it. The High Captain at least had the decency to look embarrassed. He cleared his throat,
“I do apologize for the inconvenience, but on this side of the mountains you really can never be too careful, Mistress...”
    “Danvers. Allura Danvers.”
“High Captain Lockwood of the King’s third division.” He proffered a hand but Kara simply stared at it until it was dropped. He burst in while she was half-dressed and expected courtesy? “As I was saying, there was a skirmish last week about two leagues from where you were found, a group of Kryptonian militants ambushed one of my scouting teams.” Kara did her best to keep her face blank. Ambushed? A scouting team? He dared-- “Luckily there was a squadron in the area and the scouts managed to set off a warning. The squadron went in and quickly rounded up the rabble.” Kara barely managed to hide a wince as she pulled the lacing taut.
“I hope none of your soldiers were hurt. Were the poor scouts alright?” Her mouth seemed to curdle at the words, but they would be expected.
“Oh, yes of course. One man suffered a nasty knock to the head but the secondary squadron arrived just in time.”
“Well, that’s a tremendous relief.” Kara placed a hand to her chest, then feigned a sudden realization.
“Wait! You did catch all of them, right? I wouldn’t like to think they ran into any survivors from my group.” Someone else had to have gotten out. Surely she wasn’t the only survivor. Someone had to take this news back to Argo. Someone.
“There was one.” His eyes had suddenly become icy, the comforting smile gone. “I’m sure you’ve heard of her, she does sit on the Sun throne.” Kara’s blood turned to ice. “She was supposedly quite badly injured in the fighting, an arrow to the gut. So, Mistress Danvers, would you mind terribly to remove your clothing?” Kara froze. She pasted on an expression of righteous indignation and stood.
“Excuse me? How dare y--” He crossed the room in three strides.
“Remove it, or I will do it for you.” His hand was tight around her wrist, a knife pressed against her neck. Kara let out a slow breath, raising her chin. The door might as well have been miles away.
“If you are going to kill me, Lockwood, I’d much prefer to die at least partially clothed.” He smiled, this time, it did reach his eyes.
“Well, look at that. It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Kara Zor-El.”
Someday, Kara was going to burn this entire castle to the ground. Of course, she’d have to escape first to do that, a prospect which seemed ever more unlikely by the day. King Lex Luthor of the Cadmian Empire strode into the cell looking distinctly out of place. The thin slats of light that shone through high windows far above Kara’s head illuminated the large motes of dust that gathered from the floor onto his cloak, dampening the gold embroidery. His lips curled with distaste as he glanced around the blood and filth. But all of his discomfort melted away upon the sight of Kara. She was still only dressed in a shift and corset, now more grey than white, with red-brown stains of dried blood. She kneeled on the hard stone, hands chained over her head, shackles glowing a faint green. Her side burned, an agony she could barely describe.
Something dripped down her cheek, that guard had been wearing a metal gauntlet, it was spiked at the knuckles.
“This is the great Kryptonian warrior queen, the Last Daughter of Stars. The Girl of Steel.” He scoffed. “And here you are.”
    “Here I am.”
Lex smiled again, crouching to eye level with her. “I’m going to kill you, Kryptonian, and when I am done with you, I’m going to hunt down every last one of you filthy creatures, and I will burn them all. Don’t worry,” Lex’s smile grew vicious, “I’ll make sure they survive the smoke long enough to be killed by the flames.” Lex turned to the guards, then stopped, looking back.
“And one more thing, I’ve already dug up a nice plot to bury you all in.” Kara’s jaw tightened and she fought to keep her face calm. Bury them? Yes. Someday, she would reduce this place to less than rubble. Satisfied with his threats, Lex finally spoke with the guards.
“She’s scheduled for execution tomorrow morning, make sure she’s properly broken in by that time, I’d prefer she not become a martyr if we can help it.”
He spared one last glance for her before stalking from the room, the cell door clanging behind him.
“Well,” the guard who had slapped her stepped forward, signaling the others to move as well. “You heard our orders.”
Kara sighed and gritted her teeth. This was going to really suck.
She had never been as grateful for the Luthor obsession with black stone as she did now, back against a wall, desperately pressed into the shadows. Three guards walked past her, torches in hand, armor clanking almost as loudly as her heart beat inside her chest. With her cloak gripped tight in one fist, she hurried down the hall as quickly as she dared, bag jostling on her shoulder.
Three lefts, down two flights then a right. Three lefts, down two flights then a right. Three lefts, down two flights then a right.
As she rounded the last left, she very nearly swore and threw herself backwards, ducking into a nearby storage room, three palace guards marching past where she had just stood. Damn. She was running out of time, the alarm would sound soon and then--
An enormous, clanging tone shook the room.
     Damn.
The guards dropped Kara to the stone and stared as warning bells rang out across the castle. She coughed and readjusted her shift, bloody hands slipping on the stones as she tried to push herself onto all fours.
At least the shackles had been taken off.
The guards dropped Kara to the stone and stared as warning bells rang out across the castle. She coughed and readjusted her shift, bloody hands slipping on the stones as she tried to push herself onto all fours.
At least the shackles had been taken off.
They lay a few feet away, horrible glow still clawing at her flesh. The bells sounded again, Kara realised they were going in a pattern, four rings, a pause and then two. What did it mean? The guards looked between her and the direction of the castle, then sprinted out of the cell, barely remembering to lock the door behind them. Kara reached across to her back, hissing as her fingers met torn flesh. The whip they had used lay several feet away from her. Her chemise was torn across her back, to give them more access, her now unusable corset hung off her, kept up by a few spindly threads. The guard whipping her had been quite offended when Kara had related his swings to that of her rotted mother’s corpse, perhaps antagonizing the man currently beating her with barbed leather was not her smartest plan, but if she was going to die in the morning, she would die with spirit intact. Her back did throb terribly though.
The sound of metal against metal snapped her from her thoughts. Someone was unlocking her cell. She pushed herself upright (well, on her knees still, but more upright than she had been). The door pushed open; Kara steeled herself for the guards… and instead found a pale, dark-haired woman wearing a green cloak stepping inside, staring back over her shoulder. There were two sacks over her other shoulder and keys in her hand. The woman turned, and without wasting a second began to pull items from the smaller sack. Another cloak, blue, a pair of boots and a finely crafted sword, branded with the Luthor house crest. What in Rao’s name--
“I see you’re already unchained. Hurry and put those on, we have very little time.”
Kara gaped.  “Who? What? I-- What’s happening?”
The woman looked up at her with barely concealed terror, “I’m rescuing you, and if this goes well you will be rescuing me. Now please hurry, I set a false trail but that won’t buy us much time.”
She stopped and looked back at Kara, green eyes searching, “You are Kara Zor-El, correct?”
“Yes.”
“Can you stand?”
Kara grimaced. It was taking all of her energy just to kneel here. “I’m not sure.” The woman swore, “Well, I can’t say I didn’t think it might be a possibility.”
The woman reached over and began tying the cloak around Kara’s shoulders; she froze as she caught sight of Kara’s back. She threw the cloak aside.
Kara heard her mutter something that sounded like “Bloodthirsty egomaniacal bastard.” Did she mean the king or her guard? Dazedly, Kara reached over and pulled on one of the boots. The woman fished another weapon from the sack, a small dagger with an ivory, jeweled sheath.
Kara stared. “Well, that certainly won’t draw attention.”
The woman shot Kara an irritated look, “We can pry up the stones for money and bribes.” She unsheathed the dagger and began cutting the sack into strips. Kara bit back a hiss as she wrapped the strips around her torso. Her hands moved with a practiced care. Not a medic but perhaps…
“You’ve seen combat?” The woman’s hands stilled on the linen
“More than I would have liked to.” Kara nodded.
“Have we ever met on the field?”
“My brother generally kept me well away from the infantry.”
“That’s not an answer.” An almost smile ghosted across the woman’s face.
“Depends on how you define meeting on the field. In person? Once or twice.”
“Are you going to tell me who you are?” Kara asked, pulling on her other boot.
The woman tied off the bandages and sheathed the dagger, attaching it to her belt. She hoisted Kara to her feet-- this woman was stronger than she looked. With one of Kara’s arms slung about her shoulder, the woman handed Kara the sword.
“Lena.” She pushed open the cell door. “My name is Lena Luthor.”
Kara choked on air.
