Icebergs in the Disko Bay in Greenland
Greenland Arctic Icebergs drifting on the ocean waters of Disko Bay under dramatic twilight sky. Arctic Ocean, Ilulissat Icefjord – Disko Bay, Ilulissat, Greenland
Panorama of an Arctic Iceberg drifting on the calm waters of the Arctic Ocean. The twilight skyscape is creating a dramatic backdrop for the majestic iceberg. This photo was taken at the Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland, a place known for its unique natural beauty. The iceberg is jagged and imposing, a reminder of the power and resilience of nature. Watching it slowly drift out to sea is awe-inspiring and humbling.

YOU - “So I went to sea aged 12, and I began to build myself a great gilded life that didn't humiliate me to live. And so all of those stories that you would have my biographer tally as courage… it's all vanity. It always has been. And we are at the end of vanity.”
DRAMA - Well, thanks for that, old boy. Really makes someone feel good to hear they’re no longer needed.
CAPTAIN CROZIER - Francis claps both of his hands on your shoulders. This is the warmest touch you’ve felt since leaving the ships. It may be the warmest touch you’ve felt in the past year, or in your entire life.
“Then you are free. Mine your courage from a different lode now. Friendship. Brotherhood.”

Nightlights in Qeqertaq Image Credit & Copyright: Dennis Lehtonen
Explanation: Light pollution is usually not a problem in Qeqertaq. In western Greenland the remote coastal village boasted a population of 114 in 2020. Lights still shine in its dark skies though. During planet Earth's recent <href="https: archive.php?view='1&day=06&month=11&year=2023"' spaceweather.com="">intense geomagnetic storm, on November 6 these beautiful curtains of aurora borealis fell over the arctic realm. On the eve of the coming weeks of polar night at 70 degrees north latitude, the inspiring display of northern lights is reflected in the waters of Disko Bay. In this view from the isolated settlement a lone iceberg is illuminated by shore lights as it drifts across the icy sea. </href="https:>

Every year billions of tonnes of ice from the Ilulissat Icefjord calve into Disko Bay just south of Ilulissat, Greenland. The iceberg which sank the Titanic originated here.

This might seem like a weird question, but what would happen if one of the sailors in the middle of a voyage like the Franklin expedition was discovered to be a woman disguised as a man? Would they keep her locked up until they landed at a port, punish her physically, or just do nothing about the situation until they landed? I saw that video about the peglar papers that I thought you said was an inspiration for your blog’s name mention that dna found on one of the skeletons suggested one of them could’ve been a woman (though she also said that it more than likely was the dna degrading over time), but I was curious about what would happen if that were true.
This is such an interesting question and it pains me that I'm not better equipped to answer it fully!
Women disguising themselves as men and joining up was not entirely uncommon, of course - there are many documented cases and likely many, many more undocumented ones. The case of "William Brown" springs to mind - a young black woman who served the Navy successfully aboard HMS Queen Charlotte and in the same position as Peglar, Captain of the Foretop, no less.
I've struggled, however, to find solid information on what would be done in any official sense if a sailor was discovered to be a woman in disguise. There are cases of female sailors being flogged and otherwise punished but it always seems to be for other infractions, not specifically for being female.
So, alas, I remain very much NOT an expert on the subject! For now then, I'm afraid you'll have to make do with my opinions and relatively-educated speculations!
-
I think if a woman were to be discovered during the Expedition, what they would do with her would depend chiefly on how far into the voyage they were at the time.
At Stromness or Disko Bay, the option most likely in my mind would be that she would simply be sent home with the last letters and crewmen discharged due to sickness (and with a minimum of fuss to preserve the prestige of the Expedition). There's historical precedent for that as it's what happened to William Brown aboard HMS Queen Charlotte - ultimately discharged for "being a female".
If they'd already entered the Arctic labyrinth at the time, they of course, would not have had that option. I think it unlikely that a disguised woman would be punished physically and I don't think she'd necessarily be locked up either. With conditions as tough as they were and resources stretching thinner over time, it seems doubtful to me that they'd sacrifice an able body whether that be the woman herself or anyone set to guard her.
I think at most in that situation that they might have set some restrictions on her movement and interaction with others for her own safety. It's important to consider, after all, that the prohibition of women aboard was in some ways for their own protection. It wasn't just bullshit attitudes of the time deeming women unlucky and/or inherently weaker/worse at being a sailor etc., it was also the sad fact that if they were found to be the only woman within a thousand miles of the ship, their safety from the predation of their fellow sailors couldn't necessarily be guaranteed.
-
In the case of the Franklin Expedition, I think personally that the deterioration of DNA theory is the most likely one. The remains that exist sat for a long time and in incredibly harsh environmental conditions, after all.
But I certainly like and am intrigued by the idea of female sailors embarking on the Expedition. I'm going to be thinking about all the implications of it forevermore and I'd love to hear opinions and information from others on the subject! :)

PERCEPTION [Easy: Success] - There.
DRAMA - Do you see it too? In the corner. Tell me, old chap, is it hideous or not? It rides quite the line between the two.
You look in the corner of the chest. There, amongst the old disguises and chipped masks is something that looks like a garment that has been rolled up around itself and placed so far back so that it would be a disguise left for the last man to pick.
1. Pick it up.
2. Keep looking.
You pick it up and pull it out of the chest. As you do, it unravels. Soft brownish fabric spills to the floor. This garment has certainly seen better, warmer days, but there is a beauty in its resilience. The beading in its bodice needs repair, but it still glimmers in the lamplight.
1. It’s a dress.
RESPLENDENT DRESS - So I am.
1. Wait- was that one of my own thoughts or not?
RESPLENDENT DRESS - Does it matter? I was only stating the obvious. We’re kindred spirits, you and I.
1. You’re a dress. How can we be kindred spirits?
2. [Volition: Challenging 12] Put the Resplendent Dress back in the chest.

-1 But look at it!
YOU - “You’re a dress. How can we be kindred spirits?”
RESPLENDENT DRESS - Shh, just look at us. What a handsome couple we make. Why don’t you try me on? Go ahead.
You hold the dress up by its shoulders and line the seams up with your torso. Though it was not tailored to your body, there is a kinship between the two of you.
RESPLENDENT DRESS - That’s the beauty of it, ma femme. Neither of us were made for what we are. That’s almost like being made for each other, isn’t it?
1. I wasn’t made for anyone.
2. [Volition: Formidable 13] Put the dress away.

YOU - “I wasn’t made for anyone.”
VANITY - You swear that you can hear a quiet chuckle in the back of your head. It’s a woman’s voice. It’s also your voice. They sound exactly the same.
RESPLENDENT DRESS - Careful. You’re bleeding.
MERRY CHRISTMAS GOD BLESS US EVERY ONE
