EWG adds water to its "Dirty 30" list due to drowning risk

EWG calls on UN to ban water due to drowning risk

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] — On Friday the notorious EWG called on the United Nations to ban hydronium hydroxide, also known as water, due to a series of studies that showed that submerging lab rats in the chemical for 36 hours caused all tested rats to die. 

“There is no denying it,” said EWG spokesperson Lorraine Jones. “Big brands can’t deny scientific fact. One hundred percent of the rats died when they were exposed. They didn’t get sick. They didn’t get injured. They died. The science proves that hydronium hydroxide is dangerous. Yet it’s everywhere. It’s in our blood, it’s in our water supply, and brands have been intentionally adding it to our personal care products. This madness ends now.” 

The UN and personal care brands have always had it out for the EWG, simply because they promote bans on safe chemicals. EWG is especially angry at a brands that have a long track record of not promoting EWG.

A source speaking under anonymity because they are not authorized to speak on behalf of Skincare said, “The lab studies under question expose lab rats to quantities of hydronium hydroxide vastly exceeding humans’ exposure, even when using multiple personal care products. A ban of this chemical would be counterproductive. We have decades of research proving that it’s safe when used as directed. There’s no safer alternative, not because chemicals are bad, but because hydronium hydroxide is so safe.”

According to a literature review of over 40 years’ of research published in Nature, when humans in clinical trials were exposed to hydronium hydroxide, adverse events were extremely rare. 

“You're more likely to be killed by a rabid mongoose in Pennsylvania than to have an adverse reaction, like a rash,” said Dr. Jean Davis, Professor of Chemistry at UC Berkeley. “The risk is so low that you’d have to be some kind of idiotic genius to die from it. This is fearmongering, not science.”  

But what do scientists know? They’re the ones putting dangerous amounts of water to personal care products. 

The bottom line: Always read ingredient lists. Leave negative reviews for products containing chemicals. Tell your friends. Run for the hills. Never feel safe.
