In July I read another set of four books, and the first non action/thriller/suspense book from Tal Bauer. It was good! Bauer’s skills and writing were great, like always. Yet I kept finding after reading more than half of the book, I was missing the action, or the mystery to solve. “Love and Lifeless” should’ve probably been a three star, yet it got four. Don’t ask me what I was thinking😂 it was another ‘I’ve read worse and better books—yet I had a good time reading it’. There was definitely something in the character development that made me a bit confused (like the characters being too similar and suddenly mixing goals etc). So if I ever read it again, it’s going to get a lower score. Lot of four star books this month! “Garron Park” was a fun, easy read book and I’m confused why I didn’t give it a higher score. Yes, it’s been a few weeks since I read it and brain fog makes me forget all the bad parts of it, probably something with the ending that made me give it a lower score. But to compare it to the other four stars books this month, it’s definitely the best one, sorry Bauer. On to the cherry on top, the only five star book for this month! “Freak camp” gives me such Isaac Marion’s “Warm bodies series” meets “Supernatural” vibes. Like it’s difficult not seeing the “Supernatural” inspiration. It was definitely the slowest of slow burn other than “Captive Prince” by C. S. Pacat I’ve read and I’m not mad about it! Finally, I would recommend either “Garron Park” or “Freak Camp” depending on how dark you want it and how many TW’s you wanna read.

The Themes of Medicine Walk
Tumblr media
While Medicine walk covers a wide range of topics and themes such as childhood trauma, alcoholism and war, the theme of death and grief are consistent throughout the novel.
The main plot of the book is Frank assisting his dying father in being buried in a special way, in the warrior position facing the west. Throughout the stories and backstories of the characters we learn about many other deaths, Eldon's friend Jimmy, Eldon's dad, His mother's abuse and the list goes on. The topic of death takes many forms in the novel, we see the consequences of death and even murder and we see death from many different perspectives including indigenous ones.
Indignity and mention of indigenous cultures and tradition are consistent thought out the entire story, they give us new perspectives and allows us to think deeper about the topic of death. We can see in characters like Jimmy and Angie who are more connected to their Indigeneity handle death differently compared to Eldon who knows very little of his native heritage.
These different ideas make the book very interesting to me. Death is something that can not be avoided, it's something every person will go through and experience. Seeing how different interpretations of the afterlife and different healing processes affect each character adds dimension to their personalities. Overall, the theme of death is very fascinating and makes for a real attention-grabbing book. Richard Wagamese has used it to add depth to his characters and make them more interesting and unique.
Eldon in particular is interesting to examine when it comes to the topic of death. When he was little his father died in the war, and then years later he killed his best friend on a similar battlefield. These two very different experiences make up a lot of who Eldon is. This trauma has made him very closed off, we see examples of this countless times throughout the story.
““You could talk to me, you know.” She stood up beside him. She was almost his height and she didn’t have to raise her head to look at him. He could feel the strength of her. He wanted to touch her and his hand trembled at his side a little. He trailed the toe of a boot in the grass.
“Not a real good thing,” he said.
 “Why?”
“Work. That’s what I’m here for.”
“Everybody needs to talk.”
“Everybody needs to work. Seems to me ya can talk yer way outta work real easy. I can’t afford it.”
 “You can’t afford a friend?””
This is a quote from Eldon's past but his attitude towards vulnerability stays consistent until his last few days spent with his son. The combination of his father dying and having to kill his best friend to stop his own death are two very scaring experiences that caused him to drink the way he does. His alcoholism shapes his character throughout the entire book and affects the way others see him, especially frank.
In the same section, we see someone act the opposite way. Angie was able to be vulnerable and took her parent's death in a completely different way than Eldon
““My dad was a working man,” she said.
 “Kind?”
“Everything. He always said he liked the feel of the earth on his hands. So he did outside work mostly.”
“Sounds like a good man.”
“He died when I was twelve. Heart attack. Pretty much worked himself to death.”
“He was Cree?”
“White. My mom was Cree.” “She’s gone too.””
From what I know so far, Angie has handled these deaths in a much more healthy way than Eldon. I like that the author provided so many different perspectives on death, it adds depth to the story as a whole.
Generational trauma also plays a big role in this story. The trauma felt by Eldon and his terrible coping mechanisms have also shaped Franks's personality. Now that Frank knows his father's reactions to death, I wonder how it will affect him when Eldon dies. I still haven't reached Eldon's death but the curiosity of knowing what Frank's reaction will be have not faded only grown.
Overall, this book is dark, but with such an interesting theme I'm able to stay focused while reading, always wondering what will happen next. I've felt my stomach drop multiple times during the reading of this book and I can't wait for the end.
Richard Wagamese has done a great job on this story and I can't wait to read more of his work.

The Sisters by Daisy Johnson
Tumblr media
“This year we are haunted…This the year, as any other, in which we are friendless, necessary only to ourselves”
July and September are sisters born just 10 months apart. Fleeing Oxford due an unknown incident, they move with their mum, Sheela, to The Settle House, an isolated house in the North York Moors “only just out of the sea”.
Adding to the isolation, Sheela, a children’s author, spends most of the novel locked up in her room, bed-bound by an overwhelming depression. The girls are left to their own devices, scrounging meals together from old tins, playing games that are dictated by September and watching documentaries for hours on end.
Throughout the novel, there is a sense of a mundane normality that’s peppered with underlying darkness and abuse. Readers witness July’s heart-breaking vulnerability that September cruelly takes advantage of, disguising her controlling nature in games such as “Simon Says” and in being protective of her sister.
Told mostly from the perspective of July, and sometimes from the third person perspective of Sheela, readers learn the eerie intricacies of the sisters bond and how their odd closeness affects them and how they fit into the world around them. Hints of the reason why they fled are sprinkled throughout the novel  before becoming clear to readers, and July herself, in the end.
I found this book quite a cosy read. This is definitely the sort of book that would be perfect for a rainy day. I loved the sense that, even though the sister’s days were spent alone and weren’t particularly exciting, there was a darkness seeping through that was quite unsettling. To me, Daisy perfectly portrayed the book’s themes of mental illness by suggesting that, even though things may seem normal and uneventful, there could be so much going on beneath the surface.

🏝️🔪The Island🔪🏝️ Happy Pub Day! My jaw hit the floor when I opened this book mail Friday afternoon! This was a fast paced 5 ⭐ read for me! I read it in 24 hours and it’s out today! 🔪🏃‍♀️ SYNPOSIS: IT WAS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE A FAMILY VACATION. A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT CHANGED EVERYTHING. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE CAPABLE OF UNTIL THEY COME FOR YOUR FAMILY. After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry, taking a chance on an adventure far from the reach of iPhones and Instagram. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong. Then a shocking accident propels the Baxters from an unsettling situation into an absolute nightmare. When Heather and the kids are separated from Tom, they are forced to escape alone, seconds ahead of their pursuers. Now it’s up to Heather to save herself and the kids, even though they don’t trust her, the harsh bushland is filled with danger, and the locals want her dead. Heather has been underestimated her entire life, but she knows that only she can bring her family home again and become the mother the children desperately need, even if it means doing the unthinkable to keep them all alive.
