Cordelia Botkin: Death by Chocolate
Tumblr media
October 18, 2021
Cordelia Botkin was born in 1854 in Missouri and had moved to California with her family where she married her husband, a man named Welcome Botkin. The pair had one son together.
In 1895 (some sources say 1892), Cordelia had met a man named John Preston Dunning, a reported for the Associated Press, who had been promoted to the superintendent for the Western Division in San Francisco. Cordelia was 41 years old at the time, and had been 9 years older than John. Despite this, and despite them both being married at the time, it was said that John became smitten with Cordelia.
In 1896, John’s wife, a woman named Mary Elizabeth Dunning, had found out about John’s affair with Cordelia and had moved with their daughter to Dover, Delaware to live with her father, a former Congressman. Cordelia had been estranged from her husband, though he would still send her money to support her. John soon lost his job when he had embezzled $4,000 in office funds to pay for his gambling problem. He was also a heavy drinker and after losing his job, he ended up moving into the same hotel as Cordelia. One day, John had mentioned to Cordelia that his wife loved candy and that she had a friend named Mrs. Corbaley from San Francisco.
Cordelia and John’s affair lasted for three or six years, and ended in March of 1898 when he was rehired as the agency’s lead reporter for what would become the Spanish-American War. Cordelia was extremely upset by this and John told her he was leaving San Francisco and would not be returning. To make matters worse, he reconnected with his wife before leaving for Cuba.
Cordelia began to send anonymous letters to John’s wife, Elizabeth, telling her of her husband’s affairs. On August 9 (some sources saying September 9, 1898, Elizabeth had received a box of chocolate bonbons that were addressed to her and her sister in Delaware. There was a note that came with the candy reading, “With love to yourself and baby. Mrs. C.”
Elizabeth had taken at least three pieces of the candy for herself and shared the rest with her sister, her daughter, her niece and two neighbours. Elizabeth had believed that the candy was from her good friend, Mrs. Corbaley and had no hesitation about eating them. Hours after eating the chocolates, everyone felt sick and began vomiting in pain. A doctor came to examine them and declared that they had cholera morbus, which was due to lack of refrigeration. The doctor suggested it was the corn fritters they had eaten for dinner, but the two neighbours that had ate chocolates were sick, but had not eaten the corn fritters.
After two days of being in pain, Elizabeth who was 35, and her older sister, Ida Harriet Deane, who was 44 at the time, both died from arsenic poisoning. Four other people who had been present when the candy arrived and had eaten some survived. Many believe that the others survived because they only had one piece of candy, while Elizabeth and her sister both had multiple.
Elizabeth’s father noted that the note on the candy had the same handwriting as the taunting letters he had kept in a drawer from before. Her father also believed his daughters had been poisoned from the start, and had a chemist examine a piece of the chocolate, to which they found traces of arsenic. Elizabeth’s father contacted John and told him that his wife had died, and upon arriving, John was shown the letters that had been sent to Elizabeth to which he immediately recognized Cordelia’s handwriting. Police traced the candy to a shop in San Francisco which eventually led them to Cordelia.
Cordelia had taken the stand and admitted that she had bought arsenic in June 1898, but the kind she bought was powdered and the kind found in the candy was crystalline. She said she had boughten the arsenic to bleach a straw hat and provided alibis that she had not purchased the candy and had not mailed the package, though both of these could not be verified.
She was then convicted of murder on December 31,1898, after the jury deliberated for 4 hours, but appealed it, and was then convicted at a second trial, on April 30, 1904 (or August 2, 1904). She was sentenced to life imprisonment and one Sunday a few weeks after her sentencing, Judge Cook saw Cordelia shopping downtown. It was later found out that she had exchanged sexual favours to be treated better in jail and to leave prison grounds. She eventually went to San Quentin State Prison, where she died on March 7, 1910 at 56 years old. Her official cause of death was softening of the brain due to melancholy. John Dunning’s reputation had been destroyed over this, and he died two years before Cordelia in 1908.

The Death
Tumblr media
Dear Clique, Today I’m talking about “Death”. Actually, this should be an article series, If I could I will bring this as an article series.
So why I selected Death. Very simple. Because death is the only thing that we all can experience. Drive a Roll Royce car, spending a night at a five-star hotel those are rare chances only a limited population can experience. But if you like it or not you have to experience death.
How much we like to the Birth we celebrate our Birthday in every year. My opinion is the Death is important as well as Birth.
What are the most significant features of the Death? The first one is it is compulsory. The second one is anyone doesn’t know when it is happening and how it can happen. My opinion is being aware the Death is very good and you will face even your life’s end successfully.
So what we can do about it? When we are associating people just think this is the last moment I spend always try to be friendly with everyone. Love everyone hates nobody. And always do things for the world. According to my point of view, we are coming to the world to serve people, to make the world a better place for the next generations. So don’t be late always do something to make the world a better place.
Don’t try to collect so much money. (It needs some deposit money for your essentials but here I’m mentioning an extremely savers. ) First, spend for yourself. Buy things you love. Treat your family well. Treat well for your loved ones. Why did I mention ourselves first?
There is a reason for it. I’m explaining with my personal experiences which I have. I think you may probably have experiences like that. There is some kind of people. They don’t spend money even for themselves.
After spending for you do for others. Help people, animals any kind of living beings which need help. Then you may ask me what about life goals? Should we give up our life goals because our life is uncertain? No, I never say that. So I will meet you from tomorrow’s Day Post explaining how we can chase goals as dying people. Stay Tuned! See you tomorrow.
