Water in my ear
The first mistake was dismissing the early signs of the infection. The second was getting onto the plane home with a burning hot ear. Nadine could have burst her eardrum. She should have known better.
It was just so stupid that after all the danger and risks they took, some water in her ear was what ended up getting her.
Nadine swallowed, and it hurt. The pain radiated through the entire side of her head. She had to keep taking the antibiotics as the doctor prescribed, which meant she had to eat, no matter how little of an appetite she had. Nadine swallowed another painful bite of apple.
She was in a hammock hooked between two walls of an armory. Probably not ideal for someone having intermittent dizzy spells. At her flat in Johannesburg, she'd just be set upon by relatives. She was lying low in an old Shoreline hideout near Cape Town instead. And why was it comforting to her, being alone and surrounded by weapons with a book?
The compound was half-subterranean, hidden by nondescript office buildings on all but one side, and the alarms and locks didn't depend on the frequently load-shedding mains electricity. The entrance was a narrow passageway behind a warehouse. The only Shoreline personnel with knowledge of or access to the location were either reading Tom Clancy inside it or dead.
Sorry, former Shoreline personnel.
I could bury the guns, Nadine thought.
The Kalashnikovs filling the room like sharp stalactites would most likely fall into the wrong hands if she was to unload them on the market. Pun unintended.
I could put soft lighting in and add marble countertops and built-in storage. Charge people to spend vacations in a unique doomsday-prepper-themed AirBnB.
Nadine's ear throbbed. She wriggled deeper into the blanket. The building's end-to-end silence was its own security feature. The scratching of a mouse's feet would be audible.
Unless it was on the side of the wrong ear.
Nadine's phone buzzed. It was Chloe again. She would never have imagined feeling more able to talk to Nathan Drake's old flame than her own family.
Chloe was telling her about wanting to be involved in her local Hindu community more now. She was reading more about it. "In a personal way, you know? I never felt this close to it when Dad was telling me about it."
"What book are you reading right now?" Nadine said.
"The Mahabharata."
Chloe said it so casually.
"The...the whole thing, Frazer?"
"What, like it's hard?"
Nadine fought back a scoff. It would only make her pain worse. "Whatever. I thought you'd recommend an entry-level book to modern Hindu practice or something."
"I guess I want to make sure I'm...I don't know."
Chloe was sighing. God, that had to be bad. Chloe had to be spilling her guts right now if she was letting herself sigh. And there was that nervous laughter of hers.
She wanted to make sure she was doing it correctly. Because Chloe was trying to find one side of her roots and she was guilty for not seeking it sooner. And she was having doubts she even could, because while not everyone had Asav-level epithets to shout, being multiracial was complicated.
And it wasn't like Nadine could tell her something that would make it easier.
"I'm not taking up too much of your time, love?"
"No," Nadine said. "It's good to have a distraction, anyway."
"From what?"
"Ear infection." Nadine had to laugh saying it. "Remember when I got water in my ear?"
There was a slam on the line.
"WHY didn't you TELL me?!"
Nadine winced and pulled the phone away. "Shit! Ow!"
"You let me go on and on about--" Chloe was furious.
"Shut up, Chloe! I--I like hearing about how you feel!"
"--bloody hell! Where are you?"
Nadine muttered, "Nowhere close, if that's what you're asking."
"Did you--Nadine, did you already have it on the flight?!"
"Ja."
"BUGGER! You shouldn't have got on the--"
"Ja," Nadine was speaking through her teeth now. "Stop yelling or I'll hang up."
"Some military professional," Chloe said.
Nadine couldn't even grumble. It hurt. "Because in the military you get excused from air offensives because of water in your ear." Besides helicopters did not share the ear-exploding air pressure differences of commercial airliners. Nadine could never justify the cost of a fighter jet.
"I thought you were about avoiding risks."
It was choppy, like Chloe was pacing about her house gesticulating wildly at the phone.
"Chloe, please stop talking about it," Nadine said. "It's an ear infection. I'm not going to die."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Why was Chloe's voice so broken when she said that. Why did it make Nadine's heart hurt.
"What would you have done?"
"I don't know? Encouraged you to change your flight? Paid for another few nights at the hotel so you could wait till you got better? Gone home with you if your stubborn ass insisted on not wasting money on the nonrefundable--"
"You don't need to babysit me," Nadine snapped.
Chloe fired back, "You sure babysat me, mate, when I had my little coma after getting my bell rung back there."
Nadine swallowed again, and it hurt, again, even without a piece of apple.
She said, softly, "And have you gone to get checked for multiple concussions like I asked you to?"
"What would they do for this old brain in this rubber skull, Nadine?"
Nadine would have laughed, if wouldn't hurt so bad.
"Tell you not to drive until you recover. Don't start. Shut up, Chloe. Tell you to get plenty of rest and come back for follow-up so they can keep an eye on the serious complications that can come from a traumatic brain injury. Oh, just a few things."
"I'll make an appointment," Chloe said. "Just...please tell me where you are. Nadine, I need--"
"You don't."
"Let me--it's not like it's contagious--I could make things a bit easier at least--"
Nadine said, "Talking to you like this already does."
"My ass it does," Chloe wasn't going down without a fight. "You probably have a fever and aren't drinking enough water and I could help you around if you're dizzy and--"
"Ugh!" Nadine bit the edge of her palm. She hated how badly she wanted it. "Shit, Frazer, I'll text you the location. Good luck finding it. You can see a doctor while you're here so I'll know you aren't lying about getting your head checked."
Nadine couldn't believe she was doing this.
"I would never," Chloe said sweetly. "See you soon, love."

Fic writers' 2022 roundup:
I've never done one of these before, but I was tagged by @pikapeppa, so I'll give it a shot!
Words written: 54,050. It's not a lot, but other than the year I wrote my master's thesis, it's the most actual writing I've done in a long time, fanfic or otherwise. I'll count it as an accomplishment!
Smut scenes: Oof. Let's see. 6? We'll go with 6. Across four different fics.
New things I tried: Within the last 12 months, I've dipped my toes into the Arcane fandom and finished/posted 3 parts for my (ongoing?) three-part CaitVi series: Every Small Disaster, Say My Name (Like an Elegy), and It's Psychosomatic. It's been so much fun! Hopefully I'll find another opportunity to do more for this pairing. I definitely want to write more of them in the future!
Fic I spent the most time on: My longest fic was Where The Time Goes. I started Chlodine Week 5 years ago for this tiny, desperately-hanging-on fandom, but never wrote anything substantial for it beyond a few oneshots. This year I spent 2-3 months working on a labor of love that I never expected to go anywhere. It was a fic almost entirely for myself, and so far it's my favorite thing I've ever written. I was so happy when it was finished.
Fic I spent the least time on: The first fic for my CaitVi series, Every Small Disaster. (This was technically posted Christmas of 2021, but I'll count it) It was my first time dipping my toes into the Arcane fandom, and I think it came out swimmingly!
Favorite thing I wrote: Definitely Where The Time Goes. Chlodine will always have a special place in my heart. I can't think of a fandom that's more dear to me than the Uncharted fandom. It's been a light through the toughest years of my life so far. I owe a lot to it, and particularly the Chlodine ship. I don't see it being outranked as my OTP any time soon.
Favorite fic(s) I read: I've read so many AMAZING things this year. This list will be DIFFICULT to narrow down. Here goes:
Violence and Variations by Thisisatree (@dancing-b0nes): The Locked Tomb has made up the majority of my fic and book re-reading in 2022, and this one is no exception. Technically started this one in 2021, but it's still ongoing, so I'll count it. While it's like 60% a Griddlehark fic, and sort of a re-imagining of their lives post-TLT, practically every ship, in all their wonderful configurations, gets their dirty day in the sun. I have been on the edge of my seat for more than a year with this one, and it shows no signs of stopping. Also extremely spicy! I'm so hooked!
Twice by BonesforTime: Another TLT fic, this one's a re-imagining of the events at Canaan House in Gideon the Ninth, with such a unique take on what it means to be a Lyctor and on the dynamics of the cavalier/necromancer relationship. And lore and world-building! Another Griddlehark-focused fic, this one constantly has me in stitches, combined with such a raw, intimate writing style for the smut scenes. Bones has such a way with words, and they continue to amaze me with each new installment. Definitely continuing this one into 2023!
Table Manners by Armengard (@armengard): Y'all know I go absolutely feral for anything by Armengard. Their first contribution to the CaitVi space is no exception. They took me out with a one-shot earlier this year that will undoubtedly be on my fic re-read rotation for years to come. Can't say enough positive things about their entire catalog, so this one is also definitely worth a read. And sooooooo spicy! Whew!
Even The Hardiest Desert Blooms Need to Get Wet Sometimes by Pikapeppa (@pikapeppa): Literally the only writer of MLW ships this lesbian will read these days. Their writing style is just that good. It's so refreshing and engaging that if they decided to author a dictionary, I'd probably read it. I jumped back into the Horizon fandom (extremely late, forgive me) after a major surgery over the summer, and the first thing I did upon playing Forbidden West was dive back into their fics. This one is a Drakkaloy fic, and is not only entertaining, but also extremely spicy. Definitely a must-read!
Your Mouth and Its Flowers by driluth (@driluth): Technically late 2021, but I'll count it. This is a CaitVi AU based on one of my favorite books of 2022, This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. The symbolism! The way Red and Blue are literally Vi and Caitlyn, and are so amazingly portrayed in this AU! Definitely a hidden gem for me to find in 2022! But I'm so glad I did!
Writing goals for next year: I don't have any particular writing goals for 2023. I'm looking forward to the Horizon Forbidden West DLC, so if I can get my hands on a PS VR 2, maybe I'll get inspired to dip a toe into the Horizon fandom. I'm definitely tempted by all the WLW potential for this series. Also more TLT...Alecto is coming in September, so there is still more to work with. We'll see!

I know it’s been a bit since you’ve likely thought about this particular ship but can I say how happy I am that someone else likes the Sam x Nadine ship? I know most of the fandom ships Nadine and Chloe (and I guess ND likes them together to since they repost a ton of art??) which is all fine and good but I don’t know I like the appeal of Sam and Nadine. It feels like I’m doing something wrong though, shipping them when most ship Chlodine 😆
It’s really sad there isn’t more fics of them and the ones that I find are from back in 2018, honestly the Uncharted fandom over on Ao3 is kinda dead at this point which is a bummer. But I just wanted to say thank you, I’m glad I’m not the only one who ships them despite them not being very popular
Hello! 😊
I know, it's been a while since I did anything on Nadine x Sam, but it's still my #1 OTP still to this day! I agree though, it seems Chloe x Nadine has a higher possibility to become canon, but I don't mind either. Uncharted is my favorite game even if I wasn't shipping anyone from it. Perhaps we might get some Nadine x Sam in the Uncharted movies... 👀
Also, don't feel bad that you're into Sam x Nadine. I always fall for the unpopular or rarepairs all the time, so don't feel bad about loving what you love. 😁
I'm guilty though with the fanfics as well lol. I have a lot of unfinished fanfics hovering around. (My fanfic readers will agree 😅) I'm trying to focus more on my original work, but when there is a fanfic idea that peaked my interest, I go for it. If you have a request, I can happily write it up for you though! 😊
And, you're welcome! ☺️ It's good hearing from the Uncharted community from time to time because we are pretty dead now and apparently a lot of people didn't enjoy the Uncharted movie, which I can understand. It's not the same as the original, but I loved it.
Happy shipping! 😊

Warmth. Warm circles, warm hands, warm blood. Sweaty, humid warmth. Sweaty socks. Ick.
“-stupid fucking- why’s this shit so expensive when it doesn’t w-“
Ow. Ow. Fuck’s sake, Nadine.
“Agh- stay still, love…”
Hm. That’s a new one.
It’s all kaleidoscope, when she manages the eye-opening bit. Sun’s setting and spotting her vision, but what’s she need her retinas for, anyway? Fat lot of good her eyes did today.
They’re making it up to her now, though. They brought Nadine into view.
She’s a whole shade brighter with sweat, hair slicked down to her neck; her brow’s in a frightening furrow. She’s got a near perfect handprint of blood on her cheek. Probably Chloe’s blood, now she thinks on it.
That’s right. She’s bleeding out at the moment.
And Nadine hasn’t made her yet, so she licks her bone-dry lips. “Don’t…”
The little gasp in Nadine’s throat could break Chloe’s heart; Nadine’s eyes go round against hers.
“Chloe, fuck’s-“ she coughs, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, “-sake, I thought- what? Don’t what?”
Calloused fingers push Chloe’s bangs aside, hands rough but melting affectionate with time. Her skin rises in goosebumps.
She’s actually getting cold. Weird, that.
“Chloe?”
“Don’t,” Chloe manages, swallowing, “call it a comeback.”
Nadine blinks.
Then scowls, and flicks Chloe’s forehead.
“Ow.” Chloe feigns a wounded tone. “Thought you’d be a bit happier to see me.”
“Over the moon,” Nadine mutters without looking up. “Cunt.”
Wow. Chloe would put a hand to her chest if she had the strength to move.
“Excuse me. Are you angry with me?”
Nadine snorts, not an answer. Chloe furrows.
“For getting shot?”
“I’m something with you.” Nadine barely glances up, hands busy. “Don’t give me enough time to figure it out, yeah?”
“I almost died. You could be kinder to me.”
“I almost lost you; you could…”
Lightbulb — soft tucking of hoarse voice under tight throat. Then Chloe sees it, hiding behind her clenched jaw.
Nadine seems content not to speak any further, but that’s never been enough for Chloe. Especially not now.
“You’re in love with me,” Chloe huffs, out of breath, “aren’t you?”
“Just shut up and let me look at you.”
“Don’t be embarrassed.”
“Annoyed is closer to the mark.”
“I wouldn’t poke fun.”
“Oh, you would absolutely- would you sit still?”
“So that’s a yes, then?” Chloe actually draws eye contact with that. “Because you’re afraid. Of the poking.”
“I’m not afraid of anything.” Nadine reorients her focus down below. “‘cept you dying in this place.”
“Then say it.”
“Arm up.”
“If you say it.”
“I said arm up.”
“Sheesh, fine. Jesus. Bit too close to home?”
“I thought I’d lost you.”
“You’re not gonna lose me. Been through much worse, the both of us. They broke my knees in Trinidad, you know.”
She winces. “Don’t tell me that.”
“Pulled a couple teeth somewhere in Egypt. Made enough there to have them replaced — no one’s the wiser.”
“Keep still-“
“I am. You’re the one shaking-“
“Please,” Nadine’s voice wavers, grinds as she clears her throat. “Please, just…”
“Hey. I’m okay. Take a breath.”
“You can’t do this shit to me. It hurts.”
“The stories?”
“The fucking- everything, Chloe, just. If you know I’m in love with you, then act like it.”
Silence. A long silence. Chloe calculates, studies Nadine’s lost gaze.
“Ditto.”
Nadine’s head snaps up. “Ditto? That’s what you’ve got?”
“What?”
“After all that finessing-“
A kiss shuts her up, if only for a moment. Chloe wins the day.
Drawing back, she grins up at Nadine. “I am.”
“Say it.”
“Arm up!”
If she weren’t actively dying, Nadine would smack her arm back down.

The air in the sauna made Nadine gasp. It felt wrong. It felt like she wasn't really breathing.
Chloe, unfazed, shut the wooden door with its tiny window and sat down on the slatted wooden seats, and Nadine tried to settle in across from her. She watched Chloe pushing her wet black hair behind one shoulder, hotel towel barely covering her breasts. Was there even enough oxygen in this hot elevator-sized crypt for both of them?
"China? Y'alright?"
Nadine bit her lip and shook her head, closing her eyes.
The panic rising in her stomach was irrational. She knew that. War memories rising unbidden, or maybe she just had a new phobia after the past couple of adventures with this battleaxe or the Drake idiots. Maybe it was of the combination of fire and water and being trapped.
Still, the dark, cramped wooden cube was supposed to be relaxing. Chloe was clearly enjoying it. She almost looked to be dozing off, a safe practice in the devil's hotbox for sure.
Nadine gripped her knees. She was starting to shake. Not from cold, obviously. It felt...more involuntary. Like muscle twitches. Her heart was pounding.
Someone could lock us in here. Cook us like lobsters. I don't have my gun with me. Frazer doesn't even have her stupid phone.
"Wait," Nadine burst out.
Chloe looked up at her, about to ladle water onto the heated rocks.
"You really think it's not hot enough in here?" the ex-mercenary said.
"You're the one that's shaking, mate."
Because this is what my version of hell feels like.
"How long's it been?" Chloe was smirking at her now. "Don't tell me you've never been in one before."
"Ja, I haven't missed much."
"Sauna virgin."
"I'm going to kill you in your sleep," Nadine's face was on fire.
"Even Sam's been in a sauna before."
"Did they have to demolish it afterward to get rid of the smell?"
Nadine could just go, walk out, leave the Aussie idiot to turn into biltong in here if she wanted. Chloe's goading shouldn't have an effect on her when she'd put up with so much in her life. Instead, the shaking was getting worse, and she knew she wasn't hiding it by re-wrapping the towel around her upper half. Nadine wasn't even the type to be self-conscious about nudity, but Chloe was obviously staring.
This was the Finns' fault. This was geometry and fluid dynamics's fault. This was Chloe's stupid rewards points getting them a cut-price deal on this campy spa instead of a reasonable business hotel's fault. Nadine should be upstairs in her pajamas watching the Premier League and pretending not to Facebook stalk Lesedi on her phone. Apparently relaxation was not supposed to be fun.
"All right, ready for the ice dip?" Chloe said into the boiling silence.
"What?"
Nadine was so overjoyed at seeing the door open again, a strip of light cutting the penance benches, that she wasn't prepared when Chloe grabbed an armful of ice from the trough (Nadine had assumed it was for champagne bottles that would be brought later) beside the evil room and threw it over herself.
"Bracing!"
This couldn't be how it was done. This had to be a prank. The line between luxury spa treatment and interrogation-room torture method seemed very thin at the moment to Nadine.
"You won't even feel cold after the first minute, china. Try it."
"I'm going to be honest," Nadine said as the treasure hunter continued rubbing ice on her sweat-beaded body. "I think I'd rather die."
And yet. Nadine did not know what possessed her to reach over and grasp a handful of the ice--it seemed to steam and stick to her wet fingers--and then brush it over her shoulder and chest, where her heart was still quaking.
The shudder that went through her was, yes, bracing. Nadine wouldn't call it nice. Or even tolerable. But it made her take a full, deep breath for the first time in what felt like forever.
Climbing to absurd heights and balancing across precipices. Catching runaway trains. She needed to stop letting Chloe rope her into this death wish crap.
Chloe was rubbing the ice on her face now, in large circles, like it was some sort of influencer anti-aging trick. "You weren't happy in there. You should have said something."
Nadine sputtered, "And--and listen to your--"
"My what?"
"Your bullshit," Nadine gritted her teeth. "All of your bullshit, Frazer, always."
"You listen to it anyway. God, it was hard watching you?" She turned to Nadine. "What sort of place is this for bottling all that up?"
Nadine couldn't say anything to that. Couldn't even hold Chloe's television-static eyes.
Because it used to work. For almost her whole family it had worked. And other skills, softer skills, non-close-quarters-combat skills that she was sure she had down were atrophied now.
"I thought everyone hated being in there," Nadine stammered. "I didn't think--people actually liked that."
Chloe didn't have to burst out laughing.

Chapter 21
Sunny’s POV
Orca kicked his way out of the helicopter, clutching the Tusk in his gloved hands. The second he noticed us, he looked around for something to defend himself with. He spotted his gun a few feet away from him and immediately began to launch himself into the dirt for it. Nadine snarled and pulled her gun from her hip with the quickness. “Don’t.” She said simply, pointing the gun at him, her nostrils flaring. He peered up at her from his broken visors. With a disheveled grunt, he sat himself up against the helicopter.
“Ma’am.” He sighed, clutching the Tusk close to him as he breathed raggedly. I watched as Nadine kicked his gun away from him, still keeping her aim at him. “You’re looking well—”
“What the hell have you done with my company?” She snarled.
“Made it profitable, for starters.” He answered smugly.
“I think that was a rhetorical question, love.” Chloe commented, also joining at her side.
“I should’ve shot you back on that godforsaken island.” Nadine growled, tightening her grip on the gun.
“I wish you had. Would’ve spared us the sight of watching you turn tail and run—”
“You’re still breathin’, right?” I said, my hand resting on the handle of my gun.
“Not for long.” Nadine mumbled before all three of us pulled our guns on him, taking a step forward with intent to kill. But we were stopped.
“Alright, alright! Just…. hash your shit out on your own time, okay?” Sam called from behind us before pushing between us to reach a hand out. “The tusk, please?”
“You three? Working together?” Orca chuckled weakly. “Either you’ve got a piss-poor memory or you’re even more desperate than I thought—”
“Jeez, I’m just gettin’ it from all sides today, huh?” Sam grumbled to me before walking away. I gave a short chuckle before adjusting my aim.
“I’m not the one reduced to hustling weapons to ragtag insurgents!” Nadine argued.
“That was always your problem… Thinking too small.” Orca replied with a bloody grin. “You really think I would’ve traded this in for munitions?” The way he said that left a bad feeling in my chest.
“What do you me—” I began to ask.
“I don’t give a shit! Hand over the tusk!” Nadine snapped.
“Hell’s bells…. You’re gonna miss the fireworks, man.” He said eerily, pointing to the train that had just begun to leave the rail yard. My heart skipped as my brows knitted together. I looked to Chloe and I could tell she was thinking the same thing I was.
“I won’t ask twice.” I heard Nadine say.
“Fine.” Orca sighed. “Catch.” He suddenly tossed the tusk towards her and quickly began to reach behind his back for his firearm.
“GUN!” I heard Sam shout. I snapped my gaze back to the man before me just in time to watch him pull his weapon on her. But Sam quickly dove to push Nadine out of the way when he pulled the trigger. They landed to the ground as she put four— shit, maybe six— bullets in Orca’s chest. And he fell limp.
“Nice shot.” Sam murmured.
“Thanks.” Nadine sighed.
“Pattern’s just a little wide but—”
“Get off of me.” Nadine ordered and Sam backed away from her.
“Yeah, sure.” He grumbled, getting up as I walked over to Orca’s now dead body to retrieve the tusk. I ogled it a moment before handing it to Chloe, which she handed to Nadine— completely bypassing Sam. I could see something was troubling Chloe. Her blue eyes narrowed in thought as she paced. I looked over my shoulder as Sam and Nadine began to squabble over pay cuts. In the corner of my eye I spotted a piece of folded up paper. Just out of curiosity, I picked it up and unfolded it. It was a detailed blueprint of….. ‘No… That can’t be right….’ I thought, straining my eyes for a better look. My brain began to put two and two together and a panic began to set in.
“Fuck…” I gasped, aloud. Chloe turned to face me as my face fell.
“What’s up, China?” She asked, approaching me. I was so shaken, I could barely speak. I simply handed her the blueprints and let her read them over. Her eyes widened and her prominent brows narrowed as the words of a harsh reality fell from her lips. “It’s a bomb…” she said. I suddenly heard the two idiots behind me stop their argument for a moment.
“What?” Nadine asked, wanting to be sure she heard correctly. I turned my head and locked eyes with Sam, sadly shaking my head as I stressfully dug my fingers into my now messy curls. He made his way over to us.
“Asav… The bastard traded the Tusk for a bomb.” Chloe told them, meeting them halfway, placing the blueprints in Sam’s hands. He opened them up and his relatively hard expression softened up a bit.
“Fireworks….” Nadine recalled Orca saying before his timely death. When I glanced up at Sam, he seemed as shaken as I was. But I could see the gears in his head moving him to the wrong thing.
“Th-Th—This is big…” he stuttered.
“Yeah— no shit.” I muttered, throwing my arms over my head, folding them on top of my head and pacing. Chloe looked horrified.
“Those tracks run right through the city…. Through the market…” she said softly.
“So then we find the nearest town. Notify the authorities—” Nadine suggested. If we had more time and lived in a perfect world, that would’ve been the smart thing to do. But that just wasn’t true on either fronts.
“It’ll be too late.” I said. “With that bomb type… if it goes off, it’ll kill thousands…”
“And...that is a terrible shame but—” Sam said solemnly, but I knew where he was going with his words. I felt an anger boiling inside me.
“Don’t say it—” I begged quietly for a moment.
“But we did get what we came for…” Sam continued. I scoffed and walked off. “Sunny—”
“You can’t be serious!” I snapped. “Those are innocent people out there!”
“Yeah, I know but Sun—” He tried to reason with me but his reasons weren’t good enough for me.
“You didn’t see when this plane dropped bombs over the city. You did see that mushroom cloud and the fire or hear the screams—”
“Sunny, this isn’t our fight!” He yelled above me.
“WELL IT SHOULD BE!” I screamed. I stared at him a moment in disbelief, my bruised lips trembling.
“Ladies, please talk some sense into her! Chloe?” He looked at Chloe but all she could do was shrug and pace herself. “Nadine…” She looked between the two of us, knowing exactly what we were thinking. Before she could open her mouth, Chloe had already made up her mind. And once she did that, there was no going back. I knew that. She picked up an assault rifle from the ground and cocked it back to check how much ammunition was left before slinging it over her shoulder.
“Wait— you’re not seriously thinking about going after that train, are you?” She asked her. When she didn’t answer, she huffed. “Okay… fine. Do you have a plan?”
“Evidently, that doesn’t seem to be much of a requirement in this organization.” Sam mumbled, looking down at me. Quite frankly, I was disappointed. But what could I expect from someone who’s only ever had to look out for himself.
“Seriously?! You’re just going to let her do this alone?!” Nadine exclaimed at him.
“I… I don’t know!” He shouted defensively.
“She won’t be alone.” I commented, picking up a gun myself and patting bodies down for ammo. I had made up my mind from the very beginning; wishing I could do something. Now was my chance. “I’m goin’ with you.” I told Chloe.
“LIKE HELL YOU ARE!” Sam roared, grabbing my arm.
“WELL I AIN'T STAYIN’ HERE!” I snapped, snatching myself from his grasp. “NOT WHEN I CAN ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING TO HELP THESE PEOPLE, SAM! SOMEONE OTHER THAN MYSELF! But I guess I wouldn’t expect you to understand that.” He stared at me in surprise. Maybe even a bit hurt. But nonetheless, I turned to my friend again, speaking very clearly. “I’m goin’ with you, Chloe. Just tell me what to do.” I said, joining her side.
“No.” Nadine opposed. “No— you said so yourself. This is not our fight! Even if you two blockheads catch that train, what next then? Hmm? Disarm the bomb?!—”
“I’m equipped with the knowledge to do so. I’ve sold and put together bombs like these in the past. I can do it again—” I said rather confidently, my face still as stone.
“That’s not the point, Sunny— this is an impossible job.” Sam objected.
“Maybe so but we’ve got to try, Sam.” Chloe said.
“Frazer—” Nadine began but she was once more interrupted.
“You’re right. This isn’t our fight. It’s my fight.” Chloe insisted. Nadine looked at her in surprise. “That bomb detonates, it’ll spark a civil war. I can’t walk away. I’m tired of walking away…” The look Nadine gave her was absolutely heartbreaking. Her eyes practically glasses over at the thought of losing her.
“You’ll die…” she said weakly.
“I can live with that.” Chloe responded, solemnly yet proud of the decision she’d made. It was the same feeling I had I’m sure. If we died saving thousands of innocents, what were two deaths to anyone?
“Hey—” Chloe said, clearing her throat and trying to end the conversation on a lighter note. There was no time to waste. “Save my share of the Tusk, ‘kay?” She smiled before kissing her cheek and starting for the Jeep. I took a deep breath and turned on my heel to follow when I heard Sam’s withered voice.
“Sunny…” I heard him say. I looked up at him as he approached me. I took a deep breath, trying to ignore the vulnerable look in his eyes; like he might lose me, too. “This is crazy…” he chuckled faintly.
“Yeah. Yeah, it is.” I replied with a relaxed and awkward smile. I’d made peace with dying a long time ago. If it was time for me to go, it was just my time.
“I… I don’t know what you want me to say here…” he said nervously. I placed a hand on his cheek and looked into his bright puppy dog eyes.
“Don’t say anything. Don’t try and stop me either. I need to do this.” I said. We stared at each other for a second before he engulfed my small body in his arms, hugging me tightly before I kissed him deeply. I could feel a small tear fall down his cheek and I wiped it away quickly, not reacting as so to keep his dignity or whatever.
“I love you.” He murmured against my lips as his forehead rested against mine. My heart finally felt full. I smiled before pulling away and hopping into the backseat of the Jeep with Chloe.
I took a deep breath without looking back and placed a hand on Chloe’s shoulder. “Let’s get ‘er dun, Chloe.” I whispered to her.
“Let’s.” She said with a smile. “Sunflower…. Thank you for this. If you change your mind, I completely understa—”
“I’m not goin’ nowhere.” I said to her. Suddenly, in the corner of my eye, I could see Sam approaching the Jeep. Without a word, he climbed into the passenger seat. The two of us just looked at him in surprise.
“What?” He said nonchalantly. “There’s no way you’re leaving me back there with her.” He said, nodding towards Nadine, who was left pacing herself. We both smiled widely and I threw my arms around his neck, kissing his cheek.
“Plus somebody's gotta look out for you.” He said to me. I’d fallen for him even more now. Then suddenly, Nadine appeared by the side of the car without us even noticing, scaring the bejeezus out of Sam.
“Move.” She said.
“No.” He replied plainly. She pulled her hand gun out and pointed it at him.
“I said, move.” She reiterated.
“Jesus, okay…” he frowned, hopping in the backseat with me as she took his place. Chloe smiled at her broadly and she simply replied with a shrug.
“What?” Nadine asked. But there was no reason to question her. So with that, Chloe started up the engine and began our path on the rough terrain to follow the train.
