When The Fire Is Out

For @drarrymicrofic prompt: embers.

Harry knows his back will be killing him tomorrow. Lying on the floor this long cannot be good for him. Plus his arm is starting to tingle where Draco's head currently rests, slightly cutting off blood flow. Harry wants to move it, but he can't bear the thought of Draco's head lying on the floor, or worse, Harry accidentally waking him up.

He curls into Draco instead, careful not to jostle him, and eyes the glowing embers in the fireplace. When the fire is out, Harry thinks as his eyes fall shut, I'll take us upstairs.

Harry wakes the next morning, still on the floor in front of the fireplace, back aching. He looks at Draco, messy-haired and clinging to Harry in his sleep, and smiles before falling back asleep.

soulmates

“Do you think… we’re soulmates?” Harry asked. “Like, we’re destined to be together?”

He lay on the grass, limbs stretched out around him making him look like a messy-haired starfish. The summer months were creeping up on them and Harry didn't think he was in any better place to be than at this moment. Until he ruined the quiet with his fat mouth.

He didn't dare look over at Draco who sat with his back against the trunk of the whomping willow, nose stuck in a thick book about motorized vehicles.

When Draco didn't respond, Harry feared he said something wrong, that what he said was something Draco didn't want to hear.

His head swirled with thoughts, wild thoughts that were obviously not true but he couldn't help but think them. They went around his head, flashing before his eyes, making his lips quiver and his heart freeze.

What if he thought his idea was stupid or weird? What if he was annoyed with Harry’s questions? What if Draco didn't like him like that? What if Draco actually didn't care for Harry and was just playing a long con because maybe he’s really just that cruel and-?

A pale hand interlocked with Harry’s own, cold and nimble against his warm palm and scared fingers. Harry looked up and was greeted by the sight of his long-haired boyfriend resting his chin on his knees, giving Harry a loving look.

It made Harry's heart skip a beat.

“I dunno,” Draco said softly, pale grey eyes dropping to adore interlocked hands. “It sounds nice, though, doesn't it?”

“It does,” Harry didn't even register that he was speaking, the words just came out of his mouth breathlessly and still.

“I think it's possible,” Draco said. “Maybe we wouldn't be us, but we’d us if that makes sense,”

“I couldn’t imagine a world without you, Draco,” Harry said, eyes hardening and blazing with a promise that Draco couldn't decode, but it made a chill run down his spine. “Even if, in some world out there we hated each other, I dont think i would be anyone without you,”

A smile, those rare, wide smiles that made your cheeks hurt and teeth shine, spread across Draco's face. He smiled so wide it made his eyes crunch close, the sight making Harry want to just get up and kiss him senseless.

“I like the idea,” Draco said, words small but heavy. “Soulmates…”
