dustin talks about his brother a lot at hellfire meetings. it always garners a strange reaction from lucas and mike, but eddie thinks it's kind of cute. he's a bit surprised he's never heard of steve henderson, especially since he'd have been in his second graduating class, but doesn't think much of it.
after about a week and a half of dustin moping around because his brother was off on a trip somewhere with, (get ready for this one...):
'this-girl-who-definitely-should-be-his-girlfriend-but-isn't-for-some-dumb-reason', (whew) he bursts into hellfire absolutely brimming with excited energy. lucas smiles and explains that his brother (a word he says with an amusement eddie doesn't understand) is getting back from his trip this evening and is going to come to pick them all up after the session.
eddie follows them out to the parking lot later on, kind of excited to meet the older brother he's heard so much about. only to stop dead in his tracks at steve harrington leaning against his fucking beemer. dustin screams and charges at him, and steve just cheers his name in response. they do some fucking complicated hand-shake that ends in a lightsaber battle, and then steve grabs the kid and hugs and spins him in a little circle.
lucas and mike laugh at the look on his face. he's too busy mentally combining the impressions he had of steve henderson and steve harrington together to notice.

Imagine with me ✨
Modern au of Steve wanting to go on The Amazing Race. Robin was originally his partner but she ended up backing out due to either school, job or just because she’s a klutz. His second choice is Dustin.
They’re immediate fan favorites. Steve and Dustin are nonstop with their back and forth, giving each other shit and bickering like the brothers they are.
Dustin’s memory works a whole lot better than Steve’s while Steve is great in the athletic field. Steve does the driving, Dustin holds the map and they argue about where they are half of the time. The other teams are constantly amazed they even make it to the destination half of the time.
They win of course 😌
Had this thought while at work and decided it needed to be shared 🥰

Dustin is the only one who can communicate with a cursed man, who turned into a bat. Can be read without context, I suppose?
Steve is hanging out at Dustin's house (he gets lonely). Dustin does his hw, pointedly ignoring how Steve is petting the bat he told him multiple times is actually a human being.
Steve: I think, he likes me
Dustin:
Steve: don't you look cute, little thing
Steve: come here, come to da-
Dustin immediately turns in his chair. Steve stills under his glare, refusing to look his way.
Dustin: don't you dare finish that sentence
Steve: but-
Dustin: it's a grown-up man you're holding
Steve: he doesn't mind?
Steve looks at his chest, where the bat is plastered, wings all over his shirt.
Steve: you don't mind, do you?
The bat nods eagerly.
Steve: see?
Dustin: I have a better question for you
Dustin: do you hear?
Steve: now, that's just rude
Dustin: I'm not talking about your hearing, dumbass
Dustin: I'm talking about the Bat's thoughts
Dustin: do you hear them?
Steve: no?..
Dustin: obviously.
Steve looks at Dustin, then at the bat, then again at Dustin.
Steve: what's he's thinking about now?
Dustin: he...
Dustin:
Dustin: DUDE.
Steve jumps, the bat leaves his chest to sit at the Dustin's desk. It does some weird moves with its wings, clearly arguing about something.
Dustin: I don't care
Bat does some wiggling.
Dustin: keep it in your fucking non-existent pants
Bat looks warily Steve's way for a moment. Dustin's arms are now crossed over his chest and he looks pissed.
Steve: what's happening?
Dustin: nothing
He makes a pause, clearly listening to the bat.
Dustin: don't touch him anymore
Bat stills.
Steve: why
Dustin: I'm just repeating his words
For some reason, Steve's expression changes.
Steve: I- I just assumed he liked it too
Steve: I'm sorry I didn't ask for permission
Dustin: it's not-
Steve: I didn't mean to make him uncomfortable, I'm sorry
Dustin: Steve-
Steve: I- I probably should go, sorry aga-
Dustin: STEVE
He only now notices the bat crawling up his shirt. He stops in the middle of standing up to cup a hand around it, so it won't fall.
Dustin: you didn't make him uncomfortable
Dustin: the only one who's uncomfortable here is me
Steve: I'm not sure I follow?
Dustin: you make him... happy?
Steve: you mean, he likes me?
Dustin: I mean "he wants to fuck you", but close enough
Steve: oh.

headcanon that after the whole Russian thing, Dustin and Robin continued to study the language just so they could talk in it behind Steve’s back and he would know what they were doing, but he wouldn’t have a clue what they were saying bc he didn’t care enough to retain any Russian himself. they don’t say anything mean about him, they just do it to piss him off.

rewatching season 2 very closely and i never realized how Steve's like. always willing to listen to the kids. he's constantly hearing them out and always treats their ideas as worth trying to understand
when mikes going on about bob and the demodog army, steve asks a little 'what do you mean' to get him to elaborate. even as they're running around talking about shadow monsters and referencing a drawing and 'what Mr Clarke taught us' he's actively following along, asking questions when he's confused and keeping up with where they're going. they definitely sound like kids still when talking in s2, and they absolutely still look like kids (Steve's like half a foot taller than most of them still) and yet it doesn't sound like hes talking to kids, he's just talking normal
and i feel like a lot of us forget because that dynamic is so different in season 4, but all the kids and especially dustin have no problem explaining their thoughts. s2 ep8 has a lot of this specifically. Mike and Dustin both elaborate on any questions like its nothing, no groans or exasperation. Hell, Dustin loves using big words and explanations and a running bit is that he keeps over-explaining things to other characters like max and hopper. but steve and the kids are on equal ground, no one's acting like anyone's incapable even while they argue
and he treats all their ideas 100% seriously, even the more out-there dnd talk. and he even looks at Hopper funny when he won't take Dustins mind flayer theory seriously
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first: following along with Dustin, looking at him seriously
second: hoppers annoyed, saying it can't help because it's a kids game
third: dustin's rebuttal, a glimpse of Steve's face, mouth open looking at hopper. this screenshot looks like weird looking, but you see the differences. hes notably changed expression looking at hop
and fourth: dustin continuing to talk to hopper while steve looks back down at the book.
he's just so important to the group, both in a genre sense (because how many things go wrong in movies because nobody will listen to the kids) and in a group dynamic (it makes sense that he's popular, he seems to be the kinda person to include everyone in conversations and actually listen to them)

thinking about how dustin henderson had no father or father figure in his life, and then he met steve and eddie and he looked up to them and needed them and canonically loved them to the point of always talking about them. and then he had to watch one of them die in front of him, had to hear his last words, had to tell his uncle that he died. and he was 14.
and this is also the town that was ableist towards him and bullied him. the same boy the girls all used to laugh at. the boy who was abandoned by his friends. i know a lot of that got resolved, but that kind of experience doesn't stop tormenting you. he's a genius and he's funny and he's a great friend and he's incredibly good hearted but we also need to acknowledge the trauma of dustin henderson.
i don't want to even think about what steve dying in s5 (if he does) would do to him.

Oh my god!!! That Steve/baby sister fic!!! If you ever want to build it out more I’d be obsessed (ie the party + extended party’s reactions, hop + Joyce and how everyone pitches in)
╰(⸝⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝⸝)╯ awwww anon!!!!!
Honestly I have been thinking about it and I know I put in the tags of the original post, buuuut. Robin called Steve Bud or Buddy which morphed into Bubba when they are being particularly soft with each other, and the baby (who I am possibly leaning towards calling Tina so her nickname can be Tintin because it's cute idk) picks up on it so calls Steve her Bubba. Also because "he's my big brother" can sort of become "he's my Bubba!" If words are smushed together by baby babble
But before all that, Steve (who walked to work that day because he didn't have a baby car seat yet and wasn't going to leave his baby sister whom he always wanted and loves so dearly already ALONE or worse. With their FATHER.) goes to, of all people, Mrs. Wheeler for help. He'd go to Joyce but she's working and Karen Wheeler has the youngest kid he knows so is the best bet for maybe getting some tips and also maybe a carrier because the bjorn isn't going to cut it for long. So he goes and Mr. Wheeler immediately thinks Steve's Accidental Baby Acquisition is due to Steve's own recklessness. (Steve is a prolific lover, sure, but he's smart and safe about it! When he was thirteen his dad sat him down for a talk about not wanting the disgrace of a shotgun wedding and his grandpa gave him a run down of venereal diseases he saw (didn't mention having but. Well.) His pals have in WWII that put the fear of God in him regarding unsafe sex. Moreso than the potential babies. So. He's always very careful. For this very reason!! Except apparently his dad didn't use his own advice but Steve isn't complaining because, once again, he always wanted a little sibling.)
Anyways the wheelers are like ohhhh a Harrington Scandal not involving the boy our daughter dated? Okay sure here's Holly's old baby carseat. Hopper is just. He's like. I thought Steve and that kid I kept giving warnings to about selling dope to were a thing and Steve is like "will people stop assuming she's mine!! I know I am a bit of a slut but I am terrified of chlamydia!!! And even if this WAS my fault (which it is not and also she's a gift I love you little baby sister you're the light of my life) I am taking responsibility for it so maybe we all need to be a little less judgy hmmm??"
Joyce and Karen give him some hand me down baby clothes and books, some good tips about feeding and burping and things like that, and Claudia and Sue offer to come passive aggressively congratulate Steve's dad.
Dustin is a little jealous because this Steve Time is going to be encroached upon by This Literal Infant but Steve is like Dustin... you are my Little Brother... My silly pal...Now you have a sister too!! 🥰 And Dustin is like Oh Shit That's Right and proceeds to try to teach this Literal Infant, it cannot be stressed enough that she is a few months old and cannot stay sitting up by herself, how to build a radio.
Eddie is just trying to not have a heart attack from the concentration of Pure Longing activated by seeing Steve With A Baby and has also been forbidden from playing anything loud near them. He is fine and deals with this by writing ballads that make Gareth gag from their sweetness and Jeff have a very knowingly indulgent look when he sees the lyrics. But Gareth lets he hit his drums with he baby hands and Jeff pretends she stole his nose so they aren't that put out by it.
El is Fascinated by the tiny human and asks lots of questions and wants to play with her, give her experiences of softness and kindness right off the bat she knew she herself was denied, so she's often the official baby holder when Steve needs to do something when the Party is around.
The rest of the party is pretty meh on the baby. Sure it's exciting at first but she just kinda becomes part of regular life. They take turns doing actual babysitting for Steve so he can work or run errands or even, gasp, have some normal early adult fun times, but it's all pretty regular. Erica is glad she's not the party baby anymore.
They do however probably secretly fight over who gets to be baby's godparent. Steve isn't allowed to know.

People have started to aggressively care for Steve, and it's a little weird.
But, somehow it's endearing to watch, and it's actually working. Steve was used to corporal punishment, so having care that somehow translates into that is quite effective.
Dustin has started to take note of the best interactions he's happened to overhear.
First it's Robin.
"Okay, truth or dare?"
"Dare!"
"Go take a fucking nap."
"What?"
"You heard me Harrington, go take a nap or I'm going to knock you the fuck out."
And Steve actually listens! Maybe it's because he's a little afraid of Robin, and doesn't think she knows just how strong she is, but he listens, and he's finally catching up on some much needed sleep.
After that, it's Hopper. Which is interesting because last time Dustin checked, Hopper didn't like Steve all that much... Maybe the trauma bond of being tortured by Russians gave him a change of heart.
"Harrington, I swear to god. If you don't get your ass over here for dinner tonight, I am going to ticket you for all those parties you had in high school."
"I- Hopper? I can't just-"
"Yes, you can. Joyce and I had better see you tonight."
And of course, Dustin being Dustin, he has to put himself on the list.
"Steve, if you don't take me to my therapy appointment I am going to tell Robin you skipped a nap yesterday."
And when they get to Dr. Jonah's office, Steve finds that it's actually his appointment, and get some much needed help.
Dustin, personally, thinks his method is the best, but... Others may disagree. Not that anyone knows he's making this list but. Still.
Anyways, this system works.
And he thinks it may be the best method, until he sees how Eddie gets Steve to care for himself. And yeah, maybe it was weird at first to see his two best older male friends kiss, not in a homophobic way, but a "ew my parents are in love" way, but after he saw how good they are for each other, it stopped being so odd.
"Stevie, have you eaten yet?
"No..."
"Lets go on a picnic!"
"But,"
"No buts! Help me make some sandwiches."
And there's a soft smile on Steve's face.
Maybe Dustin's method isn't the best one.

There’s something off about Steve and Dustin can’t place it.
Ever since they got back from the upside down, Steve seems more… not better but more, relaxed? Comfortable? He doesn’t know exactly, just something different.
It’s not like Dustin has never seen Steve relaxed, he’s been over at his house sitting next to his cat and listening to his mom explain how to make the perfect fettuccine dish. Steve is already comfortable around him to be bitchy to him, calling out Dustin’s shit immediately.
This? This is different.
Steve is on the grass laying down, arms behind his head and legs crossed. He looks like he could be asleep but Dustin watches as Steve shakes his foot and sees his mouth twitch at whatever Eddie’s whispering in his ear next to him. Robin laughing on Steve’s other side, her feet resting on Steve’s legs.
Dustin can tell there’s a difference between how Steve is acting now versus how Steve is normally relaxed.
Something is different and he needs to know what it is and how he can make sure his best friend big brother is always this… whatever it is. He deserves it.
“Are you trying to explode them? Isn’t that El’s thing?”
He startles and looks over at Nancy, she’s standing there with silent judgment; Dustin has seen that look on Mike many times, even if he knows both Wheel isn’t afraid to voice their judgment either.
Looking back at the trio, Robin now laying down with her head on Steve’s stomach and Eddie mirroring Steve.
“No,” he answers and looks back at Nancy to find her now looking curiously at the trio, “Just wondering what’s up with Steve”
Nancy snaps her attention back to him and opens her mouth before closing it again, looking at the trio; looking at Steve. “He’s comfortable-”
“Yeah I know that, I want to know what’s up with this other- whatever it is.” He snaps, crossing his arms, “that’s more- he’s been like this since we all got back.”
She nods, quickly looking over again before sitting next to him, “I think, he’s safe.”
“Of course he’s safe! We defeated Vecna!” He doesn’t snap, but it’s bitchy and Nancy rolls her eyes at him, before looking back at the trio.
“I mean, he feels safer now. As in, he’s not on guard all the time. He can lay there with his eyes closed, with no weapon or walkie within reach. He’s not only comfortable and safe, he’s- Steve’s happy” Nancy explains and looks at him, going to cross her arms before letting them fall again, “with the upside down behind us, all of us are okay and here- so Steve’s happy and safe”
It makes him blink, dropping his own arms before looking back at Steve. He’s got to be asleep now, with the way his foot isn’t moving now and how Eddie and Robin are also not moving.
“You’ve never actually seen him like this have you?”
He goes to nod, only to realize that, no; no he hasn’t.
Sure, Steve looked relaxed sitting on his couch but now that Dustin’s thinking about it, Steve was twitchy. That he had a leg bouncing and how he picked the one spot that has view of every part of the room. He knows that Steve keeps the nail bat in his car, that it goes inside with him at home and work.
And now that it’s in his head, Dustin can see all the ways Steve was and how Steve is now.
Steve is content and for the first time in years, he is safe.
~
Uh. This wasn’t supposed to go like this? I was going to make this a thing involving Eddie’s necklace but this came out instead 🤷‍♀️
for me there’s a major difference between content and comfortable. Like, you can be comfortable but still on the edge you know what I mean??? But when you’re content… it’s just better?? Idk what trying to say. ANYWAY!!! This is Dustin wanting Steve like this always and hoping to like bottle it up lol.
Also this takes place after spring break, they defeated Vecna. Like a few months after. It’s also pre-steddie, because of course it is.

steve and dustin’s relationship makes me so happy
Thinking about how the Hellfire Club would respond to them being friends because how the HELL did nerdy dnd player Dustin fucking Henderson become friends with the former king of Hawkins High, Steve “The Hair” Harrington? Because the last they knew of Steve, he was a jock, he threw parties in his giant mansion (that no one in Hellfire had ever been to) and he was just an all around asshole.
The first time Steve shows up in his fancy car (that was actually his fathers) wearing his preppy clothes and waiting in the parking lot, they assume he’s there to beat them up. Of course, they’re the freaks, the losers who don’t go to the basketball games and instead spend their time sitting in an empty classroom playing fantasy games. So what else would they expect?
When Dustin tells the club, “Oh, no he’s basically our mom he’s driving us home tonight”, they don’t believe him. They don’t know why he would be lying, but the people in the club who were at Hawkins High when The King was at the peak of his reign were honestly scared. They were at the bottom rung of the social ladder, if anyone was gonna bully anyone in Hawkins High, it would be the Hellfire Club. Although they were scared, they had formed some sort of bond with these 3 freshmen and they decided to walk out with them to the car. The kids leading the pack, Eddie, Gareth and Jeff slightly behind.
When they reach the car, the older kids try to get in front of the freshmen, but Mike and Lucas rush to Steve, each giving him a fist bump before Dustin reaches him and they perform an intricate handshake that has obviously been practiced a lot. The older kids can’t get exactly what’s happening, but they know there’s a lightsaber part and that it is a very complicated handshake that you wouldn’t learn for just anyone. Mike and Lucas fondly roll their eyes before getting into the backseat of Steve’s car, obviously having seen this same routine done before. Dustin laughs before getting in shotgun and Steve turns to Eddie. Eddie is dumbfounded, because whatever he was expecting Steve to do, it’s wasn’t this. As Steve turns to him and the rest of Hellfire, thanking them for giving the kids something to do that’s fun after school and sticking his hand out for Eddie to shake, Eddie can feel his old crush returning and he hopes he’ll see more of Steve soon.
