18|10|2023
Today I was more productive than I expected to be. I have been struggling a lot with focusing, and today it wasn't an exception, but I still crossed out all the tasks of my daily to do list. Autumn is definitely here, the temperatures got very low, and we also got the first rain today. Tomorrow it's going to be a bit annoying to commute if it will rain again, but I am not too mad at finally having proper autumnal weather. I am walking around the house wrapped in a blanket at all times, but that is my regular form for most of the year. I am still feeling a bit stuck with my crochet project, so I am trying not to force myself, because it's a hobby and not a job, but at the same time I would like to pick it up again because since my energies are so low I am spending more of my free time watching digital screens and it's not ideal. The thing is that I would normally read in my free time to shut off my brain and relax, but right now I am way too tired to also read in my free time. I end up listening to podcasts which are fun, but if I am not crocheting while doing that I am either playing some mindlss games or coloring on my tablet, which is still a digital screen, and my eyes aren't happy about it. I am thankfully getting a bit of reading done with graphic novels since I have decided to reread the first five volumes of Something Is KIlling The Children, but I feel like I haven't found the right balance for my free time yet.
Cozy hobbit autumn activities and productivity:
read first thing in the morning
daily Irish practice on duolingo (after creating yet again a review plan to go alongside the units I have not worked on yet. Because of course right after I was done with my big review they changed everything and now everything looks different and there is some vocab I never worked on)
listened and wrote notes for a lecture of my power practices and men theories class
finished reading and highlighting the article I had to read about The Merchant Of Venice
updated my reading journal
worked on a series of future bookish posts
continued listening to the mistholme museum podcast (which I am really enjoying! I found out about it quite randomly because it was recommended to me on spotify, but now I am really invested in it)
packed my backpack for class tomorrow and picked out an outfit already (being nice to future me so they won't have to worry about it tomorrow)
reorganized my sweater drawer

busuu is just. So much better than duolingo in every single aspect. I have been making significant progress in my korean skills in only 10 days, and i am so excited to learn more!
the mix between actual videos of native speakers saying the sentences, to audio, to text only, to images, to actual writing/speaking exercises, the little fun facts and explanations on grammar and sentence structure, or even just highlighting meanings of specific words is so good. I’ve even started to adore the community feature and am excited to have my own lessons corrected!
aside from actual language learning aspects and just app design wise:
- currently ads are super non invasive, only about their subscription service, and are only 15 seconds before starting a lesson,
- there’s no shitty gem store, you can just stop during a lesson and pick up where you left off and it will still count towards your streak,
- skipped days count towards your streak (!),
- streak “shields” refill automatically. no need to buy them (altho i also haven’t run out of them yet! so no idea what happens then)
- lessons are divided into chapters and are clearly labeled, so you actually know what you’ll learn in each lesson and can find ones you want to redo more easily,
- plus they tell you how long the lesson is going to take. (game changer. genuinely a game changer)
- and while i’ll miss the little collectibles from quests and monthly stuff it’s just so much more stress free + i’m not just encouraged to do lessons/quests to gain badges (which duolingo only uses to pump more ads at you) or uphold my streak, but because i actually wanna do the next lesson!
- there’s still a leaderboard and daily quests, but they feel more subtle and easily reachable, also not as mandatory, in a way
only downsides so far are no dark mode, the font can be a bit small for hangeul, and you can’t just search for other users (like, your actual friends) (or i just haven’t figured out how to) but like. i’m willing to compromise that for actual language learning that is fun and useful. no more gibberish sentences and ai-generated audio samples this course is made by humans lmao
So here’s to reaching a 1000 day streak on duolingo and ditching that shit owl for my new bestie Busuu!!!!! cannot recommend it more
i’m finally free!!

happy valentine’s to, and yes i have a list:
- my ex boyfriend i dated from new york who i call my ex-husband
- the english situationship who immediately after ending it (y’know after searching through hinge for options whilst still with me) blocked me on bereal yet kept me added on all instagram accounts where i post daily
- the “i can fix him” guy who i spent a year emailing as he refused to text who ended up being the motif for an entire series of worm comics about the things he said. he blocked me on gmail. i still have his sister added on duolingo.
(highlight of the comics was one of him just going, “so, fascism?”)

i always insist i'll do weekly posts and never get around to them, but here's a quick highlights reel of what i've been working on:
writing, in general: i've written every day this month! technically this year, even. i set a GYWO goal of 200,000 words this year and my daily minimum is 545, but i've averaged 944 words per day across re-drafting so it goes and an untitled criminal/cop horror WIP i've been brewing.
so it goes: i've revisited the entire concept and it's morphed from its earlier iterations into a multigenerational saga about a family plagued by death and the ways they cope with it. i've written at least a few hundred words every day; it covers four stories about four different women in the same family, and i've written for three of the four at least once this year, mainly the present-day story of the MC that has always been present, but a little bit for two others.
criminal/cop WIP: i'm working on the details for a new horror WIP involving a private investigator who finds herself embroiled in a serial killer's crimes. i've only done actual drafting on it once this year, but i've started my brainstorming process and it's super energizing right now.
other stuff: i've done yoga every day this month too, and i picked back up with The Artist's Way last saturday; i tried doing it last summer and revisited it in fits and spurts but i'm trying to do a more dedicated practice with it, and i've written my morning pages eight days in a row now. i've also gotten really deeply into astrology over the last month or so and have a 148 day streak in duolingo spanish as of yesterday! i've probably spent about as much time on my google spreadsheets for tracking my different habits and developing my own word count tracker that does all these neat little data points like how often i wrote and on what WIPs which is based on the GYWO tracker as i have on all my other habits, but i am such a nerd for spreadsheets. my second class for my MA started last week and i've already had to read the entirety of The Great Gatsby, and i'm working on Quicksand by Nella Larsen as well. turns out i do love literature classes as much as i remembered, so i'm stoked for this semester!

 Miscellaneous:
Rob Lowe celebrated his birthday on March 17.
Editors’ Choice:
Taylor Swift’s Eras tour kicked off this week! We’re rounding up ten fics titled after or inspired by Taylor’s lyrics - one for each of her albums!
Debut: darling, so it goes (some things are meant to be) by mikaylawrites | Rated M | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | “Hey,” Josh says as he approaches his friend, gesturing in the general direction of the stage. “Who is this?”
Sam rolls his eyes. “I’m doing well, thank you for asking.” When Josh doesn’t respond, Sam gives him what he wants by responding, “It’s Donna.”
“Donna?”
“Donna Moss.” The name sounds vaguely familiar, but Josh can’t put his finger on why. “You know, Donna? She and I were on Andy Wyatt’s tour together last fall? She’s the one who said she didn’t believe I could go shot for shot with her at a dive bar after our St. Louis show and ended up having to drag me back to the hotel and put me into bed afterward.”
The story of rising country singers Josh Lyman and Donna Moss
(Editors’ note: We could not find a West Wing fic titled after debut lyrics, so instead we’re reccing this country music AU partially inspired by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill because of its connection to the first track of the album!)
Fearless: when you’re close I feel like coming undone by pumpkinpatch95 | Rated T | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | Will, after Josh drags everyone to throw snowballs at Donna's window: is this uhh normal Everyone: yeah
Poor Will is trying to figure out the relationship dynamic of his new colleagues. Plus, Josh and Donna know something has changed after Josh's big gesture, but it takes a dance, and some jealousy, for them to finally get it together.
Speak Now: i'll spend forever wondering if you knew by sam_writes_fics | Rated T | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | Josh was hoping that tonight would be different. He was hoping that the maybe for once these things would be fun, like they’re supposed to be, because he was celebrating a man that he believed in. He was a key player in making tonight happen, so it stood to reason that tonight should be fun. He could almost feel it, deep in his bones, that tonight was going to be something special. Something he’d remember for the rest of his life. Something he’d tell his kids about one day.
Red: i watched it begin again by hufflepuffhermione | Rated T | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | In Progress | “Is your name really Donnatella?”
“Well, my mom is Italian,” she says with a sigh. “I go by Donna, though. Donna Moss.”
He tilts his head to the side, taking her in. “I think Donnatella suits you. I might call you that.”
“You’ll waste a lot of breath trying to call me by my full name.”
He thinks she’s going to like this girl. “I have breaths to waste."
.
A year after being forced to resign from his White House position, Josh is looking for his shot to get back into the world of politics. His plan: run a nearly impossible Congressional campaign for Joey Lucas in the California 46th. He expects a difficult campaign, but what he doesn't expect is how meeting Donna Moss is going to change his life.
1989: we never go out of style by jeaniecregg  | Rated G | C. J. Cregg/Toby Ziegler | Complete | CJ and Toby rush to get dressed after morning office sex.
Reputation: only bought this dress so you could take it off by hanyolo | Rated M | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | “Can I tell you one of my fantasies now?” Josh swallows, hands trembling as they come up to undo his top few buttons. “You’re wearing that red dress.”
A flicker of confusion crosses her face.
“What red dress?”
“You had a date.” He clears his throat, lowers his gaze. Can feel himself blushing. “His name was Todd. You were leaving straight from work. And you had on this unbelievable red dress.”
“Oh,” she breathes, eyes wide and awed. “You remember that?”
// josh has a thing for donna in red (as he should)
Lover: sacred new beginnings by JessBakesCakes  | Rated G | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | But now, he doesn’t need her anymore – or he shouldn’t, anyway. So she’ll go back to her apartment, and he’ll go back to work, and things will go back to normal, whatever the hell that means.
There’s something about that idea that makes his stomach churn.
Folklore: sit with you in the trenches by swancharmings for defendingtheearth | Rated T | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | ”So you’ve got health and strength.”
“And we’ll steal the rest?”
“Bet your ass.”
//
Four ways they did exactly that.
Evermore: one for the money, two for the show by octothorpetopus | Rated T | Josh Lyman/Sam Seaborn | Complete | “Will you marry me?” The words left Sam’s mouth in a flood, but the hard part was over, so it seemed. The silent moment following the question of the century stretched off into infinity like the world’s biggest rubber band. And, like all rubber bands, after a moment, it came snapping back.
“I’m sorry.” A beat. “I can’t.” A second beat, this one longer, and much more painful. “And I think maybe we shouldn’t be together anymore.”
Midnights: like we were in paris (we were somewhere else) by BeneathAnOrangeSky  | Rated M | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | In Progress | Josh, Donna, and the worlds they transform together
// or: an ode to Paris (Taylor's Version)
Fics:
Presenting your weekly roundup of fics posted in the tag for The West Wing on Archive of Our Own. If you are so inclined, please be sure to leave the authors some love in the form of kudos or comments. Be mindful of posted warnings/tags for each story.
Josh/Donna
Domestic Days by spooky_spacegirl | Rated G | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | In Progress

this is like the dumbest thing in the world to be sad about and very "woe is me first world problems" i know but the duolingo stuff just. obviously its fucking terrible and highlights the issues with AI generated content and worker treatment but also
i was almost at a year streak, just shy of it, and i was actually honestly pretty proud of that. the last year has been fucking horrid in a million ways and i actually managed to keep up one minuscule positive daily habit, i looked at that stupid owl with the number over his head and felt good about myself, and now i cant bring myself to use that stupid app anymore, and all that work is going to be for "nothing" (i know its not for nothing. tá mé ag foghlaim gaeilge and i will continue to do so, elsewhere)
it just sucks. i dont understand why everything has to suck all the time forever and thats just how it is.

People Who Have Mocked Amber Heard’s Abuse/Supported Johnny Depp
A post so people know who not to give their money or time to. The entire post will be below the line as some go into detail about the mockery of Heard’s rape. This post will be updated.
If you know of anyone not on the list, I will gladly add them to it.
Twisted Fantasies Created a sex toy in the shape of the bottle Johnny Depp used to rape Amber Heard with. Even after heavy criticism they have refused to remove the product, simply changing the name, and keeping their support of Johnny Depp, and then continued to spread the lie that Amber Heard stole Kate Jame’s rape story.
You can read the daily dot article on it.
Milani Cosmetics Created a tiktok claiming that Amber Heard lied about using their color correcting kit to cover her bruises, and claimed that the product wasn’t out at the time she used it. The product, however, was indeed out for sale during the time Amber was being abused by Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s team was only using the kit as an example rather than outright saying that she used Milani’s makeup. When faced with backlash, Milani’s social media started to block people instead of putting out an apology or any other notice.
You can read the glamour magazine article which shows the product was available at the time.
Duolingo Created a tiktok during the trial mocking Amber Heard. When faced with backlash the social media manager used the excuse that they were “only 24yrs old and were still learning”.
Dior Signed a new seven figure deal with Johnny Depp for him to be the face for their “Sauvage Cologne” after the Fairfax Trial.

D&AD Briefs
Tumblr media
I looked into all the briefs given to get a better picture of what’s needed for submission, what each brand is trying to say and the issues they are trying to tackle. I divided them into two piles: one with those I like the most and another with the ones I like the least. I also highlighted the key points and wrote a proposal for each brief, which gives a rough idea of what is expected to be done.
Later, I want to generate some ideas for each of the briefs I have chosen and read the 'Preparing your entries' documents to make sure I am making the right decisions on ideas and outcomes.
Here are the propositions I have extracted from each brief:
1. Penguin - create a new merchandise identity for Penguin that appeals to Gen Z and enhances the reading experience in some way.
2. IMAX - create a 45-60sec film that would showcase IMAX’s ability to deliver immersive experiences.
3. Google - create a typographically-led campaign that calls for action and raises awareness of the chosen issue.
4. Giffgaff - create a set of illustrations/animations to tell Giffgaff’s existing and potential users the story of Giffgaff becoming a B Corp.
5. Ebay - develop a response that brings Gen Z to buy, sell and stay with Ebay.
6. Duolingo - develop an innovative solution that gets people to do their daily maths lessons on Dualingo Maths by keeping it fun and entertaining.
7. William Lawson’s - create a 60sec social-first video for instagram and Youtube that would promote William Lawson’s Highlander Orange to younger drinkers in Belgium.
8. Barclays - develop a solution that would help neurodivergent people with managing their finances.
9. 21 Grams - design a game for mums and dads that are expecting a baby or have a newborn and are struggling with PND.

Today was a calmer study day. In the morning I had my monthly therapy session, and when I got home since it was quite late I decided to postpone my studying to the afternoon. I then made a final study to do list for the next two weeks and highlighted some of the notes I had not fixed yet.
calm hobbit winter activities and productivity:
read first thing in the morning
therapy
continued my witched rewatch
planned my studying for the next two weeks
reread and highilighted notes
daily Irish practice on duolingo
listened to the latest episode of the books unbound podcast
cooked for my family

ADHD STUDY TIPS
I have adhd. I'm taking all online classes this semester for college. Somehow, I'm not failing. Here's what I do that works for me!
1. I have an alarm that makes me do math every morning to turn it off, it's called Alarmy! 📚
2. It also plays a different loud sound every day from random-- I have several hundred(?) ringtones downloaded from Zedge, things like songs from shows I like or Pokemon cries or MBMBAM lines, and this helps me wake up to a different sound I'm bound to like which my brain can't get used to (and then ignore). I highly suggest godzilla roars if you need to be startled awake. 📚
3. This is SUPER HARD but I always try to force myself to sit up in bed when I'm turning off my alarm or checking my phone or whatever, so I'm not tempted to pass out again. I also like to get up and loudly tell my cats "good morning" so I wake us both up 📚
4. PLEASE STOP EATING CEREAL AND BAGELS AND STUFF. You would not BELIEVE the difference it makes when you eat things like fruits and eggs in the morning. NO MORE 10AM NAPS, I'M WATCHING YOU 📚
5. I literally schedule in Duolingo time. If you aren't learning a language you can do some other enriching activity like this, idk. I force myself to do it on my computer, not phone, so I can't lay down in bed when I'm doin it. I have a 101-day streak!! 📚
6. ik this isn't available to everyone but SPACE MATTERS SO MUCH!! I got a gaming desk that we put in our living room and I do ALL of my homework there. I also got a second monitor for my laptop with is SOOOO important if you're multitasking (and we all are, bc we're adhders ibdusvcjkn) 📚
7. HAND WRITE YOUR NOTES!!! I know this is super hard for many people-- I have carpal tunnel so I get it lmao. If you can't, at least type them. YOU THINK YOU CAN MEMORIZE INFO BUT YOU'RE WRONG!! Please write as much as you can i swear it will change ur life 📚
8. COLOURED! PENS!!! These changed the game for me y'all. I take all my notes in at least 2 colours, and I cycle through them a lot. My favs are Pilot Frixions because u can erase them :) (the highlighters are epic too) 📚
9. Make your space fun, but NOT DISTRACTING. I have a plant (his name is Yoshi) and a desk Godzilla (his name is Godzilla) on my desk, but they're out of the way so I can't zone out starin at em. But also, when I'm bored outta my gourd, I can smile at Yoshi and tell him how my day is goin :] 📚
10. SNACKING BAD *BUT*... sometimes i do it anyway... i try to associate certain foods with subjects, like I eat cocoa M&Ms (which are awesome) when I'm reading my Kaqchikel textbook. On the upside, I think it helps me recall Kaqchikel better? but also the language makes me crave mnms adkldigurvn 📚
11. LISTEN TO... CERTAIN MUSIC. I have learned that music with words, even in LANGS I DO NOT KNOW, is HELL for my adhd. Right now I'm listening to stuff like "Pokemon and Chill" (lofi album on YT), Studio Ghibli violin covers, and Night on Bald Mountain 5x on repeat ibjnvc.... I highly suggest songs/videos that are, like, 20+ minutes or else you'll get distracted with the constant change. Also, that No One's Around To Help 1hr vid is REALLY REPETITIVE and therefore PERFECT for when I'm reading textbooks. 📚
12.  EVERY NIGHT... i make a super detailed timetable schedule for the next day, down to the half hour. I don't always follow it but it's a really good reminder of what I gotta do. I write it on a whiteboard but sometimes I also write it on a sticky note and on social media so I don't forget. To do lists are so epic you guys 📚
13. THIS HAS SAVED MY L I F E: at the beginning of the semester I looked at ALL of my syllabi and wrote down EVERY daily task, test, homework, etc BY DATE. this is essentially a premade to do list EVERY DAY for MONTHS and oh my gosh it is the best thing I have ever done. 📚
14. I use the Forest app to track my productivity AND lock me out of apps ndsjv... podomoro timers work well too!!! 📚
15. Ok so for me this is like... a religious thing bc my Patron (my God) is a deity of fire AND working, but I like to light a candle (scented like FALL!!) and do a little prayer on it and I have it next to me when I'm workin on terrible, terrible homework. It helps me feel like my Patron is here with me, but also it’s GREAT for grounding and I can just kinda. Stare blankly at the flame and then get back to tryin to focus. 📚
16. Please drink water lmao, to make sure I drink enough I set little goals like "take a sip after every paragraph you read" 📚
17. Each of my classes has a different coloured notebook which I'm consistent with! Like, all my German notebooks through the years have been green! Also I take notes w green pens a lot in Deutsch 📚
18. HELLA STICKY NOTES... I put em on the bottom of my monitor, on a shelf by my desk, in my books as bookmarks (bad idea lol), on Yoshi. When I wanna go look up something random but I need to focus, I like to write it down on sticky notes to look at later. 📚
19. I'm the most annoying student ever. I like to do a bunch of assignments at once so I don't have to budget my time later, so I'll turn in like 5 things in an hour and then NOTHING for a week. ALSO i email my teachers constantly if I have any questions at all. I work at a pace that works for me!!! 📚
20. I turn off my sound on my phone until I'm done with work bc otherwise I WILL open that notification 📚
22. I make a loooot of chai (and also some overpriced herbal teas). It makes me feel fancy, it's better for me than coffee, and it helps me ground and focus! Plus it's a samefood! 📚
23. Hyperfixating on classic literature would be awesome, except I'm hyperfixating on Gothic and I'm taking a lit class for More Than Just Gothic. But I'm figuring out ways to connect them, which is really helpful, cause I get to enjoy my hyperfixation while learning for school! PLZ TRY TO DO THIS (harder when you're hyperfixating on godzilla :pensivecowboy:) 📚
21. When I have extra time I write my notes like I'm plannin to put em on Tumblr and taggin em as #darkacademia... I never post my notes, but when they look nice it's easier for me to look over em later. Plus it takes me longer to write so I remember it a lil better!! 📚
24. I'm in an awesome academia + studyspo server!! We sometimes study together on call and it's SUCH a good motivator! Here's an invite link if u wanna join, we are nice https://discord.gg/fjuX7TN (this wasn’t meant to be a promo post I just really like this group lol) 📚

Sunday Journal
I was in the middle of a really good match when I was locked out of my account again. If Mom would tell me to get off, I would as soon as a match was over. Why can’t she trust me? It’s so annoying!
I’ve been reading the new book to the minis, and they seem to enjoy it. I also started watching this one show on Netflix with Em. Hensley got upset because Mom said she was too young to watch it. Watching her throw her temper tantrums is one of the usual highlights of my day. It never seems to bother Mom, which is why it’s so funny.
Accomplished today:
Duolingo
Biology review
Hearthstone dailies
Yoga
Read to the minis

Its been a while...
Hello again, friends of friends. Ive been watching Hoarders on netflix and drawing. Im so happy with how my instagram is going and looking lately. Ive been drawing every day and keep consistent. Ive finally found an art style that makes me happy. Im starting to get into daily routines that make me feel better and hopefully will continue to grow into more things.
I started making my bed after i get up everyday. I used to think it was pointless because i would just be gettin back into it again at the end up the day, but it actually helps a lot with feeling mentally and like i have a neat environment that makes me feel like i have more control over my life. My therapist says thats one of my biggest things i have a problem with. I have no control over anything in my life, so i need to find anything i can that i can have control over so it helps me feel better until i can live in a better place. It does help, quite a bit. Im definitely nowhere near getting out but im on my way i think. Im trying to find any footing i can with anything that i can make money from, im in desperate need of some cash. Im down to like $60 in my bank with no income. Im waiting for our stimulus check and taxes to come in. Hopefully that comes soon because i have appointments i have to pay for.
I opened an etsy store, havent made any sales yet but didnt expect to, i dont have much on it atm, mostly print on demand items which i know a lot of people arent big fans of. I wish to make more one of a kind hand made pieces eventually. I did buy a shirt for myself tho to sample and i love it a lot. Theres a pic of it in my instagram irl highlights if you wish to see it.
Well, i dont know if i have anything else to say but i hope everyone else is having an okay day, i feel pretty good, ive been tracking my mood everyday on the app Daylio and learning other languages with duolingo. It smells good outside, like burning leaves with a nice breeze. I have a candle lit and im just chilling, still watching netflix.
I started watching Attack On Titan again, started it over again, i love it and hope to finally finish/catch up on it. I also started playing Dragon Quest Builders, its fun and exactly the kind of game ive been craving lately.
If you have an advice on etsy selling or building daily routines/something i could add to my routine, feel free to hit up my inbox :)
xoxo

The Participatory Culture of Media
In Social media as a participatory culture, Fuchs introduces the term participatory culture, referring to the notion of active contribution, production and use of content by consumers.  Fuchs’ full definition of participatory culture deviates from that of many scholars, emphasizing on the element of participatory democracy, which goes beyond the description of how humans meet on the net, form collectives, create and share content. He implies that it should consider the ownership of platforms/companies, collective decision-making, profit, class and the distribution of material benefits. Participation means that every person should have equal rights to control the system. This is not reflected in today’s social media culture in which power is in the hands of social media companies themselves, capitalism drives what is being distributed and heard (political and non-political advertisements) , the privacy of consumer’s data are under constant threat and the lower class continues to be exploited.
Fuchs also highlights the unhealthy and dangerous realities of the participatory culture in which online communities can easily turn into a propagation of discriminatory beliefs and messages which present themselves in forms such as racist jokes.
Fusch strongly protests against Jenkin’s suggestion that exploitation of users' digital labour is not really a problem if they have social benefits. He argues that the fact that users love these activities does not make them less exploited since social media platforms unfairly benefit monetarily from their work without any compensation. Fusch also believes that scholars have committed reductionism by failing to see that participatory culture is constrained within the established structure of society and rules of capitalism. At the end of the day, the ultimate result of participation is dependent on human agency.
Fusch has put up a convincing argument about the “participatory” culture of social media and pointed out many slighted problems behind this creative, (seemingly) inclusive and generative display of participation. However, he has overstated the extent which commercials and target advertising have dominated the Internet. For example, though most videos recommended by YouTube are produced by global multimedia corporations who paid for this service, it has been proven that many videos produced by the average person can go viral as well. This is because YouTube’s participatory culture allows users viewing decisions to influence the algorithms such that the higher the number of views and likes, the more similar users the video will be recommended to. Other ways the average user can participate is by commenting or flagging comments deemed inappropriate. It is true that reach of websites and social media accounts are unequally distributed among the Internet population, with large corporations and celebrities gaining the attention. However, this seeming lack of visibility of political blogs does not seem to be problematic since internet users do actively seek out secondary sources of information and news to gain the new perspective. Fusch also seem to be missing the point that the power imbalance is not a problem as long as pressing issues continue gain public attention. For example, political movements such as the Me Too movement and Black Lives Matter movement are started on social media accounts of activists who made use of the hashtag and retweet function of Twitter to spread awareness rather than their pre-existing fame. Not every one’s voice is equally heard on social media, but then maybe not every voice matters.
Tumblr media
Fusch has also taken an unnecessarily pessimistic stance on the online communities or cultural communities. As much as anti-sematic and racist ideologies can spread, cultural communities spreading healthy lifestyle, educational resources and prosocial behaviour can also be found. Some examples of such communities include the Mom365 community and Duolingo Community. The Mom365 community covers topics from getting pregnant to birth, baby development to raising children. In this community, parents help each other with their questions and provide one another with moral support. The Duolingo Community provide a supportive network and platform for members to learn various languages together through courses and materials.
Tumblr media
Lastly, unlike Fusch I believe that the exploitation of digital labour remains harmless. As Tim Wu expresses, “We are all producing free labour”. But can the content we casually post online really be considered “labour”? Perhaps, the content we publish online will never rightfully belong to us as intellectual property unless we have obtained copyrights. Until then, social media users can continue to engage in free labour and share content about their daily lives with the public, knowing that ultimately platforms legally benefit from their contributions. If not, one solution would be to create content on websites like Wikipedia instead which is a non-profit organisation and hence does not monetise the contributed content.

Staying Home Survival Guide Through The Eyes of A Flight Attendant
Tumblr media
A couple years ago I found myself having to stay home due to an injury. I had spent over a decade in the air interacting with over 600 people a day, then one day, BOOM - isolation! The adjustment was HUGE. I quickly found myself in a dark hole. I didn't even understand how the lack of outside human interaction would cause my vision and outlook to darken. Unable to drive, unable to work, unable to even physically do many things that most of us take for granted, I needed to quickly figure out a way to keep my mental health, well, healthy. Through trial and error I did just that - not only survived but thrived. Here are some basic simple steps I took to make life roll on and forward in positive motion.
See the Quads
We all have 4 quadrants to our day:
Morning
Afternoon
Evening
Nightime
It is important to recognize those four and highlight them. Every day regardless if you are home or out and about, you still have those 4 quadrants. Write down on a chalk board, white board or piece of paper the four quadrants, or as I like to call them, The Quads. Make sure it is somewhere you can see it. It may help to make a pie chart, and divide it into 4 sections.
Now that we see these four quads, our day suddenly seems very manageable. We have just regained control by this simple step.
Make a List
(We call this our "Can Do" List)
*avoid "to do" list as that can trigger anxiety.
LIST EVERYTHING!
Example:
wake up
brush teeth
make breakfast
have coffee
shower
get dressed
call dad
put laundry in wash
read chapter 2 of book
make lunch (tuna melt? new recipe?)
walk around the block
watch remember the titans
put clothes in dryer
organize spice cabinet
go through closet
prepare dinner
dishes
mediate
make a vision board
check the mail
make a cup of tea
FaceTime a friend
stretch/exercise
practice duolingo
prepare for bed
relax and reflect
Ok, you get the idea. Writing down a list of all the things you may or may not do that day begins your day with purpose and clarity. As you move about your quads during the day be sure you scratch off the items you have done off of your list creating accomplishment.
Get dressed every day like you are meeting a friend for lunch. EVERYDAY.
It is very easy to stay in sweats, comfy cozies, or pj's while being stuck at home. While this is great to do on a weekend day while you are working outside of the house, or while you are sick, doing this daily without interacting with the outside world is a quick way to fall into a slump. Important! Dress everyday like you are leaving the house.
Think of your goals, hobbies or something new you always wanted to try.
It may not be possible during your home bound state to do a lot of things you would like, however there is nothing stoping you from planning out the future of when you return. Magic happens in our soul when we start to dream about the future. Is back packing through Europe on your bucket list? What kind of backpack would you take? What supplies would go in it? What shoes would you wear? What is the cost associated? What is the time frame you would need? What socks will keep your feet protected? Take the opportunity you have right now at home to really dive into the things you have said you always wanted to do or try.
Connection
Stay connected with the outside world. There are many ways to accomplish this: Email, text, phone, FaceTime, social media, or writing an ol' fashion letter. Relationships are our glue in life. Interesting enough, just making the initiation of contact fulfills our desire of that life glue. Reach out without the expectation of response. We do not want to create an unhealthy dependance on others responding to our every contact initiation. If we are dependent on the other end answering it could lead to disappointment and frustration.
Get Outside
Go outside regardless of the weather. Taking a walk or stroll, no matter the distance, is one of the best things you can do. Changing the air we breath and the environment we are in is essential. Everyday step outside and walk.
Celebrate
There is nearly a holiday everyday from National Doughnut Day (June 5th by the way) to Christmas, CELEBRATE them. Do you enjoy watching the Oscars? Have a party! Even if it is a party of one. Go into your closet, dress to the nines, decorate, poor something sparkly and watch the event. Celebrating things big or very small is a great reminder that life is worth celebrating.
Meditate
There are multiple benefits of meditation. I have found that even 10 minutes has a profound impact. Focus on your breath. Inhale … Exhale … In …. Out … Headspace.com is a great source if your new to meditation. Meditation can be done anytime, anywhere, and during any metal state. Bringing meditation to your day will keep you grounded during your current circumstance. Meditating is like someone is giving you a flashlight in a dark room. Yes, you can make it out of the dark room without it, but it may be difficult. When you have a flash light… ahhhh better, so much better. Meditating is just ahhhh better, so much better.
This is not an article full of suggestions of what to do when stuck at home, there are plenty of those. This is a survival guide. Staying at home for any reason can be mentally tough, so give your self a break! Just as with anything, sometimes you just need to give yourself a break, a cheat day. It is possible that you find yourself in bed all day binging a new show and That Is Okay. The important thing is that the following day you get up and enjoy the quads of the day.
