If you've ever come out to the Pacific Northwest, especially west of the Cascades, you may have noticed that many roadsides and open lots are absolutely choked with blackberry thickets. Yes, the berries and leaves are edible, as with other Rubus species. But Himalayan blackberry--which is actually from Armenia--is an exceptionally aggressive invasive species here. And, as with many other invasive species, it was intentionally brought here with zero thought as to what ecological impact it would have.
Luther Burbank had this idea to breed vegetables and fruits that had superior flavor and which would be able to survive being shipped over rail across the country. Unfortunately, he was also a eugenicist who decided that the same principles of breeding for the "best qualities" should also be applied to our own species--and he wasn't alone in his opinion at the turn of the century.
It's definitely for the best that he never got around to putting that particular odious idea into practice. But it makes me feel just a little more satisfied when I'm able to successfully oust one of his pernicious blackberry canes from the ground--symbolic of good riddance to bad rubbish.

So who is the sketchy traveler?
For a while now I have been getting to know a character called the Sketchy Traveler. This began before the pandemic, but during the isolation of lock down he took on new dimensions in doodles and ramblings in my journal. I often find it difficult to share this creative side of me, but as I have gotten to know the Sketchy Traveler, I realized that I find it easier to express my playfulness and joy…

hii, e, hope ur sleeping soundly. 📚🍬🔪 for the asks if you want
thank youu, i slept ok lol
📚 ⇢ what's the last thing you wrote down in your notes app?
i added a film (the hours) to my list of things to watch last night, because it was mentioned in the book i'm currently reading
🍬 ⇢ post an unpopular opinion about a popular fandom character person
i guess i have a few 'unpopular' opinions wrt the 1d guys' solo music. one of them is that niall is lowkey my fave vocalist out of them 5, even though i don't always vibe with his music. and that i think h has the least appealing voice out of them (even though i do vibe with some of his music) (also that one might not be that unpopular depending on who you're asking lol)
🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
in recent months, i guess i did quite a deep dive into some topics for my 'tree fic', including:
which trees can be found in kensington gardens
what are some of the forests around eugene, oregon
what are some of the main cool things you can see at the natural history museum in london
where are giant sequoia groves located, and which one is closest to san francisco
when did trees first appear on earth
and for another fic:
when were scissors invented
which rose varieties are the darkest
but none of those things are that weird i guess 🤷

Yapoah (Very High Place). This is the tallest building in Eugene at 18 stories.
It sits at the base of Skinner Butte. You can just see the large O for the University of Oregon and the edge of the parking lot at the top.
That is the gothic architecture Shelton-McMurphey house on the left there. It is open for tours and an amazing place to visit.
I took this photo with the DJI Mini Pro 4 drone from the garden plot area on the lower left down there. Whee, love the bird's eye view.

September 19th, Coburg
Yesterday we left Boise early as we had 6 hours of driving across eastern Oregon to get to Sisters. The far eastern part of Oregon along US20 is very pretty with the road following river canyons.
Then you pop into high desert, not as pretty and today was smoky.
Got to Sisters Garden RV park in the afternoon. Pretty park but they don't trim their trees and they have narrow roads. Not fun in a big rig.
We had friends over for dinner which was nice. However, I never got pictures of the park as we were busy.
Today we took 126 to Eugene and then to Coburg. Nice drive, there were several wildfires in the area. Saw smoke, helicopters 🚁 on the ground, and several staging areas but no fire. Cool today and yesterday so they probably are getting them under control
Arrived at Premier in Coburg just before noon and got our usual spot.
The rig had no issues with the dash so I am thinking I fixed it. Tomorrow the truck goes to the Ram dealer to figure out its issue.

Home Again, Home Again
We're back in our own digs once again, back to a bed that's comfortable and pillows that actually support our heads.
Granted it was nice being housed apart from the rest of Nancy's family, given the pets and the clutter and the noise from the ongoing repairs to the roof of the dome in which the live.
But there were a few minor inconveniences to the guest cottage that we will not miss now that we are home where (almost) everything is comfortable.
What we will miss is the Oregon weather. After the initial heat and smoke from numerous fires in the area, the weather finally turned more seasonal and there were cool nights and mild days and the occasional sprinkles.
With the use of Nancy's granddaughter's car, I got out to a few more recovery meetings, and Nancy and I did a little wandering about Eugene one afternoon, stumbling across a rose garden near the Willamette River.
The flights home were without problems, and the change in Phoenix could not have been more easy, given that we came in from Eugene at Gate A4 and departed for Tucson from Gate A6. Plus our luggage made it from one plane to the other on time.
After dropping off our luggage and greeting our cats, we turned right around and went to dinner at our local Mexican food spot. The enchilada plate I normally consume entirely was too much for me, a measure of how small our meals have been over the past three weeks. Half of it came home in a box.
Of course we will be kicking off today with plenty of chores, including refilling our water bottles, doing a bit of grocery shopping, and helping out at church with the counting and bread ministry.
Tucson's weather, unfortunately, returns to extreme over the next week or so, with the temperatures topping out during the coming weekend over 105º. At least we have good air conditioning and a comfortable bed.

Last Year First
Well here we are the last day of the first month of 2023. This year sure started off very different from 2022. Ringing in 2022 we had friends over, we (again) lit off our wedding sparklers and Elise was 6 months away from giving birth to our first son Noah. We also did our traditional New Year's Day walk and even mixed in some Frisbee golf.

2022 was a year full of firsts for the Hansen family. As we were preparing for the birth and life change of becoming parents we started looking for a place to call our own. We really liked where we were in our duplex. We had nice neighbours, it was a nice area, it was also close to a river we regularly swam in. It was also close to work and things we need. However, it wasn't close to where we spent most of our time or our friends. In April a house came up that we really liked and we put in an offer and it became our very own home.

I believe we got keys the 6th of April 2022 and were moved in that weekend with the help of our friend family. We moved in just in time as it snowed the day after.

After we had a little party to find out whether we were having a boy or a girl...

...we started doing some house projects to make the place ours and get it set up for when family would come to visit for Elise's baby shower.
So far I have put in a brand-new fence on one side of the house (it didn't have a fence at all) and taken down the broken one on the other side and made it to match. Done some outside work for an in ground garden. We've done some painting. Most importantly we fixed up the room for the little guy.

Our next first came in June with the birth of our wee little human. 12 days early! We were so excited!! Noah Jamison Hansen came on 17th June 2022. What a treat! What a joy! Born on the same day as my aunt Darcy and my best friend from school days mister Dan the man Sagaser! Being a parent has never been sweeter. Noah is now just over 7 months (at the time of this writing) and life has never been so beautiful.

The next first for the Hansen household came in October 2022 when I ran a marathon with my good mate Tag in Medford Oregon. I wrote about the experience here (https://www.tumblr.com/fishoutofwaterlikeabird/700127168240435200/we-ran-a-marathon?source=share). I also made a video of the adventure here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aEw5Sj_ndw). What an experience it was. One, I wasn't sure I would want to do again, but have actually decided to do in April of this year (2023) in Eugene, Oregon and with my mate Tag and a couple others. This time I am not just doing it for myself. I am actually running for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. You can read more about it here if you like (https://charity.pledgeit.org/f/ZIfuySVkcF).

The rest of the year has brought on many new things with our little human. Elise went back to work three months after Noah was born. I went back a month after. Being working parents has been challenging, but very manageable. It is also so fun to see Noah light up when one of us walks in the door and he sees us.
Not long after I went back to work, I switched jobs. Elise working four days a week nearly 8-5 and me working five days a week 8-5 was not working well for us with a little one. I went back to working in a school and also started school to finish up getting my bachelors degree in teaching. Adding back our volunteer commitments, work, school (for me) and a toddler has made life quite full on.
As the year came to a close we celebrated holidays with him for the first time (with friends and family), he began to notice us and things around him more, he is laughing and smiling way more, eating real food for the first time and going from being stationary to "power crawling" all over the house. Life is so great!! I couldn't imagine anything better.

As 2022 has finished and the first month of 2023 is almost over it has been fun seeing Noah learn and do new things. It has been great to see when he wants something he crawls over to it. It has been exciting to see him pull himself from sitting to a stand. He is sure to be standing and walking soon which will mean more new and exciting things coming in life. Life is so busy, but it is a great busy. Something we wouldn't change for anything.

As we look forward to so many new fun and exciting changes in life, we are so grateful for the blessings we have been given. This year we will get to see family that Elise and Noah haven't met yet. We will celebrate having a one-year-old in the house and I am sure there will be many new adventures with our little family, more house projects, fun and laughs along the way.
