Cali Ch F: Federico Delbonis [6] def. Guido Andreozzi [8] 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Delbonis' tightness might have been felt at the end of the second set, where Andreozzi saved 4 of his match points. However, Delbonis pressed Andreozzi back from the baseline, setting himself off at the start of the third set before breaking for the match thanks to a forehand winner. This showed how the slightest differential mattered in this match, which explained how Delbonis' shot winners resulted in 9 opportunities to break, with 4 conversions spread in all three sets.
Speaking of tightness, they came not only in the return game where Andreozzi's service games came through the rescue. One of Delbonis' saves came from either a double fault or an error, while Andreozzi double-faulted once for Delbonis' fourth match point only to be responded with a forehand rush. Interestingly, despite firing 9 more aces than Andreozzi, Delbonis still won 2% lesser points from his first serves, while Andreozzi could only win 55% of his points from his second serves, with some shot rushes and his 5 double faults waning his percentage.
This title marked Delbonis' first Challenger title since the Perugia Challenger 2019 held in July that year (almost 4 years!), propelling himself back 5 lines away to the Top 200 per the current state of the live rankings. On the other hand, Andreozzi also put himself closer to the Top 250, which strengthened his singles comeback. Both of them will play in Medellin Challenger next week, so should be interesting to see the continuation of their comeback journeys.

🔄 Hamburg Open '19 Recap
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the draw now released, Alexander will begin his run in Hamburg tomorrow, so here is a look back at the last time he played the tournament, four years ago.
Alexander opened his campaign with a solid 6-4 6-2 win over Chilean Jarry. In the next round, he met Delbonis, who he was also able to defeat in straight sets, 6-4 7-6 (7-2) to advance to the quarter-finals. Alexander's quarter-final opponent was Krajinović, and this match proved to be the most difficult yet, with Alexander dropping the first set 6-2, the first set he had dropped all tournament. But he did not give in, winning the second set 7-5, to force a decider. It was in this final set that Alexander raised his level even further, commanding play to claim the final set 6-2 and move into the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, Alexander met Basilashvili, and sadly, with his serve not firing as it had in prior matches, this was Alexander's last match in Hamburg. Like the previous round, Alexander dropped the first set, this time 6-4, before striking back to claim the second set 6-4. The final set was quite the roller-coaster, with both players exchanging service breaks, eventually culminating in a final tie-break. Sadly, it went Basilashvili's way 7-5, ending Alexander's run in his home tournament.
Hopefully Alexander will have a good run in his home tournament this year; it's extra special with it being not only in his home country, but his home city too. Auf geht's, Alexander 🔥

🎥 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
The third set somehow boiled down to how it was set up and finished. Somehow, Andreozzi's backhand error, which the ball ended up being stuck at the net, resulted in Delbonis' early break to 1-0, and he did not look back since thanks to staying stable in his service games.
Somehow, Delbonis took advantage of Andreozzi's service game in the ninth game of the match after several consecutive holds. After Andreozzi's shots went too wide, which one of them ended up being Delbonis' match point, the latter finished the match with a forehand winner (6-3), finally hoisting a trophy for the first time since July 2019, specifically in Perugia Challenger.
