How to get to the Lighthouse in Daugavgrīva
Tumblr media
One reader recently asked for clearer instructions on how to get to Daugavgrīvas baka, the lighthouse that we visited in our post about Daugavgrīva. Although it’s not as hard at you might imagine, it’s definitely not the easiest place to navigate to since there is no direct road, and even if you get there by car it will still involve a significant amount of walking. That being said, this destination is one of the most worthwhile free places to visit in all of Rīga, and if you’re feeling a bit adventurous it’s worth a visit.
This guide assumes that you’re getting there by public transit (bus). If you’re lucky enough to be traveling by car then you can plug these coordinates into your car’s GPS and skip right to the third step.
Step 1:
Take the #3 bus from the center to the “Daugavgrīvas cietoksnis” (Daugavgriva’s fortress) stop.

Step 2:
Walk down Flotes iela, passing Latvijas Jūras akadēmija and a few wood processing factories on the right. Follow the road until the second turn off on the left with graffiti that reads “UZ JŪRU” (”TO THE SEA”). Take that left, and follow the road until you see a small parking area.

Step 3:
Follow the path and walk or bike towards the sea. You will pass some small ponds and a marshy, grassy area.

Step 4:
When you get to the sea, turn right. Keep walking along the beach about two kilometers until you reach the lighthouse. For a while you will need to walk along a fairly steep sea wall, so you will want to use caution during icier months as I have seen someone slip into the sea in front of me before (they were fine). As a general rule, stay as far away from the edge of the wall as possible. This part luckily only lasts a hundred meters or so.

Step 5:
You did it! You’re at the lighthouse! If you’re feeling adventurous, you can continue onto the breakwater to the left of the lighthouse, but you will have to get there by walking on the top of a fairly narrow and steep wall. Also depending on the sea swell and the time of year, it might not be possible to go all the way to the end of the breakwater.

I hope that helps clear things up a bit! If you visit on a Saturday or Sunday, make sure to check out the fortress near the bus stop that I mentioned earlier. Laimīgu ceļu! :-)

Hello, my name is Sofia and i work in a tour operator in London, organizing group travels for people all over Europe. I have a group of lighthouse fans visiting Latvia, and they want to visit the lighthouse in Daugavgriva. Would it be possible for me to e-mail you so you can give me some more information on how you accessed the lighthouse?Thank you!
Hi Sofia! I’d rather not give out my email publicly, but for you and others who might be interested, I just posted a simple guide that gives step by step instructions on how to get to Daugavgrīvas baka (the lighthouse).  If you and your group visit on a Saturday or Sunday, make sure to check out the fortress near the bus stop that I mentioned in my post about Daugavgrīva. Laimīgu ceļu! :-)
