Exhibition Visits Part 1

JennyMathews- Sewing Conflict

Street Level Photoworks Glasgow Tron Gate

This exhibition was incredibly powerful and left me with a mixed feelings of respect, admiration and grief. so much so that I was almost in tears for much of the day after I departed the exhibition.

It brings together decades of Mathews photographic work spanning across various African countries to Afghanistan

In many ways this exhibition has similarity in themes to the work I am producing for the creative enquiry module, however the personal element in my opinion strikes deeper and unveils the topic in more focused and personal way.

Monday - Exhibition (21.11.22)

Street Level Photoworks

We started with a visit to Street Level Photoworks, where we were introduced to the definition of a zine and were able to see some examples of zines. It was noticed that each zine was practically produced in a different way, which allows us to encourage our creativity. Also, after seeing the paper versions of the zines, we were able to see the FUTUREPROOf 22 exhibition.

2. THE MODERN INSTITUTE - Sight Deserted

the title of Tony Swain show implies a similar abandonment Ostensible landscapes that break upnand reconfigure themselves on old ground.

"Landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, and interiors are among Swain’s subjects, as are more abstract creations infused, nevertheless, with narrative suggestion. Each painting achieves a balance between the painted scene and the newsprint itself, allowing the registration lines, colour bars, and the printed text of its verso to be partially visible within the painting."

Foo Fighters - The Pretender

Dave Grohl, líder de Foo Fighters, es uno de los chabones del mundo de la música que mejor me cae. No sólo porque me gusta mucho su música y estilo (ehh Dave yo te sigo desde Cemento loco eh) sino que siento que es un tipo común y corriente, apasionado por lo que hace, y que merece que le vaya bien y ser multimillonario y coso.

De todas formas confieso que no escuché demasiado Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, el disco del cual forma parte el tema The Pretender que inspiró esta foto. Pero sí siempre me resonó mucho la frase “What If I say I’m not like the others” (“¿Y si digo que no soy como los demás?), quizás porque yo misma siempre me sentí un poco diferente, a veces porque activamente buscaba destacarme de los demás con mis gustos o intereses, y a veces porque simplemente mi personalidad introvertida me convertía un poco en “la rara”.

De la misma manera siempre me pegó la frase “I’m not like them, but I can pretend”, del tema Dumb de Nirvana. Qué se yo, llamémosle complejo de acuariana anti-convenciones e incomprendida.

Dicen que en la etapa de la adolescencia los jóvenes buscan homogeneizarse con su grupo, para tener un sentido de pertenencia y sentirse aceptados. Por eso uno hace una gilada y todos los demás lo festejan y lo siguen. En mi caso siento que fue totalmente al revés porque yo quería diferenciarme de los demás a toda costa, pero creo que en el fondo lo que buscaba era mi propio grupo. Uno que en vez de ir a bailar a Caix (ah listo qué señora) prefiriera ir al Musimundo de Flores a escuchar el nuevo disco de los Foo en esas maquinolas con los auriculares gigantes.

PD: La torta de naranja de la foto la hice yo, y estaba riquísima. Si alguien quiere le receta, chifle.

Sobre el proceso creativo

Para quienes estén interesados, les cuento un poco cómo fue tomando forma esta composición.

Primero pensé una buena forma de ilustrar “algo diferente a los demás”, y ahí es donde la torta de naranja me vino genial.

La fotografié y luego edité en Photoshop el cuadrado violeta, agregué la frase y algunos efectos.

Al terminar noté que me había quedado una foto cuadrada con un título que re daba tapa de longplay, así que la convertí en eso y agregué el disco saliendo del sobre.
