Things I did last semester that boosted my average:
I don’t really like to toot my own horn but I see these posts a lot and I thought I’d share what really worked for me personally :)
•took both handwritten and typed notes (minimized hand fatigue so my notes were actually good lol) (also it’s far easier to take extensive notes and delete them later than to take minimal notes and be stuck trying to remember what was said)
•before an exam: created flashcards, diagrams, and rewrote or fleshed out notes on a word doc in a simulated exam atmosphere to enhance later recall
•planned a month at a time so I knew in advance when I could socialize and when I had to Grind™️ to prevent burnout
•made friends in my classes!! genuinely makes a big difference
•annotated the hell out of everything (pencil or post in textbooks to resell, pen and highlighters in books I knew I’d keep, all online readings were converted to PDFS and I scribbled all over them)
•annotated with jokes this is maybe unorthodox but I swear it worked for me- I’d laugh at the wording, draw emojis, reference memes, and crack jokes in the margins of my books and it made it so much easier to remember key points of the readings later on
•cut off toxic friends. self explanatory lol but stress impacts your grades!

Why was it that when she heard Granny ramble on about witchcraft she longed for the cutting magic of wizardry, but whenever she heard Treatle speak in his high-pitched voice she would fight to the death for witchcraft? She'd be both, or none at all. And the more they intended to stop her, the more she wanted it.

OK SO I think I finally have a direction for this blog, but financial aid might throw it under a bridge and burn it then maybe hit with a bus a few times and then light it on fire again just to be sure and if the fire wasn't enough, just wait for the water damage from putting the fire out...

9/15/2022
sometimes the week just passes in a blur, and this week was one of those weeks. its definitely calmed down in terms of my job fitting in with school, which i'm super thankful for. i feel like in some of my classes im starting to become lazy, which i really don't want to happen, so i need to re-evaluate the effort im putting into my studies. i really like my classes, so i dont want to fall behind.
i did make one rather bad mistake this week, and that is i missed attending a class entirely, purely because i forgot i was taking it. it's online but synchronous, so when i realized i missed it my heart dropped. thankfully after i emailed the professor he said it was no worries, and he hasn't added any new material, so im still on track with the rest of the class. i never want to experience that again though.
something good DID happen though! i was missing a credit for a class i tested out of, and i procrastinated (say 1.5 years) on trying to get that credit to show up in my transcript. i finally found the drive to figure it out, and i was able to get the class waived! what a relief too, that was gonna be hell to figure out.
other then these things life has been mundane, but enjoyable. it's finally cooled down, and so i've been pulling out the fall outfits, which i've been having a lot of fun trying to create.
i have a bit of a list for the weekend, so here it is:
clean the suite
practice on friday and saturday
finish geology module
start & finish critical summary essay

Hi! I saw you have a triple major and double minor and I’m wondering what that’s like?
I’m considering a double major and single/double minor
If you wouldn’t mind, what is your combined workload like how how does having three majors impact that? Also, how will your degree be affected by having three majors as opposed to one?
If you have any other advice in the area I would very much appreciate it, thank you :)
Hi!
At my University, it's not that difficult. I came in as just a Political Science major. After the first semester, I added International Relations. I just added History coming into my sophomore year. I had a lot of AP Credits from high school so that covered a lot of my Gen Ed requirements. My International Relations degree is 1/2 the curriculum from Political Science and 1/2 from History, so why not do them both? Plus, my minors also end up being classes I would already be taking, plus one or two extras.
Right now (1st semester sophomore): I am finishing two gen-eds, two political science/IR classes, and two history classes. Depending on what kind of course it is, I spend anywhere between a GOOD, FOCUSED hour to four hours of work, in a typical week. I have procrastination problems though, and on my worst days, I end up working straight through 10-4 classes and then 8:00-1:00. Most of my classes count towards multiple degrees. For example, my Comparative Politics class counted for both Political Science and International Relations. The same goes for classes for my minors.
I have plenty of time for clubs and socializing! It does not consume all the time and some of my club requirements take MORE time than some of my classes (I spend more time doing community service for a club than I do studying for Spanish 102).
At my university (I can't speak for all of them), it is 120 credits to graduate. If I want to earn the degrees (diplomas?) for all three, it's an additional 30 credits per degree. So to have degrees in both Poly Sci and IR, I'd need 150. 180 credits if I want to include history.
Granted, I say all this as a humanities major. I have friends who are double majors in STEM fields or triple minors in STEM fields. For a lot of them, it ends up being about 18 extra credits if it's something related (For example, it's 18 extra credits to double major in Mechanical Engineering and Physics).
My best advice? Ease into it. A lot of people change their major once or twice. It's ok to start off as just one thing and switch to two things or two completely different things! Time management. Study your college's website and know what classes are required. It surprised me how many of my friends didn't know some of their required classes! Be confident in yourself and know when to say "no" when it might result in you being overwhelmed.
Hope this helps! Best of luck <3

Message Response: Double Majoring
Last week I received the following comment on an old blog post.
Thinking about declaring a second major as well. Currently a computer science major. How many classes and how much more time on your degrees will it add possibly?
I wrote up some initial thoughts, but as my response exceeded the character limit I ultimately directly messaged the reader. The ease with which I was able to write those initial thoughts indicated to me that I had a good start for a full blog post. If you have questions for me, feel free to submit them here. If I’m knowledgeable and interested in your question I may write up a blog post response. Otherwise, I’ll try and send a quick message that either answers your question or acknowledges my inability to answer said question. For more about my current approach to handling reader questions, click here.
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ll know that I’m an engineering (B.S.) and computer science double major who declared both of these majors during my first year of college. You can read about the declaration of my first and second major at the respective links.
Many of my thoughts on double majoring are universal, but the calculations I perform are Smith-specific and not applicable to fellow engineering students. Let’s start off with Smith’s graduation requirements. To graduate, one must earn a total of 128 credits and complete a major. We have what’s known as an open curriculum, so outside of your major, there is a ton of flexibility. The only additional requirements are that you complete a writing intensive course during your first year and that 64 of your credits come from outside of your major. This 64-credit rule doesn’t apply to engineers like myself pursuing a B.S. degree. We must instead either complete the Latin Honors distributional requirements or minor in a non-STEM field. I personally opted for the flexibility of the distributional requirements route which you can read more about here.
At Smith, a normal course load is 16 credits per semester which equates to four 4-credit classes. Over 8-semesters of taking the normal 4-course course load, you can take a total of 32 courses. Taking an extra credit or two is common in STEM as lab classes are 5-credit hours. Students may also opt to take a few 1-2 credit electives, but we’ll focus our analysis on a standard 4-course course load. As a major only requires 10-11 courses, double majoring really is not all that difficult. To give you a sense of what those 10-11 courses may look like, we’ll use the recently redesigned computer science major as an example. The computer science major requires a total of 11 courses: 2 introductory courses, 3 core courses, 2 math courses, 4 intermediate electives, and a 300-level course. If you’d like to learn more about Smith’s computer science department, check out their webpage and these posts of mine.
Here are some tradeoffs to keep in mind. First, double majoring reduces the number of electives you can take. Here is the basic math. Take for instance two 11-course non-overlapping majors for a total of 22 required courses (plus one for the writing intensive). This leaves 9 free electives which essentially translates to an elective every single semester. This presumes that you start on your double major early on. Adding a second major “late” is sometimes doable, but definitely isn’t easy.
I will also note that there’s a difference between double majoring in similar and disparate fields. If the majors are super different, taking fewer electives may not be a big deal as you’ll naturally be taking a range of courses. With similar majors, there may be some overlap which in turn could free up an elective or two.
The other note about this calculation is that it only takes into account doing the bare minimum for both majors. This can be a tradeoff in itself. Depending on your post-college plans, doing the bare minimum for your primary major just may not cut it. I don’t know the specifics, so do your own research on what graduate schools and employers in your specific field expect. Furthermore, it’s also my understanding that honors projects are in addition to your major requirements.
While I’ve generally demonstrated the feasibility of a double major, that does not necessarily mean everyone should do one. At least at Smith, double majors are actually very common. Because of this, I think a lot of students feel pressure to double major. Despite being a double major, I’m more anti-double major than you might expect. Beyond the aforementioned tradeoffs, the reality is that your time may be better spent just taking the courses that are most interesting and relevant to you rather than worrying about specific requirements. By requirements, I’m not just talking about the number of classes. We’ve already established that it’s not exorbitant. What I’m getting at is that majors typically have core classes and aim to provide some breadth of knowledge in the given field. If you’re double majoring primarily because you think it looks impressive, seriously don’t bother. If you want to actually be impressive, excel in a single major. If you’re only a course or two short of a double major, sure go ahead and take the extra classes.
If you have a specific second major in mind that you are excited about, I recommend creating a 4-year plan to map out the required courses and some of the electives you would like to take. If the plan looks interesting and doable, go for it. In other words, I don’t think double majors are inherently bad. I’m just of the belief that they should be done thoughtfully and for the right reasons. You could instead consider a minor as they typically require 5 courses which affords you an extra 5-6 electives as compared with a double major. It’s my belief that minoring is a good compromise to double majoring, but that adding a minor just to add one is sort of pointless. To read a bit more about how I create and maintain my own 4-year plan, click here. The one case where I’d perhaps argue more strongly for a double major is if your dream major isn’t very employable.
As mentioned in the introduction, engineering is a bit different as it’s our only B.S. and thus has twice the number of required classes as compared to B.A. majors. The truth is that the only reason I’ve been able to take electives is that I’ve routinely taken five courses per semester. I also came in with some AP credits and there is some overlap between my majors.  To check out all of the courses I’ve taken, click here. In the near future, I hope to do a deep dive into my honest thoughts and motivations behind my credit overloads. I came to Smith with the intention of majoring in engineering and taking a bunch of computer science classes. Why? Because at the time I was interested in computer engineering which lies at the intersection of electrical engineering and computer science. Furthermore, a double major seemed impossible. I figured I’d take enough courses for a minor, but had talked myself out of actually minoring so that I could ignore the specific requirements. For more about my personal academic journey into engineering and computer science click here. There’s a lot more to unpack about my double major now that my current career plan only really requires my secondary major, but that’s a topic for another day.

i know everybody's like "jason todd would've gone to college for english if he didn't die" which is awesome. like i love that headcanon don't get me wrong. but i feel like he would've went for social work.
jason peter todd, who grew up defending his SUDS mother from his abusive father, who lived on the streets when he should've been in elementary school, who was so poor and hungry that he was literally stealing tires off a fancy car to sell so he could eat?? that man would absolutely have worked in child welfare. whether as a foster care case manager or a community case worker helping at-risk youth, i genuinely think he would've gravitated towards helping kids in situations like his.

Jazz wasn't crazy. People might argue that burning her childhood home to the ground with her parents still inside would be an indicator of insanity. But how else was she supposed to react after coming back home from college to find out her parents had brutally killed her brother via vivisection?
Dying her hair blonde wasn't crazy either before anyone asked. Plenty of girls dyed their hair when they needed a change. Besides, she could never live with herself if she kept the same hair color as that vile woman.
Admittedly Jazz would have to secede moving to Gotham had been a little crazy but it was the perfect place to start fresh and blend in despite her "quirks". She had even picked out a nice new identity for herself.
Clearly Jazz was not crazy as she had managed to land a job at Arkham Asylum as a psychiatrist. If she were really insane would they have ever hired her? No they wouldn't have.
Jazz was not crazy. She was very much sane. Just like her precious Mr. J.

im going to be stressed lol
hey friends! I know not a lot of people come on my page but I would just like to announce my new change in majors and minors!
I was originally going for just being a psychology major with 2 minors, one in disability studies and one in pre-professional health but I decided to double major and double minor. I am now double majoring in psychology and criminal justice and double minoring in sociology and disability studies. I have some plans for researching during my time there and this is where I will continue to update you guys on my studying and college in general!
