Imagine if Annabeth and Leo went on a quest and they had to do something chemistry related:
Annabeth: Is that hydrochloric acid?
Leo: Wait, let me check. *takes a sip* Nope, it's not spicy enough.
Annabeth: Ah yes of course, there was no other way we could've figured out.
Leo: It's okay, I have my emergency supply of sodium hydroxide. I'll just neutralize it.

The Sandwich Compound, One of the "Star Molecules" of 2023 by C&EN
Tumblr media
The Sandwich Compound🥪 features a structure resembling a sandwich: a single central metal atom sandwiched between two parallel flat aromatic organic rings. Ferrocene, the earliest and most significant sandwich compound, marks the origin of modern organometallic chemistry.
Tumblr media
In August 2023, Professor Peter W. Roesky's research group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany published groundbreaking research in Nature. They successfully sandwiched metals such as strontium (Sr), samarium (Sm), and europium (Eu) between cyclopentadienyl layers, forming an isomorphous series of circular sandwich compounds termed 'cyclocenes'.
These cyclocenes, comprising 18 repeating units, form nearly perfect closed rings in the solid state, paving the way for the development of novel functional organometallic materials (Nature 2023, DOI: 10.1038/s41586-023-06192-4). The cyclocene compounds were also recognized as one of the "star molecules" of 2023 by C&EN. #chemistry #science

I blame my middle school obsession with Dmitri Mendeleev for the fact that even now, in college, whenever I make flashcards for studying chemistry, I can’t help but think about him and his element cards.

Chemistry behind Egyptian blue
Tumblr media
Previously, we discussed Prussian blue as the first modern synthetic pigment, but not the first artificial one. Egyptian blue, considered the earliest synthetic pigment in human history, was adored by ancient Egyptians for its vibrant hue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Initially derived from rare lapis lazuli, scarcity led Egyptians to create Egyptian blue using a blend of sand, limestone, copper slag, and alkali heated in a furnace. This pigment, dating back over 5000 years to Egypt's Naqada III period, was later spread to regions like Mesopotamia, Greece, and the Roman Empire. Following the Roman era, Egyptian blue gradually faded into history, and the production technique was lost. Modern technology has allowed scientists to confirm the chemical composition of Egyptian blue as calcium copper silicate [CaCuSi₄O₁₀].
