If you've ever wondered why people in Hawai'i hate tourists, try to wrap your mind around the fact that there are CURRENTLY, RIGHT NOW, tourists sipping martinis and looking at fish within swimming range of the fresh corpses of local people who couldn't escape the overnight destruction of their entire town.
Try to comprehend that there are fully functional, high capacity boats passing through the waters in front of an area full of survivors who are stranded and in need of supplies, refusing to help. They are hosting snorkeling tours.
Really think about, try your best to actually picture over two thousand people unhoused and in need of shelter, with nothing but the clothes on their backs and nothing to return to. Understand that the island, stolen land, is littered with hotels full of air conditioned of rooms with beds and showers and toilets, each fully equipped to host hundreds of families for weeks, turning these people away because they're booked up with tourists who refuse to leave.
And understand that these tourists were offered free transport to return home or be hosted on other islands. Free. Courtesy of local tax dollars. 4,000 wealthy tourists were offered free flights shelter on Oahu and begged to leave the island, BEFORE the survivors were given shelter.
And enough still insisted on remaining and carrying out their vacations that people are left without shelter and resources while they enjoy "their stay in paradise".
[Edit]: This current situation, and this type of tourist behavior is horrifying beyond words. In other circumstances, the tourism situation is much more complicated, and I need to ask that people do not add on to this post unless they are local.

Where you can donate to help Maui, Hawaii
this article has places listed that you can donate to, but i’ll also put direct links to some of these places in this post:
Maui United Way
Maui Strong Fund
Maui Food Bank
Maui Humane Society
my family is based in Oahu, but i consider all the islands my home even though i physically haven’t stepped foot on them before. seeing all the homes and history and memories being lost in this hurts.
if you are unable to donate, don’t feel guilty—doing things like spreading the word and making people aware of the situation helps as well. thank you for whatever you can do! mahalo
UPDATE: removed Maui Mutual Aid Fund for now because upon further research using the charity checking sites provided by this gov site, it doesn’t appear in results unlike the others listed. so i advise caution for now if you decide to donate there! they may still be legitimate, but i want to exercise caution.

I’m very tired. you probably heard that Russia destroyed the Kakhovka Dam to slow Ukraine’s counter offensive. here’s something I didn’t quite realize: since this February, the Russians operated the dam in juuuuust the right way so that as much water would build up as possible when the snow melted and spring showers started. and then they blew the whole thing up.
40,000 people may need to be evacuated. I don’t really have the energy to say anything else right now.
Hospitallers Medical Battalion: actual angels can confirm. they’re combat-zone medical services - you know how humanitarian groups like MFS and Red Cross have to pause operations due to the Russians fucking shooting at humanitarian zones? yeah, these guys don’t pause for bullets, they fucking walk into them and they bring out anyone they can.
Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation: you can choose from a number of various fundraiser projects here, if you’re feeling particularly picky. for those of you who balk at the idea of supporting anything military just please remember that things like vehicles and drones aren’t just for military use, they’re also for evacuation and finding the wounded and they’re fucking vital.
KSE Foundation: similar to the above, KSE has multiple projects you can choose from to donate to. looking at it right now, one of the projects with the lowest amounts of money raised thus far - despite being started in April - is Seeds for Ukraine, which will help Ukraine recover from the ecological devastation Russia has been wreaking (and with Ukraine, the countries that rely on Ukraine’s grain exports that Russia keeps trying to steal).
Come Back Alive: do these guys even need the introduction? they’re Come Back Alive. I’m kissing all of them.
United24: Zelenskyy’s brain child, and the official fundraising platform of Ukraine. Mark Hamill recommends the fundraisers for drones in particular.
UAnimals: Nova Kakhovka’s zoo got... pretty much completely swept away. all zoo residents except the birds have drowned. UAnimals has tried throughout the occupation to keep the animals safe, and they’ve been reporting on the status of the zoo. I don’t really know what to say except that I hope they’re able to save the pets and strays in the towns along the river.
You can find NGOs specific to evacuation efforts in this post; please signal boost it as well. I’ve listed them but am leaving the links for the op post.

Hawaii is not a trend. Support needs to be continuous.
There are more ways to help than just donations. Listen to locals, share their stories and support them directly.
Please support them directly.
Hawaii's history is full of the government, military, and U.S. investors betraying Hawaii's trust and desecrating our culture. TMT and Red Hill (Navy poisons drinking water) are just recent examples.
Another reason you should support locals directly is because some organizations like Red Cross have been treating locals like shit. Generally being uncaring or just standing around acting like security guards.
Tumblr media
‘Āina Momona is a great place to look for direct donations to local organizations or families effected by the fires.

Support Maui, Hawai'i Residents During the Lahaina Wildfire Crisis
A series of wildfires exacerbated by hurricane winds and climate change has destroyed homes, historical sites, and natural flora in Lahaina, Maui. Thousands have been displaced, and lives have been lost.
WWC's mod Ren has put together a page outlining resources for residents displaced and affected by the wildfires, and for those who wish to support them during this crisis.
Please share this resource and consider donating, especially if you are not local to Hawai'i and have visited or are considering visiting the islands.
Find a list of orgs to donate to HERE
Our hearts are with Maui residents during this tremendous loss.

Aotearoa NZ is currently in a state of emergency - the last few weeks have been flash flooding in the north island, followed by cyclone gabrielle hitting and causing widespread damage. we have also experienced a 6.3 mag earthquake last night and frankly, we still don't know what infastructure damage has been done by that on top on everything.
there have been multiple fatalities and many people are unaccounted for. thousands of people are cut off and uncontactable. many more are currently homelesses and have had everything destroyed in the flooding.
i've attached a few orgs below that are providing emergency services and have received less public visibility.
Orange Sky provides clean laundry and warm showers to those experiencing homelessness, and has currently expanded to cover those left displaced by flooding and damage - you can donate here
Fairfood in Avondale Auckland is distributing meals - donations can be made here
Give A Kid A Blanket is providing blankets and duvets, as well as baby supplies - donations can be made here
HUHA is providing emergency response (rounding up and providing veterinary care) to pets and other animals caught in the flooding and damage - they can be donated to here
if any other orgs pop up, i'll add them to this post. if any kiwis are in dire conditions and need support, feel free to tack onto this post.

not really sure how to start this but in the past few days maui has been devastated by wildfires caused by a dry summer and the high winds of a passing hurricane. over 1000+ structures, homes, and small businesses belonging to kamaʻāina have been lost. 1,300 people are still missing and at least 99 people have died, making this the deadliest wildfire in the US in over a century.
many people who have evacuated have lost everything, and are left with only the clothes on their backs, so every little bit helps. please keep sharing news and encourage others to help where they can.
if you can, please consider donating to organizations like the Maui Strong Fund, Maui United Way, Maui Humaine Society, which are all operated locally here in Hawaiʻi.
sharing some recent images that have come out in the aftermath, since it's hard to understand the scope of devastation these types of disasters bring, especially for our small islands so far away from the mainland.

"The U.S. government is entering a new era of collaboration with Native American and Alaska Native leaders in managing public lands and other resources, with top federal officials saying that incorporating more Indigenous knowledge into decision-making can help spur conservation and combat climate change.
Federal emergency managers on Thursday also announced updates to recovery policies to aid tribal communities in the repair or rebuilding of traditional homes or ceremonial buildings after a series of wildfires, floods and other disasters around the country.
With hundreds of tribal leaders gathering in Washington this week for an annual summit, the Biden administration is celebrating nearly 200 new agreements that are designed to boost federal cooperation with tribes nationwide.
The agreements cover everything from fishery restoration projects in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest to management of new national monuments in the Southwestern U.S., seed collection work in Montana and plant restoration in the Great Smoky Mountains.
“The United States manages hundreds of millions of acres of what we call federal public lands. Why wouldn’t we want added capacity, added expertise, millennia of knowledge and understanding of how to manage those lands?” U.S. Interior Assistant Secretary Bryan Newland said during a panel discussion.
The new co-management and co-stewardship agreements announced this week mark a tenfold increase over what had been inked just a year earlier, and officials said more are in the pipeline.
Newland, a citizen of the Bay Mills Indian Community in northern Michigan, said each agreement is unique. He said each arrangement is tailored to a tribe’s needs and capacity for helping to manage public lands — and at the very least assures their presence at the table when decisions are made.
The federal government is not looking to dictate to tribal leaders what a partnership should look like, he said...
The U.S. government controls more than a quarter of the land in the United States, with much of that encompassing the ancestral homelands of federally recognized tribes...
Tribes and advocacy groups have been pushing for arrangements that go beyond the consultation requirements mandated by federal law.
Researchers at the University of Washington and legal experts with the Native American Rights Fund have put together a new clearinghouse on the topic. They point out that public lands now central to the country’s national heritage originated from the dispossession and displacement of Indigenous people and that co-management could present on opportunity for the U.S. to reckon with that complicated legacy...
In an attempt to address complaints about chronic underfunding across Indian Country, President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed an executive order on the first day of the summit that will make it easier for tribes to find and access grants.
Deanne Criswell, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told tribal leaders Thursday that her agency [FEMA] began work this year to upgrade its disaster guidance particularly in response to tribal needs.
The Indigenous people of Hawaii have increasingly been under siege from disasters, most recently a devastating fire that killed dozens of people and leveled an entire town. Just last month, another blaze scorched a stretch of irreplaceable rainforest on Oahu.
Tribes in California and Oregon also were forced to seek disaster declarations earlier this year after severe storms resulted in flooding and mudslides...
Criswell said the new guidance includes a pathway for Native American, Alaska Native and Hawaiian communities to request presidential disaster declarations, providing them with access to emergency federal relief funding. [Note: This alone is potentially a huge deal. A presidential disaster declaration unlocks literally millions of dollars in federal aid and does a lot to speed up the response.]
The agency also is now accepting tribal self-certified damage assessments and cost estimates for restoring ceremonial buildings or traditional homes, while not requiring site inspections, maps or other details that might compromise culturally sensitive data."

Hey y'all,
We are seeing an increasing number of house fires this year, and almost all of them are in older homes which haven't had the electricity updated, or in mobile homes. Regardless of the type of home you live in, there are precautions you can take to prevent losing everything.
Please take the time to check your home for fire hazards.
Replace furnace filters on time. Check them regularly.
Get a fire extinguisher and a grease fire extinguisher. Most fires start in the kitchen.
Check the batteries on your smoke detectors. If you do not have a smoke detector, contact your local American Red Cross office and set up a FREE install.
If you have pre-1980 wiring in your home, make sure it isn't overloaded by electronics. Unplug things you don't use regularly.
All heaters need space. Keep pets, kids, and flammable items at least 3 feet away from heating equipment (including paper, matches, bedding, furniture, clothing, carpets, rugs, etc.).
Never leave a fire unattended. This includes fireplaces, outdoor grills, outdoor fire pits, and candles.
I know I did this when I lived in a slum, but please don't ever use a stove or an oven to heat your home. It also increases the chances of injury to yourself, your pets, and your children.
And I know this sucks, but don't leave a portable space heater on when you leave the house OR when you sleep. Waking up to a fire lowers your chance of survival.
If your power goes out, try to use flashlights instead of candles. If you have to use candles, use smaller ones like tealights with a 2-hour flame and keep them a minimum of 2 feet away from anything that can catch fire, especially blankets and curtains.
If you use candles, blow them out when you leave a room.
If there is an electrical storm, unplug sensitive electronics.
Please get a carbon monoxide detector. CO is virtually undetectable until you're already poisoned. It can kill you in your sleep by depriving the body of oxygen. It is more likely to affect pets, children, and people who are lying down first because it sits lower in the air.
If you are renting from a slumlord: chances are higher that if a house fire occurs, they will blame you. Photograph the interior of your home once each winter to prove that you didnt overload outlets or keep the couch too close to a heater if a fire occurs, and provide this informstion ONLY tontyebfire department and your lawyer. Make sure you are doing what you can control to keep you and your family safe. Contact your local fire department for info regarding tenant rights during and after a fire in your county.
GET RENTERS INSURANCE. It is cheap, especially compared to the cost of everything you love in your home. Mine is $120 per year for $40k in coverage. The average that I've seen is $55-$150 per year. Shop around for the best rate in your area, it is 100% worth it. After getting the insurance, document the serial numbers of every major electronic in your home. Gaming consoles, TV, blenders, laptops, and even your phone. There is no guarantee your phone will make it outside with you during a fire.
Please keep yourself and your family safe this winter.
If a house fire does occur, even if you have a place to stay while recovering, please call your local Red Cross. You may be eligible for financial assistance, medical and spiritual care, and mental health care. A Disaster Action Team member will contact you and get your case opened and get you started on your recovery, likely with financial assistance, and a case worker will follow up shortly after.
We can also help replace medical equipment, prescriptions, disability aids (including glasses, compression socks, and wheelchairs), and overnight necessities like toothpaste and deodorant.
If you or someone you know has suffered a disaster like a home fire, please contact the Red Cross.

The entire town of Rolling Fork, MS has been wiped out. At least 23 dead, 4 missing. 110,000 people are without power.
How to help:
Do not self-deploy, you could slow down the process. Donate money/resources to the following organizations instead.
Organizations
Rolling Fork Civic Center (Accepting donations of essentials like water and food at 19719 Hwy 61 South, Rolling Fork, MS 39159)
Convoy of Hope (Accepting monetary donations)
American Red Cross (Accepting monetary donations) (Edit: link is not wanting to work on tumblr, just go to the American Red Cross website and find the AL-MS section)
(Note as of April 6, 2022: I’ve heard in the tags that the American Red Cross may be controversial, so do your research to make an informed decision if you plan on donating to this charity).
Volunteer Mississippi (Accepting monetary donations; they will also update the volunteer page as needs arise)
United Cajun Navy (Accepting monetary donations, also in need of more trucks and trailers)
Tumblr media
MS Department of Public Safety (Accepting donations of bottled water, canned goods, and paper products in Jackson, MS.)

One of the NGOs that's been consistently here for us is World Central Kitchen. As soon as the disaster instigated by russia has struck, they've joined the efforts with Ukrainian volunteers, military and civic services and are providing food, water and other immediate help on the ground.
Along with grassroots Ukrainian volunteer orgs like Come Back Alive and Prytula Foundation, WCK is definitely worth donating to!

so, when I first got news last night that Turkey and Syria had been hit by an earthquake, I posted that we didn't know how bad it was yet but that I'd post some charities to donate to once there was more news out. well, it's bad. it's really fucking bad. it's 2,000 dead and counting bad.
AKUT: !!! Turkish-based search and rescue NGO
Doctors without borders, as always they're some of the best NGOs out there
Syrian American Medical Society for Syria-specific help
Union of Medical Relief and Care Organizations (UOSSM)
Save the Children
Turkish Red Crescent
The White Helmets: Syria grassroots charity
globalgiving
One of the best things you can do right now is donate blood. Turkey was already running critically low on their reserves and Syria has been getting fucked by Russia (surprise!) since 2015. if you're able to donate, please donate blood!
