HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my dearest darling beloved angel‏‏‎ ‎BERNADETTA‏‏‎ ‎VON‏‏‎ ‎VARLEY!!!!‏‏‎ ‎honestly this piece doesn't even convey the depth of my feelings for her and if i had more time i would have written a fic but i was too busy with schoolwork to just crank one out (not that i have ever been good at just cranking fics out i agonize over those thangs) but nothing i say or do could ever really show how much she means to me in full. she deserves to be showered with love and gifts every day of her life but today especially! one million kissies.
the locket she's wearing is antigone's present to her--i imagine they agonized over what to get her because it had to be The Perfect Thing. they know she likes sweets so they tried baking something but that went poorly.
Tumblr media
inside of the locket is a pressed flower and an inscription <3 they also got her a new set of paints. she probably wouldn't want any sort of party but the‏‏‎ ‎black‏‏‎ ‎eagles‏‏‎ ‎would‏‏‎ ‎come through throughout the day to chat and celebrate a little and drop off gifts. modern au i think they'd spend the day at an aquarium or a botanical garden <3

Afropessimism, then, is less of a theory of more of a metatheory: a critical project that, by deploying Blackness as a lens of interpretation, interrogates the unspoken, assumptive logic of Marxism, postcolonialism, psychoanalysis, and feminism through rigorous theoretical consideration of their properties and assumptive logic, such as their foundations, methods, form, and utility; and it does so, again, on a higher level of abstraction than the discourse and methods of the theories it interrogates. Again, Afropessimism is, in the main, more of a metatheory than a theory. It is pessimistic about the claims theories of liberation make when these theories try to explain Black suffering or when they analogize Black suffering with the suffering of other oppressed beings. It does this by unearthing and exposing the meta-aporias, strewn like land mines in what these theories of so-called universal liberation hold to be true. If, as Afropessimism argues, Blacks are not Human subjects, but are instead structural inert props, implements for the execution of White and non-Black fantasies and sadomasochistic pleasures, then this also means that, at a higher level of abstraction, the claims of universal humanity that the above theories all subscribe to are hobbled by a meta-aporia: a contradition that manifests whenever one looks seriously at the structure of Black suffering in comparison to the presumed universal structure of all sentient beings. Again, Black people embody a meta-aporia for political thought and action—Black people are the wrench in the works. Blacks do not function as political subjects; instead, our flesh and energies are instrumentalized for postcolonial, immigrant, feminist, LGBTQ, transgender, and workers' agendas. These so-called allies are never authorized by Black agendas predicated on Black ethical dilemmas. A Black radical agenda is terrifying to most people on the Left—think Bernie Sanders—because it emanates from a condition of suffering for which there is no imaginable strategy for redress—no narrative of social, political, or national redemption. This crisis, no, this catastrophe, this realization that I am a sentient being who can't use words like "being" or "person" to describe myself without the scare quotes and the threat of raised eyebrows from anyone within earshot, was crippling.

Extremely stupid and contradictory question that I still want an answer to, but what is it that makes people want a dictatorship with progressive values?
For that matter, why is it that nearly all dictatorships are so fundamentally built on conservative/authoritarian ideals and values?
Why doesn't genuinely good values ever end up being the core value that gets enforced with ruthless brutality instead of people twisting themselves into knots to justify always sinking to the worst possible impulses built on hatred?
Is decency just fundamentally anathema to it?
This is one of those questions where you're actually asking several different things at once, and it will take a lot of work for me to explain and contextualize everything that you're looking for. However, I do think this is important to understand, so I'll give it a shot.
First, if I may point out, you've answered a bit of your own question when you ask "why don't genuinely good values ever end up being enforced with ruthless brutality?" I think it's fair to say that if your values were actually good or something that would broadly benefit the lives of most people, they would not need to be enforced with ruthless brutality. This is the case regardless of which ideology your totalitarian dictatorship is built on; i.e. conservative Christian fascism or left-wing old-school communism/People's Republics. Because a dictatorship, no matter which values it claims to use to justify itself, never exists to benefit people. A dictatorship exists to vest supreme power in one person or system and totally disenfranchise everyone else, and it is not, regardless of what some people on the internet in 2023 seem to think, a tool of social justice. Marginalized groups who have a hard time in a traditionally white/culturally Christian Western democracy will nonetheless have an orders of magnitude worse time under a dictatorship, as will everyone else. It is not something you should wish for under any circumstances, and also represents a naïve Western privilege where, having grown up with the unpleasant consequences of late-stage capitalism, people go for the fallacy that old-school communism must be better! Except it isn't, and when you totally blow over and ignore the objections of people who actually grew up under those regimes and warn you that they're not so great, you're just straight-up projecting and wishful thinking. It has nothing to do with reality or history or what anyone should aspire to.
The idea has existed in human society for thousands of years that if you can just get a "benevolent dictator" or "merciful autocrat," who can be trusted to rule with supreme power, do what's right for everyone, and get rid of the messy and flawed process of representative democracy that never seems to quite fix society's biggest problems. However: this doesn't work, it has never worked, there have been countless wars fought over this question, and it would certainly never, ever work in a setting as complex as the globalized twenty-first century. The Online Leftists who want Bernie Sanders, an old white man, to be their all-powerful dictator -- that is, uh, not the Social Justice Flex (tm) you think it is. And as noted, a dictator of any stripe is fundamentally anathema to actual progressivism or social justice, and anyone who loudly wants one (or thinks that the American president should act like one) is exposing both their profoundly immature understanding of the situation and a worrisome thirst for tyrannical despotism as long as it has "the right ideas." This has, again, caused countless wars and numberless deaths, because "the right ideas" will never be universal, universally agreed upon, or anything else, and if they're enforced with violence, you have -- again -- a dictatorship! It's not great!
In chaotic and uncertain times, people tend to want a "strong leader" who they can trust to just fix all their problems and relieve them from the burden of governance or worrying how things are going to work out. This was first articulated in modern Western political philosophy by Thomas Hobbes, who wrote his Leviathan in the mid-17th century during the English Civil War. Basically, his idea was that the people should democratically elect an absolute monarch/leader, who would then rule with an iron fist and retain supreme power, because they couldn't be trusted to govern themselves. (Hobbes is also where we get the pessimistic description of life being "nasty, brutish, and short.") Because things are bad right now, people likewise tend to want an absolute monarch of either right or left political persuasion, but these are both very bad options and should be equally resisted.
Democracy is flawed, imperfect, slow, cumbersome, and contradictory. It can be badly hijacked and corrupted (as we've seen in the last few years) by money, misinformation, bad-faith actors, and more. It is also still always, 100%, all-of-the-time preferable to a dictatorship. People still fall for the idea that having an absolute monarch who just "makes things happen" right away without the cumbersome apparatus of congresses or senates or supreme courts of judges would be "better," and totally ignore the massive and systemic disenfranchisement it would impose on everyone else. Especially in our current misogynist white-supremacist homophobic etc. system; the dictator WOULD be a rich white dude and let's not even pretend otherwise. Even if he made a play at being "progressive," it would not be true and it would not last. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, etc. etc. I do not want a dictatorship. I do not want to live in a dictatorship. I don't care what Good Intentions (tm) anyone has, because I think that anyone who wants to be a dictator or to live under a dictatorship has a very different idea of Good Intentions than I, or indeed most sane people, do. The end.
Yes, America is a deeply flawed country. Yes, it is built on systemic and ongoing racial and cultural white-settler-colonial genocide. However, where modern leftists struggle the most is the idea that two things can be true, because they're so deeply sunk into black-and-white, zero-sum thinking where if one thing is true, it rejects all the others. If we have a flawed democracy, the solution is to fix that democracy, not to just throw it out the window and cavil for an absolute monarch. You can be fiercely critical of America's imperialist actions, unnecessary wars, racist violence, and everything else while also realizing that if the first and oldest presidential democratic republic in existence was dismantled or turned into a fascist autocracy, it would be absolutely terrible for many, many countries around the world, and humankind in general. You do not have to subscribe to the nonsensical, navel-gazing tankie "logic" that America is the only country with (evil) agency ever, and everyone else in the world is just its helpless pawns. You do not have to subscribe to the idea that any work within the system, or accepting basic political realities, makes you a "bootlicking neoliberal shill" or whatever they're using to insult anyone who doesn't just live in their distorted bubble of self-righteous ignorance. You don't!
As I always say, the only people who really want a dictatorship are those who know that their ideas aren't popular enough to win a free and fair election, but think they "deserve" to be in power anyway, because etc. etc. My Ideas Are Better! (Spoiler alert: they are not.) This is the same whether it's the Republicans trying to outlaw elections or the Online Leftists who sanctimoniously refuse to engage with the civic process because it's "contaminating" for their Pure Ideas to make any compromise with reality. And yet those so-called progressives are utterly dependent on us Normie Liberals who actually vote against the rabid fascists, and are (just barely) holding the line. Because yes, in a liberal democracy, they do have the right to be sanctimonious, useless, toxic, holier-than-thou ideologues who sit on their asses and contribute nothing to the actual dirty process of change. But if the Normie Liberals haughtily refused to vote in the same way the Online Leftists do, the fascists WOULD be in complete control by now, and trust me, it would be grim.
To be frank, I think most, if not all, of what calls itself "Western leftism" has categorically and completely failed as a moral, political, or practical opposing force to right-wing fascism. Much of it is dependent on savagely backbiting even those people who already agree with you, refusing to take basic steps to enact change even incrementally (i.e. voting), and attacking the establishment liberal party, i.e. the Democrats in America, while vocally supporting foreign dictatorships as long as they're "anti-American" or ancestrally "socialist." We've seen the utter failure of Western leftists at developing a moral stance on Ukraine, a consistent opposition to Trump, or pretty much anything else that requires them to come down from their high horses and accept a more complex reality than their abstract purity tests or outright nonsensical clichés. And when you're attacking the Democrats nonstop and backing foreign dictatorships, that is, uh, pretty much the exact same thing that the fascist Republicans are doing. Which means both of these groups are profoundly and dangerously anti-democratic, anti-liberal, anti-intellectual, and anti-humanity. There's no way around it.
In short, so-called "progressives" want a dictatorship because they too have given up on democracy, don't believe that people at large are as "smart" as they are, and don't want actual praxis or the effort of making change within a flawed democracy. They subscribe instead to the magical thinking that an absolute monarch will instantly and benevolently fix everything, which has -- as noted -- been violently disproved over and over in human history, and they think that "leftism" consists of having the most "pure" views. They do not care about or actively deplore any idea of making compromises to put them into practice, they gain moral superiority by excluding more and more people to make a smaller and smaller in-group, they refuse to accept any information, history, or factual evidence that contradicts their beliefs, and they're just as angrily anti-intellectual as the worst Christian-fascist-nutjob-right-winger, because reality has a bad habit of being complicated and not fitting into neat boxes. And if you think, as I do, that it would be a very, very bad idea to trust these mean, vindictive, constantly-want-to-punish-everyone-who-is-not-exactly-like-them people with absolute power, then you'll have to move to the idea of accepting that for all its flaws, democracy is still the best and most just system we have yet invented for governing ourselves, and the idea is to fix ours, not get rid of it entirely. So yeah.

The FTX trial has been genuinely hilarious because since 2021 Ive watched crime and subsequent consequences happen in real time its like the bernie madoff situation on crack, Sam was on podcasts admitting to doing ponzi schemes, he was talking to people about how he was only doing a lil bit of fraud, coffeezilla a dude who makes youtube videos exposing scammers got him angry because he asked Sam to explain how what he did was not the definition of fraud, theres like, twitter exchanges entered into evidence and the prosecutors had to keep the trail focused on fraud because at some point they were talking about FTX and Sam's crew bribing the Chinese government

okay so here is a quick little something inspired by this video.
Max calls late at night, Christian is a Good Surrogate Dad, and Toto just really likes his husband.
((this is a lil sad maybe be prepared))
---
“Toto.”
“Hm?”
“I’m going to get the guestroom ready.”
“Okay?” Toto furrows his brows and lifts his gaze from the illuminating blue of his laptop screen. “Are we getting visitors?”
“Visitor. Just one,” Christian says, and there is something solemn to his expression. “Max just called.”
“Max?” Toto’s eyebrows lift. Christian nods and holds his gaze and the seriousness with which he does it makes Toto close his laptop without saving the files he’d been working on. “Is everything okay? Is he not in Holland?”
“Yeah, he was. Is. He’s on his way to the UK right now.”
He says it like it isn’t twelve past nine on a Wednesday night. Everything about this is catching Toto’s attention. “On his way… from Holland? And he’s sleeping here?”
Christian nods. Toto gets up from behind his desk. He knows the look on Christian’s face. “What happened?”
Christian falters. He allows Toto’s hand to curl around his hip. “He wouldn’t say on the phone. Something to do with Jos. He really just…” Christian clears his throat and says, “He really just asked if he could come.”
Toto studies Christian for another quiet moment, lets the words hang in the space between them, reads them for what they are, for what Christian read them as well. And more than anything, he trusts Christian’s instincts. “Do we need to go and pick him up?” he asks. “From the airport?”
Christian’s expression softens. “I told him I’d pick him up from Milton Keynes. He can use the airfield there.”
“I’m happy to go get him,” Toto says gently, “if you want to get the house ready. Or if you think he will be more comfortable with you, I will get things ready here.” He presses a kiss to the corner of Christian’s mouth, right where it wants to curl up into a soft smile.
Christian leans in for another kiss, a brush of lips and a quiet “I love you” all in one.
“I’ll get him. Pick nice sheets.”
---
Toto chooses the nicest ones he can find, based on softness, thread count, and thickness. He makes up the bed to the best of his abilities, goes downstairs and gets two more pillows from the living room, the soft, fluffy ones Christian likes to run his hands through when he’s tense. He also gets a bottle of water, a glass, and a few protein bars on the way, then changes his mind, drops the protein bars and grabs some chocolate instead.
He remembers the times oh too well, whenever he would have to crash on a friend’s couch for a night or two because money was tight and his options were limited. He knows none of these things really apply to Max, but still, he remembers the embarrassment, the feeling of not quite belonging, of being out of place and feeling like a burden, and from what little information Christian has provided him, Toto wants to make sure Max doesn’t have to concern himself with those feelings, too, once he arrives.
He tries not to overthink it too much. Max won’t care about candles or anything like that, Toto doesn’t think, so he just leaves the room tinted in the soft orange light from the bedside lamp and with the heating on so Max won’t freeze.
---
It takes about an hour until he hears gravel crunch beneath the tyres of Christian’s Range Rover, and Toto calls the dogs, eager and excited, to his side and leaves the volume of the TV exactly as it is, so Max doesn’t feel uncomfortably exposed when he comes in.
It’s Christian’s voice first as the front door opens and Bernie and Flav are ready to zoom out into the hallway, eager to greet him, but Toto holds them back with a gentle click of his tongue.
“Just leave your things by the door for now, we can take them up later. Don’t worry about it,” Christian says. “Let’s get you warmed up first. Do you want a cup of tea?”
There’s a low murmur in reply as the door to the kitchen is pushed open and Toto turns his head. Max is trailing behind Christian, pale, and where he normally stands tall with his shoulders pulled back, tonight he looks small, hunched in on himself, hollow, wide eyes and weariness written in every line of his face.
“There you go, that’s Toto, my husband.” Christian’s face morphs into a soft grin, wrinkles deep around his eyes. “You might’ve seen him around once or twice.”
“Hello Max.”
Max’s eyes flicker to where Toto is lounging on the sofa and for a moment, he meets a gaze completely unguarded. A young boy, tired and scared and sad. Toto’s heart shatters.
He gets up, slowly, so as not to startle either Max or the dogs, and shuffles over into the kitchen. Flav and Bernie trail behind him, first curious, then excited when they recognise the new visitor as someone familiar.
In passing, Toto places a hand on Max’s shoulder, a light touch, there, then gone, and hopes it is understood as reassuring. “Are you okay with the dogs? Or I can take them upstairs.”
“Uh… No,” Max’s voice cracks. “No, I mean, yeah, no, it’s fine. Thanks.”
Toto smiles at him, then steps up next to Christian, wraps an arm around his middle and drops a kiss to the top of his head. “There is some dinner left in the fridge,” he says, presses another soft kiss to the side of his husband’s face and adds, “I will leave you guys to it.”
Christian breathes around a smile, squeezes his hand in a quick gesture of appreciation. When Toto rounds Max once more, he smiles at him and says, “It’s good to have you here.”
---
Before Toto turns in for the night, he goes back downstairs. Technically he doesn’t need to check on things, Christian will come and join him in bed when he’s ready, but it’s been almost two hours and Toto wants to make sure things are okay.
The ground floor lies in darkness, only a sliver of light is coming from the kitchen and with it the hiccupping sounds of heaving sobs and choked up breaths. For a moment, Toto freezes right where he stands, an arm’s length away from the door.
He chances a glance through the crack where the door has been left ajar and his heart smarts at what he finds. Christian and Max at the kitchen table, Max with his head bowed and his arms wrapped around himself, trembling minutely under the weight of his own sobs, and Christian’s hand curled around his forearm, trying to console him.
Toto doesn’t stay to watch. He understands this is a private moment, Max sought Christian out because he trusts him, and Toto doesn’t want to break that trust by barging in on a moment as honest as this. But before he turns his back on the scene he chances a last look, not at Max, but at his husband, with an unusual softness to him, a tender gentleness in the way he holds Max in the only way he can, with a hand wrapped around the boy’s arm and his thumb stroking the exposed skin. Toto can’t help but think he chose well.
I will send out an army to find you In the middle of the darkest night It's true, I will rescue you.

Francis Kinloch in the Müller-Bonstetten letters: Part 3
My translations here, German and French originals below the cut. Thanks to @acrossthewavesoftime for help on a particularly sticky passage!
28 Aug 1776
What can I do about it that my pen always flatters you? Now that Kinloch is also leaving me, you are everything to me. I understand your heart, I understand you in your absentmindedness.
Difficile est saturam non scribere. nam quis iniquae
tam patiens urbis, tam ferreus, ut teneat se.*
My letters will henceforth be different. My Kinloch departs from me, and B. is the only mortal whom I can embrace, at least once a week. [...] And he is Kinloch, whose hometown is, at this moment, being challenged by Clinton, who in this hour may have lost his entire fortune to the bombs or the sword, who knows that his gentle mother and his sister are exposed to the barbaric rage of the German troops, and who continues to calmly study the law, to prepare himself for great things, and even finds the time to love me, and to greet you.
*From Juvenal’s Satires:
It is hard not to write Satire. For who is so tolerant of the unjust City, so steeled, that he can restrain himself
18 Sept 1776
I wrote a long letter to you and did not send it, because I know that you always share my displeasures with me. I would rather harden myself against them; excepting vice and ignorance, there is no misfortune in the world for the wise; otherwise, what would be the purpose of philosophy! It has been a long time since you wrote to me; remember that I cannot be without you. Kinloch is leaving, when? I do not know, but certainly before the 10th October,* for three days to Iverdun; I am not going with him.
When K wants to leave me what little the war has spared him, and wants to renounce everything for me, and is angry that fate has not made him rich for my sake, then your friend feels the power of divine friendship over his heart, looks for it in vain among the others, sees only you and him.
*John Laurens writes to Kinloch on 30 September and mentions that Kinloch expected to leave for Italy earlier than planned, on account of the health of his travelling companion – and possibly a young lady he was courting – called Miss Stephens.
30 Oct 1776
Kinloch makes me happier than all 13 Cantons*. I have 3 letters from him, I will bring them for you.
*The 13 Cantons made up the Swiss Confederation until 1798, and were the subject of Müller’s extensive historical studies.
23 Dec 1776
At about seven o’clock I write my letters; weekly to you and to Kinloch; rarely to others on business; occasionally to Geneva because of the unrest; occasionally to a young person who loves me very much and whom I am training to serve in place of my eyes. [...] My happiest moments are those in which I find a new connection or a new direction, and those where I rise from my work, and walk around my room alone, my thoughts fixed on you and K. or on my future happiness.
31 Dec 1776
Kinloch writes, all his letters are full of imagination and sentiment; he has seen Cardinal Bernis, the Duke of Ostergotland, the Duke of Gloucester. The American army is scattered, Washington appears to be looking for a good peace for himself and his people; if the war should continue, K has determined to sacrifice all the happiness that awaited him, even the health that he only enjoys in Europe, to his mother. I can never praise the nobility of his elevated soul enough to you.
17 Feb 1777
Do you not think that I would do well to tell Kinloch not to look for anything for me, until I write otherwise to him again? [...] That which makes me unable to expect I shall ever be independent from the pen is my unlimited yearning for fame; all that I write, I want to make worthy of all times and all peoples: that makes the work long. But I am not anxious; I trust in you and Kinloch and myself. I want to send you letters about Italy from Kinloch along with my chapter!
1 April 1777
I embrace you, my brother and my friend. As soon as I am freed from the shackles of this death, I will live for you alone and for K. Farewell, farewell.
12 April 1777
And another thing: Yes, the Greeks had kings; these kings were planters, like Abraham, like our old nobility and the american Englishmen. If Kinloch’s 2000 acres in Florida and his Kensington, Kinlochfurt and Winyau* were laid together, Homer would have called him King Francis Kinloch.
[...]
Kinloch from Paris: “In this moment I receive yours and stretch the hand of fraternal love to you across the extent of country, that separates us my dearest M. The love of you is an essential part of my very being, and I could not sooner quit the one as the other. If there is a Being, whose eye pierces into the inmost recesses of our soul, he alone can know how much I love you, and how much, how ardently I desire from the very bottom of my heart, that it may ever be in my power to remove every obstacle that stands between you and the most supreme degree of happiness. The only service we can render one another at present, is to keep our friendship unsullied by any thing unworthy of it, to act as if we, each of us, had the eyes of him we love best upon us. The day will come when I shall be able to lay my hands upon your works, and to say with a smile of exultation: This man is my bosom friend. Trust me, K. will not be altogether idle on his side. I seldom, you know, give way to the effusions of my love, but when I do, the tears start into my eyes, and I am obliged to lay down my pen.” And you: “Everything brings you closer and closer to my heart.” Can I be unhappy, and will the warmth of your friendship not enrich my spirit? not ignite it? When I received Kinloch's letter I could not work all morning. Tell me, my dear friend: do you not love him too?
*Jucharte is a Swiss term for an area of land of 36 ares, though here being used synonymously with acres. These names presumably refer to Kinloch family owned land at Kensington and Weehaw, though it’s not clear what or where Kinlochsfurt (Kinloch’s Ford) is, as well as the 2000 acres that Kinloch Sr acquired in East Florida.
28 Aug 1776
[...]
Kinloch aus Paris: “In this moment I receive yours and stretch the hand of fraternal love to you across the extent of country, that separates us my dearest M. I seldom, you know, give way to the effusions of my love, but when I do, the tears start into my eyes, and I am obliged to lay down my pen.”

I have always felt the Left’s vitriol towards Kissinger was overblown, but that he was perhaps less masterful as many of his defenders claim. He accomplished some important diplomatic wins, and was also part of a terrible escalation in war. Is Kissinger really the specter many claim, or the master the others do or is he just a master at self-promotion who happened to live a long time?
Kissinger had some fairly prominent wins and the criticism that he receives is usually on conduct that is itself quite worthy of criticism.
Kissinger's biggest foreign policy successes were his shuttle diplomacy in the Middle East with regards to Israel, Egypt, and Syria and his pursuit of detente with the Soviet Union, cooling tensions between the US and USSR. However, it's not like Henry Kissinger was the lone voice in promoting detente - that was a wing of foreign policy thought that often found itself in the minority in the era of the containment doctrine. Detente was as much a creation of the trends of forces of history as much as it was the brainchild of any one department of state official. To attribute detente to Kissinger is bad Great Man history.
Much of the criticism of Henry Kissinger - support for Argentina during the Dirty War, the bombing of Cambodia, and support for Pakistan despite the genocide are very accurate. The damage and devastation wrought by these policies, and American support for them, lingers today. Moreover, not all of these policies were only seen to be devastating in hindsight or post-facto, these were entered into with knowledge of what was going on, especially in Pakistan or Operation Condor in the Southern Cone. If someone castigates Kissinger for the devastation his policies caused, there is a great deal of truth to it.
I often roll my eyes at left-wing critics of Henry Kissinger, not because their criticism is invalid, but because I find it remarkably hypocritical, even ignoring cranks and bigots like Noam Chomsky. The Democratic Socialists of America, for example, has been running headlines on the death of Kissinger, but they support Putin's war in Ukraine, support Uyghur camps, and are currently in support of Maduro's latest colonial escalation over Essequibo. Bernie Sanders is correct in criticizing Kissinger's actions in supporting authoritarian regimes in Latin America, including the use of death squads, but Sanders himself supported death squads in Nicaragua (even fundraising for Ortega knowing that he was doing it) and compared opposition efforts to expose Ortega's shootings and bombings of indigenous populations to Nazism (yes, really). So I largely find those critics to be pearl-clutching; they're quite happy to commit the same (or worse) and cheerlead for the same, provided that *they're* the ones doing it.
Thanks for the question, Cle-Guy.

what troubles me most... (to my leftist friends and family)
How can seemingly intelligent people see everything going on all around the nation and the world, and not see anything wrong happening? Before Trump got in the picture, we all saw things happening, but we were never allowed to question it and the politicians just did what they wanted to do. Some of us got mad, but we dealt with it. And we all got along with each other for the most part. There was some hate, but not much.
How can you not see that all media outlets praise one political party and condemn the other? The media is so biased you would have to be a doorknob not to see it. And the division is so fierce that normally intelligent people fight to the death almost to defend their party of their choice. Horrible, violent, nasty things being said and done, but it's allowed by only one side and not the other, and nobody sees this going on?
Then Trump entered the picture. He took down all his opponents by exposing their crimes and inadequacies, in his way unfortunately, and took the nomination by storm. Hillary was so sure she was gonna be president that the DNC put up the congratulations banners months before the democrats even voted. Bernie Sanders said so, and they all denied it. Then once Hillary won the nomination, she admitted it and fired the head of the DNC. Then a minute later hired the same woman for a position on her presidential cabinet for 10 times the salary.
Then, seeing a surprising loss to Trump, Clinton got a dossier from a foreign spy that claimed that Trump colluded with a foreign nation to steal the election. But even if it was true, wasn't she doing the same exact thing? And nobody caught that? And now, after all these years and all the wasted time and money, the accusation against Trump is proven false, and was instigated by Clinton with Obama and Biden in full knowledge of it, and the nation looks like total fools by it.
And EVERYBODY attacked. They were fierce too, and from both sides. Who could Trump trust? Roger Stone was so dangerous to this nation that the FBI SWAT team were organized to arrest him at 4:00 AM while he slept peacefully next to his wife, with his children sleeping peacefully in other rooms. And this much necessary organized attack was so important and top secret that nobody else knew it was going to happen. Except CNN who filmed it live as it happened. And still so many people do not see this?
And they attacked Trump with everything they had, on both sides. And never in the entire time since he became president has anything positive ever been reported on any main stream media outlet. Even FOX denies the positive things they said now.
Only one man is bad. Can't you see this?
Only one political party is bad. Can't you see this?
Think about how Hitler may have taken over Germany and the others. Do you see a connection without mentioning that one man?
This is the second time ever recorded in the world's history that this has ever happened. Jesus was the first. Can't you see this?

So! A while ago I made redesigns for some of my least favorite Three Houses outfits. With a lot of the female characters, it feels like the priority with their design is "show boobs and/or bare legs". Obviously, I don't claim to be better at character design than the original artists, but here's my take with the following priorities (in order):
Representing the character and making them easily identifiable. Basically, the design should serve as a "condensed" version of their personality, abilities, culture, etc.
An outfit that I find (with my 100% correct and objective opinion, of course) to be attractive
Being reasonably practical, at least enough that it doesn't break immersion. Considers the character's job, available resources, etc.
Ordinarily I'd design an outfit to go with the character's body type, but I was lazy here lol. If people are interested, I could draw nice versions on the actual characters sometime. Oh, BTW, the concept for this post was heavily inspired by looking through the @bikiniarmorbattledamage tumblr :))))
Below are detailed descriptions on how I went about designing them, if anyone's curious! I will be bashing the original designs quite a bit because I find it funny, but I hold absolutely no disrespect toward anyone who prefers them to my poorly-thought-out versions :)
Bernadetta – I feel like the designers were trying to combine the female archer class outfit, Bernie’s own girly/plushie aesthetic, and the “fancy noble lady” style and it didn’t quiiiiiite work out. I really like the color scheme & overall shapes, so I just went about changing the few things that ruined it for me.
First off, the huge bell sleeves. They’re just silly and don’t match the outfit imo. I turned them into an elaboration on her cute gloves.
Gave her pants instead of booty shorts. I don’t think Bernie would wear a long skirt that would keep her from running around, but the exposed legs give her a “vulnerable” look that I don’t think she’d appreciate. Plus, having the leg-pouch strapped to her bare skin looked really uncomfy ☹.
The boots didn’t work as well with her shiny new Pants, so I gave her knitted leg-warmer things inspired by this gorgeous cipher art.
I expanded her leg-pouch-thing and gave her a teeny little dagger. I just think she’d carry weapons on her person.
Constance – Honestly, credit to her for doing the best she could with the god-awful Dark Flier class design. I still think her outfit is pretty ugly and sexist, so I made some adjustments. I tried to evoke a “noble lady” feeling, but keep the muted color scheme and lack of patterns to imply that she’s actually dirt-poor. I took inspiration from people like Ferdie (noble vibe; armor purely for show not practicality) but with her personal “edgy steampunk vampire” aesthetic.
I changed her stupid boob-cup breastplate. I don’t even care about the dangers of wearing boobplate in realistic combat—it just looks ugly. Like why do you need to go to extra trouble to say “I have BOOBS! TWO of them!!”? It’s embarrassing. I mean it’s fine if you’re proud of your boobs, but then don’t cover them up with metal maybe???
I realized that the designers probably gave her boobplate because, without it, her outfit isn’t actually all that feminine. Coco is a pretty feminine lady, so I remedied this by giving her puffy sleeves (inspired by the Awakening Dark Flier design) and a skirt-thing (with an awkward slit that would allow her to sit on a horse). The skirt had the added bonus of being incompatible with the stupid butt-grabbing hip armor. Good riddance!
Traded in her bare legs for some silly suspender-sock-things. I just thought they worked better with the skirt and more “girly” outfit overall. Also gave her shin-guards to extend the pink color scheme throughout the whole outfit.
I also changed her dress into a stylish vest that, imo, looks nicer (and comfier) with the armor. I gave her some gold accents on the vest & armguards for a dash of color.
Her belt got a revamp to work better with the vest.
Lysithea – On to our favorite doily princess! Her design doesn’t reek as much of “boobs and/or legs priority”, but it’s still silly and looks pretty uncomfortable. I actually really like the aesthetic, so I tried to keep it as much as possible. I did end up having to introduce another color (silver), though.
I think her doily skirt looks extra silly because it’s so dwarfed by her sleeves. I lengthened it, made it puffier, and added another layer beneath it.
More drastically, I ended up changing the whole top of the dress so it was a shirt & skirt instead. I’m not sure I have a justification for this beyond “I don’t usually prefer dresses”, but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out 😊 Also, what’s with the weird rows of ribbons(???) at her sides? Into the trash lol.
The ribbon attachment looks like it would be really cold on her bare chest ☹. I moved it down to the level of her shirt and attached it to her shoulders instead of her neck (for comfort).
Her shoes got boringer but less dumb-looking. What can I say, I’m not good at designing shoes.
Hapi – Hers is the least-bad of the Ashen Wolves’ timeskip designs, not that that’s saying much. I don’t really like gray and green as a color scheme, so I gave her a bit of brown and some more gold accents. Other than that, I feel like she has a sort of forest girl/witch/traveler look, which I tried to keep as much as possible.
Obviously, the silly boob-separator strap had to go. I have no problems with Hapi being sexy, but she’s much more the “forgot to put on my pants when I rolled out of bed at 1:00pm” type rather than the “put extra effort into showing that I have TWO BOOBS” type. Therefore, I kept a similar amount of skin showing but tried to make it easier to assemble.
Her new skirt was based on the Valkrie designs from other games (you’ll notice the similarity to the Mist-inspired outfit in this post). I think this version is both cuter and looks easier to move in. Also, I love giving everyone too many belts! Hers has a lil pouch for carrying random junk she finds.
Both her arms and legs looked a little boring imo, so I gave her some pretty bracelets and altered her shoes. Plus, her original boots looked hard to move in. Here, the actual boot is pretty loose but is tied below the knee with an extra laceable piece and above the knee with a brown strap.
Petra – Ho boy. I always felt like Petra’s design could be potentially problematic, although I’ve never done any research. Anywayyyy, it’s clear that the designers wanted something “exotic”-looking, but they had no ideas beyond “well she’s from a warm climate right” (In reality, someone from a warm climate would probably be unadjusted to the cold and bundle up… but that goes against the goal of “condensed character description” so I don’t really mind). Instead, I took a lot of inspiration from this awesome Cipher art! Her color scheme is a hot mess but not without potential, and personally I think I did okay with it!
Ok, ok, her design also does a decent job of indicating that she’s royalty from a hunting-focused nation. When re-doing her top I tried to keep that in mind, so I gave her some fancy jewelry and animal goods (i.e. fluff). I don’t feel like re-iterating the boobplate argument, so suffice to say that her breastplate suffered the same fate as Constance’s.
I adjusted her arm jewelry to be more to my liking. Not really any logic there.
Her miniskirt is pretty dumb, so I changed the shape and incorporated some hip armor (someone tell me the official name). I also took away the fluffy fringe, seeing as she already got some fluff around her neck. Instead, I added the pattern that was originally on her leg-band.
Do I need to explain giving her another pant leg? I know her outfit is based on the female thief class, but it doesn’t look good there either. And once again, I had no ideas for her shoes beyond not liking the old ones ☹.

What are your fav Sydcarmy mysteries/reveals!?!
Mine are:
1. Does Mr Adamu have any relation to the beef. And the general consensus that she lied.
2. Does Carmy still have Sydney’s notebook.
3. What happened that Carmy had to apologize to Pete.
4. Why Nat hates Faks’ sister.
Honorable mentions:
1. Who will be the one to sus out their developing relationship / who will expose them.
2. And some what unrelated does Nat pick up on any of the sydcarmy vibes cause she seems to be the most out of the loop
hmmmm, i've never thought of them before...
1. Does Mr Adamu have any relation to the beef. And the general consensus that she lied.
i want syd to not have lied; but if she did, then i want carm to tease her mercilessly about it and for her to be *mortified*, but secretly for carm to feel really, deeply soft about it, that he did something that meant so much to her that she came to him, and his meaningfulness to her was too much to present him with when they'd only just met, so she lied. you know how s01 people kept mistaking him for having died instead of mikey? something about the thought that he mattered to syd before he even knew her (*he* did, not the beef) and that he acknowledges and accepts that (cause he matters to a lot of people, tbh, he's very loved, is surrounded by it, but it isn't really something he uh accepts/can handle).
2. Does Carmy still have Sydney’s notebook.
absolutely. i am deeply invested in carmen being a freak around and about syd. he either keeps it as a talisman on his person or on his desk/in the glovebox of his car; or he's stashed it somewhere in his apartment and stumbles across it every now and then and just stops and flips through it, remembering (again) syd's brilliance and commitment and just that he likes her so freaking much.
3. What happened that Carmy had to apologize to Pete.
he hit/punched him
4. Why Nat hates Faks’ sister.
she flirted with pete
Honorable mentions:
1. Who will be the one to sus out their developing relationship / who will expose them.
tina will know but will mind her own business because she's mostly a well adjusted adult. marcus will not know about it. he thinks syd is way too cute, kind, and funny for carm, and he doesn't think carm "does" romance/relationships/sex--like it would never occur to him they'd be a thing. also i just love whenever he's surprised by something ("wait you were in the major leagues?!" "wait he died?!"). richie will suspect and be loud about it because he's deeply invested in carm's life in all the codependent ways people proselytize is ~sooooooooo~ "unhealthy" unless it's their favorite man doing it. richie lives firmly outside of my experience of men and my imagination, so i am...let's say interested in how storer & co will navigate his investment/interest in carm's life and decisions and his whole thing about syd being a child/baby *and* his like Thing about chivalry/ treating women a certain way (how he was so upset carm made claire upset, how he called syd "sweetheart" when they first met--and i am legally bound to say the flipside of this gendered dynamic is he lied to his wife and got other people to lie to her, and he asked syd whose dick she sucked to get a good review).
2. And some what unrelated does Nat pick up on any of the sydcarmy vibes cause she seems to be the most out of the loop
listen, my girl has her life together in ways everyone else at the beef/bear (including syd) can only dream about. she's married to a tall hot man who is genuinely kind, adores her, and puts up with her fucked up family; she's pregnant and keeping it from her abusive mother because she's not gonna have her kid be subjected to the bullshit she was; she can do math; everyone at the bear listens to her; she's got cicero wrapped around her finger (as much as he can be); she "looks like february" but has her hair highlighted and lightly curled (*i am bernie sanders photoshopped with a gun, pointing it at chris storer and threatening him to get a black hairstylist on set for ayo*)--she is too busy being correct, stable, and the target of her mother's anger to deal with syd and carmen being deeply in love with each other and deeply avoidant about it. 10 bucks they get together and she rolls her eyes and says "finally!"
..............but i think my fav pending reveal is syd's best meal being one that carm made. like *everything* is built on that!

In Still, Daryl tells Beth about the fight he and Merle had with the Tweaker and he says "I thought I was dead, over a dumb cartoon about a talking dog."
When I Googled talking dog cartoon, the first one that came up was Watch My Chops. (I did it a second time, and then Scooby Doo came up first).
"Watch My Chops (also known as Corneil & Bernie) is a French animated series about an intelligent talking dog, Corneil, and his 'dog sitter', Bernie Barges. It starred Keith Wickham, Ben Small, Dian Perry, Dan Russell, Becca Stewart, Laurence Bouvard and more recently Mark Laidman. The series originally aired from 2003 to 2004 for 52 episodes[1] and was revived from 2014 to 2016 for an additional 52 episodes, bringing the total to 104"
"In the 2014 retool of the series, Corneil and Bernie start to get into more bizarre adventures such as hunting for a legendary monster, battling a computer virus, or trying to face the apocalypse. Most of the supporting characters are reduced to background roles and a few minor ones get more focus. This adaptation also features more humans who find out about Corneil’s secret, and he begins to worry less about being exposed"

Flufftober 2022
I promised myself no angst for a couple of days, like not at all, so let's try this lol
These are just prompts, i can't promise i'm going to write a single story past this point, considering that it was supposed to be for october and not november but who knows.🤷🏻‍♀️
1. Wearing Each Other’s Clothes: It's starts with a shirt with a dumb print on and it doesn't really ends anywhere. (Goose/Slider, sharing clothes during the years);
2. "You’ve told your parents?": To my granma 'lie, but yeah. I told her. (Halo/Phoenix, Nat's granma and her sweet tea are the reason Callie doesn't want to come back);
3. Thick as Thieves: Penny knows them all and Sarah loves to gossip. (Penny Benjiamin & Sarah Kazansky, forties are the new twenty and all the shit none of them believes in);
4. Supporting Silly Quirks/Hobbies: Mickey likes to collect the smallest action figures of his favourite characters. 'Ben likes spending the day walking around. It's a win win. (Fanboy/Payback, 'Ben has to remember Mickey to put sunscreen on at least four times during the day, it always gets a kiss after);
5. "Oh no, you’re a Morning Person!": Neil is a morning person, Bob is really not. (Bob&Omaha, how to work around a new queer platonic relationship and make your partner stay in bed after six);
6. Candles, Lanterns, Fairy Lights: Amelia loves fairy lights, and Charlie knows the perfect place and what to buy her for her birthday (Charlie & Amelia; charliepenny implied);
7. Movie Marathon: Ice likes sci-fi, Slider never saw one. The cinema, three streets from the Academy, offers the perfect opportunity to remedy that. Mother Goose offers caramel popcorn and witty comments. (Iceman & Slider & Goose, academy era)
8. Shooting Stars: Carole takes Bradley to see the stars when neither of them can sleep (Carole & Bradley)
9. Game Day (Sports): they can't decide which one is the best time, in normal times, but when the Navy is playing? all hands on deck and fuck the Army ('86 class and their barbecue)
10. Love Language: Learning ASL is probably more complicated than all the math he does when he's flying. But the way his husband smiles at him when he sings back good morning makes all the work feel like a walk in the park (Icema/Maverick; post-cancer arc);
11. Poetry, Art, Music, Craft: Fritz likes to paint, and a small gallery decided to expose some of them, the daggers put their best clothes to go and see it. (Fritz & the daggers; they are the bestest of friends; found family);
12. "You kept this?": Mav puts his scarf around Ice's neck during a deployment in the middle of ocean because Tom forgot his. Twenty years later, Mav finds the scarf again, in on of his husband's drawers. (Iceman/Maverick).
13. Secret Family Recipe: Ice teaches him how to make his famous pie which becomes Bradley's comfort food. (Iceman & Rooster; father-son relationship);
14. Truth or Dare/20 Questions:
15. Accidents don't just happen accidentally: Warlock is always sitting in the seat to Bernie's right. Doesn't matter how full or empty the class is (Warlock/Hondo; au- university);
16. "I hate you" – "I love you too": Cyclone would like to not be part of it, but apparently he had to assist to the strangest love declaration of the world (Hangman/Rooster; poor Cy);
17. Animal Shelter: the story of how Hollywood and Wolfman ended up adopting a turtle. (Hollywood/Wolfman, retold by Sunny because it's funnier this way);
18. Soulmate AU: They don't need to look down to know they found each other (Iceman/Maverick; enemies to lovers);
19. Hot Chocolate: Carole likes to treat herself with a cup of hot chocolate sometimes. She likes even more to share it with Goose and Slider. (Carole/Goose/Slider; domesticity; good days to celebrate);
20. Bedtime Stories: Chipper as the wildest bedtime stories for Bradley and Goose doesn't know where he takes them (Chipper & baby Bradley; Goose);
21. Kiss for Good Luck: 2011 and Mav is going to fly away in less than thirty seconds. Tom takes the first step and says "i'm going to kiss you for good luck", Mav laughs and kisses him a second time. (Iceman/Maverick; first public kiss after the DADT was repealed);
22. "Have you heard?":
23. POV Outsider: Charlie is sorely confused by the scene in front of her. (Slider/Goose/Carole; they're dancing together, ain't that complicated lol);
24. All the Hugs: Javy is the one who gives the best hugs, but sometimes Javy needs to be hugged too. (Coyote & The Daggers; they're going to hug all javy's problems away);
25. First Dance: The song is cheesy and Nat's cheeks hurt for how much she's smiling (Phoenix/Halo; just married).
26. Blankets: Logan takes a particular blanket with him everywhere he goes and doesn't share it with anyone. Than Brigham, his posh name and his even posher callsign, comes around and Yale just pass it like it's nothing. (Yale/Harvard; cuddling);
27. Reunion: They meet in the middle of sky, Mav on his plane, Ice, Carole and Goose on a cloud. It feels like getting home (canon top gun: maverick; while going down mav sees them all and spends time with them; mav&goose&carole; mav&ice);
28. Picnic: Sunny invites Chip out for a picnic, and they end up sharing their lunch with a dog (Sunny/Chip; a cute doggo);
29. Leaves: Javy's mom has an impressive collection of leaves crown with Jack and Javy's name on. (Hangman & Coyote; childhood friendship; Javy's mom)
30. Dear Diary: , today I saw the most beautiful man on the face of the Earth with the worst moustache someone could have ever thought about. (Carole/Goose; first meeting)
31. A Sweet Treat: Halloween is his favourite holiday for two reasons: his uncles' crazy costumes and candies! (baby goose+ flyboy uncles)

Kiryu from Yakuza is also like that, they literally had him fake his death to protect the people around him and introduced a new protagonist for the next game, which he only had a brief appearance in that seemingly acted as him passing on the torch to said protagonist. But now in the upcoming sequel, he's back as a co-protagonist and also has cancer, and he gets exposed as not actually being dead. Please just let this man rest why are you doing this to him when he's already suffered so much
every long running franchise is just playing weekend at bernies with characters corpses
