i hate that two versions of ppl can coexist in my head. like I knew a guy in our friend group growing up, class clown, v charismatic, who ended up becoming a rapist. looking back there were red flags but I don’t how how I would have seen them as a sheltered high schooler. but anyways when I think of him now I just see red, I hate him for what he did to so many people I know, and even to me to a certain extent. but that doesn’t mean that I don’t also occasionally remember something funny he once said and catch myself snorting before I remember what he became later on. I’ll remember my ex who emotionally manipulated and abused me, and I’ll remember how unbelievably romantic she was, and all the fun trips we took, while in the same moment remembering how she would wait till I was a sleep deprived mess or on the way to work in the mornings to scream at me or argue with me until I cried. i think of these people as monsters looking back at their behavior (or what was revealed to me about their behavior after they were already out of my life), but they’re also humans who don’t sit down every day and plot out how to ruin peoples lives in their evil lairs. I’m not making an excuse for their behaviors, let me make that very clear, I just feel like we tend to blame assault and abuse survivors for not leaving sooner or not seeing signs soon enough without acknowledging how multifaceted people can be. especially when someone is charming and knows how to manipulate others. it’s hard to trust people, and even harder to admit that someone you thought was a good person hurt you or others you care about.
