What is Exit Poll?

Introduction

Election Exit polls are used all over the world to predict the probable outcome of elections. An election exit poll is a poll of voters taken immediately after they have exited the polling stations, hence the name Exit poll. When voters exit from election polling booths as their memory is fresh, they are most likely to share the truth. An exit poll asks voters which political party they are supporting after they have cast their votes in an election. These polls can be conducted face to face or online.

It is important to note that election exit polls are not conducted by any government agency. Pollsters from private companies working for newspapers or broadcasters usually conduct exit polls to gain an early indication as to how an election has turned out, as in many elections the actual result may take many hours to count.

Important parameters for a good/accurate exit poll depend on; 1. Large and diverse sample size and 2. A clearly constructed questionnaire with no bias.

Exit polls are out for the 2023 Ohio election where, as you've doubtless heard by now, the broadest, most daring, every stretch goal included reproductive freedom law passed by a nice wide margin in a state that Trump and the Republican Party won handily just 3 years ago. (Here's a non-paywall link to the Washington Post article about the exit polling.) Two things jump out at me.

MAGA Republicans Only Care About Trump

I'm sure you're going to hear about this being heavily about Roe repeal backlash, but as a percentage of voters, the Republican share went down sharply, from 53% of the people who showed up to vote in 2020 to only 35% now. I've heard it said before and this strikes me as another datapoint that's consistent with the hypothesis that Republican turnout, since 2016, is entirely driven by whether or not Donald Trump is on the ballot. They say they care about issues. The only show up to vote if Trump's actual name is on the ballot. It's substantially just a personality cult now. Also ...

Only Old White Evangelical Male Married MAGA Supporters Still Want to Ban Abortion

Or, at least, wanted the abortion ban to go into effect badly enough to show up to vote for it. The exit polls listed a whole bunch of characteristics to check off, and the reproductive rights initiative polled above 50% in almost every category, except these:

Married men (48%)

Age 65 and over (45%)

White evangelicals (24%)

Trump voters (19%)

Self-identified Republicans (18%)

Self-identified conservatives (13%)

And even in a couple of those groups, the anti-abortion majority is pretty slim, just barely over half. And even in the groups that are most consistently anti-abortion, 1 in 4 showed up to vote to overturn the state Republican legislature's abortion ban.
