my headcanon is that deacon’s name really is deacon. desdemona asked what he wanted his codename to be and he gave his real name, knowing no one would think twice, probably just to see if he could do it. having no one left, he may have felt that codenames didn’t matter without anyone to protect. either way, there have surely been stranger codenames. it’s the only truth he ever tells

Headcanons!:

If there were one word he'd use to describe himself, it would be hardy. He's used to pushing himself to do whatever it takes to survive, even when doing things that others consider crazy. MacCready is sarcastic, stubborn, and guarded—he doesn't trust easily.

He affectionately refers to his rifle as 'Baby' (but only in private).

He is surprisingly insightful and observant, noticing details that others overlook.

MacCready's past has left scars on him emotionally and physically, and some days are worse than others.

When MacCready is ill, it the more clingy and needy he becomes.

Hates being cold, so bundling him in warm blankets helps make him feel better. Will accept hot soup (but NOT cave fungus)

Self-consciously hates how his knees knock together and his ribs poke under his shirt. (due to having rickets as a kid)

When genuinely happy, he's all toothy smiles until he thinks someone might notice, and then he reverts back to his usual stoic self. (doesn't like his teeth)

MacCready is always smoking, his cigarettes resting between his lips as he goes through one pack after another.

His guilty pleasures are Sugar Bombs and Nuka Cola. He loves sweet things but doesn't have time for much food.

His mind is full of cuss words.

He also has a habit of tapping his fingers against the side of his rifle whenever he's nervous.

MacCready and intimacy:

He misses physical intimacy and closeness and longs for that connection again but struggles to communicate it. Insecurity eats at MacCready; he feels guilty about moving on with his life and letting go of Lucy.

When MacCready does allow himself to get close to someone, the things that draw him to you aren't lost on him. How your presence brings him a sense of peace and makes him forget about all the problems in his life, if only for a while, how you make him smile when he wants nothing more than to cry, and how you somehow always manage to look at him with such kindness, even when he feels he doesn't deserve it.

MacCready finds sleep with a new partner extremely difficult. After losing Lucy the way he did, having trouble falling asleep is now a side effect of his traumatic experiences. He often wakes up in the middle of the night, unable to fall back asleep, and if his companion stirs, he's instantly wide awake, unable to keep his eyes off them.

He tells himself it's because he's trying to protect them, but he knows deep down that part of him can't stop wondering what it would be like to lose another loved one in a heartbeat. To find himself alone yet again... and being alone scares the heck out of him.

MacCready can be very vulnerable at night, especially after a nightmare. When he comes back to his senses, it takes a moment for the memories to fade away. Once they do, he gets flustered and tries to push his nightmares out of his head. He doesn't want his partner to see him as weak and break down.

As MacCready starts trusting you, he eventually reveals his troubles. He's more willing to seek support rather than deal with everything alone. He may still shy away from physical contact or withdraw after the initial breakdown. Once MacCready starts opening up, he slowly becomes more comfortable, allowing you to show affection and comfort him.

An ongoing conflict with himself is his attraction to men, which he has repressed for many years, believing that acknowledging it would question his marriage to Lucy. In MacCready's eyes, you either like women or men and not both. So, the fact that he harbors these feelings of attraction to men makes him feel guilty, ashamed, and, most of all, confused about his identity.

Fallout Headcanon #1.

After Butch finally left the vault he definitely matured more. He spent most of his life in there without having to worry about anything other than his abusive mother. He didn't really have to grow up until he was truly in danger by leaving the vault. He never would've done that if he hadn't admired the lone wanderer for being so brave. He only bullied the LW because he saw something in them that he wish he had had, and by leaving the vault and finding them again, it helped him grow as a character. He eventually apologized after getting over his tough guy act and started making changes for the better. He grew close to them and truly felt guilt for the way he acted as they were growing up. He still acts like a little shit sometimes, but its just in his nature and the LW doesn't mind it. It helps them feel like a piece of home was following them around.

I feel so honored to get this ask becuase im just all in my feels and hyperfixation right now and not by any means an actual fallout blog so here's these few headcanons that I threw together from my personal fics. If anything is confusing, let me know and I'll explain it better 😅

• In his line "Hey. Rads over here. Not for the softskinned", he says softskinned instead of anything like "smoothskin" becuase its, well, a slur in the context some ghouls say it, and also because he is consittered a new age ghoul and doesn't see the need to use such a word to describe someone if it has such negativity attached to it. Especially since it's only been a decade or so since he's been a ghoul.

• Because of his friendship with MacCready and hearing Mac's second hand stories from his Vault 101 friend back in the capital wasteland, he knows all too well of Vault-Tecs experiments in the different vaults. So when he meets the Sole Survivor and finds out what happened to them, he has even more of a reason to hate the company, a personal reason even.

• He LOVES pda in front of people like Pre-BB Danse, X6-88, etc, just to watch them squirm.

• You can pry this from my cold, dead hands, but you can still see a glimer of his concept art blue eyes under the blacked out part from a specific angle in specific lighting. He doesn't notice it until someone who he trusts enough to get that close tells him. He gets a bit warm and fuzzy but doesn't know why.

• (I read that Fahrenheit isn't his daughter in Canon, just in coding terms, so imma run with it) Even though Fahrenheit isn't his daughter he treats her as such. They met when she was young and he took care of her, basically saving her life. So out of loyalty and to repay a debt he constantly tells her doesn't exist, she took up the job of body guard. That and he taught her to play chess as a kid to get her mind off of bad things and that's why when she first meets Sole, she constantly makes chess references.

• He hates the irony that his new identity first name is also John. As much as he wants to forget his old life and name, it's still a bigger annoyance in his mind than he'd like.

• Becuase of being a ghoul, he's a lot warmer than youd think. So much so, sometimes sleeping in a settlement that has cats, he would wake up with one or more on his chest asleep with him.

• He used to hang out in the dinner above Diamond City, the one you have to parkour up to in-game, and do chems in secret away from everyone.

• (This may be something from my personal game becuase as soon as I sent him to a settlement, he started farming without me telling him to do so) He would work at the farm in Diamond city to get money for his chems.

• Loves loves loves leading people on when they think he's an older ghoul and ask what life was like prior to the bombs. "I'm telling you man, deathclaws used to be tiny. Teenage boys would keep them as pets. Feed 'em those little fish from the can. Their bites? Wouldn't even pierce the skin!"

• Even though he "gets around", he is so very touch starved. Like a close friend or significant other hugging him, touching his hands, straightening his clothes, even stealing his hat, he just melts on the inside.

• He knows Nick from his time in Diamond City. Loved to annoy the old synth as a kid and consitters Nick one of his only friends growing up.

Child ghouls are still one of the more horrifying and tragic things that fallout brought out. It’s like being a child vampire but 100x worse! You are forever stuck in a body that is considered young and immature despite aging as any normal person would mentally, your body decaying on you at such a young age would be so traumatizing,no child would be able to comprehend the horrifying changes that they would go through. I bet that most child ghouls go feral due to the mental trauma that their young minds can’t handle

in terms of weird worldbuilding headcanons that pop into my head this is probably the shortest so i will post it. its not common for anyone outside of the great khans to call papa khan anything aside from papa khan. among the khans its pretty common to just call him papa especially with the younger generation. not sure exact;y how common it is to do to his face but its not going to get your ass kicked or anything even if you arent a khan yourself. this thing has the unintended side effect of confusing the hell out of the ncr on how many kids hes actually got. which papa khan thinks is really funny.

so i've been replaying new vegas lately, mostly because i miss my legion!courier, and it got me thinking... what if Deacon from FO4 is actually a former frumentarius? i mean... it kinda fits. i just need to think why he'd defect from the legion, how he got to the east coast, met bet barbara, and then joined the railroad... personally if deacon is/was a frumentarious, i can see him joining the railroad as a way to atone for his time in the legion. so many ideas i have in my head. it could also be a fun AU to explore. Fallout Headcanon #2.

Butch and Charon are like brothers. After Butch made it into the Capital Wasteland, there were many things, and creatures, he had to get used to. Many of which tried to kill and or maim him. It took him a while to get into the groove of things, and although he still wasn’t quite used to it all (and probably wouldn’t ever be), he at least had the LW, and their other companions. Meeting Charon was weird for him. Charon is quiet, reserved, and doesn't seem to have a mind of his own. Plus he was a ghoul, a highly irradiated human that looked kinda like zombies. He didn’t quite like the look of them, but if the LW trusted them, he’d find a way to do the same. Plus they were people too, at least the sane ones were, and so was Charon.

It took him a while but Butch eventually wanted to get to know Charon. If he was going to be traveling with them, then he at least wanted to know the basics. And quite possibly break him out of his shell. All he knew so far was that Charon was bound by a contract, and he was raised to always honor that contract. Butch didn’t like that, it sounded like abuse. Something his mother had put him through for so many years. He couldn’t let someone near him live with that even if it was none of his business. But Charon didn’t have the mentality to stop him either. It took years for Butch to get him to fully open up, but once he did, by then Butch had grown attached to the tall ghoul. In fact, he had started to see him as a little brother (even though Charon was probably MUCH older than him) and even helped him find his personality.

Charon now had people he could depend on and not be bound to anymore (without his consent anyways), and he was extremely grateful to everyone he’d met. To this day they still travel together, all of them, as a family.
