(via Divya Victor: "Make/Do")
(Academy of American Poets)
For Jamal Cyrus and Tomás Morin, and all kith who make do to make work
“Do you also make work that isn’t political?”
I mean, do we make work
about where and when we were
raised: the three-whistle corner store
the empty coke bottle trill
the nickname that doesn’t nick us
as we blow through customs
with a toothpick smile
and hell-no eyes, sweet fools
greasing the bike chains
for this day, always saying
someone better fix this street
light? Do we flicker at night
when the kids are sleeping
dim, bright, dim, bright, do we?
Do we, at times, make work
about who breaks the news
to us at breakfast and how the syrup
she’s holding is now trembling, how
she’s beating, beating, beating
what no one can now eat, the mouth
fumbling for what no one
can now say? Do we make it
work with mirrors held
to the bottom of lakes, with combs
pulled through palms, with thumbs
flipping the bills, with two bags
and three names
at the border?
I mean, do we make work
about the road that crackles
with sirens or about Dad’s hydrangeas
which came up again that summer
violet clouds of bruises and pinker
than the Hubba Bubba we were popping
so loud, no one could stand us
but we grinned and grinned because
any air left in us meant
we could still answer
years later
a question like this?

With the end of my Audible membership drawing near, I turned my ear again to poetry. Smokes and Whiskey by Tejaswini Divya Naik, narr. Nimisha Sirohi Titled Smokes and Whiskey, the book is a collection of 42 poems on relationships, the ups and downs that come along with it, falling apart like rubble, but then finding oneself, gathering that strength back and building yourself up, back from that…

sort of a renaissance painting
i still imagine a time / a once-in-a-blue-moon / when you'll grasp my hand / and i'll study every smoothened callus / on your pale fingers / and you'd flail at my wrist / feeling my pulse shorten and break.
i'd twirl you around / a sway-like movement / you'd throw your head back / neck turned red / losing all composure / you'd never let anyone see that before / and i'd laugh to reel you back into me.
we'd fall to the floor / and get back up to fall again / until your familiar ringtone sounds / and you slump unto my stained mattress / like you've done a million times before / you'd stretch your hands to each edge / and feel a sense of ease on my pillowcase.
a haggle on the way down the stairs / our socks slip on the wood / as i walk you out the door / your car pulls clamorously up / a deep hole in my eyes / that you'd close with your arm around my shoulders / a pull on my chest as you carry me in.
we stay there for a while / your soft skin around my neck / my hands to your waist / and we'd wish the insistent honks would quiet around us / as you let out a breath of a chuckle / and look me up and down a last time / regarding me like i've always regarded you.

Made up of a handful of pages torn out from one of the Dawn of Eve gratitude journals. Divya stacked them together and folded them in half to make a small book. To bind it, she punctured holes using a pen and tied it together using the journal’s ribbon that she cut off and in half using the pair of scissors from the First Aid Kit. (Sorry for messing with the First Aid Kit, Erin.😘)
Roses are red Violets are blue This is a poem And it's just for you
It's not Emily Dickinson And I hope that's alright This one's from me And written by firelight
- "A Poem for Clarke", Divya W.
Tumblr media
Knock knock Who's there It’s your mate Bozo
The best of the best He never rests Always there Looking debonair
"Our Favorite Clown", Divya W.

With a glint in his eye and a corner of a smile One conversation, a simple moment The things that change us if we notice When we look up, sometimes
"Underdog", Alicia Keys
* Okay, this one obviously isn't me. I hope you don't mind that I've included some lyrics in here. This is from one of my favorite Alicia Keys songs and I feel like it reads like a poem.
P.S. Aren't all songs just poems? But with music to them?
Tumblr media
Don't you miss a cup of tea? Wishing for one to wash up from sea Splash of milk and sugars three Would make us Brits feel very free
"Cuppa", Divya W.
Tumblr media
This island gives me quite a scare Going into the jungle, please beware Travel in twos, you hereby swear There's a scary wolf out there
"Buddy System", Divya W.
Tumblr media
This is a haiku Writing haikus is quite hard So much counting, ugh
- "Haikus Are Hard", Divya W.
Tumblr media
Cold night breeze Swaying trees Cannot fall Asleep with ease
Fire burns Eves toss and turn Growing with Lots of concerns
"Trouble Sleeping", Divya W.
Tumblr media
We've been here for awhile Lost on this dangerous isle I'm missing the sight of tile But it's nice to see you smile
"The Little Things", Divya W.
Tumblr media
* I didn't write this one. But it's the only poem I know from memory.
Dear Basketball,
From the moment I started rolling my dad’s tube socks And shooting imaginary Game-winning shots In the Great Western Forum I knew one thing was real:
I fell in love with you.
[...]
Pretend Divya wrote all of this out.
“Dear Basketball”, Kobe Bryant (RIP)
Tumblr media
We're at the end But let's pretend This "book" of poems Is a lot longer than it actually is
Clarke, my friend I can't defend My awful poetry writing skills
Mend, bend, portend Offend, defend, descend These are just some words That rhyme with end
- "The End", Divya W.

We are on our knees. We are saying that the tulips have had it hard this week. We are saying something about the brightness & the dryness & we are saying we hope it will change. I press a finger into the loam, flick the dust on my jeans. We are listening to the snip of shears. I pick up a smooth, small disc of pink Sioux quartz, hold it like an avian heart in the palm. A disc slipped & beating from a time when all of North America was under sea. My finger walks the buttery vein that parses the stone in two & then in four. Its edges are under siege; its end at the foot of suburban perennials. Do you have stones, someone is asking me. Where you are from, do you have stones, like these. We have purple sunbirds, I am saying, & their hearts have four rooms, one for every answer to questions like these.
