First character design reveals are out for the anime adaptation of Plus-Sized Elf / Elf-San Can't Diet / Elf-San wa Yaserarenai. One of the characters, Oga-san (an ogre) has extremely strong maternal instincts. She tries to adopt child-sized characters on more than one occasion.

Possibly not understanding AmericanEnglish vernacular, the animators have decided to indicate this portion of her personality in what turns out to be the funniest way possible.

Gratuitous English: Gunsmoke is an explicitly English-speaking world, so this abounds. Unfortunately, Nightow's English skills are less than perfect (and the anime had Engrish abound). The second episode shows us a flier for a "BODYGARD" who is a "CREAT SHOOTER LIKE VASH THE STANPEAT". There's also a sign that says "COFFE & RESTLANT!!" in Episode 5. When Vash uses the computer in Episode 26, it says "Searth Target, All People Relate to Lem Sayblam". In the manga, there's one instance where there's a container of salt labeled "solt". The Quickdraw application in the eponymous episode is pretty legible, though. Maybe Wolfwood is just a better-than-average speller? The whiskey labels are very faithful reproductions of actual brands… except for "Dim Deam", though that may be an intentional Brand X-ing of Jim Beam. And of course, "LOVE AND PEASU!"

Am I the only one who has taken the messed-up English of Trigun - no doubt just the crew trying to create an English-speaking world, and mentally / fan handwaved it (as a native American-English speaking fan) as "Of COURSE it would be that way! This story takes place centuries into the future!" As in, yes, it makes perfect sense to me that people call them "Restlants" now and use "solt!" If you look back into history, things in the same language 100-200-300 years ago were not the same. Everyone who's had to plough through reading Shakespeare plays knows this. I read The Pilgrim's Progress as a very book-nerd teenager. That was a whole other country. I enjoy watching Tasting History with Max Miller on Youtube and I've even made some of the foods he's featured. Whenever he delves into an Old English or Old American recipe and reads the original print from an archive it's interesting how things are different ("plums" being what we'd call raisins and sometimes currants, for instance) and the delightful phrase "serve it forth." What are surely little mistakes in '98 Trigun, for me, become a part of the worldbuilding! OF COURSE language evolved! Hell, in the manga-universe, where the Earth forces come, I wouldn't be surprised if there's dialect differences between whatever Earth-English evolved into and whatever Gunsmokeans / Nomanslanders are using!

It was interesting to observe how, over the years, Japanese video game advertising and packaging began to display an increasing amount of its written messaging in the English language. If you inspect the average Famicom, SG-1000 or MSX game case from the 1980s, it’s probable that the only Romaji to be found is circumscribed to logotypes and little else. For reasons that can hardly be summarized, speaking English has long been considered fashionable and distinct in Japan. As the market became more competitive, companies were forced to find even the smallest edge over their rivals, leading to expanded investment in advertising. SEGA was among the first adopt the foreign language in the design of its printed materials, seemingly in an attempt to have their products exude an aura of sophistication and modernity, although with varied results. While there was certainly an effort to ensure proper spell-checking - by no means a given at the time - I deem the above examples to be quite telling of how different a time the 1990s were. At a glance, the phrasing comes across as slightly unnatural. Sentences are peculiarly placed. More importantly, the message being conveyed does not match the expectations of what large corporation would choose to print on the all-important real-estate that is a console’s cardboard box, or the face of a game disc. It is hard not to see them today as relics of inestimable value pertaining to a simpler, faraway era.

Megazone 23, part 3 (first half)

All of the text being hand-written is so endearing. There was a screencap I didn't include here where RPOBABILTIY OF DEATH 98%, and I can't even blame them, touch typing muscle memory do be like that sometimes. Anyways, my highlights:

Screencap 1: The total gibberish of these numbered and bulleted steps

Screencap 2: TILITY PROGRAM. U- is a prefix, who knew

Screencaps 3 and 4: from ARER 71 to ARIA 70. These two frames happened right after one another.

Screencap 5: These people can spell annihilation, but not cler [sic]

Screencap 6: UNTILL NOW, Hard On Geometry Space Attack Advice, but what really gets the chuckle from me is Cyber System A General Idea.

Screencap 7: The subtitle of the audio contrasted against the text. Lol.

Screencap 8: MISSAIL happens on a myriad of screens in this, which only makes it even more hilarious when I did eventually find a screen where not only were missile and probability spelled correctly, but "loading" was mangled into "loadimp"

Not included here: a cap where half of the letters in "energy" were upside down for Reasons.
