Chapter 10: Fifteen Seconds

Lexa floats, like a piece of driftwood, in the strange in-between world in the middle of consciousness and slumber. The car rocks gently around her, the radio hums, brief flashes of light break up the darkness behind her eyelids, and Lexa lay cradled in the center of it all, curled up in her seat with the seat warmers on, suspended in that place of limbo where time has no meaning.

At least, until the soft murmur of Clarke's voice breaks through the fog as if from a great distance. Lexa stirs, awareness gradually returning to her. Her lashes flutter as she blinks, cracking her eyes open to see Clarke looking at her with fond amusement.

"Sorry to wake you. I just— I'm coming up on the last toll and I can't find the coin purse. I think it's in the glove box. Which…" She gestures vaguely at the swell of her stomach, one hand still on the wheel. Which she can't reach. Right.

Lexa unravels her legs and spares a moment for a languid stretch before she opens the glove box to pluck out the frog-shaped coin purse she'd hidden there when they'd stopped for dinner earlier. They're already rolling up to the toll booth, so Lexa opens it up and counts out the change Clarke needs, handing it over to her. She yawns, feeling much more awake by the time they're gaining speed again.

"We're close," Clarke tells her, nodding toward her phone plugged in its holder on the dashboard. Lexa doesn't need a glance at the map to tell her that, though. She breathes in deeply and the scent of pine fills her lungs. They've already made it to the outskirts of Polis. The road ahead is flanked on either side by familiar pine trees, stretching up toward a night sky that's starting to lighten, the surplus of stars dwindling as the city's distant artificial lights bleach the sky.

Are you making anything for Clexaweek this year? Any chance of a continuation of Sweety Tweety?

Haha I think I’m done with Sweety Tweety, but you never know; sometimes I think about a wacky engagement one where Sweety spills the beans while they’re trying to pop the question, or just a wedding day one where Sweety loses a ring. Maybe one day. 

I’ve had a bit of a nasty writing block the past couple months (not to mention had to get a new laptop) so I’m hoping reading the new content for CW19 will inspire me and get the ball rolling. As of now, I’m hoping to post a moodboard or two, to finally finish my clexmas fic for my secret Santa, and to work on the next chapter for my Clexa surrogacy au fic. Other than that, we’ll see! :D

Morning comes slowly.

It’s a soft crawl of sunlight up off-white washed walls. It’s a gentle breeze that stirs Clarke’s hair, has her wrinkling her nose at the tickle of a curl on her skin before she ever opens her eyes; has her blowing it away from her face because however she’s laying, it’s far too comfortable to actually move. 

It’s the stutter of her heart as she realizes why she’s so comfortable.

She’s tangled up in Lexa, who is wrapped around her and still sleeping deeply if the steady breaths are anything to go by. They’re so close that the tops of Lexa’s thighs are pressed against the back of Clarke’s, their knees lined up. Her legs are longer, so it has Clarke’s legs folded up higher to compensate; meanwhile, she’s nestled in Lexa’s arms, one hand clutching Lexa’s forearm her head rests against and the other still loosely entwined with Lexa’s hand. Lexa’s face must be buried in Clarke’s hair, because she can feel the warm puffs of her breath against her neck.  

It’s like lightning, the strange mix of panic and delight that tears through Clarke. Maybe she shouldn’t be doing this. Maybe she should pull away, put some space between them.

The idea just makes her clutch Lexa’s hand more tightly. Clarke’s heart jumps again, this time in panic and guilt, when it causes Lexa to stir.

It’s as slow and gradual as it was for Clarke. Lexa’s breath hitches as she finally wakes and registers the position they’re in. Clarke squeezes her eyes more tightly shut and waits for it, waits for Lexa to untangle herself and pull away and for this to be an awkward blip in the trip. Clarke even releases Lexa’s hand, reaching up to casually rub her face and push her hair out of her eyes. She waits for it.

But it doesn’t happen.

Have you read any good clexa fics lately? I’ve been out of reading them (besides yours of course) so I could really use some good suggestions for newer stuff!

i've been shamelessly rereading my old favorites and catching up on my to read list now that i'm taking time off school, so i'm not sure i'm very helpful with the newer stuff — not yet, anyway, because i've been looking for new things to read once i'm where i want to be with my reading. but just in case i'm reading something you're not, here you go!

between our love by @dreamsaremywords. you probably know this one because i mean, it's surrogacy au. it owns my entire heart despite how much it hurts it. clarke is the surrogate mother for costia and lexa's baby, but costia dies suddenly before they even find out she's pregnant. it has everything — tenderness, angst, sweet moments, heartaching ones, a baby. 

hearts of silver and gold by sapphicstardust. it's royalty au! in medieval times!! forbidden love and friends to lovers!!! princess clarke is engaged to prince aden, who happens to be lexa's brother. he's a sweetheart and really wants to make clarke happy, but the woman is falling fast and hard for his sister. i have the softest spot for royalty au, and this is aching in all the right ways

i really thought i was following more on going stories, this is sHAMEFUL. if anyone has recs for newer stories, please please send them my way!!

Chapter 8: Autumn Killed the Summer with the Softest Kiss

Lexa takes a deep breath. Lets it expand in her lungs and then holds it. The sun presses gold and red on her eyelids but she imagines if it were winter. How the air inside her might freeze over one snowflake at a time, like a bubble some carefree child let drift free in the cold.

Warmth on her face and that sharp, bitter bite of ice in her chest. It certainly makes sense.

"Missed what?"

Lexa opens her eyes. She's sitting in a quiet office. A few dust particles float in the muted golden light leaking in through the window blinds. The carpet is a soft green and the chair she sits in, legs drawn up because she's never been able to sit like a normal person for long, is just uncomfortable enough to remind her not to grow too comfortable here.

As if she'd forget.

Her first impression of her new therapist, Becca Franco, was that she had intelligent eyes. Not necessarily kind eyes, but intelligent, though they're not unkind, either. Lexa's not quite sure what to think about it all yet. There's always going to be this shadowy part of her that squirms in its hiding spot, burrowed somewhere deep inside, at the prospect of even considering this. Talking to a stranger about her feelings. She's tried this before. Several times, actually, when she was a child. It never went much further than Lexa, clammed up and silent, eventually offered crayons and coloring pages.

But now here she is. Her wife is dead and her new therapist is staring expectantly at her, cozy in the awkward silence permeating the air. Meanwhile Lexa drowns in it.

“You okay?”

Clarke nods, leaning in to wrap her lips around her straw. “I’m fine, it’s nothing.”

“Are you sure?”

Clarke nods again, and then is saved by the bell when Wells returns from the bathroom, a bright smile stretching across his face when he sees the vanilla shake placed before him.

“So what time’s the party tomorrow?”

Clarke looks up in confusion, just in time to see Lexa’s face wiped clean of any emotion— but Wells winces, as though someone kicked him under the table. Clarke raises a brow at Lexa, who sighs.

“Don’t act as if you didn’t know there’d be a party.”

“I didn’t know,” Clarke grins, slurping her shake.

“Whoops,” Wells says apologetically, cringing at himself. “I’m sorry. I didn’t even think.”

“I’m sure it wasn’t a hard guess,” says Lexa dryly, sipping her own strawberry shake (and ignoring the way Clarke gloats at her for more than one reason).

“It wasn’t. I mean, especially when it happens every year.”

“One of these days you’ll actually be surprised,” Wells says, dipping a fry into his shake, grinning and offering one when Lexa pulls a face, popping it into his mouth when she stubbornly shakes her head.

“What time is it tomorrow?” Clarke asks innocently. She plants her elbow on the table and her chin on her fist, lips curving as Lexa deadpans her. “So I know when to get ready.”

“You’ll find out when you find out,” Lexa tells her. “Eat your burger.”
