Shakespeare Weekend

This weekend we look at Shakespeare’s tragic comedy, Troilus and Cressida the thirty-fourth volume of the thirty-seven volume The Comedies Histories & Tragedies of William Shakespeare, published by the Limited Editions Club (LEC) from 1939-1940. Troilus and Cressida was written in 1602 and according to the Stationer’s Register performed publicly by the Chamberlain's Men shortly thereafter. It was published in quarto twice in 1609 and included in the First Folio in 1623. Historians have noted the play’s tone bounces between tragedy and comedy in an often confounding way and some critics have argued the play be classified as a “Problem Play” in that it is centered around social and political problems but offers no resolution to them.

LEC's edition of Troilus and Cressida was illustrated by Greek artist Demetrius Galanis (1879-1966). Galanis was a successful early twentieth-century artist, friend of Picasso, and contemporary of other prominent art figures including Matisse, Braque, and Chagall. Although he was an established painter, Galanis illustrated Troilus and Cressida with evocative wood engravings, the compositions of which recall ancient Greek vases. The images were printed in black on a terracotta background by Dehon et Cie in Paris, creating stunning high-contrast illustrations that capture the action of the play.

The volume was printed in an edition of 1950 copies at the Press of A. Colish. Each of the LEC volumes of Shakespeare’s works are illustrated by a different artist, but the unifying factor is that all volumes were designed by famed book and type designer Bruce Rogers and edited by the British theatre professional and Shakespeare specialist Herbert Farjeon. Our copy is number 1113, the number for long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

There seems to have been a change in how A Midsummer Night's Dream is talked about now than how it was when I read the play in high school.

Namely about Helena and Demetrius.

Back then, the commentaries I read were sympathetic to Helena. "She's the most human of the four young lovers." "Every woman can relate to her because we've all experienced unrequited love and low self-esteem." "She defies gender expectations by actively pursuing her man, and Shakespeare rewards her for it." Meanwhile, they were much less sympathetic to Demetrius, citing the fact that he abandoned Helena before the start of the play and the verbal abuse and threats of violence he hurls at her until he's enchanted to love her again. The main concern about their ending was "What if the love juice wears off someday? What will happen to Helena then?"

But nowadays, concerns about consent seem to have flipped the narrative. People seem more inclined to view Helena as an obsessed stalker and Demetrius as her victim. The concern about their marriage is less "Helena ends up with the man who once abandoned and emotionally abused her," than "Demetrius has his ability to consent taken away and ends up with a bride he didn't want until he was enchanted."

Although maybe that change isn't so widespread in bigger circles of literary criticism. It might just be among amateur critics here and there on the Internet.

Has anyone else who studies Shakespeare noticed this change in the commentary about these two characters?

Saw a production of Midsummer Night’s Dream where Lysander was played by a butch lesbian and Helena was a gay man and

1) never has Helena’s spaniel plea been delivered with such raw horniness:

Helena: And even for that do I love you the more. I am your spaniel; and, Demetrius, The more you beat me, I will fawn on you: Use me but as your spaniel, spurn me, strike me, Neglect me, lose me; only give me leave, Unworthy as I am, to follow you.

and 2) I need you to imagine the face that butch Lysander gave her lover when Egeus refers to her as ‘This Man’

Egeus: Stand forth, Lysander. – And my gracious duke, This man hath bewitch’d the bosom of my child. – Thou, thou, Lysander.

You didn’t really care what the baby was as long as they were healthy but you were lowkey wishing for a girl. “ Y/N I’m truly excited for you to join the mommy club. The last one in our group to have a baby. You and Riri will be amazing mommies. “- Laila smiled

“ Listen i can feel it in my bones she’s a girl. Lets go get changed so we can get this reveal started “- Riri smirked

You opted on wearing an all white dress because you could not decide on what to wear and this dress was one of the only things you could fit in at the moment. Riri of course wore something pink. She decided on a pink t-shirt and a pair of white jeans.

“ My baby mama so sexy. “- Riri grinned as she came behind you and wrapped her arms around your stomach.

“You’re going be the best mom ever, lil bean will love you so much, and I really hope they come out with your beautiful smile and your kind heart .” - Riri smiled as she kissed your cheek.

Grace being a middle name passed down from my family’s generation and Williams being our last name. If he’s a boy his name will be Cairo Demetrius Williams. Cairo meaning “victorious one”. Demetrius is the name of Riris father and again Williams being our last name. Now let’s seeing what the Williams are having, I’m going to need you guys to count down for us. “ - You smiled
