The thing I love about shipping thorin/bilbo or any of the dwarves together is that it canonically makes sense that some dwarves would have male significant others. I think it’s like 1/3 of all dwarves are female? That number may be wrong, but we defintely know dwarrodams are very hard to come by so like… why wouldn’t some of the dwarves be gay? At the very least due to “supply and demand” issues? Homophobia just does not logically make sense looking at dwarven culture.

Warnings: Alcohol, drunkenness, sexual references...

“Another round,” Nori called, his voice just a smidgen too loud and too fuzzy around the edges.

“Ya really shouldn’t,” Dwalin warned him, but when the innkeeper raised his eyebrows in his direction, he nodded his bald head twice in silent acquiescence, nonetheless.

He knew that he should have stopped his friend from overindulging, but Nori had a mind of his own—moreover, and Dwalin knew that this thought was much less selfless than he would have liked to believe—Nori got handsy whenever he had had enough to drink.

Better me than someone else, the burly dwarf tried to persuade himself of his own morality, another might not understand that Nori does not necessarily mean it when his nimble, skilled, and thieving hands slipped into pockets that were not his own.

Yes, he was merely trying to keep his friend from spending the night in a dilapidated dump or, worse, in a holding cell, awaiting their king’s disappointed indulgence.

“What are you brooding about? Is this not a wonderful evening?” Nori interrupted his thoughts, letting those hands Dwalin had been thinking about a little too often and too intensely travel down the broad, strong back of his drinking companion.

Dwalin nodded distractedly, but he was not entirely convinced of that though—the seductive smile of the tavern wench and the watered-down ale in fact did nothing to dispel the deep-seated insecurity roiling in his stomach.

They all knew that Nori was a slippery customer—he came and he went as he pleased and nobody thus far had ever tried to retain him, not even his brothers, so who was Dwalin to presume that he could change that?

“’was just wondering how we’ll get ya home,” he muttered, not entirely honest, and tensed as Nori’s right hand slipped under his tunic to trace the intricate tattoo he knew so well—Dwalin had fallen into the trap of giving in to Nori’s half-drunken proposals more than once.

Not tonight though—no, he’d bring his friend home and go back to his own chambers. He was too old and too tired to be taken for a fool.

Dwalin did not like to admit it but the awful feeling that had overcome him every time he had woken up alone after a night out with Nori was not anger or disappointment—it was hurt.

Of course, he had long since realised and accepted that he’d never be married and sire heirs for the kingdom, but he considered himself nonetheless worth more than a few sloppy kisses and hasty strokes in a haze of alcohol and fatigue.

“Ow,” Nori whined. “Does that mean you will not take me to your rooms? They’re much closer, you know?”

Already, his eyes had the wicked, mischievous sheen that a mixture of lust and ale always gave them and Dwalin averted his own to avoid being lulled into the magic of Nori’s magnetic charisma.

“Not tonight,” he said. Never again, he thought but he didn’t have the heart to speak the words and start a discussion he could not win, especially not when Nori’s tongue had been loosened by many a tankard of ale while his own was dry and heavy as lead.

“Why? Have I angered you?” Nori pushed away the half-full mug in front of him resolutely. “I can stop if it upsets you.”

Dwalin frowned; it was a ludicrous idea that he—a dwarf of standing and of rank—would be distressed by the sight or the company of a drunken friend.

“What is the matter, sweetling?” Modulating his tone until it dripped like poisoned honey into Dwalin’s befuddled mind, Nori slid closer, never extricating his hand from under the guard’s garments. “You seem more sullen than usual—do I have to worry?”

“What would you worry about?” Dwalin asked morosely—he was sure that the thoughts of inadequacy that plagued him had never once occurred to his friend. Nori was so terribly confident in the amorous domain, another thing that made Dwalin—a fighter rather than a lover—slightly uncomfortable and insecure at times.

“Oh you sweet, old badger,” Nori purred. “I see it is high time I leave behind the jolly tavern and the cool ale to tend to you. Won’t you tell me what upsets you so?”

“You’re having me on,” Dwalin grumbled, turning away to get out from under that lovingly caressing and cruelly teasing hand. “I am tired of the games.”

The bone-deep weariness in his tone made Nori sit up straighter as the sobering effect of a nameless fear crept up his spine. “What are you talking about, mate?”

“You’ll come to mine, we’ll fool around, and then I wake up alone,” Dwalin whispered in an urgent hiss. “I am growing too old for that kind of foolishness.”

Nori cocked his head, a few strands of fiery hair falling seductively into his handsomely flushed face, casting enchanting and enigmatic shadows across his deceivingly open mien. “What part do you object to? Me coming by or you waking up alone? One, we can easily amend but the other, I am afraid I am unwilling to give up without a fight."

When Dwalin merely pursed his lips in a bout of his famous taciturnity, Nori sighed deeply. “I love you, you know that, right? I love you for all the ways you let me be myself and I am really sorry if you thought I didn’t just because I am not the kind to leave flowers behind. Anyway, you’d go ask every florist around if I had stolen the bouquet.”

“You’re drunk.”

“Aye,” Nori giggled. “Fools, children, and drunkards are said to speak pure truth. As I am all three of those, you can trust me. You do trust me, don’t you?”

“About as far as I can throw you,” Dwalin grunted, but his eyes grew soft. “Let’s go home you childish, inebriate fool. I am willing to give you another chance—tomorrow morning, you’re either there to repeat these words to me stone-cold sober…or you’re not.”

“Hmmm, Fundinson,” Nori laughed, slinging his arms enthusiastically around the thick neck of his drinking companion. “I’ve never taken you for a betting man, but damn, I accept the challenge.”

“What do I win then?” Dwalin grinned, mellowed by the astonishing turn of the conversation.

“Me, of course, and…we’ll see then. You think that you’re going to win, so you do trust me. That’s all I need to know.” Swaying slightly, he poured his ale onto the ground without the slightest hint of hesitation. “May Mahal take the ale, I’ll take you.”

Long time no see, ey? Well, I'm back... at least for now, but I'm very excited to deliver this rec list! You all know that I'm a sucker for Barduil and Thilbo, but gigolas just hits different ya know? I tried to assemble a list of fandom classics as well as some lesser known ones that you really need to check out.

I Walked with You (Once Upon a Dream) by The_Dwelf

Kori is just a regular Dwarf, except, he isn't. He is Gimli's reicarnation, he has been dreaming of his past life since he was a child, and now that he's old enough to leave Erebor, he's certain of his condition. With unexpected help from a very shocked Elvenking, he will find a way to rejoin Legolas, at any costs. Angst, fluff, porn and (spoiler?) a happy ending. 

Notes: I would call this fic a lesser known classic. I've read it more than once (I've read most of these more than once) and it never fails to entertain. Maybe it's not my absolute favorite, but it's definitely a must read.

On the Origin of Half-Elves by Lumeleo

Legolas has found his mate, but that doesn't always guarantee happiness. Especially not when his dwarf still holds a grudge over old insults.

Of course, even when they start to get along, things aren't necessarily easy when rumours from the Misty Mountains make Legolas ride out to look for his lost brother... and ends up with a party of dwarves following him, because you can't ever have just one dwarf.

Now if only he can get through the adventure without any angry relatives taking an axe to his vulnerable parts.

Notes: This story is sweet. I really like Legolas and Gimli's relationship, but if I'm being honest I typically read it for the other (if you've read it you know the one I mean) relationship. Love this fic a lot (as well as the series that it folds into).

We Who Are Forever by WerewolvesAreReal

There is an elf who has lived in Aglarond for nigh on five hundred years before Grilka's birth. He stays always near the inner caverns and the halls of dead dwarf-lords, and the younger dwarrows know him for his songs and sad stories, his queer habit of walking the caverns in twilit sleep and speaking to the ferns that grow by the inner ponds.

Grilka likes talking to the elf, despite his grief. Somehow it feels like talking to an old friend.

Notes: This one is similar to the first one, but I like how the ending feels different and unique. These sorts of fics always leave me in so much pain, but only the good kind of course.

The Pirates of Erebor by mckittericks

The pirates of Erebor have long troubled the isle of Greenwood, but when they kidnap an elven lady for ransom, they don't get exactly what, or rather who, they bargained for.

Notes: I'm an intense sucker for a good pirate fic. While the style of this fic means that I'm not constantly rereading it, it's lovely to pick up again and relearn about this different world and its twists and turns.

A Nest for Birds to Sit and Sing by plinys

Within hours of arriving that camp, a hierarchy had sorted itself out among the troops, one that put Gimli’s troop near the bottom of the list and Troop 5126 at the top, though that was mostly because they had high-tech GPS’s and went to some fancy prep school that celebrities sent their kids too.

Notes: This one isn't romantic at all, but the innocence of their relationship is adorable, and makes you wonder what came after for them both.

Notes: It wasn't on purpose that these two were back to back, but they are almost the exact opposite from each other, and it's more than a little ironic. Still, I adore this fic and all it has to offer, I hope you read it cause it's lovely.

Notes: This one and the next one might have to be my favorites, although I'm struggling to decide between them. Either way this fic is amazing and I have nothing but good things to say.

Hearts Will As Hearts Must by determamfidd

The Dwarves are returning to Erebor reclaimed, and the elves uphold their promise to safeguard the caravans as they pass through Mirkwood.

One particular Dwarf has wit and spark enough to match Legolas Greenleaf - perhaps even outmatch him.

It's hate at first sight.

Notes: This fic is just... I can't with it, it's lovely and I adore it so very much, like you have no idea how much I love it. If you haven't read it (what are you doing???) drop everything you're doing and read it. I swear you won't regret it.

i listened to first time by hozier on a loop for 2 hours of my work shift today and it supplied me with this general au thwt i can’t stop thinking about:

- dwalin, as an architect and and a budging scholar, reserved and boding but in a calm way, and nori; a budging carving master- a dwarf on the cusp of foundation if you will, thought dwalin.

- the back and forth between the two in hidden moments and inside jokes in the halls of scholars.

- then the dragon came.

- the dragon, who brought naught but flames and fire and hell. dwalin remembers diving desperately to his left, aiming for his king but also grabbling for his love and tightened his grasp as one would a viper. nori; beautiful brave nori held on like a badger poised to attack, begging for the chance of retribution.

- and his hands settled on nori’s so softly he could barely feel the clammy surface beneath. and nori’s mind will not allow him to sleep until the depths of the night, until he sees the flames, and his hands dropping their scrolls like pigeon dung.

- we all live in fear of becoming our predecessors; it’s the curse of youthful genuineness.

- nori disappears not long after, around the time that Ori’s cheeks start to hollow and Dori’s temperament starts to diminish

- dwalin doesn’t get blessed with the sight of his beloved until he is witnessing him being shoved against a brick wall, the rough surface etching unforgivable grazes into his skin and

- and his eyes meet dwalin’s and they…they drop in shame and resignation and dwalin’s soul

- it burns

So to say the least I am ever so bored and looking to get some new roleplays up and running. First off the very most important thing to know about me is I'm 25 the name is Indy (she/They) coming to you from the Cringy One Direction Roleplay era. Adventures in Prince Sitting by Lumelo

Looking after your nephew for half a day isn't that big of a deal, really. Except when said nephew happens to be a prince of Durin's line, second in line to the throne, and really quite the destructive little beast for something that's only known how to walk for a few months. His Highness is lucky he's cute, really.

Nori really isn't sure why Ori thinks he can handle a baby. Fortunately, he can always make Dwalin help him, or else.

Notes: Nwalin focused, with a side of Fiori and Thilbo. I can't ever decide if I like Dwalin/Nori or Dwalin/Ori more. Maybe we should have a vote... But either way, I love this fic, especially since it highlights two characters that don't typically get the limelight (also baby dwarrow).

Trouble with Faces by Resacon1990

“It’s got such a presence to it, even from a distance,” Bilbo says softly, and there’s a general murmur of awed agreement from the others. “Why, in all my fifty years, I never thought I’d see such a thing, and we haven’t even arrived yet!”

Thorin’s sword hits the ground with a clatter, and Balin chokes on his pipe. 

The hobbit doesn’t look at Thorin, too busy thumping Balin on the back. Once the dwarf seems able to breathe again, he looks up, to find thirteen wide pairs of eyes fixed on him. 

“What?” he says defensively, though he’s not sure what he’s defending.

“You’re how old?” Kíli squeaks. 

Bilbo frowns at the young dwarf. “I’m fifty years old. Well, fifty-one, come springtime. Though it is not very polite to ask someone their age so bluntly,” he tells him primly. 

Fíli makes a choked sound, and Nori lets out a vicious string of swears in Khuzdul.

Notes: CLASSIC ALERT. All I can really say about this fic is that if you haven't read it, that's a crime, and you must. This fic is a gen-you-ine staple, and I adore it. Thilbo.

All That Shine as Moonstone Leave a Discernible Mark by kay_cricketed

Notes: This one's simultaneously funny and saddd. All the feels, especially the faith Thorin has in Bilbo (this is Thilbo btw). Everything ends up fine, but it still destroys me.

To Choose a Consort by Thevaen

''You really ought to look more interested, or at least pretend.'' Bilbo started, giving the Dwarf a slap against his arm at the look he received. ''And stop being such a child.'' Thorin smiled. ''They don't know me the way you do.'' A flutter exploded in the Hobbit's chest at the words. ''I doubt if there's anyone who is quite so skilled at interpreting expressions as you Master Baggins.''

Thorin had to choose a consort. He knew that, and he also knew he didn't want a consort that was not the Hobbit. He doesn't, and instead stubbornly waits for a sign that the Hobbit himself would be willing to be such. Bilbo in turn, knew he was more than a little envious of those that got the chance to present themselves in front of the Dwarven King, and that he was more than a little relieved when time after time, they were kindly rejected. It had been many years since Bilbo had seen his Dwarves. Driven by his loneliness and nostalgia, one night he decided to re-read the contract he had signed so many years ago, hoping to find catharsis. Instead, what he found was burning rage at all the ridiculous clauses the Dwarves had slipped in without his notice. In the end, Bilbo knew there was only one thing to do. He would travel to Erebor, and have very specific words with the King.
