female reader, she/her pronouns, black coded reader, canon-verse, angst (set just around early season 1 but skips to end of season 2) , cliché angst (reader’s brother died in the survey corps)
author’s note:
i don’t think i made erwin ooc in this, he’s an asshole because he’s familiar with the reader, so much so that he’s unafraid to show the ruthless side that got him the commander role

Your chest burned.
As white-hot fury overtook your body, your senses, and your thoughts, people began to back away from you and mutter how crazy you were.
You burst into the tavern, earning bewildered stares. You made a beeline for him and him only.
"Woah, woah, woah!" A voice called out. Some tried to rush to pull you away but it was too late.
Captain Commander of the Survey Corps, Erwin Smith was doused in icy, subzero water and a raggedy pail with splinters and holes hung on his head like a dunce cap.
"How dare you show your face?!" You screeched.
He didn't react, whatsoever. It was one of his subordinates who rushed to remove the bucket. It was his other subordinates you attempted to restrain and chuck you out of the establishment as you thrashed against them.
He held out a hand as if to signal them to let you go. And despite their disagreements, their Captain's orders were absolute.
His blond hair which was usually neatly combed was now plastered to his forehead. The water seeped through his shirt, to reveal his taut pectorals and abdominals.
You were breathing heavily as you met his steely gaze.
No anger. No hurt. It was just blank. It was terrifying.
"You are going to the deepest pits of hell, Smith."
"Lady! That's enough! I don't know what kind of crap you're spewing, but Captain Erwin is a hero-"
"Of course, you would think that you brainwashed numbskull. You're all pawns in his game! He will lead you to your deaths in a heartbeat!" You screeched.
Your statement was met with silence. The rowdy patrons were at a loss for words. It was whispered across the inner walls. That Erwin led suicide missions. But hearing a commoner say it so boldly was a shock and a half.
Nobody visits. And you're fine with that.
You prefer it that way.
So when there was a knock at the door about two hours later after the scene you caused, your eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
Nevertheless, you opened the front door and there he stood. His clothes were still visibly damp but it was clear he attempted to dry up.
"Did that little stunt of yours back there make you feel good?" Erwin said, peering down at you, eyes stormy. The man was terrifying.
Erwin didn't need to be threatening.
He didn't need to raise his voice or say vulgar words to be intimidating. The hollowness in his words and eyes was enough.
"No. Nothing will feel good unless I watch you firsthand bleed to death." You spat. "Slow and torturous. That would really get me off."
"Funnily enough, that's exactly how he died." He stated. You furrowed your brows at him.
"He and a few others were cornered by a Titan. I don't know what was wrong with this particular Titan, but it didn't eat him. It just tore him limb from limb, with its teeth until he was a stub and left him. We found him a day or two later. Maybe if we found him sooner we could return him. Unable to be of use to anybody but still alive."
"You really are the lowest of the low. I wonder why you're held in such regard, I wish people knew how awful you really are. That polite front is all a facade."
Erwin snorted.
"You blame me...but every member knows joining comes with a risk of death. Including him."
"I hope every person who died under your orders torments you in your sleep." You hissed, then shutting the door in his face. He wedged his foot between the door and glared at you.
"You don't hate me because of the people I let die. You don't hate me because your brother died. You hate me because I didn't choose you." He replied.
Causing you to shove him with such force, he nearly lost his balance, then slammed the door.
It wasn't always like this between you and Erwin. Believe it or not, there was a point in time when you adored him. A little too much.
You remember it.
The day he gently took your hand in his large, calloused one and met your eyes with his own steely, blue ones.
The sensation of his lips against your skin sent a burst of butterflies within your stomach and a shudder throughout your spine.
Something always lurked within him and you did your best to ignore that. You remember days when his friends began to become irritated. He wanted more.
So much more.
-
That familiar burn in your chest returned.
"Why are you here?" You said, haughtily as you saw him standing outside the front of your house, as you returned from the marketplace.
Your eyebrows furrowed together.
Erwin looked nothing like he usually did. Sporting a five o'clock shadow, a bed head, and the most shocking detail of all.
One arm.
When your eyes settled, you immediately dropped the basket of produce and the vegetables tumbled and rolled across the grassy land.
Ten minutes. Ten minutes and he had to leave, as he followed after you inside your home.
"I don't think I could ever forgive you for what you said to me that night." You said, voice shakily.
"Unable to be of use to anybody but still alive."
Those words stabbed and stabbed at you over the years.
Whenever you heard the news about the Walls and other affairs, and Erwin and the other Survey Corps members' names popped up that one sentence went for the jugular every time.
It's not as if you can dish it and not take it. You never cared when Erwin hurled insults back at you. However, your precious younger brother?
He adored Erwin. He was his role model, and for him to speak about him in that manner caused blood to roar in your ears.
"I didn't come here to ask for forgiveness." He replied.
"So why did you come here?" You hissed.
"Because I'm a selfish and greedy man."
You bit your tongue.
You despise Erwin Smith.
So you will not comfort or reassure him.
"I wanted to see you. My time is coming. Things are shifting. So before I finally am dragged to the depths of hell that you wish so badly, I want to see your face."
"You were wrong."
"I was?"
"I never hated you for not choosing me. I hated you for stealing the only one I had in this world. My flesh and blood. But maybe if I never bothered with you, he'd be with me. So really, I hate myself."
You twisted your lips to the side, then turned away from his gaze.
“I blame you because it’s easier. You told me the day he got into the training corps. It’s his decision. It’s his dream and he’s his own person. But that somehow makes it worse.”
“So you knew all this time?” He responded.
“Forgive me for being a tad bit irrational about losing my younger brother, Captain Smith.” You spat, venomously.
“I had a reason to say that.” He said, firmly. You raised a brow, then gestured to the clock.
“Seems like your ten minutes are up, Captain Smith. You best be on your way, I’m sure you have pressing matters to attend to.”
“Call out my name.”
“…Huh?”
“Please just…say my name.”
You may never smile at me again, but let me remember the way my name is spoken from those beautiful lips. Even if my name is accursed to you.
“Bye, bye Erwin.” You said, monotonously as you opened the door. He began to take his leave, then lowered his head down to your ear.
The words made your heartbeat quicken, and you grab onto the doorknob for dear life.
And with that, that was the last time you saw him.
-
“You remind me of a time in my life when I wasn't so desperate to know the hidden depths of this world.”
That was the last words that the Thirteenth Commander of the Survey Corps had whispered to you.
“You really were a selfish man..” You said with a mirthless laugh as you stood at the headstone, sinking your teeth into your bottom lip trying to push back the tears that stung your waterline. “Erwin Smith.”

Seven “Best” Character Arcs in AOT by GameRant
This list is just all over the place, so here’s my two cents..... https://gamerant.com/attack-on-titan-best-character-arcs/ 7) Sasha Freaking Braus earns her rightful place on this list alongside the main three and in actuality is FAR more deserving of her placement there than some of them are. She may be a secondary character but she became a fan favorite for a reason. And I am still not about to shake on my stance that she is EASILY far better developed than Mikasa, despite only get a fraction of focus. Sasha easily could’ve been the main girl of the series and it would’ve been far more satisfying. More testament to what a criminal decision it was to allow Assassin’s Bullet to EVER be published. It was not just a bad call on Isayama’s part, it was an ABUSE.
6) Armin Arlert certainly earns his spot, going from a shirking coward to arguably a better strategist than Hange Zoe or even Erwin Smith. Too bad the final season undermines this badly with his failure to field the Colossal Titan when it really could’ve come in handy, his nonsensical promotion to commander of the Survey Corps which for all intents and purposes was functionally destroyed by that time, and of course his infamous final exchange with Eren. Nevertheless......Armin does earn his spot for his growth in the story preceding the timeskip.
5) Like Sasha, Hange Zoe’s demise is one hundred percent UNJUSTIFIED. She is a truly great character (Whether you choose to refer to her as male or female, however you roll) and like Sasha has an infectious personality, not to mention her great intellect which made her an effective warrior against the Titans. But......her character growth is kind of static. And once again, the goddamned timeskip didn’t do her any favors, making her come off as an incompetent commander who failed to subdue a betrayal from the likes of Floch and his fellow Yeagerists, and as many a fan will tell you, she NEVER GOT A BACKSTORY. Too many questions left unanswered about the Regiment’s third or fourth most senior soldier.
4) Annie Leonhart, you gotta be kidding me. Story takes almost a decade to find a place for her again and she doesn’t regret any of her past actions......And she walked for her crimes despite being partially responsible for provoking Eren into setting off the Rumbling. That’s not character development.......That’s evidence that Annie should’ve died back during the Female Titan Arc. The bare minimum is afforded to her in the timeskip after her rather contrived return. As I’ve said before, TOO LITTLE TOO LATE.
3) Mikasa Motherfucking Ackerman............Do I really need to repeat myself on this one? On why she doesn’t earn her spot on this list?
2) Eren Yeager. One word for his arc: BASTARDIZATION. People thought Anakin Skywalker’s transition to Darth Vader was handled clumsily no thanks to the prequels. But that’s peanuts compared to Eren’s descent into madness. One of the biggest criticisms of the ending of Titan is how it completely undermines Eren’s motivations for why he did everything he did, with this insultingly forced predestination subplot that shows he was evil all along......A revelation that subverts everything previously established. And all for a world-destroying revenge scheme that it’s hinted he knew was never gonna truly succeed in the end. That said, I am in the crowd that considers Eren Yeager to be effectively discredited as both a protagonist and antagonist with the events of the timeskip, and he may very well be the weakest link due to its horribly misguided execution. Eren turning evil could’ve worked, but in the end......I have concluded that it was one of the worst bad calls of Attack on Titan. He absolutely should not be on any “Best Of” lists ANYWHERE.
1) Levi, the only character who truly earned his survival in the end. Too bad he was pretty badly mutilated in the final acts. He is a true badass, but I am going to say I think his character growth is somewhat lacking. Probably because he loses all the friends relevant to his growth. And YET AGAIN, the timeskip did him no favors for sidelining him through the entire War on Paradis Arc. Levi’s saving grace is that he is enough of a badass and complex character to back up the focus he has enjoyed outside of these stumbles, so while I think his growth is lacking, he as a character is still good. And he deserved a better ending than what he got, because it wasn’t satisfying in the slightest. And he’s still an infinitely stronger character than his closest rival and mystery relative, Mikasa. Perhaps the series would’ve benefitted from him being the true main protagonist.
This list doesn’t really acknowledge the deeper problems that undermines its selections, so it’s overall not reflective of how Titan handled its main cast.
But on the plus side, whoever complied this did not include that bitch Gabi Braun, easily the most unwarranted and unnecessary character in the saga. Too often praised for a character arc that simply DOES NOT MATTER. Sorry Gabi fans, but the payoff you love to tout doesn’t exist, so arguing that she was necessary to the themes and final conclusion of Titan simply hold no water. You cut her out and not much would change, except Sasha and perhaps even Eren would’ve gotten the focus they still needed in place of this bitch.
Also, NO HISTORIA OR YMIR! Seriously, what the hell?
Thoughts on this list? Thoughts on my verdicts on this list? Do tell.

I'm not gonna lie, my experience with AoT begins and ends with when my friends who were super into anime having me watch it with them, and the extent of what I understand about him upon watching halfway through season 1 is 'this man dies and everyone ships him with Armin.'
AoT as a media is...very squicky for me in general, so most of my knowledge of it is basically limited to when I watched it with my buddies in high school. And I only watched through half of season 1.

Going back to shiganshina after all of these years was a huge deal. Especially after the glorious send-off you were given by the citizens of Wall Rose. You came back to reclaim Wall Maria after six long years, you’re taking back your land and defeating the titans that filled your hearts with terror, cause that’s what heroes do.
But in reality, it didn’t really feel that way to you. Instead of being the hero who’s facing their fear, you feel like a terrified child living in a nightmare.
You expected a fight with the titans, of course, you did. Taking back your land won’t come without a fight, without losses. And it’s not your first time facing titans.
You’ve been fighting them for years now, getting rid of them one after the other alongside your friends. Your records are filled with a decent number of kills and you are proud of it.
But this… this is different, you’ve never been in this situation before. You fought titans and you watched them kill your comrades in the worst ways imaginable, but never in your various years within the survey corps did you ever imagine that these monsters would show this tactical intelligence.
It made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Titans are a nightmare on their own, with intelligence like that you’re surely done for.
When you came to shiganshina you expected a fight against the armored and the colossal, even the beast titan, but not a tactical war with pure titans that follow command, and most certainly not rocks killing your most skilled comrades and caging you against the wall.
Despite your fear, you felt a sarcastic chuckle slip past your lips. You’ve lived for years with nightmares of being eaten, and now you’re dying in a titan game of baseball, how pathetic.
Your eyes drifted to Erwin and Levi who were having a private conversation nearby as you tried to calm the panicking recruits. Erwin… your commander, your love, the man who never knew how to back down. He's not in the best physical state, but he just had to come along. He had to be here even though he knew he won't be able to fight.
Despite the fear eating at your heart, you kept your composure, that’s the least you owed your commander. After the recruits calmed down, you made your way to where Erwin and Levi stood. Their conversation halted as you stood in front of them, their eyes holding something unreadable in their depth.
"I'm hoping these looks mean you came up with a plan… " You spoke, your voice coming with the quiver you never hoped to show.
A moment of silence passed, a look shared between Erwin and Levi… if this meant anything then you weren’t about to hear good news. There was tension in the air as Erwin explained his plan to you. It was then that you understood the look in their eyes, you think a similar one can be seen in your eyes now.
It finally dawned on you that this is the end. There is no way out of this war alive. Erwin's plan had a single meaning; if you keep standing where you are, you'll be flattened by the rocks thrown at you by the beast, and if you fight back, you die. You'll have to give your lives so Levi could deal with the Beast Titan.
You always knew this day would come. A war with the titans can’t end without casualties. The survey corps numbers were always changing. These are all facts, but you had hoped it wouldn’t be like this.
The fear was eating at your insides, it’s impossible to face titans without it, but you knew ever since your very first day with the corps that you’ll have to be ready to give your life. You were ready to accept it… that is, until Erwin spoke up again.
"We'd have to ask these young people to give up their lives. You'd need the skills of a first-rate con man to come up with a reason that convincing, so I doubt any of them would charge forward unless I was leading the way."
His words are like a slap back to reality, it wasn’t just your life you were giving. All of your remaining comrades will have to give theirs too, including the commander. The survey corps are going to be wiped out in a crazy move of mass suicide. But it wasn’t only your lives that would have to be given, and all it took was one look in Erwin’s eyes to know where this was going.
"Which would mean I'd be the first to die, " Erwin said and you held your breath waiting for his next words "without ever learning… what was in that basement."
You knew it, you knew this was coming but it still hurt. Amid this chaos, you managed to forget the reason why Erwin insisted to be here in the first place.
'Oh, Erwin, if only you weren't so stubborn' The words were dancing on the tip of your tongue but you couldn’t speak.
Of course, Erwin has dreams, he’s just as much of a human as everyone here. While most of the corps were fighting for freedom or revenge, Erwin was fighting for the truth, for evidence that his father’s death meant something.
The look of shock on Levi’s face came nowhere close to the pain you felt. You joined the scouts for a purpose, too. Your dream was freedom, you hoped to be free of the confinement and the terror that the existence of the titans brought. But, now that you think about it, you did get a taste of freedom.
You were free from the confinement of the walls on your horse, feeling the air rushing through your hair and over your skin every time you went out on an expedition.
You were free of terror every time you raised your swords to cut through the nape of a titan’s neck. Every time you brought a titan down you had a taste of the freedom you were chasing.
And the people who fought for revenge, didn’t they get that too? They killed titans, they felt the satisfaction of getting rid of the enemy who hurt them and their loved ones.
The only dream that was never given a chance was Erwin’s. How unfair could the world be to take away the only chance from the man who helped give almost every soldier in the scouts a taste of their dreams? No… he can’t die, not yet.
You let Erwin give his speech. That’s one thing that no one else can do. Erwin is the only one who can convince the recruits, crying out in fear, to stand tall and fight back as they take their last breaths of the air filled with the smell of dust and death.
As Erwin and the recruits were absorbed in their final thoughts and the speech, you slightly pulled on Levi’s sleeve pulling him back several steps.
The first step of your plan came into action as you answered Levi’s questioning look with a whisper “I want you to distract him.”
“What?” Levi asked, the confusion only growing on his face.
“I want you to distract Erwin. He is giving his speech, I’ll lead the recruits to their death,” you say, your whole being pleading that Levi would agree to help you. He has to, this won’t work out without his help.
“But—”
“Levi, please. The scouts still need him, you know that!” you pause glancing back at Erwin to make sure he’s not listening “When it’s time to move, I want you to pull him aside, tell him it’s something important. It’ll only take a few seconds, then you can carry out your part of the plan and kill the beast.”
“And how do you plan to stop Erwin from following you?”
“I’ll take any extra horses with me, he won’t be able to help you kill the beast and his odm gear won’t do much for him to follow after me,” you held your breath, your eyes pleading. This has to work “Please! Just do me this final favor.”
A moment passed as Levi glanced at Erwin then back to you, his expression unreadable. It was obvious your sacrifice isn’t just for the sake of the corps. “...Fine, but you’ll have to be quick”
“I’ll do my best… Thank you, Levi” the smile that spread across your face was blinding. It held so much gratitude, a final thank you combined with a goodbye.
It didn’t take long for Erwin’s words to give everyone back their composure. You helped everyone fall in line as fast as possible. You are running out of time. The houses around you are almost flattened. You have to move forward, this has to work. You can’t fail this, it has to be meaningful, for you, for the recruits who’ll pay their lives with you, for the whole of humanity… and most importantly, for Erwin.
Everyone is on their horses but it’s not time to move yet. You let your eyes meet Levi’s for one last time giving him a slight nod, signaling for him that you’re ready as you settled on your horse.
Levi stopped Erwin from riding his horse beside you, telling him there’s something important that he has to know first and pulling him aside. He walked Erwin as far from you and the recruits as possible without making it seem suspicious.
Erwin followed urgently after Levi not even allowing you one last look at his face. But that was ok, you didn’t need to see his face, it was already burned to the back of your eyelids.
It all took a few seconds, once you saw Levi and Erwin start talking you took hold of Erwin’s horse and started screaming encouragements for the recruits to charge as you rushed forward. Erwin’s shock had him freeze for a couple of seconds and that was enough for you.
You charged forward with the recruits right after you. Levi waited for a few more seconds to make sure Erwin wouldn’t follow after you. When he was sure you were far enough he took off towards his target, leaving Erwin standing there alone his eyes wide in shock.
Your screams of encouragement were so loud, louder than Erwin ever heard them. They were loud enough that even though you were too far away for him to follow he could still hear your voice filled with determination.
You didn’t look back, there was no reason to. This is the right decision, this plan will work and Erwin will lead what’s left of the scouts to victory. Your life is a small price to pay, it’s nothing compared to the rest of the lives that were already lost.
You can see the beast drawing his hand back, getting ready to shower you with the next round of crushed boulders. Your yelling never stopped even though your throat was running sore from all the screaming.
You didn’t stop when the flares were shot, not when the rocks started showering the frontline lead by you. You didn’t stop when the rocks started growing larger in your vision, you hardly even saw them. All you could see was the future, a bright one without the titans and the fear and the pain. You could see the past, the best and the worst of it. All the memories that you shared with every single one of your comrades.
You kept yelling for everyone to rush forward as tears ran down your face. It’s going to be ok, you had all you ever needed. It was time for you to follow through the same path your fallen comrades walked.
Your screams were cut short when the first rock hit you, sharp pain running through your whole body and the world started spinning as you fell off your horse. The tears still filling your eyes helped blind you, sharp whistles filling your ears and the ever-growing pain flowing through you in waves.
You could hear screams of the fallen around you, hidden behind the ringing in your ears. You could feel the air rushing across your skin as the soldiers rushed past you on their horses. Your mind was as paralyzed with pain as your body.
You just laid on the ground, your tear-filled eyes directed to the blue of the sky but the world has lost its color. It went on forever until you were numb, you have lost all feeling, the only thing you can hear is the sound of your heart growing faint as the blood pooled around your body.
You let your eyelids cover your eyes like curtains, your mind swimming somewhere between consciousness and an endless void. You could hardly feel a thing.
It almost felt like falling asleep, your grasp on reality slipping away. But through the back of your mind, the tiny part that was still conscious could feel your body being moved by someone and a rapid rush of air running across your skin.
It gave a jolt to your brain as if something is trying to pull you back to reality but you were too weak. All you wanted was some rest, you just wanted to sleep.
It was a shock to everyone that you’re still alive. You were in bad shape after losing so much blood. Your breath was faint, but it was there and it was enough for you to be revived by the injection. Armin’s state was worse, the fact he was still breathing was a complete miracle, his whole burned away.
Through your clouded consciousness, you could register voices and movement around your body that laid motionless close to Armin’s. It took everything in you to open your eyes, to try to make out the words being yelled back and forth around you.
Through your blurry vision, you could make out the outline of a face so close to yours, peering down at you. You couldn’t see clearly but you knew it was Erwin. Your hearing wasn’t fully registered but you could make out a few words, things like ‘Armin’, ‘Injection’, ‘need’, and your name.
Your foggy mind could barely understand what was going on, but questions started to fill up the part of your consciousness still present.
Were you dying? The last thing you remember is sharp pain rushing through you in waves, but it seems more like a distant memory.
Was Armin dying? If there are mentions of Levi’s injection then this surely is the case.
A few seconds passed when a new figure appeared in your limited line of vision looking down at you over Erwin’s shoulder. Both of them shifted around until the short figure disappeared again, leaving you with Erwin.
Erwin’s voice was so close to your ears, faint whispers about how it’s going to be alright falling past his lips. You felt a huge hand wrap gently around your forearm, followed by a sharp object touching your arm. The injection!
“No,” The barely audible whisper that left you halted Erwin’s actions as his eyes shot to your face “Did we win?”
It felt like too much time has passed before you heard Erwin’s reply “Yes, it’s over”
You were using up too much of your energy to fight back the fog filling your mind. Just a few seconds more, a few more and you’ll allow yourself some rest.
“Save… Armin” your voice was growing weaker, breaths growing shorter.
It broke Erwin’s heart. He was once again being selfish, everyone else chose to save you because you had more experience. To them, you were more valuable to the scouts, with the exception of Armin’s friends who couldn’t accept the fact of him dying.
And Erwin? He wasn’t much different. He wanted to save you because he needed to. He needed to scold you for the stupid move you pulled. He needed to tell you that he would’ve preferred dying by your side than be faced with your death. He needed you to live.
You didn’t understand, he can’t let you die. There was no time for him to explain how valuable you are to the scouts, how valuable you are to him.
He was about to ignore what you said, bring the syringe back to your arm again but with the almost non-existent strength you had, you pulled away.
“Armin” you whispered again, weakly. Your strength wasn’t enough for you to pull back completely, just slightly shift your arm away from the sharp needle, but it was enough to send your message across.
Erwin understood. You were never as selfish as him. You always made the decisions that would benefit the ones you care about most. Erwin took a shaky breath, the composure he usually kept was there for everyone’s eyes, but he wasn’t as composed on the inside.
Armin is a valuable soldier. He is an essential part of the scouts and you understood that. He should be the one to live. And Erwin knew this fight would make no difference if he couldn’t throw everything he had away.
He was ready to throw his dreams and his life away, but you chose for him. You decided he’d keep his life and dreams but in exchange, he’d have to give you up.
After injecting Armin and pulling your weak body away, Erwin stayed by your side. He kept his one hand placed on your heart, waiting for the faint beating to completely stop. And it would have lasted longer if you hadn’t used up so much energy.
To your weak mind, this was the right decision. Armin would do more change for the scouts, for humanity than you ever could. You had no regrets, you’ve got everything you ever asked for.
You allowed your eyes to rest again, let the energy leave your body. And with the last few seconds your breath was there, you could register one whisper. I love you.

Chapter 7/?
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Chapter 5
Chapter 6
The city he had chosen to stay in was terrible.
It was noisy, it was crowdy, and the constant heat was making Levi go insane.
And while the city’s loudness and the amount of people in it made it easier for him to blend in, get lost in plain sight and all that bullshit, the heat— the fucking heat, gods, it was killing him.
Levi didn’t like cold weather, despised all the layer of clothes he had to put on just to get to the nearest supermarket and buy instant noodles, he hated the snow with passion he carried since his childhood, he thought that winter was the worst season of them all.
Oh, how wrong he was.
The heat was making his skin crawl. Even in just tank top and shorts, he felt too hot. Drinking cold water, taking cold showers, none of it helped. Levi turned the air conditioning in his room on maximum, but the motel he was staying at was shitty, his room was shitty, and, as a result, the air conditioning was shitty too.
Levi was sick of it. His skin was constantly clammy and sticky, he couldn’t sleep at night, there was never enough air around him, and walking around the city during the daytime made him seriously consider whether he was actually a vampire.
The sun… could it really burn so much? It didn’t used to be so unbearable before.
But apart from that… Levi was starting to accommodate to his new life.
Leaving his hometown behind, he decided to let go of his previous habits too. He got himself a job - not a respectable, but at least an honest one.
Being a janitor in a shitty bar after spending most of his life as a thief was almost… therapeutic.
The vomit on the walls and piss on the floors were enraging him to the point of seeing red and sometimes he wanted to break a leg of every asshole who didn’t know when they had enough and went to make a mess in the toilet, but… working there was therapeutic nevertheless. And a definite improvement too.
At least, his life wasn’t in danger anymore and he didn’t have to run away from police.
Although, he wouldn’t mind running away from a certain police officer. Perhaps, this time he would let her catch him. Perhaps, then his heart would stop clenching in pain every time he thought about Hange.
Perhaps, then he’d be able to let go.
He tried letting go, forgetting about Hange, just as he tried to put behind his life of crime. Unfortunately, putting Hange behind proved to be that much harder.
Some nights, when the heat was especially bad, he felt especially lonely and the shitty whiskey at the shitty bar he was working at didn’t do the trick, he’d snuck a look at how Hange was doing. He’d open his phone, scroll through a news feed. If he’d get lucky, there would a recording of some press conference with Hange at the center of it all.
Apparently, she was doing well. Her shoulder was almost healed, although sometimes she still winced, when gesticulating too frantically. But the paleness in her face that was present when he had visited her at the hospital was long gone, and at the few press conferences that allowed Levi to catch a glimpse of her, Hange’s cheeks were adorned by healthy, rosy blush. Her hair was just as wild, just as messy, and her voice carried the same inspiring conviction.
Whether Hange found out the truth about him or not, he didn’t know, but she had moved past Ackermans’ case and during the time Levi was getting used to his new life she alredy solved two robberies.
She was working on a new case now, something about a young girl who had mysteriously vanished. Levi didn’t bother to find out the details, the name Krista Lenz meant nothing to him, but nevertheless, he wished that Hange would succeed. She deserved that, her quick wit and determination were meant to be recognized and celebrated.
That bright, happy smile on her face, the one she was sporting during the conference that discussed one of the solved robberies, it suited Hange so much. Levi wished she’d wear it more often.
He wished he’d see it more often, but well… some things just weren’t meant to be.
Strangely so, Kenny didn’t contact him even once. No obnoxious phone call, no mysterious messages or weird gifts. There was no sign of him for almost two months, and Levi would have started worrying, would have tried to contact the man himself, if… if Kenny wasn’t Kenny.
His uncle was like a cockroach, Levi was one hundred percent sure that nothing and no one could cause him any harm. And if there was someone who actually could do this, Kenny would have harmed them back, ten times worse.
Still, the thoughts about Kenny lingered at the back of his mind, and memories about Hange did the same irritating thing. It made Levi feel awfully nostalgic sometimes, borderline melancholic. And fairly quickly he found out there was nothing he could do about it. No amount of whiskey or dirty toilets could chase that sadness away. That sadness was a new part of his new life.
Maybe, it was better than always living on the edge.
Luckily, he didn’t feel so lonely all the time, his colleagues at the bar made sure of that.
And while his boss, a bald, gross man called Shadis definitely wasn’t a joy to have around, two others – a barmaid named Sasha and waiter Connie were so much better.
They were annoying in their own right, of course. Sasha had a weird obsession with food, Connie’s sense of humor left much to be desired, and together both of them were so damn loud, but for brats who barely stepped into adulthood, they provided a fairly enjoyable company.
They let Levi take his mind off certain things, and they kept him from falling into the abyss of loneliness and depression.
They also opened up the side of him that Levi wasn’t even aware of.
Connie had once mentioned in a passing that his mother had died years ago, and whatever happened to Sasha’s family, she wasn’t living with them anymore, sharing a small flat with Connie and another guy, Jean.
In Levi’s humble, unbiased opinion, Jean was a self-centered, pompous jerk. He wasn’t working in the bar with his two friends, and instead had involved himself in some shady shit with a local gang, which apparently terrified the whole neighborhood. Levi wanted to tell the boy that he was a fucking idiot, if he thought that messing with criminals was a good idea, but he doubted that Jean would listen. Luckily, Jean wasn’t around too often and visited the bar only, when he was miserable about some girl he had a crush on, or whenever he wished to get drunk for free.
It was a good thing that Levi barely interacted with Jean. The boy was so annoying. And also – too damn tall.
He didn’t hear about any other friends of theirs, and as far as Levi was aware, there was no actual adult watching over Sasha and Connie, so… he kinda, unwillingly, of course, took that task upon himself.
Obviously, he made sure to remain discreet. He didn’t want the brats to know that he cared, because he didn’t, naturally.
He claimed that he simply cooked too much food and the leftovers would go to waste, if he didn’t give them away, when he brought them pasta or soup. He mentioned his insomnia and pretended that long walks helped him sleep better, when Sasha and Connie went home after midnight. He lied about having experience in bartending when Sasha got stomach flu. He said that he was just accidentally passing by their apartment, when later that day he visited to check on her.
The brats were too dense to notice his subtle attempts anyway, or so Levi hoped. They had never brought it up, and that had to mean something, right?
And that time when Connie tried to fix Levi’s air conditioning, or when Sasha brought a whole jar of his favorite tea, or all those evenings when he felt blue and homesick and they helped him clean the bar and took him out to dinner, surely it was nothing more than a coincidence.
The brats had their moments, Levi had to admit, and sometimes their presence was almost pleasant.
But sometimes they made him wish they shut their mouths and never opened them again.
Right now, that desire was more prevalent than ever.
“Say, Mister Levi,” Levi hated when they called him that, it made him sound even older than he actually was. He told them to stop it, many times. But the brats didn’t care. He slowly raised his eyes to show that he was listening. As soon as he did, Sasha put a fist underneath her chin, forgetting about the important task of cleaning the glasses to stare at him curiously. “Do you have someone?”
“Someone?” he had an inkling of what Sasha was asking him about, but he didn’t wish to discuss that with the damned brats. He didn’t wish to discuss that topic with no one, ever. Because… there was nothing to discuss.
“Yep, someone!” Connie chimed in. “Like, hm, a significant other?”
“A beloved!” Sasha agreed, nodding enthusiastically.
Levi felt the migraine coming. “I don’t have any kind of someone,” he gritted. “And I never did.”
“Really?” Sasha tilted her head to the side, looking so skeptical that Levi was ready to get offended. Was he not convincing enough? “I thought you do. It’s just that sometimes—”
“When you think no one is looking!” Connie swiftly added.
“Your face seems so much softer, and your scowl almost disappears, and you look—”
“Just like Jean when he thinks about Mikasa.”
Who the fuck was Mikasa? And what face was Jean making? Levi couldn’t be making the same one, could he?
“But if you say there is no one,” Sasha sighed, returning to her task of cleaning glasses. Wearing the same sad face as she did, Connie went back to gathering dishes from the tables. “Then I guess we’re wrong.”
Damn right, they were. There was no one, and whatever face they thought he was making, it couldn’t possibly be related to a certain police officer from the other side of the world.
“And if there is no one you have to think about,” Sasha winked, like she was seeing right through him. “Then let me make you a drink. It’s a new recipe I found, it involves tequila, vodka and—”
Levi raised a hand to cut her off. “Just surprise me.”
Sasha nodded and went to work. She frequently let Levi taste her new cocktails. He was the perfect man for it – he didn’t get drunk too fast, and he was the only Sasha’s friend who tasted something better than cheap whiskey or a beer from a local supermarket. He also never shied away from telling her when the drink was fucking awful.
Sasha hummed as she mixed the drink, some song Levi vaguely recognized from the radio. She was smiling too, she did that frequently, and something about her, be it the ponytail that jumped up and down when she was excited, or her easy-going, cheerful personality reminded him of Hange.
These days, lots of things reminded him about Hange. There were days when almost everything reminded him of Hange. It seemed like today was exactly a day like that.
“You’re making that same face again,” Sasha whispered, as she handed him the drink.
Levi scowled, glaring at the girl, as he put the glass up to his lips. He finished it in one go. “It tastes like shit,” he told her. “Put it on the menu.”
Sasha beamed, refilling his glass. “Knew you’d like it.”
“By the way, boss,” Levi wasn’t their boss, as far as he was aware, their actual boss was getting drunk in his office, all the while mumbling incomprehensible gibberish about some Carla. But Levi had to admit, being called boss was so much better than the godforsaken mister Levi. "Are you free tonight?"
Levi was free every day and every night, when he wasn’t working in the bar with Connie and Sasha. It wasn’t like he had any friends or even acquaintances beside two brats. However, saying it out loud would make him look even more pathetic that he actually was. So Levi shrugged, and said, as nonchalantly as possible, “Depends.”
“Would you like to come over for dinner?” Connie asked, looking at him with a smile so hopeful that Levi was ready to say yes right that instant. God, they already had him wrapped around their fingers. How embarrassing. At least, Kenny wasn’t here to witness it. He’d have a laugh of his life, if he found that Levi was adopted by two teenagers. “Jean is away on a trip, so we’d be glad to have some company.”
“He went to see his family?”
From the way Sasha bit her lip and Connie refused to meet his eye, Levi knew – their friend didn’t go on a simple trip. He sighed, taking a sip from his glass and letting the bitter liquid burn his throat. Admittedly, it was none of his business. He shouldn’t care about it, he wasn’t their father, for god’s sake. But… a friendly piece of advice wouldn’t hurt, right?
“Your friend plays with fire. And if he continues doing so—”
“Jean knows what he is doing,” Connie crossed hands on his chest defensively. “He is smart.”
Levi couldn’t help but scoff. “Just being smart is not enough. There will always be someone smarter.”
“Jean knows what he is doing,” Connie repeated stubbornly. “He’ll be fine.”
Maybe, he will, maybe, he won’t. At the end of the day, Levi had no say about it. He might call them brats, but they were already adults. They were allowed to do as they wished. They were bound to make some mistakes.
“Tell him to be more careful. Otherwise, you’ll suffer too.”
Levi left it at that, not wanting to antagonize Sasha and Connie any further. Besides, it was time to open the bar, or the drunkards all across the block would start banging on their doors. Worse than that, Shadis might come out of his office too. His sour face was the last thing Levi wished to see.
“Let’s get to work,” he nodded to the kids, and took his drink to the dark corner of the room, where he usually spend his shifts, waiting until the patrons start making a mess he’d have to clean.
Surprisingly, the evening came and went, but there was no mess for him to deal with. No one vomited, no one shitted all over the toilets. No one spilled their beer on the floor, or even a table. Were their patrons starting to learn how act like people, and not pigs? Or were they so well-behaved because it was just the beginning of a week? Or did the heat finally get to them and turn them just as slow and tired as Levi himself felt?
However, the weather was more merciful that day. The temperature was still high, too high for Levi’s taste, but just after the sunset the wind was starting to pick up, the storm slowly brewing. During the smoke break outside the bar, Levi could see the lightening, illuminating the far edge of the sky. The rain was in the air, and he allowed his lips to curl up in a pleased smile. Perhaps, he’d finally be able to sleep through the whole night and not toss and turn, feeling like the bed turned into a scorching pan.
When he went back inside, the bar was almost empty, just a few regulars left, nursing their half-finished drinks.
“Do you want to have pizza or sushi?” Sasha asked, as he started sweeping the floor. “We can order both if you wish.”
Levi rolled his eyes with a disgusted tsk. “Eating so much takeout is unhealthy. Let’s finish here and go to supermarket. I’ll cook you something decent.”
Connie yelled a loud yahoo, while Sasha squeezed him in a suffocating hug. The heartwarming moment was cut short, when the door to the bar was thrown open with a loud bang.
It let inside the gush of wind and drops of freezing rain. With a broom still in his hands, Levi turned sharply to the door, ready to rip the unlucky drunkard a new one, the bar had closed almost an hour ago, the sign was right there for everyone to see.
All harsh words died on the way between his throat and his tongue. Levi froze on the spot, and in the silence that followed the lightning strike was as sudden as a gunshot.
Sasha’s distressed cry and Connie’s shocked sob put him out of the stupor.
Throwing the broom away, Levi moved, catching the falling, bloodied boy into his arms.
“Jean!” Sasha was the first one of the two to snap out of it. She ran to Levi, with trembling hands lifting up her friend’s face.
“What the fuck had happened?” Connie kneeled next to them, his eyes wide and scared as he stared at Jean.
Jean looked awful, there was no way around it. His cheeks and jaw were bruised, his right eye was already swollen, and his light brown hair had too much red in it.
“I’m sorry,” he croaked out, too weak and injured to offer something more than a shaking whisper. “I’m sorry, I’ve fucked up, I didn’t know where to run and now they’re coming here, I didn’t mean to do this, I didn’t think, I—”
He could continue that nonessential ramble for the rest of the night. But if they, whoever those they were, were truly coming, Jean and his friends didn’t have that much time. Carefully, Levi lifted Jean’s arm, wincing when he saw that the boy’s shirt was bloodied too, and threw it over Connie’s shoulder. Then he took the key from the back pocket of his shorts and thrusted it into Sasha’s palm.
“Take him to my room in the motel.”
“And you?”
Levi pushed the hair away from his face, already hating himself for his next words. Kenny was right, he cared too much, and it was his biggest weakness, one that would probably get him killed one day. Perhaps, that day had already arrived.
“I’ll stay here and buy you some time.”
“No!” Jean protested, frantically grabbing Levi by the elbow. “It’s my fuck up, you shouldn’t get involved, you don’t know—”
“I do know. And unlike you, I can actually take care of myself.”
Perhaps, he was too harsh, but it was necessary. Jean had fucked up, and whatever he had done, he had to own that mistake and learn from it. That was the only way he would survive through another one of his mistakes.
“Hurry up,” he told Sasha and Connie. “I’ll meet you as soon as I’m finished.”
Thankfully, they didn’t try to argue. Connie wished him luck and Sasha made him promise to come back, and that was it.
As soon as they had left, Levi hopped behind the bar counter to pour himself a shot of whiskey. He lighted up a cigarette, waiting for the front door to swing open and Jean’s persecutors to arrive. Hopefully, they’d do it without guns blazing.
He was just finishing the first glass and was thinking of getting himself a second one, when the mighty kick almost as loud as the thunder outside pushed the door open. Three men tumbled inside a second later, their faces transformed by fury into caricature masks.
“Where is that son of a bitch?” roared one in the middle, their leader, Levi assumed.
Levi was in no hurry to answer. He took the last drag of the cigarette, meticulously put it down against the surface of an ashtray. Then looked at the men in front of him. “The bar is closed. There is no one here but me.”
“Stop fucking with us!” the asshole on the left shouted. “We saw him run inside!”
“If that fucker isn’t here, perhaps we should look around for his friends,” the third man offered. “I know they’re working here.”
So there was no way around it? Levi sighed, walking from beyond the counter. “Just so you know,” approaching the men, he cracked his knuckles. “I don’t condone violence.”
One of the thugs started laughing, the other two immediately followed. Levi didn’t expect any other reaction. The men were burly, large, they definitely weren’t smart.
“What are you going to do to us, midget? Do you seriously think you can beat us up?”
The insult was followed by a punch, a careless, blundering one. Levi effortlessly dodged it, delivering a vicious kick to the stomach of his attacker. The man - who upon the close inspection had yellow teeth and reeked of cheap alcohol – staggered. He caught himself at the last second, holding onto nearest table with white-knuckled desperation. Levi hit again, this time with his knee. With a gasp that turned into a groan, the man fell onto the ground.
Luckily, he stayed there, and Levi turned his attention to the other two.
The one who stood at the left attacked instantly, aiming his enormous fist at Levi’s jaw. There was an unfinished bottle of whiskey on the counter right behind him, and Levi grabbed it, smashing it against the man’s head. The resulting sound was loud, almost deafening. Levi tried to forget about the mess of spilled whiskey on the floor and let himself enjoy that pleasant sound for another moment.
That was a slight miscalculation on his part, because the last man apparently was armed with knife, and he swung it without hesitation. Levi jumped to the side, but wasn’t quick enough. The knife’s edge kissed his cheek, leaving a smear of blood behind it. A mere second later, the knife was in the air once again. Levi was ready for it this time, but as he prepared to take a swift step back, his ankle refused to budge. He looked down to see that one of the defeated men was back in the game, still laying on a floor, but holding Levi in one place. Levi quickly dealt with him, using another leg to kick the man’s head. It took him no more than a moment, but it was enough for him to lose sight of his last attacker. Whatever plan of retaliation Levi had, he lost it, when the knife embedded in his forearm, making him hiss and cuss. Irritated, he roughly grabbed the hand that held the knife, twisting the arm at the wrist.
There was a loud crack, then the even louder scream.
Not too elegant, but, at least, it did the job.
Yanking the knife out of his arm, Levi threw it away, allowing it to clutter on the ground.
“Get the fuck out of here!” he snarled at the men, who weren’t laughing anymore. On the contrary, their faces were panicked, frightened. They pathetically scrambled to their feet, pushing each other to get outside as fast as possible. “And don’t come back!” Levi shouted to their backs.
When the door fell closed, Levi slumped back against the counter. The spot on his cheek was tingling unpleasantly, his arm was hurting like a bitch, and the whole bar had turned into a mess – the shards of glass and spilled whiskey were all over the floor. The blood from his arm was creating a small puddle too.
Levi viciously cursed and grabbed a towel, making a make-shift bandage. It had to do for the time being.
One mess was dealt with, and now another was awaiting him. He’d be lucky if the dirty floor would be the biggest of his troubles tonight.
But somehow, Levi knew that it was just the beginning.
***
Levi never considered himself to be a philosophic kind of person, he never pondered on the meaning of things, never felt the desire to look at the problem at hand from all possible angles, never reflected on his feelings and emotions.
He did however notice that the small room he had rented in a shitty motel at the edge of the city never felt to him like home. It was a place to live, it had a bed to sleep, it held some of his belongings, but it wasn’t a home, it didn’t provoke in him the feeling of belonging that he found inside the walls of his and Kenny’s old apartment.
He spent a little more than two months, living in that shithole, and never once he thought – I’m home, never once he felt – I belong right here.
But something very similar was blooming in his chest, when he passed the threshold of his shitty motel room and fell right into the arms of Connie and Sasha.
Sasha started cleaning his wounds right away, while Connie rushed to get the new bandages for his bloodied arm.
“You should have been more careful,” Sasha chided, and, fuck, he really got adopted by a couple of kids just like that.
“We could have dealt with this ourselves,” Connie said, and then, after a little pause, added, “Probably.”
Levi hummed and resisted the urge to ruffle the hair on their heads. He didn’t have that much affection for the little shits. Probably.
Just as they finished, Jean appeared, unsteadily walking out of the bathroom. He stopped not long after, leaning against the doorframe. Patched up and cleaned, he still didn’t look like his usual, confident and complacent self. Now he reminded Levi of a puppy who was thoroughly and viciously kicked. His hair was now clean of blood, but the shirt was still covered in red patches. Levi would have offered him one of his own t-shirts, but… on Jean’s lanky body it’d look more like a crop top. Or a child’s shirt.
“I’m sorry,” Jean murmured, not meeting Levi’s eyes. “I didn’t know it’d lead to this.”
Yeah, they almost never know. Levi sighed, there was no point in scolding boy any further. He had realized his fuck up already, his buddies from the gang made sure of that.
“What the hell happened?” Levi asked, his back turned to Jean, as he went to prepare the tea for all of them. It would help to soothe some of Jean’s injuries, and it would also help to relieve Levi of the building tension in his shoulders.
“I… wasn’t quite ready for this life, I guess,” Jean sat down on a bed, covering his face with hands. “There is a guy I’ve been working with, he stole some drugs he was supposed to sell, and other gang members found out and decided to punish him, make an example out of him, but that guy… he was my friend, sort of? We hanged out a lot, and I just couldn’t see him get hurt like that…”
“Oh my god!” Sasha’s hands flew to her face and her mouth opened wide. “Did you get beat up because you tried to protect Marco?”
Connie snorted. “I see you’re getting over Mikasa pretty quickly.”
Behind his hands, Jean’s face started to gain color. “I just helped a guy out.”
“And didn’t even ask for a kiss after the heroic rescue?” Sasha teased.
“There wasn’t much time for kisses after the whole gang started running after us.”
“You poor thing,” Connie patted Jean’s head, sharing a mischievous look with Sasha. “Didn’t even get a kiss for all the trouble.”
The two boys started to bicker, and Levi watched the scene, feeling the pounding inside his head increase. It’d be a long, long night. The one he’d have to spend sleeping on a floor, because there were three brats in his room and only one queen-sized bed.
He raised a hand, putting a stop to the argument that was starting to raise in volume.
“Is the other guy alright?” he asked Jean, as he handed him a cup, filled with steaming tea.
Jean accepted the drink with a grateful nod, but didn’t answer the question right away, staring inside the cup thoughtfully. “He managed to get out of the city. The assholes that beat me up caught me just after he got on a bus.”
Well, that was certainly good news. The only one they received since the beginning of this evening.
“You have to run away too, preferably for quite some time. Those guys won’t forget about you so easily. Do you have a place where you can hide?”
“Well…” frowning, Jean rubbed his neck, “My parents have a summer house…”
“Excellent, does anyone know about it?”
“No, not even these idiots,” Jean answered, pointing at Sasha and Connie.
“Then take these idiots, because your gangster pals know, where all of you live and work,” Levi grumbled. “And get out of here first thing in the morning. Spend a few months in the countryside, wait until this shitty storm is over.”
“And what about you? Now they know about you too.”
What about him… good question. And a very easy one to answer. He’d have to change cities again, luckily, he already had some experience with that. Sure, it was an inconvenience, but… better than live his life and have to constantly look over his shoulder, or die in some dirty alleyway. Perhaps, he’d be able to return some day, when the tensions were long over.
“I’ll leave the city,” he told them. “Wouldn’t be the first time.”
“You had to run away before?” Connie asked, awe written all over his face. “So cool!”
“And you beat up all these guys for us!” Sasha agreed, adoration shining in her gaze.
“You aren’t just a janitor, eh?” Jean stared at him with narrowed eyes.
Levi saved from answering by a loud shrill of the phone.
Everyone in the room tensed, Levi felt his heart pounding inside his chest, a relentless boom, boom, boom. He wet his lips, his throat suddenly too dry, and stood up.
“No!” Jean grabbed his arm, stopping Levi from picking up the phone. Levi understood his panic, it was the middle of the night, who in their right mind would call him at this time? Who would call him period, all the people Levi knew in this city were sitting next to him. Unless, it was Shadis who got out of his drunken stupor and decided to have a friendly chat with a janitor from his bar?
And if it wasn’t Shadis, then…
Acutely feeling his every heartbeat, Levi pulled his arm out of Jean’s grasp. Swallowing that persisting lump inside his throat down, he put his hand on a phone handle. Slowly, holding in his breath, he lifted the phone and put it to his ear.
“Is your name even Levi? Or was that another lie, you asshole?”
That voice. Her voice. Levi helplessly fell back in the armchair behind him.
“H-hange?” the crack in his voice was heard and analyzed by a bunch of kids, who now all stood beside him. Levi waved them away, drowning out the intrigued murmuring, and focused on a person on the other side of the line.
“You still remember my name, I’m flattered, Ackerman,” ah, so she found out. Not surprising in the slightest, but disappointing nevertheless. But how did she find out? And when? And why she was calling now? And how she managed to obtain the number of a motel he was staying at? So many questions, Levi wanted to ask them all at once. He didn’t even know where to start. “And just a piece of friendly advice, next time you go into hiding, don’t go around asking police officers on a date.”
Well, that was one question answered. Only one hundred remained.
“Are you going to arrest me now?”
“No, unfortunately,” Hange bitterly replied. “I need you, Ackerman. For work,” she added, before Levi could get any ideas and just before his heart started racing like crazy. “Take the first flight back to city, if you don’t want me to drag you out of there by force. I’ll be waiting for you in the airport.”
Hange was going to end the call, Levi could practically see her finger hover over the button. Before she did, he cried out, “Wait!” and then, much more calmly he added, “What do you need me for?”
“Your uncle went missing. I need you to help me find him.”
The line went dead immediately after that. It took Levi another moment to pull himself together.
Kenny was… missing? Kenny, his ruthless, unstoppable uncle? And Hange was looking for him? Too much was unknown, too much was unclear, too much was yet to be explained.
One thing for sure, he wouldn’t find the answers here. Well, one problem was solved then, he didn’t have to change cities anymore. He’d just have to return home.
“So.”
Just a short word, but so much meaning was put in it. With a feeling of dread, Levi turned to face Sasha. He shuddered at the sight of her wide, shit-eating smile.
“Hange, hm?” she asked, twirling a lock of hair.
“Hange is your someone, right?” Connie excitedly exclaimed. “Your Mikasa?”
“Hange is his Marco,” Sasha corrected, earning a vicious curse and a middle finger from Jean. “I guess it’s all over with Mikasa.”
It was all over with Hange too. There was nothing with Hange to begin with. And there would be nothing, because apparently she hated him now. For a good reason too.
Fuck. Kenny, Hange, the brats, they all caused Levi a massive headache. And there was no running away from it, they’d find him whenever he ran.
Perhaps, it meant that he had to stop running. And come back home.
“Let’s go to sleep,” he told the kids. “A long journey is ahead of you. And ahead of me too.”
“You’re leaving? To your Hange?”
“Hange is not my someone, I’m just leaving,” Levi grunted, turning off the light. “Go to sleep before I knock you all out.”
Thankfully, they listened and got on a bed without a word of complain.
“It’s good that your Hange found you,” Sasha mumbled, already sleepy. “Maybe, now you won’t be so sad anymore.”
Sasha seemed to fall asleep immediately after, not waiting for Levi’s answer. Or, perhaps, she wasn’t interested in it.
Soon Connie was out as well, and even Jean, after a few of tosses, turns and more than a dozen pained groans managed to settle in comfortably and fall into deep slumber.
Levi didn’t get so lucky, the thoughts about what tomorrow would bring swirling in his mind and keeping him awake.
But, well… at least his melancholy and homesickness wouldn’t be a problem anymore. After two months of being away, he was going home at last.
Strangely, the prospect didn’t seem that thrilling.

erwin smith
After Erwin dies, he hopes is that, whatever happens after death, he gets to see two people again: his father and some day, you. Although he hopes he doesn’t see you for a bit as he hopes that you life a fulfilling life after he dies.
That’s why it’s so weird for him when he finds himself suddenly thrown into another life almost as soon as his old one ended.
It’s odd to him- he’s now in a life where the Titans are somewhat of a distant memory and the world is relatively peaceful.
For one of the first times in his life he’s almost completely unaware of what he should be doing with his life. No one from his past life is even alive anymore; no Levi, no Hange, no... you.
He gives up on any hope of seeing any of you again because, well, you’re all from the past. And he’s here, hundreds or thousands of years in future and complete unsure of his surroundings.
He tries to adapt, live a normal life as a regular human. And it’s nice for him. It’s peaceful. Not fighting for his life against Titans every day is actually rather peaceful.
Sure, it’s weird. There’s new technology that he is absolutely clueless about how to use and he feels out of place.
But it’s a whole hell of a lot better than the conditions that he used to live in.
Erwin spends his time studying and learning as much about now, and reading the records of the past, as he can. Most of his time is spent at the library with his nose in the books.
And one day as he’s reaching for one book about Paradis his hand bumps with someone else’s. He apologizes to the person and gives them an apologetic look.
Only to be met face to face with someone who looks exactly like you.
——
bertolt hoover
Bertolt dies with many regrets.
The look on your face as he’s eaten by Armin is burned into his mind. He wishes desperately that he could’ve apologized to you one last time.
He expects to find himself in some afterlife: heaven, hell, or somewhere inbetween. But he’s shocked to find that he’s in no where of the sorts.
He’s in a new body. It’s the same him, same personality, same body. But now he’s alive again. In a world that’s long been void of Titans and the war.
His first thought is that maybe he can find you but he soon realizes that that’s impossible as you’re most likely far dead.
He finds himself moping for a while and unable to move on. He knows he should live this life and not focus on the past, but he can’t help it. He missed everyone. You, Reiner, Annie, everyone.
He just wants to see you all one more time. Just one more time.
When he finally gets back on his feet and starts living his life as best as he can, he mostly spends his time exploring the world. He goes to all the different places in the world that he couldn’t when the war was happening.
Visits Paradis and is suprised to see how lively it is. But he can’t help but feel sad as the memories flood back.
As he walks around the towns he passes by so many people- happy people. Amongst them he couldn’t sworn that he saw your smiling face.
He just smiled and shakes it off. As much as he wants to see you again, you’re gone. You’re only a person from his past life, not this one.

They wished it happened again. people thought they (they = pieck, levi, armin - yk)—people thought they went crazy. out of their mind insane. They do often smile, when they hear their S/O’s laugh. They cry when they hear their S/O’s screams. They couldn’t save them in time. they were now dead. // now do keep in mind, that this all happened weeks after their S/O’s death. they felt so useless at the fact that they couldn’t save them in time. the one they loved the most...
Note: I DELETED THIS AND HAD TO MADE THE POST so... please like and share thank you. Also I'm not caught up on season 4 but I know what has happened so I don't know Pieck's personality, I didn't want to get her wrong.
Prompt List
Mastlister
Summary: their s/o passed, they blame themselves and other and sadly cannot cope.
Warnings: Death, Blood, Feels and Fluff Words: a lot just a lot
Levi Ackerman (Sadderdaze)
Tumblr media
Somethings never change for Levi losing the ones he loves left and right but why did he think that would change with y/n.
During the Battle of Shiganshina, Y/n was by Levi’s side the whole time.
They always was anyways, the lone survivor of Levi’s Squad after the 57th Expansion. Years ago, they vowed the loyalty for him then again 3 years later, till death did them part.
They both lead the group of soldiers to eliminate the Beast Titan.
As the Beast began to throw rocks everyone took covered in an abandoned town, after the first-round y/n and Levi resurfaced on the roofs.
They both noticed the beast was readying for another throw, yelling for the other to go bad into cover.
“GO BACK!” Y/N yelled into their cupped hands; they still couldn’t hear them.
Levi started to run to help them, only to be held back, y/n telling him there isn’t enough time.
Levi protested only for Y/n starting to push him back down to between the houses.
Suddenly, Y/n gave him a hard push on his back making him lad down on the ground. Looking back up to his love, their leg of in a now, missing part of the roof.
Levi quickly shot back up to help them out, grabbing their hands pulling as hard as he could.
“Levi… LEVI! Please take cover, you’ll die.”
“I’m not leaving you behind… not again.”
Levi had left Y/n in charge of his squad as he joined Erwin in the 57th Expansion. Nearly dying because of the Female Titan and protecting Eren.
Y/n pulled their arm away from him, giving him one final hard push in the chest right before the rock came pass them.
“I love you” they whispered.
As Levi flew back to the ground, he held eye contact with them all of his memories going through his head, knowing that this was the last time he would see of them, forever.
As for y/n, all their memories flew through them.
Late nights with Hanjie, mornings drinking tea with Erwin and Levi.
Levi… the night of their wedding, cake, slow dancing together, then stargazing. Oh, what they’d give to do that one more time with him.
Then they were gone.
Days later, everyone was concerned about the Captain. They could hear his cries and sobs when they’d pass his room. If you’d knocked, his cries would stop, and he’d stay silent till he watched your feet leave.
Every time Hanjie would open his door to bring breakfast or dinner, they could see the hopefulness in his eyes only for them to fall. Not like he ate till he was starving and knew he had too.
Years later, as Levi slept at night, he could still hear the whisper and cries of his love. That’s all he could hear ever, yet now he hid it well.
The nights he couldn’t sleep he’d walk through the halls of the fallen soldiers. In the middle of all the paintings, was Erwin. A gold frame shining in the moon light. Next to him was y/n.
They also had a golden frame and at the top were their favorite floor in their favorite color. Whomever painted it, Levi thought they did an amazing job.
The captured the brightness of their eyes, their gloss on their hair and the perfection on their hands.
Levi sat on his knees, lightly placing his hand on theirs. Wishing he could feel them just one more time.
BONUS:
“I bet you’re not popular with the ladies…” Zeke sighed.
Levi looked down thinking about y/n for the first time since the battle. “I was popular enough…”
Armin Arlert (When Will I See You Again)
Tumblr media
Most people admired Y/n relationship with Armin, never put a title on side thing but the two and others knew they loved each other.
And when y/n died… well it was hard on everyone.
Since Armin inherited the Colossal Titian he saw and heard y/n die with his own eyes or really with Bertholdt eyes.
They stood by Armin till the very end or what they thought was the end.
The two stood in front of the giant titan, directing him. The plan… they knew they were going to die but it was with Armin and that’s all y/n would ever want.
Bertholdt let out the burning steam, burning them alive. y/n’s eyes looked at Armin, they screamed and cried till nothing… black.
Armin on the other head was giving the Titan Serum, eating Bertholdt and becoming the monsters he hated.
From the second he woke from the shift, all he could thing of was Y/n.
Where are they?
Are they okay?
Then and dare he say naturally, the memories caved in.
Seeing through his predecessor’s eyes, he remembered his love burn to death. Hearing their caries and he saw them always looking at him.
He cried and blamed himself for their death, y/n thought they were dying together but Eren couldn’t let him live in peace.
“they died thinking they were with me.” He whispered.
He always tired to keep his resentment in around Eren and Mikasa, but everyone could here him scream in pain in the forest next to the HQ.
He used Bertholdt’s memories to see them together all the time, Sasha and Mikasa would become worried he wasn’t grieving well but soon like screams every night stop.
Instead, it was quite crying at night, which wasn’t any better for anyone.
Then they left to find the Sea, one thing that could make Armin come to peace with himself.
Reaching the ocean everyone would play and have fun their but looking down in the water, Armin could’ve sworn he saw his love looking back at him but alas he lost the sight as fast as he saw it.
He knew Y/n would and still is by his side everyday till death brought them back to each other.
Erwin Smith (My Kind of Woman)
Tumblr media
Everyone knew Erwin as a very stoic man, a calm gentle giant but with a heart and will of Iron.
And that was true, but that was after someone not one would talk about.
Their name is Y/n, Erwin Smith’s great love.
In 845, the Survey Corps returned from an expiation, but most do not know what happened.
“Four abnormals on the right wing!” some one shouted
Erwin looked at y/n who was smiling but still looking out for themselves and others. They looked over at Erwin and smiled even wilder.
Ever since training, Y/n saw bright side of things. It was their idea to recruit the Underground rebels.
In all most a flash of lighting, rain pored down soldiers dying all around.
10 abnormals flailing around, killing and eating people.
Erwin stared behind him, watching his comrades die under his orders. Then he locked eyes with y/n as they jumped off their horse as a Titan waved its arm at her.
“Erwin!”
Y/n yelled hoping he would turn and help them, and he did, yet despite the connection they had…
It was too late, they were harshly picked and swished, screams reaching everyone’s ears. Held above the Titan’s mouth their blood poured into then as the life quickly left their eyes they were dropped into its mouth.
If it wasn’t for Levi, Erwin would’ve been died too.
Ever second since then he blamed himself, knowing if he was just a little faster.
He paid someone to make a painting of her for his office, they were his right-hand person, but others knew it was more than that.
He would cry as quite as he could for years till it was small smiles or few tears while in his office or drinking tea with Levi or Hanji.
They both learned not to question it as it was a normal thing for the man after five years.
The new recruits would ask about the painting of a random person in his office, he would say someone special.
Yet it’s been years he would still become choked up that night.
Mikasa Ackerman (i wanna be your girlfriend)
Tumblr media
Mikasa and Y/n met in training, two people how just sat not needing to say anything to enjoy each other’s company.
Eating dinner, they’d just sit and watch everyone else bicker and talk, nothing needed to be said. Despite being Sasha’s sibling, the older one seem to get all the personality then again there was nothing wrong with the way they were.
Although being close to death of a many of times, they lived and slightly loved Mikasa and watched her grow into a beautiful women she was.
Over the years, y/n become more vocal not wanting to miss out on the moments they had left with everyone. They and Jean would bicker and laugh about dumb things, Connie and they would just sitting and reminisce on old times.
Then Sasha met Nicolo and well y/n had never more vocal about anything before.
“Oooooh the cook, he’s perfect for you.”
y/n would tease Sasha along with Jean and Connie, although Nicolo didn’t seem to mind, Sasha would turn redder than a beet!
Then the war came, Y/n didn’t leave Mikasa side unless it was to save their ether extremely brave or stupid sister.
As y/n and Mikasa run to Eren’s ad after killing the War Hammer Titan, Mikasa yells at Eren.
Y/n watches the two argue, as the War Hammer Titan stands tall and definitely not dead.
Y/n watches as it starts to shoot a crystal goop at them, Y/n wipps around slamming themselves into Mikasa, holding onto her and they both flay away from the now hardened crystal.
“thank you, y/n.”
Y/n only nodded, looking back at the crystal. Again, they themselves in danger for Mikasa but they knew if it came down to it, they would die for their family.
After the battle, everyone was on the air ship, Mikasa had left y/n with Jean, Connie and Sasha. They talked happy to see each other alive.
“You guys are really special to me.”
Next thing anyone knew, both Jean and Y/n heard rumbling from the entrance. Turning around they saw a little girl with a rifle.
y/n quickly realized she was aiming for everyone of the ship, mainly their sister. Running in front of the fire, trying to do the same thing they once saw Hanjie do years ago still the girl shot.
The bullet went straight threw y/n’s stomach; push through the pain they grabbed the gun from the girl. They butted it into the little girl’s head, knocking her out.
The adrenaline wore off, y/n put their hand on their stomach. Their hand covered in blood, they turned around to see their sister on the floor surrounded by their friends.
“Guys…” they dropped the rifle on the floor.
The word came out their mouth, everyone with tears in their eyes slowly turned to look at them.
Jean watched as the blood dripped from their suit on to the light brown flooring.
Y/n began to walk to them, waddling side to side.
Mikasa entered the room watching Y/n fall over into what was now a pool of blood. She quickly ran over, flipping them over sobbing.
Jean quickly applied pressure into the wound, but it was too late. Y/n looked up at Mikasa, their bloodied hand lightly touching her face.
Mikasa sat head on her knees, in between both Blouse graves. She could still here the raspy breaths, the yells of Jean telling them to stay awake and the laugh Eren let out seeing the dead bodies.
She’d cry at nights realizing she loved them more than a friend, she felt like a piece of her was now gone.
During dinners Mikasa would push her food around till she couldn’t sit and not laugh or sob. Armin had become worried of her, but he knew she just needed time.

Hi there! I love your work!! So I know this sounds a little niche but, could we get headcanons for a reader in a polyamorous relationship with Hange and Miche please? Hope you’re having a really good day!
NO BEXAUSE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEINE TO REQUEST POLYAMOROUS STUFF OMGGGGG 😭 ty for your service anon it means a lot 😔🙏
Tumblr media
hange and mike dating headcanons (canonverse)
zoë hange x gn!reader x mike zacharias
warnings: polyamorous relationship, and titans ??, reader is kinda innocent ?? like just easily wound up
also this is going to be SO fucking long and focused on hange for the first long bit sorry !
Tumblr media
btw this isnt rlly dating headcanons so much as backstory, how you met, and shit leading up to actually getting together i went so fucking overboard and went the complete opposite way of what you asked ill do a part two with ACTUAL dating headcanons if youd like anon just tell me and ill do it
- i think you wouldve worked for garrison originally
- in season one when hange started the experiments on sawney and bean thats when you would've met them
- you had been a big fan of their research studies for a while, so being in front of someone you thought was so cool was a little nerve wracking
- you had just became newly appointed as a captain for a garrison squad, being one of the youngest recruits to get the position, which also meant some people thought you couldnt handle the job
- you were good at telling others what to do, and guiding them when needed, you took over the leader role very quickly, you had to if you wanted to keep the position
- although you thought you were a good leader, others didnt
- specifically older members of garrison who thought because you were so young, youd be naive
- and since you were a garrison captain, you worked closely with hange and moblit during their experiments
- any request they made for supplies or anything, went through you and youd get it for them
- they needed more help ? youre requesting three soldiers to the experimentation zone immediately. anything they needed you helped with, because you liked helping
- hange had quickly grown fond of you, they were so thankful that you were so willingly to have your squad help them. you remember the brunette grabbing your hand and saying "thank you for your dedication to this project and to science !" while bowing multiple times
- as unsanitary and childish as it was,,, you didnt wash that hand for a day
- hange saw how some members of your squad treated you, and it may have irked them a bit
- causing them to rant to moblit while writing down research data
- "hange." "i just dont get it, why dont they say anything ? theyre so nice so why dont people respect them like they should-" "hange !" "what ?!" "youre writing down captain l/n's name on your page !" "so what ?!- wait what" this causes a night of bickering between the two of them 😐🤚
- when sawney and bean died hange was devastated. you had grown to like the section commander as a friend and respected them greatly, so to see their hardwork and research all go down the drain was hard
- you immediately went into leader mode and started ordering your squad around "listen up ! i want this whole perimeter checked and searched for any evidence to help us find out who did this." a couple members groaned, and one man, who was in his early thirties made a comment about it. "theyre just stupid fucking titans. we're supposed to kill them, not keep them alive for some freak to experiment on them."
- yknow,, looking back on it maybe you shouldnt have went off on them the way you did, but you did because not only was the man questioning your authority and orders, he was blatantly disrespecting a section commander. "i am your captain. i am your leader. you will respect me, and you will listen to me. you either do i say or youll be suspended and taken off my squad immediately. and that goes for everyone ! do i make myself clear ?" you shouted. the man who had talked back raised his eyebrows, youd never once yelled or demanded things be done in a manner like this, and it clearly shocked him when you stood up for yourself.
- a bunch of murmurs came from your squad and you dismissed them, but not before stepping in front of your soldier in front of everyone. "between you and me ? you should be discharged for not only your blatant disrespect and defiance to me for months now, but also for your innapropriate and degrading comments about section commander hange. you wanna pull some shit like this in the future, not just to me but to anybody ? you should kiss your position in garrison squad goodbye, since youre too childish to keep your thoughts and opinions to yourself. now grow the fuck up and go do what ive asked please." the man looked scared as he stared at you, no one had seen you act like this before, his jaw clenched as he nodded and walked off, the rest of your squad dispersing with him
- you didnt notice hange calling your name until you felt their hand on your shoulder. you turned around and saw their sympathetic gaze on you. "thank you for defending me. are you okay ?"
- you rubbed the back of your neck and answered. "honestly ? i feel kind of bad, like i embarassed him or something." the survey corps leader tilted their head back as they laughed. "youre so kind y/n, but im proud of you." the comment, although lighthearted, struck a cord with you
- a couple days later you were requested to meet with not only the section commander but commander smith, as well as your superior, dot pixis
- the meeting only lasted about thirty minutes, but hange had boasted about not only your leadership skills but also your knowledge and ideas on various sciences. erwin decided to offer you a position to work under hange, and dot pixis agreed to have you transferred to the survey corps if you agreed.
- did your decision have to do with your crush on hange ? maybe. would you ever admit it ? no.
- pixis explained to you that youd be honorably disharged from the garrison regiment before being moved to the scouts' headquarters in trost
- you surprisingly got along well with others there. working in hanges squad was fun, and even though you were demoted from a captain back to a cadet you didnt mind
- hange had offered to share as much knowledge as they could with you, which led you to be in their office (as messy as it was) after work hours
- and thats where you met mike
- well, got to know him
- hange introduced you two when you first joined and the first thing the section commander did was NOT shake the hand you held out for him but to lean down and sniff around your hair and neck
- your face felt hot as you stuttered over your words, thrown off by his,,, unique, greeting
- hange and laughed and lightly pushed him away, before explaining to you that thats just what mike did
- back to being in hanges office
- for nights on end youd stay up together in their office, two chairs huddled beside one another while you read through books of research, not just from hange but from published scientists and anthropologists too
- mike had started joining you two only three days after you and hange started
- he would stay quiet, but would sit next to hange making them be sandwiched by the two of you
- after that you started to notice him more often
- down the halls he'd send you a small smile, which you brightly returned
- sometimes he'd be in charge of training that day, and he would wordlessly help you position your arms to properly block or punch when sparring with other members
- then he started bringing tea when he would come and listen to you and hange discuss different theories, articles and information together
- you didnt even know the two were dating until you accidentally walked in on them in hange's office
- they werent doing anything dirty, just giving each other a kiss, but you had walked in on them with a stack of papers captain levi told you to give to hange.
- you kinda,, stood there, slackjawed, while the two pulled apart slowly to look at you. hange had a mischievous grin on their face while mike just gave you a blank stare
- you dropped the papers. the stack of documents levi tasked you to give to hange. you dropped them. How Embarassing.
- your face began to feel hot not just from seeing them but also because youre embarassing yourself by dropping the papers and just standing there like an IDIOT
- "uh,,, i- captain levi said to give you those documents you requested." your voice cracked at the end making you wince
- "you mean the documents that are spread out on my floor now ?" hange asked. you looked between them and the floor, then at mike, then back to the floor than back at hange. "yes." you said, and you could feel that warmth in your face spreading to your ears now too. "im sorry." you exclaimed, your voice sounding strained as you quickly walked backwords and closed the door in front of you
- you started avoiding hange and mike after that, and became hyper aware of everything that they did. they were TAUNTING YOU 🙄 you could feel it
- instead of small smiles in the halls, after you started ducking your head down when you saw mike, he would now give you head pats when you crossed him
- hange would let their hand linger on your shoulder or side as they shuffled past you during meetings or experiments, and would come closer than usual when handing you documents
- mike would give you teasing smiles when you got your ass handed to you during sparring
- and finally you were fed up ! did this count as workplace harassment ? you didnt know but you wanted answers ! so you went to the source, hange's room after dinner
- you didnt bother knocking, you just walked in with your eyes closed
- hange giggled, "what are you doing y/n ?" "making sure im not walking into something i shouldnt be seeing, section commander." "by that do you mean the kiss mike and i shared ?" "yes." "well we're not kissing right now." they said, and you peaked one eye open to be sure they werent lying, and they werent !
mike stood up from his chair and slowly made his way past you, closing the door. you took a deep breath before throwing all of your word vomit on blond and brunette duo. "so i dont know why you guys think teasing me like this is fun, but it isnt. it makes me flustered and nervous and feel weird and im not sure if it counts as abuse of power but i dont like it so it needs to stop." you huffed in a big breath of air after saying all of that, and hange rested their head in their hands.
"y/n do you have a crush on me ?" they asked. their voice was soft but they still had that stupid smile on their face. you could feel your face getting warmer by the second. your mouth opened and closed but no words came out.
" i uh, im gonna leave now." you turned around but hit something hard, and looked up at mike looking down on you, a smirk on his face. he put his hands on your shoulders and turned you back around to hange, walking the two of you over to their desk. he gave you a slight push, causing you to put your hands on the desk and lean on it, while mike kept his hands on you to keep you from running.
hange leaned into you, your noses barely touching. "i only ask because, mike and i have grown very fond of you." they said. you nodded a little bit, the tips of your noses brushing against each other.
"yeah well, id be a little sad if my superiors didnt like me, that would be kind of bad." you replied.
"can i kiss you ?" they asked.
and now is when your brain really stops functioning. thoughts fill your mind of mike and his relationship to hange. are they actually together or is it a friends with benefits kind of thing ?
"i uh, i cant kiss you." you replied, a bit breathlessly caused by both section commanders.
"why not y/n ?"
"well i'm not a cheater, or a homewrecker. i mean i assume that you and mike are together so, im not going to kiss someone in a relationship." you stammered out. this was making you very nervous, butterflies errupting in your stomach. you knew they were just teasing you, goofing around to make you flustered, but a part of you hoped youd be able to kiss hange, and maybe mike for that matter.
they chuckled a bit, before their brown eyes looking behind you to mike's towering form. "honey, can you tell y/n its okay if they kiss me ?" they asked. mike let out a small laugh through his nose before leaning down.
"only if y/n promises to give me a kiss afterwards." he whispered. he pressed a faint kiss to your temple, and you shivered from the contact. he was warm, very warm, and even though it was such a small amount of contact it did so many things to you.
you gulped before bringing your eyes back to hange. you looked to their eyes, and then to their lips, and continued that pattern silently in hopes theyd understand. you didnt want to be teased anymore ! you wanted something to happen.
hange got the hint and smirked, before leaning in again and lightly brushing her lips against yours. theirs were soft compared to mikes chapped ones, and the kiss was so slow, so innocent, it had you leaning in for more. it was a slow, lazy kiss, a kiss to test the waters, it helped calm your nerves, but also made your nerved explode with heat.
finally the researched pulled away, and put their hands on your cheeks, squishing them to pucker your lips, before giving a kiss to your forehead, nose and lips one last time. they let go with a soft smile on their face, and a blush of their own.
you could feel mike press his body down against yours, making your knees buckle slightly. he took his right hand off your shoulder to place it on hange's cheek, thumbing over the red pigmentation. he then turned your head up and to the side, before giving you a kiss of his own. this one was a bit more dominating, hard. his chapped lips scratched against your own but you didnt mind. in a weird way it made you feel at ease, having him take control of it, the same way hange did but his was just more, needy.
he pulled back with a shaky breath and looked at you before looking at hange. "so y/n," hange began. they stood up and made their way around the table, mike pulling himself and you up straight so hange could sit on the edge, pulling you in to stand between their legs. being sandwiched in between mike and hange made you so aware of them, and even though you were very new to something like this you felt weirdly safe and secure. "mike and i genuinely care about you, and we want to be with you the way that we're with each other. would you like that ?"
honestly, how could you say no ?

Save the Humanity.
Erwin Smith x reader
I hope you saw the end of season 3, bc SPOILERS
Tumblr media
TW : angst, mention of death
From the roof where Levi and the few survivors of the Shiganshina expedition were, you could smell the fetid smell of blood mixed with the smoke of the fires caused by the Colossal Titan. It was horrible to have witnessed such a carnage. You felt exhausted and discouraged. And even if you had achieved your goal with your comrades, there were too many deaths for it to be considered like a victory.
The worst is that behind the wall, Erwin had just led his men to their deaths, at the mercy of the Bestial Titan. You were praying that nothing bad had happened to him. He couldn't die. Not like that. You two made a promise before going on expedition, you had to stay alive for the other. He was the only thing that made you want to live, and you knew he felt the same way.
————————————————-
Eren and Mikasa stood next to Armin's burned body and begged Levi to inject him with the serum. But you couldn't let him do that. Part of you knew that Erwin was still alive and he was coming back. He must certainly have been seriously injured, but it doesn’t matter, the serum would make him regenerate and everything would be the same as before.
Armin is just a poor child, he didn't deserve to die too.
You took Livai's arm and told him to wait.
- Wait, Erwin is not dead. If he returns, he will need the serum. We just have to wait a few minutes more, please.
- Yeah, you're right, let’s wait. Levi wasn't always a friend of Erwin, but now, he couldn't risk losing him. So he agreed to wait for Erwin. If he ever came back, it was up to him to get the serum.
- Thank you. You murmured, reassured to be able to count on the time. You could feel it, your commander was coming back. Come on, that’s Erwin…
But meanwhile, Eren and Mikasa were going crazy near Armin's burnt body. They wanted their friend to be saved as much as you wanted your husband to be saved. It was understandable.
- YOU HAVE TO SAVE ARMIN!! Mikasa shouted at Levi, but he remained imperturbable, as he always was.
Suddenly, a young soldier named Floch from the garrison arrived, carrying the wounded body of Erwin on his back. Your eyes widened and your face decomposed. The commander looked really injuried. It was a horrible vision.
- He is still alive! We are the only survivors, save the commander! He just sacrificed hundreds of soldiers for the good of the humanity! This young boy seemed devoted to Erwin.
Of course he had to be saved.
You watched Levi, wondering what he was waiting for to save your husband.
- Levi ? You have to save Erwin...
- Yes, I know. I'm gonna do it. But he seemed very hesitant.
Eren and Mikasa were so full of rage that they could have killed Livai to get the serum and save Armin. You understood their pain.
You were holding your husband's hand while crying all the tears in your body. He was also holding your hand because you could felt a little pressure on your fingers. You’re gonna live Erwin.
He knew how broken your heart would be if he died.
- Erwin, stay with me please...
Your warm tears ran down your cheeks, and even though you knew he was going to be saved, seeing him like this just broke your heart.
Levi stood up to look at Erwin's body and then walked towards you with a sorry look before saying :
- I'm not gonna do it.
- WHAT?!!!
- You heard me (Y/N), I'm not gonna do it.
- But-, no, no, you can't! Save Erwin! Why?! You said you would do it!! What Eren and Mikasa could feel was even more understandable now.
- He's about to leave us (Y/N)! I'm not going to call him back to this hell! He can’t be a devil any longer…
The faces of Armin's two friends had just lit up with hope, but yours darkened with the horrible choice Levi had just made. You remained silent, Livai's decision was shocking and you certainly weren't going to let Erwin die.
You jumped on Livai, trying to take the serum from him by force. You were desperately trying to hurt him or just reach him, but even though you had the same strength, he managed to get you away from him.
- WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT?!! You hated him so much. What the hell was he doing?!
He was going to leave Erwin like that… If you rebelled again you would have to face not only Livai, but also the anger of Eren and Mikasa.
Just give up...
Your husband was still alive, but was now breathing more slowly. You were about to lose him and there was nothing you could do. Erwin said it himself, "I'm not irreplaceable", but to you, he definitely was.
Levi approached, stopping at your height.
- He sacrificed himself for the humanity, we have to accept it. I wanted to save him (Y/N), but before leaving to the mercy of the Bestial Titan, he told me that he could die. He knows.
- It doesn't change the fact that you are going to let him die… You said, full of resentment.
- I just respect his choice. We both know very well that he would agree.
Levi was right, but it was the most painful decision you could accept. Even though you hated him right now, you trusted him blindly. If he chose Armin, it was for a good reason.
You turned to Erwin, he had just opened his eyes. He seemed appeased, but weak. He was not alone, you were with him and you would always be. He looked at you deeply with the same blue eyes that made you fall for him a long ago. You had always been together and had been married for more than 3 years now. A sincere smile formed on his face.
- Don't leave me... You begged him.
- I love you more than anything… He whispered.
You shook his hand even harder. He couldn't leave you alone, alone in this fucking hell.
- No, no- You can’t die...
Still more warm tears ran down your cheeks. Your husband's hand wiped them away in a last effort.
- Stay alive (Y/N). Save the humanity, I will watch over you forever, and one day we’ll meet again my Love.
- I'm so sorry... I couldn't save you.
- Never be sorry, you're the best thing that ever happened to me (Y/N).  I couldn't keep my promise...
Your throat tightened, you felt very bad, feeling like you were choking. It was so painful, your heart screamed in pain. You put one last kiss on Erwin's lips. He was still there, he felt it. He gave you that kiss back.
He was about to left you.
Hange watched the scene from a distance, not wanting to interrupt your last moments together. Then she came, tapping you on the shoulder :
- He's he gone?
- He will be in a few seconds...
You repeated one last "I will love you forever" to your beloved husband and you burst into tears in Hange's arms.
Your heart had never been so cold.
This is my first fic! Let me know if u like it <3

OKAY. The Alliance.....
As someone who really hates that this was the manga’s endgame, the fan nickname “Cringevengers” is VERY apt for what Isayama settled for with this fucking finale.
There’s so much wrong with the victims of Marley’s rampage aligning with and FORGIVING the people who triggered Eren’s gradual descent into madness in the first place. And it’s an entirely unrealistic outcome even if they were uniting to fight an even deadlier adversary. Apparently it’s okay that you slaughtered thousands of our own if only after you’ve been encountered by the consequences of your actions that you’re REALLY REALLY sorry about it. For so long as it is convenient to get yourself out alive anyway, right?
I’m mostly shooting down Marley’s side of this debacle but here’s my take on the final eleven here. I’ll try to keep them brief.
Tumblr media
Jean Kirstein: Gradually became less important as the series wore on. I’m not even sure why the Warriors made it a point to rescue him from the Yeagerists. His connections to everyone, notably his active crush Mikasa just hold no weight in the ending. I honestly wouldn’t have mourned for very long if he died when Titanized.
Connie Springer: Most useless member of the 104th. No plot, no real motivations, gradually forgot about his best friend Sasha and barely had the reaction you’d expect of him from that atrocity. The dude has had the least impact on the overall story among the survivors of the 104th, and he should have died long ago. I will forever stand firm that it should have been him that died on that blimp. Connie would have been no big loss whatsoever.
Hange Zoe: She REALLY got done dirty in this season. Made out to look like a totally incompetent commander who failed to anticipate the Yeagerist coup against her own unit. Erwin Smith would not have been so late to realize what was coming. But even then, Hange was the only light left in the series at the end, and she ended up sacrificing herself for absolutely fucking nothing. Any redeeming value the finale might’ve had DIED WITH HANGE. The last good thing that existed in this series who’s name was not Levi Ackerman.
Levi: The only deserved survival in this series, and even then it does not feel at all fulfilling. Levi deserved a lot better for all the crap he was put through and all the loss he endured. And unfortunately, not even Captain Levi “Fuck You” Ackerman can save Attack on Titan from its worst villain: Hajime Isayama.
Mikasa: Went from the most badass heroine of the series to the most pathetically one-dimensional. We knew she wasn’t going to die before slaying Eren, nobody believed that for a moment I bet. But with how much she was defined solely by Eren, even as he committed himself to a literal holocaust, she might as well have died with him because Mikasa Ackerman ain’t worth shit without her crutch, Eren. She had the potential to be a far more interesting character but season four failed to realize that lethality in combat alone does NOT equate to a compelling character. And how many times did she express horror at the necessity of killing Eren? And what was the value of her royal bloodline in Hizuru? I get a headache just thinking about Mikasa now.
Reiner: Absolutely worthless in season four, all this talk about him having a split personality deciding between right and wrong between Marley and Paradis? Doesn’t amount to anything. Pretty much got replaced by his MUCH LESS appealing bitch of a cousin. He absolutely should’ve died in battle, as that was the only way he could ever atone for all the lives he took in provoking Eren, but giving up his. Reiner’s survival was most definitely NOT earned.
Annie: I don’t why people still love her. Eight years spent in crystal in anime time? Too little too late to be making up for her lack of character growth now. By the time of her return she is nothing more than a tagalong and should’ve been replaced by another character. She should’ve been eaten by someone and her Titan claimed by another inheritor because there’s literally no point to her still hanging about. And then there’s what she said to Hitch about the crimes she committed. Someone who says they’d do it again if they had to is not only clearly unrepentant, but is someone who absolutely did NOT earn their survival either.
Armin: “You became a mass murderer to save us. Thank you”. That is all. Also FUCK YOU, Erwin really should have been given the Colossal Titan. Fight me on that.
Gabi: Unquestionably the most UNNECESSARY little bitch to ever plague any form of fiction. Nothing Gabi adds is anything new to the series and the price paid to bring her into the main fold of the story most definitely was not worth it  There is no way anyone can take seriously the image of some stupid suicidal twelve year old with a fucking rifle standing among warriors she has somehow outperformed even though they are bonafide veterans with years on her arrogant little ass. Gabi’s story has no valid payoff in the end by this stage in the story and is the worst equipped to fight Eren by far. There are no remaining excuses for what she did to Sasha, and the ending did not validate either Sasha’s demise or Gabi essentially stealing all the focus from her opposite, Eren. Sasha would’ve been an infinitely more reliable asset in the battle having the same skill set as Gabi AND the skill to kill Titans. A lot of time wasted so we can see the little shit who sent Eren over the edge get rewarded for having inadvertently helped him to trigger the apocalypse. In short, she came out of the story almost the same as when she entered with very little consequence for any of it. Virtually unscathed. Seeing this stupid child stand among seasoned veterans from both sides with a big fucking gun might very well be the most ridiculous image to be found anywhere in this season. Her story sucks, her voice sucks, she is nothing more than a crass excuse to push Sasha out of the picture, and she screwed the human race. Isayama, you and Gabi can both go to Hell.
Falco: Literally a Chekhov’s Gun. He is an unnecessary inheritor of the Jaw Titan for the even more unnecessary Porco Galliard, making him the second replacement from the infinitely more interesting Ymir to whom he had no valid connection whatsoever. I’ve spoken more than once about how fucked up the Jaw Titan’s story is when you actually stop to examine how it played out, but from what corner of Isayama’s ass did he pull out this crap about Falco being able to summon Zeke’s Titan abilities on top of his Jaw Titan abilities through the spinal fluid he had been infected with? Far too late in the game to be bringing up a power that had not been hinted at before. Falco may be infinitely more sympathetic and watchable than Gabi, but that does NOT make him a necessary or even good character. And he is not enough to save the show from his worse half. That’s to say nothing of his need to protect a girl who recklessly put his life on the line because she had a death wish. Seriously, I don’t get the appeal of Falbi when it’s no less abusive than Eremika. It almost makes Zutara look more palatable by comparison.
Still a more deserving survival than anyone else on the Warriors’ side though, I guess I’ll give Falco that.
Pieck: She’s the Warriors’ equivalent of Connie. I mean look at her, she’s even standing in the background there like a complete afterthought, because that’s what Pieck is. AN AFTERTHOUGHT. Doesn’t receive a personality or name until the final season, she has no real motivation or backstory, she survives constantly despite being what is explicitly stated to be the weakest of the Nine Titans, even her last name is an indication that she is not meant to be taken seriously. If it weren’t for her cute design, nobody would give a rat’s ass about Pieck. And even then, I think the fans have mistaken her looks as equating to actually having a defined personality to match. Yeah, that’s what we all thought about Mikasa too back in the day. That’s a burn, by the way. And sorry Pikuhan and Jeanpiku fans, I am not going to play nice with you, there is no valid reason to ship Pieck with anybody, any more than there was ever any cause to ship Jean with Mikasa or to ship Chef Plot Device with Sasha. What was his name again, btw? Short and sweet, Pieck’s very existence is a joke.
I think it’s safe to say the alliance is just the final nail in the coffin for all the remaining survivors of significance in this series. There’s so much wrong with how each one of these characters were handled, from the beloved and loathed originals, to the newbies who Isayama was too eager to cram in too late in the game.
The only alliance I am interested in seeing is the one that forces Isayama to declare the entire timeskip non-canon.
This story ended with the Ocean.

Erwin’s Niece - Eren Jeager x female reader - Part 1
To introduce a new fandom to this blog, I will start with some Attack on Titan stuff I wrote long ago but couldn’t post here because this was a Danganronpa only blog.
Female Reader - Season 1 Eren - After Trost - SFW
- Admin Myah
Tumblr media
     "FORWARD!!"
The loud roar of the commander still rang in your ears and gave you a sense of duty and confidence for your first mission beyond the walls. An hour had passed since then, and so far, all had gone according to plan. Flares shot up on all sides around your group, signaling for your uncle to lead you all in a different direction.
On the horizon you saw an array of dark green trees forming the line of a dense forest. Anxiety filled your heart as you remembered the plan you were sworn to stick to, even in the face of death.
"Uncle Erwin!?" You shouted up to the commander from your horse behind him. The whistling wind made your soft voice just barely audible. "Commander!?" You tried again. He heard you this time, letting out a loud grunt of acknowledgment.
"Isn't that it, uncle? The forest!?" You yelled. His eyes widened, and he rose one stern hand in the air, signaling Levi and the others behind you.
"Hey! Slow, everyone! Slow!" Erwin growled over the wind, and everyone's horses cried out, screeching to a halt before beginning to gallop again, but at a steadier, slow pace. Your horse rode up beside his, snorting excitedly. "Thank you, dear. I wasn't focused." You nodded to him, a small frown tugging at the corners of your lips.
"Uncle Erwin, this is probably the worst time to be unfocused." You gazed at him with concern. “You're not usually like this... are you still thinking about it?" He did not reply, but merely looked away from you. “You need to stop that, it's gonna get you killed."
"Hmpf, you just worry about your own life, (Y/N)." You pouted at his harsh tone. "I'm sorry, please don't be upset... I need you one hundred percent focused today. I can't have you getting killed because you're not paying attention."
     "The same goes for you."
"(Y/N)...." He warned with a voice resembling like a mother scolding her child. He looked to the side into your eyes once again and sighed. "You look so much like your mother when you pout," he said softly, before turning his focus back to the ground in front of him. You looked ahead as well, your eyes feeling a tad glossy all of a sudden.
     "Uncle Erwin..."
"I never should've brought you. Never should've let you join the scouts in the first place. I told myself I wouldn't but-"
"Please, don't start this again. It was my choice so you don't have to feel bad about it." He only shook his head and your mounts sped up a bit.
"I promised your grandmother that I'd take care of my little sister and I let her down. Now I've promised your mother I'd keep you safe and look where we are. I can't fail again." You were glad you and your uncle were riding a bit apart from the group. He never would’ve spoken like this with anyone else but you in hearing distance.
"Erwin, that wasn't your fault. She died serving humanity and she fought until the very end. No one could help her." You made sure he looked straight into your eyes while you said these words of validation. He still felt guilty about your mother's death and he just wouldn't let it go. It wasn't his fault that her 3DMG broke unexpectedly. He wasn't even in Trost until it was too late, but he wouldn't move on.
"I just don't feel comfortable with letting you out of my sight in titan territory."
"It’ll be ok... I'll be with Levi's squad. You said yourself that that's the safest place for me." You prepared to branch off with Levi, Eren, Petra and the others as you entered the forest at last. Once you reached the trees, you wouldn't see your uncle until the journey back to the wall.
"No, the safest place for you would be behind wall Sina where you're supposed to be."
"Uncle Erwin..." a tear threatened to fall from the corner of your eye, "I had to join the scouts... I had to come with you... You're the only family I have left." It rolled rebelliously down your cheek. His expression contorted into one of restrained pain and grief.
     "(Y/N)..."
"Don't worry, Erwin. I'll come back. I'll be ok. I'll stay safe and I won't die... I promise. I have the will to live and I feel it. I'll fight for you and for humanity. I know I'm the only family you have left, too." His composure wavered for just a fraction of a second, and he refused to look at you any longer.
The truth is, you would've joined the scouts even if your mother was still alive.Your Uncle was already your role model growing up, but when she was murdered, taken away from you, you decided for sure that you needed to cling to the only love you had left, and that was Erwin. You had lived with him and the scouts ever since you finished training in the 104th cadet corps.
"Prepare to split!" He raised his flare gun in the air and shot it, plugging his ear with his free hand as the blast rang out. It was a golden flare, different then all the others, signaling that once the split was over, on the other side of the forest were the ruins of an old city that was destroyed when the titans took wall Maria. This was were they would make camp for the night.
Your steed whinnied as you pulled its reins to find your place behind Levi's horse.
"I'm here, Captain!" You called out and Levi nodded, taking your squad ahead. Eren rode close to your side, making you feel kind of uncomfortable. You looked back at your Uncle. He mouthed the three loving words that you knew he was too proud to say out loud, but he knew you needed to hear. You nodded and turned forward as his group of scouts disappeared from sight.
~
Beautiful, giant trees surrounded and loomed over you. You had never been past wall Rose into Maria, and after Trost you certainly didn't think you'd ever see it.
It was fine as far as these missions went. A quiet ride with no titan interference so far. Levi rode along quickly in front silently. You could sense fatigue in your horse, but she trudged on dutifully. You had now fallen behind Eld and Petra, and your horse was uncomfortably close to Eren Jeager's once again.
He looked over to you, a look of determination lining his features. He loosened up a bit though when he noticed you looking at him.
"This is crazy, huh? You nervous?" He grinned. You didn't answer, but merely looked down at your hands tangled in the horse's ebony mane. You didn't know what to say to him, or how to answer that.
To be honest, the thing that made you the most nervous was him. After the events at Trost, even though he had proven his loyalty to humanity, he still didn't know how to control his new abilities very well and you weren't sure if you were alright with that. You saw him in his titan form stomping through Trost destroying other titans like it was child's play... You still had nightmares about it all.
After watching your mother perish in Trost while you and the other cadets escaped, you were very uncertain about having a titan anywhere near you. And that's what Eren Jeager was to you: a titan. He was a ticking time bomb of anger that could turn into a fifteen meter killing machine and that scared you to death.
You didn't want to be rude to him, though. You were never really friends as cadets but you’d seen him around and knew he was a good kid. He was decent at sparring and moved well in his 3DMG. You saw his trial and he was obviously determined to help, but having him next to you made you uneasy. Titans made your bones shake. Titans ruined your life. Titans took your parents away from you, and Eren's presence made you feel like breaking down into an emotional fit.
"Miss?" When you didn't answer he became concerned. "Uh, Miss... Smith?
"(L/N)..." you corrected him, now shaken out of your trance.
"Oh, yeah sorry. I just thought since you were the Commander's niece..."
"His sister was my mom. She got married, s-so I have my father's surname. Y-you can just call me (Y/N) though."
"Yeah... (Y/N)" he looked up, remembering the past,"Oh yeah! I remember you! We've never really talked much, huh? I remember you handing Jean's ass to him that one day though, so you're welcome to be my pal any day!" He smirked mischievously.
"Haha, y-yeah." You laughed anxiously. You just wanted to get away from him, and quickly.
"Hey, brats!" Levi hollered from the front, "Shut up! Enough chat back there unless you wanna earn us some unwanted attention!”
You instantly sat up straight and alerted at the sound of his voice. Eren looked over at you, chuckled in slight embarrassment, then rode ahead.
A few silent minutes passed, and you were beginning to get a bit antsy. Fidgeting around in the saddle, you wondered why there were no titan encounters yet.
"The end of the forest is just ahead," Levi stated calmly. "Be on your guard. The ruins of that old town should be just beyond as the Commander said and after that, an even bigger abandoned city. Place could be crawling with titans."
His last words made your skin crawl. Again, you weren't in this for revenge on the titans. You weren't looking to beat other scouts’ kill count or build a reputation as a famous titan slayer, either. You just wanted to do something to aid humanity, and stay close to Erwin. If he was gonna die out here, you wanted to go with him. Trost had scarred you for life, and you never wanted to encounter another titan again. Of course, you knew that would be impossible out here.
"Follow Levi's orders, no matter what," you whispered to yourself, repeating the words your uncle had burned into your brain at least fifty times before the expedition. You looked down at your trembling hands as your mare followed the others and exited the forest.
Eren took notice, looking over with worried eyes.
     "You alright?!" He yelled.
"Left!" Your horse abruptly galloped and hesitated like a rusty engine before shifting left. You gasped in terror as to your right you saw the reason you were going left. Levi shot a flare into the air.
It was a small one, maybe four meters tall, and it just walked slowly toward the group. It's hands crossed over it’s chest and held onto its shoulders tightly, and it's short messy brown hair stood out against it’s sickly pale skin. It grinned widely, staring intently at you as you lagged behind.
"Cadet! Speed up!" Levi yelled furiously, his throat rasping with the strain.
You shrieked as the titan dove for your horse, and it screeched, leaping far ahead. You joined Eren as the titan fell on its face.
"That was too close! You ok?" Eren questioned.
      "Y-yeah," you panted.
"Damned things! Hey, you gotta shake that one off," he encouraged. "Just forget about it. Stay focused." You nodded shakily.
"Look, there!" Levi yelled back, pointing to his left, "Ahead and to the left, that cluster of trees leads to an open field then to an arrangement of caves just outside a city!" He pointed directly in front of him. "The city we want to camp in is way past that one in front of us! Should we get separated, avoid the left, that city is sure to be completely infested!"
"Yes, sir!" You all responded in unison.
Moments passed. Your breathing began to steady as the remains of what was once a fairly large barn passed by on your right side.
"Move!" You saw Eren's hand reach out and you flinched as he smacked the rear of your horse. It cried out wildly into the air and jerked to the left violently.
You spun around just in time to see a fifteen meter burst out of the barn, destroying its splintering red walls. Bits of wood flew everywhere and you shielded your faces as the debris showered down around you.
It chomped at the back of Eren's horse with its large teeth and a vicious, malicious smile crossed it's visage.
"Eren!" You yelled, reaching back for him.
     "I'll be fine, keep going!"
"Look forward, cadet! Keep moving, Jeager's fine!" Petra yelled
Eren's horse was faster then the titan, fortunately, but it was still on your tail as Eren rejoined the rest of you.
"Captain! Should we engage!?" Petra yelled out, but before Levi could even give the order, his horse was startled by the sight of two more titans that came out from the trees beside him.
"Damn it!" His horse kicked its legs and shifted to the side, almost stumbling. "Steady, boy, steady!"
Now with two nine meter titans and the one from the barn following you on all fours, you were starting to panic. Your heart was beating so quickly you could barely think. At this rate, it seemed like you'd never get to Shingashina for Eren to repair the wall.
"Erwin..." you whispered to yourself the only name that brought you comfort. Thinking of him calmed you down a bit. Memories of him and your mother and father flashed before your eyes. You retreated into yourself, a coping mechanism you’d often resorted to.
"(Y/N)! Get outta there!" Eren called from ahead of you. You snapped out of it just in time. The three titans dove to grab you all at once, but your horse sensed the danger before you did and dashed.
"Good girl!" You stroked the mane of the black mare as she galloped on, praising her generously for picking it up where you slacked. It seemed you had finally reached the town ruins, and the sight before you made your blood run cold.
"Oh... My God..." You spoke softly.
A horde of titans wandered around the town, and just as soon as they smelled you, they saw you. Now, at least seven pairs of titanic, hungry eyes in many ugly shapes and sizes stared in your direction. Some faster ones were already in front of you, while the bulkier, slow ones waddled toward you from the sides. The horses were running out of room to run as the titans circled in.
"Aghh!" You heard Jeager cry out. A crawling titan had leapt into the air, and landed with a thud right next to Eren, sending him flying off his horse. He landed flat on his back, knocking the air out of his lungs. A deep, choking noise rose from his throat. His horse landed farther away, and with a shriek of pain and a crack of its neck, it was dead.
"Eren!" You tried to ride over to his rescue, but a nine meter blocked your path, and your horse refused to go any further, startled out of its mind and possessing far more common sense than you.
"No! No!" Eren rolled onto his side and screamed toward you. “Leave me! Don't die for me - just go!"
"No! Pick up Jeager, (Y/N)! He's essential to this mission! If he dies, everyone who dies today dies in vain!" Gunther screamed, pulling out his blades. He waited for Levi's orders. You looked back and forth, conflicted.
"Hyah!" Snapping your horse's reins, you forced it forward. Diving under the titan's clawing hands, you reached down, grabbing onto Eren's outstretched forearm. "Ugh!" You struggled to heave his weight up. "Eren, you have to help me out here!" He grabbed onto your shirt and the horse's saddle, assisting you in pulling him up. Now sitting up fully, he held on tightly to your back as you sped off toward Levi and the others again, snaking through large trunk-like legs.
Levi's horse at the lead came to a screeching halt. Now the whole group was completely surrounded. Your horse stopped abruptly, almost smashing into his.
"What do we do, sir?!" Oluo screamed in dread of the encroaching peril. Levi deftly pulled out his blades in response.
"Engage! Take 'em all down!" He growled confidently. You reached for your blades as Eren's weight pressed down on you. He leaned back, reaching for his as well. "No! Not you two! Cadets, ride into the forest!"
"Sir! We must keep Jeager with us! We can't split up!" Petra attached herself to a nearby sunken-in rooftop.
"These kids won't last two minutes in this mess it’s too concentrated! You wanna keep Jeager safe? Well I say this is the best call! Now go!" He turned to you. It was probably true, it was your first time beyond the walls and you were pretty inexperienced, other then the attack on Trost.
     "Wh-What?!" You scrambled for words.
"You heard me! That's an order! Cadet (L/N), take Jeager and get the hell outta here!"
     "But-!"
"It's safer this way! Erwin will kill me if anything happens to either of you! Don't make me say it again! Now ride!" He roared. You knew him well enough to be able to that tell he was losing his patience, though his emotionless expression remained the same. He sprinted off of his horse and attached to the shoulders of a fifteen meter tall monster. When you just sat there, your hands shaking uselessly, you felt Eren's weight press down on you once again.
"The hell are you doing?! He said go!" Eren screamed angrily in your ear, before reaching around you to snatch the reins and smacking your already jumpy horse into motion. You shrieked, holding tightly onto Eren's arms for balance as your mount kicked up its front legs and ran at full speed into the trees behind it. Levi was right, it was much safer this way. The swarming group of professional titan killers had the titans' undivided attention as they flew around the air. Only one tried to follow you, but Levi quickly cut it down, nodding at you as you looked back at him over Eren’s shoulder.
     "Levi..."
“They'll be fine. Don't look back... just- just focus." Your trembling lip wanted so desperately for you to let tears fall, but you wouldn't allow it. Eren's arms stayed wrapped around you, holding the horse on track firmly.
You didn't know what to do now. You knew everyone's goal on this expedition was to keep Eren safe at all costs. He was humanity's hope. But how were you supposed to protect the titan boy that was much stronger, much faster,  and much more capable than you anyway? No one ever told you specifically that you might have to put your life on the line for Eren, but you knew every other scout would, and you weren’t about to be the one pathetic little cadet who didn't take that risk for the mission. You had to prove to the others that you weren't just a stupid kid that got into the scouts even though she's a wimp just because her uncle was the commander. You had to prove that to yourself as well. You could still protect Eren while maintaining a safe distance, right?
Eren did scare you. Titans did scare you, but you made a silent promise to yourself in spite of it all.
"Make my uncle proud..." you whispered, forgetting Eren was there completely.
     "What?" He asked.
"Nothing!" You tensed up, feeling the heat of his chest against your back again. It made you feel very uncomfortable, but you would just have to deal with it for now.
"A little further until we are sure it's safe, then we'll stop to rest.”

Levi Isn’t Dead!
I don't think many will read this post but I feel the need to throw in my two cents on 114.
First of all, how many times have we been left with a cliffhanger when it came to the status of a character? May I remind you the four months we had to wait on Reiner and Falco’s status? (Ch 101 - 104) I mean we had Reiner’s bite to give some comfort but we still had no idea if Falco was okay and if Reiner was going to let himself die. Actually there are a lot of times Reiner could have been dead. There have also been cliffhangers that indicated Jean was dead and that Hange, Molbit, and several other SC members were all dead (Ch 78) Not to mention Erwin, Armin, and Floch being presumed dead for some time.
Second, while it was disappointing that Erwin didn’t get much reaction after he died, there was plenty attention and care given to him and Armin during that decision making. Sasha was given more care and was not left to a cliffhanger. In fact, I can’t think of any deaths that were confirmed to be true following a cliff hanger. The cliffhangers are meant to cause distress and leave us wondering and wanting more, but as it has happened many times in SNK, they are resolved in one way or the other within the next few chapters, at the very least.
Each major character death may have head some nail biting lead up, but as far as I can remember, they always happened during the chapter. With room for reaction by other major characters. I’m thinking specifically of Sasha. We had the foreshadowing of her death and it happened without us wondering whether or not she made it. She was shot, cared for by her loved ones, and pronounced dead in the same chapter. Not to mention the continual love they show for her several chapters after.
When it came to Erwin and Armin, we saw the decision happen and were left with Armin emerging from his pure titan. We also witnessed Hange and Levi saying their last words to Erwin and Hange announcing him to be dead.
And I’d also like to point out that Reiner’s head being blown off was a cliffhanger for ch 77 and after some flashback in 78, Bertolt confirmed to us that Reiner was, in fact, alive! At the end, Jean questions if they are the only ones left alive. In this case, a lot of nameless SC members and Molbit did die in his instance, but I would argue that Molbit wasn’t close enough to the main cast for Isayama to give him more attention. Marlowe had a bit more attention which is why I think Isayama chose to show us his final thoughts before being killed by the Beast Titan. Even Reiner’s suicide attempt wasn’t a cliffhanger because it was a crucial moment in his character arc and was extremely emotional. It seems to me the cliffhangers are more for the shock factor than a character’s end and/or development.
I highly, highly doubt Levi would die in a cliffhanger like this, with no other major characters around to confirm his death. And I don’t think it would work in this frame of story telling to chalk it up to a tragic death to show how cruel the world is. We don’t need that to know how cruel this world is. It’s already been very plainly given, with several characters saying it in critical moments, and how many characters have had such shitty lives.
Levi has proven as a character time and time again how resilient and strong he is. Erwin Smith’s arm was chomped off by a titan and he still attacked Bertolt and freed Eren. Levi is humanity’s strongest soldier. I refuse to believe or even worry about his well-being. If we’ve seen Erwin be that strong, knowing how much stronger Levi is, do we really believe he’s dead? He’s obviously wounded, this we know. But he isn’t dead.
As for the closing chapter line:
Tumblr media
Based on what we know, hasn’t it essentially been confirmed Levi is not an Eldian because he’s an Ackerman? The Ackerman’s receive the power of the titans in human form, so it stands to reason that they wouldn’t be able to become titans themselves. Therefore, it would be wrong to call Levi and Eldian. It’s my belief that this line is, again, to add to the shock factor of the cliffhanger, but is not meant to confirm Levi’s death. You could argue Levi is the merciful man, because he technically gave Zeke a way to commit suicide (tying the thunder spear fuse to Zeke’s neck), and they’re trying to say Zeke, an Eldian, had a merciful death considering the fact that Levi had just said being eaten was “too gentle” of a death. But I don’t think Zeke is dead either.
We’ve seen Reiner come back from much worse. Although we also know that if a person possessing the power of the titans can chose not to regenerate. However I don’t think Zeke is going to give up yet. This line could also be referencing all the Eldian’s Zeke as killed, since we were just told Zeke considers that mercy killing. But I’m almost certain Levi wouldn’t be considered an Eldian?
A N Y W A Y S
EVEN if Levi has lost a limb, I’m of course upset about that, much like I was about Erwin losing an arm, but that doesn’t make either of them any less strong, significant, or important!! I appreciate and love the disabled characters of SNK because they are living proof of how strength doesn’t come from one place, and how much a single person can change so much! We saw that very clearly in Erwin, and we see it in Hange too.  We have seen how much Levi has contributed through his physical strength and incredible resolve. Levi has always been able to do what needs to be done and honestly? I think it would make a lot of sense for his character to actually lose some of his physical ability. We got to see a bit of that in season two, after Levi broke his leg fighting the Female Titan. But we know he healed fine.
A   L   S    O      considering all the focus Isayama is still giving to Levi’s promise to Erwin, I think Levi will get to do so. Whether it’s doing more damage to Zeke, or coming to his own acceptance or closure. Levi’s promise keeps Erwin alive. I feel that Levi will only rest when he feels he can accept he has fulfilled his own purpose to the very end. So long as Levi feels he has his closure, he can die. At this point my favorite characters of SNK are Reiner and Levi and while I love them and am upset over their turmoil, I think both of them should be allowed to finally rest. Like Levi let Erwin rest in choosing to save Armin. Levi knew life was hell for Erwin. While I miss Erwin so so much, and am going to hate watching him die again, goddamn does it feel better knowing he can finally rest.
tl;dr: I have faith in Isayama’s story telling to do Levi proper justice if  or when he dies in SNK!!!
Levi is not dead!! BUT When he is ready to go, I want him to get the rest he deserves.

XXXIV. Enigma
***
If those two letters that were exchanged by Section Commander Hange Zoe and Assistant Moblit Berner fall on the wrong hands by any chance, it would be quite normal, since it sometimes happens, depending on the people who delivers them.
What is definitely not normal here is the content of those letters.
You see, any person would think that what's written there is utterly rubbish, and not worth anyone's time. They'd send the letters back to the post office, wishing to never see those peculiar things again.
If only they knew,...
A day before Hange sent her response to Moblit's rather repetitive demand for suggestions, she and Levi were having a very private conversation inside Elvis Shunerman's mansion.
It all started approximately fifteen minutes after (F/N) and Ivanna left Levi alone in the living room.
Levi, with head still slightly throbbing with pain, was lying on the sofa, massaging his temples and fervently wishing for his torment to end. Honestly, that sudden and unexpected vision he just had about (F/N) and that raven - haired girl worsened his condition quite rapidly, and all he needed right then was peace of mind.
Which was never granted, thanks to the scientist who suddenly barged into the room, flailing her long arms about and screeching Elvis' name.
Levi clicked his tongue, cursed at the wind, and covered his face with a cushion, quite unaware that it was the one that (F/N) accidentally sat on thirty minutes earlier.
"Elvis!" Hange exclaimed with that shrill and irritating voice of hers.
"What do you want, four - eyes?" Levi said beneath the warm cushion, his voice muffled and very low.
"I got a letter from Moblit."
Levi slightly lifted the cushion and gave Hange a glance.
"Why are you wearing your glasses? I thought we're supposedly in disguise at all times."
"Well, you're not wearing your wig right now." Hange answered, looking at the disregarded wig not far from where the tea tray sat.
Levi covered his face once more. "Go away, Hange."
"No. You have to read this first. It's very important that you read this."
Levi finally threw the cushion away, hastily sat up straight, and stared angrily at the woman with his bloodshot eyes.
"Eww, Elvis, what's wrong with you?" Hange uttered, smiling and worrying at the same time.
"Everything! Now, where's the damn letter?"
"Here." Hange said, handing the letter to Levi. He just took it and raised an eyebrow.
"This has to be worth my time, four - eyes. Or else, I'm throwing you out of this house." he threatened.
Hange just shrugged her shoulders and sat on the other end of the sofa. Levi impatiently opened the letter and read. A few moments later, his expression changed from annoyance, to curiosity, to utter confusion.
"He wrote this sentence twice." he pointed out the said sentence at the end of the letter.
"Naturally." Hange answered. "It's Moblit's way of requesting immediate response."
"Really? What's so urgent about this?"
"Take a look at this,..." Hange handed Levi a folded piece of newspaper that she took from her sling bag. It was dated on the twenty - seventh day of June, which was two days ago. Levi unfolded the newspaper and began reading the article.
"Massive Massacre Frightens People"
By Aintnoqueens
June 27, year 850, Tuesday
The good citizens of the Walls were, once again, frightened, as another shocking incident occurred within the once peaceful place. Just this morning, a large number of prisoners were found dead inside the local jail. The Military Police is beyond baffled as to what caused the death of these men. Investigations are still going on inside the building, and until the mystery is solved, unauthorized persons or people who are not members of this establishment are not allowed within the prison perimeter.
Levi stared at the short article a bit longer before speaking.
"You don't mean to say,...?" he muttered.
"Exactly."
"Are you implying that some guard dog of a nobleman went wild and started killing scumbags?"
"Not literally. Quite close, actually. Have you figured out who the Shepherd is?" Hange said, pointing at Moblit's letter that was left on top of the table by Levi.
Levi gave Hange an expression so unreadable that it actually made the woman confirm that the man has finally taken her seriously.
"That couldn't be,..." Levi started and suddenly became wide - eyed. "It's Erwin Smith, isn't it?"
"Exactly!"
"So, his sheep?"
"The Scouting Legion!"
"And this guard dog who started killing sheep?"
"I don't know. Yet."
Hange took out her notebook from her bag and opened it, showing its contents to her companion.
"These are the names of the people who died inside that prison."
"How the hell did you obtain that amount of information?" Levi said, staring at some names that were written in the grimy pages of the notebook.
"Don't ask. Anyway, these names, do they ring a bell or not?"
"Of course not!" Levi barked at her face, so annoyed after being asked such an obvious question.
"Exactly! Almost nobody knew them. Except, maybe, Kristoph Sutherland. I hope you haven't forgotten that name just yet."
"Sutherland? You mean that piece of shit who almost killed (F/N)?"
"Yes."
Once again, Levi's eyes widened. Does that mean?
"Levi, these are the remaining members of Sutherland's cult! The cult of royal fanatics that was dedicated into wiping out the entire Ackerman clan! Why did they suddenly die? And all at the same time?"
"Unless they were murdered by someone."
"The guard dog! Just recently, I've heard of a massive massacre in an inn not far from where the Headquarters is. All occupants were shot to death for an unknown reason. And don't forget Sutherland's passing just last month. Don't you find it suspicious? What if these deaths are all connected?"
"It's fishy enough. Of course, they're all connected. The question is; what exactly is the reason of this nobleman for allowing his guard dog to go on a murdering rampage?"
"What is the last thing you've heard Sutherland mumbling proudly about?"
Levi had no idea that his eyelids could allow his orbs to widen even more.
"About getting rid of the Ackermans."
"Which is a known fact by these prisoners before biting the dust. Levi, the sheep that Moblit has written about, they're not just Soldiers of the Legion. It's Erwin's personal squad."
"The same squad who went with him to investigate the cult."
"And the same squad who saved you and (F/N) from getting killed that day in the Trost marketplace! Levi, just like Erwin and us and those prisoners, they KNEW the secret of the cult! They are MOST DEFINITELY NEXT on the hit list!"
Levi was no longer able of speech after what he just heard from Hange.
"And, do you know who else knows the secret aside from us, Erwin and his squad, and the prisoners?"
Levi did not need to mention who. He just knew who it is.
"Shit." he simply uttered.
Hange threw her notebook on the table and covered her eyes.
"Now, I know why Erwin brought her here, and in Nile Dawk's house of all places." Hange muttered stress-fully.
"He's trying to protect her." Levi said, still not able to believe everything that was discussed. But, killer - related kidnapping or not, he still despised him after what he did to (F/N). "That bastard. Why didn't he just tell us in the first place? We're all screwed, anyway."
"I don't know. Maybe he has another motive? You know the man. He's always planning ahead of us."
"You said he's been evading the migration grant for years now. Why do you think he accepted it now of all times?"
"The migration grant gives you the right to be a noble." Hange answered, then finally realized something. "The Winter Season! There will be a Winter Season Ball coming up in December where all the nobles would be gathered! Do you think that - ?"
Levi just nodded. He understood perfectly.
All the nobles would be gathered there.
Including the one who set the guard dog loose.
"Hange, think of a clever way to disable (F/N) within a week from now." Levi ordered. "She must not attend that Ball,..."
At all cost,...
