Yes, Pearl and Marina decimated Frye and Shiver in that rap battle—and yes, Marina recognized what was going on and knew what Shiver was doing and played accordingly. She is 23 years old and, as Pearl said, has a big mind—she knew she was in a rap battle, and Shiver getting increasingly irritated to the point of trying to end it with Marina giving the classic sassy "I can do this all night" proves it.
But I digress.
Yes, Off the Hook won that battle handily. But that doesn't mean that Shiver and Frye are bad at what they do.
It just shows their inexperience.
Compared to Squid Sisters and Off the Hook, Deep Cut is pretty much still an indie band. They're really only known within the Splatlands, and only reached the level of fame needed to take over Anarchy Splatcast a couple years before Splatoon 3. And that's fine, I'm not dissing them—but it means that they don't really know what it is to work within the broader music industry as a whole, or go up against musicians who have experience working on a world stage. Shiver and Frye feel threatened by Off the Hook performing in Splatsville because they feel as though Off the Hook could replace them, despite the fact that Off the Hook is famous enough to have done a world tour and this is a single drop in the bucket to them. Not to mention, Pearl has close to a decade of experience as a musician by now. Frye does not. So for Frye to step to her . . . no wonder she got stomped. This isn't Pearl's first rap battle and it won't be her last.
Of course, not all the members of Deep Cut show this inexperience. Big Man knows there is a lot to be learned from seniors in the music industry, as shown by his collab with Squid Sisters and how he was "awestruck" by Off the Hook and didn't participate in Shiver and Frye's confrontation.
But Shiver and Frye's inexperience IS showing here. They have so much skill and talent! But if they want to go beyond Splatsville, they need to grow up a bit and not pointlessly pick fights with those who could help them. Picking a fight with Off the Hook in particular is silly af, because they LOVE collabing with less known artists to give them a boost, as seen with their Damp Socks collab. This didn't have to happen at all, but Shiver and Frye picked a fight, Pearl and Marina finished it, and, well. They got served the dish they asked for.
(But in the end it was still a collab, so maybe it'll still help in a roundabout way.)

Not to be That Guy but like.
Am I the only one that can't stop thinking about how Tianlang-Jun says about Luo Binghe that he pretends to be cold-hearted like his mother. The hint of fondness there, the heartache in that utterance.
Like it drives me absolutely insane. Imagining her putting on a front of strength, cold and driven and unrelenting. Why does TLJ say that about her. Did she secretly look for solutions that meant reconciling with demons instead of hurting them when her sect wasn't looking? (I wonder this because I feel like his weird fondness for SQQ would lowkey track if it's connected to the woman he once loved.) Did he mean that she was tasked with basically assassinating him and she fell in love with him instead (re: failed step one)? Did he mean that she was fond and doting in her own way (e.g. conceding he was attractive, paying for his exploits and humoring him)? Did he mean that, like LBH, she thought that power would be the thing to protect her--and that it was disguising a person who was deeply and privately wounded? All four????? I don't need sleep I need a n s w e r s
Did she know about the Huanhua Palace Master's skeevy ass intentions before she met TLJ? Or did those only come to significant light after she fell in love with TLJ? Is that why she never anticipated that level of betrayal, because initially she had no intention of being with anyone romantically? And HHPM just assumed she would be under his thumb forever?? Was she furious at her own indiscretion or did she try to use the pregnancy as a bargaining chip, a way to try to stop the immortals of Cang Qiong Mountain from attacking TLJ (plus the bonus of marriage entrapment no takesies backsies this is where LBH gets it from)? Did she try to use that claim on her to dissuade HHPM from his covetous advances, framing herself as tainted so that she could finally escape? Did she dream of a life by TLJ's side, far away from Cang Qiong Mountain?
Like. Literally every single permutation of what this could mean guts me to hell. Do you ever just cry about tianxi because I--[loud bawling noises]

obviously its all bad but the one plagiarism somerton did that i rly cant get over is taking the words of a trans!! and asian!!!!!!! writer (jes tom), who was writing personally about their thoughts on Mulan and how they very personally connected to the story, and removing any mention of race so that he (white) could say it as if it was his words. and not only that he makes it generally about queerness rather than (asian, specifically) transmasculinity . truly rancid

I GOT IDEA ☝️🤠‼️‼️
I think that Wolfwood has strong hands not only in the sense of strength but also in resistance, so when he punches or smacks Vash on his prosthetic he doesn’t really feel too affected by punching the hard material and barely notices it like yeah it’s harder than flesh but it’s whatevs
In addition to that, he has found that with Vash he doesn’t measure his strength a lot so sometimes he hits him a tad too hard
So to expand my panicked “oh shit sorry” eldest sibling Wolfwood response agenda when he accidentally fucks up, sometimes he will smack Vash’s left arm playfully and Vash will hiss in pain or act a little too real (not so exaggerated) when he gets the hit, and indulges in the way WW is all oh no oh fuck sorry uh did it really hurt that bad while Vash is doubling over in pain when he’s actually pressing down a laugh
It always takes Wolfwood a little too long to realize it’s not his actual arm and when he does come to realize it, he gets embarrassed but the violent kind of embarrassed and he hits him so hard Vash always considers not doing it again
He does it again at least once a week, and Wolfwood somehow falls for it every single time and the beatings get worse than the one before that

longtime dc fan and i think a lot of people are angry because alex is obviously one of the most culturally relevant instances of misogyny in media. that being said being more culturally relevant doesn’t mean it’s the worst instance of misogyny and i think bumble definitely experiences more profound misogyny in the way the actual content is presented, if that makes sense
I get you, and that's a charitable way of looking at it.
I think what's rustling my jimmies is that like, there was a couple of WC fans being mildly dismissive of Alex in that note minefield, after dozens of comments of "fuck you how could you let the fridge woman lose" and "Bumble didn't deserve to win ANY rounds" and "how could A CAT experience misogyny." But then WE get blamed for the toxicity because THEY were butthurt that the Funny Cat People have the 'audacity' to win something they feel entitled to.
Like, we've gotta be endlessly charitable as we get openly insulted because they're upset about Alex losing, a very well-known and culturally relevant character with a legacy so massive we have a whole term named after her. But condemnations of "She's just a cat, letting WC into this poll was a mistake, Bumble can't even be a victim of misogyny" only started coming around once I started talking about it.
as if it's OUR fault people got passive-aggressive or even OPENLY aggressive towards us, and that we're "just as bad" for retaliating
But like you said, it's not a "Most Culturally Relevant Misogyny" tournament, it's a "Canon Misogyny Victims" tournament. And you're not even supposed to give a shit that Bumble died. The fat, woman abuse victim is beaten to death by a dictator, and your takeaway is meant to be, "It's so sad that Clear Sky is being blamed for murdering her, now they're all preparing for self-defense against a homicidal maniac, oh nooo :("
And I think that DOES make her deserve the win here! Alex is a MARTYR. Everyone with a brain agrees what happens to her is bad. It happened in her canon because it was bad. We talk about her and keep her memory alive. Bumble gets dismissed entirely out of hand because she's "just a cat in a kid's book" as if that doesn't make it worse, and as if the kid's book didn't treat a domestic abuse survivor like a moron for even asking for help.
Anyway, just to reiterate, I love DC fans. It's not all of you guys. Alex was done dirty and deserves justice-- and it's even kind of a shame that all she became is "The Fridge Woman." I haven't even heard people talk about how she was a wary, responsible person who was still ready to rock with Kyle's new weird glowstick powers, or that she was a journalist, or that she just got brought back in another edition as a Green Lantern only to be revealed as an illusion and re-absorbed back into Kyle's mind. Nope. Even her fans just remember her as The Fridge Woman.

Once again, I am begging people to start questioning the actions of Star Wars writers and executives.
Why is the “greedy, resource hogger” character a fat, disabled man?
Why is the Black man the “violent terrorist whose impacts are useless except to harm others?”
Why are the main characters whitewashed?
Why is the autistic man killed after his disability was finally acknowledged?
Why does the woman die of no reason other than apparent sadness?
Why?

Ppl will say fanon v canon doesn’t matter and it’s all jokes and I’m sooooo close to going sure sometimes and then I remember y’all removed a major role of one of the if not THEE most prominent black character in Bruce’s story who was created a whole decade before tim and gave it to tim based off a run where he literally handed the role back! Like IN THE COMIC Tim was CEO in name only and handed it back to Lucius relieved when he didn’t need to front anymore like.

the way that Marius just constantly denies himself the luxury of expressing his emotions!! The way he's decided that anger is undignified so he cannot act in anger! The way he's decided that jealousy is immature so he will not let anyone know he's jealous! The way we all participate in society by learning proper channels to express hard emotions and he never has that, he just buries all of it deep deep deep until he explodes because these feelings never go away!
Feelings are always valid even when bad behavior isn't; all people must develop that buffer to know where to put big feelings, and learn how not to take them out on the wrong people, but the feelings don't just go away if you ignore them!
And someone like Marius, who had the burden of The Parents, with this overbearing weight of pressure that he cannot be like the one before him, he cannot snap and decide to end it all! And the irony that only the few people closest to him know about it, and he can't be honest with them either because it's the MOST important for THOSE people not to think he's a mess that could snap and end it all.
Anyway the way it grinds your soul down when you try to obsessively carve out a way to behave, a way to be perceived, the way you can modify your own behavior to be agreeable to others at the expense of your own hurt, the way you sit with your own pain because you don't think anyone else should be responsible for it, even though sometimes they are!!!
