Y/N 'Duchenne' Hannigan has always been a wall flower- well, maybe 'wallflower' was the wrong word. Duchenne was strong, strong enough to keep up with her Uncle Remy and her brother Michael on the family ranch. She's pretty too, but pretty didn't get you far in Florence, Montana. 

She grew up with the notion that she had to work hard, that was the only way she was going to get what she wanted. It never came down to looks or personality, after all, nothing in Montana seemed to matter outside of hard work and a good handshake, except maybe a promise. Those things went together better than anything else; people made their living from that. 

"If you wanna be a big dog, you need to get off the porch," Uncle Remy's broken record words found their way out of his mouth every morning over cups of coffee, something she started drinking way too young. 

"I know, Uncle Rem," She would whisper, pushing her glasses up her nose. The large golden frames overtook the gentle features of her face. She hated them, from the way they slid down her nose to the never ending smudging she had to deal with all day. She often slipped them off of her face the moment she got to school. They found a home in her backpack with the never ending supply of stationary and her good pens. 

It was difficult to navigate so many different facets of life at once, pulling her weight of the work while going to school full time, being the only girl of the family left her to figure out many things for herself. 

The moments she had alone, she read the classics and wrote in her journal. She learned how to be a woman through the books she read, each new novel, a new woman to each her the ways of the world. Duchenne loved words. Simple as that. She wanted to live and breathe them, surround herself with nothing but scripture from the greats and those who inspired her. 

More often than not, though, she found herself day dreaming. The object of her affection being Bob Floyd. The pair had grown up in the same town, they'd always gone to school together, but separate classes kept them apart, acquaintances. That was, until freshman year of high school. She loved his kind eyes, eyes often hid behind the shaggy hair he let fall into his face. Maybe it was the cowboy hat he wore or the way his sleeves were always rolled up to his elbows. Whatever it had been, she was in deep for Bob Floyd, somewhere between a childhood crush and a Bennet and Darcy love story.

The day he started the swim team was the day everything spiraled out of control. Instead of saying hello to her in the hallway, he began walking past, his eyeline always kept just above her head. 

Robert Floyd was a kid with passion. He had a dream. WSO, the title sounded like music to his ears. The idea that he would be in charge of a pilot, thousands of miles above the ground, nothing around him but the bluest skies. That's what he wanted, more than anything. 

So, Bob started telling himself that he avoided Duchenne because he didn't need the distraction. The ranch girl who always had her head stuck in some stuffy book was going to be his downfall, and he knew it. Maybe it was the way her hair stuck out in all sorts of directions or the fact that her clothes were always well worn in and faded in just the right places. 

As time went on, he got meaner. The voices of his teammates playing over and over in his head. "We are your friends, you've got everything you need right here on this team," and so he tried to make himself believe it. After all, if he swam well he could get scholarships, and that money would bring him one step closer to the Navy. 

Who was he to question the word of his team. After all, your word held just as much weight as any handshake in Florence, that much he could guarantee. So he followed in their footsteps, stroke for stroke, narrowing his vision to only what would get him closer to achieving his dream. And, unfortunately, that didn't include her. 

But, oh, god, Bob liked her. He liked the way her name rolled of his lips and the way she was always helping out, using her off periods to volunteer with the front office staff, filing paperwork and running errands. He liked Duchenne so much that he started volunteering too. 

Then he started slipping at swim practice, and once in a meet. His brain was stuck on the image of Duchenne sitting in the back of their math class, large gold framed glasses dwarfing her beautiful face. He watched as she pushed them up with her knuckles, her focus on the test in front of her. She stuck her tongue out in concentration, and that in itself did Bob in. 

He caught himself thinking of that memory often... maybe too often. That's when his own voice took over the ones of his teammates that had been on repeat in his head for the last few months. "For the Navy," he would chant in his head like a prayer. That's all that mattered.

It mattered even more than her. Bob made his choice, leaving Duchenne to question where their friendship went wrong with every cruel word that left his tongue.

2015: Wade texts Jennie about food. Wanda posts about picking someone up and restocking wine. Angel posts about having cooked for everyone and texts Gabriel, searching for a sign of life. Wade and Jubilee texts Marie-Ange about being confused about Wanda being alive and Adrienne does the same with Amanda. Clarice posts about her New!Me loving shopping. Jubilee mails the P1 people about doing a remembrance for Remy and Ororo. Jean Grey meets Warren Worthington at an exhibition opening. Laurie texts Kyle, searching for a sign of life. Jean emails Angelo about being in town. Marius posts about leaving for Australia. Wade checks how Adrienne is doing. Marie-Ange emails the P1 X-Force people about rebuilding. Wade brings Jennie some food and they decide that he needs dance lessons. An amnesiac Rogue returns to her suite from the medlab and finds Adrienne napping in her bed. Wanda posts a Magneto thread alert to the team comm. Kyle posts about heading out in February and March. Rogue texts Adrienne about there being McDonalds and posts about her amnesia. Wanda finds Jubilee working herself to exhaustion and brings her food while they discuss the situation with X-Force. Lorna meets newcomer, Bobbi Morse, who has the suite across from her. The survivors of the original X-Force gather for a memorial to their fallen comrades, masked as a poker game in the boathouse.

2016: An especially excited Alex lets everyone know that it’s snowing outside, leading to snowmen and Frozen references; Darcy helps Alex enjoy his first snow. Jean, Emma and Rachel enjoy well-deserved spa time after their adventure on the astral plane.

2017: Angelo takes Maya out to do some volunteer work and they have an interesting ethical conversation on the bus. Jubilee can’t sleep and seeks out Warren to watch movies with. Miles reflects on the coverage he (as Spider-Man) is receiving from the Daily Bugle.

2018: Bobby makes a journal entry to share a music video. Doug wants to use a particular swordfighting move he saw in a vid.

Mostly bc my interactions with the X-Men fandom have been limited to Erik, Charles, Raven, and Remy. I RPd an Erik and three different versions of Raven/Mystique at one point. One of my Ravens was in a Marvel Uni RP Twitter group, and she had a relationship with Remy. They called them Ramen. LOL anyway... I do enjoy the X-Men movies, but I'm super unfamiliar with the majority of the characters. I only got into Cherik after X-Men: First Class, and that was mostly bc of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy. Same with Raven. JLaw was my first fictional wifey (I consequently left her for Brie Larson, but I still love me some JLaw), and I actually immensely dislike Rebecca Romijn. In saying all that, while I don't have an issue with James Marsden, and in fact enjoy him in many many movies, I do not now nor have I ever liked January Jones. Her casting as Emma Frost was meh for me. Emma Frost was meh for me. Until I joined that Marvel Uni RP group. After I got Raven going, I added two more characters. A super ditzy Darcy and biology professor with a hidden agenda, Nathaniel Essex, aka Mr. Sinister. My Essex became involved in a sordid love affair with Emma Frost, a grad student, and when things with the group went sour, Emma's writer and I took our characters out and continued to RP on our own. She wasn't a fan of JJ's, but Emma Frost was her #1. She started out using Jennifer Morrison but later changed her to Blake Lively. I used Ewan McGregor for Essex. Anyway, the RP made me a fan of Emma's, tho I don't really interact with much media of her anymore. So, maybe it's not that I don't ship it. I'm sure if I read more fics of them, I might.

What would have made you like it?

Being more familiar with the characters, probably. And a better actress, lol.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

So how would you mash up Awful First Meeting and Accidentally Married AUs?

I WOULD… give Darcy Lewis the backstory of being from a side branch of the main family that leads the Smuggler’s Guild in New Orleans.  Her pa took her ma’s name when he converted, disavowed ties to the business, and set himself straight.  He didn’t dump his family, he just went legit, and they were okay with that so long as he let his children make an informed choice about whether or not they wanted to be in the business.

Darcy’s older brother Dan decided to become a doctor.  Her little siblings hadn’t made their decision yet.  Darcy herself was still on the fence, and as such she went for “lessons” on a regular basis (and partially to keep an eye on the twins).  During her adventures in New Orleans, she once got into a bit of a pickle and ended up, what with one thing and another, owing a favor to Bella Donna Boudreaux - not a position any right thinking person wants to be in.

Darcy also has a few unfortunate run-ins with the new Prince of the Thieves’ Guild, Remy LeBeau.  It’s not quite hate-on-sight, but their first encounter involves a pack of dobermans, three squad cars, two yard flamingos, and six bags of beads.  He thinks she’s a pretty pest, she thinks he’s a peacock.

Bella Donna thinks it’s hilarious, and when she finds out her grandfather is angling to get her hitched, she tells Darcy that the best way to pay back that favor owed is to take Bella’s place in a contract signing.  She won’t owe anyone anything anymore, and the contract is really more of a formality, it doesn’t bind her to any specific jobs or purchases.

It just binds her to Remy.

You know what I really want rn? Rarepair (or at least not as popular) compilations but for fictional friendships (including rare types of friendships if not specific characters, like introvert/extrovert, crossovers, intergenerational, etc.)

Give me Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jocasta Nu being nerdy library friends together (but still being badasses like in The Mummy).

Give me Darcy Lewis and Stephanie Brown bonding over being the non-genius without years of training who will still go to bat for their found family.

Give me Stiles Stilinski and Five Hargreeves going through things their family wouldn't understand and being way more mature than they look or act.

Give me Remy Lebeau and Kurt Wagner reconciling their shared religious background with their identity as mutants and being each other's support system.

I just really want more fics that focus explicitly on friendships bc not every rarepair has to be romantic, you feel?
