Down the ancient corridors through the gates of time, run the ghosts of dreams that we have left behind.

Same Old Lang Syne
We drank a toast to innocence / We drank a toast to now / And tried to reach beyond the emptiness / But neither one knew how
We drank a toast to innocence / We drank a toast to time / Reliving in our eloquence / Another auld lang syne

Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you
Stronger than any mountain cathedral
Truer than any tree ever grew
Deeper than any forest primeval
I am in love with you
I'll bring fire in the winters
You'll send showers in the springs
We'll fly through the falls and summers
With love on our wings
Through the years as the fire starts to mellow
Burning lines in the book of our lives
Though the binding cracks and the pages start to yellow
I'll be in love with you
I'll be in love with you
Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
Higher than any bird ever flew
Longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you
I am in love with you

I got a Dan Fogelberg tape for 10 cents at a garage sale last month solely because it had the song Same Auld Lang Syne on it. I saw that it was the last one listed on its side, so I put it in my car's tape deck and listened to the whole side on my drive home. I didn't notice how many songs there were ahead of it or what their titles were, and the case listed them in random order, "see label for sequence," , so I spent the better part of half an hour listening to random folk rock love ballads, waiting patiently for Same Auld Lang Syne. After four or five songs, everything stopped and I heard a weird hissing noise. I thought "ah shit, it ate the tape, I ruined it," but no, it ejected just fine. Turns out I had put the wrong side up and was waiting for a song that would never play. I realized this the second I pulled into my apartment complex. My drive was over, it was time to go inside, but I hadn't gotten to hear the song I was waiting for. It was like 90 degrees outside, and my AC doesn't work, so I really didn't feel like spending the next few minutes stewing in my parked car while fast-forwarding the correct side, but yeah, I spent the next few minutes stewing in my parked car while fast-forwarding the correct side... I listened to Same Auld Lang Syne in sweltering heat out of spite, which is a very different emotion than the song intends to make you feel. I could have driven around the block to get the air flowing, but it was the principle of the thing that kept me stationary. That, and the fact that I had finally landed the good parking space right next to my stairwell, and if I had driven away someone else would have taken it immediately.

Another Tradition
While back in SC for a few days, I had breakfast with a friend who for years, I used to spend some time with . . . usually at least once a week.
I moved away, he moved away, I moved back and then he moved back and I am now home & away. Earlier this week, we spent almost two hours catching up on our respective victories and defeats. We both displayed rigorous honesty (absence of the intent to…
