Simone Rocha is an Irish designer- some of her designs are depicted above. Her use of texture, and the silhouettes she creates with her garments are eye catching, and I love the overall aesthetic of the work she produces.

When I first started getting into fashion- this designer was the first one whose work I enjoyed consistently.

She has an amazing sense of balance when it comes to fashion and not “overdoing” things in one garment, and I greatly admire her skill and creativity.

For context the revenge dress was worn on 29. 6. 1994, so 9 years after this picture was shot. Princess Diana was known for her rewears, with a little twist. Instead of pulling out the same exact look, she'd mix things up, choosing to pair a skirt from a set with a sweater, or remaking a headband into a necklace. At the ball in the picture, as shown before, she is wearing the same necklace as on the day she showed up to the charity event.

Marriage of State AU Character Designs: The Ocean Queen

Lizzie has two primary character designs for this au, which I currently refer to as Pre-Plot Event and Post-Plot Event, or Tall Lizzie and Taller Lizzie.

Pre-Plot Event/Tall Lizzie is already very clearly The Blue Axolotl, but other than being blue and a bit on the larger side there really isn't anything to distinguish her from the average axolotl hybrid.

In this form she is just barely over seven and a half feet tall, [Relevant Height Chart] so she is still the tallest of the emperors, though if Xornoth thinks tall thoughts and you count their antlers then the two of them are about the same height.

(side note that axolotls are bottom-dwellers, in that in the wild irl they live in the mud at the bottom of their native lake in Mexico. Minecraft axolotls have a wider range, but they still live primarily deep underwater or in caves. All of this is to say, Axolotls do not have great eyesight and primarily navigate by smell. Lizzie, not being only an axolotl, isn't blind but she is definitely near-sighted. She refuses any kind of corrective lenses.)

Lizzie does have three frills on each side of her head, the lowest just at the hinge of her jaw and the others going up behind her ears, these are her gills. (Axolotls have both gills and lungs, but most if not all aquatic hybrids have both gills and lungs, regardless of the nature of their non-hybrid counterparts, with the obvious exceptions of dolphin hybrids and other similar species where they don't have gills at all) The "stalk" part of each frill is blue and the frilly parts are more brown in color.

She has claws and some minimal webbing on her toes and fingers (axolotls don't have a whole lot of that) And also lots of very, very sharp teeth. She does also have a tail.

Post-Plot Lizzie/Taller Lizzie is Ten Foot Tall Lizzie, the blue outline on the height chart. She gets a growth spurt and is just a little bit less humanoid and a little bit more axolotl-oid. Her eyes are completely black after this (and her eyesight has gotten just a little bit worse and her sense of smell better) Her proportions are just the slightest bit...off now too (operating from a humanoid baseline). Her mouth opens just a bit too wide, she has just a few too many teeth, her limbs aren't set quite right and aren't quite the right length. Her tail is much more prominent in this form as well, having gone from basically a steering (in the water) aide to capable of propelling her through the water with a single stroke.

This is also where the fact that The Blue Axolotl is a divine title and not just a description becomes much more obvious.

Costuming!

We have two "oceanic" skins from canon to look at.

The wedding dress and The Blue Axolotl look.

My general take away from these is "high-low hemlines" and "off the shoulder" with a side of *squinting in 'empire waist???'*

When considering what visual effects I wanted for Lizzie in particular the primary consideration was what would underwater royalty look like and why?

And I came away with a combination of "threat display" and "ecosystem"

All of which boiled down comes to a concept of oceanic royal style is made up of easily removable layers.

On the outside you are going to have something thin and billowy, probably with lightly weighted hems so it swirls well. Something that will flow around the individual in question and give them a shifting, flaring silhouette.

and then this piece called Lucid Dream from the ss20 collection.

Very high fantasy vibes specifically of the thin, translucent layers variety.

The key to these thin, translucent layers is that they can be shed in an instant. Because there are going to be lots of situations in which the royal in question has to move quickly, and lots of fabric creates lots of drag. So the long flowy skirts and capes and arm-pieces can be shucked off in seconds and left behind, leaving a much more fitted under-layer.

A lot of these outfits also wouldn't transition well from underwater to over-water, at least without a lot of very specific enchantments (which are a possibility) so its highly likely that for a lot of occasions Lizzie would actually have two outfits made to be very similar, one for underwater and one to change into once she is on land and needs to make a grand entrance without looking like a bedraggled piece of seaweed.

There is also a lot of jewelry and sleeves and accessories made out of lightweight beadwork crafted from shells and such that floats just enough to look cool, as well as heavier pieces more similar to dryland accessories. Beads and shells and strings in hair are also common, usually styled in a way to help keep it out of the face, even when underwater. (Lizzie's space buns are part of this sort of hairstyle.)

EDIT: I completely forgot to mention that Lizzie usually is carrying a trident, both as a ceremonial thing and also as her weapon of choice. It is decorated with bits of prismarine, both charm-style and as inlay, with the glactic enchantment runes engraved in lapis and mother of pearl.

˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ Thank you so much for the ask! ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ I’ve low key always wanted to answer this about Cyfrenne, so I am so glad you asked it hahah c’:

In my brain, I take a lot of inspiration from my favourite Haute Couture designers when I’m imagining how Ren looks, (which is why you see so many pretty dresses on this blog lol) designers like Zuhair Murad, Ellie Saab, Schiaparelli and Iris Van Herpen, who for me, all capture that necessary balance between powerful and delicate in their Couture designs. There's plenty of embellishment and detail that evokes the historical aesthetic that inspires modern Haute Couture (Rococo) but it's streamlined to fit in with the 21st Century.

I think this balancing act between those two dichotomies is really evocative of how I envision Cyfrenne as a character too! There are lots of things about Ren which give her power over other people. Her wealth, her education, even her current occupation; being in charge of a collection – as the archivist and curator, she gets to decide what’s available and to whom! She’s well aware of the breadth of her influence and what doors it can open for her. But at the same time, she’s very delicate emotionally; she’s paranoid and needy and petty and unsure of herself. She craves other people’s validation far too much and so sometimes her boldness and bravado can approach poor taste. (You can say that last part about Haute Couture too c’: )

Of course, it’s a bit hard to translate Murad and Schiaparelli into the items we have in game, and so when I am creating outfits for Ren I try really hard to marry that aesthetic of powerful and delicate with what’s available to me. Most of Ren’s canon glams include high boots and I try to put together outfits which accentuate her neckline (even tho Elezen necks are really long already lol) because Haute Fashion designs are whole pieces, from head to toe, and that’s why they rely on their drape on a tall frame with excellent posture to carry them properly. I also spend a lot of time messing around with gloves, rings and jewellery to try and add a suitable amount of bling bling to evoke the feel of luxury that Coture designs evoke.

have you ever smelled tom ford's black orchid? i saw the commercial and my brain went "oscar isaac" i read the notes, it says aphrodisiac black truffle and ylang ylan, bergamot and bitter orange, sweet black plum, creamy vanilla and woody patchouli. idk it sounds pretty oscar isaac to me (tho it seems quite heavy, lots of different things)

I have smelled it! You can smell it at any Sephora if you’re trying to get a whiff. It is a very popular fragrance, loved by many!

Honestly not my cup of tea, and I would be 😀 if I found out it was Oscar’s scent. Black Orchid is a little aggressive. A lot aggressive. Like diving into an ocean of chocolate syrup and gardenia petals. It fills a room. It’s Charles Gross’ signature scent…. The fragrance is aptly named. Black Orchid would be a good sent for someone to wear at an after hours artist’s Georgia O’Keefe retrospective loft party where everyone is dressed in black coture. The loft would be redolent of vanilla musk for days.

Again that’s my nose, that’s what I smell. Lots of people absolutely love it. For me, that combination of fruity floral mixed with patchouli is my least favorite profile. I’d bet money Black Orchid is made with the same sourced patchouli oil as Black Opium… and even Good Girl by Carolina Herrera. It’s so specific. Those perfumes are super popular, very well liked. That patchouli profile is often associated with “sexy night out” fragrance and they’re not wrong. Bit of a nose-wrinkler for me. But my opinion is in the minority.

Did you see Tom Ford’s movie he directed? Nocturnal Creatures? Amy Adam’s character in that definitely wears Black Opium. At the office. Out for dates. To bed. She’s got the 700ml. It’s the fragrance embodiment of an upper echelon modern art dealership where everyone down to the interns wear Vanta black hidden-luxury coded business attire.

I really love so many of Tom Fords fragrances and if I was to cast one for Oscar Isaac I’d say Beau Du Jour. It’s a classic gentleman, mid-century barbershop scent, lavender forward. But like, lavender exclusif, Lavender like you’ve never smelled before. It’s a daily wear and supremely versatile. Imo it fits his appearance quite well; clean, comfortable, gentleman, daddy— it smells like great taste in music, James Bond, gentle parenting, impressing the in-laws without even trying, playing guitar at a ticketed charity concert, the fresh musky skin of someone who showers twice daily as a habit. Manicured hands, preparing dinner by with a lover- plucking rosemary for a recipe while wearing a canvas apron from Williams Sonoma while Frank Sinatra croons from the record player speakers. Beau De Jour is all those things. Beau De Jour smells especially like this edition of Oscar.
