2 Weeks Before Finals
“I knew it! I knew gods were real! And now one needs your help. This is the most amazing thing to happen in the history of forever. I mean can you beli—What are you doing?” Ruby’s head turned to Lex, where she saw her flipping through something in her periphery. “Why are you studying?”
“Finals are in two weeks Ruby.” In all honestly, Lex was just scanning the pages and hoping that the information would be absorbed. She was too busy thinking about the golden goddess and her message.
“You have been chosen as an Advocate by the gods of Wakanda…”
“Who cares about finals! A goddess just appeared in our living room Lex! With a freaking quest.” By the time she finished speaking, her voice was nothing but a squeak.
“She didn’t say it was a quest Ru.” She said her nephew needed help. Do gods even have nephews? Weren’t they all born out of clay and shit?
“Ertumke, the god of Predator and Prey requests your assistance in a Trial to be held…”
“Fine a task. Maybe even a favor! You can’t ignore a goddess Lex!” Lex slammed the book shut, mostly to stop replaying the scene in her head, but also to scare Ruby into shutting up. Just a little. It was a moot point either way. The chance of that happening after tonight are about as slim as having a goddess appear in your apartment while you’re dripping wet in a towel.
“Do you really believe a goddess just popped by our apartment? I mean seriously Ruby, maybe there was something in our cereal this morning or the smog is—” Ruby’s mouth dropped open in shock, brows scrunched together.
“Lex, you cannot be serious. We don’t even live in a city! There is no smog!”
“You don’t have to live in a city for smog to—”
“Say smog one more time. I dare you.” Ruby looked like she meant it, and after the day I’d just had, I wasn’t interested in whatever payback she was thinking about delivering if I took her up on the dare. “Lex, we just saw a goddess in our apartment and you think it was what? Some weird cereal trip? You don’t even eat cereal!” Ruby’s tone had gone from placating to disbelieving in a sentence, but Lex brushed it off, determined to forget anything happened at all.
“You offered food and drink to an animal he holds sacred. You have initiated a connection…”
“Fine it was a mass hallucination.” Lex waved her hand like the idea of hallucinating at all didn’t send shivers down her spine. Drugs were never her forte.
“There’s only two of us.”
“Then we’re both crazy!” Ruby rolled her eyes so hard she knew she’d have a headache. “Ruby, finals are in two weeks. I am not wasting four years and a shit-ton of student debt for any God.”
“Lex, a Wakandan god just asked you to be their Advocate. That shit only happens in legends. Legends that I’ve studied Lex. There’s no way that this is just som—” Lex could see that Ruby wasn’t going to let this go. They’d been through this before. Well not this exactly, but Ruby had spent all of sophomore year trying to convince Lex that fairies were absolutely real. They still don’t agree and Ruby didn’t speak to her for about a week when Lex had blown her off in the middle of some ‘documentary’ about it.
“Ruby I’m tired. I’m going to bed.” Lex turned on her heel and took the few steps she needed to get into her room. It was early still, the sun only now starting to set, but Lex got in bed anyway. She didn’t want to think about the golden woman and her request. Didn’t want to think that she just might have the life of a god in her hands.

“The rest is up to you nephew.”
That’s all his dear Auntie gave him. Sure she’d gone and told the girl about being an Advocate, but his chosen advocate didn’t seem all too impressed. Apparently, all she’d done was politely shake her head and promise this is the only time she’d speak to a hallucination before asking Ramonda to leave. What kind of mortal asks a god to leave?
“You’re pacing cousin.” Erik jumped. Trust Shuri to sneak up on him.
“Wouldn’t you be? I assume you heard about my Advocate?” Erik’s voice bordered on contemptuous. Shuri’s brow rose. “She doesn’t even believe in Gods Shu! She thought your own mother was a hallucination.” Shuri snorted at this.
“I know you find this hard to believe cousin, but not every mortal dreams of being visited by gods, especially not now a days. Their gods are much closer than we ever were.” Erik snorted at this. He’d heard of the humans now, dropping their worship of true gods to bow at the feet of musicians, writers, and liars (actors, if you ask anyone else). “You’ll just have to keep working at it. I’m sure you’ll think of something soon enough, you’re mildly clever.”
Shuri disappeared in a metallic flash and Erik did his best not to sniff at her exit. The least she could do was be helpful if she planned on visiting. He couldn’t even be sure why she bothered to come if all she wanted to do was judge his ineptitude to convince one mortal to—
Erik huffed a laugh. Of course, mortals don’t dream of gods. At least, they haven’t in centuries. Erik would have to change that. Leave it to Shuri to inspire and berate him. He knocked on the glass of his cell and shut his eyes.

Much to her surprise, Lex found sleep, but not rest. Her dreams were filled with silent lambs, rotting fruit and outstretched palms. Whether they were offering or reaching, she couldn’t tell, but she knew the dreams were strange. It was as though she was watching the images on a screen, somewhere else, far away.
The air was cold and there was complete and total silence. Like someone had reached delicate fingers into her mind and pulled the aux cord. Just as the silence veered from strange to alarming, she heard the rush of a wave coming towards her from somewhere overhead. Lex hurriedly gasped a breath and closed her eyes. Seconds, minutes, hours could have passed, but when she blinked her eyes open, she released a relieved gust of air.
She was in her bathtub, soaking in warm, black water and shrouded in steam. Silver orbs dotted the water, glinting when she looked closer, so instead of looking, Lex closed her eyes. She could hear waves lapping at a shoreline she’d probably never see, and soft padding footsteps. Like a cat, a big cat. Lex pulled her eyes open, turning her head towards the sound.
A woman appeared, at least, she seemed to be a woman. She was an obsidian Venus, voluptuous and gleaming. The world seemed to bend around her, pulling the stars above to her head like a crown and the night blue sky wrapping around her like a second skin and rich earthen soil guiding her feet along. Or maybe she was the world, or at least the night. Silver starlight dotted the darkness of her form like moles and her face was all too brilliant and beautiful that Lex had to blink and blink and blink to actually get a sense of what her face looked like at all. She didn’t get much.
The black Venus leaned into Lex’s space, resting her face so closely to Lex that she could feel her slow, measured breaths in time with the waves crashing on that unseen shore.
“Advocate, your God would like to speak to you…” She didn’t so much say the words as she breathed them out. Her lips barely moved but Lex could feel the woman’s words drifting through her ears. Before Lex could marvel at the woman any longer, she was gone.
The sounds of the waves was abruptly replaced by howling winds and heat. Blinking, Lex looked around and found miles and miles of sand. Perfect dunes of blood red sand. She sank deeper into the tub, the water cool enough to anchor her in this heat. Before she knew it, the sounds of the windy desert were lulling her into a calm she’d never felt before.
“So you’re the Advocate my family is so excited about.” Lex jumped, sitting upright so fast that the inky black water sloshed over the tub and sizzled on the sand. She could hear footprints in the sand, circling the tub, but when she glanced to her left and right, there was only desert air. “Not very talkative, but I suppose I can see the appeal.”
Lex wrinkled her brow and opened her mouth to say…something, but between once breathe and the next, a man appeared at the foot of the tub, brown arms crossed and smirking.
“What the fuck!” The man kissed his teeth, brows lifted in surprise and maybe a hint of mirth. Lex didn’t know the…whatever this guy was well enough to figure it out. She did know however, that she was naked in this tub.
“Hmm, I would have thought you’d have better manners considering my cousin picked you out.”
“You’re one to talk about manners.” Lex leaned forward in the tub, shifting to her knees and exposing her back instead of her chest. “Who the hell are you?”
“You really can’t guess?” The man seemed annoyed by this and continued on as though this entire conversation was a chore. “I’m Ertumke, and you’re my Advocate.”
*^*
“What did you say he looked like again?”
“Ruby!” Lex had been explaining her dream to Ruby all morning. Ruby had clearly been listening selectively.
“What? He sounds hot.”
“This is not helping.” And it wasn’t. It really really wasn’t, especially because after her dream, Lex woke up…wet, like she’d been dumped from the tub in her dreams right onto her bed. “He said his name is Ertumke and he seems like an asshole. Have you studied any gods like that?” Ruby snorted and rolled her eyes.
“Plenty.” Lex groaned. “He really didn’t say anything else? Nothing about your quest—” At Lex’s withering look Ruby stopped short. “I mean your…mission?”
“He told me his name like it was supposed to mean something, leered at me in the tub and condescended to me so hard I thought about breaking his nose.” I woke up before I could make that happen, but my annoyance lingered.
“Yikes.”
“On the off chance that this is actually happening and I just met a god in my dreams,” Lex huffed “I want it on record that I do not plan on helping him at all. I never agreed to be an Advocate and I sure as shit ain’t helping that dickhead.” Ruby winced like the dickhead in question could hear me, but nodded.
“That’s fair, but honestly…You’re gonna be hard pressed to find a god that isn’t an asshole if my nearly finished mythology degree is anything to go off of.” Lex groaned again.
*^*
Lex couldn’t focus. She’d been at the campus’s largest library for three hours, and all she’d accomplished was color coding her notes. She hadn’t read a word of them. All she could think about was that dream. That stupid, weird, distracting dream. Well, she also couldn’t stop thinking about the text Ruby had sent her with a link to…well she didn’t quite know what the link was for yet, but Ruby’s message had made it clear that it was about the god from her dreams and Lex was trying to establish boundaries about this. Specifically boundaries that would encourage her to write the last few days off to exhaustion and go back to her super, super normal life.
It wasn’t working.
After another 15 minutes of staring at her computer screen, she caved and clicked the link. Oh great, while lex was doing everything she could to forget about the god in her dreams, Ruby had pulled everything she knew about the god in her dreams and delivered it to her in a very organized, perfectly color coded google doc. Perfect.
Ruby might be the most vocal in the necessity of taking a break from studying, but when it came to her work, she was nothing if not thorough. The document itself was about 30 pages with a hefty table of contents, blue links dotting the pages and a bibliography to boot. I recognized some of the books she’d cited because they were often strewn about our dorm. Ruby was not messing around on this. To start, I skipped straight to the section about the ‘Advocate Tradition’, Ruby clearly wanted me to start with the gods themselves, but I couldn’t, didn’t want to think about that. Not yet.
“The gods are not particularly known to be fair to mortals, but amongst their own kind, they make an effort. No god truly wants to see the ichor of another dripping down the hilt of their incabuka, no matter the strength of their anger. To prevent this, and any loss of godly life, the Elders created a system of judgement. A trial of sorts, more of a tribunal would be held against the offending party. They would be required to stand in front of the elders and hear of the grievances of the gods, but they would not be permitted to speak, the gods are persuasive, even to their own kind, and so the Elders decided that an Advocate, a mortal must be the mouth of the god on trial. It was only fair, mortals may be able to sway one another with pretty words, but a mortal mouth can’t do much against a group of gods and certainly not the Elders. No, this was fair, putting the life of an accused god in the hands of a mortal the Elders thought. Very fair. ” — African Gods and Legends, p.72, 1978, Zuri Kahandu
Lex sighed and cracked open a new tab.
*^*
From what Lex could find, the God Ertumke was totally a dick. He had been given his dominion over Predator and Prey to curb his trickery. Trickery that apparently got his cousin cut in half (the effect easily reversed with a spell from the Queen Mother, whoever that is), flooded an entire country with snakes stolen from another (not easily reversed, but part of his punishment was to cull the population in their new country) and even stopped the birth of new lambs for a decade after being offended by a mortal daring to question his power.
Total dick.
Still, Lex had to admit she was curious. What could he possibly have done now that warranted a trial if none of his previous stunts had?
“Oh good, you’re still here!” Ruby plopped into the chair across from her, slightly sweaty but managing to look glowy. She tossed a book into Lex’s arms, and the colorful tabs on the side flashed in the library light. “I brought you some reading.” Lex turned over the book, noting the gilded symbols on the cover and a title in a language she couldn’t read.
“Um…thanks?”
“It’s about Ertumke, or well, his pantheon of gods.” Lex narrowed her eyes at Ruby and she raised her hands placatingly. “I know you said you wouldn’t be his Advocate, this is just incase you change your mind.” Lex’s shoulder’s dropped with a sigh. She still wasn’t sure about any of this, but something pushed her to keep learning. She’d tried to stop it after the whole ‘goddess in our living room’ crap because she knew an obsession when she saw one, and Lex simply did not have time for a new obsession.
“Can you give me the Cliff’s Notes?” Ruby squealed so loud that the librarian left her desk to give them a dirty look.
*^*
Night fell over campus like a blanket, tucking the smarter students in and allowing the careless partygoers to don it like a cape. Lex and Ruby arrived at their place laden with gas station snacks, entirely too much fried chicken for two people and melted brains. They’d spent hours pouring over the book Ruby had brought, the websites Lex had found, and a few more reference books from the library. Lex had come to the conclusion that the gods, in all their omnipotence, were actually absolutely ridiculous and lowkey too sensitive to have all that power.
She and Ruby were cackling about how Gods reacted to “slights” from mortals as they pushed through the door and dropped everything onto the coffee table in front of the couch.
“And the god…what’s his name? W’Kamte? When he built a giant anthill on the home of some human who said ants weren’t as cool as snakes. I mean come on, could you be more ridiculous?” The girls fell back onto the couch, giggling.
“I agree, W’Kamte always has had a flair for the weird.” Breathless, the girls looked at each other. The voice that had shared that tidbit wasn’t theirs. It was light, with a musical lilt. Lex might even call it playful and Ruby definitely would. The two sat in silence for a moment, and between one breath and the next a golden figure shimmered into existence. And then another. And another.
“Do you see three golden figures in our living room?” Ruby whispered to Lex.
“Unfortunately.” The first figure laughed like a song, and for a moment Lex wondered if this is what every church choir in existence had tried to replicate. A soft and melodious sound that swept you away for just a moment, making you think you’d heard just a bit of heaven in those notes.
“I like you! Mother, you chose well for Ertumke.” The second figure looked more familiar now, taller than the first and exuding some sort of energy that made you want to ask for motherly advice. The figure only nodded towards Lex as the first figure hopped, literally hopped in front of Lex.
For all Lex didn’t want to believe this was happening, she felt the heat coming from the figure as it leaned into her face. Her eyes burned as she tried to keep her eyes on the figure invading her space, blinking rapidly when the figure finally leaned back with a sigh.
“You don’t have to believe in us to be an Advocate.” The figure said this casually, and it brought Lex up short. “We still need you. My cousin, he needs you.” There was something in the figure’s voice now. On any mortal, Lex supposed it would sound like pleading, but in the mouth of this god, it was imploring.
“From what I’ve read, your cousin is a dick.” The third figure, taller than the rest, snorted. The sound was deep and tiredly amused. The first figure nodded and waved an arm.
“Be that as it may, he needs an Advocate. He needs you.” Lex looked to Ruby for some kind of confirmation that what was happening right now was crazy. Ruby’s gaze was locked on the golden figures in the room. “My cousin is not particularly noble, or honorable, or moral by the standards of a mortal, but he is loyal. He has defended my family, our lands, and the lands of his allies for millennia. He is unwavering in his fealty and he deserves the same from us.” The second figure nodded again, though begrudgingly this time. The third figure took a step towards me before speaking.
“Ertumke is being blamed for a crime even the Elders will not explain.” The figure paused for a breath, though Lex had the sneaking suspicion that he didn’t need it. “That alone is concerning, but considering the rest of the…upsets happening in our realm, this case, Ertumke’s need for an Advocate…It’s…worrisome. I do not like to see my cousin in chains and I do not trust the Elders to pass judgement, not now. Not—” Before the figure could finish, the lights in the room blinked into darkness. The figures no longer glowed gold, but flickered to a steaming silver. Lex didn’t dare breathe, but she had a feeling she wouldn’t find air in the room if she tried.
The second figure put a hand over the third’s arm. Restraining him? Soothing him? Lex couldn’t decide and let the thought drop as the second figure spoke.
“Watch how you speak of the Elders my son. Remember that they are the makers of our world. Of us.” And with those words our light flicked back on. The silver figures burned gold again and a wave of unrelenting heat rolled over the room. Only for a minute, but enough for Lex to know that the Elders were not to be fucked with.
“I’m sure you know by now that we cannot reveal our true identities to you, but we can help you, should you chose to become Ertumke’s Advocate.” The second figure said this calmly, but Lex could see the tension in the figure’s shoulders. In fact, she could feel the tension sloughing off of all the figures like a slow avalanche. It hit her then, that this was real. Mass hallucinations and sleep deprivation couldn’t create a tension this palpable. Ertumke’s family clearly loved him, knew he was deserving of that love, and now…now they were going to the mat for him. And Lex was their secret weapon. Oh God. Gods? Shit. Lex released a sigh before she spoke.
“Tell me everything you can.” And they did. They told her about the worst things Ertumke has done, the murders and the creations he’s borne. They told her about the battles breaking out in their realm, spreading like a sticky spiders web. They told her about the Godsickness that appeared, leaving the strongest of their pantheon leaking ichor and magic and power. They told her about the worst of it, and then they left. Faded into mist leaving Lex and Ruby to blink the gold out of their eyes. The two girls sat in silence as the moon rose and fell, and when they finally breathed in the reality of their apartment air, cold fried chicken and the strong honeyed scent left by those golden gods they turned to each other.
“You know, the leasing agent should have told us that this apartment was a beacon for Gods.”
“Ruby!” Lex tried to sound indignant, but she couldn’t stop the laughter that bubbled up, and if it was a little hysterical, Ruby wasn’t the type to judge.

A/N: Let’s all pretend I didn’t leave this story alone for two years. Cool? Great! I hope y'all are doing well! Life punched me in the face, helped me back up and then dropkicked me and I didn’t have the capacity to write.
My goal is to finish this story before the end of the year, so if you’re still reading this, thanks for sticking around and I hope to give you an ending you’ll love!
As I said before, I’ve had this idea rolling around in my head for a year and some change now (I think), and I was inspired by Champion by killmongersgurl.

Pairing: Erik Killmonger x Black!Reader

Word Count: I have no clue....SIKE, it’s 1.6k...I lied. I don’t know the count. I’m sorry 😔
Tumblr media
Erik ‘Killmonger’ Steven was not what you had in mind when it came to dating. He was mean, sold drugs, barely cared for anyone’s existence minus his own, and he ran through chicks like they were fucking laps. So, when it came to your attention that he was tryna pull you, you immediately shut it down. You weren’t tryna be another notch his belt, not did you want to deal with the females that were still obsessing over him even after he left them high and dry.
Anytime he was around you, you made it a point to not have a conversation with him. If you couldn’t avoid him and HAD to talk to him you kept your answers short. You basically set a ban on being around Erik in your family, to which your little sister did not adhere to. Which is why you found yourself here, walking towards Erik surrounded by a group of kids.
As you neared them the chatter amongst him and the kids became more clear. He was talking to them about how important school was. “Listen, little man. I know you don’t like doing your homework but what do you think is gonna happen when you don’t do it?” The boy he was talking to shrugged and Erik chuckled. “You’re not gonna get any girls. Girls don’t like lazy dummies. Ain’t that right, ladies?” The little girls around him hummed in agreement. “See?” The boy nodded and ran back to his mom, a few dollars in his hands.
“Melanie!” You called out and your sister ran to you, wrapping her arms around your legs in a tight hug. You smiled softly and rubbed her back as she looked up at you. “How was school?” You spoke and she grimaced, a pout on her lips. “It was okay, they didn’t have pizza boats for lunch though.” You laughed to yourself and grabbed her hand. “Well, I just went to the store. When we get in the house you start on your homework and I’ll whip up a pizza boat for you. Sound good?” Your sister squealed excitedly, nodding her head as she bounced beside you.
“Aye, Y/N!” You turned around, regretting it immediately. You groaned, rolling your eyes as Erik waves bye to the kids and jogged his way over to you. You pulled Melanie closer to your side as he got closer. “Hey, Y/N. Mel, You look pretty today.” Erik spoke and your sister giggled, hiding her face in your leg as she mumbled out a shy “Thank you.” Erik’s smiles brightly while his eyes traveled up to meet yours. “So, do you, Y/N.”
You nodded curtly. “Thanks, Erik. That’s all you wanted?” Erik chuckled, stuffing his hands in his pockets while shaking his head. “Oh, nah! I wanted to know if I could...take you out sometime? Tomorrow night if you’re free?” He bit his lip, never breaking eye contact. You rolled your eyes, causing Erik to chuckle. “Erik...” he cut you off and grabbed your hand, rubbing his thumb over the back of it.
“Come on, let me take you out once! Just one time. And if you hate it, I’ll never bother you again. Give a nigga a shot, at least.” He joked and you looked at him, tilting your head. Your little sister looked between the two of you before deciding for you. “She’ll be ready by 7!” She exclaimed and you looked down at her, eyes wide. Erik licked his lips and nodded. “I’ll see you tomorrow, at 7.” He winked as he backed away before turning and jogging back to his car.
You looked down at Melanie. “Really?” She shrugged and pulled you along. “You were taking too long, plus you were gonna way yes anyway.” You laughed softly. “You know what, just for that. You only get one pizza boat.”
“Nooooooo!”
—————
Safe to say your date went a lot better than you thought. He took you to the beach and the two of you had a picnic. You talked, laughed, it was amazing. He talked about his family, his father especially. You got to see a side of Erik not many people do. He was vulnerable, open, and he seemed to be okay with it.
From then on, you and him became closer. He would walk your little sister home from the bus stop. He’d stand on the porch, talk to you and your grandmother. He would sometimes stay for dinner, if he couldn’t he’d promise to come back Sunday and have dinner. He never left without kissing your cheek, hugging your grandmother and fist bumping your sister.
Your grandmother immediately loved him. Which is surprising, considering her distaste for the gangbangers and dealers around the neighborhood. However, in her words, “He doesn’t do it for power, he does it to help.” Your little sister LOVED Erik. There wouldn’t be a day that went by where she didn’t ask to talk to Erik on the phone.
He adored her just as much though, always having something for her when she got off the bus. Most of the time it was chocolate, except her birthday he gave her a bracelet with her name engraved in it. She never took it off.
Your love for Erik grew with each passing day, slowly but surely. He would do little things for you. If you offhandedly mentioned you needed to go grocery shopping he’ll be there the next day, ready to go shopping with you. He always paid for everything. If you were out together and he noticed you getting grumpy he’d make a detour to your favorite food spot. Your mood always improved.
Sometimes you’d catch Erik staring, like when you were riding in Convertible, the wind blowing through your tresses ever so freely. He would stare and you scold him. “Keep your eyes on the road.”
Today, however, was one of the few days where neither you nor Erik were busy. You both had the day to yourself, your sister and grandmother had went out for the day and Erik didn’t have to oversee anything so the both of you laid on the hood his car, intertwined in one another.
His fingers lightly glided over your bare arms as the two of you looked out over the sunset. Erik had picked you up and taken you to a secluded hill. He had a pension for taking you out on picnics, knowing you loved simple and thoughtful dates. He brought a blanket, some pizza, snacks, his tablet so y’all could watch movies and himself, of course.
You waited on the movies, noting that the sun was going down so Erik grabbed the blanket, laid on the good of the car, and allowed you to snuggle against him. His windows were, Ari Lennox and SiR softly playing through the speakers. Erik felt whole, like he had all he needed. He had his fair share of females, some good, some bad, but the moment he laid eyes on you, he knew you weren’t the type to accept a quick fuck and he didn’t mind. He didn’t mind working his ass off to get you, and he sure as hell won’t mind working his off to keep you.
He brought out of thoughts when he felt your lips pressing against his cheek. He grinned, his golden grills gleaming in the orange-red hue of the sky. You looked up at him. “What’s on your mind, E?” He shrugged, looking down at you and licking his lips, “Just this woman I know. I think I really like her.” You giggled softly and sat up on your elbow. “Oh, yeah, what’s she like?”
Erik jokingly clutched his heart, seriously swooning over the thought of you. “She’s so beautiful. She’s powerful in any and all aspects of everything. She has the plumpest, softest lips I’ve ever kissed. Her spirit and soul are so beautiful and pure sometimes I don’t think I deserve her. Whenever my eyes meet gets it’s like...everything bad that’s ever happened to me goes away, forgotten. When she smiles it’s the type of smile to rival the sun because it’s so bright. She’s my all and I’m hoping I can make her mine soon. I don’t know what I’d do if I can’t have her, probably curl up in my bed and never leave.” He laughed softly, his words sincere. He meant it all and he hopes you knew.
“Wow...” you blinked at him, swallowing back the lump in your throat. He was so honest and sweet it almost had you sobbing. You gave him a watery laugh as a few tears slipped out. “She sounds really lucky. And I’m sure she’s the one that thinks she doesn’t deserve you. You’re so much more than I thought you’d be. You’re caring and you’re dedicated. You’re so...radical and passionate about everything. Your jokes and little pick up lines are honestly one of the things I look forward to every day. Your smile makes me melt because it’s always real, always reaches your eyes. Your laugh is the most wonderful sound I’ve heard. And I really hope she is me because I’d be a fool not to love you.”
Erik smiled and pulled you close, kissing your lips passionately. His hands tangled in your curls as your hands grabbed his face. He grunted softly, pushing his body against yours as one of his hands moved to pull your body closer. Your fingers clutched at his shirt, your tongues dancing with one another before you pulled away, lips swollen and breathing becoming rapid. You grinned at him and he kissed your nose. “You’re all mine. So, I got you something to let these niggas know who you belong to.” You couldn’t help but giggle.
Erik pecked you’re lips, climbing off the hood of the car and going inside, opening the dash before pulling out a golden box and handing it to you. You looked at it curiously before he nudged you softly. “Open it, baby.” You bit your lip, slowly taking off the lid. The shining gold and diamonds made you gasp. It was Erik’s infamous chain. He wore it a lot when he was younger but soon put it up, kind of as a reminder of who he was. And here he was, giving it to you.
It was a golden, diamond encrusted chain with a diamond encrusted knife hanging from it. The tip of the chain was covered in rubies to represent blood. From afar it look extra but up close, it was gorgeous. You looked up at him, eyes wide. He gently kissed your lips. “It’s yours, just don’t break my heart.” You chuckled and gently took it from the cushion it was laying on. You studied it before holding it towards him. “Put it on me...” you asked and turned around.
Once he clasped it around your neck you looked down, lightly touching it as it sat comfortably on your bosom. You bit your lip and looked up at Erik, his eyes resting on the chain...or maybe it was your boobs, who knows. “You look good. I think you’d look better wearing nothing but that chain though.” He grinned at you and you laughed, pulling him into another heated kiss as the sun had finally set.
—————
You waited at your sister’s bus stop, scrolling through your phone. Erik had went to the actual bus stop to pick her while you waited. Melanie hadn’t seen him in a while and you wanted her to be surprised so you said that you’d let him pick her up, he absolutely did not bounce with excitement.
A presence beside you made you look up, a smile on your face as you assumed it was Erik. It immediately dropped seeing a light skin kid, no older than 21, for sure, grinning down at you. You winced at the cheap grill he had in his mouth, wondering how he was keeping a straight face. “Can I help you, hon?” You replied politely and he licked his lips while you resisted the urge to roll your window up and continue about your business.
“What you doing out here all alone, ma?” He tried his hardest to make his voice deeper and it was painfully obvious. You chuckled to yourself, shielding your eyes from the sun, “Waiting on my man and my sister. I think you should go, they’ll be back any second.” He chuckled and leaned closer while you leaned back. “I’ll leave...when I get your number.”
You tilted your head and laughed, “Listen, kid. I’m not giving you my number and your barking up the wrong tree. My man don’t respond too kindly to niggas pushing up on his girl so run along.” The boy scoffed. “Baby, I’ll beat the fuck out ya man and steal you from him. It ain’t shit to me.” He reached to grab your arm and you immediately stepped back, smacking his hand away.
“Don’t be like that, girl. Come on.” He reached to grab your waist and you punched him in the chest, he wheezed, holding the spot. “What the fuck...” he gasped out and before you could open your mouth you saw Erik making his way towards you with Melanie. You smiled and walked around the boy, allowing Melanie to run into your arms. You giggled and held her close, kissing her cheek. “Erik brought me a Kit Kat!”
You gave Erik a disapproving and he shrugged before averting his attention to the wheezing boy on the ground. You caught his gaze and sighed, “I thought you told your lackeys who I was.” You raised an eyebrow as you helped Melanie into the car, not shutting the door yet because you didn’t want her to over heat.
“I did. Don’t look at me like that, baby. The only person I didn’t tell personally was...that dude Zo or some shit.” You nodded and grabbed the boy by the back of his shirt, making him sit up straight. “Aye, man! Don’t touch me like th—“ Zoo’s eyes landed on the chain around your neck, immediately recognizing it. “Shit.”
“‘Shit’ is right nigga, what the fuck do you think you doing pushing up on my girl?” Erik flinched as you smacked his chest, gesturing to Melanie who was to busy playing a game in your phone to be listening. “I didn’t know this was her! Nobody showed me a picture!”
“You see this big” he paused you put headphones on Melanie and kiss her head. “Ass chain on her neck and you need a fucking picture!” You looked at Erik as he pointed at the chain, hand dangerously close to your breasts. Zo shook his head, stumbling over his words. “You know what...don’t let this shit happen again. Or I swear I’ll let her use you for target practice.” Erik spoke and Zo nodded, scurrying off.
You looked at Erik’s hand, noting that it was still close to your breasts. “Move your hand, baby.” You spoke softly and Erik licked his lip before moving his hand to fully grip your titty. You laughed, throwing your head back as he pulled you close and sucked at your neck. “You too fine not to touch, pretty girl. Stop playing wit me.” You laughed your hands on your shoulders. Erik went to give you a kiss before stopping, feeling a small yet slightly painful sting to the back of his thigh. “Stop groping my sister, pervert!” Your sister yelled out.
You laughed harder, pushing Erik and moving to get in the car. “Yeah, perv! You tell him, Mel.” You sister hummed triumphantly as she closed her door and as did you. Erik looked up at the sky, taking in a deep breath before grinning. “You had to give me two handfuls?” He licked his lips again before getting int he car, starting it, and pulling off with his favorite girls.

3 Weeks Before Finals
“Get out!”
“I am. I just wanted to check my—” Flashcards. One can never over-prepare. Right?
“No. Non. Nope. No m’am.” Ruby turned Lex by her shoulders. “You promised last week that you would relax. Pinky promised! So go have your weird picnic.”
“But—”
“No buts! I’m leaving you a bath bomb by the tub, and you better use it when you get back.” Lex felt a wave of affection for Ruby. Over the years she had surpassed roommate status and built herself a home in Lex’s heart. Lex opened her mouth to thank Ruby, but Ruby had already opened the door.
“I know, I’m the absolute best and you love me most. Now go!” With a shove, Lex was out the door and Ruby slammed, screaming a muffled ‘love ya!’ through the wood.
“Love you too Ru.” Shaking her head, Lex made her way to the stairs, sliding on a pair of cat eye sunnies and adjusting the basket on her arm. Today is going to be a nice, wonderful even, but most importantly relaxing, day. Hopefully.

“So how exactly are you getting out of this Cousin?” Erik was sat in the dungeons of Eko, where the sky meets the earth in a clash of thunder and splash of waves. It’s probably the closest he’s been to the earth below in a few dozen decades. Glossy and clean, the cell wasn’t uncomfortable, especially not for a God, but it was annoying. His prank was harmless, and suddenly the Elders are yelling at him about ‘disrespect’ and ‘ineptitude’.
“First of all, this is ridiculous. It was one prank!”
“One out of a billion.” Shuri noted sharply.
“Exactly! What makes this one so special? Why are the Elders mad about this? They hardly pay attention to us nowadays. Since when are they sticklers for the rules Shu?”
“It is…strange that they’re truly upset with you.”
“See! You know I’m right. Something is going on.”
“You may be right, but you can hardly prove it.”
“Yet. I can’t prove it yet.” Erik’s face had twisted into something fierce and contemplative. Shuri shook her head.
“You know, your scheming is what got you into this mess in the first place. Besides, mother and I have a plan for you. One that the Elders have already approved.” Shuri handed him a file. Erik’s eyebrows shot up, They hadn’t bothered with paper in a few dozen centuries. Then he opened the file.
It had the picture of a girl, cute, but unknown to Erik. She had a warm smile and dark circles under her eyes, wide lips and a button nose. Her name was on the next file, along with her date of birth, age, height, blood type, lineage and even her weight. Apparently, she was a student descended from good stock. If Erik thought back hard enough, he might have remembered fighting with the girl’s great-great-grandfather in some unholy war.
“Who the hell is this?”
“Your Advocate.” Shuri shrugged when Erik recoiled.
“She’s human. She doesn’t even have a degree. Or a drop of godly blood.”
“Actually we’re still running the tests on that one, but that’s not the point. She doesn’t know much about us, but she’s smart and fair. The Elders have approved her. They believe she’ll be unbiased with…everything.”
“Everything? What do you mean everything?”Erik figured he’d be out in a years time, five at most. No longer than a blink for a god his age. The Elders rarely bothered to hold grudges with Gods like him. He was too important for the balance to be indisposed for too long.
“There’s to be a trial.” Shuri could literally see Erik’s anger as veins of gold rose up his arms, trailing towards his neck. “Before you get upset! It was either a trial or immediate exile.” Shuri had expected this to blow the wind out of his sails, but Erik only grew angrier.
“So my only chance of coming out of this is a little human? I’ve never even met the girl!” He pounded on the bars of his cell annoyed that he was beginning to feel the chill of vibranium bars.
“Exactly. I’ve convinced the Elders that if you can convince the Advocate to help you, you deserve a trial. Led by Wakandan law and defended by her of course.” It was actually the most she could get the Elders to agree to. Even as she sat pleading on her knees, the Elders merely raised a brow and nodded in irritated acquiescence.
“Well where is she?” Erik looked around Shuri, but knew his ‘Advocate’ wasn’t around. He would have noticed a human on Eko. He wasn’t the Gatekeeper, but he knew energies.
“Erik, you don’t actually think the Elders would allow her into Eko without you convincing her first.” Erik rolled his eyes ad let his head fall against the wall.
“Now how am I supposed to do that from a cell Shuri?”
“You and I both know you can be resourceful. Pranking is not your only skill.” Erik stared up at the ceiling as Shuri walked away, wishing for the first tie since his imprisonment that his father was still around. At least he could give him some strength. Unfortunately, Erik would have to bolster himself.
“Good luck Cousin!” She didn’t bother saying anything else as she exited the cell. If Erik couldn’t get his Advocate on his side, then those might be the last words she ever said to him. Better to keep them jaunty rather than grave.

It was hot. Not unbearable, but not ideal either. The sun wasn’t shy today, finally breaking through the clouds that had been hanging over town. Still Lex trundled her way towards her favorite running path on campus. Huge shades covered her eyes, lips pursing in the heat and a wicker basket swinging on her arm. She’d borrowed the basket from the only pair of her friends that she classified as adults: Tom and Lucie. Though they were all around the same age, the couple had a nice little apartment, and emanated an air of togetherness that Lex couldn’t imagine having as a scattered grad student.
Lex pulled out her phone to share her location with Ruby at the entrance to the running path. Nothing had ever happened to her, but plenty of people had plenty of stories. The path was attached to some National Park and so long as you had your university ID, you could get into the thick of it for free.
On a running day, Lex found herself going ten or so miles, but today she just wanted to make it to her favorite little meadow. She wasn’t completely stressed, and so she didn’t need the run to get rid of excess energy pulsing through her. Today was a day to relax. Wiggling her toes in her shoes, Lex set off along the path.
It took nearly an hour, but she made it. By now, sweat made her skin sticky and the breeze came and went every now and then wrapping her tight and releasing her to the relentless heat of the sun. The meadow was just as nice as it always is, quiet and simple. A bed of grass dotted with toadstools, wildflowers and shrouded in peeling sycamores. The sun filtered through the leaves and the wind enticed them to dance, like a nature-made disco ball.
There was a vignette of three old tree trunks, stripped white and smooth. There was one in the center, nearly half her height, and some days, Lex could see bunnies and birds flitting around the area. Not today it seems. She shrugged, pushing away the irrational sadness at not seeing her usual gaggle of woodland creatures today, and shook out her blanket.
Lex kept her head low while pulling out her lunch letting the sun warm her neck for a bit. Remnants of fresh brie cheese were wrapped in kente printed beeswax, water crackers, a freshly chopped apple and another for the road. A turkey and swiss stacked with tomatoes, onions and lettuce on beautifully brown rye bread; fresh bread being one of the only things Lex splurges on weekly. A bottle of tea completed the setting, glass bottle winking in the sunshine.
Lex sank into the blanket, feeling a few blades of grass poking through the soft blanket as the tree roots cradled her. Eyes closed, she inhaled deeply, letting the exhale force any tension out of her body. When she blinked her eyes open, ready to eat, there was a brown lamb next to the tree stump, not even a breath away.

“I suppose you’ve heard the news Auntie. I’m to convince an ‘Advocate’ to help me.” Erik let out a bark of a laugh. “Can you imagine, the life of a God in the hands of a human. A tragedy for the storybooks, huh?”
“As far as I remember, you’re meant to be convincing that human to help you, so instead of belittling her, why don’t you get to work?”
“I already have. I’m just waiting to see if she bites.” And to see if she’s as ‘fair’ as Shuri says.
Ramonda raised her left brow tempted to ask more of her nephew. Did he not see that his place in the Godly court was at stake? Instead he lazes around in his cell waiting for a human to what? Rise to his bait? Briefly she wondered if this was something he learned from his time in the human world. They had lost track of him when he was small; Chaos and Kindness searched high and low for the little God. Still it took them a decade or so to find him and when they did…Ramonda shook the thought from her head as Erik spoke.
“What are you doing here, my dear Auntie?”
“Since you asked Nephew, I’m here because the Advocate was my idea. And I fear I would be remiss in my duties as your family if I did not help.”
“You’re helping me?” As the Goddess of Order, Ramonda had curled her lip at Ertumke the day he was born. A child born of Chaos and Kindness was never bound to be her favorite. Still she did her duties as a Godmother, not that the child seemed to care.
“Contrary to popular belief I do care about you Ertumke. You’re my nephew. Though irritating and often ridiculously dramatic, you are family. And you were the first to put a smile on T’Challa’s face when his father left.” There was a wave of silence as the sentence settled, but Ramonda breathed life into her body again in an instant. “Shuri did the hard work of getting the Elders’ approval. Now I’m happy to induct the girl but please Ertumke, no games.”
He seemed to think about this for a while, tapping his chin and studying his Aunt. They’d never been particularly close, Erik had always favored Shuri out of the lot of them, but then again, Ramonda had never done him harm. Even now she looked uncomfortable in his presence, but I suppose that makes sense. He is the child of Chaos. Order never sat well with him.
“I asked for Shuri and they sent you.” Erik had clanked an empty cup against the glass of his cage, barked a few orders at a Dora and waited. He should have known they weren’t going to get Shuri. Those demigods never get anything right.
“She’s been in the lab for a while, I wouldn’t want to break her concentration.” Ramonda knew just about everything of Shuri’s life except what happened in her lab. As far as she was concerned it wasn’t her business, or her speed. She’d much rather influence a few architects than spend her time trying to understand Shuri’s latest invention for the world below.
“Oh, Shuri couldn’t help her big cousin cause she’s in the middle of an invention orgy? Good for her.” Erik smirked and stroked his chin.
“That is my daughter you’re speaking about Ertumke.”
Erik shrugged. It’s not like he was actually talking about sex, which would have actually been normal for Gods like him. No, Shuri spent hours and hours in a lab, inventing and came out looking like she had just rolled through sheets with some of Eko’s finest. Still, he said nothing more on the subject, knowing that he should be grateful anyone came down to the dungeons at all. It was such an odd temperature here for Gods. Nearly cold enough to raise goosebumps.
“I would greatly appreciate your help Auntie.” Erik’s voice was more of s rumble than a clear sentence, and Ramonda’s mouth fell open in shock. There is a first time for everything she supposed. Even Ertumke asking another for help.
“Would you like some water? I thought you were choking on your pride for a moment there.” Erik cut his eyes her way with a minimal amount of heat and she laughed.
“I wish you had called for us earlier. You’ve already sent out your, bait?” Erik nodded though Ramonda barely paid him any mind, releasing a heavy sigh. “I’ll be late.” this time Erik really did choke on a laugh.
“You’re worried about being late? You’re a God. We invented time.”
“There’s nothing wrong with being prompt Erik. Especially in a situation like this.” Besides, the Goddess of Order absolutely despised tardiness.

The lamb merely blinked at Lex. She froze, wondering what the hell was going on. Sure she’d seen rabbits and a few deer on the running path, it was a national park after all, but she’d never seen a lamb. She’d actually never really seen a lamb outside of a petting zoo, and that was ages ago.
This lamb, brown and unmoving, glowed gold in the sun. It’s fur had hints of red and curled like hers, in tiny kinky knots. It’s ear twitched as Lex exhaled and she froze again. The next time she breathed out, it tilted its head towards her.
“Uh…hi.” An ear twitched at the sound of her voice, but that was it. Still, she couldn’t pick up her sandwich, not while that little lamb sat there, looking at her.
Scooping the extra apple out of her basket, Lex approached the tree stumps. The lamb gazed on, black eyes unblinking. She’d taken off her shoes and socks and the grass beneath her feet was warm. The weeds circling the stump of the tree gave way the Lex’s knees as she knelt down to drop the apple before the lamb.
When she glanced up, just for a second, she saw the lamb dripping golden ichor from a crown of black thistles. Surrounded by torches and granite, the lamb was on an alter. But then she blinked, and the image was gone. Shaking her head, Lex wandered back to her blanket and ate her lunch. She was probably imagining things anyways, breakfast had slipped through the cracks in favor of another few hours of studying before Ruby woke up and berated her for it.
Lunch was delicious, the bread and brie especially. As she ate, Lex could feel tension slipping from her shoulders. She’d been coming on this path for years, and there was nothing like sitting out here. The natural sounds coaxed her worries away, and her eyes slipped closed under the sun.
When she woke an hour or so later, the apple was gone along with the beautiful brown lamb.
*^*
“Hallelujah!”
“Ruby, Jesus!”
“You look relaxed! You actually chilled out!” Ruby let out a whoop in Lex’s ear. “Though I see you haven’t used the bath bomb yet.” Ruby leaned into her neck for a whiff. “And you really should.”
“God okay, I just got back Ru.”
“I know, I know. Okay,” She plucked the basket from Lex’s arm and turned her towards the bathroom. “Go take a bath and soak in all of the serenity you found today. I’m ordering us takeout and then we’re watching crap TV!” Lex rolled her eyes as she stumbled to the bathroom.
The sunny day had taken more out of her than she imagined. She could still feel the heat on her skin as she undressed, and couldn’t stop thinking about that lamb. Sure she’d seen bunnies on the trail before, but never a lamb. Turning the hot water on, she let the tub fill as she grabbed her speaker and phone.
Light synth beats and soft piano chords filled the bathroom along with the steam, and Lex twisted the water off. Sitting on the floor, leaning over the edge of the tub, she let the bath bomb plop into the water. Closing her eyes as the bomb fizzed away, her mind drifted. She slipped into the glossy purple water absentmindedly relishing in the heat that prickled every inch of her skin.
This is always the best part of a bath. When the day is done, chores and homework taken care of, and you have to do is let the water ground you. Any movement, even your breath creates a soft current in the tub, encouraging the water to lap at your skin in a continuous embrace. Lex loved this moment, letting her head fall back as her eyes drifted shut.
When she blinked her eyes open, the album was drifting to a close and the lamb was back. In her apartment. In her bathroom. Lex jumped and water sloshed over the tub, crawling towards the lamb. She thought the steam was crafting illusions, but when she rubbed her eyes and blinked them open again, the lamb was still there. Steam swirled through the air as the lamb stood unblinking.
On a whim, Lex reached out a hand, palm open, water dripping from her fingers onto the mess on the floor. There was no way this was actually happening. Ruby would have noticed a lamb walking through the apartment, right?
“Hey, little one. What are you doing here?” Just like earlier, the lamb cocked its head at her words. Then it stooped down and licked a bit of water from the tiles. When Lex blinked again, the lamb was gone. Lex sat back gazing at the ceiling and wondering what the hell was happening.
It must be the heat. After napping out in the sun, and then a warm bath, she must just be experiencing some extreme heat exhaustion. Or some—
“Lex!” Ruby’s voice was higher than she’d ever heard it before, which raised an alarm. Ruby hated sounding shrill, she said it reminded her too much of her mom. Wrapping herself in a towel Lex hustled out of the bathroom and stopped short. Ruby was sitting on the couch in front of a woman. A woman in glowing robes.
“Um…hi?”
“Hello, Alexandra. I trust you are well.”

A/N: *peaking out from behind a luscious palm* Hi everyone! I hope you’re all doing well! I never meant to leave things this long, but I got distracted with building stuff to redo my room and then starting a new job just as Rona got her feet on the ground.
I’ll admit I’m pretty nervous about posting this story. After being away for so long, it feels like I should just dip my feet back in and start slow. I’ll be honest I haven’t written in a WHILE. I’m kind of afraid I forgot how to write? lol *yikes* I’d love to know what y’all think, and I’m going to try to be a little more active in posting this story.
As I said before, I’ve had this idea rolling around in my head for a year and some change now (I think), and I was inspired by Champion by killmongersgurl.

One Month Before Finals
There is a place where the gods live. Some call it Olympus or the Gates or even the Duat, but those names are for the others. Our gods, the Gods of Wakanda live in a different place. A space called the Eko. A gilded city of glittering silver and metallic majesty. A land, high in a clouds that blends magic and technology exactly to the gods’ liking.
This is the land where the gods charted out the world below and carved their favorites from clay. It is the place where they bicker and banter and battle. The city sees the emergence of evolution, but the land around it; the undulating hills and snow capped mountains, birth battles that rage on for centuries.
It’s in the main palace of the Eko, the building itself wrapped in glass and vibranium, that Erik finds himself in a gathering of his peers and elders.
The gods and goddesses of light and thunder, trees and panthers, technology and wonder all gathered round a lovely wooden table, intricately carved, painted, and preserved, dating back six millennia, give or take a few centuries. They were here to discuss the general goings on of the world below them. The Eko itself was a bit of paradise, but the earth containing the creatures born of the gods was in somewhat of a disarray. As usual.
The Gods of Air, looking rather sickly now-a-days howled at the Goddesses of Greed. Sanity and Simplicity, the two-headed goddess, peered at clothes of Lunacy over the table. Lunacy, robed in nothing mare than a skin and paint sneered back. Little Gods and Goddesses ran between chair legs and Erik could remember the day running this table felt like running a forest.
With everyone distracted, Erik knew this would be the perfect chance to test out a new theory. Really, just a chance to see how gullible his cousin could be. The gods surrounding the table wouldn’t mind, they never did. He himself was a god of Predator and Prey, but Erik was particularly fond of his games. The god in question bellowed a laugh as T’Challa fell into another one of his traps, covered in golden tar and dusted with what looked to be crystalline feathers.
“Erik, one day you’re going to get into something you can’t get out of.” Even as she said it, through a tight smirk Erik will note, Shuri was trying to hold back her laughter.
“I’m a God, Shuri. There’s nothing I can’t get out of.”
*^*
“You should have just taken Ancient African Mythologies with me. Then I could have helped you study.” Ruby sang the end of her sentence, poking her roommates shoulder then coming around the couch to sit with her.
“Ruby, I am not a Mythology major, and my advisor said Nutrition would help me in the field. Probably.” Lex honestly couldn’t remember what she and her advisor had talked about before she signed up for classes, but she knew Mrs. Dorsett had said something about Nutrition being helpful. Then again, she could have been mistaken. Lex had self-diagnosed herself as an exhausted Poli-Sci major since she declared, and that was three years ago.
Now, a month before finals and staring down the barrel of her senior year, she was drowning in grad school applications and dutifully ignoring any mention of student loan repayment. Ruby usually made that easy, in the same boat as Lex, but apparently today was the day to make Lex’s life difficult.
“Yeah cause Mrs. Dorsett is the paragon of Poli-Sci knowledge.” Lex gave her a look that said ‘shut up’ louder than actually saying it and Ruby shrugged. “I’m just saying we could’ve had fun. It’s our senior year! We’re supposed to be out partying and only vaguely giving a fuck. You hardly ever relax.”
“That’s because I don’t want to waste money failing an entire semester.”
“You aren’t going to fail! I bet you’d pass all of your exams if you took them now, you’ve been studying for ages.” Lex shrugged noncommittally. She always studied throughout the semester. She wasn’t smart enough to cram everything she’d need to know into her brain within a week. Her mind just did not work that way.
“Did you know Adam is throwing a party tonight?” So that’s what this is all about. Ruby has been trying to get Lex and Adam together for nearly two years now.
“Nope, and before you ask, I’m not going Ru.”
“But it’ll be fun!”
“I need sleep more than I need fun.”
“Lexie please!” Lex shook her head again, cementing her decision. Ruby pouted. “Fine, but promise me you’ll take a day off next week. You’re seriously working yourself too hard girl.”
“Fine.” At Ruby’s raised brow, Lex huffed. “I promise.”
*^*
“I mean, how can they do this? yes Erik is a prankster—”
“A menace more like it.” T’Challa interrupted indignantly, and Shuri carried on like her brother hadn’t spoken a word.
“—But he does his duty, maintains the balance, honors his disciples, cares for his land and children. Why would the Elders take such drastic action?” The gilded hall was silent save the sound of Shuri’s vibranium soled shoes pacing the polished floors.
The crowd having left moments after the arrest to spread the news. Only Erik’s closest had remained: A fuming Shuri and W’Kabi, a nearly serene Ramonda, and a begrudging T’Challa, still twinkling a bit from the crystalline feathers. A few of the Dora flanked the room, standing tall and keeping guard.
“There have been whispers my lady.” Akya, a newly graduated Dora-demigoddess spoke just loud enough to be heard.
“Whispers?” She looked reluctant to go on.
“The storm last week…”
“Yes, what about it?” Shuri could remember the raging winds slapping against the palace. She’d spent the last week working on blueprints for a better weatherproof building system using vibranium, as more than a few villages had taken a hit.
“The villagers told tales of the skins of snakes blanketing the land.”
“Snakes shed their skin all the time.”
“Forgive me my lady, not skins per se, bodies.” Shuri breathed as Akya continued. “And then last year, when madness struck the sheep.” Shuri remembered that too. But then again, it was not easy to forget. The sight of blood stained clouds coating their hills was difficult to wipe clean. Even Gods can posses weak stomaches and soft hearts, though it is not advised.
“And of course, there was his disappearance.” Shuri waved this away as an elephant’s tail would swat a fly. The Gods knew what sent Ertumke away. That was more than enough. “The people wonder if the God of Prey and Predators is not, perhaps, losing his power.” Akya finished with a grimace, showing her discomfort with speaking to a god higher than herself.
“It is precisely those moments that prove he is not. He must keep a balance!” Though Shuri herself knew that a field of sorghum covered in snakes is not particularly a smooth culling, it is a culling none the less. One of many aspects of Erik’s duties. W’Kamte was nodding along with her, vigorously. “Do you not agree mother?”
“My opinion is useless. And the Elders will say the same of yours, Shurikye.” Shuri opened her mouth to argue but stopped. The Elders were not to be argued with. They’d lived so long in the mountains that the gods and villagers alike wondered from time to time whether or not they had become the mountain itself.
“What Ertumke needs is an Advocate.”

A/N: Hellooooooooo out there! Is anyone still around? If you’re reading this you’ve entered the barren wasteland of fandom lol. I hope you’re all doing well! I know I basically disappeared off the face of the (Tumblr) earth, but I’ve had quite a time. I can’t even remember the last time I published anything on here for you guys, and when I wanted to get back into writing after trying to get my first book published, I couldn’t get this idea out of my head. Basically, I wanted to play in my favorite sandbox.
I have the idea of Egyptian/African gods which is why Erik is no long N’Jadaka but Ertumke. The same goes for Shuri who I’ve dubbed Shurikye. I hope that’s not too confusing, but I’d love to know what y’all think!
I’ve had this idea rolling around in my head for a year and some change now (I think), and I was inspired by Champion by killmongersgurl.
