Saturday night at La Zorba in Paris......
Finally, I was able to crawl out of the shed of Reille – without my backpack for once, what a relief – and walked down the street to the metro station on Saturday night before Daylight Saving Time on Sunday – you know longer days & shorter nights – to take a few trains up to Belleville to catch a proper experimental music event. And, this was definitely that type of event to catch!I had the…

When people say they listen to everything, I take it as a challenge.
I love drone doom! I’m sure you have a taste for extratone, too. What’s the most extreme slam death metal band you know? Or here’s a spicy question, do you like traditional black metal or unblack metal better? Which Cannibal Corpse vocalist do you like better? Don’t you hate it when the music you listen to isn’t even on Spotify? It’s so great to see Khanate back. You must know so many bands with fewer than 10,000 monthly listeners that I’d love to hear!
Oh, what’s that? You meant to say you like both pop and country at the same time? Then say that. If you say you like everything, I expect that to include the furthest reaches of metal, hardcore, and experimental music.

Tumanduumband – Throne Of Grief (2023)
Tumblr media
James looks at Throne Of Grief, the new album from Stourbridge, UK based doom, drone, noise, sludge act Tumanduumband, released interpedently on October 27, 2023.
Tumanduumband give us an album so heavy and so distorted that at times it makes you wonder if your brain is breaking. It can seriously be a borderline mind altering experience for the listener, particularly if their mind happens to be altered at the time the experience. The two piece instrumental duo do things with a bass guitar that make it not even sound recognizable due to ultra low tuning, feedback and distortion. This is a killer release and one that really stands out as a unique sound in the heavily saturated fuzz market.

Sunn O))) - Black One
Wow... okay so Sunn O))) is one of those bands that i have been on and off about for years. When they're on... they are fucking on, and right now they are fucking on. Sometimes I will go through phases where all i really want to listen to is a hype ass rap song, or a short and brutal grindcore song. Something easy, something familiar, melodic, singable. There is *Nothing* wrong with this kind of music, and a lot of my favorite albums of all time are this way. But sometimes you just have to pour yourself something stiff, whip out your favorite book, or even just roll something and sit back and take in something harsh, long, and beautiful. This is that album. For the uninitiated it is pronounced SUN not Sun-Oh. Now that we have that borderline meme of a band explanation out of the way, this album is primarily made up of these elongated tremolo or just straight picked riffs that each note is dragged out to such an extent that it morphs into a new form. The distortion forcing the note to waver, rising and falling, beautifully in this droning procession of notes that hit you one after another. The vocals are just as harsh, screeching and also elongated so you can hear the inhales, and the pushing of the air out of the lungs and through the frayed and forcibly constructed vocal cords. This is an incredibly beautiful and emotional album. I recommend everyone give it a shot once. It might not be your thing, but it is an experience that is worth having, and one I love to revisit.

[15th of September 2023] k a i r y u ≃ s h i n - ≊ d a r k ~ r e e f ≊ (triple album & birth of oceanpedal)
I just really wanted to make some oceangrunge music, and I've ended up with enough tracks for 3 releases I guess. However, I took a slightly different approach to making these three, and I'm gonna call that oceanpedal.
Before sampling, all original samples got the backpedal treatment. I took the samples that I liked, slowed them down and reversed. I did the same for drums in some cases. So it's like regular oceangrunge, just slower and with reversed samples. Goal of kairyu-shin project is to make sample heavy drone/doom metal music, so that was the approach I took with drums and arrangement in general. Keeping it simple and interesting.
Although oceangrunge is a dead genre, it's still getting made. Though I don't really like how most of these new releases sound like trap music. I prefer a lot more the POSEIDON IN CHAINS sound. So if you want to create some oceanpedal, follow the 2nd paragraph, and make sure that they sound a lot more atmospheric (and metal). I will probably also make a subreddit where you can share you oceanpedal tunes, since r/oceangrunge is down for a while now
Edit: I made the subreddit (r/oceanpedal)
