Discworld inktober day 27 - Sam Vimes and Errol
Sam Vimes always felt a bit like Clint Eastwood to me, because he was always grumpy. He’s really a big softy though and even though he’s resistant, he makes so many friends in all the stories. And it felt like I did too. Including a little dragon named Errol.

When I first heard Rand would be working in a sanitarium in season 2 and he’d have a friend named Errol, I was kind of annoyed. Why would they spend precious time in a location and on a character that aren’t in the books, when there is so much ground to cover and so many characters to introduce?
But they used this setting and this character so economically, and so efficiently, that I have been completely converted. They didn’t waste a moment of screentime for Errol, and in only a few minutes justified his creation as a terrific vehicle for exposition and to introduce so many important concepts.
As soon as Rand walks in the door we’re introduced to the Aiel War (specifically—I means we got Blood Snow last season but it wasn’t put in a lot of context). We get a personal view into how much Cairhein specifically was affected by it (the effects of which are mentioned a couple more times this season), as well as giving it a relative timeframe—Errol is much older than Rand, so it wasn’t just a few years ago.
We are reminded that Rand looks like the Aiel even with shaving his head, reminding us about his adoption and that he’s an outsider. Here in Cairhein, even when people know and like him, the citizens are likely to have a gut reaction of surprise or fear when they first see him, something that may contribute to his difficulties ruling the place down the road. We are reminded that they are considered fierce fighters, and introduce that their women also fight and are considered deadly.
We are introduced to sword forms! We didn’t get Lan training Rand in either season (although it sounds like we will finally get it next season!), so it’s nice to learn he’s been getting at least some introductory training if he’s going to be a blademaster eventually. It’s also very consistent with the books for Rand to take advantage of opportunities to learn whatever and from whoever he can. We’re reminded about Rand’s heron-marked blade (before it does its important thing and melts in episode 8) and make the connection that it is carried by blademasters.
So importantly, we see how kind Rand is. He clearly knows and likes this crazy old man who’s calling for the guards. He speaks to him kindly without a trace of annoyance that they’re having the same conversation they do everyday (anyone who cares for people with dementia can probably understand that is really hard at times!). He puts Errol’s shoes on for him. This isn’t quite washing feet, which Biblically speaking is an act of humbling one’s self, but it’s definitely the sort of thing you wouldn’t expect the Promised One to be doing routinely. Right now it’s his job to do, but he does it with the care and compassion you might have for an elderly family member. He defends and comforts Errol when another employee is cruel. At heart Rand is kind and loving. Killing, ordering executions, sending people into danger where some will definitely die are all things he will need to do as Dragon Reborn, and his struggle with this will inform a large part of his arc over the next few seasons.
We see the inequality of the Cairheinin system (and then more blatently at the dinner party). Unsurprisingly the Cairheinin separate their health care by wealth and power, and it sounds like the poor ones may not even have a garden to walk around in? The Two Rivers doesn’t really have this type of inequality, and some of the first things Rand does in the books as the Dragon Reborn is make the elite start treating the poor and lower classes more fairly.
And of course we get PTSD and mental illness. Both PTSD and fears of going mad are important for Rand later, so this early introduction helps define the stakes for him.
It was such a short scene, and I’m sure there are other details those with more skill could expand on (the horse that Rand sets upright? the color palate?). I just really appreciated how much the writers crammed into an original character to help lay the groundwork not just for this season but for seasons (hopefully) to come.

Not to be sad but like do you think part of the point of having Rand work with Errol and being so kind and patient and empathetic with him was intentional in the sense that no one will do the same for Rand later

I loved watching Rand working in the sanatorium, gently taking care of Errol. It showed his caring, empathetic side and proved that just because someone has mental health problems themselves (like Rand) it doesn't mean they can't help others who also have mental health problems. On the contrary, it makes it even easier to sympathise with the person you take care of.

Been thinking lately about how Jak 3 just randomly makes a 180 when it comes to shipping and suddenly slaps Jak and Ashelin together. I didn't like it when I was young and I still don't like it a whole lot now. And I feel like a major reason for that is that Jak/Keira and Torn/Ashelin have a long history when it comes to their relationships, whether it's outright stated or up to fan speculation.
Like, even before Jak and Keira kind of get together at the end of the first game, you can tell they've known each other for a while. And it makes me wonder how they met, how they became friends, when did they first start falling for each other. Like, I'm guessing they were childhood friends, and the two of them and Daxter were almost like a Ed/Winry/Alphonse from FMAB type of situation. And then Jak II happens and suddenly, Jak is not the silly, happy kid Keira used to know, and you can see she kind of doesn't know how to feel about that, let alone process that. I wish Jak II could have delved more in to that, but I guess that leaves us fans to fill in the blanks. Did Keira learn the details of what Jak had to go through? Did she find out Errol was behind half of it? But with them together in Jak X, I feel like it kind of shows that they worked past that, and while Jak will never be the same as he was, they flirt and play around with each other almost like they did when they were younger.
Torn/Ashelin are kind of the same in a way. They've known each other for a while before the start of Jak II and it makes me wonder how they met. Was it when Torn was a Krimzon guard? Did Ashelin have any role to play in him quitting? She did say she's always wished Haven City was better ever since she was a kid. Did she encourage him to join the Underground, or did he find it first and she decided to use her position as Praxis's daughter to help? And while Torn refers to her as a friend in Jak II, he's probably already fallen for her at that point. He gets so touchy when Jak goes "Did you say 'she'?" and even more defensive when he asks later on about Torn's connection with her after finding out she was Praxis's daughter. Hell, he pretty much betrays the Underground in order to keep her safe when Praxis threatens to kill her. And if that doesn't scream love, I don't know what does. And does Ashelin ever find out what he did for her sake? Also, I'm just a sucker for the "knight/ruler" kind of ship dynamic. Like, Torn serves under Ashelin not just because it's his job, but because he loves her, and she's the only one to get past his "tough guy" exterior.
I just have a lot of feeling about these couples and I'm glad Jak X finally made things right and got them back together.

In Mort (at least I believe that it was Mort), Vetinari had a pet swamp dragon. That dragon must have been from Sybil. Some of the questions I have about this are as follows:
Was Vetinari actually interested in having a pet dragon?
Vetinari isn't one to get a dragon just because of a fad, so was it used as a living document shredder/incinerator, used as a guard dragon (which would be amusing, considering Guards! Gaurds!) or was it just a pet?
Did Sybil just give it to him? I'd like to think that she'd be more responsible than just springing a dragon on him, but then I think of Errol.
Was the dragon one that was abandoned or part of a soft cull that Sybil didn't really want but didn't have the heart to get rid of, and Vetinari was only able to stand so much of her talking about it before adopting (accepting) the dragon himself?
Did a dragon just really like Vetinari and Sybil just decided then and there that the dragon was his, leaving Vetinari to figure out how to keep it away from paperwork and how to keep his black clothes ash-free?
Was it a special variety or was it just as much of a (lovable) wreck as Errol or possibly Wuffles?
What was the dragon's name?
edit: It was Mort. Through the 1/2 hour that the dance progressed around the palace, it picked up "two trolls, the cook, the Patrician's head torturer, three waiters, a burglar who happened to be passing and a small pet swamp dragon" (pg 175 in the 2019 Corgi edition) and later (pg 177 of the 2019 Corgi edition) it appears again: "Behind Death the Patrician's small pet swamp dragon held on grimly to the bony hips and thought, guards or no guards, next time we pass an open window I'm going to run like buggery".
